Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 Tutor in Sharjah

Before hiring a Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor in Sharjah, it is worth knowing that two of the most useful things you can do for this subject cost nothing at all. This page works upwards from those, through what the local market charges, to the point where paying a specialist genuinely changes a mark. It also explains the distinction that decides the invoice in English more than in any other subject: whether you are buying teaching time or marking time. Lessons run online, one to one.

Where the money goes in English, and why it is not where parents expect

English is the subject Sharjah families most often buy badly. Not because they overspend, though some do, but because the thing being purchased is unclear. In maths or chemistry an hour buys teaching: a method is explained, practised and checked. In 0500 a substantial part of the value is in marking — someone reading a 500-word composition closely against published criteria and saying exactly which of the available marks were not taken. Marking takes time outside the session, it is invisible on an invoice, and it is the first thing a cheap arrangement quietly stops doing.

This matters because of how the paper is built. Cambridge 0500 is assessed across two written papers of 80 marks each, carrying 50% of the grade apiece. Paper 1 is Reading, two hours, covering comprehension and a directed response, analysis of a writer's use of language, and a summary. Paper 2 is Directed Writing and Composition, also two hours: a directed writing task worth 40 marks, then one composition chosen from a descriptive or narrative option, also worth 40 marks, of which 24 are for content and structure and 16 for style and accuracy. Some centres enter a coursework portfolio in place of Paper 2. There is no Core or Extended tier in 0500 — every candidate sits the same papers, and the grade runs A* to G.

Two of those components respond to teaching and two respond to marking, and the budget should follow that split rather than the clock. The summary question and the language-analysis question have techniques that can be taught in a few sessions and then practised cheaply. The composition and the directed writing improve almost entirely through a redraft cycle: write, be marked precisely, rewrite the same piece, be marked again. That cycle is the expensive part, and a provider charging only for contact time is either absorbing the marking or not doing it.

The Sharjah market makes the choice wider than it looks. Published online rates run from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour at the budget end, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52, through AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor, with Unitors listing IGCSE support from AED 150. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level tutors are published at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home one-to-one visits including travel run roughly AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350. Those are market figures from the providers and rate survey named, not an IB Gram price list.

The order of this page follows the money. It begins with what costs nothing, moves to what the local market charges and why English sits where it does in that range, works out where a limited budget should go between the two papers, covers the entry decision between 0500 and 0510 that changes the budget entirely, prices the redraft cycle honestly, and ends with the checks a Sharjah parent can make for free. Lessons are delivered online, one to one, over live video; IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, which are a service we provide only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English support is bought at different points for different reasons, and the cost of each point differs sharply. These are the stages a Sharjah family is choosing between.

0500Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language

Two written papers of 80 marks each. Paper 1 Reading covers comprehension and directed response, analysis of a writer's use of language, and a summary. Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition sets a 40-mark directed task and a 40-mark composition. Some centres offer a coursework portfolio as an alternative to Paper 2. Not tiered, graded A* to G.

Almost every Cambridge candidate in Sharjah sits an English qualification, which makes this the deepest tutoring market in the emirate and therefore the one with the widest price spread. Deep supply is good news for cost and bad news for quality control, because a general English graduate and a 0500 specialist look identical on a profile.

0510Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language

A separate syllabus for students whose English is strong but not first-language level, assessed differently and with a different grade profile. The entry decision between 0500 and 0510 belongs to the school and is normally made on evidence from the student's written work rather than on family preference.

In a multilingual emirate this is the single decision with the largest effect on a tutoring budget. A student placed correctly needs targeted support; a first-language candidate who should be on the second-language syllabus will absorb money indefinitely without the mark moving.

LITERATUREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English

A separate qualification many Sharjah students take alongside 0500. The analytical reading skills overlap usefully with Paper 1, but the assessment is about set texts and sustained argument, and the marking criteria are different. Treating the two as one subject is a common and expensive error.

Where a student takes both, one specialist covering both in a single weekly hour is materially cheaper than two arrangements, and the Paper 1 analysis work transfers. Ask any provider directly whether the same tutor is comfortable with both before paying for two.

A LEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge AS and A Level English Language 9093

The sixth-form continuation for students who want to keep the subject. It raises the analytical demand considerably and introduces directed writing for specified audiences and purposes. A 0500 candidate who has been marked against criteria rather than corrected for grammar arrives with the habit that matters.

