IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Gurfa

The question behind a search for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Gurfa is rarely about distance. It is whether anybody reachable actually knows the specification: the papers, the topic-to-paper mapping, how a raw mark becomes a grade, and what a resit is worth. This page answers all four, and explains how to tell within one lesson. IB Gram teaches Al Gurfa students one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched to one syllabus code, with the papers named in writing
  • Progress reported as marks on marked scripts, not as confidence
  • Resit options explained component by component before you commit

IB & IGCSE in Al Gurfa

Knowing the subject and knowing the specification are different jobs

Al Gurfa stretches south of Fujairah city along the coast road, and most students here travel in to the city-centre schools. The tutoring question families end up asking is not geographical. It is whether anybody they can reach actually knows the thing their child is sitting, because a graduate chemist and a person who has marked Cambridge 0620 Extended scripts are not the same professional, and only one of them can tell you where the marks are going.

The distinction has a test. Somebody who knows the specification can name the papers and their weightings without pausing, say whether a practical component exists on that board, map a topic to the paper it appears in, explain why a raw mark is not a grade until the board sets boundaries after marking, and tell you what a November resit is worth component by component. Somebody who knows the subject in general can do none of those and will instead talk about confidence, potential and the importance of past papers. Both sound equally reassuring on a phone call, which is why the test matters.

This page is built around those checkable things. Grade boundaries, explained properly rather than guessed at. Topic-to-paper mapping, which schools rarely hand out and which turns a vague revision plan into a targeted one. What progress evidence looks like when it is real. How resits actually work, since both boards run a November series and most families treat it as a last resort rather than a plan. And the three documents to extract from the school before paying anybody.

IB Gram delivers to Al Gurfa as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India, stated the same way on every country page here. The in-home market is real and publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. In a small emirate the premium buys a shorter list of specifications somebody has actually taught, which is the opposite of what a family is trying to buy.

One structural anchor to carry through. Cambridge International runs International GCSE in a June series and a November series, and those are the two a UAE candidate sits; the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel runs International GCSE in May/June and November. Every date specific to your child should come from the exams officer's own timetable rather than from any third-party page, this one included. Where this page cites a date it is a past one, kept with its year because that is what makes it checkable, and where a session is still ahead it is named by month only so the page does not go stale without anybody touching it. No grade boundary figure appears anywhere here, for the same reason: boundaries belong to the boards, they move every series, and a number quoted second-hand will eventually be wrong.

At a glance

  • A specialist names the papers and weightings without pausing
  • Grade boundaries are set per series, after marking, by the board
  • Topic-to-paper mapping turns revision into targeting
  • Both boards run a November series, so a resit costs months not a year
  • Lessons to Al Gurfa are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages, and at each one a different document is the one that matters. Getting the right paper out of the school is most of the work.

YR 9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Before the entry decisions

Checkpoint tests in March, May and October windows, used by schools for setting rather than for anything external, followed by the options form. Tier placement in mathematics and the sciences is usually settled here on the basis of internal evidence and a teacher's judgement.

The document to obtain at this stage is the options form itself, with the tier implications written down. A Cambridge Core entry is assessed on a narrower syllabus and cannot be awarded above grade C, which removes the top four grades before teaching starts. In a small school market placements tend to be cautious, and the window to change one is Year 9 rather than Year 11.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Eight or nine subjects over two years, assessed almost entirely by terminal paper, with coursework in some subjects and a board-dependent practical arrangement in the sciences. Grades report as 9-1 or A*-G depending on the syllabus version the school entered.

The document to obtain here is the entry confirmation, which carries the syllabus code per subject. Cambridge codes are four digits; Pearson Edexcel codes look like 4MA1 or 4PH1. A school can enter different boards for different subjects in the same certificate set, and nobody necessarily mentions it at home.

RESITAges 15-17

The November series as a plan

Both boards run a November series alongside the main summer one, so a single-subject resit costs months rather than a year. Whether a whole subject must be retaken or only one component depends on the board's rules for that specification, which is a question for the exams officer.

The document here is the board's own resit rules for the subject, which the exams officer can confirm. For a sense of the shape, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Those are backward-looking citations; for an upcoming series, work from the live official timetable.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level or IB Diploma afterwards

Both gate on IGCSE grades in the same subject, usually at a B or better. That is the real reason a Year 10 tier decision reaches two years forward, and why a grade that looks adequate on a certificate can still close a door.

