IGCSE Tutor near me in Hor Al Anz

An IGCSE tutor near me in Hor Al Anz is easy to find and hard to choose between, because this part of Deira has one of the densest tuition markets in Dubai. This page gives you the things a map cannot: the command words that decide how an answer is marked, which paper is which in each subject, what a tier actually caps, and five questions worth asking anybody. Lessons run one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Command words explained with what each one requires and what it does not
  • Paper structures set out subject by subject, with the codes named
  • Tier and grade-scale differences explained before they close a route
  • No home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India

IB & IGCSE in Hor Al Anz

In this part of Dubai the problem is not finding a tutor, it is telling them apart

Hor Al Anz sits in Deira, next to Abu Hail and Al Muteena, inland from Al Mamzar, with the Green Line of the Metro running through it. It has one of the most active private tuition markets in the emirate: group classes at centres in Al Qusais and Al Nahda, informal home tuition advertised locally, and a wide spread of prices. A near me search here does not return an empty list. It returns too long a list, with nothing in it that lets a parent choose.

What is missing from that list is the only information that matters: which syllabus has this person actually taught, to which tier, and through to examination. Every option in the results describes itself as an IGCSE tutor. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations with different calculator rules and different past papers, and Core and Extended are different content with different grade ceilings. Someone who has taught one of those competently may have no useful experience of the others.

So this page gives you the things a map cannot. It explains the command words that determine how an answer is marked, which is where most capable students lose marks. It sets out which papers each subject sits and what each paper rewards. It explains what a tier caps and when that decision closes. And it gives five questions that work on any provider in this district, including us, with the warning signs written out.

The reason that matters more than proximity is simple arithmetic. Marks in IGCSE are awarded against a published scheme, not deducted from a perfect answer. A student who writes a thorough paragraph for a two-mark question and a thin answer for a six-mark question has misread two instructions, not misunderstood two topics, and the repair is a fortnight of technique work rather than a term of content. Most families in this district have been sold the term.

It is worth saying plainly that the local market has a genuine advantage over the one in New Dubai. Group classes within walking or Metro distance cost a fraction of private one-to-one work, published Dubai bands start at roughly AED 45 an hour at the budget end, and for a student who is simply behind on material that is a sensible purchase. What those classes cannot do is read one student's script against a mark scheme and tell you which of six different things is costing the marks. Knowing which of those two situations you are in is most of the decision, and it takes one marked paper rather than a consultation.

On delivery, the position is plain. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every lesson here is one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. Where a group class at a local centre is the right purchase for your situation, we will say so on this page rather than pretend otherwise, because in a market this crowded the useful thing is a straight comparison rather than another claim.

At a glance

  • The search returns too many options, none of them distinguishable
  • The only useful filter is the syllabus code and tier a tutor has taught to examination
  • Marks are awarded against a published scheme, not deducted from perfection
  • Command words decide answer length, and misreading them costs capable students most
  • All lessons here are online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three kinds of IGCSE request arrive from this district, and the right purchase differs in each even when the subject is identical.

Years 10-11Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

The examined course

The two years ending in the June or November series. Work splits between content, calculation method and answer technique. For most students who already attend a reasonable school and do their homework, technique is the largest recoverable category and the one nobody is selling, because it looks less like teaching than content revision does.

Schools used by families here include both Cambridge and Pearson centres, occasionally with different boards for different subjects in the same year group. Ask the examinations officer for the code and tier per subject, in writing, before buying anything from anybody.

Years 7-9Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Before the course begins

The years in which the tier is effectively decided, usually on set performance. The skills that decide it are not subject-specific: algebraic manipulation, proportional reasoning, reading a graph, and writing a structured answer. Work here is cheap and it changes which route the school offers, which has a bigger long-run effect than a grade boost in Year 11.

In a district with substantial mid-phase arrival, set placement in Year 8 or 9 can reflect unfamiliarity rather than ability. If the family intends separate sciences and a higher maths tier, the conversation with the school belongs in Year 9, while sets are fluid and nothing has been entered.