For Sharjah families with a sixth form in view, the useful 0500 spend is on the composition redraft cycle rather than on last-minute exam technique, because the redraft habit is what Year 12 depends on and the technique is not.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0500 breaks into a small number of assessed tasks, and they do not cost the same to improve. This is where a budget actually goes, ordered from the cheapest marks to recover to the dearest.

The summary question

0500 Paper 1 Reading

The cheapest marks in the syllabus to recover. It rewards selecting the relevant points from a passage and expressing them concisely in the student's own words. It is a technique, not a talent: identify, condense, avoid quotation, watch the length. Two or three sessions and some unsupervised practice usually settles it for good.

Comprehension and short-answer reading

0500 Paper 1 Reading

Short responses where marks are lost to answering a different question from the one asked, or to giving one point where two were required. Cheap to improve because the fix is reading the question stem carefully and checking the mark allocation. Rarely needs more than a session plus practice.

Writer's effects and language analysis

0500 Paper 1 Reading

The question that separates grades. It asks what the writer's choice of words achieves, not what the passage says. Students who paraphrase the content score poorly however well written their answer. Mid-cost: the technique can be taught in two or three sessions, but it needs several marked attempts before it holds under exam pressure.

Directed writing

0500 Paper 2, 40 marks

Writing to a specified form, audience and purpose from supplied material. Marks follow convention as much as quality: the form has to be recognisable, the audience addressed and the supplied material used rather than ignored. A structural fix, which makes it faster and cheaper to improve than the free composition.

Descriptive composition

0500 Paper 2, 40 marks

Twenty-four marks for content and structure, sixteen for style and accuracy. The expensive component, because it improves through redrafting rather than instruction. Students who write fluently and score in the middle are almost always losing structure marks, not accuracy marks, which is counter-intuitive and only visible in criteria-based marking.

Narrative composition

0500 Paper 2, 40 marks

The alternative composition option, marked on the same split. The recurring loss is a plot that consumes the word count without any crafted writing in it. Improvement comes from fewer events and more deliberate sentences, which is a hard thing to accept and a cheap thing to teach once accepted.

Style and accuracy, the sixteen marks

0500 Paper 2 compositions

Sentence variety, punctuation under pressure, paragraph control and vocabulary used precisely rather than decoratively. This is the part parents assume is the whole subject. It is sixteen marks out of forty, and spending the entire budget here while the structure marks leak is the most common misallocation in 0500 support.

The coursework portfolio route

0500 Component 3, where a centre offers it

Where a school enters coursework in place of Paper 2, the assessed work is produced over time under the school's supervision. Tutoring here is tightly bounded: a tutor may teach and discuss, but the writing must be the student's own, and that limit is not negotiable under the awarding body's rules.

Speaking and listening

0500 separate endorsement

Reported separately and not part of the 0500 grade itself. Worth knowing because families occasionally pay for support here believing it will move the English grade. It will not. Confirm with the school what is being entered before any money is spent on it.

Reading speed and stamina

0500 Paper 1 Reading, two hours

Not an assessed objective but a real constraint: two hours, three question types and a long passage to work from. Students who run out of time lose marks on the final question regardless of ability. Timed practice costs nothing beyond the paper it is written on and is the cheapest intervention available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy 0500 support, priced differently because the work in each is different. All run online, one to one, over live video.

Technique sessions for the reading paper

Short, bounded work on the summary question, the comprehension responses and the language-analysis question. These have teachable methods and improve quickly, which makes them the cheapest useful purchase in the subject and the right first spend for a limited budget.

  • Summary technique: identify, condense, own words, length control
  • Question-stem reading and mark-allocation checking
  • Language analysis practised on short extracts rather than whole passages
  • Timed practice to fix the two-hour pacing problem

The composition redraft cycle

Write a composition, receive it back marked against the criteria with the lost marks named, rewrite the same piece, be marked again. The expensive component, because the marking is substantial work outside the session, and the only one that reliably moves a middling composition mark.

  • Marked on the 24-and-16 split, so structure losses are visible separately
  • The same piece rewritten, not a new piece each week
  • A kept record of both drafts, so movement is a document rather than an opinion
  • Three to four full cycles before the pattern holds under timed conditions

Diagnostic session, bought alone

One session, and no commitment to more. The student brings a marked school paper and a recent composition; the tutor says where the marks are actually being lost and what the cheapest route to recovering them is. Families on a tight budget often find this is the only paid session they need.

