IB DP Physics HL Tutor in Sharjah

An IB DP Physics HL tutor in Sharjah teaches to the three components separately, because they are three different exams. Paper 1A is multiple choice. Paper 1B is data and the experimental programme. Paper 2 is written physics under command terms. The scientific investigation is a 3,000-word document marked against four criteria. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a student in Muwaileh, Al Zahia or Al Ramtha can work after the school run. The trial lesson is free.

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

Physics HL is three assessments wearing one subject name

A student who says physics is going badly almost never means all of physics. They mean one component. A Sharjah student can be strong on Paper 1A multiple choice and lose consistently on Paper 2 because the written answers never reach the command term being asked for. Another can handle every derivation in class and drop a third of Paper 1B because gradient interpretation, uncertainty propagation and significant figures were treated as laboratory housekeeping rather than as examined content. The first job of an IB DP Physics HL tutor in Sharjah is to work out which of the three components the loss is in, and that is a diagnosis made from marked scripts, not from a conversation.

Higher Level Physics runs to 240 taught hours, of which 40 belong to the experimental programme. The syllabus is organised into five themes rather than topics plus options, and the Higher Level content sits inside those themes rather than in a separate block, which is why an SL textbook is an unreliable guide to what an HL student needs. Space, time and motion carries rigid body mechanics and relativity at HL. The particulate nature of matter carries entropy and the second law. Fields and the nuclear and quantum theme both extend considerably.

Assessment is the same shape at both levels with different durations and mark totals. Paper 1 is split into 1A, which is multiple choice, and 1B, which is data analysis and questions on the experimental programme; together they carry 36 per cent. Paper 2 is short-answer and extended-response physics and carries 44 per cent, making it the single largest component in the Diploma physics grade. The scientific investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent and is marked out of 24 against four criteria, inside a 3,000-word limit.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For physics this matters less than families expect and helps more than they expect. Screen sharing means a graph can be annotated live, a mark scheme can be read side by side with the student's own answer, and a data set can be worked through in the same spreadsheet the student will use for the investigation. The annotated file is sent afterwards rather than left in a notebook.

Sharjah's practical constraint is the clock rather than the content. Students in Al Nahda and Al Taawun who cross into Dubai schools are rarely free before six. Students in Muwaileh, Al Zahia and Al Ramtha have shorter runs but later club schedules. Students in Kalba and Khor Fakkan, on the emirate's east coast, are two hours from Sharjah city and effectively outside any in-person tutoring market at all, which is the plainest case for an online specialist that exists in the country.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics HL is reached by two main routes in Sharjah: through MYP sciences, or through IGCSE Physics or Combined Science. The route changes which component breaks first, so it is worth knowing which one your child took.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP sciences is assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criteria B and C are the direct ancestors of the Diploma investigation, and a student who has written several MYP science investigations arrives in DP1 with a real advantage on research design. What MYP does not provide is experience of a timed multiple-choice physics paper.

Several Sharjah schools run MYP through to Year 11 before the Diploma, so a physics student may reach HL having never sat an externally styled paper under timed conditions. The first marked Paper 1A set a tutor sends back is often the first time that student has seen how fast 40 multiple-choice questions actually move.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Physics HL is one of three Higher Level subjects a Diploma student carries alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The practical demand is unusual: 40 of the 240 hours are experimental, and the investigation that comes out of them is submitted to the school, marked internally against four criteria and moderated externally. Time management across HL physics, HL maths and the Extended Essay is the real DP2 problem.

Sharjah DP cohorts are small, and a physics set of eight or ten students is common. That means genuine attention from the teacher and, often, only one physicist in the building. An outside specialist is doing the job a second physics colleague would do in a larger Dubai department: a second reading of an investigation, and a second opinion on an HL derivation.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students take Diploma courses alongside a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student carrying Physics at Higher Level sits exactly the same papers and submits exactly the same investigation as a full Diploma candidate, with a different workload shape around it. The experimental hours still have to be found inside the school timetable.

