Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

A Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 tutor in Ras Al Khaimah works with your child live over video, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. This page is written around a timeline rather than a sales pitch: how to read where your child is now from a mock script, what the two papers will demand of them on the day, and what the weeks in between can realistically change. Ras Al Khaimah has few 0478 specialists, so the honest planning matters more here.

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 each run 1 hour 45 minutes for 75 marks
  • No coursework in 0478, so the whole grade sits in two sittings
  • Pseudocode is examined on paper, whatever language the school teaches
  • Sessions run live over video, not at a Ras Al Khaimah address

Where your child is now, and how many weeks are left

Most families arrive at this page with a date in mind and a vague sense of trouble. The date is a series, usually June. The trouble is a mock result, a comment in a report, or a child who says computer science is fine while quietly avoiding the programming questions. The useful first move is not to buy lessons. It is to work out precisely where the student is, precisely what the papers will ask in June, and then to be honest about what the number of weeks between those two points can change.

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 makes that arithmetic unusually clear, because the assessment has no hiding places. Two papers, each one hour forty-five minutes, each seventy-five marks, each exactly half the grade. Paper 1 Computer Systems covers the first six syllabus topics: data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and its uses, and automated and emerging technologies. Paper 2 Algorithms, Programming and Logic covers the remaining four: algorithm design and problem solving, programming, databases, and Boolean logic. There is no coursework and no project, so nothing is banked before the day.

What that structure means in practice is that the two papers have completely different time constants. Paper 1 is largely recall and explanation with a defined body of content; a motivated student can move it substantially in eight weeks of disciplined work, because the questions reward precise knowledge and the precise knowledge is finite. Paper 2 is skill. Writing an algorithm, dry-running it in a trace table, spotting an off-by-one error, completing a truth table under time pressure: these improve with repetition over months, not with revision over weeks. A family with ten weeks and a weak Paper 2 needs to know that before they spend anything.

Ras Al Khaimah sharpens the problem. The emirate's private sector is small and regulated by its own Department of Knowledge, which under the federal framework approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods here. A small sector means computer science is typically one set taught by one person, who may also be covering ICT and running the school network. Parents in Al Nakheel and Khuzam tell us the same story: the teaching is willing, the subject knowledge is real, and there is simply no capacity for one student to get twenty minutes a week of supervised algorithm writing.

So the honest proposition is this. A specialist who has marked hundreds of 0478 scripts is unlikely to live within driving distance of Al Rams or Digdaga, and searching for one locally is searching a list of two or three people. Over live video the same specialist is available on a Wednesday at six, with your child's own pseudocode on a shared screen and the trace table filled in together. The rest of this page is the detail: how to read the mock, what each paper demands, what eight or twenty or fifty weeks can do, and what the market charges for the privilege.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Computing qualifications in the UAE come in versions that look alike and assess very differently. Below are the four stages and variants a Ras Al Khaimah family meets, with what each demands and how it plays out in a small cohort where one teacher usually covers all of them.

0478Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science

Ten topics across two written papers of equal weight. Paper 1 Computer Systems examines data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and its uses, and automated and emerging technologies. Paper 2 Algorithms, Programming and Logic examines algorithm design and problem solving, programming, databases and Boolean logic. Programming skill is developed in class and then examined on paper in pseudocode, which is the single structural fact most families and some students have never been told.

Where it runs in Ras Al Khaimah it is usually a single set. The teacher often also covers ICT and sometimes supports the school's own systems, so sustained one-to-one algorithm supervision is not realistically available in school hours. That is the specific gap one-to-one support fills here, rather than a general claim about teaching quality.

Computer Science, 9-1 graded variant

Cambridge issues a numerically graded version of IGCSE Computer Science alongside the lettered code. The syllabus content, the two papers and the examined skills are identical; what differs is the reported grade scale. Knowing which code is on the statement of entry matters for one practical reason: a target expressed as a grade 6 and a target expressed as a B are not the same statement, and a revision plan built on the wrong one is built on an assumption.

Centres in the UAE use both codes depending on their reporting conventions. A thirty-second question to the exams officer settles which applies, and it is worth asking before any conversation with a school or a tutor about predicted grades.

Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology

The applied neighbour, and a genuinely different subject. ICT assesses practical competence with documents, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and web authoring through practical papers alongside a theory paper, rather than algorithmic thinking through pseudocode. A student who likes building things with software may do far better here; a student who likes working out why a program behaves as it does belongs in 0478. Families regularly confuse the two because both are often taught by the same person.

Several campuses in the emirate offer ICT rather than Computer Science, or offer both in the same option block so only one is possible. If a student has been allocated the subject that fitted the timetable, that is worth discovering in Year 9 rather than in the first Year 10 assessment.