Downstream, the Ministry of Education's sourced British-track rule applies: five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Verify your own case through the ministry's own channel.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each subject below, the topic-to-paper detail that a tutor who has taught the specification will know and a general subject graduate usually will not.

Mathematics (0580 / 0980; Edexcel 4MA1)

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Cambridge splits the entry between a non-calculator and a calculator paper at half the grade each; Edexcel 4MA1 runs two calculator papers at 50% apiece across Foundation and Higher tier. The method-mark structure is the thing to know: a written method earns marks even when the final answer is wrong.

Physics (0625; Edexcel 4PH1)

Core and Extended

On Cambridge, a multiple-choice paper at 30%, theory at 50% and a practical component at 20% sat as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Edexcel has no separate practical exam. Circuit behaviour under load and sign conventions carry the predictable losses.

Chemistry (0620; Edexcel 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole calculations needing two conversions sit on the theory paper; the exact wording of ion and gas tests appears across both theory and the practical component. Organic conditions are pure recall and recoverable in two sessions, which is why a specialist goes there first.

Biology (0610; Edexcel 4BI1)

Core and Extended

The largest content load in the sciences. The highest-volume avoidable loss is answering describe where the question said explain, which appears on every paper and is a notation habit rather than a knowledge gap.

English as a First Language (0500; Edexcel 4EA1)

Core and Extended

Reading and writing papers rather than literature. The summary question penalises phrasing lifted from the passage because the marks are for the student's own words, and directed writing is marked against register and audience as much as accuracy.

Economics (0455; Edexcel 4EC1)

Core and Extended

Diagram marks are awarded individually: labelled axes, correct initial position, correct direction of shift, new equilibrium identified. Prose cannot recover a wrong diagram, which makes diagram drilling unusually efficient per hour spent.

Business Studies (0450; Edexcel 4BS1)

Core and Extended

One paper is built on a case-study insert and the insert decides the answer. The dominant error in scripts is a correct textbook point applied to a business the insert does not describe, which is a reading failure rather than a content one.

Computer Science (0478; Edexcel 4CP0)

Core and Extended

Two papers: systems theory, and algorithms with programming. Pseudocode is marked on logic rather than syntax. Binary, hexadecimal and two's complement conversion appear every series and should be drilled to automatic accuracy early.

Geography (0460; Edexcel 4GE1)

Core and Extended

Skills questions on maps, graphs and photographs are the dependable marks; case studies decide the grade. A named example with figures scores where a generic description does not, and Fujairah's own coastline and water scarcity are usable material.

Additional and International Mathematics (0606 / 0607)

Extended only

0607 International Mathematics carries an investigation paper no other maths syllabus has, and is often the choice at schools feeding into the IB. 0606 bridges to A Level. Both reward a fully written method and punish an answer that arrives without one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run IGCSE support, all online and one-to-one. The first two are ordinary; the third exists because an undecided family deserves evidence before a commitment.

Weekly teaching against one specification

One session a week in one subject at one tier, aligned to the school's scheme of work and ideally slightly ahead of it so each topic is met twice. The specification is named in writing at the start, which is how a mismatch gets caught in week one rather than week ten.

  • Syllabus code confirmed before the first session
  • Fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next one

Topic-to-paper targeting before a series

Six to eight sessions driven by a mapping of the student's weak topics onto the papers they appear in, so the hours go where the marks are rather than where the anxiety is. Built from a diagnostic paper rather than from a topic list the student volunteers.

  • Opens with a full paper under exam timing
  • Losses attributed to one of six causes, counted
  • Each week closes a named topic on a named paper

A diagnostic with no further commitment

One or two sessions producing a document about your child that you keep regardless of what happens next: a timed paper, marked against the official scheme, with losses grouped by cause. It can be taken to any other tutor, and its specificity is the clearest evidence of whether this one knows the specification.