  • Starts from the student's own marked work, not a sold assessment
  • Separates a reading problem from a writing problem, which changes everything
  • Produces a written plan the family can execute without further paid hours
  • Available as the free trial lesson, with no card required

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

The cheapest useful thing you can do for 0500 costs nothing

  • One timed composition at home, unsupported, under exam conditions
  • Three questions to the English department, all factual and quickly answered
  • Read the composition marking criteria with the student
  • Do all three before paying anyone, because they decide what to buy

Two interventions in this subject are free and both outperform a month of poorly targeted paid sessions. They are worth doing before any provider is contacted, partly because they work and partly because they tell you what you actually need to buy.

The first is a timed composition written at home. Two hours, one past-paper question, no help, no phone. Most Sharjah students have never done this, because school conditions are different and homework is untimed. What comes back answers the question nobody can answer from a report: does the student run out of time, or produce a fluent piece that lacks shape, or write carefully and accurately with nothing much happening in it. Those are three different problems with three different price tags, and confusing them is how families spend AED 800 a month on grammar for a student whose structure marks are the ones leaking.

The second is a direct question to the English department. Ask three things. Is the child entered for first-language English 0500 or second-language English 0510. Does the centre enter the coursework portfolio or Paper 2. And on the most recent composition, were the marks lost mainly in content and structure, which carries 24 marks, or in style and accuracy, which carries 16. English teachers answer that third question readily and precisely, and the answer determines what a tutor should be doing. Many families never ask it and pay for months of work aimed at the wrong half of the mark scheme.

A third free step is nearly as useful: read the published marking criteria for the composition with the student. Not the syllabus, the criteria. Seeing that nearly two-thirds of the marks are for content and structure reframes the subject for a student who believes English marks are awarded for vocabulary. That conversation costs twenty minutes and changes what the student does in the exam room.

02

Teaching time or marking time: what the fee actually covers

English is priced like other subjects and consumed differently, and that mismatch is responsible for most disappointing English arrangements in this market. An hour of maths tutoring is an hour of work. An hour of 0500 tutoring that includes a properly marked composition is an hour of contact plus thirty to forty minutes of close reading against criteria, which somebody has to absorb.

There are three ways providers handle this and they are worth distinguishing before signing anything. Some price contact time only and mark nothing, which is cheap and appropriate if the student needs reading technique rather than writing development. Some price contact time and absorb light marking, which usually means corrections and a comment rather than criteria-based assessment. Some charge for marking separately, per piece, which is transparent and often the best value for a student whose problem is purely the composition. The table below sets the three out with the question to ask each.

The practical consequence for a Sharjah family on a budget is that the cheapest route is frequently a hybrid. Buy a small number of technique sessions for the reading paper, where contact time is the thing that helps. Buy marking by the piece for the composition, where the marking is the thing that helps. That combination costs less than a weekly hour across a year and targets both halves of the paper. It requires a provider willing to sell it that way, which is itself a useful filter.

One warning about the cheapest end. At published budget rates of roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour, criteria-based composition marking is not realistically included, and a provider implying otherwise is either doing something lighter than that or not sustaining it. That is not a reason to avoid the band — for timed reading practice and summary technique it is good value — but it is a reason to be specific about what you expect back.

The Sharjah English market, cheapest to dearest

With the free steps done and the pricing model understood, the market itself becomes easy to read. English has the deepest tutoring supply of any subject in this emirate, because almost every candidate sits it, which means the price range is wider than in maths or the sciences and the quality range is wider still.

At the budget end, published online rates start at roughly AED 45 to 65 an hour at EdFlik and from about AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya. In University City the undergraduate supply makes this band particularly easy to access. It buys contact time: reading practice, summary attempts, someone to sit with a student through a past paper. For a candidate who needs pacing and technique rather than writing development, it is sound value and should not be dismissed. What it does not buy is criteria-based marking of a composition, and expecting that at this rate leads to disappointment.

The middle band, AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor with Unitors listing IGCSE support from AED 150, is where most 0500 arrangements sit and where the variation in what is delivered is widest. Two tutors at the same rate can be doing completely different work: one correcting grammar, one marking against the 24-and-16 split. Asking for a marked sample in the trial session is the only way to tell, and it costs nothing.

