IB and IGCSE tutors for Living Legends families

IB and IGCSE tutors in Living Legends are most often called in for a specific reason: the class has covered the content and the student still cannot do the paper. That gap is not a teaching failure. A Diploma or Year 11 timetable is built to deliver a syllabus once, and the second pass, the timed practice and the criterion-by-criterion work on coursework are left to the student. IB Gram matches your child to a subject specialist who teaches that second pass one-to-one over live video, with the student's own marked script on screen.

  • Specialists who teach the second pass, not a repeat of the classroom lesson
  • Internal Assessment criteria explained letter by letter, with the mark totals named
  • Timed questions marked against the published command-term wording
  • Official syllabus material cited and linked, never copied or handed out

IB & IGCSE in Living Legends

The content was covered. The paper still goes wrong.

Living Legends sits as a single gated community off Emirates Road, a couple of thousand villas and apartments with no school of its own, which means every child here is bussed out to Sports City, Motor City, Barsha South or further. That matters less for this page than what happens when they get back. The schools families here use are mostly strong, well-inspected and properly staffed. Parents still ask for tutors, and the reason they give is almost always the same sentence: the teacher says the topic has been covered, and my child cannot answer the question.

Both statements are usually true at once. A Diploma or IGCSE scheme of work has to deliver a two-year syllabus inside roughly sixty teaching weeks, alongside coursework supervision, mock cycles and the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons that KHDA requires of every Dubai private school whatever its licensed curriculum. There is time to teach each topic properly once. There is rarely time to teach it a second time in a different way for the four students in the set who did not get it the first time, and almost never time to mark thirty timed papers out loud.

That second pass is where marks live. A student who has read the chapter on electrolysis and a student who can answer an eight-mark electrolysis question under time are in different places, and the distance between them is made of specific, nameable skills: reading a command term accurately, laying out working that a marker can follow, choosing which part of the stem to use, knowing when a question wants description and when it wants evaluation. Those are teachable in a one-to-one hour and essentially untouchable in a class of twenty-four.

The other half of the gap is coursework. Internal Assessments carry a fifth to a quarter of most Diploma grades and are marked against named criteria, by letter, with published mark allocations. Students are given the criteria. Very few are taught to read them as a marker reads them, which is why a technically competent science investigation loses marks on research design and a well-written Extended Essay loses the twelve marks allocated to critical thinking. A tutor cannot and must not write any of it. A tutor can make a student read criterion C and see what it is actually asking.

This page is about that gap rather than about a neighbourhood. It sets out where marks go missing topic by topic, what the Internal Assessment criteria ask for and how many marks each carries, which parts of an assessment a school covers and which parts are left to the student, what an hour of genuine independent revision should contain, and what to do with a disappointing mock. Lessons are one-to-one over live video; nobody drives anywhere. Every figure is attributed, and there is no grade claim anywhere on the page.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Living Legends families split across three routes, and each one leaves a different kind of work to the student. The notes below describe what is genuinely independent in each, because that is what a tutoring hour has to fill.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each judged out of eight against published band descriptors. Grades one to seven come from the total. The final year carries the Personal Project, supervised but independently produced. The independent work here is learning to write to a descriptor rather than to a task sheet, which is a genuinely new skill for most students.

Students in this part of Dubai often arrive in MYP from a British Year 7 or from an Indian-curriculum primary, and the shift from mark-out-of-twenty to criterion bands is disorientating for a term or two. The commonest useful session for a Living Legends MYP student is one spent reading a returned task against the descriptor that produced the mark.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Internal Assessments are marked against criteria by letter. The written papers test command terms as hard as they test content, and Higher Level papers assume the student can select from the whole course rather than from the current unit. The independent load is heavy and front-loaded into DP1.