9618Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Computer Science

The post-16 continuation, with substantially deeper theory and a programming project at A Level. Data structures, abstract data types, object-oriented programming, assembly language and computational thinking all arrive at once. Students who reached a good 0478 grade on Paper 1 recall alone find the step severe, because the post-16 course is weighted towards exactly the algorithmic skill that Paper 2 was measuring and they quietly avoided.

Post-16 computer science provision is thin in the northern emirates. For a student likely to continue, the Paper 2 skills built now are the ones that matter in eighteen months, which changes how a Year 10 year should be spent even when the Year 11 grade looks safe.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is the set of entries a Ras Al Khaimah computing student and their timetable neighbours actually sit, with codes as printed on a statement of entry. Each is a separate qualification with its own assessment pattern.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, 75 marks each. Paper 1 is content: data representation, transmission, hardware, software, the internet, emerging technologies. Paper 2 is skill: algorithms, programming in pseudocode, single-table databases with SQL, and Boolean logic. Marks leak on trace tables, on pseudocode syntax drift and on explanations that name a component without saying what it does.

Computer Science, 9-1 graded variant

Single tier

The numerically graded version of the same qualification. Identical content, identical papers, identical examined skills; only the reported scale differs. Confirm the code on the statement of entry before setting a target grade, because translating between the two scales by guesswork is how a revision plan ends up aimed at the wrong place.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Single tier

Practical papers on documents, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and web authoring alongside a theory paper. Rewards software competence and accuracy under time pressure rather than algorithmic reasoning. A student failing 0478 Paper 2 while enjoying building things is often in the wrong one of these two subjects, and the time to find out is Year 9.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Listed because 0478 Paper 2 leans on number work that the Extended tier reinforces: binary and hexadecimal conversion, place value, logical reasoning and precision with sequences. Extended also keeps A Level Computer Science realistically open, where a Core entry narrows the post-16 route without anyone announcing it.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

Relevant where a student is heading towards computer science or engineering at a university that expects strong mathematics. Not required for 0478 itself. Worth considering ahead of a second humanity if the destination is quantitative, because the step into post-16 computing is mathematical as much as it is technical.

Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

The common pairing for students heading to engineering or computer systems. Shares a specific habit with 0478: precision in units, prefixes and significant figures, where a correct method with a sloppy final line still loses the mark. Students weak at that precision show it in both subjects at once.

Design and Technology (0445)

Single tier

Included because it is the other subject that attracts students who like building, and because it occupies similar option blocks. A student choosing between 0478 and a making subject should be choosing on whether they enjoy reasoning about systems or producing artefacts, not on which sounds more employable.

Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Frequently paired with computing by students who imagine a technology career with a commercial edge. Case-based and command-word driven, so the habits it builds are argumentative rather than algorithmic. Worth knowing that it will not reinforce anything on Paper 2.

English as a First Language (0500)

Single tier

Relevant to 0478 more than families expect. Paper 1 marks are lost on explanations that identify without explaining, which is a writing failure as much as a knowledge one. A student who cannot develop a point in two sentences loses marks across every topic on the paper.

Economics (0455)

Single tier

Another common pairing, included for completeness on a commerce-and-computing timetable. Its eight-mark evaluation questions demand structured judgement, a different skill from the precise technical explanation 0478 rewards, so a student strong in one is not automatically strong in the other.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of 0478 support, matched to how many weeks a family actually has. Everything is one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India.

Long-run weekly work from Year 10

A fixed hour a week across the two years, with algorithm writing supervised in the session and one short programming task set between sessions. This is the only shape that genuinely builds Paper 2, because dry-running code and spotting your own logic errors are habits laid down by repetition. A student who starts here rarely needs a panic block later.

  • One algorithm written and dry-run in a trace table every session
  • Pseudocode syntax drilled until it is automatic under time pressure
  • Paper 1 topics covered in short recall blocks rather than whole lessons
  • A running log of the student's recurring logic errors, reviewed monthly

An eight to twelve week block before the series

The realistic shape for a family that arrives in the spring. The split is deliberate and uneven: most of the time goes to Paper 1 content, because that is what weeks can actually move, with Paper 2 work concentrated on the highest-yield skills, trace tables, truth tables and standard algorithm patterns rather than on general programming fluency.

  • Both papers sat to time at least twice, marked within 48 hours
  • Paper 1 topics prioritised by what the mock script shows is missing
  • Trace tables and truth tables drilled as technique, not taught as theory
  • A written statement of what the block will and will not achieve

A single diagnostic session

One session where a tutor reads the mock script, works a problem with the student and tells you what the picture is. Some families buy nothing further, because the answer turns out to be that Paper 1 is fine and Paper 2 needs a year rather than a term. We would rather say that in one honest hour than sell a block that cannot do what the family hopes.

