IB and IGCSE tutors for Mohammed Bin Rashid City families

IB and IGCSE tutors in Mohammed Bin Rashid City are usually hired for one reason, even when the parent describes it differently: the school is covering the syllabus and the student is not converting it into marks. MBR City runs from District One and Sobha Hartland through District 11, Azizi Riviera and the Meydan edge, and its schools are strong. The gap is structural, not a failure of teaching, and this page sets out exactly where it opens. Lessons are one-to-one, delivered live over video.

IB & IGCSE in Mohammed Bin Rashid City

What the school covers, and what your child is left to do alone

Parents in Mohammed Bin Rashid City rarely have a complaint about the teaching. The district's schools sit among the better-resourced in Dubai, the class sizes are manageable and the syllabus gets covered. The problem families bring to us is narrower and more specific: a student who understands the material in class is losing marks on paper, and nobody in the system has the time to work out why. That is a structural gap, not a teaching failure, and it is the honest subject of this page.

The arithmetic is straightforward once you write it down. A Higher Level Diploma subject gets four or five periods a week across two years, which is enough time to deliver content and almost no time to practise converting it into marks under exam conditions. An Internal Assessment worth a fifth of the final grade gets a handful of lessons on the criteria and then becomes the student's own project. The Extended Essay has a supervisor with a limited mandated contact time and four thousand words of independent work attached to it. Theory of Knowledge gets one or two periods a week and is treated as unexaminable until February.

On the IGCSE side the gap has a different shape. Extended-tier content is covered, but the papers that carry the marks are not all practised. Cambridge 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics and 0610 Biology each put twenty per cent of the grade on an alternative-to-practical or practical paper with its own marking conventions, and in a crowded scheme of work that paper is frequently never taught as a paper at all. A student can know the chemistry and still lose a grade on Paper 6 because nobody told them what the examiner is looking for.

This is the kind of gap a weekly one-to-one hour is genuinely good at closing, and it is worth being equally clear about the gaps it cannot close. A student who has not read the set texts does not acquire them in tutoring. A student two full terms behind in Maths Analysis and Approaches Higher Level needs a decision about the level, not an hour a week. The useful first step is a diagnostic against the student's own marked work, which tells you which category you are in before you spend anything.

Lessons for Mohammed Bin Rashid City families are one-to-one and delivered live over video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. The reason that matters for a gap-closing brief in particular is that the person who can teach criterion D on a science investigation, or the Paper 6 conventions, is a subject specialist rather than whoever is available locally. Matching on specialism is the whole point when the problem is this specific.

At a glance

  • A Higher Level subject gets four or five periods a week; exam technique is what gets squeezed out
  • The science Internal Assessment is 24 marks across four criteria and a fifth of the final grade
  • Cambridge 0625 Physics puts 50 per cent of the grade on Paper 4 and 20 per cent on a practical paper
  • A diagnostic against your child's own marked work costs nothing and tells you which gap you have
  • Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai run roughly AED 150-300 per hour
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mohammed Bin Rashid City covers Sobha Hartland, District One, District 11, Azizi Riviera and the Meydan edge, so the district contains every programme shape Dubai offers. Each one leaves a different amount of work to the student.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS alongside. Internal Assessments carry 20 to 30 per cent of each subject grade depending on the subject and level, marked internally against published criteria and moderated by the IB. The examined component rewards precision under time pressure, which is the part least practised in class.

In Mohammed Bin Rashid City the Diploma gap is almost always the same two things: the Internal Assessment research question, chosen badly in week one and discovered in week eight, and timed paper practice, which gets postponed until the mocks expose it. Both are fixable, and both are cheaper to fix in October than in March.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of eight, with command terms that decide the shape of a good answer. Year 11 students may sit MYP eAssessment on screen. Criterion totals convert to a 1 to 7 subject grade, which rarely corresponds to a parent's intuition from a percentage system.

The MYP gap in this district is the command term, not the content. A student who writes a description when the task said evaluate caps their own criterion score while understanding the topic perfectly. One session with the actual marked task in front of the tutor usually identifies it, and a term of weekly practice fixes it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Two-year courses examined at the end of Year 11, using Cambridge syllabuses such as 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry and 0610 Biology, or Pearson equivalents including 4MA1 and 4PH1. Cambridge tiers several subjects Core or Extended; the tier fixes the grade ceiling and the decision is effectively locked at the entry deadline.

