IB DP Economics HL Tutor in Sharjah

An IB DP economics HL tutor in Sharjah is priced by three things and three things only: who is teaching, how long the session runs, and how close the May session is. This page publishes the AED bands the Sharjah and Dubai market actually charges, names what pushes a quote from the bottom of a band to the top, and explains how one-to-one lessons are delivered live online to Al Majaz, Muwaileh, Al Nahda, University City and the east-coast towns under SPEA.

  • Paper 3 is 30 per cent of the HL grade and is HL-only
  • The IA portfolio is three commentaries of 800 words each
  • Lessons run live online over video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • AED figures on this page are market rates, not an IB Gram price list

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

What an Economics HL quote in Sharjah is actually made of

Parents in Sharjah ask the price first, and nobody in this market answers it. Of the agency and platform pages ranking for IB tutoring in the UAE, three publish no figure at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency no Sharjah family transacts in. So this page starts with the number. Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online in the UAE run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour. An IB or IGCSE specialist with Diploma-level subject depth runs roughly AED 200 to 450 and above. In-home one-to-one visits, travel included, are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500. Those are the bands published by providers and rate trackers in this market, not an IB Gram price list, and every one of them is a range rather than a price because the same hour of Economics teaching is worth different amounts depending on what it has to do.

Economics HL is unusual in how sharply its price curve bends. A Year 12 student who wants the four units sequenced and the diagrams drawn properly needs a competent subject teacher, and that sits at the lower end of the specialist band. A Year 13 student eight weeks from the May session who has to learn the HL policy paper from scratch, with a portfolio that has already been submitted, needs somebody who has marked that paper and can diagnose a script in ten minutes. That is a different hour and it is priced like one. Most of the cost variance families see between two quotes for the same subject is not a difference in quality claim. It is a difference in what the hour is being asked to do.

Sharjah adds its own arithmetic. The emirate's private schools are regulated by SPEA, the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and which, along with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That matters for a tutoring budget because the set of Sharjah schools running the full Diploma Programme is small. A large share of Sharjah Diploma candidates sit in Dubai classrooms and commute, from Al Nahda, Al Majaz and Al Khan in the morning and back through Al Ittihad Road in the afternoon. A tutor who has to be physically present in the room is competing with that commute for the same two hours of the evening, and the travel gets priced in whether the invoice itemises it or not.

This is where delivery format stops being a preference and starts being a line item. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Sharjah lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. The honest case for that is not that it is cheaper, although removing travel from the quote usually makes it so. The case is that a student in Muwaileh gets an Economics HL specialist who has taught Paper 3 rather than the best generalist willing to drive to Muwaileh at seven in the evening. The subject pool stops being a function of the map.

What follows is the full breakdown: the band table, the nine things that move a quote inside a band, the HL versus SL assessment split that determines how many hours you are actually buying, the way a Sharjah school calendar and Ramadan reshape the timetable, and what a tutor may and may not touch on an Economics commentary. Every AED figure carries its source. Every claim about SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education is traceable to the authority's own page, because a number without a source is worth nothing to a parent comparing three quotes.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Economics sits inside a Diploma that has to be budgeted as a whole. A family paying for HL Economics support in Year 13 is usually also paying for something else, so here is what each programme stage costs in hours rather than in adjectives.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Economics HL runs across both years: the four units are usually taught in sequence through Year 12, with the HL quantitative extensions and the policy paper weighted into Year 13. Internal deadlines for the three commentaries are set by the school, not the IB, which is why two Sharjah students in the same year group can be on completely different portfolio timelines.

Sharjah has a smaller DP cohort than Dubai, and several Sharjah families drive into Dubai or Ajman schools for the Diploma. For a tutoring plan that means two things: the subject teacher at school may be covering Economics alongside Business Management, and the evening window is short because the commute eats it. Online sessions at 7.30pm or 8.30pm GST are the slots that actually hold.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and Societies in MYP is the feeder for DP Economics, but it is assessed against four criteria on a 1-8 scale rather than by paper. Students arriving in DP1 from MYP are usually strong on investigation and weak on diagram discipline, because MYP never asked them to draw a correctly labelled market diagram under timed conditions. That gap is six to eight hours of work, not a term.