After resultsAges 16-17

Resits and the next step

Both boards offer a November route. The useful work is narrow: one subject, the specific papers, a short block built from the script where a copy can be obtained. The decision should rest on marked evidence and on what the receiving school or institution will accept, not on disappointment.

The practical trap is timing. Summer results arrive late in August and the November entry closes within weeks, before most families have seen a script. Ask the examinations officer in the spring when the entry closes and how a script copy is obtained, and the decision stops being a scramble.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects we are asked for from this district. The note on each says what the papers reward rather than what the syllabus contains.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1 / 0607 / 4MB1)

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Four codes in common use locally, with different calculator rules and separate past-paper libraries. The instruction about rounding or exact form is worth more marks than any single topic.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Marks follow laid-out working: formula, substitution, result. A student who writes only answers loses the method marks available on every multi-step question.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Balanced equations, state symbols and charges carry marks. The practical-skills questions are examined in writing and are among the most trainable in the subject.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Command words matter most here, because the difference between describe and explain is the difference between a scoring answer and a plausible one.

English First Language (0500 / 0990)

Single tier

Directed writing and reading responses. Register and task focus decide the mark more than vocabulary does, and most losses are task-reading errors.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

A separate qualification with separate papers. Confirm which one is on the entry; preparation for the two diverges quickly and wastefully if confused.

Economics (0455)

Single tier

Definitions, diagrams and the data-response paper. Brevity scores, and strong writers routinely run out of time by over-explaining early questions.

Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Application to the case material rather than description of a concept. Calculation questions are reliable marks for a numerate student.

Accounting (0452)

Single tier

The layout of a statement is assessed content, not presentation. Format discipline is the fastest available gain in this subject.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

Pseudocode conventions and trace tables. Students who program fluently still lose marks on the written conventions the scheme expects.

Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Double award

Three disciplines, two grades, less content and identical technique demands. Revision has to be planned across disciplines rather than inside one.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

Calculus and trigonometric identities a year early. Sensible once the main grade is secure and a liability while it is not.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways we work with IGCSE students here, all one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

Technique block

Four to six sessions aimed only at how answers are written: command words, answer length against the mark allocation, laid-out working, units and rounding instructions. It is the cheapest intervention we offer and the most commonly correct one for a student who is working hard and stuck in the same grade band.

  • Worked on the student's own answers with the mark scheme open
  • A running log of which command words cost marks
  • Answer length matched to marks available, in both directions
  • A stated end point rather than an open-ended booking

Weekly subject teaching

For a genuine content gap rather than a technique one. One subject, the same tutor, sequenced against the school's teaching order, with work set and marked between sessions. We recommend it only where a marked script shows the gap is content, because teaching a technique problem is slow and expensive.

  • Matched to the exact syllabus code and tier
  • Sequenced against the department's scheme of work
  • Written coverage map a parent can read
  • Monthly short diagnostics rather than weekly testing

Marking only

The student sits papers independently and we mark them line by line against the published scheme, with a short session on the error pattern. It is the lowest-cost option available and suits a self-directed student well. It also pairs sensibly with a group class at a local centre, which can cover content but cannot diagnose one student's script.

  • One short session per marked paper
  • Every lost mark categorised and tallied across papers
  • Works alongside a group class rather than replacing it
  • Lowest cost per week of anything we offer

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hor Al Anz

01

Command words: the vocabulary that decides how an answer is marked

The most common reason a capable IGCSE student underperforms is that they answer the wrong kind of question. Each paper uses a controlled vocabulary of command words, each with an agreed requirement, and examiners apply them literally. State wants a fact. Describe wants an account of what happens. Explain wants reasons, with a chain of reasoning in which each link can earn a mark. Calculate wants working and a value. Suggest wants an applied answer to an unfamiliar situation, where several responses may be acceptable.