  • Mock script read question by question against the two papers
  • A clear statement of whether this is a content gap or a skill gap
  • An estimate of how many weeks each gap actually needs
  • A recommendation that may be to buy nothing at all

01

Reading the mock as a diagnostic rather than as a grade

A 0478 mock percentage tells you almost nothing useful. The same fifty-two per cent can mean a student who knows the content and cannot write an algorithm, or a student who programmes competently and has never learned how a packet is assembled. Those two children need opposite terms of work, and the only way to tell them apart is to look at which questions lost the marks rather than at how many.

The quickest split is by paper. If Paper 1 is well below Paper 2, this is a content and precision problem: definitions that are nearly right, explanations that name a component without saying what it does, conversions attempted without method. That is the good news, because it is finite and it responds to weeks. If Paper 2 is well below Paper 1, it is a skill problem, and skill problems respond to months. A family that knows which one they have can plan; a family looking at a percentage cannot.

Inside Paper 2 the diagnosis goes further. A student who writes a plausible algorithm and then cannot complete the trace table has a dry-running gap: they are thinking in intentions rather than in steps, which is a specific and trainable fault. A student whose pseudocode drifts into Python syntax has a syntax discipline gap, which is the easiest fault in the subject to fix and one of the most expensive to leave. A student who cannot start a problem at all has a decomposition gap, which is the slowest of the three.

The table below is the diagnostic we actually run, in the form we send to parents. Send one marked mock script and a tutor will place your child on it within about fifteen minutes, with an estimate of how many weeks each gap takes to close. That estimate is the thing worth having before any money changes hands, because it is what determines whether tutoring is the right purchase at all this year.

Where they need to be: what the two papers demand on the day

The destination is specific and it is worth stating precisely, because a student revising towards a vague notion of knowing computer science will revise the comfortable parts. Paper 1 Computer Systems runs one hour forty-five minutes for seventy-five marks and covers six topics. Data representation deals with binary, hexadecimal, character sets, images, sound and compression. Data transmission covers packets, methods of transmission, USB and error detection. Hardware covers the central processing unit, the fetch-decode-execute cycle, input and output devices and storage. Software covers system software, operating systems, high and low level languages, translators and interrupts. The internet and its uses covers the web, cloud, cyber-security threats and countermeasures. Automated and emerging technologies covers automated systems, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Paper 2 Algorithms, Programming and Logic runs the same length for the same marks and covers four topics. Algorithm design and problem solving deals with computational thinking, pseudocode, flowcharts, trace tables, validation and test data, and standard methods such as searching, sorting, counting and totalling. Programming covers sequence, selection, iteration, data types, procedures and functions, arrays and file handling. Databases covers single-table structures, field types and SQL. Boolean logic covers gates, logic circuits and truth tables.

The structural fact that changes how a student should prepare is this: programming skill is developed in class in a real language, usually Python, Java or VB.NET, but the examination tests it on paper in pseudocode. A student who has spent two years writing Python in a code editor, with autocomplete and an interpreter telling them when a line is wrong, has never once done the examined task. They write code that works and lose marks for conventions they did not know existed. This is the single most common avoidable loss in the subject.

The other half of the same point is that nothing can be banked in advance. 0478 has no coursework, no project and no practical paper. Three and a half hours in one series decides the whole grade. That makes timed practice the main preparation rather than an optional extra, and it is why we sit full papers rather than working through question banks that feel productive and never test the clock.

What eight weeks can fix, and what needs a year

This is the section families most need and most pages in this market avoid, because an honest answer sometimes costs a sale. The weeks available determine what can be attempted, and pretending otherwise produces a disappointed parent in August and a student who concludes they are bad at the subject when in fact they were given an impossible schedule.

With six to eight weeks, the realistic targets are Paper 1 content on the topics the mock shows are weak, pseudocode syntax discipline, binary and hexadecimal method, truth tables, and examination timing. That is a genuine grade of movement for many students, and none of it is trivial. What six weeks cannot do is turn a student who freezes in front of an unfamiliar problem into one who decomposes it calmly, because that is a habit and habits do not form in six weeks.

With twelve to twenty weeks, trace tables and dry-running come into range, along with the standard algorithm patterns: linear search, bubble sort, totalling and counting with a running variable, validation loops. A student who can write and dry-run those from memory has most of what Paper 2 asks for in its mid-range questions. Decomposition of genuinely unfamiliar problems starts to improve but is not reliable yet.