Career-related Programme provision is uncommon across the UAE and rarer in Sharjah than in Dubai, so a CP student taking HL physics is often alone in that combination in their year. Fitting sessions around a placement is a calendar problem rather than a travel problem when lessons are delivered over video.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics HL is almost never taken alone. These are the subjects that sit next to it in a Sharjah Diploma block most often, and what each one actually assesses, because the overlaps decide whether one tutor or two is the sensible answer.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes, two papers and a scientific investigation. HL adds rigid body mechanics and relativity in the motion theme, entropy and the second law in the particulate theme, and substantial extensions in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics. Paper 2 at HL runs to two and a half hours and carries 44 per cent of the grade.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The natural partner to Physics HL and the usual prerequisite for engineering and physics degrees. Calculus, trigonometric identities and vectors all do direct work in HL physics. A student weak on logarithms and exponentials will struggle with radioactive decay and capacitor discharge long before the physics itself is the problem.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics-weighted and technology-assumed, with 36 of its 120 SL content hours on statistics and probability. It pairs workably with Physics HL for a student heading towards applied science or data, but many engineering courses specify Analysis and Approaches, so the combination should be checked against the universities on the list.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the uncertainty, significant-figure and graph-linearisation work with physics, which is why one tutor can often serve both. The data-analysis questions in chemistry Paper 1B reward the same discipline. Energetics and kinetics are the topics where a physics student's instincts transfer most directly.

Biology

HL and SL

Less overlap in content, more in investigation method. The four assessment criteria for the scientific investigation are shared across all the sciences, so a student taking physics and biology is writing two documents to the same rubric and should be made to see them as one skill rather than two.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pairs well with Physics HL for engineering and computing applications. The internal assessment is a solution built for a real client rather than an experiment, so the deadline sits in a different place in DP2 and needs mapping alongside the physics investigation rather than after it.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Mechanics, materials and energy content overlaps with physics directly, and the design project is a long internal assessment that competes for the same DP2 weeks as the physics investigation. Students taking both need a single calendar rather than two, which is a planning job worth doing in September.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Physics is a frequent Extended Essay subject, and a physics essay usually needs its own experimental data, which means two sets of laboratory time in the same year. Where a student is writing a physics Extended Essay and a physics investigation, the two topics must be genuinely distinct and the calendars must be built together.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics HL support takes three recognisable shapes, all delivered online and one-to-one over live video. The difference is which component the hour is pointed at.

Component-targeted weekly sessions

A 90-minute weekly block aimed at whichever component the marked diagnostic identified. If the loss is in Paper 2, the work is written answers under command terms, marked against the published mark scheme. If it is in Paper 1B, the work is data sets, gradients, uncertainties and significant figures. Mixing the two in one session is how a term gets spent without either moving.

  • Questions set in advance and marked before the session, with marks shown per criterion
  • Mark scheme read alongside the student's own wording, line by line
  • A running log of which command terms are costing marks
  • The annotated script sent after every session

Investigation support alongside the school supervisor

A short block timed to the school's internal investigation deadlines. The tutor reads the student's own draft, comments against research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and asks the questions a moderator would ask about control of variables and uncertainty treatment. The tutor does not choose the research question, supply data, or add writing to the file.

  • Comments keyed to the four criteria and their 24 marks, not to general style
  • Attention to the 3,000-word limit and what belongs in an appendix
  • Uncertainty propagation and graph choice checked before the write-up, not after
  • Scheduled backwards from the school's submission date

Pre-mock and final-stretch intensive

Two or three sessions a week in the weeks before a mock or the May session, each built on a full paper sat under timed conditions. Useful where the physics is largely known and the loss is in pace, in command-term discipline, or in the data-analysis half of Paper 1 that students leave until last and then run out of time on.

  • Full Paper 1 and Paper 2 attempts under timed conditions
  • Marks reconciled against the mark scheme rather than self-assessed
  • Derivations rehearsed to the point of being written from memory under time
  • A written list of recurring error types to check in the exam room

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

What Higher Level Physics actually asks for

Physics at Higher Level is 240 taught hours, five themes, two written papers and one investigation. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and splits in two: Paper 1A is multiple choice, Paper 1B is data analysis and questions on the experimental programme. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and is short-answer and extended-response physics. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent, is marked out of 24 across four criteria and must fit inside 3,000 words. Those numbers are the whole structure, and most students cannot recite them in DP1.

The reason to start there rather than with content is that the three components fail independently. Multiple choice rewards fast recognition and penalises nothing but slowness and misreading. Paper 1B rewards laboratory numeracy: reading a gradient, propagating an uncertainty, choosing what to plot so that a relationship becomes linear. Paper 2 rewards written physics in the register the command term demands, where the difference between state, outline, explain and discuss is worth real marks. A student can be good at one and poor at another with no inconsistency.

