IB & IGCSE in Al Salamah

Nobody in this market will tell you what tutoring costs, so here it is

Al Salamah is the broad residential district that holds much of Umm Al Quwain's modern housing, inland from the old harbour town. Households here are doing the same arithmetic as everyone else in the emirate: school outside the emirate, a long daily run, and a tutoring decision taken under a budget that already has school fees in it. What makes that decision harder than it should be is that the market refuses to publish numbers.

The research behind this page examined the pages currently ranking for tutoring queries across the UAE. Three of the six leading pages publish no price at all; one of them has a frequently asked question that asks what tutoring costs and then declines to answer it. The two that do publish quote in United States dollars, a currency no family in Umm Al Quwain transacts in. The practical effect is that a parent cannot tell whether a quoted figure is high, low or absurd until they have made six phone calls.

So this page publishes the ranges. They are market rates read in October 2026 from provider pages and published rate trackers, and they are presented as the market rather than as our prices, because a figure that is not attributed to somebody is worth nothing. Where a number could not be verified it is left out: there is a fine schedule circulating for unlicensed tutoring, for example, that no official source publishes, so it does not appear here.

The second half of the problem is that the hourly rate is the wrong thing to optimise. Two subjects supported weekly for two years costs several times what one subject supported properly for a term does, and the second is more often what was actually needed. A diagnosis that says four sessions and a review is a cheaper product than an open-ended booking at a lower rate, and it is the one that moves a grade.

There is a third factor specific to this emirate. Umm Al Quwain has limited international school provision, so students travel to Ajman, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah, and the evening left at the end of that journey is short. A cheap session at a time the student cannot use is not cheap. Any honest cost conversation here includes session length and timing, not only the per-hour figure.

One more framing point before the numbers. A tutoring bill is not a fee for attendance; it is a payment for a change in a mark. That makes it the only line in an education budget with a measurable outcome attached, and the only one a family can honestly audit. Marked work at the start, marked work at the end, and a decision in between is what turns a recurring cost into a finished piece of work.

What follows is the full picture: the market ranges by provider model, the variables that move a quote up or down, where tutoring sits against school fees and exam entry costs, how group formats change the per-student number, the extras to ask about before paying anything, and what a legitimate invoice and permit position look like.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cost differs by programme more than most families expect, because the work differs. A terminal-exam course and a coursework-heavy one need different numbers of hours in different parts of the year.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Eight to ten externally examined subjects at the end of Year 11, with Cambridge using four-digit codes and Core and Extended tiering in several subjects, and Pearson Edexcel using its own series. Support is typically concentrated in Year 11 and in two or three subjects rather than spread across the whole timetable, which is where families overspend.

Market rates quoted for IGCSE sit at the lower end of the published bands, with one UAE provider advertising IGCSE tutoring from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200 as of October 2026. For an Al Salamah family the more useful question is how many subjects genuinely need support, because three subjects at a modest rate costs more than one subject at a higher one.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across Higher and Standard Level plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Internal assessments are produced outside lesson time, so demand for support clusters around coursework deadlines rather than around exams, which changes when money is spent as well as how much.

Published rate trackers put specialist exam-year support at roughly AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more a month for weekly sessions, read October 2026. A Diploma family in this emirate should budget for coursework blocks in Year 12 as well as revision in Year 13, because the pattern of leaving it all to the final year costs more and achieves less.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each and reported as criterion levels. Support here is usually cheapest and most effective because it is about habits rather than content: how method and reflection are written, which is what the criteria reward and what later Diploma internal assessments will demand.

This is the stage where a small amount of spending has the longest payback, and it is the stage families skip. A short block in the Middle Years on criterion-based writing costs a fraction of an emergency Diploma coursework intervention three years later and removes much of the need for it.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International AS and A Level

Three or four externally examined subjects with no central core and a modular structure that differs between boards. Spending here is concentrated in revision and exam technique rather than coursework, and the modular pattern means a banked result can remove a subject from the budget part-way through.

For a household on a fixed-term posting the modular structure has a financial advantage worth knowing: results banked earlier reduce the exposure if the family relocates mid-course. That is a planning point rather than an academic one, but in this emirate fixed-term postings are common enough to matter.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subjects differ in how many hours they need to move a grade, which is the real driver of cost. Each note says what the hours are actually buying.

