IB MYP Tutor in Fujairah

An IB MYP tutor is not an exam coach, because there is no exam yet. The job is to read four criteria marked out of eight, work out which one has been quietly costing your child marks since MYP 2, and teach to it. For Fujairah families that diagnosis is hard to get locally, since cohorts on the east coast are small. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial.

  • Matched to the MYP subject group and the criterion, not just the subject
  • Works from your child's own school unit plans and task sheets
  • Lessons delivered online over live video, on Gulf Standard Time
  • Personal Project support stays inside the IB honesty boundary

IB & IGCSE in Fujairah

Reading an MYP report before buying anything

Parents searching for an IB MYP tutor in Fujairah have usually just read a report they cannot decode. It shows four letters with numbers beside them, a subject grade between one and seven, and comments about conceptual understanding. There is no percentage, no class rank and no past paper to point at. A parent who did O Levels or CBSE has no reference point for a five in criterion B, and the school's explanation at parents evening lasted four minutes.

That opacity is why MYP help gets bought badly. The common mistakes are to treat the programme as early exam preparation and drill questions that do not exist, to buy general homework supervision that touches none of the criteria, or to wait for the Diploma on the theory that the marks start counting then. The third is the most expensive, because the skills the Diploma assesses - independent investigation, evaluation, reflection - are precisely what the MYP criteria have been marking all along.

The useful work is narrower than parents expect. In most cases one criterion is being lost repeatedly across subjects. A student strong on content who scores well in criterion A and poorly in criterion C in sciences has a data-handling problem, not a knowledge problem, and no amount of revision will move it. Finding that pattern takes one session with three marked tasks in front of a tutor who knows what each criterion rewards.

On the east coast there is a second complication. Fujairah's private-school set is small, so MYP cohorts are small, and a student may go three years without being taught by a specialist in their weakest subject group. Design and Arts are often taught by generalists, mathematics sets are broad, and a child who needs stretching in one subject and rebuilding in another gets the average. That is not a criticism of the schools; it is arithmetic.

IB Gram works with Fujairah families online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, which is a service we run only in India, so nothing here should be read as a promise that a tutor appears in Sakamkam on a Tuesday. The practical gain is access: a specialist in the exact subject group, working from your child's own unit plan and task sheet, at an hour that fits the school bus. The rest of this page is written for that decision. It explains how criterion marks become a grade, sets the four realistic responses to a weak report against each other with their costs, names the criteria where marks usually go missing in each subject group, and answers the two questions MYP 4 families on this coast keep asking: whether to finish MYP 5 or move to an IGCSE route, and how to handle the Personal Project year without crossing the academic honesty line.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP sits in the middle of a three-stage continuum, and the stage either side changes what support is worth buying. A student entering MYP 1 from a primary route has different gaps from one leaving MYP 5 for the Diploma.

PYPAges 3-12 · to Year 6

IB Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, with no subject-by-subject criterion marking and no formal grade. Students arrive in MYP 1 fluent in asking questions and often unpractised at producing a structured written answer under a time limit. The transition gap is almost always in writing stamina and in handling a task sheet with explicit assessment language on it.

Few Fujairah schools run a full PYP, so most local MYP 1 intakes mix students from a national curriculum, an Indian board and a British primary. Three different starting points in one classroom is the normal condition here, and it is why early MYP reports vary so sharply between neighbours.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, four criteria each, every criterion marked out of eight against published descriptors. Grade boundaries convert the criterion total into a 1-7 subject grade, which is why two students with the same raw total can sit in different bands. Interdisciplinary units and approaches-to-learning skills are assessed too, and the Personal Project arrives in MYP 5.

In a small Fujairah cohort a student can be the only one in a set needing a particular kind of stretch. That shows up as a stable mediocre grade across several terms rather than as a crisis, which is why east-coast families often start looking in MYP 4 rather than earlier.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Internal assessment is weighty and deadline-driven, and UAE schools sit the May session. The step from MYP 5 to DP1 is mostly about volume and independence rather than new content, and students who were carried by a teacher in MYP feel it in the first term.

