IB & IGCSE in Al Gurfa

The Diploma week is already full before tutoring arrives

Al Gurfa sits south of Fujairah city along the coast road, spread out, with most students travelling in to the city-centre schools or further afield. Households here commonly run two school journeys rather than one, which means the practical question for Diploma tutoring is not whether a specialist exists but when a session could possibly happen. Neither child tends to be at a desk before 16:30 and often not before 17:00, and the Diploma student is the one with the fullest timetable to begin with.

That matters because the Diploma is not six subjects. It is six subjects plus an Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words, a Theory of Knowledge course examined through an essay of up to 1,600 words and an exhibition with a commentary of up to 950, and a CAS programme that carries no points but blocks the award of the diploma if it is incomplete. Every one of those has deadlines, and the deadlines are set internally by the school rather than externally by the board, which means they arrive earlier than families expect and in clusters.

IB Gram delivers to Al Gurfa as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India, and that statement appears on every country page this site publishes. The practical gain is specific rather than rhetorical: an online slot does not depend on a tutor driving the coast road at seven in the evening, so the start time is a start time rather than an arrival window. Published in-home rates here run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, and some of that is the journey.

So this page maps the two things that collide. On one side the Diploma year with its internal deadline clusters, its core components and its internal assessments. On the other a real Al Gurfa week with two school runs, a long school day lengthened further by the mandatory UAE subjects, and a finite number of usable evening hours. Where those two meet is where a tutoring plan either works or quietly turns fortnightly.

A note on dates, which applies throughout. No IB session or results date appears on this page, because none could be verified from the International Baccalaureate's own site for this project. Diploma students in the UAE sit the May session; every specific date should come from your child's coordinator and the school's own calendar. The internal deadline pattern described below is a shape, not a schedule, and your school's version is the one that matters. The same applies to the component weightings quoted here: they were read from the current subject guides, guides get revised, and your child's coordinator holds the version that governs their cohort. Treat the figures as a map of where the marks sit rather than as the authority for them.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages, each with a different relationship between the school week and the tutoring week. The scheduling answer changes completely between them.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight and converted to a 1-7 grade, with a Personal Project in the final year marked out of 24 across planning, applying skills and reflecting. No terminal papers in the earlier years, so there is no exam schedule compressing the calendar.

For an Al Gurfa household this is the easiest stage to schedule, because deadlines are spread and nothing is timed. Two short sessions a week beat one long one at this age, and they survive a school run that overruns. It is also the cheapest point at which a criterion-level weakness can be fixed, which is why skipping it is expensive later.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma Programme, first year

Six subjects begin, the Extended Essay topic is chosen and a supervisor appointed, Theory of Knowledge starts, CAS begins accumulating, and the first internal assessment drafts appear. The workload is deceptive: it feels manageable until the first cluster of deadlines lands in the spring.

This is the year in which an Al Gurfa family should fix a tutoring slot and keep it, because the calendar is still flexible enough to absorb a weekly commitment. One session a week running slightly ahead of the school's scheme costs least per grade gained, and nothing in this year is yet being repaired against a deadline.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Diploma Programme, final year

Internal assessment final submissions, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, mock examinations and the May session. The deadlines cluster heavily in the autumn and early spring, which is exactly when a weekly tutoring slot is most likely to be sacrificed to them.

The trap for an Al Gurfa household is cancelling sessions during a deadline cluster and never restarting. The better move is to shorten them and change what they contain: process coaching on the piece that is due, rather than subject teaching that competes with it. Agreeing that pattern in advance prevents a term from evaporating.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, each Diploma subject is noted with how well it tolerates a compressed session, because in an Al Gurfa week that is often the deciding factor rather than the subject's difficulty.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Poor tolerance of a short session. Calculus and proof work need an uninterrupted stretch, and Paper 3 at Higher Level is an extended-response problem paper worth twenty per cent that cannot be practised in twenty-minute fragments. Protect the full hour for this subject if you protect it for any.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Moderate tolerance. Statistics and calculator technique can be drilled in shorter blocks; modelling questions requiring written interpretation in context cannot. A sensible pattern alternates between the two according to how the week has gone.