The Diploma students we work with around Sports City and Living Legends are usually fine until the first set of real Higher Level papers in DP1, which are the first assessments that draw on topics taught six months apart. That is the point at which a second pass stops being optional and the request for a tutor arrives.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Eight or nine subjects over two years, with Cambridge subjects tiered as Core or Extended and Pearson papers structured differently again. Codes matter: Cambridge 0580, 0620, 0625, 0610 against Pearson 4MA1, 4CH1, 4PH1, 4BI1. Formula provision, practical assessment and tiering all differ, and a student sitting both boards in one year needs two sets of exam habits.

Schools used by Living Legends families do not all use the same board, and some split boards between departments, so the first thing a tutor here should ask for is the syllabus code rather than the subject name. Getting that wrong wastes four sessions teaching the right content in the wrong format.

DP COREAges 16-19 · Across DP1 and DP2

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

The Extended Essay is a four-thousand-word independent piece scored out of thirty-four, with twelve of those marks on critical thinking alone. Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and an essay on a prescribed title. Neither is taught as a conventional subject, and both are supervised rather than delivered.

These two components generate more late-night panic in Dubai Diploma households than any single subject, because the deadlines are set internally by each school and therefore differ between the schools Living Legends families use. Knowing your own school's internal deadline, not the IB's, is the thing that governs the plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subject notes below are written around where the marks actually go, rather than around what each course contains. That is the information a parent needs before deciding which subject gets the hour.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and the graphic display calculator in every paper. Students who chose it to avoid proof often find statistical inference harder than algebra. Marks go on choosing the wrong test, and on reporting output without saying what it means for the context in the question.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0620 and 4CH1

At IGCSE, moles and electrolysis; at Diploma, energetics and organic mechanisms. The characteristic loss is answering an explain question with a description. That is a command-term problem, and fixing it tends to move several topics at once rather than one.

Biology

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0610 and 4BI1

Feels like memorisation until a six-mark explain question arrives. The gain comes from structuring extended answers against the mark scheme, and at Diploma level from the statistical handling the scientific investigation expects under criterion B.

Geography

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0460

Case-study recall is necessary and not sufficient. Marks are decided by whether the named example answers the specific question asked, and by whether graphs and resource material in the paper are actually used rather than paraphrased.

History

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0470

Source work and essay argument, assessed separately. Students lose marks by narrating chronology instead of answering the question, and in source papers by describing a source rather than using its provenance to judge its value.

Psychology

IB HL and SL

The research methods and ethics content underpins every answer, and students who skip it cannot evaluate a study properly. The Internal Assessment is an experimental replication with a tight structure, and most lost marks are in the design and analysis sections rather than the write-up.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is unseen analysis against a guiding question, Paper 2 a comparative essay, plus the Individual Oral. Reading more does less than learning to build a thesis and sustain it, which is the difference between a competent answer and a high one.

Spanish and French B

IB HL and SL

Productive skills decide the grade, and they are the ones hardest to practise alone. One-to-one over video is genuinely well suited here, because the whole hour can be spoken in the target language instead of three minutes of a classroom period.

Business Management

IB HL and SL

The pre-released case rewards structured early work. Students list tools instead of applying one properly, and Higher Level candidates lose marks by leaving the evaluation thin after a strong analysis section.

Design Technology and Computer Science

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0478 and 0979

Both are documentation-heavy. The artefact is usually fine; the marks go missing in the design cycle write-up and in the testing and evaluation sections, which students treat as paperwork rather than as assessed work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All three patterns below exist to do the same job, which is to put a second pass over material the class has already delivered once. They differ in how the week is shaped around it.

Marked-work cycle

The student sends a timed question or a draft before the lesson, the tutor marks it against the published criteria or mark scheme, and the lesson is spent on the marking rather than on fresh teaching. It is the most efficient use of an hour for a student who has the content and loses marks on technique, and it is the default we recommend from Year 10 upwards.

  • Work submitted at least a day ahead so marking happens before the lesson
  • Marked against the official wording, not against a general impression
  • Each lesson closes with one finishable task for the next cycle
  • A running record of which question types still cost marks

Criterion clinic for coursework

A short series of sessions attached to an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Personal Project, built around the criteria rather than the content. The student brings their own draft, the tutor reads it against each criterion letter, and the questions are returned to the student to answer. No text comes from the tutor at any point.

