IB DP Math AI SL Tutor in Sharjah

An IB DP Math AI SL tutor in Sharjah who works from marked paper rather than impressions. In the first month you receive a timed question set marked with method marks shown, a written diagnosis naming the two topics costing the most marks, and comments on your child's own exploration draft keyed to criteria A to E. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a student travelling home to Al Majaz, Muwaileh or Al Nahda can start after the school run. The trial lesson is free and the marked diagnostic is yours either way.

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

Judge an AI SL tutor on what comes back marked, not on what is promised

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL is the DP maths course built around real data, modelling and a calculator. Two papers carry 80 per cent of the grade between them and the mathematical exploration carries the remaining 20 per cent. A Sharjah family looking for an IB DP Math AI SL tutor in Sharjah is usually reacting to one of three signals: a predicted grade that dropped a band, an exploration draft the supervisor sent back with a short note, or a mock paper where the arithmetic was right and the marks were not. None of those three is solved by more explaining. They are solved by looking at the script.

That is why this page is organised around evidence rather than reassurance. Every claim a tutoring page makes about progress should be checkable by you, on paper, within four weeks. A marked question set shows where method marks were awarded and where an answer earned nothing because the working jumped. A commented exploration draft shows which of the five criteria is actually holding the mark down, which is almost never the one a student assumes. A weekly session note shows whether the same topic keeps reappearing, which is the single most useful diagnostic a parent can hold.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For AI SL that constraint turns out to be an advantage rather than a compromise. The course is calculator-dependent in a way that AA is not, so a tutor who can share a screen, drive the same graphic display calculator emulator your child uses, and annotate a marked script live is doing something a tutor sitting at a kitchen table with a pen cannot do as cleanly. The marked work is saved, dated and sent, rather than left behind in a notebook.

Sharjah adds its own scheduling problem. A large number of families living in Al Nahda, Al Taawun and Al Majaz send children to schools across the Dubai border, and the return journey down Al Ittihad Road decides whether a four o'clock session is realistic or fictional. Families in Muwaileh, Al Zahia and University City have shorter runs but later activity schedules. Online slots can be set at 6.30pm or 8pm without a tutor's travel time being priced into the hour, and they can move during Ramadan without the week collapsing.

Private schools in Sharjah are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That matters for a maths tutor in a practical way: your child's internal assessment calendar, reporting windows and mock timings are set inside a school working to SPEA's approved framework, and tutoring evidence is only useful if it arrives before those windows rather than after them.

At a glance

  • AI SL assessment: Paper 1 (40%), Paper 2 (40%), mathematical exploration (20%)
  • Both papers assume a graphic display calculator throughout — there is no non-calculator paper
  • Statistics and probability is the largest topic in AI SL at 36 of 120 content hours
  • The exploration is marked out of 20 across criteria A, B, C, D and E
  • Lessons are online and one-to-one; the marked work is sent to you, not kept in a file
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

AI SL sits at the end of a long run through the IB continuum, and the habits that decide an AI SL mark are usually formed two programmes earlier. Here is how the earlier stages feed into it for a Sharjah student, and what the evidence looks like at each one.

PYPAges 3-12 · Foundation to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP teaches mathematics inside units of inquiry rather than as a separate subject sequence, which means a child can arrive in Year 7 confident at reasoning and thin on written method. For an AI SL student eight years later, the residue shows up as working that is correct in the head and invisible on the page. Evidence at this stage is a portfolio and a teacher conference, not a mark.

Sharjah's IB continuum provision is small compared with Dubai's, so PYP families in Muwaileh and Al Zahia often choose between a continuum school and a British primary followed by a DP switch later. Either route works, but the second one makes the written-method gap more likely, and that gap is worth closing in Year 9 rather than in DP1.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP mathematics is marked against four criteria — knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts — each out of eight. Criterion C and criterion D are the direct ancestors of the AI SL exploration, because both reward a student who explains a method and comments on whether the answer is reasonable. An MYP student who scores well on A and badly on C is a predictable AI SL problem.