Physics

HL and SL

Mixed. Data-analysis practice for the thirty-six per cent Paper 1 works in short blocks; extended calculation and the independent investigation do not. Mathematical fluency is the hidden driver, and a Physics student who is weak algebraically needs the longer session more.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Good tolerance for recall work, poor for mechanisms. Organic conditions and definitions drill well in forty minutes; energetics calculation and the 3,000-word investigation need a clear head and a full hour. Split the week accordingly rather than treating all sessions alike.

Biology

HL and SL

The best short-session subject in the Diploma, because the content load is large and retrieval practice is what converts it. Ten-minute retrieval blocks on three evenings outperform one long revision sitting, and that is a scheduling decision rather than a teaching one.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram drills are short and repeatable; evaluation writing and the portfolio commentaries, capped at 800 words each, need room. The portfolio is three commentaries on real published articles, and drafting one is a weekend-morning job rather than a weekday-evening one.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The worst short-session subject here. Paper 1 analysis under timing, Paper 2 essay planning and the HL Essay at twenty per cent all need sustained attention. The Individual Oral, worth thirty per cent at Standard Level, is the exception and rehearses well in shorter bursts.

Business Management

HL and SL

Good tolerance when the stimulus is sent in advance. Reading the case before the session converts an hour into something closer to ninety minutes of value. Ratio and break-even calculation drills work in short blocks and are the most reliable marks on the paper.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Theory and conversion work suit short sessions; the solution-development internal assessment does not, because the documentation is assessed alongside the product and needs to be written in sustained passes rather than fragments.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Variable, and often chosen as a lighter option before being found demanding. Data handling drills short; the evaluative writing about human systems needs the same room as an essay subject. Plan it as two different subjects sharing a timetable slot.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three scheduling patterns, all delivered online and one-to-one. The right one is determined by the household's week rather than by the subject.

One protected weekday evening session

A single full-length session at a fixed hour, chosen after you have measured the household's slowest school run rather than its fastest. Used for the subjects that do not tolerate compression: mathematics at Higher Level, English A, extended calculation work. Sixty minutes starting on time beats ninety starting late.

  • Booked thirty minutes after the latest realistic arrival time
  • Same weekday and hour every week on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set at the end and marked before the following session

Two short sessions for retrieval-heavy subjects

Forty minutes twice a week instead of eighty once, for Biology content, Chemistry recall, Economics diagrams and Computer Science conversions. Frequency beats duration for retrieval, and a short session survives a coast-road delay where a long one gets abandoned.

  • Resilient to a school run that overruns
  • Suited to recall, drills and diagram accuracy
  • Not suitable for essay writing or long calculation work

A deadline-cluster mode agreed in advance

During the weeks when internal assessment and core deadlines land together, sessions shorten and change content: process coaching on the piece that is due rather than subject teaching that competes with it. Agreeing this pattern in the first Diploma year prevents the autumn of the second from erasing the arrangement entirely.

  • Session content switches to the piece that is due
  • Criteria explained and the student's own draft reviewed
  • Frequency maintained even where length is reduced

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Gurfa

01

What an Al Gurfa Diploma week actually contains

  • Household arrival time is the later of two school runs, not the earlier
  • Choose the slot for February, not for October
  • CAS is the first thing dropped and the only one that blocks the diploma
  • No tutor travels to an Al Gurfa address; delivery is online

Write out a real week before choosing an hour. A Diploma student at a Fujairah city school leaves early, has a school day lengthened by the mandatory UAE subjects that run alongside the licensed curriculum, and returns along the coast road in whatever traffic exists that afternoon. If a sibling attends a different school, the household's effective arrival time is the later of the two journeys, not the earlier. Add food and a genuine break, which is not negotiable for a seventeen-year-old, and the first usable hour is commonly 17:30 rather than the 16:30 families assume.