A Higher Level student also carries content that does not exist at Standard Level, and it is not bolted on at the end. The HL additions sit inside the five themes, so a student revising from an SL resource will quietly miss rigid body mechanics, relativity, entropy and the deeper field and quantum material. That is one of the most common and most expensive gaps we find in a January diagnostic, because it is invisible until a question lands on it.

The practical consequence for tutoring is that the first session should produce a component-level diagnosis rather than a topic list. Which component is losing most marks, in what error type, and on which themes. Everything after that is scheduling.

02

The five themes and where the Higher Level content hides

The current physics syllabus is built on five themes rather than a core plus options. Theme A is space, time and motion. Theme B is the particulate nature of matter. Theme C is wave behaviour. Theme D is fields. Theme E is nuclear and quantum physics. Each theme carries Standard Level content and, for Higher Level students, additional content inside the same theme, which is a structural change from older syllabuses that families and older siblings may remember differently.

The practical effect is that an HL student cannot safely revise from an SL summary, and cannot safely assume a topic is finished because the SL material on it is secure. Rigid body mechanics and relativity extend theme A well beyond the SL treatment of motion and forces. Entropy and the second law extend theme B past the gas laws. Theme D extends into induction, and theme E into the quantum and nuclear material that most reliably separates a 5 from a 7.

Experimental skills are threaded through all five themes rather than confined to the investigation. Paper 1B can ask about apparatus, method, systematic and random error, and the treatment of uncertainty in the context of any theme, which means the 40 experimental hours are examined content and not a side activity. Students who treat practical work as the part that does not count lose marks twice: once in Paper 1B, and again in the investigation.

The table below maps each theme to its content, the Higher Level additions that sit inside it, and the specific place we most often see Sharjah HL students losing marks.

03

Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 are three different exams

Treating Paper 1 as one thing is the most common planning error in Diploma physics. Paper 1A is multiple choice and rewards recognition speed, confident elimination and a willingness to move on. A student who treats every item as a derivation runs out of time and loses marks on questions they could have answered. The discipline is practised by sitting whole sets under time, not by working through items at leisure.

Paper 1B is laboratory numeracy under exam conditions: data tables, graphs, gradients, intercepts, uncertainties, significant figures and questions about method and error. It is the component most likely to be neglected, because the skills look like coursework skills rather than physics, and the component where improvement comes fastest once a student practises on marked questions. Choosing what to plot so that a relationship linearises is a teachable technique, and it is worth marks repeatedly.

Paper 2 is written physics, and the command term is the instruction. State wants a statement with no justification. Outline wants a brief account. Explain wants a causal chain. Discuss wants a balanced argument reaching a judgement. Students who write a good explanation where the paper asked them to state are wasting time; students who state where the paper asked them to explain are losing marks. Marking a student's own answer alongside the mark scheme, sentence by sentence, is the only reliable way to make that visible.

The table below sets out the three components with their formats, weightings and the loss pattern each produces.

04

Where Physics HL marks are actually lost

  • Command-term mismatch — explaining where the paper asked for a statement, or vice versa
  • Causal chains left incomplete, so an explain question earns only the recall mark
  • Uncertainties propagated as absolute where fractional was needed, or over-quoted
  • Gradients read without a large triangle, or reported without their physical meaning
  • A whole theme scoring nothing across several papers — a gap, not bad luck

Across marked HL scripts, the recurring losses are narrow and repeatable. Command-term mismatch is the largest: an answer written in the wrong register for the marks on offer. Next is the unsupported assertion, where a student names the correct physics but never links cause to effect, so an explain question earns the state mark and nothing more. Then there are the arithmetic and presentation losses: significant figures inconsistent with the data given, units omitted on a final answer, a prefix dropped between millimetres and metres in a calculation that was otherwise correct.

Uncertainty treatment deserves its own line. Students routinely quote an uncertainty to three significant figures, or propagate by adding absolute uncertainties where fractional ones were needed, or quote a value and an uncertainty to inconsistent precision. These are not conceptual failures and they are not hard to fix, but they cannot be fixed from a grade; they need a marked data question with the propagation written out and corrected.