The IGCSE gap here is paper-shaped. Extended content is taught, and the alternative-to-practical paper that carries a fifth of each science grade often is not, because it is a skills paper rather than a content one. A handful of sessions on marking conventions is the highest-return tutoring available at this level.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level, after IGCSE

Three or four linear subjects examined at the end of Year 13. Mathematics covers pure, mechanics and statistics; sciences carry a separate practical endorsement. Offers from universities are quoted in A Level grades, which makes the choice at sixteen a direct admissions decision rather than a matter of preference.

The A Level gap in Mohammed Bin Rashid City is the jump in question length from IGCSE. Students who scored well at sixteen on short structured questions meet extended problems with no scaffolding and lose marks for stopping halfway. The fix is timed question sets with a mark-scheme walkthrough, which takes ninety minutes and does not fit in a school lesson.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects where the classroom-to-paper gap is widest in this district, with the specific component that tends to cause it. The point of naming the component is that it tells you what a session should actually be about.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The gap is Paper 3 at Higher Level, which rewards sustained reasoning across an unfamiliar context and cannot be revised topic by topic. The Exploration is the second gap: criterion E asks for mathematics commensurate with the course, and most first drafts are below it.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Calculator fluency is the hidden gap. Students who can do the statistics by hand lose time and accuracy marks because they never learned the graphical calculator routes the paper assumes.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms are the content gap and the Scientific Investigation is the marks gap. Criterion D, evaluation, is where most students write generic limitations instead of naming the specific weakness in their own method.

Physics

HL and SL

Explanation questions are the gap. A student with the right physics in their head loses marks for writing it loosely, omitting units or giving an answer to the wrong number of significant figures. All three are coachable in weeks.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume plus command terms. Outline, explain, discuss and evaluate each demand a different answer shape, and the difference between a 5 and a 7 is usually the shape rather than the knowledge.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and the evaluation paragraph. The commentary portfolio is the other gap: a commentary that describes an article rather than applying a key concept to it loses marks the student did not know were available.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The unseen non-literary paper and the individual oral. Both are technique components, both are examined, and both get less class time than the set texts because the texts have to be covered.

IGCSE Mathematics (0580 and 4MA1)

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Method marks are the gap. Students who write an answer with no working forgo marks that were available even when the answer is wrong, and non-calculator arithmetic on the Extended paper is where multi-step questions unravel.

IGCSE Chemistry, Physics and Biology

Core and Extended

The alternative-to-practical paper carries a fifth of the grade and its own conventions: apparatus naming, variable control, sources of error and how to read a results table. It is the single most improvable component at this level.

IGCSE English Language and Literature

Core and Extended

Directed writing and the unseen extract. The gap is the assessment objective split between content and language, which students are rarely shown explicitly and which determines where effort pays.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes map onto the three kinds of gap. Picking the shape before picking the tutor is what stops a family paying for a term of weekly lessons to solve a problem that needed four sessions.

Diagnostic and targeted block

One diagnostic session working through the student's own marked paper or returned task, followed by four to six sessions aimed at the named gap. The block ends when the gap closes. This is the right shape for a technique problem, which is most of what this district brings.

  • Opens with the student's actual marked work, not a general assessment
  • Produces a written list of what is costing marks and why
  • Four to six sessions, with a defined end rather than a rolling commitment
  • Suits Paper 6 conventions, command terms and method-mark habits

Weekly subject slot, term-long

The right shape when the gap is content rather than technique: a student genuinely behind in a subject, who needs the school's sequence tracked and misunderstandings caught in the week they form. This runs from October to the exam series and steps up to twice weekly from January.

  • Tracks your child's own scheme of work, not a generic course
  • Worked solutions saved after each lesson for later revision
  • Steps up to twice weekly in Year 11 and DP2 from January
  • Reviewed after the mocks, with the plan adjusted to the paper evidence

Coursework method sessions

Short sessions timed against the school's internal deadlines for an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Personal Project. The tutor teaches the criteria and their mark allocations, questions the research design and responds to the student's own draft.