  • Criterion-by-criterion reading of the student's own draft
  • Topic feasibility challenged early, which is where most marks are won
  • Referencing and presentation checked against the component's own limits
  • A written note of what the student decided, kept for the school's process record

Paired sibling evening

Two children at different levels taught in the same evening, back to back, in a household where only one evening is genuinely free. Over live video this costs nothing extra in travel and lets a family cover a Year 9 and a DP1 in one sitting, which is the arrangement several Living Legends households settle on.

  • Consecutive slots in one evening rather than two separate journeys
  • Different tutors where the levels demand it, one booking either way
  • Shared written summary so a parent reads one note, not two
  • Easy to drop to a single slot during one child's exam term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Living Legends

01

What a school timetable can deliver, and what it cannot

  • Individually marked timed practice, with the marking explained out loud
  • A second explanation in a different register for a topic that did not land
  • Criterion-level reading of the student's own coursework draft
  • Sustained spoken practice in a language, for a whole hour rather than three minutes

A Diploma or IGCSE course has a fixed number of teaching periods, and every one of them is already allocated. The syllabus has to be covered, coursework has to be supervised, mocks have to be set and sat, and in Dubai the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies provision runs alongside the licensed curriculum for every student in every private school. KHDA calculates that provision in forty-minute lesson units and advises that no mandatory subject lesson falls below twenty-five minutes, which is a real claim on the week rather than a notional one.

What fits inside that is one careful pass through the content, with questions, with class discussion, with homework set and broadly checked. What does not fit is a second pass taught differently for the students who did not get the first one, or thirty individually marked timed papers with the student sitting next to the marker while it happens. Teachers know this. It is why the honest answer from a good teacher is often that the topic has been covered and the student needs to practise, which is accurate and not very actionable for a parent.

Naming the gap precisely is more useful than complaining about it. There are four distinct things a class cannot usually provide: individually marked timed practice, a second explanation in a different register, criterion-level reading of a coursework draft, and sustained spoken practice in a language. Every one of those is exactly what a one-to-one hour is good at. Deciding which of the four your child needs is the single most valuable thing you can do before booking anybody.

02

Where the marks actually go missing, topic by topic

Parents often describe a subject as the problem when the problem is two or three topics inside it. A Year 11 who is losing eight marks a paper in Physics is rarely weak at Physics; they are usually losing them in electricity and in the practical-skills paper, and the rest of the subject is fine. Diagnosing that takes a marked script and twenty minutes, and it changes the plan completely, because four sessions on two topics will move a grade where four sessions of general revision will not.

The table below sets out the patterns we see most often across the schools this area uses. It is diagnostic rather than exhaustive, and the right version for your child is the one built from their own returned papers. What is worth noticing is how many of the entries are not content problems at all. Reading a command term, selecting from the whole course rather than the current unit, and laying out working a marker can follow are skills, and they transfer between topics in a way that memorising one more definition does not.

The practical consequence is the order of work. Content gaps are worth closing first if they are genuine holes, because technique cannot operate on knowledge that is absent. After that, almost all remaining gains are technical, and the sessions should look less like teaching and more like marking. A student who has seen every topic once and is still six marks short per paper does not need a fifth explanation of the topic. They need to sit the question, get it marked in front of them, and sit a similar one the following week.

03

The Internal Assessment criteria, read the way a marker reads them

Internal Assessments are marked against named criteria with published mark allocations, and the allocations are not even. Knowing that twelve of the Extended Essay's thirty-four marks sit under critical thinking changes how a student spends their final fortnight, because polishing presentation can earn at most four. Students are given the criteria by their schools. Very few are shown how to read a band descriptor as a marker does, which is to look for the specific thing it names rather than for general quality.

The table below sets out the letters and the marks for the components that come up most in this area. It is reference information, with the official syllabus and subject guides as the source your child's teacher will use; those documents belong to the IB and are not reproduced or supplied here, only cited. Use the table to decide where effort goes, then read the actual descriptor your school issued, because the wording is what gets marked.