Graph work produces its own cluster. Axes without units, a line of best fit drawn through the origin because it looks tidier, a gradient read off without using a large triangle, a gradient interpreted without stating what the quantity physically represents. The last of those is the expensive one, because the mark is almost always for the physical meaning rather than for the number.

Finally, there is the pattern that only shows up over several scripts: the theme that is quietly absent. A student who has never scored on a theme E question in six papers has not been unlucky. They have a gap, and it is almost always in the Higher Level extension of that theme rather than in the core.

05

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

The investigation is one report, inside a 3,000-word limit, marked out of 24 across four equally weighted criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Equal weighting is the fact students most often get wrong. Enormous effort goes into collecting data and writing a conclusion, while research design and evaluation — together half the marks — are handled in a paragraph each.

Research design is where most first drafts lose marks, and it is decided before any data exists. The research question has to be answerable, with a clearly identified independent and dependent variable and a defensible account of what is controlled and why. A question that is too broad produces data that cannot support a conclusion no matter how carefully it is collected. The useful tutoring intervention happens here, weeks before the laboratory session, and it is the one families most often ask for too late.

Data analysis rewards correct processing, appropriate graphing and an honest treatment of uncertainty, not volume. Conclusion rewards an answer to the research question that is justified by the processed data and placed against accepted physics. Evaluation rewards specific, prioritised weaknesses in the student's own method with realistic improvements, not a list of generic limitations about human error and equipment accuracy.

One scheduling point follows from all of this. Because research design is settled before data exists and evaluation is written after the data is in, investigation support is naturally two short blocks rather than one. A block of two or three sessions while the question and the variable list are still being decided, then a second block once the processed data and graphs exist. Families who book one long block in the middle of the process tend to get the least value from it, because the design decisions are already fixed and the evaluation material does not exist yet. The table below sets out the four criteria, their marks and the problem each one most often shows on a first draft.

PHYSICS SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION — FOUR CRITERIA, 24 MARKS, 3,000 WORDS
CriterionMarksWhat it rewardsThe usual first-draft problem
Research design6An answerable question with identified and justified variables and methodA question too broad to answer, written after the data was collected
Data analysis6Correct processing, appropriate graphs, honest uncertainty treatmentRaw data presented at length with minimal processing and no uncertainty
Conclusion6An answer justified by the processed data and compared with accepted physicsA restatement of the trend with no comparison to established theory
Evaluation6Specific, prioritised weaknesses with realistic improvementsGeneric limitations about human error and apparatus accuracy
Word limit—Concision; material beyond the limit is not assessedRaw tables and repeated calculations left in the body instead of an appendix
06

Running a physics investigation when laboratory time is tight

Laboratory access is a real constraint in a small Sharjah physics department, where one preparation room may serve the whole senior school and the window for investigation work is a few timetabled afternoons. The honest position is that a tutor cannot create laboratory time and should not pretend otherwise. What a tutor can do is make the time that exists count, by making sure the research question, the variable list and the measurement plan are settled before the student walks into the room.

The criteria do not require apparatus-heavy work. A well-designed investigation using a simple pendulum, a trolley and a ramp, a resistance wire, or a sound measurement on a phone can score across all four criteria if the design is tight and the uncertainty treatment is honest. Over-ambitious investigations with borrowed equipment and three variables fail on research design, not on effort. Simplicity is a scoring strategy here, not a compromise.

Where the school permits it, published data sets and simulations can support an investigation, and the criteria are applied in the same way. The design has to be as explicit about the source, its limitations and the sampling decisions as a laboratory method would be about apparatus and control. Your child's teacher is the authority on what their school allows, and that question should be asked before a plan is built around it.

A session over video is well suited to this part of the work. The measurement plan, the spreadsheet, the graph choice and the uncertainty columns can all be built on a shared screen before any data exists, and again after the data is in, with the student making every change in their own file.

07

SPEA, the Sharjah school calendar and when the physics deadlines bite

Private schools in Sharjah are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority. SPEA regulates private education in the emirate and, as the federal portal records, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That remit is wider than inspection, and it is why a school's internal assessment calendar is a fixed object rather than a negotiable one. A physics plan that ignores it is a plan that arrives late.

The dates that actually matter in HL physics are internal. The investigation has a school submission date with a draft date some weeks earlier, mocks are scheduled by the school, and the Extended Essay deadlines for a physics essay often land in the same term. The useful window for outside support on the investigation is before the first draft is submitted. Families arriving a fortnight before final submission are asking for the one thing that cannot be given honestly: substantive change to a nearly finished document that must remain the student's own work.