Students lose marks in both directions and the second direction is less obvious. Writing an explanation for a question that asked for a description earns nothing extra and consumes minutes that the back of the paper needed. Writing a description where an explanation was wanted earns nothing at all. A student who does both across a paper can lose a noticeable number of marks without a single gap in subject knowledge, which is the most frustrating way to lose a grade and the quickest to fix.

The method is narrow and repetitive. Take the student's own answers, set the published mark scheme beside them, and identify what the scheme awarded that the answer did not supply. Within three or four sessions a student can predict the required answer shape from the command word and the mark allocation alone. That skill transfers to every question in every subject, which is why a technique block is better value than subject teaching for students whose content is actually sound.

One further habit belongs here: counting. A six-mark question wants six distinct scoring points, and depth does not substitute for coverage. Reading the allocation first, planning that many separate points in the margin, and then writing them is mechanical, learnable in two sessions, and pays out on every long-answer question in every paper the student sits.

IGCSE COMMAND WORDS AND WHAT EACH ONE REQUIRES
Command wordWhat the examiner wantsTypical answer lengthThe usual failure
State or giveA fact, a name or a value, with no reasoningA few words, or a value with unitsAdding an explanation that earns nothing and costs time
DescribeAn account of what happens, without reasonsOne point per mark availableSupplying reasons instead, which the scheme is not looking for

SuggestAn applied answer to an unfamiliar situationOne or two reasoned pointsTreating it as recall and repeating a textbook line

02

Which paper is which, subject by subject

Parents are often surprised to learn how differently the papers are structured across subjects their child sits in the same fortnight. Knowing the structure is not trivia: it determines what revision should look like in the final month, because a multiple-choice paper rewards elimination and speed while an extended-response paper rewards planning, and preparing for both in the same way under-serves each.

The pattern across Cambridge separate sciences is a theory paper set alongside a practical-skills component, with most international centres sitting that as a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than a laboratory test. Mathematics sits two papers, with Cambridge taking one of them without a calculator and Pearson allowing a calculator throughout. English qualifications differ according to which of the two English syllabuses the student is entered for, which is the first thing to confirm. Business, economics and accounting typically pair a structured paper with a case or data-based one.

The durations, weightings and exact paper numbers differ by syllabus and by tier, and they are revised from time to time, so the specification on the board's own site is the document to check rather than any summary including this one. What is stable is the type of demand each paper makes, and that is what the table below sets out. Use it to decide what final-month revision should consist of in each subject.

One Cambridge administrative point belongs here because it has caught families out. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, each with its own version of the timetable, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. Ask the school for the version that applies to your centre and keep it.

03

Tiers, grade scales and what a capped grade actually closes

Two things confuse families here and both are worth five minutes. The first is tiering. Cambridge mathematics and the separate sciences are entered at Core or Extended, and Pearson mathematics at Foundation or Higher. The lower tier covers less content and its grade ceiling is capped, which means the top grades are unavailable regardless of how well the paper goes. The department usually decides from set performance in Year 10, and many parents learn the tier when a mock timetable appears in Year 11.

The second is the grade scale. Many current IGCSE syllabuses report on a nine-to-one scale while some still report A* to G, and students may hold a mixture across their subjects. That is normal and it causes anxiety mostly because nobody explains it. What matters practically is not the scale but the ceiling: a capped tier can quietly remove a post-16 route the family assumed was available, and that is a decision taken by default rather than by discussion.

If a science or mathematics route after sixteen is intended, raise the tier question early in Year 10 and ask one specific thing: what would need to improve for a higher tier entry to be considered? That answer is a work plan, and it is far cheaper to act on than a capped grade is to live with. By the spring of Year 11 the entry is lodged and the question has changed to how to get the best out of the tier taken.

The table sets out what to confirm for each subject area. It is deliberately a checklist rather than a reference table, because the specific ceilings and scales vary by syllabus and are published on the board's own site, which is where they should be read.