  • Marked against the official scheme, not a model answer
  • Narrow named topics rather than broad advice
  • Yours to keep and to compare against anybody else's

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Gurfa

01

What knowing the specification means, in testable terms

  • The syllabus code is confirmed in writing before the first session
  • Cambridge sciences: 20% practical component; Edexcel: none separate
  • Four questions, under two minutes, to test specification knowledge
  • No tutor travels to an Al Gurfa address; delivery is online

Through IB Gram, an IGCSE home tutor for an Al Gurfa student means a specialist matched to one syllabus code, teaching one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly hour on Gulf Standard Time. Nobody is sent to the door: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, and home visits exist only in India. What makes the match worth anything is the code, so it is confirmed in writing before the first session rather than assumed.

The reason to insist on that is that the two boards diverge in ways a general subject teacher will not anticipate. On Cambridge science syllabuses a practical component carries twenty per cent of the grade, sat either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses which. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam; the same skills are examined inside the written papers. A term spent preparing for a component your child is not sitting is a term gone, and the mistake is invisible until results.

Four questions settle competence quickly and none of them requires you to know the answers. What are the components and what is each worth. Does a practical exam exist on this specification. Which paper does this topic appear in. And what does a raw mark of, say, fifty-two actually mean before the board sets boundaries. A person who has taught the course answers each in a sentence. A person who has not describes their approach, which is a different kind of answer and is itself the information.

Everything below expands those four. The grade-boundary section is the one most families have never had explained, and it changes how a mock result should be read. The topic-to-paper section is the one that changes how revision is planned. Both are free to ask about and neither appears on any competitor page researched for this market.

02

Why a raw mark is not a grade, and what a mock result really tells you

Parents read a mock percentage as if it were a grade, and tutors who do not know better encourage it. It is not one. On both boards the grade boundaries for a series are set by the board after that series has been marked, taking account of how the cohort performed and how the paper behaved, and they are published after results. A raw mark therefore has no fixed grade attached to it until that happens. The same mark can fall either side of a boundary in two different series.

That has three practical consequences for an Al Gurfa family. First, a mock graded against last year's boundaries is an estimate, not a result, and should be described that way. Second, a student sitting two marks below a boundary is not two marks from a grade in any reliable sense, because the boundary will move. Third, the useful number out of a mock is not the percentage at all. It is the distribution of lost marks across causes and topics, which is stable information and can be acted on.

This is also why a tutor who talks only in predicted grades is giving you less than one who talks in marks. A grade prediction compresses everything into one letter and hides where the marks went. A marked script with losses attributed to six causes — content not known, content known but not recalled under pressure, question misread, command term misread, method correct but not written out, time ran out — tells you what to do next, and the remedies for those six are genuinely different from one another.

A note on the documents themselves: grade-boundary tables, mark schemes and past papers belong to Cambridge and Pearson. A provider distributing them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material. The right practice is to reference them and point a parent to the official source, which is also where the actual boundaries for a past series can be read. No boundary figures appear on this page for that reason, and because a figure quoted second-hand is a figure that will eventually be wrong.

HOW TO READ A MOCK RESULT PROPERLY
What you are shownWhat it actually isWhat to ask for instead
A percentageA raw mark with no grade attached until boundaries are setThe mark broken down by question and topic
A predicted gradeAn estimate against a previous series' boundariesThe distribution of lost marks across the six causes

An improved attitudeReal but not yet a gradeMarked work under timing from two different weeks
A completed past paperFamiliarity, if it was not timed and marked to the schemeThe same paper sat to time and marked against the official scheme
03

Topic-to-paper mapping: the thing schools rarely hand out

Revision plans usually list topics. Papers do not. A topic appears on a particular paper, in a particular question style, worth a particular number of marks, and the same topic can be worth four marks on one paper and twelve on another. A student revising a topic without knowing where it lands is revising for an unspecified audience, which is why so much revision produces familiarity rather than marks.

Mapping fixes this and takes one session. The tutor takes the student's weak topics from the diagnostic, places each on the paper it appears in, notes the typical question style and mark allocation, and ranks them by marks at stake rather than by how uncomfortable the student feels. The output is a list in which the top item is worth doing first for a reason the student can see, which also solves most motivation problems without a conversation about motivation.

The ranking frequently surprises families. A topic the student hates may be worth six marks across the whole entry, while a topic they are mildly shaky on carries thirty. On the Cambridge sciences, where a multiple-choice paper carries thirty per cent, elimination technique is itself worth more than several individual topics and is almost never taught. On mathematics, the discipline of writing out a method earns marks across every structured question on both papers, which makes it the highest-value single behaviour change available.

