IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Sharjah Garden City

Search for an IB IGCSE tutor near me from Sharjah Garden City and you get a list of people sorted by distance. Sorted by what your child is actually sitting - Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at higher level, Cambridge 0620 Extended, Edexcel 4PH1 - the list looks completely different. This page is written from the syllabus up: what each course assesses, the command terms that decide marks, the traps in the mark scheme, and how past papers should be used. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched to the course and level, not to a postcode
  • Teaching from your child's own syllabus and past papers
  • Command-term and mark-scheme work from the first session
  • One-to-one over live video; no home visits anywhere in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah Garden City

The useful question is which course, not which neighbourhood

Parents in Sharjah Garden City type 'near me' because that is how search works, not because distance is what they care about. What they care about is whether the person teaching their child understands the course in front of them. Those are different questions, and only one of them has a good answer on this corridor.

Consider how specific the courses actually are. 'IB maths' is two different subjects: Analysis and Approaches, which is proof and calculus heavy, and Applications and Interpretation, which is modelling and statistics heavy. Each runs at higher and standard level. 'IGCSE maths' is at least two more: Cambridge 0580, tiered Core and Extended across its own paper pattern, and Pearson 4MA1, with two equally weighted papers and a different question style. That is six distinct teaching jobs behind one word, and a tutor is good at some of them and not others.

The same is true in the sciences, and worse. A Cambridge science candidate sits a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and an alternative-to-practical paper, each with its own failure modes. An IB science student sits terminal papers and submits an internal assessment marked against criteria by letter. A tutor who has spent five years on IB chemistry internal assessments may never have taught a student to answer an alternative-to-practical question, and vice versa. Neither is a weakness; both are specialisations.

Sort a list of tutors by distance from Sharjah Garden City and you get people whose specialisation is unknown and whose availability is set by traffic on the southern corridor. Sort by course and level and you get somebody who can tell you, in the first conversation, which three topics are costing your child marks. We think the second sort is the one worth doing, which is why we match on syllabus and teach over live video rather than sending anybody to an address.

This page is therefore unusually technical for a tutoring page. It sets out the maths routes side by side, the places where science mark schemes punish loose language, what each command term demands, how to use past papers without burning them, what the English courses actually reward, and where a tutor's work stops and the student's own work begins.

A warning about how specialisation is advertised. Listings in this market say 'all subjects, all levels' because that maximises enquiries, and the phrase tells you nothing about whether the person has taught your child's course. The useful credential is not a degree title or a photograph of a certificate; it is the ability to describe the paper structure and the common mark losses in the specific course, unprompted, in under a minute.

If you only take one habit from it, take this one: when you contact any tutor, lead with the course and the level or code. 'Year 11 science' gets you a generalist. '0625 Extended, Paper 6 is the problem, mocks in three weeks' gets you somebody who can start work in session one.

At a glance

  • Six distinct teaching jobs hide behind the phrase 'maths tutor'
  • Cambridge sciences include an alternative-to-practical paper with its own technique
  • IB internal assessments are marked against criteria by letter, not by percentage
  • Command-term confusion is the most common avoidable mark loss in both systems
  • Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, never as a UAE home visit
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three courses cover the overwhelming majority of requests from this corridor. The differences between them are not cosmetic; they change what a tutor does in every single session.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects at higher or standard level, plus Theory of Knowledge, an extended essay and creativity, activity, service. Each subject combines terminal examinations with an internal assessment marked against published criteria and moderated by the IB. Teaching has to serve both halves, and they reward different work: criteria-driven precision in the assessment, exam technique in the papers.

Sharjah has a small number of schools authorised for the Diploma Programme, so students from the southern corridor often travel a long way to school. That is the practical reason a subject specialist is easier to reach by video than by car, and why most of our Diploma work in this emirate is delivered online.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Assessed against criteria by letter with task-specific descriptors issued per assignment, and no external papers in most subjects. Good teaching here is descriptor-literate: it practises the thing the criterion rewards, which is usually precision with command terms, investigation structure and conclusions justified from the evidence collected.