The mandatory national subjects sit in the same timetable. Across the country, private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. Those lessons and their homework occupy the same evenings as HL physics, so a weekly plan that assumes the Diploma block is the only demand on a Sharjah student's week will not survive contact with February.

One point of language. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no permit, licence or recognition from SPEA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and any tutoring service in the UAE presenting itself as carrying a regulator's blessing should be asked to show the permit. Individual tutors providing private lessons in the UAE need the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which MoHRE grants free of charge for two years.

08

Academic honesty and the physics investigation

The investigation must be the student's own work, and the school's supervisor signs a declaration to that effect. That is a real safeguard rather than a formality: a report containing material the student did not produce is an academic misconduct matter for the IB, and the consequence lands on the student. Any physics tutoring arrangement has to be built around that from the first session, and a tutor who is vague about where their boundary sits is the wrong tutor for coursework.

What a tutor may properly do is a long list. Teach the physics the investigation needs, including HL content not yet covered in class. Explain what each of the four criteria rewards, in the criterion's own language. Read a draft the student has produced and say where the uncertainty treatment is inconsistent, where the conclusion fails to engage with accepted physics, where the evaluation is generic. Ask the question that makes a student notice a systematic error in their own method. Check an arithmetic step.

What a tutor may not do is equally clear. Choose the research question. Supply the data. Process the data on the student's behalf. Write passages into the report. Produce the evaluation the student then adopts. Edit a draft until the voice has changed. There are operators in this market selling completed internal assessments to UAE families at four-figure prices; a family buying one is buying a misconduct finding with their child's name on it.

The working test is whether the student could defend every line of the report to their supervisor tomorrow, in their own words, including every uncertainty figure and every graph choice. If the answer is no for any line, that line should not be in the document.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Sharjah

Physics sessions are longer than most — a derivation or a data set does not fit neatly into 45 minutes — so the question of when a 90-minute block is actually available matters more here than in other subjects. These notes are about that.

Muwaileh

Short local school runs but late finishes at the newer schools, so the realistic 90-minute block is usually 6pm or 6.30pm. Several Sharjah IB schools sit within this area, which means a tutor familiar with one school's laboratory schedule often already knows the next.

Al Zahia

Villa community beside City Centre Al Zahia with a young Diploma cohort. Households here are usually quiet enough for a full Paper 2 attempt under timed conditions, which is the single most useful thing a DP2 physics student can do on a weekend morning.

Al Ramtha

Established residential district with a short run to the inland schools and little evening traffic friction. A 5.30pm start holds through a term here more reliably than in the Dubai-border districts, which makes a twice-weekly plan workable in DP2.

Tilal City

Inland masterplanned plots out towards the Maliha Road, with longer drives to most schools and very little local tutoring supply. Families here are usually choosing between a long evening drive and an online session, and physics specialists are scarce in that trade-off.

Al Suyoh

Newer inland community near Sharjah Sustainable City, growing faster than its school provision, so school runs tend to be longer than the postcode suggests. Later evening slots and weekend blocks work better here than weekday afternoons.

Kalba and Khor Fakkan

Sharjah's east-coast exclaves on the Gulf of Oman, roughly two hours from Sharjah city across the Hajar mountains. There is effectively no local Higher Level physics tutoring market, so an online specialist is not a second-best option here but the only realistic one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level, the school and the next deadline

A short message naming Physics at Higher Level rather than Standard, the year group, the school, and the next internal date that matters: a mock week, a draft investigation deadline, or a report. The deadline shapes the plan more than anything else you can tell us.

  2. 02

Sit a free trial with a component diagnostic

Sixty to ninety minutes with the tutor, built around short sets drawn from Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 so the diagnosis is by component rather than by topic. The marked sets and a written note naming the weakest component come back to you whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

Agree a plan read backwards from the school's dates

The tutor maps the term from the school's investigation and mock dates backwards. You see which weeks are component technique, which are theme content, which are investigation work, and where the Extended Essay collides, before anything is booked.

  4. 04

Weekly 90-minute sessions with marked work each time

Questions set in advance, marked before the lesson against the published mark scheme, and the lesson spent on what the marking found. A written note goes out afterwards naming the command terms and error types that reappeared, and the annotated script goes with it.