With a full year or two, the subject can actually be built. Weekly supervised algorithm writing from Year 10 produces a student who reads a problem, breaks it into steps, writes it, dry-runs it and finds their own errors. That student does not need a revision block in Year 11; they need past papers and a clock. The table sets out the four windows with what each honestly delivers, and we say the same thing to a family in Al Nakheel with four weeks left as we say to one in Khuzam with two years.

WHAT EACH WINDOW BEFORE THE SERIES CAN HONESTLY DELIVER

04

Pseudocode against the language the school teaches

  • Loops opened and closed in the published pseudocode form, not Python indentation
  • Variable declarations written out rather than assumed
  • Input and output expressed in the examined convention
  • Procedures and functions distinguished correctly
  • Short algorithms written by hand, on paper, under a timer

A student who has written Python competently for two years can still lose a third of the available marks on the programming questions, and the reason is purely conventional. The examination is answered in pseudocode. Cambridge publishes the conventions it expects, and they are specific: how a loop is opened and closed, how input and output are written, how a declaration looks, how a procedure differs from a function. A student who has never been shown those conventions writes Python, is understood by the examiner, and is marked against a scheme written for something else.

The habits that cause the loss are small and consistent. Colons and indentation carried over from Python. Semicolons and braces carried over from Java. Loop endings omitted because the editor never required them. Variable types left undeclared. None of these reflects a misunderstanding of the algorithm; every one of them costs marks on a paper where seventy-five marks decide half the grade.

The repair is short and it is the highest-return work available in 0478. Two to four weeks of writing short algorithms in pseudocode, by hand, to the published conventions, with a tutor marking the conventions as strictly as the logic. Students resist it for about a week, because they can already code and the exercise feels like a step backwards, and then the marks move and the resistance stops. We do this early in any block, whatever the family's timeline, because it is the cheapest grade improvement in the subject.

The understanding does transfer, and that is worth saying to a student who feels their Python is being dismissed. Sequence, selection, iteration, arrays, file handling and the idea of a function are the same ideas in every language, and a student who genuinely programmes has the hard part already. What they are missing is a dialect, and dialects are learned in a fortnight.

05

Trace tables and the dry run: the skill that is only practice

If one skill separates a middling 0478 grade from a strong one, it is dry-running: taking a piece of code or an algorithm and walking through it line by line with a table of variable values, finding what it actually does rather than what it was meant to do. It appears directly in trace table questions and indirectly everywhere, because a student who can dry-run can check their own work and a student who cannot is guessing.

Students fail at it in a recognisable way. They fill the table with the values they expect rather than the values the code produces. They update a variable in the wrong order within an iteration. They lose track of a loop counter after the third pass and stop writing. They leave the table blank and write a sentence describing what the algorithm is for, which earns nothing. Every one of these is a discipline failure rather than a comprehension failure, and discipline is built by repetition under supervision.

The method is unglamorous. One trace table every session, every week, with the tutor insisting on a row per iteration and a column per variable, and refusing to accept a value that was not derived from the previous row. On a shared screen this works better than on paper, because the tutor can annotate the cell where the reasoning broke and the student keeps the corrected table afterwards. After eight or ten of these, most students start dry-running unprompted when they write their own algorithms, which is the point at which Paper 2 marks begin to move properly.

There is a reason this cannot be compressed. It is the same reason a student cannot learn to sight-read music in a fortnight. The skill is a sequence of small accurate steps performed under mild time pressure, and the only input that improves it is repetitions with correction. A family with eight weeks can start it; a family with a year can finish it. We say which of those applies before taking any money.

06

Boolean logic, databases and the topics taught last

  • Every gate's truth table written from memory, including NAND, NOR and XOR
  • Intermediate outputs written down when reading a logic circuit
  • Truth table rows always in the same order so no combination is missed
  • Field types and primary keys chosen with a stated reason
  • Six worked examples of each SQL query pattern before the series

Two topics on Paper 2 are reliably underprepared across every campus we see, and for the same structural reason: they are taught at the end of the course, in the term when mock examinations are eating the timetable, and nobody comes back to them. Boolean logic is the first. Single-table databases and SQL are the second. Together they are worth enough marks to decide a grade boundary.

Boolean logic is almost pure technique. There is a small set of gates, a small set of truth tables, and a skill in reading a logic circuit from left to right without losing track of an intermediate output. The errors are mechanical: a NAND read as an AND, an intermediate value not written down, a truth table with rows in an inconsistent order so a line is duplicated and another missed. Three to five weeks of short drills, fifteen minutes at a time, converts this from a liability into reliable marks. It is the second-cheapest improvement in the subject after pseudocode conventions.