Diploma places on this coast are limited, so a Fujairah MYP 5 student may be choosing between a local sixth form, weekly boarding in Sharjah and a British A-Level route. The MYP grades are the evidence those conversations use, which gives MYP 4 and 5 a weight parents often discover late.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The IGCSE alternative to MYP 4-5

Some UAE schools run IGCSE in place of the final two MYP years, trading criterion assessment for external papers and a portable certificate. Cambridge tiers subjects into Core and Extended with capped Core grades; Pearson uses Foundation and Higher in maths. The certificate is externally recognised, which matters for the Ministry of Education equivalency route.

The choice between finishing MYP 5 and moving to an IGCSE route is a live question in Fujairah because families relocate and because some local schools offer only one of the two. It deserves a decision rather than a drift, and it is covered in its own section below.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP help is bought by subject group, and each group has its own four criteria with its own names. These are the groups Fujairah parents ask about most, with what the marking actually rewards in each.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended MYP routes

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is where confident calculators lose marks: the task wants a general rule, tested and justified, not a correct answer. Students who have never been taught to generalise score a four for years without anyone naming the cause.

Sciences

Integrated and separate science routes

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion C is the usual gap: processing data, explaining a trend against theory and evaluating a method. A student can know every fact in the unit and still be stuck at four because nobody taught them to interrogate their own results.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Marks go missing in analysing, where students summarise a text instead of examining how the writer builds meaning. The fix is close reading on short extracts rather than more essays, because the skill is noticing and the volume of writing is not the problem.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed by phase rather than by year group. The phase matters more than the age: a student in phase 3 being taught alongside phase 5 peers will read as weak when the real issue is placement. Worth confirming which phase the school has entered your child in.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the criterion that separates grades: it wants evaluation of sources and of different perspectives, with judgement. Students who write accurate description reliably land in the middle band, and they rarely know why.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. The assessment is of the documented process, so a beautiful final product with a thin design folder scores badly. This is the group most often taught by a non-specialist in a small school, and the one where a few sessions on process documentation change the grade fastest.

Arts

Visual and performing

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. As with Design, the process journal carries marks that the finished piece cannot recover. Students who have been praised for talent are often the ones losing marks, because nobody asked them to document how a decision was reached.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting on performance. The written and planning criteria surprise families who assumed this subject sits outside academic reporting. A student with a stable five here usually has a reflection problem, not a fitness one.

Interdisciplinary units

Assessed separately in each MYP year

Assessed on evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two subject groups. Students who do well in both parent subjects can still score poorly because they treat the unit as two pieces of work rather than one argument that needs both lenses. This is the single most-misunderstood piece of MYP assessment.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Marked on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with the process journal as evidence. It is the first long independent task most students manage and it rewards honest documentation of difficulty. A tutor's role is to teach the criteria and question the plan; the project, the journal and the report remain the student's own work throughout.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of working on MYP subjects, each aimed at a different problem. All of them run live online, one-to-one, at a time that fits the east-coast school run.

Criterion diagnostic

One session with three marked MYP tasks from different subjects in front of the tutor. The purpose is to find the criterion being lost repeatedly rather than to teach content. It ends with a written note naming the criterion, the type of task where it shows, and what practice will move it.

  • Bring three marked tasks and the task sheets that came with them
  • Output is a named criterion, not a general impression
  • Free as a trial lesson, no card details to book

Unit-paced support through the term

A fortnightly or weekly slot that follows the school's own unit plan, working on the task that is actually due. The tutor teaches the criterion the task is assessed against, questions the student's plan, and responds to drafts the student has produced. Content gaps are filled as they surface rather than pre-taught.

  • Follows the school unit plan and the published task sheet
  • Written note after each session so the pattern is visible across terms
  • Fortnightly works for MYP 1-3; weekly suits MYP 4-5
  • Slot can move permanently when transport or Ramadan hours change

Transition block into DP1 or Year 10

A short run of sessions in the final MYP term aimed at the step up: longer written tasks, independent investigation, and the habits the Diploma or an IGCSE route assumes. Built around the specific subjects chosen, with the gap between MYP marking and external papers made explicit.

  • Six to ten sessions in the term before the change
  • Targets writing volume, independence and timed work
  • Covers what an external mark scheme rewards that criteria do not

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Fujairah

01

What an MYP report is actually telling you

Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of eight against published descriptors. The criterion names differ by subject group, which is where most of the confusion comes from: criterion B in mathematics is investigating patterns, in sciences it is inquiring and designing, and in language and literature it is organising. A parent who learns what B means in one subject and applies it to another will draw the wrong conclusion.