Mathematics (IGCSE 0580 and 4MA1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The best value subject to support, because fluency responds to volume and volume can be set as homework. A tutor who assigns thirty mixed multi-stage questions a week and marks a sample is buying more improvement per dirham than one who works through examples in the session.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

IB HL and SL

Among the most expensive subjects to support properly, because Higher Level problem solving needs long sessions and a genuine specialist. Published premium rates for named specialists reach AED 500 to 650 and above, though a qualified subject tutor in the 150 to 300 band covers most students' needs.

Physics

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0625 and 4PH1

Needs fewer hours than families expect once the real problem is identified, because the usual weakness is choosing between energy, momentum and force approaches rather than missing content. That is a technique fix of a handful of sessions, not a term of teaching.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0620 and 4CH1

Two separate cost centres: the written papers and the internal assessment. The internal assessment block is finite and tied to a deadline, which makes it the easier of the two to budget, and it is often where the recoverable marks are concentrated.

Biology

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0610 and 4BI1

Cheap to improve and routinely over-supported. Most of the available gain is in matching answers to command terms and in data-based questions on unfamiliar experiments, both of which are short pieces of work rather than ongoing weekly commitments.

English as a Second Language

IGCSE 0510 and 0511

Benefits from frequency rather than duration, so two short slots a week usually cost the same as one hour and achieve more. The marks are in register and task fulfilment, which respond to marked timed writing rather than to discussion.

Arabic as an additional language

School streams and Cambridge 0544

The clearest case for splitting an hour, because vocabulary retention drives the grade and retention follows frequency. A long weekly session is poor value here compared with two short ones, whatever the rate.

Business Studies and Economics

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0450 and 0455

Evaluation marks at the end of long questions are the most commonly abandoned on the paper and the cheapest to recover, because they are a structural habit. Content support in these subjects is usually the more expensive and less productive option.

Coursework and internal assessment support

IB Diploma components

Finite, deadline-bound and therefore budgetable: a defined block ending at submission rather than an open commitment. A tutor teaches the criteria and responds to the student's own draft; nothing is produced for the student at any price.

Exam technique and paper management

IGCSE, A Level and IB

The highest return per dirham of any support available and almost never sold as a product. Pacing, question selection and marks-per-minute discipline are visible on a mock script and fixable in a few sessions, with gains across every subject at once.

Geography and History

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0460 and 0470

Essay and source planning rather than more content is the efficient spend. Planning five essays in an hour teaches more about argument than writing one does, which also means fewer paid hours are needed to change the grade.

Computer Science and ICT

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0478

Variable in cost because prior programming exposure varies enormously between schools. A diagnostic session first is worth more here than in any other subject, because the gap could be two sessions or two terms and nobody can tell from a report.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Format changes the price per student substantially, and the cheapest format is not always the cheapest route to a grade. All three are taught online over live video.

One to one, by the session

The most expensive per hour and the only format that can work on one student's specific weakness in one paper of one syllabus. Worth paying for where the problem has been diagnosed and is individual. Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor sat at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour in October 2026, with premium named specialists published considerably higher.

  • Highest per-hour cost, lowest number of hours needed
  • Only format that targets an individual diagnosed weakness
  • Best value where the problem is specific rather than general
  • Session count proposed from a diagnosis, not a package

Online pair or small group

Two to four students on the same syllabus, at the same tier, at a genuinely similar point. Lower per student and pedagogically sound when those conditions hold, because explaining to a peer is a strong test of recall. It fails quietly when the students are not aligned, and the saving then buys a session that helps neither of them.

  • Lower cost per student where the group genuinely matches
  • Same syllabus, same tier, similar current position
  • Explanation between peers tests recall effectively
  • Not a substitute for one to one on an individual weakness

Finite diagnostic block

Four to six sessions aimed at one identified loss, beginning and ending with a marked piece of work so the result is a mark rather than an impression. The cheapest useful product in this market, because it has an end date built in and most families genuinely need a block rather than a standing arrangement.

  • A fixed number of sessions agreed before it starts
  • Begins and ends with marked work
  • Ends on a date rather than drifting onwards
  • Usually the honest answer when a parent asks for a year

What the UAE market charges, by provider model

The table below is the thing the leading pages in this market do not publish. It is built from rates read in October 2026 on UAE provider pages and from a published Dubai tutoring cost tracker, and it is organised by provider model rather than by brand, because the model is what determines the price. All of it is market context; none of it is an IB Gram price list, and a current quote should be asked for directly.