  5. 05

Review the component log at six weeks

At week six we look at the log with you. If the same command-term and uncertainty errors are appearing at the same rate, the approach changes rather than the hours increasing. Adding sessions to a plan that is not moving is the most common way physics tutoring money is wasted.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis by component, not by topic

The first session separates Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 and finds which one is losing marks. A term aimed at the wrong component can feel productive and change nothing, and the only way to tell the difference is marked evidence from all three.

Higher Level content, not Standard Level with extras

The HL additions sit inside the five themes rather than in a separate block, so rigid body mechanics, relativity, entropy and the deeper field and quantum material are taught as part of each theme. Revising HL physics from an SL resource is the gap we find most often in January.

Paper 1B treated as examined content

Gradients, uncertainty propagation, significant figures and method critique are worth marks in the written exam, not just in the laboratory. They also improve faster than anything else in physics once a student practises them on marked data questions.

Workable for the east coast and the inland communities

Kalba, Khor Fakkan, Tilal City and Al Suyoh have almost no local Higher Level physics supply. Online delivery removes distance from the equation entirely, and removes a tutor's travel time from the hour you are paying for.

A stated boundary on the investigation

Comments on the student's own draft against the four criteria, and nothing written into the document. The research question, the data and the evaluation stay the student's. We state that before the first session rather than after a supervisor asks a question.

Disclosed coverage rather than a vague promise

Higher Level physics specialists are scarcer than general science tutors. If none is free in your window we say so and give you the honest options, rather than seating a general science tutor in an HL physics slot and letting you find out in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What are the three assessed components in IB Physics at Higher Level?+

Paper 1, Paper 2 and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and splits into Paper 1A, which is multiple choice, and Paper 1B, which is data analysis and questions on the experimental programme. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and is short-answer and extended-response physics. The investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent, is marked out of 24 across four criteria and must fit within 3,000 words. Those three figures are worth a student knowing by heart in DP1, because they determine where revision time should go.

How much extra content does Physics HL carry over Physics SL?+

Higher Level runs to 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the extra content sits inside the five themes rather than in a separate section. Space, time and motion gains rigid body mechanics and relativity. The particulate theme gains entropy and the second law. Fields and the nuclear and quantum theme both extend substantially. The structural point matters more than the hour count: an HL student revising from a Standard Level summary will miss material entirely rather than meet a lighter version of it.

Is Paper 1B genuinely a different exam from Paper 1A?+

In practice, yes, even though they sit inside the same paper and the same weighting. Paper 1A is multiple choice and rewards recognition speed and confident elimination. Paper 1B is data analysis and experimental-programme questions: tables, graphs, gradients, uncertainties, significant figures and method critique. They need different practice. A student who prepares only by doing multiple-choice sets will arrive at Paper 1B having never written an uncertainty propagation under time, and that is a recoverable but expensive gap.

What is the word limit on the IB Physics scientific investigation?+

Three thousand words. Material beyond the limit is not assessed, which makes the limit a scoring consideration rather than an administrative one. Raw data tables, repeated identical calculations, long apparatus lists and photographs belong in an appendix. The body should carry the research question, the method, the processed data with its uncertainty treatment, the conclusion against accepted physics, and a specific evaluation. First drafts that break the limit are usually two thousand words of argument buried in evidence that should have been moved.

Can my child run a physics investigation if laboratory time at school is very limited?+

Usually yes, provided the design is settled before the laboratory session rather than during it. The criteria reward a tight research question, honest uncertainty treatment and a specific evaluation, none of which requires elaborate apparatus. A pendulum, a ramp and trolley, a resistance wire or a sound measurement can score across all four criteria. Where a school permits published data sets or simulations, the same criteria apply with the source and its limitations treated as explicitly as apparatus would be. Your child's teacher decides what the school allows.

Which physics theme do Higher Level students in Sharjah lose most marks on?+

On marked scripts the recurring loss is in the fields theme and in the Higher Level extensions of nuclear and quantum physics. Potential and field strength get used interchangeably, induction questions produce direction errors, and decay calculations fail because logarithms were never secure rather than because the physics was misunderstood. The useful diagnostic is not which theme feels hardest but which one has scored nothing across several papers, because a theme with a consistent zero is a gap rather than a run of bad questions.