The four criterion levels are added and converted to a subject grade from one to seven using published boundaries. Two consequences follow. First, the grade hides the shape of the performance: a student at seven, seven, three, six has a very different problem from one at six, five, six, six, and both can land on the same number. Second, movement in one weak criterion shifts the grade more than broad improvement does, which makes the diagnosis worth more than extra generic practice.

So the first question to ask the school is not how your child is doing but which criterion has been lowest for the longest, in which subjects. Schools hold that data in the gradebook even when the report does not show it. Three marked tasks with the task sheets attached will usually reveal the same pattern without anyone having to ask. That is the material a first session should work from, and it is more useful than any diagnostic test a tutor could invent. A school that cannot produce the criterion history is telling you something worth knowing as well.

The three alternatives Fujairah parents weigh against MYP tutoring

Almost every family searching for an IB MYP tutor in Fujairah is choosing between four courses of action, and three of them cost nothing to start. The first is to wait for the Diploma, on the theory that MYP grades do not count. The second is to ask the school for intervention, which is free, informed and limited by the staffing the school has. The third is to buy exam-style drilling of the kind that works at IGCSE, which is the most common wasted spend in the programme. The fourth is criterion-led one-to-one work.

Waiting is the costliest of the three free options, and not because the grades matter in themselves. The MYP marks the skills the Diploma then assesses under time pressure: investigation, evaluation, reflection, documentation. A student who reaches DP1 having never been taught to evaluate a method does not have a two-year problem to fix, they have a first-term crisis. School intervention is genuinely worth asking for first, and on a small coast it is sometimes limited to the one teacher who already teaches the subject.

Drilling is the one to be suspicious of. In MYP 1 to 3 there is no external paper to practise for, so question drills deliver a false sense of progress, and in MYP 4 and 5 the internal examinations are still marked against criteria. A tutor who opens with a past paper has misread the programme. The table below sets the four options against what each one actually changes.

03

Criterion by criterion: where MYP marks go missing

  • Sciences: interpret the trend against theory, criticise the method specifically
  • Mathematics: state a general rule, justify it, test it on a fresh case
  • Language and Literature: analyse technique, do not retell the text
  • Individuals and Societies: reach a judgement and defend it
  • Design and Arts: the process journal carries the marks, not the final piece

In sciences, the reliable gap is processing and evaluating. Students present data accurately, state what happened, and stop. The descriptors want the trend interpreted against the underlying theory, the method criticised with specific reference to what it could not control, and improvements that are more than a longer repeat. That is a teachable move set, and it is usually three or four sessions of work with the student's own practical reports rather than a term of content revision.

In mathematics, investigating patterns is the equivalent. The task asks for a general rule, justified and tested on a case that was not used to build it. A student who finds the pattern and writes it down without justification is capped by the descriptors whatever their arithmetic is like. In language and literature, the recurring loss is in analysing: summarising what a text says rather than examining how the writer produces an effect, which feels like diligence and marks like a four.

In Individuals and Societies, thinking critically is where grades separate, because evaluation and perspective require a judgement the student is often reluctant to make. In Design and Arts, the marks sit in the documented process, so students with real ability score below their work. The common thread is that none of these is a content weakness, which is exactly why extra content teaching leaves the grade where it was. A parent can test this cheaply: ask the student to explain, in their own words, what the weak criterion is asking for. A student who cannot say it has not been taught it, however much of the syllabus they can recite back.

04

MYP 4 and 5, or a move to IGCSE: deciding rather than drifting

Some UAE schools run the final two MYP years as published, and some substitute IGCSE in Years 10 and 11 while keeping the MYP framework below. In Fujairah, where provision is limited, a family may have the choice made for them by which school has a place. Where there is a choice, it is worth making it deliberately in MYP 3, because transferring mid-course costs a term of settling in whichever direction it goes.