The pattern across all of them is the same. The highest-weighted criterion is almost always the one asking for reasoning, and the one students over-invest in is almost always presentation. A science investigation that is beautifully formatted but built on a research question too broad to answer with the data collected has lost marks under research design that no amount of formatting recovers. A tutor's job in a criterion clinic is to ask the awkward question about criterion A in week one, not in week nine.

04

What class covers, what homework covers, and what is left over

It helps to separate three different kinds of work that parents tend to merge. The first is content delivery, which happens in class and is the school's job. The second is consolidation homework, which is set, collected and broadly checked. The third is the preparation that nobody sets and nobody collects: the second attempt at a topic that did not land, the past paper sat under time and then actually marked, the coursework draft revised against a criterion, the vocabulary practised out loud. That third category is where most of the variance between students in the same set comes from.

The table maps the main assessment components against those three categories. The useful column is the fourth, because that is the honest list of what a sixteen-year-old is expected to organise for themselves alongside six subjects, two core components and whatever KHDA-mandated lessons their school timetables. Most students manage some of it. Almost none manage all of it without structure, and that is not a character flaw.

A tutor is one way of imposing structure on the fourth column, and not the only one. A disciplined student with a parent who marks past papers and a quiet room may not need one. What a tutor adds is subject-specific marking and the awkward questions a parent cannot ask about criterion A. What a tutor cannot add is the hours. If the independent work is not happening between sessions, a second lesson will not fix it and will mostly move the work from the student to the tutor.

05

What an hour of independent revision should actually contain

  • Close the notes and answer from memory before checking anything
  • Twenty minutes of the hour under timed conditions, every time
  • Mark against the official wording, not against a general impression
  • Phone out of the room, without exception
  • Finish by writing the next task down, so the next hour starts immediately

Most students, asked to revise for an hour, reread. It feels productive, it produces a sense of familiarity, and it converts into very little under exam conditions, because recognising material is a different cognitive act from retrieving it. The single most reliable change a Year 11 or Diploma student can make is to replace rereading with answering: close the notes, attempt the question, then check. The first few weeks of doing that are unpleasant precisely because it reveals how much was only recognised.

A usable structure for sixty minutes is five minutes recalling the previous session's topic from memory, twenty-five minutes on new or weak material with active questioning, five minutes off the screen, twenty minutes on a timed past-paper question, and five minutes marking it honestly against the mark scheme wording. The marking is the part students skip and the part that matters, because it is where the student finds out that the examiner wanted the reason as well as the observation.

Two further rules make the hour work in a household like this one. The phone leaves the room; a notification costs more than the minute it takes, because the retrieval that was in progress does not resume. And the session ends on a written note of what to do next, which removes the five minutes at the start of the following session spent deciding what to do. Those two habits are worth more than any revision app, and they are free.

06

Command terms: the vocabulary that quietly decides the grade

  • State, describe, explain, deduce, evaluate and compare are different instructions
  • The verb decides the answer's shape before any content is chosen
  • Practise one topic against four command terms and compare the answers
  • Mark schemes are written to the verb, which is why partial answers score low
  • The fix transfers to every subject at once

Every examined subject publishes a list of command terms, and every mark scheme is written against them. State wants a fact. Describe wants observable detail without reasons. Explain wants the reason. Deduce wants a conclusion reached from given information. Evaluate wants a judgement with both sides weighed. Compare wants similarities and differences in the same answer. Students who treat these as synonyms for write about lose marks steadily across every paper, and the loss is invisible in classwork because classroom questions are forgiving.

The symptom is a specific kind of frustration: a student who knows the material well, writes a lot, and gets six out of ten. Reading their script usually shows a description where an explanation was asked for, or an answer that lists three things when the question asked for a judgement between two. This is one of the cheapest things to fix and one of the least likely to be fixed in class, because it needs somebody to sit with the student's own script and point at the verb.