Against that sit the school's own demands. Homework in six subjects, not evenly distributed across the week. Internal assessment work that arrives in bursts. CAS activities that happen in the evenings or at weekends and are frequently the first thing to be dropped, which is a mistake because an incomplete CAS portfolio prevents the diploma from being awarded regardless of how many points the subjects earn. Theory of Knowledge, which generates little weekly work and then a large piece of writing.

What this means for a tutoring slot is that the hour must be chosen for the worst week rather than the best one. A slot that works in October and fails in February has not worked, because the value of weekly tutoring is cumulative: work set, work done, work marked, next session built on the marking. Break that cycle twice and the arrangement is effectively monthly, at weekly cost.

Because lessons are online, one variable disappears from the calculation entirely. Nothing depends on a tutor's drive south along the coast road in the evening, so the slot is a slot. That is not an argument about teaching quality; it is an argument about reliability, and over two Diploma years reliability is what converts hours into marks.

02

The Diploma's internal deadline clusters, term by term

Families plan around the May session and are then ambushed by the internal calendar, which is set by the school and arrives much earlier. The pattern is reasonably consistent across Diploma schools even though the exact dates differ, and knowing the shape is most of the planning. Ask your child's coordinator for the full internal calendar at the start of the first Diploma year rather than in the spring of the second, when it is being enforced rather than explained.

The clusters have a logic. The Extended Essay topic and supervisor land early in the first year because the research has to happen before the second year's workload arrives. Internal assessment planning for the sciences sits in the first year too, since research design cannot be repaired once data has been collected. Then the second year front-loads: internal assessment final drafts, the Extended Essay submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay, and the exhibition, mostly in the autumn and early spring, with mocks folded in.

The consequence for an Al Gurfa household is that the hardest weeks of the Diploma are not the ones immediately before the examinations. They are the ones in the autumn of the final year, when three or four pieces of assessed coursework are due within a month of each other and the student is also sitting mocks. That is the period when a weekly tutoring slot is most likely to be cancelled and least likely to be restarted.

Planning for it is straightforward once the clusters are visible. Keep the frequency, shorten the sessions, and change what they contain: process coaching on the piece that is due instead of subject teaching that competes with it. The table below gives the shape of a typical internal calendar; yours will differ in dates and should be obtained in writing.

03

CAS, and the hours nobody puts in the schedule

CAS carries no points and is therefore the component most often treated as optional, which is exactly backwards. An incomplete CAS portfolio prevents the diploma from being awarded, however many points the six subjects produce. A student with 38 points and an unfinished portfolio does not have a diploma, and that is a worse outcome than one with 30 points and a complete one. It is also entirely avoidable, because the requirement is about evidence and reflection rather than about achievement.

The failure mode is consistent and recognisable. Activities accumulate across two years without the reflections that evidence them, because reflections feel like paperwork while the activities feel like life. Then in the spring of the final year the student has to reconstruct a portfolio from memory while also sitting examinations. The reconstruction is harder than the original work and lands in the worst possible month.

For an Al Gurfa household there is a practical wrinkle. CAS activities often happen in the evenings or at weekends, which is also when a tutoring slot sits, and the coast road makes attending anything in the city a longer commitment than it looks. Families that schedule a CAS evening deliberately, and a tutoring evening deliberately, and keep them on different days, have fewer collisions than families that improvise both.

A tutor's role here is near zero and should be stated as such. CAS is the student's own programme and its reflections must be theirs. What a tutor can legitimately do is notice, in the first Diploma year, that the portfolio is not being kept, and tell the parent. That is a five-second intervention with a very large downside avoided, and it is one of the better arguments for a tutor who sees the student weekly across both years rather than only in the final term.

04

Two school runs, one evening: scheduling with siblings

Most scheduling advice assumes one child. An Al Gurfa household with a Diploma student and a younger sibling at a different school has a harder problem, because the evening has to accommodate two sets of homework, possibly two tutoring arrangements, and one adult's attention. Treating them as independent decisions produces collisions that nobody notices until both children are behind.