Several Sharjah schools run MYP to Year 11 and then move students into the Diploma, so your child may reach AI SL without ever having sat an external written paper under timed conditions. The first marked timed set a tutor sends back is often the first one a Sharjah MYP-route student has ever seen with method marks annotated.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

AI SL is one of two routes through DP mathematics, taken alongside five other subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Paper 1 is short-response, Paper 2 is extended-response, and both are sat with a graphic display calculator and the formula booklet. The exploration is submitted to the school, marked internally against five criteria and moderated externally, which is why the supervisor's comments and a tutor's comments must point the same way.

Sharjah DP cohorts are small, which cuts both ways. A student gets more attention from a subject teacher than a Dubai cohort of ninety would allow, but there may be only one AI SL teacher in the building and no second opinion on an exploration topic. An outside reader who knows the criteria is doing the job a second department colleague would do elsewhere.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP pairs DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student taking AI SL as one of their DP courses faces the same two papers and the same exploration as a full Diploma candidate, but with a different workload shape around it and a different deadline map. The exploration still carries 20 per cent of the AI SL grade.

CP provision across the UAE is thin and in Sharjah it is rarer still, so a CP student taking AI SL is often the only one in the year group doing exactly that combination. Scheduling support around a career-related placement is easier online than around a tutor's drive time between Al Qasimia and Al Suyoh.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Most families who ask about AI SL are also weighing one or two other DP subjects in the same conversation, usually because the timetable forces a choice. These are the courses that sit closest to AI SL in a Sharjah DP block, and what each actually assesses.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Built on modelling, statistics and technology. SL sits two 90-minute papers worth 40 per cent each; HL adds a Paper 3 of two extended problem-solving questions. Marks are lost on interpretation sentences, on conclusions to statistical tests stated without a comparison, and on rounding that drifts from three significant figures.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The algebraic and proof-led route. SL covers calculus and trigonometry in more analytical depth than AI SL and expects exact answers in surd and radian form. Students who switch from AA SL to AI SL mid-course usually gain on statistics and lose nothing on functions, but need the modelling language rebuilt from scratch.

Physics

SL and HL

Shares the uncertainty and graph-linearisation work with AI SL statistics, which is why one tutor can often serve both. Paper 1 is multiple choice plus data analysis, Paper 2 is extended response. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent and is assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Calculation-heavy in a way that rewards AI SL habits: significant figures, propagated uncertainty and unit discipline carry real marks. Organic mechanisms and energetics are where most Sharjah students lose ground, and the data-analysis half of Paper 1 is the part that moves fastest with practice on marked questions.

Biology

SL and HL

The statistics overlap with AI SL is larger than students expect. Standard deviation, error bars, the t-test and chi-squared all appear in biology data questions, so a student taking AI SL and Biology together is learning the same tests twice and should be made to notice it.

Economics

SL and HL

HL economics includes quantitative questions on elasticities, costs and national income accounting that sit squarely inside AI SL number and algebra. The three internal assessment commentaries are marked on diagrams, terminology and evaluation rather than on arithmetic, which surprises students who chose it for the maths.

Business Management

SL and HL

The quantitative toolkit — break-even, investment appraisal, ratio analysis — is AI SL number and algebra under different names. Marks are lost on the evaluation command terms rather than the calculations, so the tutoring need is usually structure and judgement, not method.

Psychology

SL and HL

The internal assessment is a replication of a simple experimental study with a statistical test, inferential reasoning and a written report. Students taking AI SL alongside psychology can reuse their understanding of significance and sampling, provided they keep the two write-up conventions apart.

Computer Science

SL and HL

Shares the algorithmic thinking and the modelling cycle with AI SL, and the internal assessment is a solution developed for a real client. Students who can reason about complexity and iteration tend to find the AI SL calculus and sequences topics straightforward.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Mathematics is a common knowledge-question route in TOK and a common Extended Essay subject. An AI SL student writing a maths Extended Essay is handling two independent pieces of mathematical writing in the same year, with different word limits and different supervisors, and the two calendars need to be mapped side by side.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support cover almost every AI SL request we receive from Sharjah. All are delivered online and one-to-one over live video; the difference is what the hour is spent on and what comes back marked.

Weekly taught session with marked work returned

The default for a student in DP1 or early DP2. One 60- or 90-minute session a week, built around a short timed question set set in advance and marked before the lesson, so the hour is spent on the two or three things the marking found rather than on a tour of the topic. The marked script and a written note are sent after every session.