The exercise that works is deliberately repetitive. Take one topic and answer four questions on it with four different command terms, then compare what changed. After a dozen of those a student stops reading past the verb. In the Diploma sciences this single change frequently accounts for several marks a paper, and it transfers across every subject the student takes, which makes it the best return available on a single tutoring hour.

07

Mocks, predicted grades and what to do with a bad one

  • The marked script matters more than the grade printed on the front
  • Ask what evidence a predicted grade was built on, then produce better evidence of that kind
  • Triage by recoverable loss, not by which subject feels worst
  • One subject properly beats three subjects lightly, almost every time
  • Re-read the plan after the next real assessment rather than after a good week

Mocks do two jobs, and parents usually only see the first. They give a grade, which causes the conversation at home, and they generate a marked script, which is the genuinely valuable output. A mock script shows the pattern of loss: whether the marks went on content, on command terms, on timing, or on working that could not be followed. That diagnosis is worth more than the grade attached to it, and it is the thing most likely to end up in a folder unexamined.

Predicted grades carry real weight because university applications use them, and in the Diploma they are issued by the school on the basis of work to date. A disappointing prediction is not a verdict, but it is a signal that the evidence base needs to change. The practical response is to find out what evidence the prediction was built on, do better work of that same kind, and make sure the teacher sees it. Vague improvement does not move a prediction; a better mock or a stronger piece of marked coursework can.

The timing question matters too. A weak mock in November of the final year leaves room to change the trajectory. The same result in March leaves room to change technique and triage subjects, which is a narrower but still real set of options. What does not work in either case is an immediate jump to three tutors across three subjects. Pick the subject where the marked script shows the most recoverable loss, fix that, and see what the next assessment says before expanding.

08

Past papers, mark schemes and what we will not hand you

  • Official papers and mark schemes cited and linked, never reproduced or supplied
  • Teaching uses the student's own school-issued materials and open specimen papers
  • Board websites hold syllabus documents and timetables openly; we link rather than copy
  • Coursework support is questioning and feedback; text must originate with the candidate
  • Grade boundaries vary by session, so no page here publishes a boundary table

Official past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson. We reference them, cite them and teach from the student's own school-issued copies, and we do not reproduce them or supply them as downloads. That is a copyright position rather than a stylistic one, and for unreleased material it is also a malpractice exposure for the student. Any provider offering a library of mark schemes is making somebody else's copyright decision on your behalf.

The legitimate routes are better than parents expect. Schools hold centre access to official material and release it as part of teaching. Cambridge and Pearson publish specimen papers, syllabus documents and timetables openly on their own sites. The IB publishes subject briefs and assessment information. A student with their school's materials and the official specimens has more practice available than they will ever use, and the limiting factor is almost never supply.

The related boundary is coursework. A tutor can teach research skills, read a criterion out loud, question a draft, point out an unsupported conclusion and show how an argument of that shape is built elsewhere. A tutor must not supply text for an assessed piece. The student carries the consequence of malpractice, which can cost the subject or the whole Diploma, and the school is obliged to report it. We say this on every page because at least one page ranking for these searches sells finished assessed work outright.

09

What the first three sessions do for a Living Legends student

  • Session one diagnoses from real marked work and sets one task
  • Session two acts on the diagnosis rather than starting a syllabus tour
  • Session three measures movement using work done independently
  • A named loss, a named intervention and a named next assessment after three hours
  • If the independent task is not being done, that is addressed before anything else

Session one is diagnostic and it needs material. A marked mock script is ideal, a returned coursework draft is nearly as good, and a recent report will do. The tutor works out what kind of loss is happening, which is a different question from which topics are weak, and ends by setting one finishable task. Nothing is taught in a vacuum in that first hour; the point is to stop guessing.

Session two acts on the diagnosis. If the loss is content, the weakest genuine gap gets a second explanation in a different register. If the loss is technique, the task set in session one comes back marked and the marking is the lesson. If the loss is coursework, the draft is read against one criterion letter and the student leaves with questions to answer rather than corrections to copy. The distinction matters: corrections make a better draft once, questions make a better writer.