  • Criterion-by-criterion explanation with the marks attached to each
  • Research question narrowed until the data collection is realistic
  • Feedback on a draft the student wrote; no text is supplied
  • Timed against the school's deadline, which precedes the board's

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mohammed Bin Rashid City

01

What a teacher cannot fit into a week, component by component

The gap is easiest to see when it is laid out as a budget. Every assessed component in the IB and IGCSE systems has a class-time allocation and an independent-work requirement, and in several cases the independent requirement is the larger of the two. That is by design: both systems are explicitly testing a student's capacity to work alone. The failure mode is not that schools neglect this, but that students are expected to self-manage a workload that adults would find demanding.

The table below sets out where the budget runs out. Three rows deserve attention. The Internal Assessment line is the one families most often discover late, because the component looks like a project and behaves like an examination. The Extended Essay line matters because supervisor contact time is capped, and once the first draft is submitted the structured support largely ends. The exam-technique line is the one almost nobody plans for: students revise content, which feels productive, and never practise against a clock, which is what the paper tests.

Reading the table honestly also tells you where tutoring is not the answer. A student who has not covered the final two topics of a Higher Level syllabus because the class ran out of time needs those topics taught, which is a content job and takes a term. A student who knows the content and loses nine marks a paper on presentation needs four sessions. Those two situations attract the same parental worry and very different solutions.

02

Where IGCSE marks actually leave the page

Generic advice about working harder is useless at this level because the losses are specific and they are concentrated. The Cambridge science syllabuses sat across this district split the grade three ways: a multiple-choice paper worth thirty per cent, a structured theory paper worth fifty, and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper worth twenty. A student can be strong on content and still shed close to a grade through the twenty per cent nobody practised.

Mathematics loses marks differently. Cambridge 0580 at Extended tier is assessed across a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper, each carrying half the grade, and the most common loss is method marks forfeited by writing an answer with no working. Pearson 4MA1 at Higher tier runs two equally weighted papers, and the characteristic loss there is the last two questions left blank because the pacing was wrong. Neither problem is about mathematics.

The table names the component, what it tests and where the marks go. The practical consequence for a parent is that you can ask your child one question that is more diagnostic than any report: which paper did you lose the most marks on, and why. A student who cannot answer that has not been shown their own mark breakdown, which is the first thing a diagnostic session fixes.

One caution on syllabus detail. Cambridge and Pearson both revise syllabuses on a cycle, and paper structures that held for one cohort can change for the next. The weightings in this table reflect the structures sat by current candidates in this district, and the authoritative version for your child is the syllabus document for their examination year, which the school holds and Cambridge publishes. Check the code and the year together: a student entered for 0580 in one series and a sibling entered two years later may not be sitting the same paper combination at all, and past papers chosen from the wrong structure waste the practice.

03

The Internal Assessment criteria, letter by letter

No competitor page in this market names a single Internal Assessment criterion, which is strange, because the criteria are published, they are the actual basis of the mark, and most students have never read them properly. A Diploma student who knows what criterion D rewards will write a different evaluation section from one who does not, and the difference is typically two to four marks on a component worth a fifth of the grade.

The science Internal Assessment in Biology, Chemistry and Physics is a single Scientific Investigation marked out of twenty-four across four criteria carrying six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The Mathematics Exploration in both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is marked out of twenty across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with the last carrying six marks on its own.

The table sets out what each criterion rewards and the specific way students lose marks on it. Treat the mark totals as a guide and confirm them against the current subject guide for your child's cohort, since the IB revises subject guides on a cycle and a figure correct for one cohort can be wrong for the next. Your school's IB coordinator holds the authoritative version, and asking for it is a reasonable request.

The reason this table changes behaviour is that criteria are not a marking formality; they are the instructions. A student who has read criterion D properly writes an evaluation section that names the specific weakness in their own method and proposes a realistic improvement, because that is what the criterion asks for. A student who has not read it writes a paragraph about human error and parallax, and loses three or four of the six marks available while believing the section is finished. The same applies to criterion B in the Mathematics Exploration, where undefined notation costs marks that no amount of additional mathematics recovers.

What closing each kind of gap costs in this market

Three of the six best-ranking tutoring pages for Dubai searches publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars rather than the currency a Mohammed Bin Rashid City family actually transacts in. The bands below are market rates in AED taken from providers' own published pages and a 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey, with the source named. They are market figures, not an IB Gram price list, and no row here is a quote.