  • Timed questions set between sessions and marked with method marks shown
  • A running record of which syllabus topic each lost mark belongs to
  • A short written note after each lesson naming what changed
  • Topic revisited only when the marking shows it is still costing marks

Exploration supervision alongside the school's own

A short block of sessions timed to the school's internal exploration deadlines. The tutor reads your child's own draft, comments against criteria A to E, and asks the questions a moderator would ask. The tutor does not supply a topic, supply data or add mathematics to the document; the work submitted must be the student's own, and the school's supervisor remains the person who signs the authenticity declaration.

  • Comments keyed to criterion letters, not to general style advice
  • Attention to notation, variable definitions and labelled graphs under criterion B
  • Reflection prompts rather than written reflections
  • Scheduled backwards from the school's internal submission date

Pre-mock and pre-session intensive

A compressed block in the weeks before a mock or the May session: two or three sessions a week, each built on a full paper sat under timed conditions and marked against the published mark scheme. Useful where the content is largely known and the loss is in timing, rounding, notation or calculator fluency rather than in understanding.

  • Full Paper 1 and Paper 2 attempts under timed conditions
  • Marks reconciled against the mark scheme line by line
  • Calculator routines drilled until they take seconds, not minutes
  • A written list of the recurring error types to check in the exam room

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

What an AI SL tutor in Sharjah should hand back in the first month

An IB DP Math AI SL tutor in Sharjah should produce four pieces of evidence inside four weeks. A timed question set, sat under exam conditions and returned marked with method marks shown. A one-page written diagnosis naming the two syllabus topics costing the most marks and the error type behind each. Comments on your child's own exploration draft, keyed to criteria A to E rather than to general writing advice. And a short note after each session saying what was worked on and what moved. If none of that exists by week four, there is nothing to judge the tutoring on.

Most families arrive with a school report instead. A report gives a predicted grade on the 1 to 7 scale, a brief comment and sometimes an effort grade. What it almost never gives is the distribution of lost marks across the five AI SL topics, which is the only thing that tells you where an hour a week should go. A student predicted a 4 might be losing everything in statistics and nothing in functions, or losing two marks in every topic through rounding. Those two students need completely different terms, and only the marked scripts distinguish them.

The second reason to insist on marked work is that it makes progress arguable. A student who drops eleven marks on a timed set in week one and six marks on a comparable set in week eight has moved, and you can see on which questions. A student whose marked sets show the same interpretation error in weeks one, four and eight has not moved, however well the lessons felt. That is an uncomfortable thing for a tutor to put on paper every week, and it is exactly why it is worth insisting on.

Keep the evidence in one place. Families who hold a dated folder of marked sets, draft comments and session notes are the ones who can walk into a parents' evening and ask a specific question. Families who hold only a feeling about whether things are improving tend to change tutor at the wrong moment, usually in February, when continuity matters more than anything else.

02

The Applications and Interpretation SL syllabus, by hours and by paper

AI SL is 150 taught hours: 120 on the five content topics and 30 on the toolkit and the exploration. The distribution is the single most useful fact about the course and the one students most often have not been told. Statistics and probability is the largest topic at 36 hours, which is almost a third of the content time. Functions follows at 31 hours, then calculus at 19, geometry and trigonometry at 18, and number and algebra at 16. A revision plan that gives equal time to all five is already misallocated.

Both papers are 90 minutes and each carries 40 per cent of the grade. Paper 1 is a sequence of shorter questions covering the whole syllabus; Paper 2 is a smaller number of extended questions that run across topics. There is no non-calculator paper in AI SL, which is a structural difference from AA that changes how practice should be organised. A graphic display calculator is assumed throughout, and a student who can run a chi-squared test from a frequency table in twenty seconds has time to think about the interpretation sentence that carries the mark.

The exploration carries the remaining 20 per cent. It is marked by the school against five published criteria and moderated by the IB, which means the mark your child sees on the draft is not necessarily the mark that reaches the final grade. That is worth understanding early, because it reframes what a tutor's comments are for: not to raise the school's internal mark, but to make the document defensible to a moderator who has never met the student.

The table below maps each topic to the hours the course allows it, what AI SL actually asks of it, and how far the calculator does the work. It is the planning document we build a term around.