In Sharjah these years also carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies lessons alongside the international curriculum, so the week is full. Short sessions aimed at one criterion work; long general homework supervision competes with the school's own workload and loses.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Terminal written examinations with published mark schemes, tiered at Cambridge into Core and Extended. Because the grade is made in the examination room, the most valuable tutoring activity is timed paper work marked against the official mark scheme, with errors logged by question type rather than by topic.

UAE candidates sit the June and November series; the February/March Cambridge series is offered in India only. Entries go through the school's centre, and each centre belongs to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version, so only the exams officer's copy should be trusted.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

IB subjects first, described by what the course actually assesses and where Sharjah students most often lose marks. The level - higher or standard - changes the answer, so it is part of the match.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic technique, proof and calculus carry the papers. Students arriving from a secure Extended IGCSE background still lose marks because method must be written and justified rather than implied. At higher level the proof content and the depth of calculus are the usual pressure points.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use dominate. It is not the easy route: higher level statistics is demanding, and some engineering degree routes expect Analysis and Approaches instead, so the choice has consequences beyond the next two years.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms are where marks concentrate. Extended responses are marked for precision: naming an observation rather than asserting a conclusion, and giving conditions rather than gesturing at them. The internal assessment needs controlled variables more than an ambitious topic.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and fields, with sign conventions and unstated assumptions causing most avoidable losses in multi-step problems. Uncertainty treatment is rewarded in the investigation and is almost always underdone, which makes it an efficient thing to coach early.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy, so the grade turns on command terms and on data-based questions. Students who revise by rereading plateau quickly; students who answer past data questions under timing and check against the mark scheme move. Statistical treatment in the investigation is a recurring weakness.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams and evaluation earn the marks. A labelled diagram with correctly drawn shifts is quick to teach and routinely sloppy. Higher level adds quantitative work that surprises students who chose the subject expecting essays, and the commentaries need one syllabus section applied tightly to one article.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis and the individual oral decide most of the grade. Orals fail when the global issue is too broad to anchor in two extracts. The higher level essay needs a text chosen early enough to reread, which is a scheduling decision disguised as a literary one.

Business Management

HL and SL

The toolkit must be applied to the case rather than described. Students lose marks writing everything they know about a concept instead of using it to reach a judgement about the organisation in front of them.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Cambridge and Pearson side, with the structural detail that decides which tutor is right. Send the code; it is the single most useful thing in an enquiry.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Cambridge tiers the papers and Pearson sets two equally weighted ones, so the pacing strategy differs. Confirm the current structure and weighting in the syllabus document your school issues rather than from a tutoring page, then practise to that shape under timing.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended · Single tier at Edexcel

Cambridge candidates face a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and an alternative-to-practical paper. The last of those is a separate skill: describing method, identifying variables, spotting a source of error. It can be taught in three or four sessions and is frequently ignored until the week before.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole ratios taken from the wrong species, electrolysis products guessed rather than reasoned, and organic conditions written approximately. The mark scheme wants state symbols and precise observations, so sloppy writing costs marks a student has genuinely earned.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Marks sit in command words and in diagram work rather than in recall. Transport in plants, genetic crosses and experimental design are the questions where a tutor's hour converts directly into marks.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

The bridge to A Level mathematics or higher level IB maths. Calculus notation, radian measure and the factor theorem expose the gap between comfortable and merely competent algebra within the first month.

First Language English (0500)

Single tier

Directed writing and the reading passages carry the grade. The commonest loss is summarising when the question asks for analysis of effect, closely followed by an unvaried register across both papers. Timed writing annotated against the mark scheme moves this subject quickly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of working, all one-to-one over live video, all starting with a free trial lesson. The right one depends on what the syllabus says is coming next.

Course-long subject teaching

A weekly slot with one specialist in one course, running alongside school teaching rather than duplicating it. The tutor works from the syllabus document, keeps a record of which topics have been secured, and sets practice that matches the paper the student will actually sit.

  • Same tutor and course throughout
  • Topic-by-topic record against the syllabus
  • Practice matched to the real paper structure

Paper-technique intensive

Short and specific: command terms, timing, how to read a question, how to allocate minutes to marks. Aimed at the student who knows the content and underperforms on paper, which is a surprisingly large share of candidates in both systems.