The useful move is to multiply the band by the number of sessions a gap actually takes, because that is the number a parent is deciding about. A technique gap is four to six sessions. A tier or level decision is one or two. A board-switch bridge after a mid-year move is eight to twelve. A full subject catch-up is a term. Written out this way, the technique gap turns out to be the cheapest intervention available and the one most families postpone.

Two cautions on reading any of these numbers. An advertised hourly rate is not what you end up paying if there are assessment fees, materials or a minimum booking, so ask for the all-in figure and whether value added tax is included. And a low rate buying the wrong intervention is more expensive than a high rate buying the right one: twenty sessions of general subject review will not fix an evaluation criterion that four sessions of criterion work would.

In-home tutoring in this district compared with one-to-one online

Families here ask about in-home tutoring constantly, and it deserves a straight answer. It is a real service, the Dubai market rate for it runs roughly AED 180-500 an hour with travel priced in according to a 2026 cost survey and tutors' own published pages, and for younger children who need an adult physically present it has a genuine advantage. The question is what it costs you in specialist choice when the gap you are closing is this specific.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. For Mohammed Bin Rashid City families we arrange one-to-one tuition delivered live over video, which means the tutor is selected from the full roster by subject, level and the specific component in question. The person who can teach criterion D on a science investigation, or the alternative-to-practical marking conventions, is a narrow specialism, and the subset of such people willing to drive to District One for a five o'clock start is narrower still.

The comparison table is organised around the gap rather than around convenience, because that is the decision in front of a parent on this page. The honest entry is the last row: a student who will not stay on task without someone in the room is harder to teach on a screen, and the format that works for them is shorter and more frequent with a parent within earshot, not a long block on a school night.

Ministry of Education equivalency, and what your child must be able to show

Equivalency is absent from most tutoring pages in this market, and one competitor publishes the wrong subject count, which is worse than silence. For a Mohammed Bin Rashid City family planning a UAE university route, the rules matter early, because they constrain subject choice in Year 10 rather than at the point of application. The figures below are from a Gulf Today report of the Ministry's own clarification, published in July 2026.

On the British track, students must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which is the point most often got wrong. On the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB Diploma this page publishes no points threshold, because the source used here states none and a figure that has not been read on the Ministry's own site should not sit on a page a family might plan around. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency or attestation, and tutoring is not a requirement for any of it. What a tutor can legitimately do is make sure the subject and grade profile a student is on track for actually satisfies the rule, which is a one-session conversation in Year 10.

Why buying a finished Internal Assessment closes the gap in the wrong direction

  • The criteria and their marks are teachable; the words on the page must be the student's
  • A badly chosen research question is the single most expensive early mistake
  • Feedback works on a draft the student wrote, not on text handed over by a tutor
  • Buying the component moves the gap to the examination, where nobody can help

There is a market in Dubai for completed coursework, and at least one site ranking for these searches sells finished Internal Assessments for a four-figure AED sum. A Mohammed Bin Rashid City parent under pressure in February will see those offers, so this page states the position rather than leaving it implied. Submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice under IB rules, the investigation falls on the student rather than the vendor, and a Diploma candidate found to have done it risks losing the award.

The practical argument is almost as strong as the rules argument. The skill an Internal Assessment tests is the skill the examination then tests again under time pressure. A student who did not design the investigation does not learn to design one, and the deficit resurfaces in May on a paper nobody can sit for them. Buying the component does not close the gap this page is about; it moves the gap to a place where it cannot be fixed.

The legitimate boundary is wide enough to be genuinely useful. A tutor can teach the criteria and their mark allocations, explain what a command term requires, help narrow a research question until it will produce usable data, teach the statistics or laboratory technique the investigation needs, read a draft the student has written and ask harder questions about it than the student asked themselves, and point out an unsupported claim. A tutor must not supply text, rewrite a passage into final form, or take over in any way that makes the submission not the student's own. IB Gram does not supply assessed work and declines requests framed that way.

08

How to tell which gap you actually have before spending anything

  • Technique gap: losses spread across papers on working, units and command terms
  • Content gap: whole questions blank and consistent losses in the same topics
  • Level problem: two terms behind at Higher Level, which hours alone will not solve
  • The evidence is the marked paper, not the progress report comment

Everything on this page reduces to one question a parent can answer cheaply: is this a content gap, a technique gap or a level problem. Those three have different costs, different timescales and different solutions, and the worry they generate feels identical from the outside. The evidence that distinguishes them is already in the house, in the form of a marked paper, a progress report or a returned coursework draft.