03

Where AI SL marks actually go missing on a marked script

  • No interpretation sentence after a calculated value — the most common single loss
  • Statistical test conclusions written without the critical value or significance level
  • Early rounding carried through to a final answer short of three significant figures
  • Calculator output presented in place of method on a question that asks for working
  • Degrees and radians mixed inside one trigonometric question

Marked AI SL scripts fail in a small number of repeatable ways, and almost none of them are failures of understanding. The largest single category is the missing interpretation sentence. A student runs the regression, writes down the gradient, and stops. The mark was for saying what the gradient means in the context of the data, in a sentence, with units. A tutor can fix that in two sessions once the marked evidence shows it is happening, and cannot fix it at all while the only evidence is a grade.

The second category is statistical conclusions stated without the comparison that justifies them. A chi-squared value is calculated correctly and the conclusion is written as a bare assertion, with no reference to the critical value or the significance level, and no statement of what the null hypothesis was. The third is rounding drift: an intermediate value rounded early, carried forward, and an answer that is accurate to two significant figures where three were wanted. Over a full Paper 1 that pattern can cost more than any single topic.

Then there is calculator notation. Writing down what appeared on the screen is not working, and a question that asks for a method will not accept a screenshot in place of one. Students who have been taught to trust the device sometimes present no reasoning at all on a six-mark question. The reverse problem exists too, in students who migrated from AA SL and insist on doing by hand what AI SL expects the technology to do, running out of time in the process.

The fix for all four is the same, and it is dull: timed questions, marked honestly, logged by error type, repeated until the log stops showing the same line. The log is the deliverable. A student who can name their own three recurring errors before an exam is in a different position from one who has been told to be careful.

04

The mathematical exploration, criterion by criterion

The exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria, and the marks are not evenly spread. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries six marks on its own. Criteria A and B carry four each, and criteria C and D carry three each. A student polishing presentation while criterion E sits at two out of six is spending effort in the wrong place, and only a criterion-keyed comment sheet makes that visible.

The most common structural mistake is length. The guidance points to a concise document of roughly twelve to twenty pages, and students routinely produce twice that by moving raw data, calculator output and repeated calculations into the body. The remedy is an appendix and a stated aim in the first paragraph. The second most common is criterion C, personal engagement, which cannot be rescued by adding a sentence about why the topic is interesting. It is earned by independent choices visible in the work: data the student collected, a method the student selected, a direction the student changed after a result.

Criterion D, reflection, is the one Sharjah students most often lose cheaply. Reflection written as a single paragraph at the end reads as a conclusion, not as reflection. Reflection distributed through the document — after a result that did not behave as expected, after a model that fitted badly, after a decision to change approach — is what the criterion describes. A tutor's job here is to ask the question that produces the reflection, not to supply the paragraph.

The table below sets out what each criterion rewards, what it is worth, and what we most often see costing marks on a Sharjah student's first draft.

What twelve weeks of evidence looks like in practice

  • Weeks 1-2: timed diagnostic across all five topics, written diagnosis, deadline calendar
  • Weeks 3-6: one priority topic a week, marked set before each session, error log updated
  • Weeks 7-9: exploration comments against criteria A to E on the student's own draft
  • Weeks 10-12: full papers under timed conditions, reconciled against the mark scheme
  • End of term: a dated folder you keep, whether or not the tutoring continues

A term of AI SL support has a shape, and it is worth knowing the shape so you can tell whether a term has gone as it should. Weeks one and two are diagnostic. A timed question set covering all five topics, marked with method marks shown, plus a read of whatever exploration material exists. The output is a written diagnosis: two priority topics, three recurring error types, and a calendar working backwards from the school's internal deadlines.

Weeks three to six are the topic block. Each week one priority topic, one timed set on it, marked before the session and worked through during it. The session note records which error types reappeared. By week six the log either shows an error type dropping out or it does not, and if it does not, the approach changes rather than the hours increasing. This is the part of a term where a parent should be able to open the folder and see the same three error labels getting rarer.

Weeks seven to nine move to the exploration while the topic work continues at a lower intensity. The tutor reads the student's own draft, comments against the criteria, and asks the questions that generate criterion C and criterion D material. Weeks ten to twelve are mixed papers: full Paper 1 and Paper 2 attempts under timed conditions, marked line by line against the mark scheme, with the error log reviewed at the end of every session rather than at the end of the block.