Session three checks whether anything moved, using work done independently in between. If the task was not done, that is the conversation, because no arrangement survives the tutor being the only person working. If it was done and the same error recurs, the approach changes rather than repeats. By the end of the third hour a parent should be able to name the specific loss, the specific intervention and the next real assessment it will be measured against. If they cannot, the arrangement is not working yet and should be changed.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Living Legends

Living Legends has no school inside it, so the relevant geography is the set of school clusters its families use and what each cluster leaves to the student. The notes below are about cohort and provision rather than about driving times.

Living Legends

A single gated community of villas and towers with no school on site. An IB tutor in Living Legends is therefore working with students from four or five different schools in the same week, which is useful: the same topic goes wrong in different ways depending on who taught it.

Dubai Sports City

The nearest cluster, with large year groups and broad subject offers. An IGCSE tutor in Dubai Sports City most often picks up students from sets that moved quickly through content and left a backlog of unmarked past papers.

Dubai Studio City

Mostly apartment households with a shorter run to the Sports City and Motor City schools. Requests here lean towards MYP and lower-secondary support, where criterion reading is the missing skill rather than content.

Motor City

A school inside the community and a settled cohort. An IB DP tutor in Motor City sees more Higher Level science and maths requests than anywhere else nearby, usually arriving after the first real DP1 paper.

Arabian Ranches 2

Longer-established families, often with two or three children at different stages. Online delivery matters here because two siblings can be taught in the same evening at different levels without a second journey for anyone.

Mudon and Remraam

Larger, newer communities with students spread across many schools. IGCSE tuition in Mudon is commonly booked in the Year 10 spring, once the first mock papers have come back and the gap between coverage and performance is visible.

DAMAC Hills

A mixed cohort with a school on the edge of the community and a good deal of outward travel. The frequent request here is Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge process support, where the school's internal deadline is the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Living Legends

Sports City, Studio City and Motor City

The closest provision to Living Legends and the source of most of our students here. These schools run British and American routes with IGCSE or equivalent at sixteen, and the recurring pattern is strong content delivery with limited capacity for individually marked timed practice in the term before papers.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send marked work, not a description

A mock script, a returned coursework draft or a report page tells a specialist in two minutes what a conversation takes twenty to approximate. It shows whether the loss is content, command terms, timing or presentation, and those four need four different first lessons.

  2. 02

Name the component, the board and the code

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 are not interchangeable, and Higher Level is not Standard Level at speed. Confirming the exact syllabus version and tier before the first lesson prevents four sessions of correct content taught in the wrong format.

  3. 03

    Agree what gets measured

Before the block starts, we write down the next real marker: the January mock, the March Internal Assessment deadline, the next returned paper. Progress is read against that, not against a sense that sessions are going well.

  4. 04

    Run the marked-work cycle

Work goes in ahead of the lesson, comes back marked against the official wording, and the lesson is spent on the marking. Each session closes with one finishable task, and the next session opens by checking it.

  5. 05

Re-plan at the marker, not before

When the agreed assessment arrives, the plan either continues, changes or stops. If the marker has not moved, we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding a second subject and hoping.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Aimed at the second pass

The class delivers the syllabus once, properly. We work on what a single pass cannot provide: individually marked timed practice, a different explanation of a topic that did not land, and criterion-level reading of the student's own draft.

Criteria named, with their marks

Twelve of the Extended Essay's thirty-four marks are for critical thinking, and a science investigation carries six marks each across four criteria. Knowing where the marks sit changes where a student spends their last fortnight.

Marking is the lesson

The most productive hour for a student who has the content is one spent on their own marked script, with the examiner's wording in front of them. That is difficult to deliver in a class of twenty-four and straightforward one to one.

A hard line on assessed work

We teach, question and give feedback. Text for an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Personal Project must originate with the candidate, because the candidate carries the malpractice risk and the seller does not.

