IB MYP Tutor in Hor Al Anz

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in Hor Al Anz raises a question families in Al Muteena, Al Qusais and Deira ask in the same week: does the neighbourhood change the answer? For MYP it does not, and the reason is arithmetic. The Middle Years Programme is assessed on published criteria rather than on a paper, MYP cohorts in any one district are small, and the specialist who understands Criterion C in MYP Sciences is rarely the specialist who lives nearby. Lessons run live online, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • MYP criteria A to D taught with the published descriptors open
  • Criteria totals out of 32 converted to the 1-7 grade honestly

IB & IGCSE in Hor Al Anz

Why the neighbourhood matters less for MYP than for almost anything else

Families in Hor Al Anz comparing tutoring options usually start by comparing places. Is there more choice in Deira? Does Al Qusais have better coverage? Would moving the search to Al Garhoud, where more of the international schools sit, turn up a stronger shortlist? Those are reasonable questions and for some subjects they have real answers. For the Middle Years Programme they mostly do not, and it is worth understanding why before spending a fortnight on the comparison.

The first reason is cohort size. MYP is carried by a small slice of the Dubai private sector; International Baccalaureate students make up roughly seven per cent of the emirate's private school population against thirty-seven per cent on UK curricula and twenty-six per cent on Indian ones. In the older northern districts that slice is thinner still, because the schools closest to Hor Al Anz lean British and Indian. The pool of locally resident tutors who genuinely know MYP assessment in any single district is therefore small no matter which district you pick.

The second reason is what MYP tutoring actually requires. There is no external paper for most of the programme, no past-paper archive to drill, and no mark scheme in the IGCSE sense. Marks come from four criteria per subject, each scored out of eight against published descriptors, and the gap between a 5 and a 7 is usually a gap in how the student addresses the descriptor rather than in what they know. A tutor who has read those descriptors and marked against them is useful. A strong graduate in the subject who has not is often not.

The third reason is scheduling. MYP students are younger than Diploma students, their homework load is lumpy around unit deadlines rather than steady, and the useful session often needs to happen the evening before a task is due. A tutor who has to drive from one district to another cannot absorb that kind of last-minute shift. A tutor on video can.

Put those together and the honest answer to the comparison question is that Hor Al Anz, Al Muteena, Deira and Al Qusais are the same market for MYP, and the variable that actually changes outcomes is whether the tutor understands criterion-based assessment. That is a selection question, not a geography question. The rest of this page is about how to answer it, and what the programme asks of a student in each subject group.

One more thing is worth saying plainly before the detail. A parent comparing districts is usually trying to answer a different question underneath: am I paying for something I cannot judge? MYP makes that worse than most programmes, because there is no percentage to check and no past paper to compare against. The antidote is to insist on the criterion language in every conversation. Ask the tutor which criterion the session targeted, which band the work sat in before and after, and what the descriptor for the next band requires. A tutor who can answer those three questions every week is accountable in a way a district search can never make them, and a tutor who cannot is expensive at any hourly rate.

At a glance

  • MYP uses four criteria per subject, each marked out of 8, totalling 32
  • The 1-7 grade comes from criteria boundaries, not from a percentage
  • There is no public past-paper archive for most of the programme
  • MYP 5 adds the Personal Project, assessed on its own criteria
  • Dubai IB enrolment is a minority of the private sector, so local MYP tutor supply is thin in every district
  • Online delivery removes the district variable entirely
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP sits in the middle of a longer sequence, and a tutor needs to know which end of it the family is thinking about, because the right MYP work differs depending on what comes next.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups studied concurrently, each assessed against four criteria out of eight. Criteria names differ by group: Sciences uses knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Language and Literature uses analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. The criteria are the assessment, so they are also the curriculum for tutoring purposes.

In Dubai, MYP schools are inspected by KHDA on the same six-band scale as every other private school, and they must also deliver Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside the IB framework. That means a Hor Al Anz MYP student carries mandatory UAE subjects on top of eight subject groups, which compresses the week more than the programme outline suggests.

MYP 5Age 15-16 · the final MYP year

MYP 5 and the Personal Project

The year that decides what MYP looks like on paper. Students carry out the Personal Project, an extended independent piece assessed on its own criteria, alongside final subject assessment. Schools that enter candidates for MYP eAssessment produce an IB-validated certificate; schools that do not award school-based MYP grades instead. The two routes feel similar in class and look different on an application.