A technique gap looks like this: the student can explain the topic aloud, the marked paper shows marks lost on presentation, units, working or command terms, and the losses are spread evenly rather than concentrated in one topic. This is the cheapest gap to close, usually four to six sessions, and it is also the one that compounds if left, because the same losses recur on every paper for the rest of the course.

A content gap looks different: whole questions left blank, consistent losses in the same topics, and a student who cannot explain the material when asked. This needs the topics taught and takes a term. A level problem is the third case, where a student is two terms behind in a Higher Level subject and the honest advice is a conversation with the school about the level rather than more hours. A diagnostic session that reads the actual marked work tells you which of the three you are in, and it is worth doing before any commitment.

Where we tutor

The communities inside Mohammed Bin Rashid City

MBR City is a district rather than a neighbourhood, running from the canal south to Nad Al Sheba and east toward Ras Al Khor. The communities inside it have different housing, different school patterns and different versions of the same academic gap.

District One

Large villa plots with households often running three or four school stages at once. The practical consequence is that the Diploma student's Internal Assessment deadline competes with a Year 10 options decision in the same month, and one of them loses.

Sobha Hartland

Apartments and villas with two secondary schools inside the community, which means a short school run and an unusually early workable lesson slot. Families here can get a diagnostic session done in the afternoon rather than the evening.

District 11 and Meydan Gated Community

Newer villa clusters where a high proportion of families arrived in the last three years. Mid-course curriculum switches are common, and the gap is often a topic the previous board did not cover rather than a technique problem.

Azizi Riviera

High-density apartments along the canal, with many single-child households and a mix of curricula. Requests here skew towards one subject rather than a full package, which suits a short diagnostic plus a targeted block.

Meydan and the racecourse edge

Administratively adjacent and practically part of the same school catchment. Families here use the Nad Al Sheba schools, which puts them on a different exam calendar from the Hartland cohort a few minutes away.

Nad Al Sheba

The school belt serving much of MBR City. Four secondary schools sit here covering the IB continuum and the English National Curriculum, which is why neighbouring households often sit entirely different qualifications.

Business Bay and the canal

Where many MBR City parents work. Relevant to this page because a diagnostic session discussing a marked paper is more useful with a parent present, and that usually means a slot after half past six.

Ras Al Khor and Nad Al Hamar

The eastern boundary of the district. The interchange here between half past three and five is the reason an in-home tutor's earliest offer in MBR City is later than families expect.

Two secondary schools sit within the district itself, in Sobha Hartland, covering the IB continuum and the English National Curriculum with an IB and A Level sixth form. Which route a student is on determines whether the gap is a tier decision or a criterion one.

  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai

The Nad Al Sheba belt, a short drive south

The schools most MBR City families outside Sobha Hartland actually use. Between them they run the IB continuum, Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE and A Level, which is the reason this district has no single academic calendar.

  • Repton School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Kent College Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Schools are named only to describe the Mohammed Bin Rashid City catchment. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named here, and programmes should be confirmed with the school and against the KHDA school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked work, not the worry

A photographed mock paper, a returned Internal Assessment draft or a marked task tells us in two minutes what a general description cannot in twenty. The question we are answering first is which of the three gaps you have, because that decides everything else.

  2. 02

Confirm the board, the tier and the syllabus code

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different courses with different papers, and Core and Extended are different grade ceilings. The statement of entry settles it. Getting this wrong means practising on papers your child will never sit.

  3. 03

Diagnostic session on the student's own evidence

The tutor works through the marked paper on a shared screen and produces a written list of where the marks are going and why. You get that list whether or not you continue, and it is the most useful single hour in this process.

  4. 04

Agree a block with an end, or a term with a review

A technique gap gets four to six sessions with a defined finish. A content gap gets a term with a review after the mocks. We say which one the evidence points to rather than selling the longer option by default.

  5. 05

    Plan the coursework deadlines separately

Internal Assessment and Extended Essay sessions are booked backwards from the school's own internal deadlines, which the IB coordinator sets and which fall earlier than any board date. These are separate from the weekly slot and should be scheduled in September.

