IB DP Biology HL Tutor in Sharjah

Judge an IB DP Biology HL tutor in Sharjah on what comes back marked, not on what is promised in the first conversation. Every session here produces something readable: a timed script with the mark scheme logic shown, a dated comment on the student's own investigation draft, and one line naming the thing that changed. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a family in Al Qasimia or Al Zahia is choosing a Higher Level biology specialist rather than the nearest available science graduate.

  • Timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions returned marked, with mark scheme logic shown
  • A dated draft log on the investigation: four drafts, each with a stated purpose
  • A written session note every week naming the topic or criterion that moved
  • Six-week review points where you decide whether the evidence justifies continuing

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

What a Sharjah parent can actually check, six weeks in

Biology is the Diploma subject where it is easiest to feel productive and hardest to prove progress. The content is enormous, the vocabulary is specialised, and a student who has read the chapter and highlighted it genuinely feels better prepared. Then a test comes back at 4. The weekly tutoring hour starts, the student reports that the sessions are useful, the next test comes back at 4, and nobody can say what has gone wrong, because nothing in the arrangement produces evidence.

This page is built around the opposite arrangement. The question we think a Sharjah parent should be able to answer after six weeks is not whether your child likes the tutor. It is narrower: what did a marked script say in week one, what does a marked script say now, and which specific thing accounts for the difference. That is answerable only if marked work exists, dated, at both ends. So the sessions here are designed around producing it rather than around covering content and hoping.

In practice that means three artefacts. The first is the timed script. Each session ends with questions sat under time, returned marked before the next lesson, with the mark scheme logic written on the page rather than a score at the top. The second is the draft log on the scientific investigation: four drafts, each with a stated purpose, each comment dated and keyed to a criterion, so the movement between drafts is visible rather than remembered. The third is a one-line weekly note naming the topic or the criterion that moved - the dullest of the three and the most useful, because it is the one that reveals a plateau.

A plateau is the thing this arrangement is designed to catch early. Six weeks of pleasant sessions with no measurable change is a real outcome, and it usually means one of three things: the match is wrong, the diagnosis was wrong, or the student is not doing the between-session work. All three are fixable, and all three are invisible without a record. We would rather hand you the evidence that a tutor is not working than keep a comfortable arrangement going for a term.

The Sharjah specifics sit on top of that. Many of our Diploma biology students attend SPEA-regulated campuses inside the emirate; many others commute across the Dubai boundary from Al Nahda and Al Qasimia, which changes the school calendar and the realistic session time. Lessons are delivered online over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are an India-only service - and for Higher Level biology that means the specialist pool is national rather than whatever is within a twenty-minute drive of your building.

At a glance

  • Every session produces a marked artefact that outlives the conversation
  • Investigation comments are dated and quote the criterion they refer to
  • A one-line weekly note makes a plateau visible within a month
  • Review points at six weeks, after the mock, and before the examination session
  • Confirm all weightings, word limits and criteria wording against your cohort's biology subject guide
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level biology is reached from two directions in Sharjah - through the Middle Years Programme or through an IGCSE science - and the evidence a student arrives with differs sharply between them.

DPAges 16-19 - DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Biology

The two-year course at Higher or Standard Level, running 240 taught hours at Higher Level against 180 at Standard Level, with around forty hours of practical work. Assessment combines written papers with the scientific investigation, a single internally assessed report capped at 3,000 words and marked against four criteria. The written papers reward precise terminology, data interpretation and structured extended responses in roughly equal measure.

In Sharjah the evidence a student brings to a first session varies by campus. Some schools return marked papers with mark scheme annotations; others return a percentage and a comment. Where the school provides the first kind, we build on it rather than duplicating it. Where it provides the second, the first fortnight is spent generating a marked baseline of our own, because without one there is nothing to measure the term against.

MYPAges 11-16 - MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme sciences

Assessed against four criteria that reward inquiry design, scientific communication and reflection. Students arrive in DP1 from the MYP with strong investigation instincts and often with less practice at the dense, terminology-exact short answers the Diploma papers want. The first marked Diploma script usually shows this clearly: good structure, insufficient precision.

Several Sharjah campuses run the MYP directly into the Diploma, and those students can usually show two years of criterion-referenced feedback. That history is useful evidence and we ask for it. A student joining DP1 in Sharjah from an IGCSE route has no criterion-referenced record at all, which makes an early baseline script more important rather than less.