Databases are similar in shape. The syllabus deals with single-table structures, appropriate field types and primary keys, and a finite set of SQL query patterns: selecting fields, filtering with conditions, ordering results, and simple aggregate functions. A student who has written half a dozen of each will handle anything the paper asks. A student who skipped the topic because it arrived in the last fortnight of teaching meets it cold in the examination and loses the lot.

We front-load both in any revision block, which surprises students who expect to start with programming. The reason is arithmetic rather than pedagogy: these are the topics where the ratio of marks gained to hours invested is highest, and in a short timeline that ratio is the only thing that should decide the running order.

07

The series counted backwards, and the weeks that vanish here

A timeline is only as good as the dates it is built on, and two sets of dates bind. Cambridge International runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series. Every examination centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states plainly that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used. Parents should hold a printed copy of the right one.

The second set is the entry deadlines, which fall far earlier than families expect. Ras Al Khaimah candidates sit the June series or the November series; the February and March sitting belongs to India, so its dates are no use to anyone here. For June, the papers run from May into June and the final entry closes in the spring, months rather than weeks ahead, with forecast grades due to Cambridge before the papers begin and results reaching centres on Cambridge International Direct in August. The November series mirrors that half a year later: entries over the summer, papers in October and November, results in late January. Where the school runs Pearson Edexcel instead, the published November 2026 International GCSE timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, which is what an autumn series actually looks like. Whichever board your centre uses, the gap between the entry deadline and the first paper is the number that matters, and it is measured in months.

Then there are the weeks that disappear from a Ras Al Khaimah calendar and never appear in a revision plan written in September. Mock examinations swallow a fortnight. Ramadan shortens the school day and shifts family routines, and it frequently falls close enough to a summer series that pausing for a month is more expensive than it looks; shortened days also free up afternoon slots that are unavailable the rest of the year, so the sensible response is to move the session rather than suspend it. Eid, half-terms and family travel take more. A plan built on twenty calendar weeks usually has fourteen working ones in it.

The table reads the year backwards from the papers. Confirm every date against the official Cambridge timetable for your centre's zone and examination year on cambridgeinternational.org rather than against this page, and ask the exams officer which zone the centre sits in.

What the travel premium buys, and what a specialist costs here

Start with the premium, because it is the part of this market nobody explains. Published market figures put in-home one-to-one tutoring in this country at AED 180 to 350 an hour according to Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, with independent home tutors quoted from AED 200 to 500 inclusive of travel. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. The gap between those two bands is the travel premium, and the question worth asking is what it actually purchases.

It purchases a commute and a smaller pool. For a subject like 0478 in the northern emirates, the second part dominates. The number of people within driving distance of Mina Al Arab who teach Cambridge Computer Science, can dry-run an algorithm in front of a student and are free on a weekday evening is very small. A parent who hires the best available tutor from that list has done something quite different from hiring a 0478 specialist, and the difference shows up in whether trace tables improve.

The rest of the market, for context. Budget online tutoring runs from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52; at that level a generalist can supervise homework but will not mark pseudocode conventions. An IGCSE, IB or A Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. Premium named tutors go further, with BartyED at AED 650. Monthly packages circulate at around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits.

Those are all other providers' published figures for this market in 2026, named so that you can check them yourself. None is an IB Gram price, and we publish no rate card on these pages, because the honest number depends on the timeline, the gap and how many sessions are genuinely needed, and a figure printed here would be out of date before your child's series. Book the free trial, watch a trace table being worked, and get a number in writing afterwards.

What a tutor can legitimately do, and how to check they may work here

Two boundaries are worth knowing before a family hires anyone, and both are matters of record rather than opinion. The first is what a tutor may do with a student's work. 0478 has no coursework, no project and no internally assessed component, so the academic-honesty questions that surround coursework subjects do not arise in the same form here. Everything a tutor marks is practice, and the only work an examiner ever sees is what the student writes alone in the hall. That is a simpler position than most subjects offer, and it is worth stating.

What a tutor should not do, even in practice work, is supply finished answers that the student copies into a school assignment and submits as their own. Where a campus sets a programming task that contributes to an internal report, support means teaching the technique and reviewing the student's own attempt. The same rule covers past papers and mark schemes: a tutor references and links the official material on cambridgeinternational.org rather than redistributing syllabus documents, papers or mark schemes, because reproducing those is a copyright matter rather than a grey area.

The second boundary is legal and it applies to every private tutor in the country. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from the ministry are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fee schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

The official application route is the ministry's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time. A parent may reasonably ask any tutor whether they hold the permit. Separately, a tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs an educational services permit for a training institute from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority; IB Gram occupies no premises in the UAE, holds no such permit and claims no regulator endorsement of any kind.