  6. 06

Review against paper evidence, not impressions

After the mocks we compare the new mark breakdown with the diagnostic list. Gaps that closed are dropped, gaps that did not get a different approach, and if the tutor is not the right match we change them rather than asking you to persist.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The gap is named before anything is sold

A diagnostic on the student's own marked work tells you whether you have a technique gap, a content gap or a level problem. Those cost four sessions, a term, and a conversation with the school respectively. Most providers skip this step because it sometimes ends the sale.

Criteria and weightings are published, not hinted at

This page names the Internal Assessment criteria letter by letter with their marks, and the paper weightings for the syllabuses sat in this district. A parent can check every figure against the subject guide, which is the point.

Specialists are matched to components, not just subjects

Criterion D on a science investigation and the alternative-to-practical marking conventions are narrow specialisms. Because lessons run online, the match is made from the full roster rather than from whoever will drive to District One at five o'clock.

Market rates appear with their sources

Every AED band here names the provider or survey that published it, and is multiplied by the number of sessions a given gap actually takes. Nothing on this page is presented as an IB Gram quote or a national price.

No assessed work is supplied, and the reason is stated

There is a market in finished Internal Assessments in this city. We do not participate in it, because it is malpractice under IB rules, the consequence lands on the student, and it moves the gap to the examination where nobody can help.

No regulator or board approval is claimed

IB Gram holds no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Those bodies appear here to explain a rule or source a figure, never to borrow authority we do not have.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mohammed Bin Rashid City: your questions answered

My son understands the work in class but keeps losing marks. What is actually going wrong?+

Almost always a technique gap rather than a knowledge gap. The marked paper will show it: losses spread across questions on working not shown, units omitted, answers given to the wrong number of significant figures, or an explanation written too loosely to score. Those losses recur on every paper until someone addresses them, which is why they compound. The fix is usually four to six sessions working directly on his own marked papers against the mark scheme, not a term of general subject review. Ask to see his mark breakdown by question before buying anything.

How much of the IB science grade does the Internal Assessment carry, and how is it marked?+

The Scientific Investigation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics carries twenty per cent of the final grade and is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is assessed internally against the published criteria and moderated by the IB. Most lost marks sit in research design, where the question is too broad to answer, and evaluation, where students write about generic human error instead of naming the specific weakness in their own method. Confirm the current totals against your child's subject guide, since the IB revises guides on a cycle.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper, and why does it matter so much?+

It is the paper that replaces a live practical examination in the Cambridge sciences, and it carries roughly a fifth of the grade in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. It tests apparatus selection, variable control, reading and completing results tables, identifying sources of error and suggesting improvements. The reason it matters disproportionately is that it is a skills paper, and in a crowded scheme of work it is often never taught as a paper at all. A handful of sessions on its marking conventions is the highest-return tutoring available at IGCSE level.

Which criterion do Mathematics Exploration marks usually disappear on?+

Criterion E, use of mathematics, which carries six of the twenty available marks. The requirement is mathematics commensurate with the course, and a large share of first drafts sit below the level of the course because the student chose a topic they were already comfortable with. Criterion C, personal engagement, is the second common loss, where a textbook topic is reproduced with no independent contribution. Both are fixable at the planning stage and very difficult to fix once twelve pages are written, which is the argument for a session on the research question early rather than feedback late.

Is there any point hiring a tutor six weeks before the exams?+

Yes, for a technique gap, and much less so for a content gap. In six weeks a student can learn to show working, get units and significant figures right, handle command terms correctly and pace a paper, and those changes show up in marks immediately because the knowledge is already there. Six weeks will not teach two missing Higher Level topics properly. The honest answer depends on which situation you are in, and a diagnostic session on a recent mock paper answers that in an hour rather than after a month of lessons.

What does it cost to close a technique gap in Dubai?+

Four to six sessions at the market rate for a qualified subject tutor, which published figures put at roughly AED 150-300 an hour; Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. For an Internal Assessment method block, three or four sessions at specialist rates of AED 200-450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and a 2026 Dubai cost survey listing 200-450 and upwards. Those are market figures rather than IB Gram prices. Ask any provider for the all-in number, whether value added tax is included, and what happens if the match is wrong.