Copyright respected, which helps you

We cite and link official board material rather than redistributing it. That keeps your child's position clean and pushes you towards the school's own centre access and the boards' open specimen papers, which are better sources anyway.

Delivered online, stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, holds no regulator accreditation, and operates no premises here. Where no specialist is free in your slot, we say so.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Living Legends: your questions answered

How much independent study does a Diploma student in Living Legends actually need each week?+

The IB Diploma is designed around substantial independent work, and most students in this part of Dubai find that between twelve and eighteen hours a week outside lessons is what the two years require once coursework is live. The number matters less than its composition. An hour spent rereading notes is worth very little; twenty minutes answering a question from memory and then marking it against the official wording is worth a great deal. If your child is putting in long hours and the marks are flat, the problem is almost always the method rather than the quantity.

What are the most common IB Internal Assessment mistakes UAE students make?+

Three, in order. A research question too broad to be answered by the data the student can realistically collect, which loses marks under research design before any writing happens. Evaluation written as a generic wish to repeat the experiment more times, rather than specific weaknesses in this investigation with realistic improvements. And leaving the criteria unread until the final fortnight, by which time the recoverable marks are the low-weighted presentation ones. A tutor cannot write any part of it, but asking the awkward question about the research question in week one is the single most valuable intervention available.

Can a tutor explain the Extended Essay criteria without writing any of it?+

Yes, and that is exactly the work. The essay is scored out of thirty-four, with twelve marks for critical thinking, six each for focus and method, knowledge and understanding and engagement, and four for presentation. A tutor can read the student's own draft against each criterion letter, say where the argument stops being argued, point out that a conclusion overreaches the evidence, challenge a research question that cannot sustain four thousand words, and teach referencing. What a tutor must not do is supply text. The questions go back to the student; the answers have to be theirs.

Which IGCSE subjects do students around Living Legends struggle with most?+

Physics and Chemistry generate the most requests, followed by Extended-tier Mathematics. The pattern in the marked scripts is consistent: in Physics the losses cluster in electricity and the practical-skills paper rather than across the subject; in Chemistry they cluster in moles and electrolysis, usually because multi-step calculations are written without working, so partial credit is unavailable; in Mathematics they appear late in the non-calculator paper as arithmetic slips and as method a marker cannot follow. All three are narrow, diagnosable problems, which is why four sessions on two topics often moves a grade where general revision does not.

How do I tell whether my child needs more teaching or more practice?+

Look at a marked script rather than asking the question in the abstract. If answers are blank or substantially wrong on topics the class has covered, there is a content gap and it needs teaching. If answers are long, broadly correct and still scoring six out of ten, it is almost never content: it is command terms, selection, timing or unreadable working. The two need opposite responses. Teaching a student who already knows the material produces a pleasant hour and no extra marks, and practising with a student who has a genuine hole in their knowledge simply rehearses the hole.

What should an hour of revision actually contain?+

Five minutes recalling last session's topic from memory with the notes closed. Twenty-five minutes on new or weak material, answering questions rather than reading. Five minutes away from the screen. Twenty minutes on a past-paper question under time. Five minutes marking it honestly against the mark scheme wording. The marking is the part students skip and the part that produces the gain, because it is where they discover the examiner wanted the reason and not only the observation. The phone leaves the room, and the hour ends by writing down the next task.

My child's mock grade dropped. What do we do with a disappointing predicted grade?+

Treat it as a statement about the evidence, not about your child. Predicted grades in the Diploma are issued by the school from work to date, so the useful question is which pieces of work they were built on. Then produce better work of that same kind and make sure the teacher sees it. A stronger mock or a better marked coursework piece can move a prediction; a general improvement in attitude usually cannot. Avoid the instinct to hire three tutors across three subjects at once. Pick the subject whose marked script shows the most recoverable loss and start there.

Do you give out past papers and mark schemes?+

No. Official past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, and we cite and link them rather than redistributing them. For unreleased material, circulating it is also a malpractice exposure for the student. The legitimate routes are better anyway: your child's school holds centre access and releases material as part of teaching, and Cambridge, Pearson and the IB publish specimen papers, syllabus documents and timetables openly on their own sites. Supply is almost never the limiting factor; marking the papers that have already been sat usually is.