The arguments are not evenly matched across purposes. IGCSE produces an external certificate that is portable, recognised, and relevant to the Ministry of Education equivalency route: the published British-track requirement is five accredited subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education not counted among the five, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels. MYP 5 completion is internally assessed and continuum-facing, and the equivalency position for the IB route should be checked on the Ministry's own channel rather than taken from any tutoring site, including this one.

Against that, the MYP route keeps the student inside the assessment language the Diploma will use, which is a real advantage for a child going on to DP1 at the same school. The decision therefore turns on two things: whether the family expects to stay through sixth form, and whether the local school can staff the subjects the student wants at Higher Level. Both questions belong in a meeting with the school, not in a brochure.

The Personal Project, and the line a tutor must not cross

  • Marks sit in planning, applying skills and reflecting, evidenced by the journal
  • A tutor teaches criteria and questions plans; the work stays the student's own
  • Early sessions on the goal and success criteria save the most time
  • The school supervisor owns the deadlines; a tutor should work behind them

The Personal Project in MYP 5 is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with the process journal as the evidence base. Students consistently misread it as a product assessment and pour their effort into the artefact while keeping a thin, retrospective journal. Marks follow the documented process, so a modest outcome with an honest, detailed record of decisions and setbacks will outscore an impressive outcome with nothing behind it.

This is also the point where outside help is most easily misused. The IB's academic honesty rules make the student responsible for their own work, and a project that shows an adult's hand is a malpractice risk for the student rather than an advantage. Nobody at IB Gram supplies project text, journal entries or report sections, and we do not edit a student's submission into shape. What a tutor can legitimately do is teach the criteria, question whether the plan is achievable, probe a reflection that has gone shallow, and respond to what the student has already drafted.

In practice the most valuable sessions are early. A plan with a clear goal, a defined set of criteria for success and a realistic timeline makes the rest of the project self-documenting. A supervisor at school holds the formal relationship and sets the internal deadlines, and a tutor should be asking what the supervisor has said rather than competing with it. If a project is already late and the temptation is to have someone else carry it over the line, the honest answer is that the mark for a thin project is survivable and a malpractice finding is not.

06

Interdisciplinary units and the skills no timetable owns

Each MYP year includes at least one interdisciplinary unit, assessed on evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two subject groups. Students who are comfortable in both parent subjects routinely underperform here, because they produce two parallel pieces of work rather than one argument that genuinely needs both disciplines. The criterion rewards the synthesis itself: what the second lens showed that the first could not.

Approaches to learning sit in the same category of unowned skills. Research, self-management, communication and thinking skills are explicitly part of the programme and are reported on in most schools, but they belong to no single teacher's scheme of work. A student who cannot plan a two-week task or take usable notes loses marks across every subject group simultaneously, and the pattern reads as general weakness when it is actually one fixable habit.

These are good targets for outside work precisely because they fall between departments. Note-taking that produces something usable a week later, a planning routine for a multi-stage task, and a method for checking a draft against a task sheet are all teachable in a handful of sessions, and they transfer to the Diploma intact. A small cohort school cannot easily timetable them; an individual session can do nothing else. The test of whether the work has landed is also unusually simple. Ask the student to show you their plan for the next long task before they start it, and ask again a week later whether the plan survived contact with the work. A student who can answer both questions has the self-management the Diploma will assume, and one who cannot will lose marks in DP1 for reasons no subject tutor can diagnose.

07

Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies alongside the MYP

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies run alongside the MYP by regulation
  • First-language and additional-language Arabic are taught as separate streams
  • KHDA measures mandatory-subject time in 40-minute lesson units
  • Support works from the school's own material, not a substitute syllabus

UAE private schools teach the mandatory national subjects whatever international curriculum they are licensed for. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA's published requirements go further: separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes for the two groups strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ.

Those requirements shape the timetable your MYP child actually sits. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. For a student in MYP 4 carrying eight subject groups plus Arabic and Islamic Education, the practical effect is that the week is full before any homework is set, and an evening tuition slot competes with real fatigue.

For tutoring there are two consequences. Arabic support is examination and technique work in Arabic, not conversational practice, and it is streamed by whether the student is a first-language or additional-language learner. And for the mandatory subjects, the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry permission is not allowed, so support means teaching the school's own material better rather than importing a parallel course. Fujairah schools answer to the federal Ministry of Education, so their published requirements are the reference point rather than KHDA's.