Above that, specialists are published at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table running to AED 450 plus for exam-year specialists; premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650, with BartyED listing that figure. In English, the honest case for the upper bands is narrower than in a technical subject: what you are buying is marking judgement, which matters enormously for a student stuck at a grade 5 or 6 and matters much less for one who needs timed reading practice. All figures here are the published market rates of the providers and survey named, not ours.

04

Why English sits where it does in this market

  • Deepest tutoring supply of any subject in the emirate, so the entry price is low
  • Hardest subject in which to tell two tutors apart from a profile
  • The real cost is marking time, which happens outside the billed hour
  • The mid-priced unspecified weekly hour is where money is most often wasted

Prices in a tutoring market are set by supply and by what the work costs the person doing it, and English has an unusual profile on both counts. Understanding it stops a family either overpaying out of anxiety or underpaying and getting nothing marked.

On supply, English is the most available subject in the emirate. Every Cambridge candidate sits an English qualification, every education graduate has studied the language, and the University City undergraduate population adds a large pool of competent, cheap, willing tutors. Deep supply pushes the entry price down, which is genuinely good for families. The problem it creates is discrimination: a tutor who is excellent at reading technique and a tutor who can mark a composition against criteria present identically on a profile and often at the same rate.

On cost of work, English runs the other way. A maths tutor finishes when the session finishes. A 0500 tutor who marks a composition properly spends real time on each piece and does so between sessions. That cost is either priced in, absorbed quietly until it stops being done, or billed separately. This is why the question about marking matters more in English than anywhere else, and why a specialist rate in this subject is buying time you never see rather than expertise you watch being used.

The result is a market where the top and the bottom are both defensible and the middle requires questions. A budget tutor who honestly sells contact time is good value. A specialist who honestly sells marking judgement is good value for the student who needs it. The arrangement to avoid is the mid-priced weekly hour where nobody has specified what happens to the student's writing, because that is where most of the wasted money in Sharjah English tutoring sits.

05

Spending a limited budget: the reading paper against the writing paper

Suppose a family in Al Nahda or Muwaileh has AED 600 a month to spend on 0500 and eight months before the papers. Where that money goes depends entirely on which paper is losing the marks, and the two answers barely overlap.

If Paper 1 Reading is the weaker side, the money goes a long way. The summary question is a technique: select the relevant points, condense them, use the student's own words, control the length. Two or three sessions plus unsupervised practice generally settles it permanently. The comprehension responses need the question stem read properly and the mark allocation checked, which is one session and a habit. The language-analysis question is harder and needs several marked attempts, but the attempts are short. A reading-side budget of AED 600 a month buys more than enough, and much of it can taper off after the first term.

If Paper 2 is the weaker side, the same budget has to be deployed differently and more carefully. Compositions improve through redrafting, each cycle needs real marking, and three to four full cycles are usually required before the pattern holds under timed conditions. At AED 600 a month that is perhaps two sessions and two marked pieces, which is a slower but genuine route. Spending the same money on four cheap contact hours with nothing marked produces almost no movement, which is the most common way a reasonable English budget is wasted in this market.

There is a third case worth naming because it is frequent: both papers are adequate and the mark is stuck in the middle because the student does not know which of the 24 structure marks and 16 accuracy marks they are losing. That is a diagnostic problem, not a volume problem, and the correct spend is one session — available here as the free trial lesson with no card required — followed by a plan the family executes themselves. Some Sharjah families should spend nothing after that, and a provider unwilling to say so is not worth the fee.

06

0500 or 0510: the entry decision that changes the whole budget

No single factor affects a Sharjah English budget as much as whether the child is on the right syllabus, and it is a question families frequently avoid asking because it feels like a judgement about the child.

Cambridge offers English as a First Language 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510 as separate qualifications with different papers, different demands and different grade profiles. The entry decision belongs to the school and is normally made from evidence in the student's written work. In a multilingual emirate where many students speak English fluently but did not acquire it first, the boundary is genuinely difficult, and schools make it with more information than a family or a tutor has.

The budget consequence is substantial in both directions. A student correctly entered for 0500 who needs composition development has a defined problem and a defined cost. A student entered for 0500 whose written English is at second-language level can absorb a weekly specialist hour for a year with the mark barely moving, because the gap is not a technique gap. Equally, a genuinely first-language student placed on 0510 may coast, and the cost there is an opportunity rather than a fee. Asking the English department directly which entry is planned, and on what evidence, is free and should happen before any arrangement starts.