  • Command-term drill against real questions
  • Timed sections rather than whole papers at first
  • Error log by question type, not by topic

Internal assessment and investigation coaching

For IB students: criteria read in the first session, a research question narrowed until it can be answered with available data, method and uncertainty planned before anything is written. The tutor explains and questions; the student writes every word.

  • Criteria by letter read and applied early
  • Data and method planned before drafting
  • Feedback against descriptors, never editing

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah Garden City

01

Four maths courses behind one search term

A family in Sharjah Garden City looking for maths help is looking for one of at least four different things, and the differences are large enough that a tutor strong in one can be actively unhelpful in another. Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency, proof and calculus, with method written out and justified. Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistics and intelligent use of technology. Cambridge 0580 rewards accuracy and speed across a tiered paper structure. Pearson 4MA1 rewards the same arithmetic competence with a different question style and two equally weighted papers.

The choice between the two IB routes has consequences beyond the classroom. Some engineering and mathematics degree routes expect Analysis and Approaches, and a student who takes Applications and Interpretation because it sounds gentler can find a prerequisite missing two years later. The reverse error is equally common: a student who takes Analysis and Approaches at higher level on ambition alone and spends DP2 underwater. The sensible method is evidence - attempt questions from both courses, with somebody who knows both, and decide from the scripts.

On the British side, the tier decision has the same structure. Core caps the grade; Extended carries the full range but demands content a Core candidate never meets. The test is whether the student can access the Extended-only topics and finish the harder paper in the time available, and two sessions of past-paper questions answer it better than a term of impressions. Changes have to go through the school before its internal entry deadline.

What all four courses share is that the paper structure should shape practice from early on. Confirm the current structure and weighting from the syllabus document your school issues - it is the authoritative version and it does change between syllabus cycles - then practise to that shape under timing rather than doing untimed exercises from a textbook.

Where science mark schemes punish loose language

  • Observation versus conclusion: the mark scheme wants what you saw
  • State symbols and conditions are marks, not decoration
  • Gradients must be calculated over a large interval, not read off
  • Alternative-to-practical answers need named instruments and controls
  • Command terms are instructions, not synonyms

Science marks are lost in two places: things the student does not know, and things the student knows but writes imprecisely. The second category is larger than most families expect, and it is the faster of the two to fix, which makes it the obvious place for a tutor to start.

Chemistry is the clearest example. A mark scheme asking for an observation wants 'a white precipitate forms', not 'it goes cloudy', and certainly not the conclusion 'so it is a sulfate'. Equations want state symbols. Organic questions want conditions - temperature, catalyst, concentration - rather than a reaction arrow and optimism. None of that is difficult chemistry; all of it is a writing habit, and habits respond quickly to marking against the real mark scheme.

In physics the equivalent is the unstated assumption. A multi-step problem answered with a number and no working earns little when the method carries the marks. A graph question answered by reading a value rather than calculating a gradient over a large interval loses the technique mark. On the alternative-to-practical paper, candidates who have never narrated a method aloud produce vague answers about 'measuring carefully' where the scheme wants a named instrument, a repeat and a control.

Biology concentrates its losses in command terms and in data questions. 'Describe' asks for what happens; 'explain' asks why; 'suggest' invites a reasoned possibility from unfamiliar context. A candidate who answers all three the same way caps their long-answer marks regardless of how well they know the content. In IB sciences the same discipline applies to extended responses, with the added expectation that uncertainty and limitation are addressed honestly in the internal assessment.

03

What each command term actually demands

Both systems publish command terms, and both expect students to treat them as instructions. In practice most candidates treat them as a general invitation to write about the topic. This is the single most common avoidable mark loss we see in scripts from Sharjah schools, across subjects and across boards.

The fix is mechanical and quick. Take a past paper, cover the content, and sort the questions by command term. Ask the student what each term requires before attempting any of them. Most students can state the difference between describe and explain when asked directly and then fail to apply it under time pressure, which tells you the problem is habit rather than understanding.

There is a second layer in the IB. Internal assessment criteria use their own language - evaluation, limitation, justification - and each criterion's descriptors spell out what a higher level of achievement looks like. Students who read those descriptors in the first week of the project write differently from students who read them after the first draft comes back. Reading them together is one of the highest-value hours a tutor can spend.