Several Sharjah schools run MYP without the full Diploma above it, so students transfer at Year 11 into a DP1 cohort in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Those transfers arrive mid-September having missed the first unit, and the economics diagram set is the first thing to rebuild. Cost-wise this is the cheapest intervention on the whole list and the one families most often skip.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Economics is syllabus 0455. It overlaps the DP introduction unit on supply, demand, elasticity and market failure, but stops well short of the DP's nine key concepts and its evaluation demands. A student with a strong 0455 grade still has to learn to write a 15-mark part (b) with a judgement in it. Pearson's International GCSE equivalent follows a comparable structure with different paper codes.

Most Sharjah families on the British track sit IGCSE in the Cambridge June series or the Pearson May/June series before deciding on HL Economics. Pearson's June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, which is after DP1 subject choices are usually locked. Families who want the IGCSE grade to inform the HL decision need to have that conversation in May.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Economics, for comparison

Some Sharjah schools offer A Level rather than the Diploma, and parents comparing the two want to know whether Economics is harder in one. The A Level goes deeper on micro theory of the firm; DP HL Economics goes wider across the global economy and adds the policy paper and a portfolio of three commentaries. The DP route costs more tutoring hours in Year 13 and fewer in Year 12.

The practical Sharjah point is university recognition, not difficulty. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track a student must show five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold has been published on a source we can cite, so verify the IB route on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Economics HL is the page, but the quote almost always covers more than one subject. These are the DP courses Sharjah families most often pair with it, with what each actually assesses and where the marks go missing.

Economics HL

Higher Level

Four units, nine key concepts, and three papers. Paper 1 is a 25-mark extended response, Paper 2 is a 40-mark data response, and Paper 3 is the HL-only policy paper with two compulsory questions. The portfolio of three commentaries carries 20 per cent. Marks are lost on evaluation, not on knowledge.

Economics SL

Standard Level

Same four units, no Paper 3, and the portfolio weighted up to 30 per cent. SL students lose marks in the same two places as HL students - unlabelled diagrams and part (b) answers that explain instead of judging - but have fewer marks to recover them from.

Business Management HL and SL

HL and SL

Frequently taken alongside Economics, and frequently confused with it in revision. Business Management rewards application to a named organisation; Economics rewards theory applied to a market. Students who revise them together tend to write business answers in an economics paper and lose the theory marks.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The usual maths partner for Economics. AI HL covers the statistical and modelling work that makes Paper 3 calculations straightforward: percentage change, index numbers, elasticity arithmetic and reading a regression output without panicking.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Chosen by Economics students heading for quantitative degrees. AA is heavier on calculus and proof and lighter on the applied statistics an Economics paper rewards, so AA students sometimes need the index-number and elasticity arithmetic taught separately.

Geography HL and SL

HL and SL

Shares the global economy material on trade, development and inequality, and shares the evaluation command terms. A student strong in Geography essays usually transfers that judgement writing into Economics part (b) answers faster than a student strong in Maths.

Global Politics HL and SL

HL and SL

Overlaps the fourth Economics unit on interdependence, trade blocs and intervention. The engagement activity rewards exactly the kind of sourced, dated evidence that an Economics commentary needs, so the two courses reinforce each other if they are revised deliberately.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Not a content overlap but a marks overlap. The Economics 15-mark part (b) and the Paper 3 policy recommendation are both argument-with-judgement tasks. Students who cannot structure a paragraph in English A rarely score well on evaluation in Economics.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

TOK asks how economic models can be knowledge if their assumptions are false, which is a question Paper 1 part (b) rewards directly. A student who has thought about the limits of ceteris paribus writes better evaluation than one who has memorised a definition of it.

Economics Internal Assessment coaching

HL and SL

Three commentaries of up to 800 words, each on a different unit, each built on a published news article from a different source, each engaging a different key concept. Coaching means article selection, diagram choice, criterion-by-criterion feedback and process discipline - never text supplied by anybody but the student.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a Sharjah family buys Economics HL support, with the price consequence of each stated plainly. All three are delivered as live one-to-one or small-group video sessions; none involve a tutor at a UAE address.

Weekly one-to-one through the year

One 60 or 90-minute session a week, running alongside the school's teaching order rather than ahead of it. This is the cheapest route per mark gained because it spreads the work across two years and the portfolio gets built on time instead of rescued. Families who start in DP1 typically buy fewer total hours than families who start in Year 13.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same slot each week in Gulf Standard Time
  • Tracks the school's unit order, including internal commentary deadlines
  • Diagram discipline built early, when it is cheap to build
  • Paused during school exam weeks rather than paid for and missed

Paper 3 and portfolio intensives

A block of sessions aimed at one component. The HL policy paper is the most common target because it is HL-only, worth 30 per cent, and frequently taught last. Intensives are priced at the top of the specialist band because they need somebody who can read a script and name the missing mark, not somebody who can re-teach a unit.