Dubai families moving between schools mid-MYP sometimes cross between an eAssessment school and a school-based one without being told. It changes nothing about teaching and quite a lot about what the final record says, so it is worth asking the school directly which route it uses before MYP 5 begins.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

The most common destination for an MYP 5 student in Dubai. The jump is real: DP is examined externally, graded 1 to 7 per subject on papers rather than criteria, and adds Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Students who excelled at MYP criteria work sometimes stumble in DP term one purely on timed written examination technique, which MYP never asked them to develop.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating around sixteen thousand eight hundred new places across the sector. For an MYP 3 or 4 student in the Deira belt that widens the DP options available by the time they reach Year 12, including schools currently full.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The IGCSE alternative at 16

The other thing a Dubai student of this age might be doing, and the comparison most Hor Al Anz parents are implicitly making. IGCSE is externally examined with public past papers, tiered in several subjects, and produces a subject-by-subject certificate at 16. MYP produces criterion-referenced grades and, on the eAssessment route, an IB certificate.

Many schools near Hor Al Anz run IGCSE rather than MYP, which is why a family here often has one child on each. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, five accredited IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3 or better are required, excluding Arabic and Islamic education. MYP alone is not an equivalency route; the Diploma that follows it is the qualification that matters.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the MYP subject groups Hor Al Anz families most often ask about, described by what the criteria reward rather than by syllabus content, because in MYP the criteria are what is marked.

MYP Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Criterion A rewards accurate knowledge and understanding; Criterion B asks the student to investigate a pattern and justify a general rule; Criterion C is communication, where working and notation carry marks; Criterion D applies mathematics to a real-life context. Most lost marks sit in B and D, where students produce an answer without the justification the descriptor demands.

MYP Sciences

Integrated or by discipline

Inquiring and designing is the criterion that separates grades: a testable question, a hypothesis with scientific reasoning, named independent, dependent and controlled variables, and a method someone else could follow. Processing and evaluating wants real error discussion, not a sentence saying the experiment went well.

MYP Language and Literature

English and other school languages

Analysing asks for interpretation supported by specific textual evidence; organising marks structure and register; producing text marks creative and critical choices; using language marks accuracy and range. Students who write fluently but never quote precisely stall at a 5 and cannot see why.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1 to 6

Phase placement, not year group, decides what is expected. A student placed in Phase 3 is assessed against Phase 3 descriptors across listening, reading, speaking and writing, so a parent comparing two children's grades is often comparing two different standards entirely.

MYP Individuals and Societies

History, Geography, Economics strands

Investigating rewards a focused research question and a documented process; the thinking critically criterion rewards weighing evidence and recognising different perspectives. Narrative answers that retell events score in the middle band however well written.

MYP Design

Product and digital design

Assessed almost entirely on the design cycle: inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, evaluating. The finished artefact matters less than the documented reasoning, which surprises students who put their effort into the build and their last hour into the folder.

MYP Arts

Visual, music, drama

The process journal carries real marks. Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding are all evidenced through documented development rather than through the final performance or piece alone.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Planning for performance and reflecting and improving performance are written criteria, and they are where students who are strong athletes lose grades. The evidence is the written plan and the reflection, not the sport.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal as the evidence base. The commonest failure is a product completed well and a journal assembled in a weekend, which caps the grade regardless of how good the product is.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed with their own criteria on disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. Students treat them as a double homework and lose marks for not making the connection between subjects explicit, which is the entire point of the unit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes cover nearly every MYP request from this part of Dubai. All run live over video; none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Criterion-focused weekly session

One subject group a week with the school's published descriptors open on screen. The student brings the task sheet and the criteria strands being assessed, and the session is spent turning a mid-band response into an upper-band one against the actual wording. This is the format that moves an MYP grade fastest because it addresses what is marked.

  • Descriptors open, not paraphrased from memory
  • Student's own draft used as the working material
  • Strand-by-strand marking explained aloud
  • One improvement target carried to the next task

Pre-deadline task clinic

A short booked session in the days before a unit task or investigation is due, used for structure and criteria alignment rather than content delivery. MYP workload arrives in lumps, and a flexible slot the evening before a Design folder deadline is worth more than a fixed hour at a quiet time of term.