IGCSEAges 14-16 - Years 10 and 11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE Biology

Cambridge IGCSE Biology carries syllabus code 0610 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology is 4BI1. Both cover cell biology, transport, respiration, genetics and ecology, and both reward recall more heavily than the Diploma does. Neither requires error bars to be interpreted or a statistical test to be discussed, which is why data-handling questions ambush DP1 students who scored A grades at IGCSE.

The Sharjah IGCSE cohort is large, and the biology bridge into DP1 is specific rather than general: statistical reasoning, error bars, the habit of quoting data when describing a trend, and the shift from naming to explaining. Six to eight sessions in the summer before DP1 close most of it, and they produce a marked baseline that the whole of DP1 can then be measured against.

COREAges 16-19

The Diploma core alongside biology

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS run alongside the six subjects. Biology students write a disproportionate share of Extended Essays, because the subject feels approachable, and a good number of those essays stall on method feasibility. The core deadlines also compete directly with the biology investigation for the same weeks of DP2.

In a Sharjah DP2 autumn term the internal deadline calendar is the real constraint on a biology plan. Investigation deadlines, Extended Essay drafts and mock examinations tend to land within a few weeks of each other, and the schedule differs between SPEA-regulated campuses and the Dubai schools Sharjah families commute to. We ask for the school's internal deadline list before setting the term plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level biology rarely arrives alone. These are the courses our Sharjah biology students most often carry alongside it, and the note says what each one does to the evidence picture.

Biology

HL and SL

The subject on this page. Higher Level losses concentrate in extended responses, genetics problems and data interpretation rather than in recall. A marked Standard Level script shows a different pattern, mostly terminology and incomplete explanations, so the two levels need separate plans.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The usual second science in a medicine-facing choice. Chemistry rewards exact numerical work; biology rewards precise terminology and structured argument. Students who carry both often import chemistry brevity into biology extended responses and lose marks for insufficient development.

Psychology

HL and SL

Shares the research-methods vocabulary with biology and the evaluation habit that biology extended responses reward. Students taking both get a real advantage on questions about experimental design, provided they keep the two sets of terminology apart.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Overlaps heavily with human physiology. The overlap is genuine and the assessment style is not: a student who revises physiology once for both subjects often writes a sports science answer in a biology paper and loses the detail marks.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Covers ecology, energy flow and biodiversity from a systems perspective. Biology students find it familiar and under-answer it, because a systems question wants a different kind of response from a biology ecology question.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics content supports the data-handling side of biology directly: correlation, significance, sampling. A biology student who is secure on this course reads error bars and test results with far less hesitation in a Paper 2 data question.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

More algebraic and less statistical. It supports the quantitative parts of biology adequately but leaves the statistical reasoning to be taught in the biology sessions, which is worth knowing when planning hours across both subjects.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The extended response in biology is a writing task with a science mark scheme. Students whose English A work is strong usually structure biology essays well; students who struggle there tend to lose biology marks for organisation rather than for content.

Extended Essay in biology

Core

A popular and risky choice. Biology essays need a workable method and often primary data, and the ones that stall do so because the question could not be answered with available organisms, equipment or time. The feasibility conversation belongs in DP1.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Biology supplies some of the strongest Theory of Knowledge examples available - models, classification, the status of evidence from a single study - and students rarely use them, because they treat the course as unrelated to their sciences.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All three formats below are built to leave a record behind. The difference between them is how often the record is produced and what it is meant to prove.

Weekly one-to-one with a marked script every week

A fixed weekly hour, with timed questions sat in or immediately after the session and returned marked before the next one. The marking shows mark scheme logic rather than a total, and a one-line note names the topic or criterion that moved. Over a term this produces a dated sequence of scripts that answers the only question that matters: is the thing we identified in week one still costing marks.

  • A dated marked script every week, kept in one place
  • Mark scheme logic written on the page, not a percentage
  • A one-line weekly note naming what moved
  • Six-week review where you decide whether to continue

Investigation draft log alongside the school supervisor

A short block of sessions across the investigation window, structured as four drafts with distinct purposes: method feasibility, data adequacy, conclusion support, and evaluation depth. Each comment is dated and quotes the criterion it refers to, so the movement between drafts is documented. The school supervisor signs the work and their guidance takes precedence; this runs behind that, not around it.