  • Six to ten sessions on Paper 3 technique and the quantitative extensions
  • Timed questions marked against the published criteria, returned annotated
  • Commentary feedback by criterion letter, on the student's own draft
  • Runs well in a school holiday or over a long weekend

Two-student pairing

Two students from the same year group and the same level sharing a session, which lowers the cost per family while keeping the group small enough that both get marked. Market small-group rates in this emirate sit well below one-to-one per student. Pairing only works where both students sit the same level, because HL Paper 3 cannot be taught to an SL student.

  • Same level, same school year, ideally the same school
  • Lower cost per family than one-to-one, higher than a tuition-centre class
  • Both scripts marked, both commentaries reviewed
  • Not offered across HL and SL together

What IB DP Economics HL tutoring costs in Sharjah, in AED

  • Budget general tutor, online: AED 45 to 150 per hour (EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52)
  • Qualified subject tutor, online: AED 150 to 300 per hour (Unitors IB from AED 200)
  • IB specialist, online: AED 200 to 450+ per hour (TutorChase AED 270; Bestimate 200 to 450+)
  • In-home one-to-one with travel: AED 180 to 500 per hour (Bestimate 180 to 350)
  • Premium named or examiner-level: AED 500 to 650+ per hour (BartyED AED 650)

An IB DP Economics HL tutor working online with a Sharjah family sits in the specialist band: roughly AED 200 to 450 and above per hour at market rates, with named or examiner-level tutors quoted above that. The budget end of the market, typically university students teaching general subjects, runs AED 45 to 150 an hour and does not reliably cover the HL policy paper. In-home one-to-one with travel included is quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour in this market. Monthly packages seen across UAE providers include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are published provider figures and rate-tracker bands as of October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

The table below splits the market by what is being bought rather than by who is selling it, because the single biggest driver of an Economics HL quote is component scope. A tutor teaching the four units in sequence is doing a different job from one marking Paper 3 scripts eight weeks out, and a portfolio coach working to criterion letters is doing a third. Families who ask for a price without naming the component get the middle of the band quoted at them, which is almost never the right number for their situation.

IB Gram's own position on price is deliberately not a table. Rates depend on the tutor matched, the level, the component and the session length, and the first lesson is free so that the comparison is made against a real session rather than a promise. What we will publish is the method: you see the tutor's subject and level before booking, you keep the same tutor week to week, and the rate is quoted per 60 minutes with no travel element, because there is no travel. Nothing on this page should be read as a guaranteed outcome at any price - no tutor at any rate can promise a grade, and anybody who does is selling something the IB does not let them deliver.

Nine things that move an Economics HL quote inside the band

A band is not a price. Two Sharjah families can be quoted AED 220 and AED 420 for the same subject in the same week and both quotes can be honest, because the hour is being asked to do different work. The nine levers below are the ones that actually move the number, ordered roughly by how much they move it. Component scope moves it most; the day of the week moves it least.

Timing is the lever families control and underuse. The pre-session window, when every Diploma candidate in the Gulf wants the same four evening slots, is when specialist availability is thinnest and quotes sit at the top of the band. The same tutor teaching the same material in October has more slots and less marking backlog. Families who buy Economics HL support in DP1 at the lower end of the band and keep it running usually spend less in total than families who buy nothing until February and then buy everything at once.

Level is the second lever, and it is not a small one. Paper 3 is HL-only and carries 30 per cent, which means an HL quote is buying a component an SL quote does not contain. The pool of tutors who can mark Paper 3 against the published criteria is markedly smaller than the pool who can teach the four units, and scarcity shows up in the rate. This is the one place where paying the specialist band is clearly the cheaper choice: a generalist teaching Paper 3 badly costs the full hourly rate and produces nothing a marker rewards.

The HL assessment split, and how many hours it implies

Buying tutoring without knowing the assessment split is how families end up paying for the wrong hours. At Higher Level, Economics is examined by Paper 1 at 20 per cent, Paper 2 at 30 per cent, Paper 3 at 30 per cent and the Internal Assessment portfolio at 20 per cent. At Standard Level there is no Paper 3, and the portfolio rises to 30 per cent with Paper 1 at 30 and Paper 2 at 40. That single structural difference is why HL and SL tutoring plans should not look alike, and why an HL student who has had no Paper 3 teaching has a 30 per cent hole regardless of how well the units went.