  • Booked around unit deadlines rather than weekly
  • Focus on structure, evidence and criteria coverage
  • Student writes; the tutor questions and feeds back
  • No editing of assessed work to completion

MYP to DP or IGCSE transition block

A block of sessions in MYP 5 aimed at the next programme rather than the current one. For DP-bound students that means timed written examination technique MYP never required. For students moving to IGCSE it means tier awareness, past papers and mark-scheme discipline.

  • Timed writing under examination conditions
  • Command-term work for externally marked papers
  • Subject selection advice grounded in prior attainment
  • Gap mapping between MYP content and the next syllabus

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hor Al Anz

01

Hor Al Anz against the next district over: what actually differs for an MYP family

Set Hor Al Anz beside Al Muteena, Deira, Al Qusais and Al Garhoud and compare the things that genuinely vary. School stock varies: Al Garhoud carries more IB provision than the northern districts, which lean British and Indian. Commute varies: a student at a school inside the Deira grid is home by mid-afternoon, a student bussed to Oud Metha often is not. Housing stock varies, which changes whether a student has a quiet room for a video session or shares a table with siblings.

What does not vary in any useful way is the supply of tutors who understand MYP assessment. IB students are a minority of the Dubai private sector, the northern districts carry less of that minority than Dubai Hills or the Marina corridor, and MYP specifically is a narrower specialism than IB Diploma teaching. A family that spends three weeks widening its search from Hor Al Anz to Deira to Al Qusais has widened the radius without widening the pool in any meaningful way.

The comparison that does pay is between tutors, not districts. Ask a candidate which criteria the subject uses and what the top band of Criterion B actually says. A tutor who answers from the descriptors is useful at any distance. A tutor who talks about the subject in general terms will produce a student who understands more and scores the same, which is the specific failure mode MYP tutoring is prone to.

That is why the answer comes out the same in every district in this cluster: choose on criterion fluency and on the ability to take a session the evening before a deadline, and accept that the tutor will not be local. Once the lesson is on video the geography stops being a variable at all, which is a better outcome for a Hor Al Anz family than it first sounds.

How MYP marking works, and why a 5 and a 7 can look identical to a parent

MYP does not produce percentages. Each subject group is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, and the four marks are combined into a total out of thirty-two which the school converts to a 1 to 7 grade using published boundaries. The consequence is that a student can know the subject well and still sit at a 5, because one criterion is dragging the total down while the others are strong.

That is almost invisible on a report card. A parent reads a 5 in Sciences and assumes a general weakness. The underlying marks might be seven for knowing and understanding, seven for processing and evaluating, six for reflecting, and three for inquiring and designing, because the student never writes a properly controlled method. The fix there is narrow and fast, and it is a completely different intervention from more science teaching.

So the first thing a useful MYP tutor asks for is the criterion breakdown, not the grade. Most Dubai schools publish it on the reporting portal, strand by strand. With that in hand the tutoring plan writes itself: find the lowest criterion, read the descriptor for the band above, and work on exactly the behaviour the descriptor names.

This is also why MYP tutoring resists the format that works for IGCSE. There is no large public archive of past papers to drill through. The raw material is the student's own task, the school's descriptors, and the gap between them. A tutor who cannot work that way has to invent generic exercises, and generic exercises do not move criterion marks.

03

The Personal Project, and the honest limit of what a tutor can do

The Personal Project is the visible landmark of MYP 5 and the piece of work families most often want help with. It is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, and the evidence is the process journal as much as the product. Students routinely build something good and document it badly, which caps the grade in a way that feels unfair and is entirely predictable.

What a tutor can do here is coach the process. That means helping the student set a goal that is specific enough to be assessed, planning backwards from the school's internal deadlines, keeping the journal honest and contemporaneous rather than reconstructed, and reading the criteria descriptors together so the student knows what evidence each band expects. It also means asking hard questions at the halfway point, which is when most projects quietly stall.

What a tutor must not do is produce any part of the work. Not write the journal, not draft the report, not make the product, not edit the writing to completion. The project has to be the student's own, and a tutor who crosses that line has created an academic-honesty problem for the student that no grade is worth. This is a real distinction in this market: some operations selling IB support in the Gulf advertise finished assessed work outright, and families should ask any provider directly what it will and will not produce.