  • Four drafts, each with a stated purpose rather than a general review
  • Comments dated and keyed to the criterion
  • Method feasibility tested before any data is collected
  • The student types every word of the report

Whole-paper clinic in the final stretch

Two or three sessions a week in the weeks before the examination session, built from whole papers sat under time and then dissected. At that stage the evidence changes character: the useful record is not a topic list but a timing log showing minutes spent per question against marks available. That log is what the triage decisions are made from.

  • Whole papers under time, then reviewed question by question
  • Minutes per question logged against marks available
  • A short written triage list: what to revise, what to leave
  • Sessions stop when the examinations start

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

A marked script tells you things a school report cannot

  • A baseline timed script in the first fortnight, marked against the published scheme
  • Failure modes named with a mark cost attached to each
  • The same failure modes retested at six weeks
  • Scripts kept dated in one place and shareable with the school

A school report compresses a term into a grade and two sentences. It is written by a teacher carrying twenty-five students, and it is accurate at the level of resolution it was designed for. It cannot tell you that your child is losing four marks a paper on command terms, or that their genetics problems are right but their extended responses are unstructured, or that they are answering biology questions in sports science vocabulary. A marked script tells you all three, because the marks are lost in visible places.

This is why the first fortnight with a new Higher Level biology student produces a baseline rather than a lesson plan. The student sits a short timed set under conditions, and the tutor marks it against the published mark scheme and writes the reasoning on the page. The output is a short list of named failure modes with a mark cost attached to each. Not a general impression that the student needs to work on data questions, but a note that in this script, data questions lost six marks and extended responses lost nine, and the nine are the cheaper nine to recover.

The second thing the baseline does is make the rest of the term falsifiable. Six weeks later the same failure modes get retested, and one of three things is true: they have closed, they have narrowed, or they have not moved. The third outcome is the valuable one, because it arrives early enough to change something. A tutoring arrangement with no baseline cannot produce that finding at all, which is why unproductive arrangements in this market tend to run for a full term before anyone notices.

We keep the scripts in one place and dated, and we are happy for a school's biology department to read them. Nothing in the record is written for the parent's comfort. A plateau written down plainly is more use to you than a reassuring message after a lesson, and in our experience Sharjah parents who have paid for a term of tutoring that produced nothing measurable are the ones who ask for this arrangement first.

02

Reading a marked biology paper, question type by question type

Higher Level biology papers assess several distinguishable skills, and a marked script shows which of them is leaking marks. Multiple-choice questions test recognition and the ability to eliminate under time. Data-based questions test whether a student can read an unfamiliar graph or table, describe a trend while quoting the data, and reason about error bars and significance. Short-answer questions test precision of terminology. Extended responses test structured biological argument with named examples. These fail independently of one another.

The most common pattern we see in a Sharjah DP1 script is strong multiple choice, acceptable short answers, and a collapse in the data and extended-response sections. That pattern is diagnostic: it means the content is largely in place and the examinable skills around it are not. It also means the recoverable marks are concentrated and cheap, because describing a trend with data quoted and structuring an extended response are both trainable in weeks rather than months.

The opposite pattern - weak multiple choice with reasonable extended responses - points at content gaps rather than technique, and needs a different term plan: topic-by-topic repair with retrieval practice between sessions, and no point at all in drilling essay structure yet. Running the wrong plan is the most expensive mistake available in Diploma biology tutoring, and it is almost always caused by nobody having looked at a marked script before deciding.

The table below sets out what each question type rewards, what a script reveals when that type goes wrong, and the drill we use. Component names, section structures and weightings should be confirmed against your own cohort's biology subject guide through the school's science department, because these details are revised between cohorts.