The pattern that works is to stagger rather than parallelise. The younger child's session, if there is one, sits earlier and shorter, because attention is the binding constraint at that age and forty minutes twice a week does more than eighty once. The Diploma student's session sits later and longer, because the subjects that matter most at that level do not tolerate compression. Putting both on the same evening means one of them is competing with dinner.

There is a second-order benefit to staggering that families discover by accident. A Diploma student working at 18:30 while a younger sibling has already finished creates a quieter house, and the difference in output over a term is noticeable in marked writing. The reverse arrangement, where the older student works through the household's busiest hour, produces sessions that are technically delivered and practically wasted.

The last piece is the sibling subject overlap, which is where real money gets saved. A single tutor covering mathematics for a Diploma student and for a Year 9 student is rarely a good idea, because the specifications and the required depth differ too much. Two different subjects on two different evenings with two specialists costs the same and works. The table below is the staggering pattern that holds up over a term.

STAGGERING TWO CHILDREN ACROSS AN AL GURFA WEEK

05

Boarding, commuting and keeping a tutor through a school change

Local Diploma provision in Fujairah is limited, which means a significant share of Al Gurfa students on this route are boarding, commuting weekly to another emirate, or have moved school entirely. Each of those disrupts a tutoring arrangement in a different way, and all three are survivable if the arrangement is online and planned rather than improvised.

Boarding changes the available hours rather than removing them. Boarding houses have study periods, and a fixed online session inside one of them is usually straightforward to arrange with the house staff, though it needs asking rather than assuming. Weekly commuting changes which days are usable: a student travelling on Sunday and Thursday has three reliable evenings rather than five, and the slot should be placed in the middle of that window rather than at either edge.

A full school move is the one that most often ends a tutoring arrangement, and it should not. The specification may change — a new school may enter a different board at IGCSE, or offer a different mathematics course in the Diploma — and that is worth checking immediately, because it can change the match. But the internal deadlines do not pause for a move, and a student mid-Diploma who loses both their school and their tutor in the same term has lost more continuity than either change alone would cost.

The practical instruction is short. If a move or a boarding placement is coming, say so when arranging the tutoring rather than afterwards. The slot can be positioned to survive it, the specification can be checked in advance, and the handover of the topic risk list is trivial if it is written down. Families that mention the move in week eight rather than week one lose a month to a problem that had a one-email solution.

06

Which Diploma subjects tolerate a short session, and which do not

Treating every session as sixty minutes of the same thing is the commonest planning error in a constrained week. Subjects differ enormously in how they respond to compression, and matching the format to the subject recovers time that an Al Gurfa household does not otherwise have.

Retrieval-heavy subjects thrive on frequency. Biology has the largest content load in the Diploma and the clearest evidence in favour of short, frequent retrieval work: ten-minute blocks across three evenings outperform one long sitting, and that is a scheduling decision rather than a pedagogical one. Chemistry recall, Economics diagram drills, Computer Science conversions and mathematics arithmetic fluency all behave the same way.

Subjects built on sustained production do not compress. English A analysis and essay planning, the HL Essay at twenty per cent, Higher Level mathematics problem work and Paper 3, extended Economics evaluation, and any internal assessment drafting all need an uninterrupted stretch and a student who is not already tired. For an Al Gurfa household that usually means a weekend morning rather than a weekday evening, and the quality difference in marked writing shows up within a month.

The mixed cases are worth planning rather than guessing. Physics splits cleanly: data-analysis practice for Paper 1 is short-session work; extended calculation and the investigation are not. Business Management becomes short-session work if the stimulus is sent in advance, because the reading happens outside the hour. The table sets out the split so that a family can allocate its limited evenings deliberately instead of by default.

07

What a tutor may do with the Diploma core

The core is where Al Gurfa families most often want help and where the boundary is tightest, so it deserves stating in the exact terms a tutor should be able to repeat. The Extended Essay is capped at 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay at 1,600, and the exhibition commentary at 950. Together the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge contribute up to three bonus points through a published matrix, which is often the gap between meeting an offer and missing it.