The bands overlap for a reason. A university student with a private tuition work permit and a strong grade in the subject genuinely can teach a Year 10 student well, and the low band reflects that. A specialist who teaches one Higher Level course full time across multiple exam series is doing a different job, and the upper bands reflect that too. The error families make is assuming the bands correspond to quality in a linear way; they correspond to scarcity and to the specificity of the match.

The in-home band is inflated by travel and should be read that way. A tutor pricing a visit into Umm Al Quwain is covering a round trip from Sharjah or Ajman around a one-hour lesson, and the rate reflects that whether or not it is itemised. Families who want to understand what they are paying for should ask what the rate would be for the same tutor teaching the same hour remotely.

Monthly package figures advertised in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four in-home double sessions. A rate tracker's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

What actually moves a quote up or down

Parents often assume the rate is set by the provider's brand, and it is mostly set by eight variables that have nothing to do with branding. Knowing them means a quote can be interrogated rather than accepted, and in several cases a family can change the number by changing the request rather than the supplier.

Scarcity is the biggest driver. A Higher Level Diploma specialist in a narrow subject commands more than an IGCSE mathematics tutor because the pool is smaller, and the same subject at a popular late-evening slot commands more than at a quiet one. In this emirate that matters directly: the hours a commuting household needs are late, which is the most contested part of the day nationally.

The second is proximity to the exam. Demand rises through the spring term, so a family that arranges support in October is buying in a looser market than one arranging it in March. Session length and frequency also move the number, usually sub-linearly, which means a ninety-minute session rarely costs double a forty-five minute one even though some providers price it that way.

The variables worth negotiating are not the obvious ones. Asking for a cheaper tutor usually buys a worse match. Asking for a shorter session at a quieter hour, a finite block instead of an open commitment, or a pair arrangement with another student on the same syllabus and tier can lower the total meaningfully without lowering the quality of the match.

Tutoring against the rest of the education bill

A tutoring rate read on its own is meaningless. Read next to the other numbers a family in this emirate pays, it is clearly a small share of total education spend and a large share of the discretionary part, which is exactly why it deserves scrutiny rather than either dismissal or panic.

School fees dominate everywhere. For context from the country's largest private market, Dubai's regulator confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a total of AED 2.5 billion. Fees for Al Salamah families are set by the regulator of whichever emirate the school sits in: the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge both approve tuition fees in their emirates.

The second large line for a household in this emirate is transport, and it is the one most often excluded from the comparison. A cross-emirate bus place or a daily private-car run to Sharjah is a real annual cost, and it also consumes the evening that tutoring has to fit into, which is a second cost paid in a different currency. Any honest budget conversation here puts those two lines next to each other.

Exam entry fees are the third. They are set by the centre rather than by any national schedule, vary by board and subject, and are usually bundled into school fees for internal candidates but charged separately for private candidates. No reliable single figure exists to publish, so the right action is to ask the exams officer or the centre directly rather than to rely on any number found online, including on competing pages that publish one.

When a pair or a small group is genuinely cheaper

Group formats are the obvious way to lower the per-student cost and they work under conditions narrow enough that they are worth stating before anyone tries. The saving is real when the conditions hold and entirely illusory when they do not, because a session pitched between two misaligned students teaches neither of them.

The conditions are three. The same syllabus, including the same board and the same code. The same tier or level, because a Core-tier and an Extended-tier student are sitting different papers. And a genuinely similar current position, which means similar recent marked work rather than similar school year. Two Year 11 students both entered for Cambridge 0580 Extended with comparable mock profiles can work together productively; two siblings two years apart cannot.

Where the conditions hold, the pedagogy is better than families expect. Explaining a method to a peer is one of the strongest tests of recall available, and a student who has to articulate why a step works finds out quickly whether they know it. A pair also sustains pace in a way a one-to-one session sometimes does not, because neither student wants to be the one holding it up.

Where they do not hold, the better economy is sequencing. Support one child or one subject properly for a block, finish it, then move to the next. That forces an uncomfortable decision about priority and is almost always clarifying, and it costs less over a year than two thin arrangements running in parallel.

