IB MYP Tutor in Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Booking an IB MYP tutor in Mohammed Bin Rashid City is a different scheduling problem from booking a Diploma tutor, because an eleven-year-old's usable evening ends around half past five. School days here finish between 2:45pm and 3:30pm, the drive home can take forty minutes, and MYP tasks arrive in bursts rather than nightly. This page sets out session length by age, where a session belongs in a task cycle, and when one genuinely fits.

  • Session length matched to the MYP year rather than sold as a standard hour
  • Placed inside the task cycle, so drafting has somewhere to go
  • Timing worked from the end of the school day, not from a tutor's diary
  • Free trial lesson at the slot you would really use

IB & IGCSE in Mohammed Bin Rashid City

A twelve-year-old's evening is shorter than the timetable assumes

Most tutoring advice is written for examination students, and applying it to a Middle Years student produces a session at half past six that nobody benefits from. An eleven or twelve-year-old has a usable working window that closes around half past five, and a thirteen or fourteen-year-old's closes not much later. Anything scheduled after that is an hour during which a child is awake, polite and absorbing very little, and parents pay for it anyway because the slot was the one on offer.

The geography makes the window narrower here than the clock suggests. Schools serving this district finish between roughly 2:45pm and 3:30pm. A child at a school inside the district or in Nad Al Sheba is home within twenty minutes. One travelling from Al Safa, Al Barsha or further west is in afternoon traffic, and the final stretch into a gated community adds to it, so arriving between 3:45pm and 4:15pm is normal. Subtract the time a younger child needs to eat and stop, and the usable window may be an hour wide.

The second difference from Diploma scheduling is that MYP does not set work nightly. It sets tasks: an investigation, a design cycle, an essay, a presentation, each arriving with a week or two of notice and each absorbing several evenings when the deadline approaches. A weekly tutoring hour placed without reference to that cycle will sometimes land in a week with nothing to work on and sometimes land in a week where the child has three other things due.

What a near-me search returns, in a district like this one, is tutors prepared to drive here, and a tutor leaving the western cluster at four is in the same traffic as your child. Arrival between a quarter to five and a quarter past is routine, which for a Diploma student is inconvenient and for an MYP student means the session happens at the edge of their capacity. That is a bigger problem at twelve than at seventeen, and almost nobody says so.

IB Gram delivers MYP tuition to Mohammed Bin Rashid City as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time, in sessions sized to the student's age rather than sold as a standard hour. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. The sections below set out session length by MYP year, where a session belongs in a task cycle, when one fits after the school run, and what the Personal Project needs in MYP 5.

Nothing here promises a grade. It gives you the scheduling decisions that make a younger student's tutoring hour actually work, which in this age group matter more than the choice of tutor does.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years and an eleven-year-old and a sixteen-year-old need different schedules as much as different teaching. These are the three stages that matter for a household here.

MYP 1-2Ages 11-13 · Years 7-8

Middle Years Programme, Years 7 and 8

The years where session length matters more than content. Forty minutes of focused work with a tutor, early in the evening, achieves more than an hour that runs past the point of usefulness. The job is mostly teaching a child to read the criterion descriptor before starting a task rather than writing something and hoping, which is a habit that transfers to every subject group.

Families in this district often have a Diploma sibling competing for the same evening window, and the younger child tends to lose. Giving the MYP student the earlier slot is usually the right call, because their capacity falls away sooner while a seventeen-year-old can still work at seven.

MYP 3-4Ages 13-15 · Years 9-10

Middle Years Programme, Years 9 and 10

Tasks lengthen and criterion D in several subjects begins to demand genuine evaluation rather than description. A full hour becomes workable, and the useful pattern is a session early in a task cycle to plan and understand the criteria, with the drafting done by the student across the following evenings rather than inside the session.

These are also the years when a decision about the Diploma or A Levels starts forming at schools serving this district. One session testing readiness for a particular post-16 subject is more valuable than a term of general support, and the week still has room for it.