Schools do not usually produce this document, not out of reluctance but because it is per-student work. It is exactly the kind of thing a tutor should produce in the first fortnight, and exactly the kind of thing to ask for when deciding whether somebody knows the specification. A tutor who cannot map a topic to a paper has not taught the course, whatever else they know about the subject.

What real progress evidence looks like after a month

Four weeks in, an Al Gurfa family should be able to see whether the hours are converting. The evidence is not a report and not a feeling. It is the diagnostic's topic list, updated, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged, and the marked work that justifies each marking. That document takes a tutor ten minutes to produce if they have been working from it, and cannot be produced at all if they have not.

An item marked closed should have evidence attached: the same question type answered correctly twice in a row under timing, in two different weeks. One correct answer is luck. Two under timing a fortnight apart is a closed topic. An item marked improving should show a mark that moved on comparable questions. An item unchanged after three weeks is a conversation, not a failure, and the conversation is about method rather than effort.

What should not count as progress evidence, however sincerely reported: improved confidence, better engagement, a willingness to attempt harder questions, or a completed stack of past papers. All four are pleasant and none is a grade. They are often genuine precursors to improvement and they are also exactly what a tutor says when there is nothing measurable to report, which is why a parent needs the marked work rather than the summary.

The review cadence that works is monthly, not termly. A term is long enough for an arrangement to drift entirely, and by the time a term-end report arrives the remaining time has shrunk. Monthly, with the list and the scripts, catches both failure modes early: the wrong content, and the wrong slot. In an Al Gurfa household where the coast road and two school runs compress the evening, the second is at least as common as the first.

PROGRESS EVIDENCE: WHAT COUNTS AND WHAT DOES NOT

05

Resitting properly: whole subject, one component, or wait

Most families treat a resit as a failure and a last resort. It is better treated as one of several planned options, because both boards run a November series alongside the main summer one, which means a single-subject resit costs months rather than a year. Cambridge runs June and November for International GCSE; Pearson Edexcel runs May/June and November. Deciding in advance what you would do if one subject goes wrong removes the panic from August.

The real question is what has to be retaken. Depending on the board's rules for the specification, a candidate may be able to resit a single component or may have to retake the whole subject, and that distinction completely changes the cost and the preparation. The exams officer can confirm it for your child's specification in one conversation, and it is worth having that conversation before results rather than after, when every family is asking at once.

Three things then decide whether a resit is worthwhile. First, whether the grade is actually blocking something: a post-16 subject prerequisite, or one of the five passes needed for British-track equivalency, where Arabic and Islamic education do not count towards the five. Second, whether the diagnostic shows a short specific list of causes or gaps across the syllabus, because the first is fixable in a November window and the second usually is not. Third, whether the student has the appetite for it alongside starting a post-16 course.

For a sense of the timetable shape, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026, while June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day. Those are backward-looking citations kept with their dates because that is what makes them checkable. For any upcoming series, use the live official timetable through the exams officer, and remember that Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six zones with its own timetable version.

06

The three documents to get from the school before booking anybody

  • Entry confirmation: syllabus code, tier, and the science component entered
  • Dates: final entry deadline, mock window, the correct zone timetable
  • The last marked assessment, with the mark breakdown
  • Ten minutes of asking replaces two or three sessions of discovery

Everything on this page becomes actionable with three pieces of paper, all free, all obtainable with two emails to the school. Families routinely book a tutor first and collect these later, which is the wrong order, because two of the three can invalidate a match.

The first is the entry confirmation, which carries the syllabus code per subject and the tier. This is the document that prevents the expensive mistake: booking a Cambridge 0625 tutor for a child entered on Pearson 4PH1, or an Extended specialist for a Core-tier candidate. It also tells you, for the Cambridge sciences, whether the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper has been entered, which are two different pieces of preparation.

The second is the dates sheet: the final entry deadline, the mock window, and the exams officer's own copy of the timetable for the correct Cambridge zone. Entry deadlines fall months before the papers and are not published anywhere a parent naturally looks, and a subject never entered cannot be sat however well prepared the student is. The timetable matters because Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version for the centre's zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

The third is the last marked assessment with the mark scheme, or at least the mark breakdown. This is what lets a tutor map topics to papers in the first session instead of the third, and it is also the document against which a diagnostic can be compared. Together the three take ten minutes of a parent's time and save several sessions of discovery, which at market rates of roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor is a worthwhile trade.