Extras, conditions and the questions to ask before paying

  • Per hour or per lesson, and how long a lesson actually is
  • Cancellation notice and what happens to a missed session
  • Whether notes, marked work and solutions are included
  • The conditions attached to anything described as free
  • Whether the quoted figure includes VAT and whether a TRN is held

The headline rate is the beginning of the cost, and the differences between providers show up in the conditions rather than the number. These are the questions worth asking before any money moves, and a provider who answers them crisply is describing a process rather than improvising.

Ask whether the price is per hour or per lesson, because a fifty-minute lesson billed as an hour is a ten per cent difference nobody mentions. Ask what happens to a cancelled session and how much notice is required, which matters enormously in a household whose evening depends on a cross-emirate journey. Ask whether session notes, marked work and worked solutions are included or extra. Ask what a replacement costs if the match is wrong.

Ask about anything described as free. A trial lesson, an assessment or a first month described as free should come with its conditions stated on the same screen: how long, who is eligible, whether a card is required, and what happens at the end of it. A condition that only appears later is the single most common complaint in this market and it is entirely avoidable.

On tax, ask the one question that can be answered: does the quoted dirham figure include VAT, and does the provider hold a tax registration number. The VAT treatment of private tuition in the UAE depends on Federal Tax Authority rules and is not something this page states as fact; confirm it with the authority or a tax adviser rather than with a tutoring provider's marketing page.

06

Paying for a diagnosis before paying for hours

  • A marked paper distinguishes a content gap from a technique habit
  • Those two problems need different interventions at different costs
  • Most families who ask for a year need a four-to-six session block
  • Any provider proposing hours before seeing marked work is guessing

The largest avoidable cost in this market is not the rate; it is buying the wrong product. A family sees a disappointing grade, books general weekly support in that subject, and pays for a term of competent teaching that addresses something other than the actual problem. The grade moves little, everyone concludes tutoring does not work, and the money is gone.

A diagnosis first changes the purchase. One marked paper, read properly, distinguishes a content gap from a technique habit, and those two need completely different and differently priced interventions. A content gap across several topics is a weekly commitment through a term. A technique habit, such as missing interpretation sentences or answering description where explanation was asked, is four to six sessions and then done.

Most families who ask for a year need a block. That is an uncomfortable thing for a provider to say and it is the honest answer in the majority of cases, which is why the trial lesson here ends with a written number rather than a recommendation to continue indefinitely. If the number is four, it says four, and the block ends with a second marked piece so the result is visible as a mark.

The corollary is that a provider who proposes a long commitment before seeing any marked work is guessing, however reasonable the rate. The question to put to any provider is simple: what will you look at before telling me how many sessions we need? A good answer names a document. A poor one names a package.

07

What a free trial should and should not be

  • A good trial ends with a written diagnosis, useful even if you do not book
  • It should name the specific gap, not describe the subject
  • It should be willing to conclude that no support is needed
  • Send marked work in advance; it roughly triples what the session can do

A free first lesson is standard across this market and the quality of it varies more than the rates do. At its best it is a diagnostic session that produces a document. At its worst it is a sales meeting with a whiteboard, where a tutor is pleasant, the student is reassured, and nothing specific is identified, after which a package is proposed.

The test is what the family holds at the end. A useful trial produces a written note naming the specific gap, the criterion or command term behind it where relevant, what was attempted in the session and how the student responded, and a recommended number of sessions with a reason. That document is useful even if the family never books anything, which is the point: it is a service rather than a pitch.

There are things a trial should not do. It should not spend its time establishing rapport at the expense of looking at work; rapport develops over sessions and diagnosis does not. It should not conclude that everything is fine, because then there was nothing to diagnose and the family should be told to save their money. And it should not be free in a way that has conditions nobody mentioned, such as a card requirement or an automatic enrolment.

Bring the marked work. A trial lesson given a recent marked script and a one-line note from the parent about the pattern they noticed is worth roughly three times one given nothing, and the parent's observation is often the right one. Nobody sees a child's work more often than the person who signs the homework diary.

08

Permits, invoices and what a legitimate arrangement looks like

  • The permit is free for two years, so cost is no excuse for not holding one
  • No fine schedule is published; treat any quoted amount with suspicion
  • A centre's permit is not the same as an individual tutor's permit
  • No education regulator accredits tutoring providers in the UAE

Price and legitimacy are connected, because the cheapest end of this market is also where the permit question is most often skipped. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, so cost is not a reason for anyone to be without one.