Can a tutor help with the research design for my daughter's Chemistry investigation?+

Yes, and it is the most valuable place to use one. A tutor can explain what criterion A rewards, help narrow the question until it will actually generate usable data, discuss which variables need controlling and why, and teach the technique and uncertainty handling the method requires. What a tutor must not do is supply text, rewrite a section into final form, or take over the investigation. IB Gram does not supply assessed work and declines requests framed that way, because submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on your daughter.

How many IGCSE subjects does a Mohammed Bin Rashid City student need for equivalency?+

Five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade, according to a Gulf Today report of the Ministry's own clarification published in July 2026. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. At least one ranking competitor states six subjects, which is the error to avoid inheriting. Verify the current rule on moe.gov.ae before making subject decisions, and note that IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency.

Why do I need a separate session for the Extended Essay if there is already a supervisor?+

Supervisor contact time is limited by design, and the structured part of it largely ends once the first draft is submitted. The components that cost marks afterwards are the argument's coherence, the use of sources and the reflections, and those are exactly what a reader outside the school can question usefully. A tutor reads the student's own draft and asks harder questions than the student asked themselves. The tutor does not research it, structure it on the student's behalf or write any of it, and the four thousand words have to be the student's own.

My child is at a Nad Al Sheba school and we live in District One. Does that change anything practically?+

It changes the slot rather than the tutoring. A District One address with a Nad Al Sheba school run realistically starts a lesson at five o'clock or later, because the drive runs into the worst of the afternoon. Families in Sobha Hartland, a few minutes away inside the same district, can usually start around quarter past four because their schools are inside the community. Since lessons run online there is no additional travel to account for, so the only question is when your child can sit down with a clear head.

Should we switch my son from Higher Level to Standard Level instead of getting a tutor?+

Sometimes, and an honest provider will say so. If he is two full terms behind in a Higher Level subject, cannot explain the foundational material when asked, and is losing whole questions rather than marks within questions, extra hours are unlikely to recover it and the conversation belongs with the school. If he knows the content and is losing marks on presentation, timing and command terms, the level is not the problem. A diagnostic session on his marked papers distinguishes the two cases, and we will tell you which one the evidence shows.

Do tutors visit homes in Mohammed Bin Rashid City?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Independent in-home tutors do operate across Dubai at market rates of roughly AED 180-500 an hour with travel priced in, per a 2026 Dubai cost survey and tutors' own published pages. For the kind of work this page describes the trade-off is sharp: the person who can teach the alternative-to-practical conventions or a specific Internal Assessment criterion is a narrow specialist, and the subset willing to drive to District One for an afternoon start is narrower still.

What should I ask my child's teacher before hiring anyone?+

Three questions. Which paper is losing the most marks, and roughly how many. Whether the loss is content the student has not grasped or technique they have not been shown. And what the internal deadline list looks like for coursework components this term. Those three answers turn a vague worry into a brief a tutor can act on, and they are information the school already holds. A teacher who can answer them has effectively written your diagnostic for you, which saves a session.

How early is too early to start Internal Assessment support?+

The expensive mistake is starting late, not early. The research question is chosen in roughly week one of the component and the consequences of choosing badly surface around week eight, by which point redesigning means losing the work already done. One session at the planning stage, spent narrowing the question until the data collection is realistic and checking it against the criteria, is worth more than three sessions on a finished draft. In practice that means September or October for most Diploma cohorts, timed against the school's own internal deadline list rather than a board date.

If the gap is technique, why would it take more than one session to fix?+

Because the losses are habits rather than facts. A student who has written answers without working for three years does not stop after being told once; the habit reasserts itself under exam pressure, which is exactly when it costs marks. Four to six sessions works because each one includes a timed attempt where the habit either holds or does not, with immediate feedback. One session identifies the problem and produces a list. The sessions after it are what make the change survive contact with a real paper in May.

Name the gap, then decide what to spend

The cheapest useful step for a Mohammed Bin Rashid City family is not booking a term of lessons. It is a diagnostic hour on your child's own marked paper that tells you whether this is a technique gap costing four sessions, a content gap costing a term, or a level problem that belongs in a conversation with the school. Send the marked work, confirm the board and the tier, and we will match a specialist to the component rather than to the subject. Lessons are one-to-one and delivered live over video, which is how the match gets made on specialism rather than on driving distance.