TIER AND SCALE: WHAT TO CONFIRM, SUBJECT BY SUBJECT

04

What a group class can do, and what only a marked script can

  • A group class covers content cheaply and keeps a week structured
  • A group cannot diagnose one student's script against a mark scheme
  • Content coverage plus periodic one-to-one marking is often the best value
  • One-to-one teaching earns its cost on a real gap, not on reassurance
  • Ask any provider what they will do with a marked paper before you book

This district has a genuine advantage that families in New Dubai do not: plenty of affordable group tuition within walking or Metro distance. It would be dishonest to pretend that is worthless. A group class is a reasonable and cheap way to cover content for a student who is simply behind on material, to add structure to a week, and to keep a reluctant student working alongside peers.

What a group cannot do is diagnose. In a class of ten, nobody reads one student's script closely enough to notice that they lose marks to command words in biology and to abandoned method in physics, and that those two findings would change what the next month should contain. Diagnosis requires someone to sit with one student's answers and the published mark scheme, which is a one-to-one activity by nature rather than by preference.

The sensible conclusion for a budget-conscious family is therefore not either-or. It is content coverage in a group plus periodic one-to-one marking, which is cheaper than weekly private teaching and better targeted than more group hours. We say this knowing it recommends less of our own service than a weekly booking would, because it is what the marked evidence usually supports.

Where one-to-one teaching is genuinely the right purchase is a real content gap that the group pace will not close, a narrow technical problem that needs somebody watching the working appear, or a student whose confidence has gone and who needs to be unobserved by peers while it is rebuilt. Those are specific situations and they are worth paying for. General reassurance is not, and in a crowded market it is the thing most often sold.

05

Five questions worth asking any tutor in this district

  • Which syllabus codes and tiers, taken through to examination?
  • How will the work be marked, and against what?
  • What exactly happens in the first session?
  • Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit?
  • What will you tell me at week four if it is not working?

In a market with this many options, the useful filter is a short list of questions whose answers are verifiable. These five work on any provider, including this one, and the willingness to answer is as informative as the answer itself. We would encourage families here to ask them in the same words of everybody they are considering.

Which syllabus codes and tiers have you taught, and have you taken students through to examination in them? How will you mark my child's work, and against what? What will the first session actually consist of? Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit? And what will you tell me at week four if it is not working? That last question is the one that separates providers who expect to be measured from those who do not.

The permit question is ordinary rather than confrontational. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount as unverified.

One further piece of advice specific to a dense local market: do not pursue an arrangement with your child's own schoolteacher. Reported regulatory rules in Abu Dhabi bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct points the same way. Beyond the rules, it puts a teacher in an awkward position with respect to assessing your child.

06

Study conditions, the Metro and the shape of a Deira evening

  • Bus and Metro arrivals put the earliest realistic slot at 17:00 to 17:30
  • Hard surface, squared paper, own calculator, headphones, camera on the page
  • Siblings get staggered evenings rather than a shared hour
  • Ramadan: fewer, shorter sessions agreed before the month starts
  • Cross-Creek commuters need a later weekday slot than Al Qusais students

Students in this district travel mostly by school bus or on the Green Line, which gives a more predictable arrival than a car in New Dubai traffic without making it early. Those attending the Al Qusais, Al Nahda or Abu Hail cluster are typically home between 15:30 and 16:30; those crossing the Creek arrive later. After food and a change of clothes, the slot that holds across a term is 17:00 to 17:30 at the earliest, and later for the longer commutes.

Apartment study conditions deserve a few minutes of setup. A hard surface rather than a sofa, squared paper and a ruler for graph work, the student's own calculator rather than a phone, and headphones so a busy household is not part of the lesson. The camera is angled at the page rather than the face, because in every one of these subjects the diagnostic value comes from watching the working appear line by line.

Where siblings share a room, which is common here, staggered evenings work and a shared session does not. Two students at different levels in one hour means one is supervised while the other is taught. If a budget covers one child, making that choice deliberately and using a marking clinic for the other is better than splitting the hour and halving the value for both.