Paper 1 is a single extended response chosen from three, worth 25 marks, with a 10-mark part (a) and a 15-mark part (b). Part (a) is explanation with diagrams; part (b) is judgement. Students routinely score well on (a) and poorly on (b), because (b) is the only place the paper asks them to decide something and defend it. Paper 2 is data response, 40 marks, built on an unseen text and figures, and rewards reading the extract properly far more than it rewards recall. Paper 3 is the HL policy paper: two compulsory questions, each 30 marks, mixing calculation with a policy recommendation that has to be defended against its own trade-offs.

The hours follow from that. Diagram and terminology work is cheap and fast and lifts Paper 1 part (a) and Paper 2 together. Evaluation work is slower, because it is a writing habit rather than a fact set, and it lifts every paper and the commentaries at once. Paper 3 is the most teachable component on the list in the sense that its question structure repeats, and the least teachable in the sense that it needs somebody who has marked it. A sensible HL plan weights roughly a third of its hours onto Paper 3 and the portfolio combined, because together they are half the grade.

The three commentaries, by criterion letter

  • Three commentaries, 800 words each, three different units, three different key concepts
  • Each commentary marked out of 14 across five criteria; 45 marks in the portfolio
  • Articles must come from different published sources the student selects
  • Feedback is given by criterion letter on the student's own draft, nothing more

The Economics Internal Assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries, each a maximum of 800 words, each built on a published news article the student finds, each drawn from a different unit of the syllabus and engaging a different key concept. Each commentary is marked out of 14 against five criteria - diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, key concept, and evaluation - and the portfolio carries 45 marks in total once the rubric requirements are counted. Not one competitor page in this market names a single criterion letter, which is why most students arrive at their first commentary knowing the word limit and nothing else.

Where marks go is predictable. Diagram marks are lost to unlabelled axes, missing units and a diagram pasted in without being referred to in the text. Terminology marks are lost to definitions that sit in a block at the start instead of being used where they are needed. Application and analysis marks are lost to commentary that summarises the article rather than explaining the economics behind it. Key concept marks are lost to a concept named in the title and never used again. Evaluation marks are lost to a final paragraph that lists advantages and disadvantages without reaching a judgement. Every one of those is diagnosable from a draft in fifteen minutes.

The boundary matters here more than anywhere else on the page. A tutor reads the student's own draft and gives feedback against the criteria: this diagram is not referred to in the text, this key concept is decorative, this evaluation has no judgement. A tutor does not supply sentences, choose the article on the student's behalf, or hand back a rewritten version. Nobody at IB Gram will write, redraft or supply text for an assessed commentary, and no reputable provider should - one operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, which is an academic-integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger that puts the student's whole Diploma at risk, not the provider's.

05

Sharjah's school calendar, Ramadan and when the hours actually happen

A tutoring budget that ignores the calendar overspends. Sharjah Diploma candidates sit the May session, and the work that moves a grade happens in the twelve weeks before it - which in the Gulf collides with Ramadan in most recent years and with a shortened school day. Sessions that worked at 5pm in November do not work at 5pm during Ramadan, and families who do not re-plan simply lose those weeks and then buy them back at pre-session prices.

The practical rebuild is straightforward. During Ramadan, post-Iftar sessions hold far better than late-afternoon ones, and online delivery is what makes a 9pm or 9.30pm GST slot possible at all. Across the rest of the year, the Sharjah constraint is the Dubai school run: a student at a Dubai campus living in Al Nahda or Al Majaz is not realistically available before 7pm on a weekday. Saturday mornings are the most reliable recurring slot in this emirate for anything that needs ninety minutes or more, which is to say for every timed Paper 3 question.

Counting backwards from the session is the discipline nobody in this SERP teaches. The portfolio deadlines are internal and set by the school, so they sit earlier than parents expect, often with the final commentary due before the mock window. Mocks then act as the real diagnostic, and the eight weeks after mocks are the only window in which a Paper 3 technique block changes anything. IB session and results dates are not published on this page because ibo.org blocks automated checking and we will not restate an unverified date - confirm every IB date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly. SPEA, KHDA and why a Sharjah family has two regulators

Sharjah's private schools are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate. SPEA and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge both approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so in Sharjah the regulator's reach goes beyond inspection into what a school may teach and charge. Dubai's private schools answer to KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to ADEK, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah to the federal Ministry of Education, which plays a supervisory role in those three emirates.