MYP 5Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Middle Years Programme, Year 11

The year that carries the Personal Project alongside subject tasks, and the year the week genuinely fills. Scheduling has to accommodate a long independent piece with its own deadlines, which means protecting evenings rather than filling them, and placing the few tutoring sessions that help at the planning stage instead of the panic stage.

Where a school enters students for the IB's optional MYP eAssessment, preparation differs because the on-screen format and timing are unfamiliar. Whether a school enters varies school by school and sometimes year by year, so confirm it with the MYP coordinator rather than assuming.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP has eight subject groups, and they differ in how much evening time a task consumes. These are the groups we cover for households in this district, noted for their scheduling weight rather than their difficulty.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Sets shorter, more frequent work than other groups, so it fits a short early session well. Criterion B, investigating patterns, is where marks are lost, and that work needs the student alert rather than at the end of a long evening.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Investigation tasks absorb several evenings near a deadline, with criterion C processing and evaluating the usual weak point. A session early in the cycle, before data is collected, is worth three near the submission date.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Reading and drafting both happen in the student's own time and cannot be compressed into a session. The hour is best spent on criterion A analysing, which is a skill discussion rather than a writing exercise.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Research tasks eat evenings, and criterion D thinking critically carries the contested marks. Discussion-led, so it survives a slightly later slot than mathematics or sciences do.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Benefits from short frequent sessions more than any other group, because speaking and listening improve with repetition. Phase placement matters more than year group and is worth confirming with the school.

Design

MYP 1-5

The design cycle runs over weeks and the making happens at home or at school, so a session belongs at the inquiry and the evaluation stages rather than in the middle. Thin coverage in this market, so book early.

Arts

MYP 1-5

The process journal does much of the assessment work, and it has to be kept as the work happens rather than written up afterwards. A session is useful for explaining that and little else.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

The written and reflective components surprise students who expected a practical subject. Low evening load except around a reflection deadline, which makes it easy to schedule around.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed with their own criteria and frequently the lowest mark on a report because nobody explained that integration itself is being assessed. Usually a single-session fix, placed as soon as the task is set.

Personal Project

MYP 5

A long independent piece with its own internal deadlines, which reshapes the whole MYP 5 year. Our support is process coaching placed at the planning stage, and the goal, product and report remain entirely the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one and online, sized and placed for a younger student rather than sold as a standard weekly hour. The length and the timing are part of the design, not an afterthought.

Short early session, MYP 1 to 3

Forty to forty-five minutes, placed as early in the evening as the journey home allows, with a parent in the house rather than in the room. Shorter works better at this age because attention is the constraint rather than content, and a forty-minute session a child finishes alert beats an hour they endure. The work between sessions is one piece of drafting, not a set of exercises.

  • Forty to forty-five minutes, not an hour
  • Placed before half past five wherever possible
  • An adult in the house for the first few sessions
  • One piece of drafting between sessions, against the descriptor

Task-cycle session, MYP 4 and 5

A full hour, placed deliberately at the start of a task cycle rather than at a fixed point in the week regardless of what is due. The session reads the task sheet and the criteria with the student, plans the approach, and then the student drafts across the following evenings. A second session before submission reviews the draft they have written.

  • Placed at the start of a task cycle, not near the deadline
  • Task sheet and criterion descriptors read with the student
  • Student drafts between sessions; we never draft for them
  • An optional review session once a draft exists

Transition block, MYP 5 into post-16

Four to six sessions in MYP 5 aimed at readiness for a named Diploma or A Level subject. MYP does not use timed papers, mark schemes or command terms, so the gap is procedural and closes quickly. The block also produces a written verdict on readiness that a family can take to the school before a Higher Level choice is confirmed.

  • Aimed at one named post-16 subject and level
  • Examination-format questions under time, which MYP does not use
  • Written readiness verdict you can show the school
  • Four to six sessions, bounded, with no automatic continuation

01

Session length and timing by MYP year

The standard product in this market is a sixty-minute weekly session, sold identically to an eleven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old. For the eleven-year-old it is the wrong length and usually the wrong hour, and both errors are easy to avoid once somebody names them. Attention, not content, is the binding constraint in the early MYP years, and a session should be built around it.