08

Building the bridge from a small cohort to DP1

The gap between MYP 5 and DP1 is not mainly about content. It is volume, independence and the fact that internal assessment deadlines arrive while new teaching continues. A student in a cohort of eight has often been carried by proximity: the teacher noticed the unfinished task, the deadline moved, the conversation happened in the corridor. In DP1 the same student meets a schedule that assumes they manage themselves, and the first set of grades can be a shock to a family who saw sixes throughout MYP.

Two pieces of work in the final MYP term reduce that. The first is written volume under time, because MYP tasks are produced over days and Diploma papers are not. The second is a working method for a long task with stages - the thing the Personal Project was supposed to teach, applied to a subject. Where the student is heading for a Higher Level subject the local school cannot staff deeply, the third piece is simply starting with a specialist early enough that DP1 is not the introduction.

This is where distance stops mattering and the subject pool starts to. A Fujairah student who wants Chemistry at Higher Level, or Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, needs a tutor who has taught that course rather than one who lives nearby. Online matching makes that available on a Tuesday evening at Gulf Standard Time, and the same tutor can usually continue through DP1 and DP2, which is worth more than any single term of support.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Fujairah

Where a Fujairah family lives changes which schools are realistic, how large the MYP cohort is likely to be, and what time a session can start. These notes are about those three things.

Fujairah City

Where most of the emirate's private-school MYP provision sits. Cohorts are modest, and a single subject group may be taught by one teacher across all five MYP years, which makes a weak match in that subject hard to escape without outside help.

Al Faseel

Short school runs and an early finish, so MYP students here can realistically hold a 4.30pm or 5pm slot. Useful for the younger years, where a shorter session twice a week works better than a single long one after a full day.

Sakamkam

Inland, with transport that arrives home later than the school day suggests. A 6pm start holds through the year. For MYP 4 and 5 students carrying the Personal Project alongside subject tasks, a later fixed slot protects the evening rather than fragmenting it.

Merashid

Students here are spread across several schools, so two MYP 3 neighbours can be working to different unit plans and different interdisciplinary pairings. Any support has to follow the school's own task sheet, which is why we ask for it before the first session.

Al Gurfa

South along the coast, where the school journey is long enough that fatigue is a genuine variable in the evening. Shorter, more frequent sessions work better here than a ninety-minute block, particularly for MYP 1 and 2.

Dibba Al-Fujairah

At the top of the coast, where neighbouring Dibba Al-Hisn is Sharjah territory and its schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Families comparing MYP provision across that line are comparing two different regulators as well as two schools.

Qidfa and Mirbah

Small coastal communities whose students travel for school. For MYP families the practical question is how much of the evening survives the journey, because MYP tasks are produced at home over several days rather than crammed before a paper.

Fujairah private schools and the local MYP picture

Private schools inside the emirate are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. Curriculum provision on this coast leans British and Indian, so full MYP continuum places are limited and some families run an MYP-style middle school into an IGCSE Year 10 instead.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send three marked MYP tasks and their task sheets

Not a report summary: the actual marked work, with the criterion breakdown and the task sheet that came with each piece. Three tasks from different subjects is enough for a pattern to show. Say which year group your child is in and which subjects the school is worried about.

  2. 02

Free trial session that names a criterion

One hour online, at a time that fits the school bus. The tutor reads the marked work, teaches against the weakest criterion for most of the session, and finishes by naming it and the kind of task where it shows. Booked without card details, one per student.

  3. 03

A short written plan with a number of weeks

You receive a note saying which criterion is being targeted, what practice moves it, and roughly how many weeks to expect before marked work shows the change. Where the honest answer is that the school is already on it, the plan says that and nothing further is spent.

  4. 04

Fortnightly or weekly slot built around school tasks

Sessions follow the school's unit plan and the task that is actually due, rather than a parallel syllabus. The same tutor stays with the subject so the criterion work accumulates. Slots move permanently when transport times or Ramadan hours change the evening.

  5. 05

Reviewed on the school's own marking

Progress is read from the next marked task, not from how the sessions felt. If two cycles of school marking show no movement, the approach changes or the match changes. Families say so early; a term spent being polite about a poor fit is a term the MYP does not give back.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by subject group and criterion

A request for MYP science help is answered by someone who can teach processing and evaluating specifically, with your child's own practical reports in front of them. In a small Fujairah cohort that specificity is the thing the school finds hardest to supply, whatever the quality of its teaching.