What a tutor can honestly contribute is evidence rather than an opinion on placement. A marked composition against the 0500 criteria shows whether the losses are in content and structure or in the accuracy and range of the language itself, and that distinction is the one the school is weighing. Handing that marked work to the English teacher is more useful than asking either party to decide alone, and it is what we would suggest a family in this position do first.

07

What the composition redraft cycle costs to run properly

  • One cycle: timed write, criteria-based marking, rewrite the same piece, mark again
  • Three to four cycles before a middling composition mark holds higher
  • Compare providers on cost per marked cycle, not cost per hour
  • Practice pieces only: assessed coursework must be the student's own work

This is the part of 0500 that money genuinely buys, so it is worth being precise about what a cycle involves and therefore what it should cost.

One cycle is four steps. The student writes a composition under timed conditions. Someone reads it closely against the published criteria and marks it on both parts of the split, naming what cost the marks — not correcting the grammar, but identifying that the structure gave away eight of the 24 available marks because the piece had no shape beyond chronology. The student then rewrites the same piece against that feedback. And the rewrite is marked again, so the student sees the movement on an identical task. Three to four cycles is normally where a middling mark starts to hold at a higher level.

The cost is mostly in the second and fourth steps, and this is why the arrangement has to be specified rather than assumed. A provider selling a weekly contact hour at a mid-market rate may or may not be absorbing eighty minutes of marking across a month. For a Sharjah family deciding between options, the honest comparison is cost per marked cycle rather than cost per hour, and a provider that cannot quote the former is pricing something else.

Two limits belong here. The cycle works on practice compositions, not on assessed work. Where a centre enters the coursework portfolio in place of Paper 2, the writing in that folder must be the student's own, and a tutor may teach, discuss and give general feedback but may not edit it to completion or dictate it — that boundary is set by the awarding body and breaching it puts the student at risk, not the tutor. And no cycle, however well run, licenses a promise about a grade. No tutor can guarantee a particular Cambridge result, and the honest evidence is the mark gap between a first draft and a rewrite of the same piece.

08

In-home English in Sharjah, and what the travel line buys

In-home tutoring is a real market here and families are right to ask what it costs. Published in-home one-to-one rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent tutors advertising AED 200 to 500. Monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits are advertised in this market. Set against a qualified online rate of AED 150 to 300, the gap is largely logistics.

For English specifically, the trade is sharper than in other subjects, and the reason is where the value sits. A physically present tutor helps a student who will not otherwise sit down and write, which is a genuine and common problem at this age. But the component that moves a 0500 grade is the marking, and marking happens between sessions wherever the tutor is. Paying a travel premium does not improve the marking; it improves attendance. Families should decide which of those two they are buying.

The Sharjah timing arithmetic makes this concrete. A household in Al Khan or Al Nahda whose children attend a Dubai campus often sees the bus arrive after 16:30. An in-home session booked for 17:00 starts late because the tutor is in the same traffic, and the hour is billed from 17:00. In the outlying communities — Tilal City, Sharjah Garden City, and the east-coast towns of Kalba and Khor Fakkan — the quotes rise further and the available pool narrows to whoever will make the drive, which for a subject where marking judgement is the product is the wrong selection criterion.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide only in India, and no tutor will be sent to a Sharjah address. What a family gets instead is the specialist rather than the nearest available English graduate, and a marked composition returned annotated on screen that the student keeps and can show the school.

Four free checks before any payment

Four things a Sharjah parent can verify independently, none of which costs anything, and all of which are worth more than a testimonial page.

First, the permit position. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is administered through MoHRE, whose service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing. It is granted free of charge for two years, with a two-working-day completion time, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; the ministry has published no fine schedule, so any page naming an amount has invented it. Because the permit is free, no quote should contain a licensing charge.

Second, the claims. Ask whether the provider asserts approval, accreditation or licensing from a regulator or an awarding body. The correct answer is that it does not. Private education in Sharjah is regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods for private schools — a school-level remit that confers nothing on a tutoring provider. IB Gram holds no approval from SPEA, from the Ministry of Education or from Cambridge, and a provider claiming otherwise is making the most dangerous claim available in this market.

Third, what is included. Get the session length in writing, and get a direct answer on whether written work is marked, how it is marked, and how quickly it comes back. In English this single question separates most good arrangements from most disappointing ones, and it is free to ask.