The table below is the version worth keeping beside a student while they work. It is deliberately practical rather than exhaustive: a handful of terms that cover most of the damage.

One more habit is worth building alongside it. Before writing anything, a student should underline the command term and the number of marks, then decide how many distinct points the answer needs. A four-mark explain question wants four linked statements, not one statement written four ways, and that single piece of arithmetic recovers marks across every paper in both systems.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT A MARK SCHEME EXPECTS
Command termWhat it requiresTypical weak answerWhat earns the mark
StateA short fact, no reasoningA paragraph of contextThe fact alone, written precisely
DescribeWhat happens, in orderWhy it happensThe sequence of observable events
ExplainWhy it happens, with a mechanismA description repeatedCause linked to effect in a chain
SuggestA reasoned possibility in new contextA guess with no justificationA plausible idea with the reasoning shown
EvaluateBoth sides, then a judgementA list of advantagesComparison plus a supported conclusion
CalculateA numerical answer with methodA number aloneWorking, units and appropriate rounding
04

Using past papers without wasting them

Past papers are the most valuable resource a candidate has and the most frequently squandered. There are only so many of them, and a paper done untimed, unmarked and half-completed teaches almost nothing while using one up. The protocol matters more than the quantity.

Our method is consistent across both systems. Early in a course, use individual questions by topic, untimed, to check whether a topic is secure. Mid-course, use sections under timing. In the final block, use whole papers under full exam conditions, marked against the published mark scheme between sessions, with the review session spent only on the question types the error log identifies. Never mark a paper leniently to protect a student's feelings - the paper is the only honest feedback mechanism available before the real one.

Two practical constraints. Papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to the boards, so we reference the official sources and point families to them rather than distributing copies. Your child's school is the proper route to current material, and a tutoring service offering a drive full of 'exclusive' board documents is distributing somebody else's copyright. For unreleased material, the exposure is worse than copyright: it is a malpractice question attached to your child.

The other constraint is honesty about marking. A tutor who marks generously produces a student who is confident and unprepared. We would rather deliver an uncomfortable mark in March than a surprise in June, and the error log exists so that the discomfort has somewhere useful to go.

05

English in both systems: what actually earns the grade

  • A global issue must be narrow enough to anchor in two extracts
  • Directed writing is assessed on effect, not on summary
  • Register and audience are marks in every one of these courses
  • Writing the same task three times beats reading three more texts

English is the subject where families most often assume a general tutor will do, and the subject where course-specific knowledge is most quickly visible. The IB's English A: Language and Literature assesses unseen textual analysis and an individual oral built around a global issue anchored in two extracts. Cambridge First Language English 0500 assesses directed writing and reading analysis across its papers. English as a Second Language 0510 assesses a formulaic set of exercises with specific word limits and register expectations.

Each of those rewards something different. The IB oral fails when the global issue is too broad - a student who chooses 'inequality' will produce generalities, where 'the treatment of domestic workers in these two extracts' produces analysis. Cambridge directed writing fails when the student summarises the passage instead of analysing the effect of its language, or writes both papers in the same register. The second-language exercises fail on word limits and on missing the audience, both of which are entirely coachable.

What all three share is that improvement comes from writing under timing and then annotating against the mark scheme or criteria, rather than from reading more. Students are often asked to read more and rarely asked to write the same task three times and compare the versions. The second activity is where marks move, and it is uncomfortable enough that most students avoid it without a tutor sitting there.

For students whose home language is not English - common across Sharjah schools - there is a further point. Fluency in conversation does not predict performance on an analysis paper, and a student can be entirely comfortable speaking while losing marks for register, structure and precision in writing. Those are specific, teachable things, not a general language problem to be worried about.

06

Why the specialist is rarely the nearest person

Everything above describes a fairly narrow kind of expertise: knowing a particular course, its paper structure, its command terms and its mark scheme. The population of people with that expertise for any given course is small, and it is distributed by where those people chose to live rather than by where demand appears.

Sharjah Garden City is on the emirate's southern corridor, away from the older tutoring districts. The practical consequence is that a distance-sorted list contains generalists and, in the IB subjects especially, very few people who have taught the specific course at the specific level. Insisting on proximity in that situation means accepting a generalist, which is a real trade-off rather than a neutral one.