Works from the school's task sheet

Sessions use the unit plan, the task and the criterion descriptors the school issued, because MYP work is only assessable against those. Importing a generic course produces a student who is busy and a grade that does not move.

No exam drilling where there is no exam

MYP 1 to 3 has no external paper, and MYP 4 and 5 internal examinations are still criterion-marked. Past-paper drilling is the most common waste of money in this programme, and a tutor who opens with one has misread what is being assessed.

Honest boundaries on the Personal Project

The project, the journal and the report stay the student's own throughout. A tutor teaches the criteria, questions the plan and responds to drafts. That boundary is what makes the help safe to use under the IB's academic honesty rules, and it is a real difference from the essay services in these results.

Scheduling built for the east coast

Transport from inland and northern districts arrives later than a Dubai timetable assumes, the week is already full of mandatory subjects, and Ramadan moves the evening. Slots are chosen so they hold for the year rather than for October, and they can be moved permanently.

The same tutor can continue into DP1

A match made in MYP 4 for a subject the student intends to take at Higher Level can carry through the transition and into the Diploma. Continuity is worth more than any single term of support, particularly where the local school has limited depth in that subject.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Fujairah: your questions answered

How is a 1-7 MYP subject grade worked out from criteria marked out of eight?+

Each of the four criteria is marked out of eight against published descriptors, the four levels are added to give a total out of 32, and published grade boundaries convert that total into a subject grade from one to seven. Two students with the same grade can have very different profiles, which is why the grade alone is a poor guide to what needs fixing. Ask the school which criterion has been lowest for the longest. Moving one persistently weak criterion usually shifts the grade more than broad improvement across all four.

What does criterion C in MYP sciences actually measure?+

Processing and evaluating. The descriptors want data presented correctly, the trend interpreted against the underlying science, the method criticised with specific reference to what it failed to control, and improvements that go beyond repeating the experiment more times. Most students stop after describing what happened, which caps them in the middle bands however well they know the content. It is a teachable set of moves, and three or four sessions working through the student's own practical reports normally changes the quality of the write-up visibly.

Is the MYP weaker preparation for external exams than an IGCSE route?+

For timed-paper stamina, yes, and that is a real gap worth planning for. MYP tasks are produced over days against criteria, so students arrive at external examinations with less practice at writing fast under pressure. What the MYP builds instead is investigation, evaluation and reflection, which is precisely what Diploma internal assessment demands. Families who finish MYP 5 and then meet external papers should budget a term for timed work; families who take the IGCSE route should expect to build investigation skills later, in DP1.

Should a Fujairah student stay in MYP 4-5 or transfer to an IGCSE school?+

Decide it in MYP 3, because a mid-course transfer costs a term either way. IGCSE gives an externally examined, portable certificate relevant to the published Ministry of Education British-track equivalency rule of five accredited subjects at no less than E or grade 3. Finishing MYP keeps your child inside the assessment language the Diploma uses, which helps if they are staying for sixth form at the same school. The deciding questions are usually whether your posting is secure and whether the local school can staff the Higher Level subjects your child wants.

Our Fujairah school runs MYP without eAssessment. Does that matter later?+

It matters for documentation rather than for learning. Without eAssessment the MYP produces school-reported outcomes rather than an externally examined certificate, so a receiving school or an attestation process has less external evidence to read. For the Ministry of Education equivalency route, check the Ministry's own current guidance for the IB rather than relying on any tutoring provider, including this page: the published figures we can source cover the British and American tracks, not the IB. Ask the school directly what documentation a transfer out would carry.

Who inspects private schools in Fujairah and where is the report published?+

The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Fujairah, along with Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, so you will not find a KHDA report for a Fujairah school. Dubai schools sit under KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain under ADEK, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge. If you are comparing a Fujairah school with one in Khor Fakkan or Dibba Al-Hisn, you are comparing two regulators. Ask each school directly for its most recent published judgement.