Fourth, the materials position. Cambridge syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are the awarding body's copyright material, distributed through schools and published on the official site. A tutor references them and works from the school's copies. A provider offering to supply a bundle as a download, or offering to produce coursework, has told you what it is. On the other side of the ledger, a free trial lesson should have its conditions stated plainly on the same screen as the word free — ours is one hour, online, with no card required and no obligation.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Sharjah

What English support costs and what is available locally varies across the emirate, mostly because of travel and the size of the local tutoring pool. These are the communities this page is written for.

Al Majaz and Al Qasba

Central Sharjah, where in-home English tutoring is most actively advertised and quoted rates are most visible. Competition keeps prices comparable here, which makes it the easiest part of the emirate in which to shop on price rather than availability.

Al Nahda

Dense apartment living on the Dubai boundary with many children at Dubai campuses. Supply is plentiful but heavily weighted to the budget end of the market, so the useful question here is what the fee includes rather than what it is.

Muwaileh

Several Cambridge centres and a large Year 10 and 11 population. The local pattern is a confident speaker with a middling composition mark, which is a structure problem and the one most likely to be mispriced as a grammar problem.

University City and Al Nouf

Proximity to the higher-education cluster makes cheap undergraduate tutoring easy to find for English specifically. That genuinely works for timed reading practice and summary technique; it does not reliably work for criteria-based composition marking.

Al Khan and Al Taawun

Coastal and committed to the Dubai commute, so an in-home session booked at 17:00 often starts late and is still billed in full. For a subject where the value sits partly in marking done outside the session, that lost time is expensive.

Tilal City and Sharjah Garden City

Outlying villa communities where in-home quotes rise fastest because a tutor prices the drive as well as the hour. Online delivery removes that line from the invoice without changing what happens to a marked composition.

Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Dibba Al Hisn

East-coast communities under SPEA with little local English tutoring supply at specialist level. Working over live video is the only arrangement here where a weekly redraft cycle actually runs for a full term.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sharjah

Sharjah Cambridge and British-curriculum campuses

Students we support in Sharjah attend Cambridge and British-curriculum schools across the emirate. Each campus decides whether it enters the coursework portfolio or Paper 2, and whether an individual student is entered for first-language or second-language English — both decisions change what support is worth paying for.

  • Wesgreen International School
  • Sharjah English School
  • International School of Creative Science, Muwaileh
  • Australian International School, Sharjah
  • Scholars International Academy
  • Emirates National School, Sharjah

Dubai campuses attended from Al Nahda and Al Khan

Many Sharjah households run the IGCSE years at a Dubai school, which places the campus under KHDA rather than SPEA and brings a different set of mandatory-subject requirements into the same weekly evenings an English redraft has to fit into.

  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • GEMS Our Own English High School, Dubai
  • Deira International School
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud

Schools are named only as context for the local education ecosystem; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, partnership with or endorsement from any school, group, regulator or awarding body named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Write one timed composition at home first

Two hours, one past-paper question, unsupported. It costs nothing and it answers the question a report cannot: is the problem pacing, shape or sentence craft. Bring that piece to any conversation with a provider, because it converts a vague worry into a specific and priceable problem.

  2. 02

Ask the English department three factual questions

First-language 0500 or second-language 0510. Coursework portfolio or Paper 2. And whether the recent composition losses sat in the 24 content and structure marks or the 16 style and accuracy marks. All three are free, all three are answered quickly, and all three change what is worth buying.

  3. 03

Use the free trial lesson as the diagnostic

One hour, online, no card required, no obligation. Bring the timed composition and the most recent marked school paper. A specialist will say where the marks are going and what the cheapest route to recovering them is, in writing. Some families need no paid session after this, and we will say so when that is the case.

  4. 04

Decide the model, then the figure

Choose between technique sessions for the reading paper, marked redraft cycles for the composition, or a hybrid of both. Then fix the monthly number of sessions and marked pieces so the cost is known. Compare providers on cost per marked cycle rather than cost per hour, because in English those are different things.

  5. 05

Review on paired drafts at week eight

Compare a first draft and a rewrite of the same composition, both marked, eight weeks in. If the gap on the 24-and-16 split is real, the arrangement is working. If it is flat across three cycles, change the arrangement rather than buying more hours of the same thing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The free options are listed before the paid ones

A timed composition at home, three questions to the English department and twenty minutes with the published criteria will tell a Sharjah family more than a first month of poorly aimed sessions. All three are free, and we would rather a family did them first and bought less than bought more and learned nothing.