BIOLOGY QUESTION TYPES: WHAT THE MARK SCHEME REWARDS AND WHAT A SCRIPT REVEALS
Question typeWhat the mark scheme rewardsWhat a weak script looks likeThe drill that moves it
Multiple choiceRecognition and elimination under time, no calculatorLast five answered in ninety seconds, several guessedTimed sets of twenty, reviewed for why each distractor existed

Extended responseStructured argument, named examples, development of each pointA long paragraph of accurate but undeveloped statementsPlan-then-write, with the plan marked separately from the prose
Genetics and quantitative questionsCorrect working shown, not just the final answerRight answer, no working, method marks lost when it is wrongWritten method chains: given, wanted, route
Command term accuracy, all papersAnswer shape matched to the term usedEverything written as an explanation, time lost on short questionsA term-by-term audit of one marked past paper
03

The command term audit, run on one marked paper

Of all the evidence exercises we run, the command term audit changes the most marks for the least effort. It takes one marked paper and one session. Every question is tagged with its command term, and then each answer is judged against what that term demanded rather than against whether the biology was correct. The output is a count: how many marks were lost on questions where the biology was right and the answer shape was wrong.

In Higher Level biology that count is usually between six and twelve marks a paper, and it is almost entirely recoverable. The recurring errors are consistent. State and outline attract a full explanation, which wastes minutes that the extended response then lacks. Explain attracts a description, so the causal chain is missing and half the marks go. Distinguish attracts two separate descriptions rather than a stated difference. Suggest, which signals that the examiner expects reasoning about unfamiliar material, attracts a blank because the student decided they had not been taught it.

Once the count exists, the fix is a habit rather than a course of study. The student underlines the command term before writing anything, and writes to its shape. We rehearse it on short question sets for a fortnight, then re-audit a fresh marked paper and compare the counts. That before-and-after pair is some of the clearest evidence of movement this subject produces, and it is readable by a parent who has never studied biology.

The audit also tends to settle an argument that runs in a lot of households. A student who insists they knew the material is frequently correct, and the marked paper proves it. That changes the conversation at home from effort to method, which is both more accurate and considerably more productive.

COMMAND TERM AUDIT: THE SIX TERMS THAT COST SHARJAH BIOLOGY STUDENTS MOST
Command termWhat it demandsThe answer that loses the markMarks typically recovered
StateA bare fact, no justificationA full explanation that eats three minutesTime rather than marks, then marks on the long questions
OutlineA brief account of the main pointsEither one word or a full essayOne to two marks per occurrence
ExplainA causal chain, each link statedA description of what happens, with no becauseTwo to four marks per occurrence
DistinguishA stated difference, both sides in one sentenceTwo separate descriptions left for the examiner to compareOne to two marks per occurrence
SuggestReasoning about unfamiliar material, credit for a sensible argumentA blank, on the assumption it was not taughtTwo to three marks, often the difference between grades
EvaluateJudgement supported on both sides, then a conclusionA list of advantages with no judgement reachedTwo to four marks per occurrence
04

A term-by-term ledger: what should have changed, and by when

Evidence is only useful if there is an expectation to compare it against. Without one, any result can be narrated as progress. So we set out, at the start of a block, what should have changed by which week, and we write it down where you can see it. The expectations are deliberately modest and specific, because specific modest claims can be checked and large vague ones cannot.

The pattern that holds for most Higher Level biology students runs roughly like this. In the first fortnight, a baseline script and a named list of failure modes. By week four, the command term count should have fallen measurably on a fresh paper. By week six, data-based questions should show trends described with figures quoted - a change visible on the page, whether or not the mark has moved yet. By week ten, extended responses should be planned before being written, and the structure marks should be arriving. Grade movement, where it comes, usually becomes visible between weeks eight and fourteen rather than earlier, and anyone promising it sooner is describing luck.

The ledger matters most when it is not met. If the command term count has not fallen by week four, the problem is not biology content and more biology content will not fix it. Either the habit is not being practised between sessions, or the tutor is teaching rather than drilling, or the student does not yet believe the audit. Each of those has a different remedy and all of them are cheaper to apply in week four than in week twelve.

Two Sharjah-specific adjustments apply to the timeline. A student who commutes into a Dubai campus loses genuine working time in the car, and the ledger should be set against their available hours rather than a notional evening. And a block that runs across Ramadan should expect a flatter month, with post-Iftar sessions and lighter between-session work, rather than treating the dip as a failure of the plan.

05

The investigation draft log: four drafts, four jobs

The scientific investigation is written months before the papers are sat, counts for a fifth of the grade, and is the single largest piece of evidence a biology student produces during the Diploma. It is also where feedback most often turns into something vaguer than feedback. A student sends a draft, receives a page of comments on everything at once, changes a few sentences, and sends it again. Four rounds of that produce a tidier document and no movement against the criteria.