Which schools do Living Legends families usually send their children to?+

There is no school inside the community, so families use the Sports City, Studio City and Motor City cluster for primary and lower secondary, and travel further for the Diploma. The schools that come up most in our enquiries are GEMS United School Sports City, Victory Heights Primary School, Bradenton Preparatory Academy, GEMS Metropole School, GEMS FirstPoint School, The Aquila School, JESS Arabian Ranches, Nord Anglia International School Dubai and GEMS International School Al Khail. They are named as local context only. IB Gram has no affiliation with, or endorsement from, any of them.

Are command terms really worth teaching separately from the content?+

Yes, and it is one of the cheapest gains available. Every examined subject publishes a command-term list and every mark scheme is written against it. State wants a fact, describe wants observable detail, explain wants the reason, deduce wants a conclusion from given information, evaluate wants a weighed judgement. A student who treats these as synonyms writes a great deal and scores six out of ten. The exercise that fixes it is answering four questions on one topic with four different command terms and comparing the results. It transfers to every subject at once.

Is online tutoring workable for a household with two children at different levels?+

It works better than the alternative, and several families in this community use it precisely for that reason. Because nobody is travelling, two consecutive slots in one evening cost nothing extra in logistics, and the levels can be genuinely different: a Year 9 followed by a DP1, with different tutors where the levels demand it. You get one booking and one written summary rather than two separate arrangements. If only one evening in the week is actually free, this is usually the only pattern that fits it without a car journey in the middle.

How long should the IB Maths exploration be?+

The exploration is a short independent piece, and the marks are not awarded for length. It is scored out of twenty across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with the largest single allocation on the mathematics itself. The commonest failure is a Higher Level student writing at Standard Level depth, or presenting correct mathematics with no commentary explaining the choices. Your child's teacher will issue the current length guidance from the subject guide; we teach to that document rather than restating a figure here, because guidance is revised between syllabus versions.

Does my child need a tutor for Theory of Knowledge?+

Often not for the content, frequently for the structure. Theory of Knowledge is assessed by an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and an essay on a prescribed title, and students who approach either as an opinion piece lose marks that a clear knowledge question and a properly worked counter-position would have secured. Two or three structural sessions tend to be enough: one to test whether the chosen objects or title can actually sustain an argument, one on building the knowledge question, one on the counter-position. Beyond that it is the student's own thinking, and it should be.

Is it better to tutor one subject properly or three subjects lightly?+

One subject properly, in almost every case. Three light arrangements produce three sets of homework, three relationships to manage and three hours out of the week, and they rarely generate enough independent practice in any single subject to move a grade. One subject with a weekly marked-work cycle and thirty minutes of independent practice between sessions moves measurably within a term, and the technique gains usually transfer. If three subjects genuinely need help, that is a signal to look at study method and timetable first rather than to buy three hours.

What does the first month look like for a Year 11 student in Living Legends?+

Four sessions. The first diagnoses from a marked script, names whether the loss is content, command terms, timing or presentation, and sets one finishable task. The second acts on that diagnosis, either closing a genuine content gap or marking the task out loud. The third measures whether anything moved using work done independently. The fourth either continues or changes approach. By the end a parent should be able to name the specific loss, the specific intervention and the next real assessment it will be measured against. If they cannot, the arrangement needs changing rather than extending.

Bring the marked script, and we will work out what is actually missing

If your child's school says the topic has been covered and the paper still goes wrong, the useful next step is not more explanation. It is a marked script, read carefully by somebody who knows what that subject's examiners reward. Send a mock paper, a returned coursework draft or a recent report, tell us the board and the syllabus code, and we will match your child to a specialist who teaches that second pass one-to-one over live video. Nobody drives anywhere, the terms are written down before any block is booked, and the plan is measured against a real assessment rather than a feeling.