The eligible categories are wide and include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. MoHRE's own service listing is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with no fee stated and a two working day completion time, applied for through the smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no amounts are published, so quoted figures should be treated with suspicion.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a separate case and needs its own educational services permit from the relevant authority, with an initial approval stage and annual renewal. An individual's permit does not cover a centre, and a centre's permit does not make its tutors individually licensed. Asking which document a provider holds is a fair question and the answer tells you what kind of organisation you are dealing with.

Nothing here is a regulator endorsement. No education authority in the UAE accredits tutoring providers, so phrases implying regulator approval should be read as a warning rather than a credential. What exists is a permit, and a legitimate tutor or provider can show it alongside a clear invoice that states what was delivered, over what period, and whether the amount includes VAT.

09

Fitting the budget to the slot Al Salamah actually has

A cost plan in this emirate that ignores the timetable will not survive contact with it. Most secondary-age students from Al Salamah travel out of the emirate for school, so the evening is short, and a session bought at a time the student cannot reliably use is money spent on absences. The sensible order is to fix the slot, then choose the format, then look at the rate.

The arithmetic starts from the real arrival time, including bus stops, which is usually later than a parent's estimate. From there, a short weekday session with a single objective is the format that holds, with long work moved to a weekend morning when the student is rested and the commute is not in the way. That combination also tends to cost less than two long weekday sessions, because it buys fewer total hours and uses them better.

Cancellation policy matters more here than elsewhere for the same reason. A household whose evening depends on a cross-emirate journey will lose sessions occasionally, and the difference between a provider who reschedules and one who charges is a real annual number. Ask about it before the first payment rather than after the first missed lesson.

The last point is about stopping. A plan reviewed every half term against marked work and ended when it has done its work costs a fraction of one that runs by default until results day. In a household where both money and evenings are scarce, a session that is no longer needed is costing twice.

Al Salamah and the districts around it

These notes cover where households sit in Umm Al Quwain and what each location adds to the cost of getting a child educated, which in this emirate is mostly a travel cost.

Al Salamah

The broad residential district holding much of Umm Al Quwain's modern housing. Most secondary-age students here travel out of the emirate for an international curriculum, so transport is a standing line in the education budget before tutoring is considered.

Umm Al Quwain old town

The historic harbour area on the peninsula. Households here face the same cross-emirate school run, and bus routes out of the emirate typically collect from both districts on the same circuit.

UAQ Marina

Waterfront development near the creek. Shares school routes and the same compressed evening with Al Salamah, so families in both districts often compare tutoring arrangements and timings.

Al Raas

The older peninsula area next to the harbour. Relevant to a cost conversation because households here sometimes share transport with Al Salamah families, which lowers the travel line but couples two timetables.

Ajman

The nearest international schooling option and the cheapest in travel terms. A school here leaves more of the evening intact, which makes a longer and therefore better-value tutoring session possible.

Sharjah city

The widest school choice within reach and the highest travel cost in both money and time. Families paying for this journey should factor the lost evening into any comparison of tutoring formats.

Ras Al Khaimah

North along the coast, with IB provision some families choose. Comparable journey time to Sharjah with a different traffic pattern, and usually a different fee structure at the school end.

Emirates Road corridor

The artery most school runs from Al Salamah use. Journey time varies enough between morning and afternoon to change which tutoring slot is viable, which is a cost question as much as a scheduling one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Salamah

Schools in Ajman and Sharjah used by Al Salamah families

Where most internationally schooled students from this district attend. School fees here are approved by the relevant emirate authority rather than by Umm Al Quwain, and the Sharjah Private Education Authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods for schools in that emirate, so the fee-setting process behind an invoice differs by emirate.

  • Ajman Academy
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • Wesgreen International School, Sharjah
  • The Westminster School, Sharjah
  • GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah

Umm Al Quwain and the northern alternative

Private schools inside Umm Al Quwain are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education and the emirate's international provision is limited. Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education there and also approves fees, curricula and assessment methods, which is why fee structures and increase processes differ between the two options.