Where we tutor

Where 0478 students are across Ras Al Khaimah, and what it does to the timeline

The practical constraint on a revision timeline here is when a session can start and whether it survives the week. That varies by community, and so does which campus a household is attached to and whether Computer Science runs there at all.

Al Nakheel

The largest source of 0478 enquiries in the emirate. Short runs home from city-side campuses mean a 4.30pm or 5pm start is genuinely workable, which matters because algorithm practice goes badly after seven in the evening.

Khuzam

British-curriculum provision nearby and a noticeably higher share of Year 10 enquiries. That is the better year to start: Paper 2 skill accumulates over months, and a student beginning in Year 10 has the window that a Year 11 starter does not.

Al Dhait North and South

Larger households, often with siblings on different subjects. Back-to-back evening slots for two children are straightforward to schedule over video and effectively impossible to arrange with two visiting tutors in one evening.

Al Hamra Village

International and British provision on this side, with more students likely to continue computing post-16. For those students the Paper 2 skills built in Year 10 matter in eighteen months, not only in June.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Newer coastal communities with a longer run to the city-side campuses. Timelines here fail for logistical reasons rather than academic ones, which is exactly the failure a fixed video slot removes.

Al Marjan Island

Smaller resident population with frequent term-time travel. A revision timeline that survives two weeks abroad is worth more here than a nearby tutor, because a missed fortnight in Paper 2 practice is hard to recover.

Al Mairid, Al Uraibi and Julphar

Older city districts with established campuses. A share of enquiries from here involve students whose school offers ICT rather than Computer Science, and who are sitting 0478 as an additional entry.

Al Qusaidat and Al Rams

The northern strip, where a search for a local 0478 specialist returns almost nobody. Families here never need the online argument explained; they need a timeline that assumes no local fallback exists.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Long commutes in both directions push sessions to 6.30pm or later. Weekend mornings are the slot most requested for the longer stretch that a full timed paper needs, and the one we recommend for Paper 2 practice.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

City-side campuses entering Cambridge computing

Where most 0478 and 0417 candidates in the emirate are enrolled. The structural detail that matters for a timeline is staffing: one teacher covering Computer Science, ICT and often the school's own systems cannot supervise individual algorithm writing week after week, however capable they are.

  • The Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Our Own English High School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Delhi Private School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Little Flower English School Ras Al Khaimah
  • RAK English Speaking School

Southern coast and British provision

Campuses on the Al Hamra side are the ones most likely to continue computing into post-16 study. Students here need Paper 2 skill built for the long run rather than patched for June, and the timeline we agree with those families looks different as a result.

  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - International School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • Emirates National Schools - Ras Al Khaimah

Schools are named as context about the Ras Al Khaimah schooling ecosystem that students we support attend; no affiliation, approval or relationship with any school or group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the mock script, not the percentage

One marked mock paper tells a tutor which of the six common gaps your child has, and a percentage tells them nothing. We read it question by question, split it by paper, and come back with a placement on the diagnostic table and an estimate of how many weeks each gap needs to close.

  2. 02

Agree what the available weeks can do

Before anything is booked we write down what your timeline can realistically achieve and what it cannot. A family with five weeks and a decomposition gap is told plainly that the gap needs a term. That conversation is free and occasionally ends with us recommending nothing.

  3. 03

Watch a trace table in the free trial

In the trial lesson, ask the tutor to work a trace table with your child on a shared screen. A tutor who insists on a row per iteration and refuses a value not derived from the row above is teaching the examined skill. A tutor who explains the algorithm's purpose and moves on is not.

  4. 04

    Fix the pseudocode conventions first

Whatever the timeline, the first two to four weeks go on writing short algorithms by hand in examined pseudocode. Students who already code resist this and then stop resisting when the marks move. It is the cheapest grade improvement available in 0478 and it is almost never covered properly in school.

  5. 05

Review against timed papers on a fixed cycle

Every four to six weeks a timed paper is marked and compared with the last. If the gap the plan targeted is not closing, the approach changes or we tell you the hour is not earning its money. If no 0478 specialist is free in your slot, we say so rather than putting a generalist in it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The timeline is stated before the sale

We write down what the weeks you have can achieve and what they cannot, and we do it before any payment. A family with four weeks and a dry-running gap deserves to hear that the gap needs a term, not a reassuring sentence followed by an invoice.

Pseudocode conventions are treated as the priority they are

A competent Python programmer can lose marks across every programming question because the examination is answered in pseudocode and nobody showed them the conventions. Fixing that takes two to four weeks and it is the highest-return work in the subject. Schools rarely have the time; we start there.