We structure it as four drafts with four jobs. The first draft is about method feasibility only, and it happens before data collection: can this question be answered with the organisms, equipment and time actually available, and will the dependent variable produce a range rather than two values. Comments on writing quality at this stage are a distraction. The second draft is about data adequacy: enough points, enough repeats, uncertainty recorded, processing appropriate. The third is about whether the conclusion is supported by the data in front of it, which is where most reports quietly overreach. The fourth is the evaluation, which is where biology investigations most often fall short.

Each comment is dated and quotes the criterion it belongs to, so the log shows what changed between drafts and what did not. That record is useful to the student, and it is the thing that keeps the boundary visible: the comments name gaps, and the student decides what to do about them. No part of the report is authored by the tutor, no sentences are supplied for pasting, and no section is rewritten. The student types every word.

The school supervisor remains the authority throughout. Their internal deadlines govern the schedule, their reading of the criteria governs the interpretation, and where ours differs we say so to the student and defer. Biology investigations involving organisms also carry ethical constraints set by the school, which is a conversation that belongs with the supervisor before a method is settled rather than after.

06

Where the Higher Level biology content actually sits

Evidence-led tutoring still needs content teaching, and it is worth being concrete about where the Higher Level material concentrates. The course is organised into broad themes covering unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, each carrying additional content for Higher Level candidates only. As in chemistry, the additional sixty hours are not spread evenly: they cluster in the molecular and quantitative parts of the course and in the detail of physiological systems.

In practice the HL-only material produces a recognisable set of marked-script failures. Questions on gene expression and regulation, on the detail of nerve and muscle function, on plant transport and on quantitative ecology are the ones where a student with Standard Level depth writes a plausible answer that scores one mark out of four. The content is learnable; what makes it expensive is that these questions often sit at the end of long questions, so they are also where timing pressure is worst.

The sequence we use is dull and effective. Identify the HL-only topics costing marks on the baseline script. Teach each one, then test it cold two weeks later rather than immediately, because immediate retesting measures short-term recall and nothing else. Retest again at six weeks. A topic that survives both delayed tests is secure; one that passes immediately and fails at two weeks was never learned, and the weekly note records that distinction honestly.

The theme names, content boundaries and hour allocations above should be checked against the biology subject guide for your own child's cohort. Guides are revised, and the version your school's science department holds is the one that governs the examination your child will sit.

07

Keeping an evidence trail across the Sharjah school week

  • Ask the school for the internal deadline calendar before setting a term plan
  • Place timed work where the student can actually concentrate, not where the diary is empty
  • Set the Ramadan ledger lower in advance rather than recording a false plateau
  • Expect online delivery to be the only workable route to a Higher Level specialist on the east coast

Private schools in Sharjah sit under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. The practical consequence for a biology plan is that the internal calendar - term dates, mock windows, internal assessment deadlines - is set within that framework, and it differs from the calendar at a Dubai campus under KHDA. Since a large share of Sharjah Diploma students attend school in Dubai, the two calendars have to be handled as separate cases.

The journey home is the other variable, and it has a direct effect on the evidence trail rather than only on convenience. A timed script requires a student who can concentrate for forty minutes. A student who reached Al Taawun at a quarter past six after a slow crossing from Al Qusais cannot produce useful timed work at half past six, and pretending otherwise contaminates the record. For commuting families we put the timed element at the start of the following session instead, or shift the slot later and shorten it.

Ramadan reorganises the month. School hours shorten, afternoon concentration drops and families want the evening protected. Our Sharjah Diploma students typically move to post-Iftar sessions or a weekend-weighted pattern, and the ledger for that month is set lower deliberately. In a DP2 year the month frequently lands near an internal deadline or a mock, so the shift is planned in advance rather than improvised in the first week.

Scarcity is the final Sharjah constraint and the reason the delivery model is what it is. Higher Level biology specialists are spread thinly across the emirates, and a specialist reachable in person from Khor Fakkan inside a school evening does not exist in practice. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service. For this subject at this level, the model is what makes a level-matched match possible at all.

08

What the evidence trail must never be used to hide

A documented process can be used to launder a dishonest one, so the boundaries need stating as plainly as the method. The investigation must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach the biology, explain what a criterion asks for, test whether a method is feasible, challenge a conclusion that the data cannot support, and point at a paragraph and say that it does not yet answer the research question. A tutor may not author any part of the report, supply sentences for insertion, rewrite a section, or hand over a method for the student to adopt as their own.