The money makes the same argument. Across published UAE rate cards, a qualified subject tutor teaching online runs roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, while an in-home visit is quoted between AED 180 and 500 once travel is absorbed, and named or examiner-branded tutoring reaches AED 500 to 650 and above. For an address on this corridor the in-home premium sits high in that range, and what it buys is a drive. It does not buy knowledge of a command term.

So the arrangement we offer is a specialist matched to the course, teaching one to one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school run. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses - home visits are a service we run only in India - and the free trial lesson is how a family tests whether the format works for their child before committing to anything.

07

What course-specific teaching costs, and what it replaces

Specialist teaching is not the most expensive thing in this market, which surprises families who assume subject depth carries a premium. The premium in the UAE tutoring market attaches to travel and to branding, not to syllabus knowledge, and that is worth knowing before a quote lands.

Across published UAE rate cards, budget online tutoring starts around AED 45 an hour and is generally delivered by university students. A qualified subject tutor teaching online runs roughly AED 150 to 300. An in-home visit is quoted between AED 180 and 500 once travel is absorbed. Named or examiner-branded tutoring reaches AED 500 to 650 and above, and examiner status is rarely evidenced and never transfers to your child's paper. Bestimate's Dubai cost estimates, read in October 2026, put a single weekly session at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at budget level and AED 600 to 1,200 with a qualified tutor.

What course-specific teaching replaces is the diagnosis period. A generalist spends three or four sessions working out what the course requires and where this student is failing; a specialist does that from one marked script before the first lesson. At market rates those saved sessions are worth several hundred dirhams, which usually exceeds any difference in the hourly rate. That is the honest economic argument for specialism, and it is unrelated to anybody's enthusiasm.

These are market figures published so that any quote - ours included - can be judged against something checkable. There is no IB Gram price list on this page: ask us directly, and start with the free trial lesson, which costs nothing and produces a marked script you keep either way.

08

Where a tutor's work stops

A page this focused on syllabus detail should be equally precise about limits. There are things a subject specialist can do, things they cannot, and things they must not, and families are entitled to know which is which before they book anybody.

A tutor can teach content, diagnose from a script, drill command terms, mark to a mark scheme, plan an investigation's method and uncertainty treatment, read a draft and explain which criterion it fails, and rehearse an oral to time. A tutor cannot guarantee a grade - nobody can, and anybody who offers a number is selling confidence. A tutor cannot replace two years of teaching in a short block, and should say which topics are being left alone when time is short.

What a tutor must not do is produce assessed work. No writing, no redrafting, no editing to completion of an internal assessment, extended essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or coursework. IB Gram does not sell completed assessments of any kind. This market contains operations that do, at prices in the thousands of dirhams, and the malpractice consequence lands on the student's diploma rather than on the seller's invoice.

Nor do we describe ourselves as approved, licensed or accredited by any education authority, because we are not. IB Gram is a tutor-matching platform with no UAE premises. A service claiming regulator approval should be asked for the permit number, and in our experience the request ends the conversation.

Where we tutor

Where the search looks, and what the syllabus argument means for each

Areas around Sharjah Garden City, read through the question this page is asking: how likely is it that a course specialist lives there, and what does choosing locally actually cost you?

Tilal City

The adjacent community on the same corridor. Same arithmetic: a short local list, generalist-weighted, with Diploma subject specialists effectively absent within a reasonable drive.

Muwaileh

The nearest school cluster, so the densest local supply. Good odds of finding somebody who teaches IGCSE maths; poor odds of finding somebody who has supervised a Diploma physics investigation.

University City

Where most budget supply originates. University students may hold the private tuition permit and some teach well, but course-specific experience - a particular code, a particular level - is rare and worth asking about directly.

Al Zahia

A neighbour with the same commuting pattern. Sessions before six o'clock are realistic only when the student travels home directly from school, which is worth settling before a slot is fixed.

Aljada

Central and well supplied, including group revision classes. Group classes cannot run command-term work for an individual script, which is where most of the recoverable marks on this page actually are.

Al Majaz

The emirate's older tutoring district, with deeper supply including some genuine specialists - and a drive out to the southern corridor that is priced into any in-home quote.