  • Ministry of Education supervised private schools in Umm Al Quwain
  • RAK Academy, Ras Al Khaimah
  • British-curriculum schools in Ras Al Khaimah under the Department of Knowledge
  • Emirates National School, Ras Al Khaimah campus
  • Weekly boarding placements used by northern-emirates post-16 students

Named schools are context for where students in this district study; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with IB Gram is implied, and fee, curriculum and licence details should be confirmed with the school and the relevant regulator directly.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Fix the slot before the budget

Work out the real arrival time including bus stops, then choose the session format that fits it. A cheap session at an hour the student cannot reliably use is money spent on absences, which is the most common waste in this emirate.

  2. 02

Send marked work for the diagnosis

One recent assessment with the marker's annotations distinguishes a content gap from a technique habit, and those need different interventions at different costs. A provider who proposes hours before seeing any work is guessing.

  3. 03

Take the free trial and keep the note

The first lesson costs nothing and ends with a written diagnosis naming the gap and a recommended session count. That document is useful whether or not you book anything, which is the point of it.

  4. 04

Agree a session count and an end date

Finite blocks cost less over a year than open commitments and produce a measurable result, because they end with a second marked piece. If the diagnosis says four sessions, buy four and then decide again.

  5. 05

Ask the condition questions before paying

Per hour or per lesson, cancellation notice, whether notes and marked work are included, what a replacement tutor costs, and whether the quoted dirham figure includes VAT. These differences add up to more than the gap between two rates.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The numbers are published and attributed

Market dirham ranges appear on this page with the model they belong to and the month they were read. Three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all and the two that do quote in dollars, which is not a currency Umm Al Quwain families transact in.

No invented price list

Every figure here is a market rate rather than an IB Gram price, because a number presented without a source is worth nothing. For our own quote, ask; it depends on subject, level, scarcity and the slot.

Diagnosis before hours

The session count is proposed after looking at marked work, not before. Most families who ask for a year need a four-to-six session block, and saying so is cheaper for them and more effective than selling the year.

Finite blocks with a visible end

A block begins and ends with a marked piece of work, so the outcome is a mark rather than an impression. Support that runs by default until results day is the most expensive product in this market.

Online delivery, so travel is not in the rate

Lessons are taught live online, one to one, which removes the round trip that inflates in-home rates into this emirate and removes the cancellation risk that comes with it.

Conditions stated, not discovered

Anything described as free carries its conditions on the same screen, and the questions about cancellation, inclusions and VAT are answered before payment rather than after the first missed session.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Salamah: your questions answered

What does an IB or IGCSE tutor cost per hour for an Al Salamah family?+

Market rates read in October 2026 run roughly from AED 33 to AED 150 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 180 to AED 500 for in-home visits once travel is built in, AED 200 to AED 450 and above for IB and IGCSE specialists, and AED 500 to AED 650 and above for premium named or examiner-marketed tutors. One UAE provider advertises IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Those are market figures rather than our prices; ask us directly for a current quote.

Why do most tutoring websites refuse to publish a price?+

Because quoting a number invites comparison and because the real figure depends on scarcity, level, slot and format. The research behind this page found three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all, with one posing the question in its own frequently asked questions and then declining to answer it, and the two that do publish quoting in United States dollars. The practical cost to a parent is six phone calls before they can tell whether a quote is reasonable, which is why the ranges appear here instead.

Is the hourly rate the number we should be comparing?+

No. Duration controls the total far more than the rate does: two subjects supported weekly for two years costs several times what one subject supported properly for a term does, and the second is more often what was needed. A higher rate with a diagnosis and a four-session block is usually cheaper in total than a lower rate with an open commitment nobody reviews. Compare the proposed number of sessions and the basis for it, then compare rates within that.

What makes one tutor cost twice as much as another?+

Mostly scarcity and specificity rather than general quality. A Higher Level specialist in a narrow Diploma subject commands more because very few people teach it; a popular late-evening slot commands more than a quiet afternoon one; demand rises through the spring term as exams approach. In-home rates carry a round trip inside them. Premium positioning adds a further layer, and where a tutor is described as an examiner it is reasonable to ask what evidence supports the claim before paying for it.

Can we lower the cost without accepting a worse tutor?+

Yes, by changing the request rather than the supplier. Ask for a shorter weekday session with one objective plus a single weekend block instead of two long weekday hours. Offer a quieter slot where you can. Agree a finite block with a session count and an end date rather than an open commitment. If another student is on the same board, the same code, the same tier and at a genuinely similar point, a pair arrangement lowers the per-student cost without diluting the match.