Twelve weeks is not a guarantee of anything and no honest tutor will tell you otherwise. What it is, is a long enough period to know whether the marked evidence is moving. If it is, the same shape repeats with harder material. If it is not, the diagnosis was wrong and should be redone from a fresh timed set rather than defended.

06

What Sharjah families pay for DP mathematics support, and what comes back

Published rates for tutoring in the UAE are scarce, and most pages ranking for these searches quote none at all or quote in US dollars. The figures below are market rates in AED collected from providers' own published pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026. They are not IB Gram's prices; they are what the market around a Sharjah family looks like, so you can judge a quote against something.

Two things drive an AED figure more than anything else. The first is whether travel is in the hour. An in-home visit priced at AED 300 includes a drive from somewhere, and in the Sharjah-to-Dubai corridor that drive can be 45 minutes each way at six in the evening. The second is scarcity. A Sharjah family wanting AI SL specifically, rather than general DP maths, is drawing from a smaller pool than a family in Dubai Marina, and scarcity shows up in the rate before it shows up in the availability.

The column worth reading closely is not the rate; it is what comes back marked. A tutor at AED 150 who returns no marked work and a tutor at AED 280 who returns a marked set and a criterion-keyed comment sheet every week are not selling the same product, and comparing them on price per hour hides that completely. Ask any prospective tutor what you will physically hold at the end of four weeks, and compare the answers rather than the rates.

IB Gram does not publish a rate card on these pages. The honest reason is that the figure depends on level, subject scarcity and session length, and a number printed here would be wrong for most readers. The trial lesson is free and carries no card requirement, and the quote is given before any commitment, after the diagnostic has shown what is actually needed.

SPEA, your school's calendar, and why timing decides whether evidence helps

Private schools in Sharjah are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority. SPEA regulates private education in the emirate and, as the federal portal sets out, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a wider remit than inspection alone, and it is the reason your child's internal assessment calendar is not infinitely negotiable: the assessment methods sit inside an approved framework the school is working to.

The practical consequence for AI SL is about timing. The exploration has an internal submission date set by the school, usually with a first-draft date some weeks earlier, and the useful window for an outside reader is before the first draft goes in, not after the supervisor has commented on the final one. Families who come to us in the fortnight before final submission are asking for the one thing that cannot honestly be given: substantive change to a document that is nearly finished and must remain the student's own work.

The same timing logic applies to the mandatory UAE subjects. Across the country, private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. Those lessons sit inside the same timetable as AI SL and the same homework evening, so a realistic weekly plan has to account for them rather than pretend the DP block is the only thing happening.

A note on language this page will not use. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no permit, licence or recognition from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and anyone marketing tutoring in the UAE as carrying a regulator's blessing should be asked to produce the permit number. What we can tell you is what the regulators do, and what your child's school is working to.

08

Academic honesty on the exploration: the line a tutor does not cross

The exploration must be the student's own work, and the school's supervisor signs a declaration to that effect before it is submitted. That declaration is not a formality. An exploration found to contain material the student did not produce is an academic misconduct matter for the IB, and the consequence falls on the student, not on whoever helped. Any tutoring arrangement in this subject has to be built around that fact from the first session.

What a tutor may properly do is substantial. Teach the mathematics the student has chosen to use, including techniques not covered in class. Explain what each criterion actually rewards, in the criterion's own language. Read a draft the student has produced and say where criterion B notation is loose, where criterion D reflection is absent, where criterion E mathematics stops short of being developed. Ask the questions that make a student notice a limitation in their own data. Check a calculation. Point at a graph with unlabelled axes.

What a tutor may not do is equally clear. Choose the topic. Supply the data set. Add mathematics to the document. Rewrite sentences into the file. Produce a reflection the student then adopts. Edit a draft to the point where the voice is no longer the student's. There are operators in this market selling finished internal assessments to UAE families at four-figure prices, and a family who buys one is buying a misconduct finding with the student's name on it rather than a grade.

The practical test we use is simple: could the student defend every line of this document, in their own words, to their supervisor tomorrow? If the answer is no for any line, that line should not be there. A tutor who cannot describe where their own boundary sits, in those terms, is the wrong tutor for coursework regardless of what they charge.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Sharjah

Where a Sharjah family lives decides what time a session can start and how much slack there is in the week. These notes are about logistics rather than scenery, because logistics is what decides whether a weekly slot survives to March.