Forty minutes is a better unit in MYP 1 and 2. A child who finishes a session still engaged has learned something and will return to the next one willingly; a child who endures the last twenty minutes of an hour has learned that tutoring is something to be survived, which is expensive in a way that does not show up for a year. By MYP 4 and 5 an hour is appropriate, and in MYP 5 a longer session around a major task can be justified.

Timing matters more than length. A younger student's usable window closes around half past five, and the journey home from the western school cluster can consume most of what precedes it. That is why the single most useful scheduling decision in this district is giving the MYP child the earlier slot when two children in the household need sessions, even though the Diploma sibling's examinations feel more urgent. A seventeen-year-old can still work at seven; a twelve-year-old cannot.

The table sets out what works by year. It is a starting point rather than a rule, because children differ, and the honest test is whether your child is still contributing in the last ten minutes. If they are not, the session is too long or too late, and shortening or moving it costs nothing while adding a second session costs a great deal and makes the problem worse.

The MYP task cycle, and where a session belongs in it

MYP does not set homework in the way an IGCSE course does. It sets tasks, each with a sheet, a set of criteria being assessed and a deadline a week or two away, and each absorbing several evenings as the deadline approaches. A tutoring slot fixed to a day of the week without reference to that cycle will sometimes arrive with nothing to do and sometimes arrive in the week the student has three things due.

The cycle has four stages and they want different things. At the start, when the task sheet is handed out, the valuable intervention is reading the sheet and the criterion descriptors with the student and planning an approach. That is one session and it determines most of the eventual mark, because a task planned against the descriptor scores better than a task written well and aimed at nothing in particular.

In the middle, while the student is researching or making or drafting, a session adds little and competes with the work itself. This is the stage to leave alone. Near the end, once a draft exists, a session reviewing what the student has written against the descriptor is genuinely useful, and it is the point at which a 4 out of 8 often becomes a 6. After submission, a short conversation about the returned mark closes the loop and sets up the next cycle.

The practical consequence is that a weekly fixed slot is less useful in MYP than it is at Diploma level, and a flexible arrangement anchored to task cycles is better. We ask for the school's assessment calendar if one exists, or the task sheet as soon as it is issued, and place the session at the stage where it does the work. That is more administration for us and it is the difference between a mark moving and an hour passing.

03

When a session fits after the school run

The timing chain for an MYP student is the same as for anyone else and the consequences are sharper, because the window it leads into is shorter. When the school day ends, how long the journey home takes at that hour, how long a younger child needs to eat and settle, and therefore when a session can begin while the child is still able to contribute.

Read the table and the pattern is clear. A student at a school inside the district or in Nad Al Sheba comfortably makes a four o'clock session, which is inside the usable window with room to spare. A student travelling from the western cluster is home around a quarter past four, ready at about twenty to five, and a forty-minute session then finishes at around twenty past five, which is just inside the window. Add an in-home tutor's own journey and the same session starts at a quarter past five and finishes at six, which for a twelve-year-old is past the point of value.

That is the clearest practical argument for online delivery in this age group, and it has nothing to do with teaching quality. The forty-five minutes an in-home arrangement costs at each end is tolerable for a Diploma student and decisive for an MYP student, because it is drawn from a window that is only an hour or so wide to begin with.

The last row of the table is the one households should check first. A club, a sport fixture or a music lesson removes the usable window entirely on that day for a younger child, and a session pushed to six o'clock on that evening is not a session in any useful sense. Move it to another day. If no day is free before half past five, a weekend morning is a better answer than a late weekday hour.