The practical version of the boundary is easy to apply. If the tutor is typing, something has gone wrong. If the tutor is asking what evidence the student has for a claim in the journal and the student is doing the typing, the session is doing its job.

04

What MYP does not teach, and why that shows up in Year 12

  • MYP assesses criteria; DP and IGCSE assess timed papers
  • Command-term discipline is not drilled by MYP descriptors
  • Open-resource tasks do not train recall under pressure
  • A short timed-writing block in MYP 5 absorbs most of the shock

MYP builds a set of genuinely useful habits: inquiry, documented process, reflection, making connections between subjects. It does not build timed written examination technique, because almost nothing in the programme is a timed written examination. Students arriving in the IB Diploma or in an A Level course from a strong MYP background frequently have a difficult first term for that reason alone.

The specific gaps are consistent. Writing to a clock, where a good answer unfinished scores less than an adequate answer completed. Command-term discipline, where state, explain, evaluate and discuss carry different mark expectations and MYP descriptors do not drill that distinction. Recall under pressure, because MYP tasks are usually open-resource. And answering the question asked rather than the question the student prepared for, which coursework rewards and examinations punish.

None of that is an argument against MYP. It is an argument for spending part of MYP 5 on the transition rather than only on the current year's grades. A block of timed writing under examination conditions in the final MYP terms costs a handful of sessions and removes most of the first-term DP shock. Families in Hor Al Anz whose children are heading to a DP school in Al Garhoud or further south are the ones who benefit most, because the school change and the assessment change land in the same September.

The same logic applies in reverse for a student leaving MYP for IGCSE at the end of Year 9, which happens often in this part of Dubai because so many nearby schools are IGCSE centres. That student needs past papers, mark schemes and tier awareness quickly, and the switch in how work is judged is larger than the switch in content.

05

eAssessment or school-based: two MYP 5 routes that look the same in class

Not every MYP school ends the programme the same way. Some enter candidates for MYP eAssessment, which produces an IB-validated certificate based on on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios. Others award school-based MYP grades against the same criteria without external validation. Day to day the teaching is similar; the record at the end is not.

For most Dubai families this matters only at the edges, because the Diploma that follows is the qualification universities read. It matters more for a family likely to move country or school at 16, where an externally validated certificate travels better than a school report does. It also matters for a student who wants evidence of achievement at 16 and will not have an IGCSE certificate to show.

The question is worth asking the school early rather than discovering the answer in MYP 5. A school's assessment policy states the route, and the admissions office will say plainly if asked. In the Deira belt, where several families move children between an MYP school and an IGCSE school at the end of Year 9, knowing which route the current school uses changes the calculation about whether to move at all.

For tutoring purposes the route changes the final term rather than the programme. An eAssessment cohort needs on-screen examination practice and ePortfolio curation to a deadline. A school-based cohort needs the same criterion work it has needed all along, carried through to the final tasks. Either way the preparation is the student's own work, coached rather than produced.

06

What MYP tutoring costs in Dubai, and why the cheapest tier rarely fits

Published Dubai tutoring rates split into bands that are worth reading before shortlisting anyone. The lowest band is genuinely cheap: EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52. That band is mostly university students and group-adjacent delivery. The next band up, qualified subject tutors working online, is where Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. Specialist work runs higher: TutorChase lists around AED 270, Bestimate's specialist band is AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED charges AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included. These are the providers' own published figures.

MYP is the case where the cheapest band fits worst, and the reason is structural rather than snobbish. A budget tutor can usually teach the content of MYP Mathematics or Sciences perfectly well, because the content is not advanced. What that tutor often cannot do is mark a student's work against four published criteria and explain why a response sits in the fourth band rather than the sixth. Without that, the student learns more and the grade does not move, which is the outcome families complain about most.

Monthly figures are the more useful frame for a parent budgeting. Bestimate's estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-band, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Monthly packages circulating in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Worth adding for context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the following academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a family already paying Dubai school fees, a flat fee year is the window in which a tutoring line becomes affordable, and it is a reasonable moment to commit to a weekly slot rather than ad hoc crisis sessions.

Online delivery, in-home tutoring and what IB Gram actually sells in the UAE

In-home tutoring is a real Dubai market with published rates of AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to 300 for comparably qualified tutors working online. Families choose it for reasons that make sense: a younger child who concentrates better with someone in the room, a parent who wants to overhear the session, a household where screen time is already contested.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will arrive at an address in Dubai or anywhere else in the Emirates. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one, live over video, on Gulf Standard Time. Stating that on the page is more useful than letting a family find out after a booking.