Ramadan shifts the pattern for several weeks and Dubai schools adjust their hours. The arrangement that works is fewer and shorter sessions moved to the late morning or the post-Iftar window, with lighter work set between them, agreed before the month begins. For a Year 11 student those weeks often sit close to a mock series, which is exactly why the shift is worth planning rather than improvising.

07

The series, the timetable and what we do not claim

Cambridge IGCSE runs in a June series and a November series. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Those are the windows open to a UAE candidate, and the Cambridge February and March series is offered to India only. That last point is worth stating clearly in a district where many families have direct experience of the Indian system and could reasonably assume the same calendar applies here.

Pearson's published pattern shows the real shape of a year: its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which is why the live official timetable is the document to use rather than a restatement on any page.

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from Cambridge, Pearson, the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education, and no page here will suggest otherwise. We operate no office, centre or branch in the UAE, we do not enter candidates for examinations, and we do not perform Ministry equivalency. A tutoring operation with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute; we hold none because we have no premises.

We also reference and link official syllabus, specimen and timetable documents rather than reproducing them, and we do not supply board-owned papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. Your child's school has legitimate access through its own subscriptions. Every figure on this page carries a source, and we publish no success rates, satisfaction scores or star ratings, because we could not produce the data behind any of them and a number without a method is decoration.

Where we tutor

The Deira neighbourhoods this search comes from

What differs between these areas is the school commute and the shape of the evening, not the quality of the tuition available. These are the ones that matter for a Hor Al Anz family.

Hor Al Anz East

Identical apartment profile and the same bus timings. Sessions settle at 17:00 to 17:30, once the student is home, fed and changed.

Abu Hail

On the Green Line, so older students arrive on a predictable schedule rather than a traffic-dependent one. The easiest nearby area in which to hold a fixed weekly slot.

Al Muteena and Al Murar

Dense older Deira blocks where study space is shared with the household. The practical setup conversation matters more here than any choice of platform.

Al Mamzar

Coastward, with several of the schools our students attend. Short journeys mean an earlier session is genuinely workable for these students.

Al Qusais

Inland along the Metro, with the largest nearby school cluster and the densest concentration of tuition centres. Worth knowing because that density is why choosing is hard.

Al Nahda

On the Sharjah boundary, with many families crossing it daily. Cross-emirate traffic is the main reason early sessions fail and online sessions hold.

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

Across the Creek, with some of the nearest British-curriculum provision. A longer commute, so these students need a later weekday slot.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Hor Al Anz

Al Qusais, Al Nahda, Abu Hail and Al Mamzar

The main cluster for this district, mixing British-curriculum and Indian-curriculum schools. Both boards appear across it, which is exactly why the syllabus code rather than the school name is the thing to establish before buying support.

  • The Westminster School
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • The Apple International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School Al Mamzar
  • Deira Private School

Across the Creek: Al Garhoud, Festival City, Oud Metha

Longer-established schools used by families from this area, with a later return journey. The mock and internal assessment calendars here differ from the Al Qusais cluster, which matters in a household with children in both.

  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Deira International School
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • Dubai Gem Private School

Schools are named only to describe the local education market. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for codes and tiers

One email to the examinations officer requesting the syllabus code and tier for each subject on the entry, plus the zone-correct Cambridge timetable where it applies. In a district where both boards are in use, this is the single most valuable piece of administration a parent can do, and it costs nothing.

  2. 02

    Send one marked paper

The script rather than the grade. We categorise every lost mark into command word, answer length, abandoned method, content gap, arithmetic or timing, and the tally decides what to buy. It frequently shows that a technique block of four sessions would do what a term of teaching was being considered for.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson on the student's own answers

The first session is free and is spent with the mark scheme open beside your child's own work, not on a conversation about services. A short written note follows naming the two priority items and what order to address them in, and that note is yours whether you book anything or not.