The draft log makes that boundary easier to hold rather than harder, because it records who wrote what and when. A report that improves between drafts in ways the comments can account for is a student learning. A report that changes character overnight is a different thing, and a documented sequence of drafts is exactly what makes the difference visible - to us, and to a school that asks.

Two related boundaries. We do not supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables as downloads; those are the boards' material, and we reference the official source instead of reproducing it. And we do not describe tutors as examiners for any board unless that status can be evidenced, because in this market examiner status is routinely used to imply access to marking and boundaries that nobody has.

The last point is about claims. We do not publish satisfaction percentages, average score improvements or a count of students taught, because we could not show you the underlying data, the sample or the method. What we can show you is one student's dated scripts and the note that says what moved. That is a smaller claim than the ones this market usually makes, and it is the only one we can put in your hands.

Where we tutor

Sharjah neighbourhoods our Higher Level biology students write from

The evidence trail is easier to keep in some parts of Sharjah than others, because the length of the journey home decides whether a student arrives at a session able to sit a timed paper or only able to listen. These are the areas our Diploma biology students live in.

Al Qasimia

Older, central and close to several long-established campuses. Short journeys mean a late-afternoon slot is realistic, which is what makes a timed script at the start of a session possible rather than aspirational.

Al Zahia

Newer housing feeding the Muwaileh and University City schools. Biology requests here cluster in the DP2 autumn, when the investigation deadline and the mock arrive within a fortnight of each other.

Al Nahda

Split by the Dubai boundary, with many students at Al Qusais and Mirdif campuses. The return journey is the variable: we schedule after six and treat a timed script as the second half of the session rather than the first.

Muwaileh

Dense with private campuses, which also means students compare marked work with classmates. That is useful: a student who can see what a 6-scoring extended response looks like stops guessing at the standard.

Al Taawun

Coastal apartments close to the Al Mamzar crossing. Evening congestion through this corridor is the practical reason a 4pm slot becomes a 6.30pm slot between October and March.

Aljada

A newer mixed-use district with a growing Diploma cohort and a young parent population that asks for written progress records more often than average. The weekly note was designed partly for these conversations.

University City and Al Tai

Beside the emirate's higher-education campuses, which gives biology students a clearer picture of what a university biomedical course expects and tends to produce earlier, more serious subject choices.

Khor Fakkan and Kalba

The east-coast exclaves, where a Higher Level biology specialist is not reachable in person inside a school evening. Online delivery is the only format that puts a level-matched tutor in front of a student here.

Send the subject, the year and a recent marked paper

Higher Level biology, which DP year, which campus - and, if you have one, a recent marked paper or test script. A real marked script shortens the diagnosis by a fortnight, because the failure modes are already visible on it rather than needing to be reproduced.

A free diagnostic lesson that produces a baseline

The first session is free and ends with a short timed set sat under conditions. You receive the marked script with the mark scheme logic shown and a written list of named failure modes with a mark cost against each, whether or not you continue with us. That list is the baseline everything afterwards is measured against.

  3. 03

Agree the ledger, not just the schedule

We set out what should have changed by week four, week six and week ten, in terms specific enough to be wrong. A plan that says the student will improve in biology cannot be checked. A plan that says the command term count will fall on a fresh paper by week four can.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, weekly marked work, weekly note

Each session produces a dated marked script and one line naming what moved. All of it stays in one place, and you are welcome to share it with the school's biology department. Nothing in the record is written to reassure you; a plateau is recorded as a plateau.

  5. 05

    Six-week review where you decide

At six weeks we put the baseline and the current script side by side and tell you which failure modes closed and which did not. If two of them have not moved, we change the tutor or the diagnosis rather than asking you to persist for another term on the strength of good lessons.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Evidence you can read without knowing biology

A marked script with mark scheme logic on the page, a dated draft log and a one-line weekly note are all readable by a parent who last studied biology decades ago. That is deliberate. Progress reporting that only the tutor can interpret is not reporting.

A baseline before a plan

We produce a marked baseline in the first fortnight and name the failure modes with a mark cost attached. Teaching before diagnosing is the most common way a term of Diploma biology tutoring produces nothing, and it is avoidable in one session.