Dry-running is drilled, not explained

One supervised trace table every session, with a row per iteration and no value accepted that was not derived from the row above. On a shared screen the broken cell is annotated in place and the student keeps the corrected table. This is the skill that moves Paper 2 and it responds only to repetition.

Scarcity is addressed rather than papered over

Computer science is a single-set subject on most campuses here, and the pool of local 0478 specialists willing to drive to Al Rams is very short. Live video replaces a list of two or three people with a national one, which is the actual argument rather than a convenience claim.

Every figure is attributed and dated

Each AED rate on this page is a named provider's published figure for this market in 2026. We print no invented statistic, no self-reported rating and no grade promise, and we publish no IB Gram rate card here because an honest number depends on the gap and the timeline.

The permit position is stated plainly

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a ministry private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Ask any tutor whether they hold it. IB Gram occupies no UAE premises, holds no regulator permit for premises and claims no endorsement from any authority or board.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

What does a weak 0478 mock result actually tell me?+

On its own, very little. The same mark can describe a student who knows the content and cannot write an algorithm, or one who programmes well and has never learned how a packet is assembled. Those two need opposite terms of work. Split the script by paper first: Paper 1 below Paper 2 is a content and precision gap, which responds to six to ten weeks. Paper 2 below Paper 1 is a skill gap, which responds to months rather than weeks. Send the marked script and a tutor will place your child precisely and estimate how long each gap takes.

Is Paper 2 harder than Paper 1 in Computer Science?+

Not harder, but slower to improve. Both papers run one hour forty-five minutes for seventy-five marks and each is half the grade. Paper 1 is a defined body of content across six topics, so disciplined revision moves it in weeks. Paper 2 tests skill across four topics: writing algorithms, dry-running them in trace tables, SQL queries and Boolean logic. Skill accumulates with supervised repetition over months. A family planning a timeline needs that difference, because an eight-week block aimed at Paper 2 fluency will disappoint while the same block aimed at Paper 1 content often succeeds.

My son codes well in Python but loses marks on the programming questions. Why?+

Because the examination is answered in pseudocode and he has been writing Python. Cambridge publishes the conventions it expects for loops, declarations, input and output, procedures and functions, and a student who has never been shown them writes code that works and is marked against a scheme written for something else. Colons, indentation, missing loop endings and undeclared variables all cost marks without reflecting any misunderstanding. The repair takes two to four weeks of writing short algorithms by hand to the published conventions, and it is the cheapest grade improvement available in the subject.

What is a trace table and why does my daughter lose marks on it?+

A trace table is a dry run: walking through an algorithm line by line with a column per variable and a row per iteration, recording what the code actually does rather than what it was meant to do. Students fail it in recognisable ways, writing the values they expect, updating variables in the wrong order, losing the loop counter after three passes, or leaving it blank and describing the algorithm's purpose instead. It is a discipline failure, not a comprehension failure, and the only thing that fixes it is one supervised table a session for eight to sixteen weeks.

Can programming really be taught over a shared screen?+

For this syllabus it is an advantage rather than a compromise. The examined task is writing pseudocode by hand and completing tables, and both sit naturally on a shared screen where the tutor annotates the exact cell where the reasoning broke. The corrected version is saved and sent, so the student revises from their own marked work rather than from a memory of being told. What video cannot supply is the hours of independent practice between sessions, and no delivery format can; that part is a household habit and it is the real variable.

How many weeks before the June series does my child need for Computer Science?+

It depends entirely on which gap the mock reveals. Pseudocode conventions take two to four weeks. Binary and hexadecimal method takes one or two. Boolean logic takes three to five. Paper 1 content gaps take six to ten. Trace tables as a reliable habit take eight to sixteen. Decomposition of unfamiliar problems takes a full term at minimum. So a family with eight weeks can achieve a great deal and a specific list of things, and cannot achieve one particular thing. We write that list down before anything is booked.

Does 0478 have any coursework or a programming project?+

No. Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science has no coursework, no project and no practical examination; the entire grade comes from two written papers in one series. Two consequences follow. Nothing can be banked in advance, so timed practice is the main preparation rather than optional revision. And the academic-honesty questions that surround coursework subjects do not arise in the same form, because the only work an examiner sees is what the student writes alone in the hall. Everything a tutor marks is practice by definition.

Does it matter whether my son's class codes in Python, Java or VB.NET?+

Whichever the school teaches, because the examination does not test a language. Centres typically use Python, Java or VB.NET, and the understanding transfers completely: sequence, selection, iteration, arrays, procedures, functions and file handling are the same ideas everywhere. What does not transfer is syntax, and the examined answers are written in pseudocode. A student should be fluent in the class language for developing understanding and separately fluent in examined pseudocode for writing answers. Treating those as the same skill is the commonest avoidable loss in the subject.