  4. 04

Choose the cheapest option that fits the diagnosis

If the problem is technique, a short block. If it is a real content gap, weekly teaching. If the student works well alone, marking only. If a group class at a local centre plus periodic marking covers it, we will say so, even though it means recommending less of our own service than a weekly booking would.

  5. 05

Review at week four and stop when it is done

A second marked paper at week four, with the error tally compared against week one. If the pattern has moved and the problem is solved, we say so and finish. If it has not, we change the approach or the tutor. Open-ended monthly renewal suits a provider more than a family.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Listed by syllabus code, which is what distinguishes tutors

In a district with this many options, every provider describes itself identically. Tutors here are listed by the codes and tiers they have taught to examination, because Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations and the past papers do not transfer.

Technique treated as the main event

For most students who attend a reasonable school and do the work, command words and answer length are the largest recoverable category. It is also the one nobody sells, because it looks less like teaching than content revision. A four-session block often does what a term was being bought for.

A checklist that works against us too

The five questions on this page can be asked of any provider in Deira including this one, and the warning signs are written out. A checklist that only flatters its author is advertising rather than advice.

We will recommend a group class when it fits

Local centres cover content cheaply and keep a week structured. What they cannot do is diagnose one student's script. Content coverage plus periodic one-to-one marking is frequently the best value available here, and we say so even though it is less of our service.

Sessions that survive the week

Nothing is lost to a cross-Creek commute or to cross-emirate traffic from Al Nahda, because nobody travels to the lesson. Over an eight-week block the number of sessions that actually happen matters more than any plausible difference between two competent tutors.

Plain about what we are not

No board or regulator approval, no UAE premises, no home visits in the Emirates, no candidate entries and no equivalency service. Where a regulator is named on this page it is explained and linked rather than used as a credential.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hor Al Anz: your questions answered

There are dozens of IGCSE tutors near Hor Al Anz. How do we choose?+

By asking which syllabus codes and tiers they have taught through to examination, because that is the only answer that distinguishes them. Every option in a local search describes itself as an IGCSE tutor, and Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607, Pearson 4MA1 and Pearson 4MB1 are four different examinations with different calculator rules and separate past-paper libraries. Add three more questions: how will you mark my child's work and against what, what happens in the first session, and what will you tell me at week four if it is not working?

Does IB Gram provide tutors who come to homes in Deira?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family address is a service we run only in India. Sessions here are one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. In this district that mainly buys reliability and choice: nothing is lost to cross-Creek or cross-emirate traffic, and you select from everyone who has taught your child's syllabus code rather than from those willing to travel to Abu Hail on a weekday evening.

What is the difference between describe and explain in an IGCSE answer?+

Describe asks for an account of what happens, with roughly one point per mark available and no reasoning required. Explain asks for reasons or causes in a linked chain, where each link can earn a mark. Supplying reasons to a describe question earns nothing extra and consumes time the back of the paper needed; supplying a description where an explanation was wanted earns nothing at all. Across a full paper a student who confuses the two loses a noticeable number of marks with no gap in subject knowledge, which is the fastest loss to repair.

How many points does a six-mark question need?+

Six distinct scoring points, which is not the same as six sentences or a thorough paragraph. Marks are awarded against a published scheme rather than deducted from a perfect answer, so three strong points score three. The mechanical fix is to read the allocation first, plan that number of separate points in the margin, then write them using precise terminology rather than an approximation. Two sessions working on the student's own answers usually establishes the habit, and the gain shows up on every long-answer question in every subject.

Is a group class at a local centre enough?+

For content coverage, often yes. A group class is a cheap and reasonable way to work through material a student is simply behind on, and to keep a week structured. What it cannot do is diagnose: in a class of ten, nobody reads one student's script closely enough to notice that marks are going to command words in biology and abandoned method in physics. The best value for many families here is group content coverage plus periodic one-to-one marking, which is cheaper than weekly private teaching and better targeted than more group hours.