04

Why criterion work needs drafting evenings, and how many

  • Four criteria per subject, each out of 8, totalling 32 before conversion
  • Reading the descriptor before starting is the single largest mark-mover
  • Revision after feedback has to happen on a different evening to be real
  • Protect two drafting evenings per task cycle for the student's own work
  • One session per cycle often beats one per week in MYP
  • Ask the school for the criterion marks behind a reported grade

MYP marks are earned by work the student produces against published descriptors, which means the improvement happens while they are drafting rather than while a tutor is talking. A household planning tutoring therefore needs to plan drafting evenings as deliberately as session evenings, and in a week with a journey home this long that is a real constraint rather than a formality.

The mechanism is simple and almost never explained to students. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8, giving a total out of 32 that converts to the reported 1 to 7 grade by published boundaries. A student who writes a task without reading the descriptor is guessing at what is wanted and will usually land around the middle. A student who reads the descriptor, drafts, compares the draft to the descriptor and revises once will usually land a band or two higher for the same subject knowledge.

That second version requires two drafting sessions of the student's own, spaced a few days apart, with the revision happening after feedback rather than in the same sitting. So a task cycle needs roughly three evenings of the student's time and one or two tutoring sessions, placed at the start and after the draft exists. A household that books a weekly hour and leaves no drafting evenings has bought the smaller half of the process.

The practical rule is to protect two evenings per task cycle for the student's own work, and to keep those evenings free of tutoring rather than filling them. In a district where the journey home already costs an hour, that sometimes means accepting one tutoring session per cycle instead of one per week, which is cheaper and works better. We will say so rather than selling the weekly slot.

05

The Personal Project in MYP 5, and the calendar it needs

The Personal Project reshapes the MYP 5 year, and scheduling it badly is the commonest reason a capable student produces a weak one. It is a long independent piece assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report as the evidence, and it runs alongside subject tasks rather than replacing them.

Two scheduling facts matter more than anything else. The first is that the process journal is contemporaneous evidence: it has to be kept as the work happens, in short entries across months, not written up in a weekend near the deadline. A student who understands that in September has a far easier year than one who discovers it in February. Explaining it is a single session and it belongs at the very start.

The second is that the goal has to be achievable in the time the week actually contains. An over-ambitious goal is the usual cause of a poor project, and in a district where the journey home consumes an hour a day, ambition has to be calibrated against a genuinely narrow weekly window. One conversation questioning the goal until it is specific and achievable is the highest-value hour in the whole project, and it costs almost nothing.

After those two, the project needs protected evenings rather than tutoring sessions. Three or four short process-coaching sessions across the year is the right volume: one at the start on the goal and the journal, one at the planning stage, one when a draft report exists, and perhaps one before submission. Filling the deadline weeks with sessions produces a tired student and, at worst, the pressure in which help gets accepted that should not be.

06

KHDA, the mandatory subjects and a school day that is fuller than it looks

Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, with annual inspection on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. For an MYP family the relevant part of a report is the middle-phase commentary rather than the headline band, because a school strong at primary or Diploma level is not automatically strong in between.

The scheduling fact is the mandatory UAE subjects, which run alongside MYP rather than instead of it, and which families new to Dubai routinely underestimate. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. It also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes are strictly prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ.

Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes. KHDA also requires that school teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a credential question for a school rather than for a tutoring service. For an MYP student the effect is a fuller school day, more work coming home, and a usable evening window under more pressure than the programme on paper suggests.

On our own position, plainly: IB Gram is not KHDA approved, ADEK approved or IB accredited, and does not claim to be. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, which is a different thing entirely from an individual tutor or an online matching service.

07

What a tutor must not do with a Personal Project or any MYP task

The pressure that produces academic-honesty problems is built out of calendars, which is why this section sits on a scheduling page. A student with a Personal Project report due in ten days, an empty process journal and no free evenings is the student most likely to accept help they should not accept, and at least one operator ranking for UAE IB queries sells completed assessed work at a published price.

What a tutor legitimately does is explain the criteria in the language the school is using, question a goal or a task focus until it is specific and achievable, explain that a process journal is contemporaneous evidence rather than something written up at the end, teach a skill the task depends on, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. That is substantial help and it is what the sessions on this page are for.