A plateau reported as a plateau

Six pleasant sessions with no measurable change is a finding, and we write it down. Knowing at week six that something has to change is worth considerably more than a reassuring message at week twelve.

Level-matched rather than locally available

Higher Level biology losses sit in the HL-only content and in extended responses, so we match on level as tightly as on subject. Delivery is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes, as home visits are an India-only service.

The investigation documented, not drafted for the student

Four drafts with four jobs, each comment dated and keyed to a criterion, and every word of the report typed by the student. The log protects the student's Diploma and makes the boundary auditable by the school.

Market rates named, our figure given against a plan

Published market rates for Diploma subject tutoring in the UAE run roughly AED 150-450 an hour by tier and format, with cheaper online options below and premium named tutors above. We quote our own figure after the trial, against the agreed ledger, rather than publishing a rate that ignores the diagnosis.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What does a marked Higher Level biology script tell us that a school report does not?+

It tells you where the marks went, which a grade cannot. A marked script shows whether the loss was command terms, undeveloped extended responses, data questions answered without quoting figures, or genuine content gaps - and those four have entirely different remedies. A school report compresses a term into a grade and two sentences written by a teacher carrying a full cohort, which is accurate at the resolution it was built for. We produce a baseline marked script in the first fortnight precisely so that the term plan is built on visible mark losses rather than on an impression.

Which biology question type costs Sharjah students the most marks?+

On the scripts we see, extended responses first and data-based questions second. Extended responses lose marks for structure rather than content: a long paragraph of accurate but undeveloped statements, with no plan behind it. Data questions lose marks because students describe a trend without quoting the figures that show it, and ignore error bars entirely. Both are technique rather than knowledge, which is why they are the cheapest marks on the paper to recover. A command term audit usually finds a further six to twelve marks a paper where the biology was right and the answer shape was wrong.

How do error bars and statistical significance come up in biology papers?+

They appear in data-based questions, where candidates are shown unfamiliar results and asked to interpret them. The recurring loss is that students describe the means and ignore the bars, then assert a difference the data does not support. What earns marks is noticing overlap, saying what overlap implies about the difference, and using whatever test result is provided rather than restating the numbers. Students taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation usually handle this well. Everyone else needs it taught in the biology sessions, on five unfamiliar graphs a week with the trend sentences marked.

How many drafts should a biology internal assessment go through?+

Four, each with a distinct job rather than a general review. The first looks only at method feasibility and happens before data collection: can the question be answered with the organisms, equipment and time available. The second checks data adequacy - points, repeats, uncertainty, processing. The third asks whether the conclusion is actually supported by the data. The fourth works on the evaluation, where biology reports most often fall short. Four rounds of comments on everything at once produce a tidier document and no movement against the criteria, which is the pattern we are trying to avoid.

What counts as real grade movement in a single term?+

On a whole paper sat under time, a sustained one-grade movement inside fourteen weeks is a good term for a student who started with technique problems rather than content gaps. Before that, the honest evidence is narrower: a falling command term count by week four, trends described with figures quoted by week six, planned extended responses by week ten. Those are visible on the page whether or not the mark has caught up. Anyone promising grade movement in a month is describing luck, and we would rather name the intermediate markers that can actually be checked.

Why does my son write long biology answers and still score poorly?+

Length is not what the mark scheme rewards. An extended response earns marks for a structured argument in which each point is developed and supported with a named example, not for volume of accurate statements. The usual script shows a dense paragraph where four separate points sit side by side, none of them taken past the assertion stage. The fix is to mark the plan separately from the prose for a few weeks: the student writes a four-point plan, the plan is marked, and only then do they write. Marks move before the writing gets any longer.

Is Higher Level biology more memorising than understanding?+

It is both, and the balance shifts between question types. Short answers reward exact terminology, so recall matters and vague paraphrase loses marks that the student feels they deserved. Data questions and extended responses reward reasoning, and no amount of recall rescues them. Students who treat the whole subject as memorisation score well on the first third of a paper and lose the rest, which is a pattern a marked script makes obvious in one reading. The sequence that works is to secure terminology with delayed retesting, then spend the hours on reasoning.