For MYP the online argument is unusually strong. The material a session works on is the student's own digital task, the school's descriptors and the reporting portal, all of which live on a screen anyway. Sharing and annotating a Design folder or a Sciences lab report over video is easier than passing a laptop across a table. And because MYP deadlines arrive in bursts, a session that can be moved to Thursday evening because a task is due Friday is worth more than a fixed Tuesday that cannot shift.

There is one honest caveat. A twelve-year-old working alone at a screen needs more structure than a sixteen-year-old does, which is why early MYP sessions run shorter, with clearer written follow-ups and an expectation that a parent sees the session notes. That is a design choice rather than a limitation of the format, and it is how the younger end of the programme is handled.

The UAE subjects and the Ramadan term that shape an MYP week

An MYP student in Dubai carries more than eight subject groups. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in every Dubai private school whatever international curriculum it is licensed for, with its requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Those subjects occupy real timetable hours, and they come with rules about how they are organised: schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups are strictly prohibited.

Instructional time for these subjects is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, and schools may vary lesson length so long as the weekly total is met, with KHDA advising that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes. KHDA also requires that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a credential a parent can reasonably ask the school about.

The scheduling consequence for tutoring is simple: the week is fuller than the MYP subject list suggests, so a plan that assumes several free evenings will fail. One well-used weekly session plus bookable clinics around deadlines is a more realistic shape than three fixed sessions a student cannot sustain.

Ramadan compresses the school day and moves family routines, and in the older northern districts that usually means sessions shift to after Iftar or to the weekend for the month. Because delivery is online, that shift costs nothing but a calendar change. Students in MYP 5 with a Personal Project deadline in the spring term should plan the Ramadan weeks explicitly rather than hope to absorb them, because the journal is the part that suffers first.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Hor Al Anz

This page is written as a comparison, so the neighbourhoods below are described by what genuinely differs for an MYP family: which schools the district feeds, how late the student gets home, and how thin the local MYP tutor supply actually is.

Hor Al Anz and Hor Al Anz East

Mostly British and Indian-curriculum schools within a short drive, so MYP students here are usually bussed out of the district. That means later arrival home and a realistic session start nearer six than four.

Al Muteena

Shares almost the same school set as Hor Al Anz and the same commute pattern. For MYP purposes the two districts are a single market; nothing in tutor availability changes between them.

Deira

The largest school stock in the area but weighted towards IGCSE and Indian curricula rather than IB. More schools does not mean more MYP specialists, which is the point most comparison searches miss.

Al Garhoud

Where several of the area's IB and British international schools sit. MYP students from across the northern districts converge here, which is why their sessions cluster in the same evening slots.

Al Qusais

A dense mix of Indian and British-curriculum secondaries. Families often have one child on CBSE and one in MYP, and the two assessment vocabularies at home are genuinely different.

Al Nahda and Al Mamzar

Closest to the Sharjah boundary, with a share of students in Sharjah-side schools regulated by SPEA rather than KHDA. Border traffic is the main constraint on a weekday slot.

Oud Metha and Bur Dubai

A short drive south and home to more IB provision. Students bussed here from Hor Al Anz arrive back late enough that weekend sessions are often the practical choice.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion breakdown, not the grade

Most Dubai schools publish MYP marks strand by strand on the reporting portal. A screenshot of that breakdown for the weakest subject tells a tutor more than a term's worth of general conversation, because it names which of the four criteria is dragging the total.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on the student's own task

The trial works on a real piece of the student's work with the school's descriptors open, and ends with the tutor naming the criterion to target and what the band above actually asks for. No payment is taken before this happens.

  3. 03

Pick a weekly slot that survives the school run

Students bussed from Hor Al Anz to Al Garhoud or Oud Metha often are not home before five, so the slot is set from the real arrival time rather than the timetable. Ramadan and mock weeks move the slot rather than cancelling the habit.

    Add clinics around unit deadlines

MYP workload arrives in bursts. Alongside the weekly session, a short bookable clinic in the days before a Design folder, an investigation or a Personal Project checkpoint is where most of the grade movement happens, because it addresses the task being marked.