What a tutor may not do is choose the goal or the focus, make or contribute to the product, supply content for the report, write or edit the text, or fabricate journal entries. We state all of that to the student directly in the first session rather than burying it, because at fifteen the pressure arrives later and a boundary explained under deadline is explained too late to help.

The scheduling remedy is to protect the deadline weeks rather than fill them, and to place the valuable conversations early: the goal, the journal, the criteria. We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides or assessment materials; we reference them and point to the school's own copies, which are the versions that apply to your child's cohort.

08

Getting started, and the four things we ask before proposing a time

Four questions decide the arrangement for a younger student, and we ask them before proposing anyone. Which school, and what time the day ends. What fixed commitments sit in the week, including clubs and music. Which subject group and MYP year. And whether there is a Diploma sibling competing for the same window, because if there is, the MYP child should usually get the earlier slot.

Then the useful documents: the criterion breakdown behind the last reported grade if the school provides it, the teacher's last comment quoted rather than summarised, and the school's own task sheet for the most recent piece of work. Task design varies between schools under the same programme, so the sheet your child was actually given tells us more than any description of MYP does.

We run a free trial lesson at the time you would really use and at the length we think suits the year, which for MYP 1 or 2 means forty minutes rather than an hour. Afterwards, ask for a criterion-level account in writing: not that your child should read more, but that the marks are going on criterion C because notation is informal, or on criterion D because the evaluation restates the method.

And the honest part. MYP coverage is thinner across this market than Diploma or IGCSE coverage, and thinnest in Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education and Language Acquisition beyond the commonly taught languages. Early slots in this district fill first and MYP families often lose them to Diploma families. When nothing suitable is free we say so and offer another hour, a weekend morning, or a tutor based outside the UAE with genuine MYP experience working to Gulf Standard Time.

Where we tutor

Mohammed Bin Rashid City and the schools its MYP students attend

MYP is taught by IB continuum schools, which are fewer and more concentrated than British-curriculum schools. These notes describe where that provision sits relative to this district and what the journey does to a younger child's evening.

District One

Gated access and long internal roads, so the final stretch adds minutes. For a twelve-year-old those minutes come off the only usable hour of the day rather than off a long evening.

Sobha Hartland

IB provision inside the wider district, so some students walk home from three o'clock. The best setting here for a genuinely early MYP session.

Meydan

Shares schools and road network with this district. Households here compete for the same early slots, and MYP families competing with Diploma families usually lose them.

Nad Al Sheba

Established IB continuum provision a short run south, the easiest direction when schools release, so students here keep their usable window intact.

Al Jaddaf

IB continuum provision near the creek crossings, a moderate journey from here. Students generally manage a four o'clock session without being past their best.

Al Barsha

IB provision in the western cluster and the longest routine journey from this district, which for a younger student can consume the entire usable window.

Al Quoz

Schools and tuition centres nearby, though centres here build around examination syllabuses rather than MYP, which limits the group alternative for criterion work.

Business Bay and Downtown

Short runs outside peak hours and slower when schools release. Relevant mainly as the comparison showing how much of the timing problem is traffic rather than distance.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the school, the finishing time and the MYP year

The journey home plus a younger student's shorter window decides both the slot and the session length. A forty-minute session at four o'clock and a sixty-minute session at six are not two versions of the same purchase.

  2. 02

Say whether a Diploma sibling is competing for the evening

If one is, the MYP child should usually get the earlier slot, because capacity falls away sooner at twelve than at seventeen. Households rarely allocate it that way without being prompted, and it is free to change.

  3. 03

Send the task sheet and the criterion breakdown

Task design varies between schools under the same programme, and the criterion marks behind a reported grade turn a vague worry into a named target. Both are more useful to us than the grade on its own.

  4. 04

Place the session at the start of a task cycle

Reading the descriptors and planning the approach determines most of the eventual mark. A session in the middle of the cycle competes with the work itself, and one in the submission week is too late to change anything.

  5. 05

Protect two drafting evenings per cycle

Revision after feedback has to happen on a different evening to be real. A household that books a weekly hour and leaves no drafting evenings has bought the smaller half of the process, so we would rather sell one session per cycle.