How quickly should we expect to see evidence that the tutoring is working?+

Within four weeks you should see something on paper, even if the grade has not moved. The earliest reliable marker is the command term count falling on a fresh marked paper, because that is a habit rather than a body of knowledge. By week six, data-question answers should be quoting figures. By week ten, extended responses should be planned before written. If none of those has happened by week six, the problem is the match, the diagnosis or the between-session work, and all three are cheaper to fix then than at the end of a term.

Which Sharjah schools do your Diploma biology students come from?+

Inside the emirate, mainly the Diploma campuses around Muwaileh, University City and the city centre, all under SPEA, the Sharjah Private Education Authority. A second large group lives in Sharjah and attends school across the Dubai boundary under KHDA, commuting from Al Nahda, Al Qasimia and Al Taawun. The two groups keep different term dates and internal deadline calendars, so we ask for the school's internal deadline list before setting a plan. Schools are named on this page as context for the local education ecosystem; no affiliation with any of them is claimed.

Can one tutor take both biology and chemistry for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth testing rather than assuming. A tutor genuinely strong at Higher Level in both sciences exists but is not common, and a tutor who is strong in one and adequate in the other produces a visible asymmetry in the marked scripts within a month. Where the evidence shows that asymmetry, we split the subjects between two tutors even though it is less convenient. The scheduling saving from one tutor is real; it is not worth a term of mediocre marking in the second subject.

Can a biology investigation be run without greenhouse space or animal work?+

Yes, and most of the strongest reports we see avoid both. Investigations using yeast, germinating seeds, enzyme activity, simple human physiology within the school's ethical guidelines, or published ecological and genomic databases are assessed against the same four criteria. The binding question is whether the dependent variable produces a usable range with enough repeats in the time available, not whether the organism is impressive. Ethical constraints on any work involving organisms are set by the school, so that conversation belongs with the supervisor before a method is settled.

What does the weekly session note actually contain?+

One or two lines, written to be read in ten seconds: the topic or criterion worked on, what the marked work showed, and what changed since last week. If nothing changed, it says so. It is deliberately not a summary of the lesson, because a lesson summary tells you what the tutor did rather than what the student can now do. Across a term the notes form a short record that makes a plateau visible as clearly as a gain, and you are welcome to pass them to the school's biology department.

Does online tutoring work for a subject with so much practical content?+

For the assessed skills, yes. Data interpretation, extended response structure, genetics problems, terminology and investigation feedback all work at least as well over live video, because everything that matters is on a page that both people can see and annotate. What online delivery cannot replace is bench time, which belongs at school in any case - a tutor arriving at a Sharjah home could not provide laboratory access either. What it does provide is a Higher Level biology specialist on Gulf Standard Time rather than whoever is reachable from your building.

How do we decide whether to change tutor after six weeks?+

On the evidence, not on the relationship. At the six-week review we put the baseline script beside the current one and report which named failure modes closed, which narrowed and which did not move. If two or more have not moved and the between-session work was done, the match or the diagnosis is wrong, and we change the tutor rather than asking you to continue. A student who enjoys the sessions is a good sign and not a result; the scripts are the result.

What happens to the evidence trail during Ramadan?+

It continues, with lower expectations written in advance. School hours shorten, late-afternoon concentration drops and families want the evening protected, so our Sharjah Diploma students usually move to post-Iftar sessions or a weekend-weighted pattern with lighter between-session work. The ledger for that month is set deliberately low, so a flat month is recorded as expected rather than as a plateau. In a DP2 year the month often sits close to an internal deadline or a mock, which is a reason to plan the shift before it starts.

Is Higher Level biology required for medicine or biomedical science?+

Many medical, dental and biomedical programmes expect biology or chemistry at Higher Level, and a good number expect both, but requirements are set by each university and revised between admission cycles. Check the published entry requirements for every programme on your child's list, including the universities in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and abroad, rather than relying on a general rule or on what applied two years ago. From the teaching side, the Higher Level course is the better preparation for a first-year university module whatever the stated minimum turns out to be.

Ask for the baseline script before you commit to a term

If you are considering Higher Level biology support in Sharjah, the thing to ask any tutor for is a marked baseline and a written list of what it shows. Our first lesson is free and produces exactly that: a short timed set sat under conditions, marked with the mark scheme logic on the page, and a list of named failure modes with a mark cost against each - yours to keep whether or not you continue with us. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, booked around the Sharjah or Dubai school run. Send the DP year, the campus and a recent marked paper if you have one.