07

When Al Gurfa's local supply runs out

Sometimes the honest answer to a near-me search is that nobody locally has taught the specification. Fujairah's private-school sector is small, and for Extended-tier Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science or Business Studies the number of people within a reasonable drive of Al Gurfa who have taught that course recently can be zero. The in-home premium of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour does not change that number, and it is worth saying so plainly because no page researched for this market does.

Removing geography from the problem is the only move that changes the outcome rather than the convenience. Online one-to-one delivery replaces who lives nearby with who has taught the specification. That argument is strongest exactly where this market's pages are silent: Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain are named by none of the sixty-odd competitor pages read for this research, which were written for Dubai and Abu Dhabi and extended elsewhere by substituting a place name.

Even with geography removed, availability is finite and should be disclosed rather than implied. Core and Extended mathematics, the separate sciences, and English as a first language staff quickly. Economics, Business Studies and Computer Science at Extended tier take longer. A minority subject in one specific evening slot sometimes cannot be filled, and the correct response then is a realistic timeframe, a different slot, or a straight no with the reason attached.

Ask every provider what happens if the slot cannot be filled, this one included. An answer that promises everything always and immediately, in a market this size, has answered a different question. The useful answer names a limit, and a limit is information a parent can plan around.

08

Materials, coursework and the position of this site

Specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the property of Cambridge and Pearson. A provider handing them out as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and where a paper is unreleased it is a malpractice exposure as well. The correct practice is to reference the document, cite the official address and link out, so a parent reads the authoritative version rather than a summary. That applies to everything factual on this page.

Where a school has entered a coursework component, the line is authorship. A tutor may teach the content, explain the assessment criteria in the board's own wording, show how a comparable task is approached, read a draft the student has written and name where it falls short, and teach the student to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the coursework, draft the assignment, or edit a piece to completion so that the sentences become theirs. A page in this search result sells finished assessed work outright, and the consequence of that lands on the candidate.

There is one more rule a parent in Al Gurfa should know before approaching a teacher privately. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the private tuition work permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's school. Treat that as press-reported rather than exact regulatory wording and check the current policy, but the principle holds nationally.

And the position of this site, stated because the claim circulates in this market and because every check on this page should be applied here too. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by Cambridge International, Pearson, the International Baccalaureate, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, runs no premises in the UAE, publishes no star rating, and quotes no statistic without its sample and date.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Gurfa

Al Gurfa and the districts around it, compared on what a family can actually find locally. The pattern is the useful part: the answer does not change as you move along the coast.

Al Gurfa

South of the city along the coast road, dispersed, with most students travelling in. Specialist supply at Extended tier is the same as everywhere else in the emirate, which is to say thin, so the second filter has to be competence rather than distance.

Fujairah City centre

Most of the emirate's private-school capacity and the widest local subject range. The best local odds of finding somebody who has taught a specification, and still narrow against Sharjah or Dubai.

Merashid

Established residential district drawing on the same teacher pool. Demand runs to Extended-tier sciences and mathematics, which is exactly the band where that pool runs out first.

Al Faseel

Coastal, close to the corniche and the port, roughly fifteen minutes from the city schools. Shorter commute, identical shortlist, which is the finding that makes a near-me search unhelpful here.

Sakamkam

Inland and north-west with the longest afternoon return of the inner districts. Scheduling is harder; the availability of a specification specialist is no different.

Dibba Al Fujairah

Around ninety minutes north and with the fewest local secondary options in Fujairah. For a family here, specification questions are the entire selection process because proximity offers nothing.

Khor Fakkan

A Sharjah enclave on this coast, so its schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority rather than the federal Ministry of Education. The board entered may differ; the verification method does not.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Gurfa

Fujairah city, serving Al Gurfa and the southern coast

Most Al Gurfa students attend one of the schools in and around Fujairah city. The exams officer at any of them can confirm the syllabus code per subject in a sentence, which is the single most useful question a parent can ask before paying for tutoring.

  • Our Own English High School, Fujairah
  • Fujairah Private Academy
  • Al Ameer English School, Fujairah

Sharjah options within commuting range

Families looking for a wider IGCSE offer go west and north. Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods rather than only inspecting, and a move there can also change which board is entered for a subject.