  6. 06

Free trial at the real time and the right length

We run the trial in the hour you intend to use and at the length that suits the year. Afterwards, ask for the criterion-level account in writing and judge how specific it is rather than how the session felt.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Session length matched to age

Forty minutes in MYP 1 and 2, an hour by MYP 4. A child who finishes a session still engaged comes back willingly; one who endures the last twenty minutes learns that tutoring is to be survived, which is expensive a year later.

Placed in the task cycle, not the diary

MYP sets tasks in bursts rather than homework nightly, so a session at the start of a cycle is worth three near the deadline. We ask for the task sheet and place the hour where it changes the mark.

The younger child gets the early slot

Where a Diploma sibling competes for the same window we recommend giving it to the MYP student, because a seventeen-year-old can still work at seven and a twelve-year-old cannot. It costs nothing and almost nobody suggests it.

Drafting evenings protected

Marks are earned while the student drafts against the descriptor, not while a tutor talks. We ask households to keep two evenings per cycle free of tutoring, which sometimes means selling one session instead of four.

No journey at either end

An in-home arrangement costs about forty-five minutes at each end in this district, which is tolerable for a Diploma student and decisive for an MYP student whose usable window is only an hour or so wide.

Personal Project boundaries stated to the student

Process coaching only, explained in the first session rather than in small print: the goal, the product, the journal and the report are entirely the student's own, and the pressure that tests that arrives later.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mohammed Bin Rashid City: your questions answered

Is a full hour too much for a Year 7 or Year 8 student?+

Forty minutes in MYP 1 and 2, forty-five to sixty in MYP 3, and a full hour by MYP 4 and 5. Attention rather than content is the constraint in the early years, and a child who finishes a session still contributing will come back to the next one willingly. One who endures the last twenty minutes of an hour learns that tutoring is something to be survived, which costs you more a year later than the shorter session would have saved.

What is the latest a session should start for a twelve-year-old here?+

Around a quarter to five, and earlier is better. A younger student's usable working window closes near half past five, and the journey home from the western school cluster can consume most of the time before it. A student at a school inside the district or in Nad Al Sheba comfortably makes a four o'clock start. One travelling from Al Barsha is ready at about twenty to five, which leaves room for forty minutes and not for an hour.

Would a tutor come to the house for MYP work?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition over live video throughout the UAE, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. For a younger student the online structure matters more than it does at Diploma level, because an in-home arrangement costs about forty-five minutes at each end in this district and that time comes out of a window only an hour or so wide. Local in-home tutors exist here, and in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel.

My MYP child and my Diploma child both need help. Who gets the early slot?+

The younger one, in almost every case, and households rarely arrange it that way without being prompted. A seventeen-year-old can still do useful work at seven in the evening; a twelve-year-old cannot. Give the MYP student the first slot after they are home and settled, and put the Diploma student's session afterwards, choosing a subject for them that survives a later hour, such as Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay discussion or an essay subject rather than timed mathematics.

Does a weekly fixed slot make sense for MYP?+

Less than it does for Diploma or IGCSE. MYP sets tasks in bursts rather than homework nightly, so a fixed weekly hour sometimes arrives with nothing to work on and sometimes arrives in a week with three things due. An arrangement anchored to task cycles works better: one session when the task sheet is issued, to read the descriptors and plan, and one once a draft exists. That is often one or two sessions per cycle rather than four a month.

When in a task cycle is a session actually worth booking?+

At the start, and again once a draft exists. Reading the task sheet and the criterion descriptors with the student and planning the approach determines most of the eventual mark, because a task aimed at the descriptor scores better than a task written well and aimed at nothing. In the middle, while the student researches or makes or drafts, a session competes with the work itself. In the submission week it is too late to change anything and the evenings should be protected.