Marking is specified, not assumed

Written work is marked against the published criteria on both parts of the composition split, with the lost marks named rather than the grammar corrected. What arrives, and how quickly, is agreed before the first paid session, because an unspecified marking promise is the commonest weakness in English arrangements at every price.

Every AED figure is attributed

The bands on this page come from EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase, BartyED and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, each named next to its figure. None of them is an IB Gram price. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all.

A diagnostic session can be the only session

Some students need a plan rather than a programme: one hour to identify where the 24 structure marks and 16 accuracy marks are going, then a term of unsupervised practice. That is available as the free trial lesson, and we will tell a family when it is the right answer rather than selling a weekly hour.

Clear limits on assessed work

Where a centre enters the coursework portfolio, the writing in that folder is the student's own. A tutor teaches, discusses and gives feedback; nobody here edits a folder to completion or dictates it. No Cambridge syllabus, past paper or mark scheme is supplied as a download either — those belong to the awarding body and the school already holds them.

Scheduling that fits a Sharjah evening

One protected hour in Gulf Standard Time, late enough to survive a bus arriving after 16:30 from a Dubai campus and an evening that already contains Arabic and Islamic education homework. Sessions can move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan. A slot that holds for a term is what makes a redraft cycle possible at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What is the cheapest thing we can do for 0500 that actually helps?+

Have the student write one composition at home under timed conditions, two hours, unsupported, from a past paper. It costs nothing and it distinguishes three problems that cost very different amounts to fix: running out of time, writing fluently without shape, or writing carefully with nothing happening in the piece. Then ask the English department whether the recent composition losses sat in the 24 content and structure marks or the 16 style and accuracy marks. Those two free steps decide what is worth buying, and plenty of Sharjah families find they need far less paid support than they assumed.

Are we paying for teaching time or for marking time in an English session?+

Both, in proportions that vary widely and are rarely stated. An hour that includes a properly marked composition involves the session plus thirty to forty minutes of close reading against the published criteria, done between sessions. Some providers price contact time only and mark nothing. Some absorb light marking, which usually means corrections rather than criteria-based assessment. Some charge per marked piece, which is the most transparent arrangement. Ask which model applies before paying, because in 0500 the marking is what moves the composition mark and it is the first thing a cheap plan stops doing.

What does an English tutor charge an hour in the Sharjah market?+

The published range is wide because supply is deep. Budget online rates start at roughly AED 45 to 65 an hour at EdFlik and from about AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya. Qualified subject tutors working online are published at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE support from AED 150. Specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650 at BartyED. In-home visits run roughly AED 180 to 500 including travel. Those are the providers' and rate survey's own figures, not an IB Gram price list.

Is marking a composition worth paying for separately?+

For a student stuck in the middle of the range, it is often the best value purchase in the subject. A composition carries 40 marks split 24 for content and structure and 16 for style and accuracy, and a middling mark is usually leaking from the first of those rather than the second. Criteria-based marking identifies which, and a student who has seen that distinction on their own writing changes what they do. Buying marking by the piece also keeps the cost visible, which an hourly rate with unspecified marking does not. Compare providers on cost per marked cycle rather than cost per hour.

Why is English tutoring often cheaper than maths or physics in this emirate?+

Because supply is much deeper. Every Cambridge candidate in Sharjah sits an English qualification, every education graduate has studied the language, and the University City undergraduate population adds a large, willing, inexpensive pool. That pushes the entry price down, which is genuinely good for families. The cost is that English is the hardest subject in which to tell two tutors apart from a profile: someone excellent at reading technique and someone who can mark a composition against criteria look identical and often charge the same. Asking for a marked sample in the trial session is the only reliable filter.

Should we spend the budget on the reading paper or the writing paper?+

On whichever is losing the marks, and the two cost very different amounts. The reading paper responds to technique: the summary question settles in two or three sessions plus practice, comprehension responses improve once the question stem and mark allocation are read properly, and language analysis needs several short marked attempts. A modest budget goes a long way there and can taper after a term. The writing paper improves through marked redraft cycles, each of which needs real marking time, so the same money buys fewer but heavier interventions. Spending writing-paper money on reading-paper methods is the common error.

Is a cheaper tutor who is not an English specialist a false economy for 0500?+

Not always, and it depends on the task. For timed reading practice, summary attempts, pacing and general comprehension work, a capable non-specialist at the budget band is reasonable value and many Sharjah families use exactly that. Where it fails is the composition. Marking 40 marks split 24 and 16 requires familiarity with the published criteria, and without it the feedback defaults to grammar correction, which addresses the smaller half of the mark scheme. If the composition mark is the problem, the cheap option will absorb months without moving it.