  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Australian International School, Sharjah
  • Delhi Private School, Sharjah

Schools are named only as context for the Fujairah and wider UAE school system. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named here, and no rating for any of them is stated or implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Collect the three documents first

Entry confirmation with the syllabus code and tier, the dates sheet with the entry deadline and the correct zone timetable, and the last marked assessment with its mark breakdown. Ten minutes of emailing the school replaces two or three sessions of discovery at market rates.

  2. 02

Test specification knowledge in four questions

Components and weightings. Whether a practical exam exists on this board. Which paper a named topic appears in. What a raw mark means before boundaries are set. You do not need the answers; you need to notice the difference between a sentence and a paragraph about approach.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep

Not a convenient demonstration hour. The real weekday and time, with you able to listen in, because an Al Gurfa evening compressed by the coast road and two school runs is the actual constraint. Watch whether the tutor asks which board before teaching anything.

  4. 04

Diagnostic and a topic-to-paper map in the first fortnight

A paper sat to time, marked against the official scheme, losses attributed to six causes, then each weak topic placed on the paper it appears in and ranked by marks at stake. A tutor who cannot produce that map has not taught the specification.

  5. 05

Review monthly with the list and the scripts

Each topic marked closed, improving or unchanged, with the marked work behind it. Closed means the same question type correct twice under timing in two different weeks. Unchanged after three weeks is a method conversation rather than an effort one.

  6. 06

Decide the resit position before results, not after

Ask the exams officer now whether your child's specification allows a single-component resit or requires the whole subject, and note the November entry deadline. Deciding in advance what you would do if one subject goes wrong removes the panic from the week results arrive.

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 are both International GCSE Physics and differ on practical assessment entirely. The code is confirmed before the first session, which is how a mismatch surfaces in week one rather than at results, when it is unfixable.

Grade boundaries explained rather than implied

Boundaries are set per series by the board after marking, so a raw mark carries no fixed grade and a mock percentage is an estimate. That changes how a mock should be read, and no competitor page researched for this market explains it at all.

Topic-to-paper mapping, ranked by marks at stake

A topic can be worth four marks on one paper and thirty across an entry, and the ranking frequently surprises families. Mapping turns revision into targeting and solves most motivation problems without a conversation about motivation.

Progress reported as marks, not as confidence

A closed topic means the same question type correct twice under timing in two different weeks, with the scripts attached. Improved confidence and a stack of completed papers are pleasant and are not evidence that a grade is moving.

The resit treated as a plan, not a failure

Both boards run a November series, so a single-subject resit costs months rather than a year, and whether one component or the whole subject must be retaken depends on the specification. That is a question for the exams officer before results, not after.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Gurfa: your questions answered

How can I tell whether a tutor really knows my child's IGCSE specification?+

Ask four questions and listen for specificity rather than for the answers. What are the components and what is each worth. Does a practical exam exist on this board. Which paper does this topic appear in. What does a raw mark mean before the board sets boundaries. Somebody who has taught the course answers each in a sentence; somebody who knows only the subject describes their teaching approach instead. That difference is observable without any subject knowledge of your own.

Does an IGCSE tutor come to our house in Al Gurfa?+

Not through IB Gram. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are not offered anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. A local in-home market does exist, with published rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. In a small emirate the premium tends to buy a shorter list of specifications somebody has actually taught, which is the reverse of what a family wants.

Why is my child's mock percentage not a grade?+

Because grade boundaries are set by the board after each series has been marked, taking account of how the cohort and the paper performed, and are published after results. A raw mark therefore has no fixed grade attached until that happens, and the same mark can fall either side of a boundary in different series. A mock graded against a previous series' boundaries is an estimate. The useful output of a mock is the distribution of lost marks across causes and topics, which is stable.

What is topic-to-paper mapping and why should I ask for it?+

It places each of your child's weak topics on the paper it appears in, notes the question style and typical mark allocation, and ranks them by marks at stake rather than by how uncomfortable they feel. A topic can be worth four marks on one paper and thirty across an entry, and the ranking often surprises families. It takes one session, schools rarely produce it because it is per-student work, and a tutor who cannot do it has not taught the specification.