My daughter's MYP maths grade fell from six to four in one term. What causes that?+

Most often a shift in which criteria the unit assessed rather than a loss of ability. A unit weighted towards investigating patterns will expose a student who has never been taught to state and justify a general rule, even one whose calculation is reliable. Ask for the criterion breakdown on the two reports and compare them side by side. If criterion B dropped while A held, the problem is generalisation and justification, and that is a narrow fix rather than a rebuild of the year's content.

Can an MYP tutor work from my child's own school unit plans?+

That is the only sensible way to do it. MYP work is assessed against the task sheet and criterion descriptors the school issues, so a session that teaches a parallel syllabus produces a busy student and an unchanged grade. Send the unit plan, the task sheet and the last marked piece before the first session. A tutor should be asking what the teacher's feedback said and what the internal deadline is, then working behind the school rather than alongside it in competition.

Where does a tutor fit alongside the school's Personal Project supervisor?+

Behind them. The supervisor holds the formal relationship, sets the internal checkpoints and signs off the process, and a tutor should be asking what the supervisor has already said. Legitimate outside help means teaching the three criteria, testing whether the goal and success criteria are achievable, and probing reflections that have gone shallow. It does not mean supplying text, journal entries or report sections: the project must be the student's own throughout, and work showing an adult's hand is a malpractice risk for the student.

How much timetable time do the mandatory UAE subjects take from MYP options?+

Enough to notice. UAE private schools teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's published requirements calculate the time in 40-minute lesson units, advising at least 25 minutes for any mandatory-subject lesson. For an MYP 4 student carrying eight subject groups, the week is effectively full before homework. That is worth remembering when choosing a tuition slot: the later time that always works beats the earlier one that works until the first assessment week.

What is an interdisciplinary unit and why does my child find it harder?+

It is a unit assessed across two subject groups on evaluating, synthesising and reflecting. Students who are strong in both parent subjects often score poorly because they submit two parallel pieces of work instead of a single argument that needed both lenses. The mark rewards the synthesis: what the second discipline revealed that the first could not. It is one of the most teachable things in the programme, and one of the least explained, so it is worth asking the school which units are coming.

How long does work on one MYP criterion take to show in marked work?+

Usually two cycles of school assessment, which on a typical unit calendar is six to ten weeks. That is the honest answer rather than a promise: criterion marks move when the student produces a task differently, and the next task has to arrive before anyone can see it. What should be visible much earlier is the student explaining what the criterion wants in their own words. If that has not happened after three or four sessions, the approach needs changing rather than extending.

Is one-to-one online teaching suitable for an eleven-year-old in MYP 1?+

Yes, with two conditions. Keep the sessions short - forty-five minutes is usually better than an hour at that age - and keep a parent within earshot for the first few, which also tells you whether the tutor is actually teaching. Younger students do well on a shared screen because the work stays visible and can be revisited, and the written note afterwards gives a parent something concrete. What does not work at any age is a long passive session at the end of a long school day.

We may leave Fujairah before DP1. Does MYP work transfer to another school?+

The learning does; the documentation depends on both schools. MYP outcomes are school-reported unless the school offers eAssessment, so a receiving school will usually place your child on its own assessment rather than on the previous report. Ask the current school what records a transfer would carry and ask the receiving school how it places mid-course arrivals. For families whose posting may end, this is the strongest argument for an externally examined route, and it is a decision worth settling before Year 10 choices are locked.

What does MYP tutoring cost on the east coast compared with exam-year help?+

The market does not discount by programme, so the same published bands apply: budget and generalist online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, qualified subject tutors online from about AED 150 to 300, and in-home visits from AED 180 to 500 once travel is priced in. Those figures come from provider pricing and a published 2026 Dubai rate survey and are market rates, not ours. MYP families usually need fewer hours than exam-year families, because the work is a diagnosis followed by targeted practice rather than a revision programme.

Find the criterion first, then buy the teaching

The useful first step costs nothing: pull three marked MYP tasks with their task sheets and ask the school which criterion has been lowest for the longest. Bring that to a free trial lesson and an hour is usually enough to name the pattern and say how many weeks of work it needs. From MYP 1 through the Personal Project year, sessions run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, working from your child's own unit plans. Where a match is made for a subject your child intends to carry into the Diploma, the same tutor can stay with it through the transition.