The Sharjah complication is that a large number of families live under SPEA and school their children under KHDA. That split explains two things parents find baffling. First, the inspection report they read may be published by a different authority from the one that regulates their emirate, so comparing a Sharjah school's rating to a Dubai school's is not comparing like with like. Second, term dates and assessment calendars follow the school's regulator, not the family's address, which is why two neighbours in Al Nahda can be on different half-term weeks.

The federal baseline sits underneath all of it: private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That is the rule behind every emirate's mandatory-subject requirement, and it means an Economics HL student is also carrying UAE-mandated subjects that compete for the same study hours. IB Gram holds no permit, accreditation or endorsement from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and any provider telling you otherwise should be asked to show the permit number.

Is your Economics tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

  • Permit: MoHRE private tuition work permit, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Cost and validity: granted free of charge for two years
  • Apply: MoHRE smart app, website or e-services, stated two working days
  • Ask any tutor whether they hold it, and ask any agency whether it checks

This is the question with the clearest answer and the least coverage. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The official route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated two-working-day completion time and no listed fee.

Two things follow for a Sharjah parent comparing quotes. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws - no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted at you by anybody, and a provider quoting one is guessing. And a tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: a training institute in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is a specific document issued to a specific entity. Nobody should describe themselves using a regulator's name as a credential without producing the number.

There is one more boundary worth knowing because it protects your child, not us. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That is press-reported rather than read off the policy document, so verify it against current ADEK material before relying on it. The practical rule is the same in any emirate: do not hire your child's own classroom teacher privately, however convenient it looks.

Online, in-home and group in this emirate - the comparison that decides the budget

Home tutoring is a real market in Sharjah and the question deserves a real answer rather than a sales line. In-home one-to-one in the UAE is quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, and monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions appear on provider pages in this market. What that money buys is a tutor in the room and a tutor who had to get there. In Muwaileh, where a visiting tutor can run back-to-back sessions in one community, the travel overhead is small. In Khor Fakkan or Kalba it is prohibitive, and in Al Nahda at 6pm it is unpredictable in a way no price can fix.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. That is not a hedge; it is the model. Home visits are a service we run only in India, and every UAE page on this site says the same thing. Sharjah lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week. The argument for it is specific rather than general: Economics HL Paper 3 has a small specialist pool anywhere in the world and an almost non-existent one inside a 20-minute drive of any given Sharjah address. Online delivery replaces the question of who is nearby with the question of who can mark the paper.

The format also changes what a session can contain. A shared screen holds the extract, the diagram and the marked script at once; a student can be given a timed Paper 3 question, hand it in as a photograph, and get it back annotated before the next session. None of that depends on being in the room, and all of it depends on the tutor having marked the component before. Group classes at a tuition centre remain the cheapest option per hour in this market and the weakest fit for a student who is the only Economics HL candidate in their year group, which in Sharjah is common.

Where Economics HL marks are actually lost, by topic

  • Diagrams: label axes and units, mark the shift, refer to it in the text
  • Command terms: evaluate means judge, not list
  • HL extensions: multiplier, Phillips curve, Gini, tariff and exchange-rate arithmetic
  • Portfolio: three units, three sources, three key concepts, rubric requirements met

Economics HL candidates rarely fail on knowledge. They lose marks on four repeatable, diagnosable habits, and a tutor who knows the component can name which one is costing a given student their grade from two marked scripts. The first is diagram discipline: axes unlabelled, units missing, the new equilibrium not marked, and the diagram never referred to in the prose. In a 10-mark part (a) that is a straightforward loss of marks that cost nothing to secure.

The second is command-term blindness. Explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss and to what extent are not synonyms, and a student who answers all of them the same way scores the explanation marks and forfeits the judgement marks. The 15-mark part (b) and the Paper 3 recommendation both require a position taken and defended against its own trade-offs. The third is the HL quantitative extensions: the Keynesian multiplier, the Phillips curve, the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient, tariff, quota and subsidy calculations, terms of trade and exchange-rate arithmetic. These are mechanical and highly scorable, and they are routinely taught last and revised least.