Al Qasimia

Central Sharjah, mature school mix, and the same seasonal problem: the specialists who do exist locally are booked solid in the weeks before a series.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Lead with the course and level

Tell us the exact course - Analysis and Approaches at higher level, 0620 Extended, 4PH1 - plus the year group and the next dated assessment. That single line is what makes a specialist match possible, and it is the difference between teaching in session one and diagnosing for three.

  2. 02

A script marked before we meet

Send a recent paper, test or draft if you have one. The matched tutor marks it against the published mark scheme or criteria first, so the free trial lesson starts from the evidence: which topics are missing, which losses are technique, which command terms are being misread.

  3. 03

    Teaching to the real paper

Sessions work from the syllabus document your school issues and from past papers used to a protocol - questions by topic early, sections under timing mid-course, whole papers in the final block. Scheduling is in Gulf Standard Time around the school run.

  4. 04

Review on marks, with the hard calls said out loud

At six sessions we look at timed scores and criterion feedback. If the fit is wrong we change tutor and keep the plan. If the time left cannot cover everything, we name the topics being abandoned rather than pretending the schedule works.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by course, not by distance

Six teaching jobs hide behind the word 'maths' and three behind 'science'. We match on the course and level, which is the only way a family on the southern corridor reaches a Diploma subject specialist at all.

Mark schemes and criteria, used properly

Papers are marked against the board's published mark scheme and internal assessment work is read against the published descriptors. Errors are logged by question type, so review time goes where the marks are rather than where the student feels comfortable.

Past papers rationed deliberately

There is a finite supply of past papers and a protocol for using them: topic questions early, timed sections mid-course, full papers under conditions at the end. Burning them untimed and unmarked in the first month is a waste nobody notices until it matters.

Official sources, not bootleg documents

Syllabus documents, mark schemes and past papers belong to the boards. We cite and link them and point families to the school for current versions rather than distributing copies, which is both a copyright and a malpractice issue.

Delivery and limits stated plainly

All UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs no home visits here, as that service exists only in India. We do not guarantee grades and we do not produce assessed work, and both of those are commitments rather than disclaimers.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah Garden City: your questions answered

Does a subject specialist really matter more than a tutor nearby in Sharjah Garden City?+

For anything assessed by a published mark scheme or a set of criteria, yes. The marks sit in course-specific behaviour: command terms, method written out, observations rather than conclusions, uncertainty handled honestly. A generalist can keep a student company through homework; a specialist can tell you in one marked script which three habits are costing the grade. Proximity matters for attendance, and we solve attendance with live video instead - lessons are one-to-one online, and IB Gram sends nobody to a UAE address.

Should my child take IB Maths Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation?+

Decide from evidence rather than reputation. Analysis and Approaches is algebra, proof and calculus heavy and is expected by some maths-heavy degree routes; Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics heavy and is not an easy option at higher level. The reliable method is to attempt questions from both with somebody who teaches both, then look at the scripts. Check the prerequisites of the degree subjects your child is considering before the choice is locked, because reversing it later is disruptive and sometimes impossible.

What is an alternative-to-practical paper and how do you prepare for it?+

In Cambridge sciences it is the paper that tests practical skills in writing: identifying variables, describing a method precisely, naming instruments, spotting sources of error and suggesting improvements. Candidates who have done plenty of laboratory work still lose marks here because they have never had to narrate a method. It is one of the most coachable components in either system - three or four focused sessions with past questions, marked against the published scheme, usually produce a visible change in the next mock.

Why do my child's science answers lose marks when the content is right?+

Almost always because of precision. The mark scheme asks for an observation and gets a conclusion: 'it goes cloudy' instead of 'a white precipitate forms'. Equations arrive without state symbols. Organic reactions arrive without conditions. Multi-step calculations arrive as a number with no method, in a question where the method carries the marks. None of that is difficult science, and all of it is a writing habit that changes within a few sessions once somebody marks the work strictly against the real scheme.