How much do school fees and transport change the picture?+

They dominate it. Fees are the largest line and are approved by the regulator of the emirate the school sits in, so a Sharjah school's fees are approved by the Sharjah Private Education Authority and a Ras Al Khaimah school's by the Department of Knowledge. For context from the largest market, Dubai's regulator confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no fee increase for 2026-27. For this emirate, cross-emirate transport is the second standing line and it also consumes the evening tutoring has to fit into, which is a second cost in a different currency.

How much does it cost to enter one IGCSE exam?+

There is no national schedule to quote, which is why no honest figure appears here. Entry fees are set by the exam centre, vary by board and subject, and are usually bundled into school fees for internal candidates while being charged separately for private candidates. Ask your child's exams officer or the centre directly for the current figure for the specific subjects and series. Any page publishing a single number for this is either quoting one centre without saying so or has invented it.

When does a pair or group session actually save money?+

When three conditions hold: the same syllabus including board and code, the same tier or level, and a genuinely similar current position based on recent marked work rather than school year. Two Year 11 students both entered for Cambridge 0580 Extended with comparable mocks can work well together, and explaining to a peer is a strong test of recall. Siblings two years apart on different courses cannot share usefully, and the apparent saving buys a session that helps neither of them.

What should we ask about before paying anything?+

Five things. Whether the price is per hour or per lesson, and how long a lesson actually is. The cancellation notice required and what happens to a missed session, which matters a great deal when your evening depends on a cross-emirate journey. Whether session notes, marked work and worked solutions are included. What a replacement tutor costs if the match is wrong. And whether the quoted dirham figure includes VAT and whether the provider holds a tax registration number.

Does tuition in the UAE have VAT on it?+

That depends on Federal Tax Authority rules and is not something a tutoring page should state as fact, so this page does not. What you can and should ask any provider is narrower and answerable: does the quoted dirham figure include VAT, and does the provider hold a tax registration number. If the tax treatment itself matters to your household, confirm it with the Federal Tax Authority or a tax adviser rather than with a provider's marketing material.

Is anything described as a free trial genuinely free?+

It should be, and the conditions should appear on the same screen as the word. Ask how long the trial is, who is eligible, whether a card is required, and what happens at the end of it. A condition that only surfaces afterwards is the most common complaint in this market and entirely avoidable. A good trial is also a service rather than a pitch: it should end with a written note naming the specific gap and a recommended session count, useful to you even if you never book.

Why insist on seeing marked work before quoting a number of sessions?+

Because a marked paper distinguishes the two problems that look identical from outside and cost very different amounts. If losses cluster in one or two topics it is a content gap, which is a weekly commitment through a term. If losses are spread thinly as half-earned questions across the whole paper, it is a technique habit, which is four to six sessions and then finished. A provider proposing a long commitment before seeing any work is guessing, however reasonable their rate.

Do cheaper tutors still need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes, and the permit is free, so cost is not a reason for anyone to lack one. The private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include school and government teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Is it cheaper to wait until the term before the exams?+

Almost never. Demand and therefore rates rise through the spring term, availability of specialists in narrow subjects narrows, and the late-evening slots this emirate needs are the first to go. More importantly, the work that moves a grade most, namely technique repair and coursework support, takes weeks to produce a result and cannot be compressed into the final fortnight. Arranging in October buys a looser market, a better match and more time, usually for fewer total hours.

At what point should an Al Salamah family stop buying sessions?+

Set the review date in advance and use marked work rather than impressions. A block should end with a second marked piece so the result is a mark, and a weekly arrangement should be reviewed every half term against the grade the student started at. If the mark has moved and the gap has closed, stop. If it has not moved, the diagnosis was wrong and the response is to change it rather than add hours. Support that runs by default until results day is the most expensive product available.

Ask for the number, and ask what it is based on

The useful conversation from Al Salamah starts with two things: the hour your child is genuinely free after the journey home, and one recent piece of marked work. Send those with the subject, the board, the syllabus code and the tier, and we will propose a specialist, a format that fits the evening, and a session count with a reason attached. The first lesson is free, taught online one to one over live video, and ends with a written diagnosis you keep whether or not you book. For our own current rate, ask directly; the figures on this page are the market's, not ours.