Al Majaz

Dense apartment blocks around Khalid Lagoon with a short run to the Al Taawun and Al Mamzar crossings. Families with children at Dubai schools are often not home before six, so AI SL slots here tend to settle at 6.30pm or later.

Al Nahda

Sits directly on the Dubai border next to Al Qusais, with the heaviest cross-border school traffic in the emirate. Evening slots work; a 4pm slot almost never survives a term. Weekend morning sessions are popular here for exploration work.

Al Taawun

Tower living beside Al Mamzar with the same Dubai commute as Al Nahda and slightly more parking friction. Students here often fit a session between arriving home and an evening activity, which argues for a fixed 60-minute slot rather than a flexible 90.

Al Khan

Coastal and central, close to Al Khan lagoon and the Sharjah Aquarium, with several Indian-curriculum and British schools within ten minutes. Shorter school runs mean a 5pm AI SL session is realistic, which is useful in the weeks before a mock.

Muwaileh

Inland and growing fast, next to University City and Al Zahia. Commutes are short but after-school clubs run late at the newer schools, so families here often split the week into one taught session and one shorter marking review.

Al Zahia

Masterplanned villa community beside City Centre Al Zahia with a young DP cohort and a short run to Muwaileh schools. A 5.30pm slot is usually safe, and the household is normally quiet enough for a 90-minute Paper 2 practice under timed conditions.

University City

Sharjah's academic cluster around the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Many DP students here have a parent on campus, which tends to mean homework supervision is strong and the gap is exam technique rather than content.

Al Qasimia

Older, central and well served by schools, with a short commute and heavy evening traffic around Al Wahda Street. Early-evening slots work, and the proximity of several schools means a shared tutor timetable across siblings is straightforward.

The older central and coastal districts, where a large share of students attend Indian-curriculum and British schools and a significant minority cross into Dubai daily. DP students from this cluster usually come to AI SL from an IGCSE or CBSE background rather than from MYP, which changes what the first marked diagnostic needs to test.

  • Sharjah American International School
  • Our Own English High School Sharjah
  • The Westminster School Sharjah
  • Al Maaref Private School
  • Delhi Private School Sharjah

Muwaileh, Al Zahia and University City

The inland growth corridor, and where most of Sharjah's international-curriculum capacity has opened in the last decade. DP students here are more likely to have come through MYP, so the written-method and timed-paper gaps are the ones that show up first on a marked AI SL question set.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • American School of Creative Science Sharjah
  • Wesgreen International School
  • GEMS Millennium School Sharjah
  • Scholars International Academy
  • Emirates National School Sharjah

Al Nahda, Al Qasimia and the Dubai border

The commuting belt. Students living here may attend a Sharjah school, a Dubai school, or a Sharjah school with half their friends in Dubai, and the resulting calendar clash is the main reason a weekly slot gets rescheduled. Fixed evening slots hold better than afternoon ones.

Schools are named here as the educational context Sharjah families are choosing within. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from, or relationship with any school, group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level, the school and the deadline

A short message naming the course — AI SL rather than AA SL, DP1 or DP2 — the school, and the next internal deadline that matters. The deadline is what shapes the plan, so an exploration date or a mock week is more useful to us than a general statement about struggling.

  2. 02

Sit a free trial lesson with a marked diagnostic

Sixty minutes with the tutor, built around a short timed question set covering all five AI SL topics. The set is marked with method marks shown and returned to you with a written note naming the two priority topics. The diagnostic is yours whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

Agree a plan read backwards from the school's dates

The tutor maps the term from the school's exploration and mock dates backwards, not from this week forwards. You see which weeks are topic work, which are exploration work and which are full papers, before anything is booked.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, with marked work each time

One or two sessions a week over live video. Questions are set in advance, marked before the lesson, and the lesson is spent on what the marking found. A written note goes out afterwards naming the error types that reappeared and the ones that did not.