What should count as progress evidence after four weeks?+

The diagnostic's topic list, updated, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged, and the marked work that justifies each marking. Closed means the same question type answered correctly twice under timing in two different weeks; one correct answer is luck. Improved confidence, better engagement and a stack of completed past papers are pleasant and are not evidence. Review monthly rather than termly, because a term is long enough for an arrangement to drift entirely.

Which three documents should I get from the school before booking a tutor?+

The entry confirmation, which carries the syllabus code and tier per subject and, for the Cambridge sciences, which practical component was entered. The dates sheet with the final entry deadline, the mock window and the exams officer's own timetable for the correct Cambridge zone. And the last marked assessment with its mark breakdown. Ten minutes of emailing replaces two or three sessions of discovery, and two of the three can invalidate a match outright.

Can my child resit only one paper rather than the whole IGCSE subject?+

It depends on the board's rules for that specification, and the exams officer can confirm it in one conversation. Both boards run a November series alongside the main summer one, so a resit costs months rather than a year. Whether a single component or the whole subject must be retaken completely changes the preparation and the cost, which is why the question is worth asking before results arrive rather than in the week when every family asks at once.

Is a November resit worth it for an Al Gurfa student?+

Three things decide it. Whether the grade actually blocks something: a post-16 subject prerequisite, or one of the five passes needed for British-track equivalency, in which Arabic and Islamic education do not count. Whether the diagnostic shows a short specific list of causes, which a November window can close, or gaps across the syllabus, which it usually cannot. And whether the student has appetite for it alongside starting a post-16 course, which is a real constraint.

Why does multiple-choice technique matter on the Cambridge sciences?+

Because the multiple-choice paper carries thirty per cent of the grade, which is more than many individual topics are worth across the whole entry, and elimination technique is a teachable skill that is almost never taught explicitly. A student who can rule out two plausible distractors reliably converts guesses into marks across the entire paper. Ranking it against individual topics by marks at stake usually puts it near the top, which surprises families and the students themselves.

What happens if nobody has taught my child's specification locally?+

That is the honest situation for Extended-tier Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science and Business Studies in a small emirate, where the number of people within a drive of Al Gurfa who have taught the course recently can be zero. Paying an in-home premium does not change that number. Removing geography is the only move that changes the outcome rather than the convenience, which is the argument for online delivery and is strongest precisely where this market's pages are silent.

How do method marks work in IGCSE mathematics?+

Marks are allocated to steps as well as to the final answer, so a written method earns marks even when the arithmetic at the end goes wrong, and an unwritten method loses marks the student had already earned. That asymmetry is the highest-value single behaviour change available in the subject, because it applies across every structured question on both papers. Teaching it explicitly changes a script faster than any amount of additional content revision does.

Do I need to tell the tutor which Cambridge zone our centre is in?+

Not for teaching, but you need to know it yourself. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own version of the timetable, and states that it is essential to use the correct version, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. The failure mode is a timetable printed from a revision forum. Use the exams officer's copy and nothing else, checked against the board's own site.

What may a tutor do with an IGCSE coursework component in Al Gurfa?+

Teach the content, explain the assessment criteria in the board's own wording, show how a comparable task is approached, read a draft the student has written and name where it falls short of a criterion, and teach the student to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the coursework, draft the assignment, or edit a piece to completion so that the sentences become theirs. A page in this search result sells finished assessed work, and the consequence of that falls on the candidate rather than the seller.

Can I buy only a diagnostic without committing to lessons?+

Yes, and for an undecided family it is often the best first purchase. One or two sessions produce a document about your child that you keep whatever happens next: a paper sat to time, marked against the official scheme, with losses grouped by cause and topics mapped to papers. It can be taken to any other tutor, and its specificity is the clearest available evidence of whether this tutor knows the specification at all.

Get three documents, ask four questions, then book one trial

For an Al Gurfa family the order is the whole method. Email the school for the entry confirmation, the dates sheet with the entry deadline and zone timetable, and the last marked assessment. Ask any prospective tutor the four specification questions and notice whether the answers are sentences or paragraphs about approach. Then run a free trial lesson in the slot you actually intend to keep, and ask for a diagnostic with a topic-to-paper map in the first fortnight. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Nobody is sent to an Al Gurfa address, and no grade boundary figure is quoted here.