Why does my child keep getting binary and hexadecimal conversions wrong?+

Almost always because there is no written method, only a half-remembered trick. A student converting by inspection gets most of them right and the rest wrong unpredictably, which looks like carelessness and is actually the absence of a procedure. The fix is one of the quickest in the subject: a single written method, applied to twenty conversions in both directions, checked each time. One to two weeks of short daily practice makes it reliable. Data representation is early on Paper 1 and sets the tone of the paper, so unreliability here costs more than the marks alone.

Should my daughter be sitting 0478 at all, or would ICT suit her better?+

They are different subjects that are frequently taught by the same person, which is why families confuse them. 0478 is algorithmic: pseudocode, trace tables, logic and computer systems, assessed by two written papers. ICT 0417 is applied: practical competence with documents, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and web authoring, assessed through practical papers alongside theory. A student who enjoys building things with software often does much better in ICT; a student who enjoys working out why a program behaves as it does belongs in Computer Science. Several campuses here offer one and not the other, or both in a single option block.

Does 0478 prepare a student for A Level Computer Science?+

It is the right foundation, and the part that matters is Paper 2. The post-16 course adds data structures, abstract data types, object-oriented programming, assembly language and a programming project, and it is weighted towards exactly the algorithmic skill that Paper 2 measures. Students who reached a good IGCSE grade mainly through Paper 1 recall, while quietly avoiding the programming questions, find the step severe. If a student may continue, the weekly supervised algorithm writing in Year 10 is an investment in eighteen months' time as much as in June.

How much do Computer Science tutors charge around Ras Al Khaimah?+

Published market figures for this country in 2026 run from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour at the budget online end, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit inclusive of travel, and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IGCSE or A Level specialist. Monthly packages of around AED 799 for eight online sessions also circulate. Those are other providers' figures, cited with their sources for context. IB Gram publishes no rate card on these pages; book the free trial, watch a trace table worked, and get a number in writing.

Our campus has no computer science specialist. How much does that matter?+

For Paper 1 it matters less than you would think, because the content is defined and a conscientious teacher can cover it. For Paper 2 it matters a great deal, because the skills need supervised repetition that a single teacher covering two subjects cannot provide for one student. This is the specific gap in the northern emirates and it is why we lead with it rather than with claims about teaching quality. The practical answer is a weekly hour of supervised algorithm writing from Year 10, which is what the school cannot resource and what video delivers without a commute.

Does my child need SQL for 0478, and how much?+

Yes, and the quantity is finite, which makes it one of the better returns on revision time. The syllabus covers single-table database structures, appropriate field types, primary keys and a small set of SQL query patterns: selecting fields, filtering with conditions, ordering results and simple aggregate functions. Six worked examples of each pattern is enough for most candidates. The problem is timing rather than difficulty: databases are usually taught in the last fortnight of the course, when mock examinations are swallowing attention, so the topic gets met cold in the paper.

How are logic gate questions marked, and why are they so often wrong?+

Logic questions are nearly pure technique, which is why a few weeks of drills reliably converts them from a liability into marks. Candidates must know every gate's truth table, including NAND, NOR and XOR, and must read a logic circuit left to right while writing down each intermediate output. The errors are mechanical: a NAND read as an AND, an intermediate value held in the head and forgotten, truth table rows written in an inconsistent order so one combination is duplicated and another missed. Fifteen minutes of drills three times a week for a month usually settles it.

What happens to the revision plan during Ramadan and mock season?+

Both eat weeks that a plan written in September did not account for, which is why we count working weeks rather than calendar weeks. Mock examinations typically swallow a fortnight. During Ramadan the school day shortens, which actually frees afternoon slots that are unavailable the rest of the year, and some families move the session to after Iftar instead. Because Ramadan often falls close to a summer series, pausing for a month usually costs more than it saves. We agree the revised slot in advance so the weekly supervised practice continues at a lighter volume rather than stopping.

Send the mock, get the timeline in writing

The useful next step costs nothing. Send one marked 0478 mock script and a tutor will read it question by question, split it by paper, and tell you which of the six common gaps your child has: content and precision, pseudocode conventions, conversion method, trace tables, Boolean logic or decomposition. With that you get an estimate in writing of how many weeks each gap needs, and an honest statement of what your available weeks can and cannot deliver. Sometimes that estimate says the right purchase is two timed papers and a marker rather than a term of lessons, and we will say so. The trial lesson is free and happens before any payment.