How do command terms differ between IB and Cambridge papers?+

Less than you would expect, which is good news. Both publish command terms and both treat them as instructions: state asks for a fact, describe for what happens, explain for why with a mechanism, suggest for a reasoned possibility in unfamiliar context, evaluate for both sides plus a judgement. The IB adds criterion language in internal assessments - evaluation, limitation, justification - with descriptors spelling out what higher achievement looks like. Students who read those descriptors in week one of a project write differently from those who meet them after a first draft.

How should past papers be used across a two-year course?+

In three phases, because the supply is finite. Early on, individual questions by topic, untimed, to test whether a topic is secure. Mid-course, sections under timing to build pace. In the final block, whole papers under exam conditions, marked against the published mark scheme between sessions, with review limited to the question types your error log names. Papers done untimed, unmarked and half-finished teach nothing while using up a resource you will want in the final ten weeks.

Can you supply past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents?+

We reference them and point you to the official sources, and we do not distribute copies. Those documents belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB, and your child's school is the proper route to the current versions - syllabuses change between cycles, so the school's copy is also the correct one. Any tutoring service offering a shared drive full of board material is distributing somebody else's copyright, and where material is unreleased it creates a malpractice question that attaches to your child rather than to the seller.

My child speaks English fluently but loses marks in English papers. Why?+

Because conversational fluency and analytical writing are different skills, and the papers assess the second. Marks go on register, structure, precision and - in Cambridge directed writing - analysis of effect rather than summary of content. In the IB oral, the commonest failure is choosing a global issue too broad to anchor in two extracts. All of those are specific and teachable. The method that works is writing the same task two or three times and annotating each version against the mark scheme, which almost nobody does without a tutor present.

Is Core or Extended the right entry for my Cambridge candidate?+

Test it rather than argue about it. Extended carries the full grade range and includes content a Core candidate never meets; Core caps the grade but a secure top Core grade beats a scraped Extended one. The question is whether the student can access the Extended-only topics and finish the harder paper in the time, and two sessions of Extended past-paper questions will tell a specialist that. Any change must go through the school before its internal entry deadline, so the conversation needs to happen early rather than after the mocks.

How much does subject-specialist tuition cost around Sharjah Garden City?+

Market figures rather than ours: budget online tutoring starts around AED 45 an hour across published UAE rate cards, a qualified subject tutor teaching online runs roughly AED 150 to 300, an in-home visit is quoted at AED 180 to 500 once travel is absorbed, and named or examiner-branded tutoring reaches AED 500 to 650 and above. Bestimate's Dubai estimates, read in October 2026, put one weekly session at AED 600 to 1,200 a month with a qualified tutor. Ask us directly and begin with the free trial lesson.

What can a tutor do about an IB internal assessment, exactly?+

Read the criteria with the student, narrow the research question until the available data can answer it, teach the statistics or technique the investigation needs, plan the method and uncertainty treatment, and read drafts to explain which criterion is not being met. What a tutor cannot do is write, redraft or edit any part of the submitted work, or hand over a topic with the analysis already done. IB Gram does not sell completed assessments. The malpractice consequence falls on the student's diploma, which settles the argument.

Can one tutor teach both my children if they are on different courses?+

Only where the courses are genuinely close - two Cambridge sciences, or IGCSE and IB maths at the lower levels. Across a Diploma higher level subject and a Year 10 IGCSE course, the honest answer is that one of the two children gets the weaker teaching, and it is usually the older one. We would rather give you two specialists in consecutive slots on the same evening, with one point of contact and two written plans, than a single tutor whose second course is approximate.

How soon does course-specific coaching show up in a mark?+

Technique changes - command terms, precision of language, timing - usually show up in the next timed assessment, which is often three to six weeks away. Content gaps take longer because they need teaching and then practice. What we will not do is quote a grade improvement or a timeline for one: nobody can know what a particular candidate will score, and a tutor who offers a number is describing a sales position rather than an educational one. The honest measure is movement on timed scripts, reviewed at session six.

What if no specialist is free for our exact course and time?+

We say so. Narrow combinations - a higher level language, Additional Mathematics 0606, a specific board's business paper at a peak evening hour - occasionally have nobody available, particularly in the weeks before a series. The options we will offer are a different hour with the right specialist, or a named date when one becomes free. We will not substitute a generalist and leave a family to discover the mismatch over six weeks, because for course-specific work that substitution is the whole problem.