A tutor may teach the content, explain each assessment criterion in the board's own published wording, show how a comparable piece is constructed, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach the student how to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the Extended Essay, draft the Theory of Knowledge essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become the tutor's. The distinction is who produced the sentences, and it is not a matter of degree.

The commonest legitimate intervention is also the most valuable and the least glamorous: narrowing a research question. A student chooses an Extended Essay topic because it interests them, discovers at the first draft that the available sources cannot support it, and loses a term. A tutor who spends one session turning a broad question into a researchable one has done more for the grade than ten sessions of content teaching later. The same applies to the science investigation, where research design cannot be repaired once the data exists.

A page in this search result sells completed internal assessment work at a fixed price. Under the board's rules, submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice, and the finding lands on the student. For the record, IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge or the Sharjah Private Education Authority; it holds no such relationship, claims none, and runs no UAE premises.

08

Fujairah's regulator, and what it means for an Al Gurfa family

Private schools in Fujairah are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than by an emirate-level authority, and families moving in from elsewhere in the country notice the difference. Dubai's private schools answer to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Abu Dhabi's and Al Ain's to the Department of Education and Knowledge, Sharjah's to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, and Ras Al Khaimah's to its Department of Knowledge. The ministry supervises Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

That changes where things are looked up and who approves what. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, which is a wider remit than inspection alone. For an Al Gurfa household with a child boarding or commuting into Sharjah, the school is operating under a different approval regime from the one their sibling's Fujairah school uses, and term dates occasionally misalign as a result.

Underneath all of it sits one federal rule that explains the length of the school day described earlier on this page. Private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must follow the ministry's general regulations. That is why a Diploma student in Al Gurfa carries subjects a Diploma student in Europe does not, and why the week that tutoring has to fit into is fuller than the programme's own timetable suggests.

None of this is an argument for or against anything. It is the information a parent needs to read the right document, ask the right office and plan around the right calendar, and it is absent from every competitor page researched for this market: Abu Dhabi's regulator is named by none of them, Sharjah's by one, and Fujairah by nobody at all.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Gurfa

Al Gurfa and the districts around it, compared on the household logistics that decide a usable session hour rather than on amenities.

Al Gurfa

South of the city along the coast road, dispersed, with households frequently running two school journeys. Neither child tends to be at a desk before 16:30, which sets the realistic Diploma slot window at 17:30 to 20:30.

Fujairah City centre

Most of the emirate's private-school capacity, so the shortest afternoon in Fujairah. A student schooling locally can realistically start at 16:30, which is an hour of advantage over an Al Gurfa household across a week.

Al Faseel

Coastal, near the corniche and the port, roughly fifteen minutes from the city schools. Earlier starts than Al Gurfa and a single school run more often, which makes a weekday evening slot easier to hold.

Merashid

Established residential district with a short but variable city run. Similar scheduling pressure to Al Gurfa when two children are involved, and the same thin specialist supply at Higher Level.

Sakamkam

Inland and north-west with the longest afternoon return of the inner districts. Session starts move to 17:30 and the usable evening narrows, which matters most during a deadline cluster.

Dibba Al Fujairah

Around ninety minutes north, with the fewest local secondary options in the emirate. Boarding and long commutes are the norm, so tutoring is planned around travel days rather than around a weekly rhythm.

Khor Fakkan

A Sharjah enclave on this coastline, so its schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Term dates follow Sharjah's calendar, which occasionally misaligns with a Fujairah sibling's.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Write out one real week before choosing an hour

Both school runs, the later arrival time, food and a genuine break, and the nights homework is heaviest. Then book the slot thirty minutes after the latest realistic arrival. Choose for February rather than October, because a slot that fails in the busy term has not worked at all.

  2. 02

Get the coordinator's internal deadline calendar

The whole thing, at the start of the first Diploma year. Internal deadlines are set by the school, arrive in clusters, and land hardest in the autumn of the final year alongside mocks. That is the period a weekly slot gets cancelled, and knowing it is coming is how the arrangement survives it.

  3. 03

Match format to subject, not to habit

Retrieval-heavy subjects get two short sessions a week; sustained-production subjects get one protected full session or a weekend morning. Biology and Chemistry recall behave differently from Higher Level mathematics and English A, and allocating the same hour to both wastes one of them.