How many compositions does a 0500 candidate need marked, and what does that cost?+

Three to four full redraft cycles is where a middling mark usually starts to hold higher, and a cycle is four steps: a timed write, criteria-based marking, a rewrite of the same piece, and a second marking. Spread across a term that is a manageable commitment, and it is the part of the subject that money genuinely improves. The cost depends on the provider's model, which is why the comparison to make is cost per marked cycle rather than cost per hour. A provider who cannot quote per cycle is pricing contact time and calling it something else.

Does moving from 0500 to 0510 reduce what we need to spend?+

It can change the problem entirely, but it is not a family decision. English as a Second Language 0510 is a separate Cambridge qualification with different papers and demands, and the entry choice belongs to the school, normally made on evidence from the student's written work. The budget consequence is real in both directions: a first-language candidate whose written English is at second-language level can absorb a weekly specialist hour for a year without the mark moving. What a tutor can contribute is a composition marked against the 0500 criteria, which shows the school whether the losses are structural or linguistic.

Can we pay for a single diagnostic session and nothing more?+

Yes, and for some students that is the right purchase. One hour with the student's own timed composition and most recent marked school paper is usually enough for a specialist to say where the marks are going and what the cheapest route to recovering them is, in writing. The family then executes the plan without further paid hours. That session is available here as the free trial lesson, one hour, online, with no card required and no obligation. A provider who will not tell you when you need nothing further is not worth the fee.

Does a small group bring the cost of English support down?+

For the reading paper, often yes. Summary technique, comprehension questioning and timed practice work reasonably with two to four students, and the per-student rate falls meaningfully. For the composition, it rarely works, because the component improves through individual marking of individual writing and a group session cannot deliver that. The practical compromise some Sharjah families reach is group work for reading technique and individually marked pieces for the composition, which keeps the total down without hollowing out the part that actually moves the mark.

What does an in-home English tutor in Sharjah add to the hourly figure?+

Published in-home one-to-one rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online hour. The premium is largely movement. For English there is a specific reason to think hard about it: the component that moves the grade is the marking, and marking happens between sessions wherever the tutor is. A travel premium buys attendance, not better marking. In Al Khan or Al Nahda it also buys a late start, because a session booked for 17:00 in Dubai-bound traffic frequently begins at 17:25 and is billed from 17:00.

Are English sessions priced per sixty minutes or per piece of work?+

Both conventions exist in this market, which makes advertised rates hard to compare. A session may be 45, 50, 60 or 90 minutes, and a monthly package quoting a number of sessions says nothing until the length is stated. Separately, marking may be inside the hourly fee, charged per piece, or absent. Before comparing two quotes, get the session length and the marking arrangement in writing and convert both to a cost per sixty minutes and a cost per marked cycle. This is the single most common reason a cheaper-looking English package turns out to be dearer.

Our budget is AED 500 a month. What is the best use of it for 0500?+

Start with the free steps, because they change the answer. If the reading paper is the weak side, AED 500 a month buys enough technique work to settle the summary question and the comprehension responses within a term, after which the spend can taper. If the composition is the weak side, the same money is better spent on fewer sessions with marked redraft cycles than on more contact hours with nothing marked. If both papers are adequate and the mark is simply stuck, spend nothing beyond one diagnostic session and execute the plan at home. That is a genuine recommendation, not a modest one.

Does the coursework portfolio route cost less to support than sitting Paper 2?+

It usually costs less in paid hours, for a reason families should understand before treating it as a saving. Where a centre enters the coursework portfolio in place of Paper 2, the assessed writing is produced over time under the school's supervision and must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach technique, discuss approaches and give general feedback, but may not edit a folder to completion or dictate it — that limit is set by the awarding body, and breaching it puts the student at risk. So the legitimate support is narrower, and therefore cheaper, than preparation for a timed paper.

Does paying for English tutoring help with UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Tutoring is not part of the equivalency process and nothing here should suggest it is required for it. The British-track rule asks for five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade; Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. English is ordinarily one of the five a candidate presents, so the grade matters. Equivalency itself is administered by the Ministry, and the requirements should be verified on moe.gov.ae rather than taken from any tutoring page.