  5. 05

Review against descriptors every few weeks

Progress is checked by re-reading the criterion descriptors and asking which band the student's latest work sits in and why. That is a harder conversation than asking whether they feel more confident, and it is the one that predicts the next report.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Descriptors open, every session

MYP is marked against published criteria, so that is the material a session works from. A tutor paraphrasing the criteria from memory is guessing at the thing being assessed, and the student's grade reflects the guess.

The lowest criterion first

One weak criterion out of four caps an otherwise strong profile. Finding it and working the specific behaviour the next band describes moves a grade faster than broad subject revision does, and it is cheaper in sessions.

The Personal Project coached, never written

We help a student plan, keep an honest journal and read the criteria. We do not draft, edit to completion or produce any part of the work. The project is the student's and the honesty rules exist to keep it that way.

Transition planned in MYP 5

MYP does not train timed written examinations, and DP and IGCSE are built on them. A short block of timed writing before the programme ends removes most of the first-term shock at the next school.

No district premium, because there is no district

Lessons run live over video on Gulf Standard Time, so the tutor is chosen on MYP experience rather than on willingness to drive to Hor Al Anz. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India.

Rates quoted as the market, not as a boast

Every AED figure on this page is a published market rate attributed to the provider or study that published it. We do not publish statistics about our own outcomes, and we claim no KHDA, IB or Cambridge accreditation, because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hor Al Anz: your questions answered

Does it matter that an MYP tutor is not based in Hor Al Anz?+

For the Middle Years Programme, no. IB students are a minority of the Dubai private sector, the northern districts carry less of that minority than the newer communities, and MYP assessment experience is a narrower specialism than IB Diploma teaching. Widening a search from Hor Al Anz to Deira or Al Qusais adds radius without adding specialists. What changes outcomes is whether the tutor can mark against four published criteria and explain the band above. That is a selection question rather than a geography question, and online delivery removes the distance variable entirely.

How is an MYP grade out of 7 actually calculated?+

Each subject group is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, giving a total out of thirty-two. The school converts that total to a 1 to 7 grade using published boundaries. There is no percentage. The practical consequence is that one weak criterion can hold down an otherwise strong profile, so a student sitting at a 5 may be scoring sevens in three criteria and a three in the fourth. Ask the school for the strand-by-strand breakdown rather than the single grade; it is usually on the reporting portal and it tells you where to work.

What are the four criteria in MYP Sciences?+

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Each is marked out of eight. Inquiring and designing is where most Dubai students lose ground, because the descriptors want a testable question, a hypothesis with scientific reasoning, named independent, dependent and controlled variables, and a method another person could follow. Processing and evaluating wants genuine discussion of error and reliability rather than a sentence saying the experiment worked. Those two criteria are narrow enough to fix in a handful of focused sessions.

Where does a tutor's help with the Personal Project have to stop?+

With the process, yes. A tutor can help set a goal specific enough to be assessed, plan backwards from the school's deadlines, keep the process journal contemporaneous, read the criteria descriptors with the student and ask hard questions at the halfway point where projects usually stall. A tutor cannot write the journal, draft the report, make the product or edit the work to completion. If the tutor is typing, the session has gone wrong. Some operations in this market sell completed assessed work; that is a malpractice risk carried by the student.

Is MYP harder or easier than IGCSE at the same age?+

They are differently difficult, which is why direct comparison frustrates parents. IGCSE is externally examined with public past papers, tiering in several subjects and a clear mark scheme, so preparation is concrete and the ceiling is visible. MYP is criterion-referenced with no external paper for most of the programme, which rewards sustained process work and documented thinking. Strong writers and organised students often do better in MYP; students who perform under timed pressure often do better in IGCSE. Neither is a softer option, and the difference matters most when choosing a school at the end of Year 9.

Will my child struggle moving from MYP into the IB Diploma?+

Usually in one specific way. MYP builds inquiry, documented process and reflection, and it does not build timed written examination technique because almost nothing in the programme is a timed written examination. The gaps that show in DP term one are writing to a clock, command-term discipline, recall without open resources, and answering the question asked rather than the one prepared for. A short block of timed writing under examination conditions during the final MYP terms absorbs most of that, and it is far cheaper than firefighting in Year 12.