Do the command terms really change how a physics answer should be written?+

They are the instruction, and they carry marks. State wants a statement with no justification. Outline wants a brief account. Explain wants a causal chain where each step follows from the last. Discuss wants a balanced argument that reaches a judgement. A student writing a careful explanation where the paper asked them to state is losing time they need later; a student stating where the paper asked them to explain is losing marks outright. The only reliable fix is marking the student's own wording against the mark scheme, sentence by sentence.

How many hours of Physics HL support does a Sharjah DP2 student usually need?+

Most families start with one 90-minute session a week and move to two in the weeks around mocks and the investigation deadline. Ninety minutes rather than sixty matters in physics, because a derivation or a full data question does not fit into a shorter block without being cut short. What determines the total is the component diagnosis: a Paper 2 command-term problem moves in weeks, whereas a missing Higher Level theme takes a term. We would rather tell you which of those it is than quote a number first.

Can one tutor take Physics HL and Mathematics AA HL for the same student?+

Often, and where the tutor genuinely covers both it is a sensible economy. The overlap is real: calculus, exponentials, logarithms, trigonometric identities and vectors all do direct work in HL physics, and a student struggling with radioactive decay is frequently struggling with logarithms rather than with nuclear physics. The caution is that a tutor strong in one and merely competent in the other will default to their stronger subject. Ask for marked evidence in both before combining them into a single weekly slot.

How should uncertainties be presented in a Higher Level physics answer?+

Consistently and modestly. An uncertainty is normally quoted to one significant figure, with the value rounded to the same decimal place. Fractional or percentage uncertainties are added when quantities are multiplied or divided; absolute uncertainties are added when they are added or subtracted. Students lose marks by over-quoting an uncertainty, by mixing absolute and fractional treatment in one calculation, or by giving a final value to more figures than the data justifies. None of these is conceptually hard, and none of them can be fixed from a grade alone.

Is Physics HL needed to study engineering at a university in the UAE?+

Many engineering programmes expect physics and mathematics at Higher Level, and several specify Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation. Requirements differ by institution and by programme, and they change between admission years. The reliable approach is to read the stated entry requirements on each university's own admissions pages for the intended year of entry, and to do it before the DP1 option blocks are fixed, because a Higher Level course cannot be created after the timetable has closed.

Does a Physics HL tutor need to be based in Sharjah to be useful?+

No, and insisting on it narrows the pool sharply. What matters is whether the tutor knows the current five-theme syllabus, the Higher Level additions inside it, the three assessment components and the four investigation criteria. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, which means a specialist can be matched on subject and level rather than on driving distance. For families in Kalba, Khor Fakkan or Tilal City, where local Higher Level physics supply is almost nil, that is the difference between support and none.

Can a tutor help with the physics investigation write-up?+

A tutor can teach the physics, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, read a draft the student has produced and say where the uncertainty treatment is inconsistent or the evaluation is generic, and ask questions that make a student notice a systematic error in their own method. A tutor may not choose the research question, supply or process the data, or put writing into the report. The supervisor signs a declaration that the work is the student's own, and a report containing material the student did not produce is a misconduct matter for the IB.

What happens to a physics plan during Ramadan in Sharjah?+

It moves rather than stopping. School days shorten and the productive study window shifts late, so sessions commonly go to a post-Iftar slot or a later weekend morning. Because lessons run online there is no travel window to work around, so a temporary timetable is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation. Planning those weeks in advance matters for a DP2 physics student, because the period frequently falls close to investigation deadlines and the final run of mock papers.

Which Sharjah schools offer IB Physics at Higher Level?+

Several of the emirate's IB Diploma schools offer physics at both levels, but a small cohort can mean Higher Level runs only in some years, or runs with a handful of students. The dependable way to find out is to ask the Diploma coordinator which sciences are timetabled for your child's year group and at which levels. Ask before option blocks close: a student who needs Higher Level physics for an engineering application cannot create the course afterwards, and a mid-year switch costs weeks of content.

Start with a diagnostic across all three components

If your child is taking Physics at Higher Level in a Sharjah school, the most useful first hour is a free trial built around short sets from Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2, marked and returned. You will see which component is actually losing marks, which command terms and uncertainty habits keep costing them, and whether a Higher Level theme is missing rather than weak. From there the term is planned backwards from your school's own investigation and mock dates. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the marked sets are yours to keep.