  5. 05

Review the evidence at six weeks, not at the end

At week six we look at the error log with you. If the same labels are still appearing at the same rate, the diagnosis was wrong and the approach changes. Adding hours to a plan that is not moving is the most common way tutoring money gets wasted.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The marking is the product

Every session is bracketed by marked work: a set marked before it, a note written after it. That makes the tutoring arguable rather than impressionistic, and it gives you something to take to a parents' evening that is more specific than a feeling about progress.

AI SL specifically, not DP maths generally

Applications and Interpretation is not Analysis and Approaches with the hard bits removed. It is a statistics-weighted, technology-assumed course with its own command-term habits. A tutor matched to AI SL knows that the interpretation sentence is where the marks sit.

Sharjah timing taken seriously

Slots are set around the Dubai-border commute and the school run rather than around a tutor's driving route. Sessions can move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan and to morning slots in exam weeks without the week collapsing.

A stated boundary on coursework

Comments on the student's own draft, keyed to the criteria, and nothing added to the document. We say where the line is before the first session rather than after a supervisor asks a question. The student keeps authorship and keeps the defence.

Market rates published, our own quote given after the diagnostic

The AED bands on this page are attributed to the providers and the rate survey they came from, with the month they were read. Our own figure depends on level and scarcity, and it is quoted to you once the diagnostic shows what the work actually is.

Disclosed coverage rather than a vague promise

If no AI SL specialist is free in your window, we say so and give you the realistic alternative — a different slot, a different tutor, or a wait — rather than filling the seat with a general maths tutor and letting you discover the difference in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What does my child's Maths AI SL grade actually get calculated from?+

Three components. Paper 1 is 90 minutes of shorter questions across the whole syllabus and carries 40 per cent. Paper 2 is 90 minutes of extended questions and carries another 40 per cent. The mathematical exploration, marked by the school against five criteria and moderated by the IB, carries the remaining 20 per cent. Both papers assume a graphic display calculator; there is no non-calculator paper in AI SL. Those three figures are worth saying out loud to a DP1 student, because the exploration is the component most often treated as an afterthought and it is worth as much as half a paper.

Is Applications and Interpretation SL easier than Analysis and Approaches SL?+

It is different rather than lighter. AI SL carries less algebraic manipulation and no requirement for exact surd or radian answers, but it carries 36 hours of statistics against a much smaller statistics load in AA SL, and it expects fluent interpretation of real data in written sentences. Students who move from AA SL to AI SL expecting relief usually find the modelling and interpretation language unfamiliar. Students who are strong at reasoning in context and weaker at abstract manipulation generally do better in AI SL, which is the comparison worth making rather than a ranking of difficulty.

How long should the AI SL exploration be, and what goes in an appendix?+

The guidance points to a concise document of roughly twelve to twenty pages. Length itself is not marked, but criterion A rewards concision and a bloated document loses marks there and makes criterion B harder to read. Raw data tables, repeated identical calculations, calculator output and survey instruments belong in an appendix. The body should carry the aim, the mathematics, the results and the reflection. A first draft arriving at thirty pages is almost always four pages of argument surrounded by evidence that should have been moved.

What does a marked AI SL paper tell us that a school report does not?+

A report gives a grade on the 1 to 7 scale and a comment. A marked script gives the distribution of lost marks across the five topics and the error type behind each loss. Two students predicted a 4 can have completely different scripts: one losing everything in statistics and probability, the other losing two marks per topic to early rounding and missing interpretation sentences. Those two students need different terms. Without the marked evidence, a tutor is guessing, and a term spent on the wrong topic is a term you cannot get back before the May session.

Which Sharjah schools teach Applications and Interpretation rather than Analysis and Approaches?+

Most IB Diploma schools in Sharjah offer both routes, but a small cohort can mean only one is timetabled in a given year, and a few run AI at Standard Level only. The reliable way to find out is to ask the DP coordinator directly which mathematics courses are running for your child's year group and at which levels. It matters before option blocks are fixed, because a student needing AA HL for an engineering application cannot create the course after the timetable has closed, and a mid-year switch costs weeks.

Will AI SL be accepted if my child applies for engineering after the Diploma?+

Often not, and this is the single most consequential maths decision in the Diploma. Many engineering, mathematics, physics and computer science courses specify Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and some will accept AA SL but not Applications and Interpretation at either level. AI SL is widely accepted for business, economics, psychology, design and most social sciences. Check the stated entry requirements on each university's own admissions page for the year of entry, and check them before the DP1 option deadline rather than during the application year.