What is MYP eAssessment and does my child need it?+

It is the externally validated route at the end of MYP 5, based on on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, and it produces an IB certificate. Schools that do not use it award school-based MYP grades against the same criteria. Day to day the teaching is similar. The route matters most for a family likely to move country or school at sixteen, where external validation travels better than a school report, and for a student who will not hold an IGCSE certificate as evidence at that age. Ask the school's assessment policy which route it uses.

How much should we expect to pay for MYP tutoring in Dubai?+

Published market bands put budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online run AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialist work runs AED 200 to 450 and above. Monthly, Bestimate estimates roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-band for a weekly hour. For MYP, the cheapest band usually teaches content well and cannot mark criteria, which is the gap that matters.

Which MYP subject groups do families in the Deira area ask about most?+

Mathematics and Sciences lead, mostly because of Criterion B in both: investigating a pattern and justifying a general rule in Mathematics, and designing a controlled investigation in Sciences. Language and Literature is next, where students write fluently but never quote precisely and stall in the middle band. Design comes up around folder deadlines, since the documented design cycle carries more marks than the finished artefact. Individuals and Societies appears when a student is retelling events instead of weighing evidence, which the thinking critically criterion does not reward.

Do MYP students in Dubai also have to study Arabic and Islamic Education?+

Yes. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with its requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. The scheduling effect is that an MYP week is fuller than the eight subject groups imply.

What time of day do sessions usually run for students in this part of Dubai?+

It follows the school rather than the postcode. Students at schools inside the Deira grid are often home by mid-afternoon and can take a four o'clock slot. Students bussed to Al Garhoud, Oud Metha or Bur Dubai frequently arrive back nearer five, which pushes a realistic start to six. Families commuting across the Sharjah boundary through Al Nahda prefer later evenings or weekends. Because lessons are online, the slot moves for a mock week or shifts to after Iftar during Ramadan without anyone losing a journey.

Does IB Gram send an MYP tutor to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. All UAE lessons are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time. For MYP this suits the work: the task, the descriptors and the reporting portal are already on a screen, so sharing and annotating a lab report or a Design folder over video is easier than passing a laptop around a table. The published in-home band in Dubai is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to 300 online.

My child is twelve and in MYP 2. Is online tutoring suitable at that age?+

It works, with adjustments. Younger students need shorter sessions, clearer written follow-ups and an expectation that a parent reads the session notes, because a twelve-year-old working alone at a screen drifts faster than a sixteen-year-old does. Sessions at that age run tighter, with one concrete task rather than open-ended discussion, and the tutor sets something short and specific for the week. Families who want to be in earshot usually have the student work in a shared room, which is straightforward with a laptop and headphones.

Does MYP count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

MYP by itself is not an equivalency route; the qualification that matters is what the student holds at eighteen. On the British track the Ministry requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at grade no lower than E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. The Ministry has not published an IB points threshold that we can source, so we do not state one. Verify your own case with the Ministry or the emirate's attestation authority; we describe the process rather than perform it.

How quickly can an MYP grade actually move?+

It depends which criterion is weak. A criterion that fails on a documented behaviour, naming controlled variables, structuring a method, quoting evidence precisely, can move within two or three assessed tasks because the student is not learning new content, only changing what they put on the page. A criterion that fails on knowledge and understanding takes longer, because the content has to be taught. Honest answers here come after one marked task, not before. Nobody can promise a grade, and a provider offering one is telling you something about its standards.

What if no MYP specialist is free for our subject and time slot?+

We say so instead of filling the slot with whoever is available. MYP specialisms are narrow, and an unusual combination, a particular subject group at a particular hour on a particular evening, does occasionally come up empty. The options then are a different time, a different tutor with a proper handover, or a wait with a date attached to it. A mismatched tutor in a criterion-based programme costs a term, because the student keeps producing work the tutor cannot mark against the descriptors.

Bring the criterion breakdown and the next task

If you are weighing an IB MYP tutor in Hor Al Anz against a search in Deira, Al Muteena or Al Qusais, the comparison will keep returning the same answer, because MYP specialists are thin on the ground in every northern district and the format that fixes that is video. The useful first step is to open the school portal, screenshot the criterion breakdown for the subject that worries you, and send it with the next task sheet. The trial lesson works on that task with the descriptors open and ends with a named criterion to target. No payment is taken before it. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we do not offer home visits in the UAE.