The fourth is the portfolio, which sits at 20 per cent of the HL grade and is the only component where the student controls the conditions entirely. Commentaries that summarise an article instead of applying theory to it, that name a key concept without using it, or that miss the rubric requirements on unit coverage and source variety, lose marks that were available for free. A plan that fixes diagrams, command terms, the HL extensions and the portfolio in that order tends to move more marks per hour than one that re-teaches the syllabus from unit one.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Sharjah

Sharjah is not one tutoring market. The distance to a Dubai school gate, the direction of the morning commute and the school's own calendar change what time a session can start, and that in turn changes what an hour costs.

Al Majaz

Central, dense, and heavily commuter. Families here often hold Dubai school places, so the student is home late and the realistic first slot is 7.30pm GST or later. An online session starts on time; a visiting tutor arrives when Al Ittihad Road allows.

Al Nahda

Effectively on the Dubai border and the single most Dubai-dependent part of Sharjah for schooling. The commute is short in distance and long in minutes. Weekend morning sessions are easier to hold here than weekday evening ones, especially in exam term.

Muwaileh

Home to several of the emirate's larger private campuses and a big share of its IGCSE and Diploma cohort. Enough students in one postcode that a visiting tutor can run back-to-back sessions, which is why in-home quotes here sit lower in the band than on the east coast.

University City and Al Zahia

Newer housing next to the university cluster, with a mixed school set across Sharjah and Dubai. Postgraduate availability locally pushes down the price of general maths help and does nothing for Economics HL, which has almost no local specialist pool.

Al Khan and Al Mamzar side

Coastal, close to the Dubai boundary, and a short run to Dubai schools. Families here compare Sharjah and Dubai tutoring prices directly because they already shop in both emirates, which makes them the most price-aware part of this market.

Al Qasimia and Halwan

Older established districts with a strong CBSE and British presence and a smaller Diploma cohort. Economics HL candidates here are usually the only one or two in their year group taking it, which is exactly the case for one-to-one rather than a group class.

Khor Fakkan and Kalba

Sharjah's east-coast exclaves, still under SPEA, and roughly two hours from the city by road. No realistic in-home specialist market exists here at any price. Online delivery is not the cheaper option on this coast; it is the only option.

Tilal City and Sharjah Garden City

Outlying new communities with long school runs in both directions. Evening slots are tight and tend to settle at 8.30pm GST. Saturday morning is the most reliable recurring slot for a two-hour Paper 3 clinic.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sharjah

Sharjah city and Muwaileh

The emirate's main private-school concentration, regulated by SPEA, spanning British, Indian and American curricula with a smaller IB presence than Dubai. Students we support attend schools across this cluster; naming them is context for how the market works, not a claim of any relationship.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • Wesgreen International School
  • The American School of Creative Science, Muwaileh
  • Delhi Private School Sharjah
  • Our Own English High School, Sharjah
  • Scholars International Academy
  • Emirates National School, Sharjah

Al Nahda, Al Khan and the Dubai boundary

Families living in Sharjah with school places in Dubai or Ajman. The student's regulator is KHDA while the family's emirate regulator is SPEA, which confuses inspection reports and term dates in equal measure. Schedule around the school's calendar, not the emirate's.

  • GEMS Our Own Indian School
  • Australian International School
  • Sharjah American International School
  • The International School of Creative Science

East coast: Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Dibba Al-Hisn

SPEA-regulated but physically separate from the rest of the emirate, with a small private-school set and effectively no Diploma specialist tutoring market. Every Economics HL student we have supported on this coast has been taught over video, because the alternative is a four-hour round trip.

  • Khor Fakkan Private School
  • Kalba Private School

Schools are named as context for the Sharjah education market. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

Say whether the priority is the four units, Paper 2 technique, the HL policy paper or the portfolio, and say which level. Component scope is the biggest driver of what the hour costs and of which tutors are a sensible match, so naming it in the first message saves a wasted trial lesson.

  2. 02

See the tutor's subject and level before you book

You see who is teaching, at what level, and which components they have taught before the first session is scheduled. For Economics HL that means confirming Paper 3 and portfolio experience specifically, because a tutor can be strong on the four units and have never marked the policy paper.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

The first lesson is free and is used as a diagnostic rather than a sales call. Bring a marked script or a commentary draft if there is one. By the end of it you should have a named weakness and a count of sessions, not a brochure. There is no card requirement and no commitment attached.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the school run and Ramadan

Sharjah evenings are short. Pick a recurring slot in Gulf Standard Time that survives a Dubai commute, and agree in advance how it shifts during Ramadan, when post-Iftar sessions hold far better than late-afternoon ones. A slot that moves every week is the main reason tutoring plans quietly stop.