What does Core tier actually cap, and when is it decided?+

Core covers less content than Extended and its grade ceiling is capped, so the top grades are unavailable regardless of performance on the day. The decision is usually made by the department from set performance during Year 10, and many parents discover the tier when a Year 11 mock timetable arrives. If a science or mathematics route after sixteen is intended, raise it early in Year 10 and ask what specifically would need to improve for an Extended entry to be considered. That answer is a work plan with a real deadline on it.

Why do grades appear as nine to one in some subjects and letters in others?+

Because syllabuses have moved to the numeric scale at different times, so a student can legitimately hold a mixture across their subjects. It causes more anxiety than it should, largely because nobody explains it. What matters practically is not the scale but the ceiling imposed by the tier, since a capped tier can quietly close a post-16 route. If you are unsure which scale applies to a given subject, the syllabus page on the board's own site states it, and the school's examinations officer can confirm what appears on the entry.

How are practical science skills assessed if lessons happen on a screen?+

Laboratory work for school purposes happens at school under the school's supervision, and no tutor takes part in it. What tutoring affects is the written assessment of practical skills, which most international centres sit as an alternative-to-practical paper. The question types are predictable: reading an instrument to the correct precision, identifying independent, dependent and controlled variables, spotting the flaw in a described method, completing a results table with headings and units, plotting and interpreting a graph, and suggesting a specific improvement rather than a generic one.

Can four sessions really make a difference?+

Where the problem is technique rather than content, yes, and that is more often the case than the market admits. A student who attends a reasonable school, does the homework and still lands in the same grade band is usually losing marks to command words, answer length, abandoned method and rounding instructions. Those are mechanical and they respond quickly. Where a marked script shows a genuine content gap in three topics, four sessions will not fix it and we will say so rather than selling a block that cannot deliver.

What should the first session with any tutor consist of?+

Looking at the student's own marked work with the published mark scheme open, and categorising where the marks went. Not a diagnostic test the provider has written, not a conversation about goals, and not the first topic of the syllabus. A tutor who starts teaching before seeing a script is working blind, and in a crowded market the answer to what happens in session one is one of the quickest ways to tell providers apart. Ask it before you pay for anything.

When do IGCSE candidates in Dubai actually sit their papers?+

Cambridge IGCSE runs a June series and a November series; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Dubai centres normally enter the main Year 11 cohort for the summer window and use November as the resit route. The Cambridge February and March series is offered to India only, which matters here because many families have direct experience of the Indian system. Ask the school for the zone-correct Cambridge timetable, since every centre sits in one of six administrative zones and the wrong version is the school's problem to prevent and yours to check.

Can we get a copy of our child's marked examination script?+

Ask the school's examinations officer, because access runs through the centre rather than directly to a family, and the process and deadlines differ by board. It is worth asking in the spring rather than in August, so the route is known before results arrive. A script is genuinely useful if a resit is being considered, because it shows whether marks were lost to technique or to content, and those two point to very different plans and very different amounts of work.

Do tutors working in Deira need a UAE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated through the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any amount you read as unverified, and treat irritation at the question as informative.

Can two children in the same family share a session?+

We would advise against it. Two students at different levels in one hour means one is supervised while the other is taught, and neither gets the diagnostic value that comes from a tutor watching one student's working appear. Where a budget covers one child's tuition, it is better to choose deliberately, fund the subject that gives the widest benefit, and use a marking clinic for the second child. Splitting an hour halves the value for both rather than doubling it.

Send the script, not the grade

In a district with this much tuition available, the thing that changes an outcome is not finding somebody but knowing what to ask them for. Send us one marked paper and the syllabus codes from the entry, and we will tell you whether the marks are going to command words, answer length, abandoned method or a genuine content gap, and therefore whether you need four sessions, a term, or a marking clinic alongside the group class your child already attends. If the honest answer involves less of our service, that is what the note will say. The trial lesson is free. Everything runs one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