How many evenings does an MYP task actually need?+

Roughly three of the student's own, spread across the cycle, plus one or two tutoring sessions. The drafting and the revision after feedback have to happen on different evenings to be real, because revising in the same sitting as writing produces tidying rather than improvement. In a district where the journey home already costs an hour a day, that means protecting two drafting evenings per cycle and keeping them free of tutoring rather than filling them with it.

What are the four MYP criteria and how do they become a grade?+

Each subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D and differing by subject group, with each marked out of 8. The four give a total out of 32, which converts to the reported 1 to 7 grade using published boundaries. Because the conversion is not proportional, one weak criterion holds a grade down more than parents expect. That is encouraging, because a single named criterion is the most tractable thing in the programme and usually moves in three to five sessions.

Does online tutoring work for an eleven or twelve-year-old?+

It works with one condition: an adult in the house, not in the room, for the first few sessions, so the child knows help is available if something technical goes wrong. Beyond that, younger students often engage well because a shared screen gives them something concrete to work on. The honest counterpoint is that presence matters more at eleven than at seventeen, so if your child genuinely needs someone beside them, a local arrangement is better and we will say so.

When should Personal Project support happen in MYP 5?+

Early, and then sparingly. Two conversations do most of the work: one at the very start explaining that the process journal is contemporaneous evidence to be kept in short entries across months rather than written up near the deadline, and one questioning the goal until it is achievable in the time the week actually contains. After those, three or four short process-coaching sessions across the year is the right volume, with the deadline weeks protected rather than filled with appointments.

My child's interdisciplinary unit mark was much lower than their others. Why?+

Usually because nobody explained that the integration itself is being assessed, with its own criteria. A student who produces good work in each discipline separately, without connecting them, is answering a question that was not asked. It is typically a single-session fix once they see what is being marked, and the session belongs as soon as the task is set rather than after the mark comes back. It is worth asking about specifically, because the mark often sits oddly low on an otherwise consistent report.

Does MYP have examinations, and does that change the schedule?+

Most MYP assessment is internal and criterion-based with no external papers. Some schools additionally enter students for the IB's optional MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations and ePortfolios and leads to the MYP Certificate. Where it applies, the on-screen format and timing are unfamiliar and need rehearsing, which adds a short block to the MYP 5 calendar. Whether a school enters varies school by school and sometimes year by year, so confirm it with the MYP coordinator.

Why is the school day fuller than the MYP timetable suggests?+

Because the mandatory UAE subjects run alongside it. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, and separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of them. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. The effect for an MYP student is more work coming home into an evening window that was already narrow.

Is a weekend morning better than a weekday session for a younger child?+

Often, and it is underused. A Saturday morning reaches a rested child with no journey at either end and no competition from a club, which for a longer task-planning session in MYP 4 or 5 is a real advantage. The drawback is that weekend slots are easier to cancel than a weekday routine. For MYP 1 to 3 the better answer is usually a short early weekday session, because frequency and routine matter more than length at that age.

What if no early slot is available when we ask?+

We say so rather than selling a six o'clock hour to a twelve-year-old. The alternatives are a different weekday with a free early window, a weekend morning, a shorter session that fits what remains, or a tutor based outside the UAE with genuine MYP experience working to Gulf Standard Time, disclosed as such. MYP coverage is also thinner than Diploma coverage overall, and thinnest in Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education and the less common languages, which we flag before you book.

What should I send to get a useful recommendation for an MYP student?+

Four things about the week and two about the work. The school and the time the day ends; the fixed commitments including clubs and music; the MYP year; and whether a Diploma sibling is competing for the same evening. Then the criterion breakdown behind the last reported grade if the school provides it, and the school's own task sheet for the most recent piece of work, because task design varies between schools under the same programme.

Short, early, and placed where the task cycle needs it

MYP tutoring works when the session is the right length for the age, early enough that the child is still able to contribute, and placed at the stage of a task cycle where it changes the mark. Tell us the school and the finishing time, the MYP year, the fixed commitments and whether an older sibling is competing for the same hour. Send the last task sheet and the criterion marks behind the grade, and we will propose a tutor and run the trial at the time and length we think fits.