  4. 04

Run the free trial lesson in the real slot

The same weekday and hour you intend to keep, not a convenient demonstration time. It tells you whether your child can work then, which is a different question from whether the tutor can explain. Both are being tested, and the first is the better predictor of whether this lasts.

  5. 05

Agree the deadline-cluster pattern in advance

When internal assessments and core deadlines land together, sessions shorten and switch to process coaching on the piece that is due. Settling that in the first year prevents the autumn of the second from erasing the arrangement entirely and then never restarting it.

  6. 06

Say early if a move or boarding is coming

The slot can be positioned to survive a weekly commute, the specification can be checked in case the new school enters a different board, and the topic risk list hands over trivially if it is written down. Mentioned in week one it is an email; mentioned in week eight it costs a month.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The slot chosen for the hardest week

An Al Gurfa household's arrival time is the later of two school runs, and a slot that works in October and fails in February has not worked. Weekly tutoring is cumulative, so the hour is chosen against the worst week rather than the most convenient one.

Internal deadlines mapped, not just exam dates

The Diploma's hardest weeks are in the autumn of the final year, when coursework clusters collide with mocks. That calendar is set by the school and is obtainable in the first year. Knowing the shape is most of the planning and it is absent from every page in this market.

CAS flagged before it becomes a crisis

An incomplete portfolio blocks the diploma regardless of points, and the usual failure is activities without reflections. A tutor who sees the student weekly across both years can notice it in the first one, which is a five-second intervention against a very large downside.

Format matched to the subject

Biology retrieval wants frequency; Higher Level mathematics and English A want an uninterrupted hour and a rested student. Allocating limited evenings deliberately recovers time an Al Gurfa household does not otherwise have, and the split is set out rather than left to guesswork.

Built to survive boarding, commuting and a school move

Local Diploma capacity in Fujairah is limited, so many students on this route change school, board or travel weekly. An online slot survives all three, and the handover of a written topic risk list is trivial. The internal deadlines do not pause for any of it.

The core boundary stated in the board's terms

Teaching, criteria, feedback on the student's own draft, and the 4,000, 1,600 and 950 word caps checked before drafting. Not writing, not completing, not supplying. A page in this search result sells finished internal assessments and the candidate carries that risk.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Gurfa: your questions answered

What time can an Al Gurfa household realistically hold a Diploma session?+

Usually between 17:30 and 20:30, and the determining factor is the later of two school runs rather than the earlier. Al Gurfa sits south of the city along the coast road and households here frequently run two journeys, so neither child tends to be at a desk before 16:30 and often not before 17:00. Add food and a real break and the first usable hour is later than families assume. Book thirty minutes after the latest realistic arrival, measured over a week.

Does an IB tutor travel to Al Gurfa?+

Not through IB Gram. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are not offered anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. The in-home market here is real, with published rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, and part of the premium is the journey. The practical cost of a journey along the coast road is that an arrival time is not a start time.

When do IB internal deadlines actually fall?+

They are set by the school rather than the board, and they cluster. The Extended Essay topic and supervisor land early in the first year, science investigation planning sits in the first year because research design cannot be fixed after data collection, and the heaviest cluster is the autumn of the final year, when coursework finals and the Extended Essay submission collide with mock examinations. Ask your child's coordinator for the whole internal calendar at the start of the first Diploma year.

Why does CAS matter if it carries no points?+

Because an incomplete CAS portfolio prevents the diploma from being awarded however many points the six subjects produce. A student with 38 points and an unfinished portfolio has no diploma; a student with 30 points and a complete one does. The usual failure is accumulating activities without the reflections that evidence them, then reconstructing the portfolio in the spring of the final year while sitting examinations. Scheduling a deliberate CAS evening, separate from any tutoring evening, prevents most of it.