  5. 05

Review against marked work, not impressions

Progress is read off annotated scripts and criterion-level commentary feedback, not off how the sessions felt. Agree at the start what gets marked and how often, and ask whether marking time sits inside the quoted rate. If after a few weeks the marked work is not moving, change the tutor rather than adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The AED numbers are on the page

Three of the six ranking providers in this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars. Every band on this page is in AED, attributed to the provider or rate tracker that published it, and dated October 2026. You can argue with a sourced number; you cannot plan against a withheld one.

Component-level matching, not subject-level

Economics HL is four jobs: units, Paper 2 technique, the HL policy paper and the portfolio. We match on the component you need rather than on the subject name, because the tutor who sequences the four units well is not automatically the one who can diagnose a Paper 3 script.

One tutor, kept

The same tutor week to week, so the diagram habits, the command-term work and the commentary history accumulate instead of restarting. If the match is wrong you change tutor once and keep the history; what you do not do is rotate through a pool and explain the student again every month.

The academic-honesty line is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on the student's own work. Nobody supplies text for a commentary, an Extended Essay or a TOK essay. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments; that is a malpractice trigger that falls on the student, which is exactly why the boundary is published here.

Online because of the subject, not as a compromise

The specialist pool for an HL policy paper is small everywhere and effectively absent within driving distance of most Sharjah addresses, and non-existent in Khor Fakkan and Kalba. Live one-to-one video removes the map from the matching problem. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all.

Regulators explained, never borrowed

SPEA, KHDA, ADEK and MoHRE are described on this page with their own published wording and linked to their own pages. IB Gram claims no permit, accreditation, licence or partnership from any of them, and neither should any provider that cannot show you the number.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP Economics HL tutor cost per hour in Sharjah?+

Market rates for an IB specialist working online in this market run roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, with premium named tutors quoted higher - one provider publishes AED 650. A qualified subject tutor without Diploma-level component depth sits nearer AED 150 to 300, and budget general tutors run AED 45 to 150. In-home visits with travel are quoted at AED 180 to 500. Those bands are published provider and rate-tracker figures as of October 2026, not an IB Gram price list. Our own rate depends on the tutor, level, component and session length, and the first lesson is free so you compare against a real session.

Why is Economics HL quoted higher than Economics SL in Sharjah?+

Because HL contains a component SL does not sit. Paper 3, the policy paper, is Higher Level only and carries 30 per cent of the grade: two compulsory questions worth 30 marks each, mixing calculation with a defended policy recommendation. The pool of tutors who have actually marked Paper 3 against the published criteria is much smaller than the pool who can teach the four units competently, and that scarcity is what you are paying for. An HL quote that matches an SL quote is usually a signal that Paper 3 is not covered.

Does IB Gram send an Economics tutor to our home in Sharjah?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE - that is a service we run only in India. Sharjah lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week. The in-home market does exist here and is quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel, and for a common subject in a dense community like Muwaileh it can work well. For an HL policy paper, the specialist you need is unlikely to live within a 20-minute drive of any particular Sharjah address, and on the east coast nobody does.

What exactly does the Economics Internal Assessment portfolio involve?+

Three commentaries, each a maximum of 800 words, each based on a published news article the student selects, each drawn from a different unit of the syllabus and engaging a different key concept. Each commentary is marked out of 14 across five criteria - diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, key concept and evaluation - and the portfolio carries 45 marks in total once the rubric requirements are counted. At HL it is 20 per cent of the grade; at SL it rises to 30 per cent. Most marks are lost to summarising the article instead of applying theory to it.

Can a tutor help with my child's Economics commentaries without crossing a line?+

Yes, within a boundary that should be stated rather than assumed. A tutor can teach the criteria, explain what a key concept has to do in a commentary, show how a diagram earns its marks, and give criterion-by-criterion feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor must never supply sentences, rewrite a draft, or choose and summarise the article. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright; under IB rules that exposes the student to a malpractice finding affecting their whole Diploma, not just one grade.

How many Economics HL sessions does a Sharjah student usually need?+

It depends almost entirely on when you start. A DP1 student taking one weekly session alongside the school's teaching order typically uses 25 to 30 sessions across the year and buys fewer total hours than a DP2 student who starts in February. A targeted block is smaller: six to eight sessions to repair diagrams and terminology, eight to twelve for Paper 3 technique, three per commentary for portfolio work. A final eight-week programme runs 16 to 24 sessions and is the most expensive way to buy the same marks.