Can my child use the graphic display calculator in both AI SL papers?+

Yes. AI SL assumes a graphic display calculator in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, and the course is designed around that assumption. There is no non-calculator paper. What the calculator does not do is replace written method: a question asking for a method will not accept a screen reading as working, and students who present no reasoning on an extended question lose the method marks even when the final answer is right. Calculator fluency and written method are two separate skills and both need practising under timed conditions.

How much should we expect to pay for DP mathematics support around Sharjah?+

Market rates read in October 2026 run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit with travel inside the hour, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB Diploma subject specialist. Those bands come from providers' own published pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table. They are the market, not our price list. Compare what comes back marked rather than the hourly figure alone.

We commute into a Dubai school from Al Nahda. When can a session realistically start?+

For most Al Nahda and Al Taawun families the honest answer is 6.30pm or later on a weekday. The return leg down Al Ittihad Road in the early evening is unpredictable enough that a 4pm or 5pm booking tends to be cancelled or shortened within a few weeks, and a shortened session is worse than a later one. Families in Muwaileh, Al Zahia and University City with a local school run can usually hold a 5pm or 5.30pm slot. Weekend mornings work well for exploration sessions, which need a longer uninterrupted block.

How quickly should we expect to see grade movement in AI SL?+

No tutor can honestly put a date on a grade, and anyone who offers one is selling something other than teaching. What can be promised is visible movement in the marked evidence. A reasonable expectation is that by week six the error log shows at least one recurring error type appearing less often, and that a comparable timed set scores better than the diagnostic did. If neither has happened by week six, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan should be rebuilt from a fresh timed set rather than extended with more hours.

Can a tutor write my child's mathematical exploration?+

No, and no reputable tutor will. The exploration must be the student's own work and the school's supervisor signs a declaration confirming it. A tutor may teach the mathematics, explain what each criterion rewards, read a draft the student has produced and say where notation is loose or reflection is missing, and ask questions that help the student see a limitation in their own data. A tutor may not choose the topic, supply the data, add mathematics to the file or rewrite sentences into it. Operators selling finished internal assessments expose the student to a misconduct finding.

Does the exploration mark my child's school gives always stay the same?+

Not necessarily. The school marks the exploration against the five published criteria and the IB moderates a sample, which can move a cohort's marks up or down. That is one reason a tutor's comments aim at defensibility rather than at the internal number: a document that reads clearly to a moderator who has never met the student is the one that holds its mark. It is also why arguing about half a mark with a supervisor is usually less productive than making criterion E mathematics more thoroughly developed.

Can lessons move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan in Sharjah?+

Yes, and most families ask for it. School days shorten during Ramadan and the useful study window moves late, so sessions commonly shift to after Iftar or to a later morning slot at weekends. Because lessons run online there is no travel window to work around, which makes a temporary timetable change a matter of moving a calendar entry. We plan the Ramadan weeks in advance rather than cancelling them, because for a DP2 student the period often falls close to final coursework deadlines.

Does IB Gram send a maths tutor to our home in Sharjah?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending tutors to homes is a service we run only in India. All UAE tutoring is delivered one-to-one over live video. For AI SL that is a genuine advantage rather than a compromise: the tutor can share a screen, drive the same calculator your child uses, annotate a marked script live, and send the annotated file afterwards. It also means the pool is not limited to specialists who happen to live within driving distance of your address.

What happens if no AI SL specialist is free in the slot we want?+

We tell you, with the realistic options. Those are usually a different time in the same week, a tutor who covers AI SL but with a different teaching style, or a short wait until a slot opens. What we do not do is place a general mathematics tutor in an AI SL seat and let you work out the difference in week three. Coverage for Applications and Interpretation specifically is thinner than for DP mathematics generally, and saying so in advance is more useful than discovering it later.

Start with a marked paper, not a promise

If your child is taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL at a Sharjah school, the most useful next hour is a free trial lesson built around a timed question set that comes back marked. You will see which of the five topics is actually costing marks, which error types repeat, and what a term of work would be spent on, with dates read backwards from your school's own exploration and mock deadlines. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The marked diagnostic and the written note are yours to keep whether you book a second session or not.