Which Diploma subjects can be taught in a forty-minute session?+

Retrieval-heavy ones. Biology content, Chemistry organic conditions and definitions, Economics diagram drills, Computer Science conversions and arithmetic fluency all respond better to frequency than to duration. What does not compress is sustained production: English A analysis and essay planning, the HL Essay, Higher Level mathematics problem work including Paper 3, and any coursework drafting. Those need an uninterrupted hour and a student who is not already tired, which usually means a weekend morning.

How should a household with two children schedule tutoring?+

Stagger rather than parallelise. The younger child goes earlier and shorter, because attention is the binding constraint at that age and two forty-minute sessions beat one long one. The Diploma student goes later and longer, because the subjects that matter at that level do not tolerate compression. Putting both on the same evening means one competes with dinner. A quieter house at 18:30 produces measurably better written work over a term.

Can one tutor cover maths for a Diploma student and a Year 9 sibling?+

It is usually a false economy. The specifications and the depth required differ too much, and the session that suffers is whichever one the tutor is less current in. Two specialists on two different evenings generally costs the same and works, because each is matched to a single course. The scheduling convenience is real but small, and it tends to be outweighed within a term by the gap in subject currency between a Diploma course and a lower-secondary one.

What happens to tutoring if my child starts boarding outside Fujairah?+

It continues, provided the slot is placed inside a study period and the house staff know about it, which needs asking rather than assuming. Because local Diploma provision in Fujairah is limited, boarding and weekly commuting are common on this route, and an online slot survives both. A weekly commuter has three reliable evenings rather than five, so the slot should sit in the middle of that window instead of at either edge.

Should we cancel sessions during a deadline cluster?+

Shorten them and change their content instead. During the weeks when internal assessments and core deadlines land together, a session that teaches subject content competes with the piece that is due. A session that explains the criteria and reviews the student's own draft supports it. Keeping the frequency while reducing the length preserves the weekly cycle, which is what makes the arrangement worth anything. Cancelling twice usually means it never restarts.

What may a tutor do with an Extended Essay for an Al Gurfa student?+

Explain the criteria in the board's own wording, help narrow a broad research question into one the available sources can support, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it. A tutor may not write the essay or draft sections of it. The cap is 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay is capped at 1,600 and the exhibition commentary at 950, and together the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge contribute up to three bonus points.

Why is the Fujairah school day longer than the Diploma timetable suggests?+

Because private schools in the UAE must teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside whichever curriculum they are licensed for, under the ministry's general regulations. That adds to the week rather than replacing anything, so a Diploma student in Al Gurfa carries more timetabled hours than one following the same programme elsewhere. The practical consequence is a later realistic session slot and less tolerance for a second weekly commitment in the same subject.

Who regulates my child's school if we board them in Sharjah?+

The Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in that emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Fujairah's private schools are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education instead, alongside Ajman's and Umm Al Quwain's. A household with one child in each system is dealing with two approval regimes and occasionally two term calendars, which is worth knowing before booking anything that assumes a shared holiday.

Should the trial lesson be at a convenient hour or the one we plan to use?+

The one you plan to use. A trial at a convenient time tells you whether the tutor can explain; a trial at 18:30 on the Wednesday you intend to book tells you whether your child can work then, which is the question that decides whether the arrangement lasts a term. Run it in the real slot with yourself able to listen in, and judge the explanation and your child's alertness together rather than separately.

What should I ask for after the first month in an Al Gurfa arrangement?+

Two things: the updated topic risk list from the diagnostic, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged and the marked work behind it, and an honest answer about whether the slot is holding. If sessions have started late three times, the slot is wrong and should move rather than being tolerated. Those two questions catch both failure modes in this household type: the wrong content and the wrong hour, which are fixed differently.

Map the week, then get the internal calendar

For an Al Gurfa household the two documents that matter are the household's own week and the school's internal deadline calendar. Write out both school runs and the later arrival time, then book the slot thirty minutes after it. Ask your child's coordinator for the full internal calendar at the start of the first Diploma year, and agree now what sessions will contain during a deadline cluster. Run the free trial lesson in the real slot. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, shifting later during Ramadan by agreement. Nobody is sent to an Al Gurfa address.