Which Sharjah areas do your Economics tutors cover?+

All of them, because lessons are delivered over live video rather than by road. In practice we work with students in Al Majaz, Al Nahda, Al Khan, Muwaileh, University City, Al Zahia, Al Qasimia, Halwan, Tilal City and the east-coast towns of Khor Fakkan and Kalba. What changes by area is not availability but timing: a student at a Dubai school living in Al Nahda is rarely free before 7pm on a weekday, while a Muwaileh student at a local campus can often take a 5.30pm slot.

Who regulates private schools in Sharjah, and does that affect tutoring?+

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and along with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge it approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. It does not regulate private tutors; that sits with MoHRE through the private tuition work permit. The practical effect for a Sharjah family is calendar confusion rather than cost: if your child attends a Dubai school, the term dates, assessment calendar and inspection report all follow KHDA while you live under SPEA.

Do private tutors in Sharjah need a permit from the government?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers at government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted as invented. Apply through the MoHRE app, website or e-services.

Is the HL policy paper really worth paying a specialist rate for?+

On the arithmetic, usually yes. Paper 3 is 30 per cent of the HL grade, it exists only at HL, and its question structure repeats enough that technique transfers quickly once somebody who has marked it shows the student what earns the marks. A generalist teaching it badly costs the same hourly rate and produces answers that show calculation without units and recommendations without defended trade-offs. If your budget forces a choice, spending it on Paper 3 and the portfolio covers half the grade between them.

How do sessions work during Ramadan and the Sharjah school run?+

They move, deliberately, and they are agreed in advance rather than cancelled week by week. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots at around 9pm or 9.30pm Gulf Standard Time hold far better than late afternoon, and online delivery is what makes that time workable at all. Outside Ramadan, the Sharjah constraint is the commute: students at Dubai schools living in Al Nahda, Al Majaz or Al Khan are usually free from 7.30pm. Saturday mornings are the most reliable recurring slot for anything needing ninety minutes, which includes every timed Paper 3 question.

What should I send when asking for an Economics HL tutoring quote?+

Four things, and the quote gets sharper immediately. The level, HL or SL. The component you want covered - units, Paper 2 technique, Paper 3 or the portfolio. The school's internal deadlines for the three commentaries, because those sit earlier than families expect. And a recent piece of marked work: a mock script or a commentary draft with the teacher's comments. Without the marked work, any provider is guessing at the diagnosis, and a guessed diagnosis is how families buy the wrong hours at the right price.

My child is eight weeks from the May session with no Paper 3 practice. Is it too late?+

It is late, not too late, and the plan has to change shape. Eight weeks will not re-teach the four units, so it should not try. It will cover Paper 3 structure, the HL quantitative extensions - multiplier, Phillips curve, Gini, tariff and exchange-rate arithmetic - and timed questions marked against the criteria, because those are mechanical and scorable. Expect scarcity pricing at the top of the specialist band in this window. Nobody can promise a particular grade from eight weeks, and any provider who does is describing something the IB does not allow them to deliver.

Are IB results recognised for university entry in the UAE, and does tutoring affect that?+

Recognition runs through Ministry of Education equivalency, which is a process the ministry operates and no tutoring provider performs or influences. On the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold has been published on a source we are willing to cite, so verify the IB route on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority. Tutoring is never a requirement for equivalency.

Can two Sharjah students share Economics HL sessions to lower the cost?+

Yes, where both sit the same level and the same school year, and ideally the same school so the internal deadlines align. Small-group rates in this market sit well below one-to-one per student, so a pairing is the clearest way to reduce cost per family without dropping to a tuition-centre class. The constraint is real: HL Paper 3 cannot be taught usefully to an SL student sitting in the same session, so we do not pair across levels. Both students' scripts still get marked individually.

Start with the diagnosis, then the number

The sensible order for a Sharjah family is diagnosis first, price second. Book the free trial lesson, bring a marked Paper 2 script or a commentary draft, and let an Economics HL specialist name which of the four habits is costing the marks: diagrams, command terms, the HL quantitative extensions, or the portfolio. From that you get a component, a session count and a quote you can compare against the AED bands published on this page. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week, from Al Majaz to Khor Fakkan. No home visits, no promised grade, and no number we are not willing to source.
