IB Physics Tutor in Hor Al Anz

An IB physics tutor in Hor Al Anz is most often needed for the same reason: the student knows the physics and cannot find the entry point into an unfamiliar question. This page is about method. It names the question archetypes, the two habits that carry mechanics, how a curve is turned into a straight line, and how a marked script is read. Lessons run one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Question archetypes named, with the first move for each one
  • Free-body diagrams and energy accounting drilled as standing habits
  • Graph linearisation taught as a procedure, not as a trick
  • Investigation support coaches the student's own work and writes none of it

IB & IGCSE in Hor Al Anz

Most physics marks are lost in the first thirty seconds of a question

The students we are asked to help in Diploma physics are rarely the ones who do not know the content. They are the ones who read an unfamiliar question, cannot see where to start, write something plausible, and lose marks that had nothing to do with their understanding. That is a method problem. It is diagnosable from a marked script in twenty minutes and it is trainable, and almost nobody teaches it because it does not look like teaching physics.

The method itself is less mysterious than it feels. Diploma physics questions come in a small number of recognisable shapes: a mechanics situation that wants a free-body diagram first, an energy problem that wants an accounting statement, a circuit that wants redrawing before any calculation, a graph that wants linearising, a data set that wants an uncertainty treatment. A student who can classify a question in the first thirty seconds has a first move. A student who cannot is improvising, which is expensive under time pressure.

The second thing we work on is what students write rather than what they know. Method marks exist on multi-step questions even when the final value is wrong, and a student who writes only answers forfeits marks they had already earned. Formula, substitution and result on separate lines, units carried through, significant figures set by the least precise input: these are habits rather than insights, and because they are mechanical they survive examination pressure far better than understanding alone does.

Hor Al Anz is a dense apartment district in Deira, next to Abu Hail and Al Muteena, inland from Al Mamzar, with the Green Line of the Metro running through it. Diploma provision used by families here mostly sits across the Creek or towards Al Mamzar and Festival City, so a physics student from this district usually commutes, often for an hour a day in total. A plan that assumes an empty weekday evening does not survive that, which is why session length and weekend slots are part of the plan rather than scheduling detail.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every lesson here is one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. For physics the screen genuinely helps: a graph can be annotated and rebuilt three times in two minutes, a diagram drawn while the student predicts the next force, and the session recorded so a derivation can be re-watched at the moment it is needed rather than when it was taught.

What follows is the method in detail. If you read one section, read the one on question archetypes, because the first move is where the marks are won and lost.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics enquiries from this district arrive at three stages, and the work is different enough at each that they are effectively different services.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Two years across themes A to E, assessed by written papers plus the scientific investigation. Higher level carries additional material inside each theme rather than in a separate block. Tutoring splits between method, content and experimental reasoning, and which dominates is settled by reading a marked script rather than by assumption.

Higher level physics sets in Dubai schools are often small, so a student stuck on a specific derivation may have nobody in the class working on the same problem. For a commuting student in this district that isolation is harder to resolve informally, which is the most common reason families here look outside the school.

Into DPAges 15-17 · Year 11 into DP 1

IGCSE or MYP into Diploma physics

The transition that generates most first-year work from this area. Three new demands arrive at once: uncertainty arithmetic, literal command terms, and the expectation that a conclusion is argued from data. None is conceptually difficult and all three are unfamiliar, which is why a strong IGCSE grade does not predict a comfortable start.

Students arriving from CBSE or ICSE often bring stronger numerical confidence and less practice at unfamiliar, unsignposted problems, which is exactly what Diploma physics rewards. The bridge for them is problem-solving practice rather than more content.

A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level physics, as the alternative route

Taken instead of the Diploma by many students in the British-curriculum schools this district uses. The content overlaps substantially and the assessment structure and practical arrangements do not. Tell us the board and specification code when you enquire, because the past papers and mark-scheme conventions differ.

Families in Hor Al Anz frequently have one child on each route, which makes comparison inevitable at the kitchen table. The useful point is that both reward the same underlying method: classify the question, draw the diagram, account for the energy, lay out the working.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics arrives with company. These are the subjects most often requested alongside it from this district, and why each pairing matters.

Physics

HL and SL

Themes A to E, written papers and the scientific investigation. Entry-point method, uncertainty handling and laid-out working decide more marks than additional content revision does.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The natural partner. Differentiation, logarithmic graph work and trigonometric manipulation all appear inside physics questions, so a weakness shows up in both subjects at once.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Compatible with physics provided the algebraic fluency gap is closed deliberately, since that fluency is assumed from the first week in physics rather than built.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the uncertainty, graph and significant-figure discipline. One tutor seeing both scripts often finds a single shared cause rather than two problems.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Modelling and algorithmic reasoning transfer into physics problem-solving, and the documentation discipline it teaches helps with the investigation write-up.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Overlaps on materials, forces and testing. The investigative instincts are closely related and the evaluation criteria reward similar honesty about limitations.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Physics supplies strong material on measurement, models and what counts as evidence, which is useful for a student who struggles to find real examples.

Extended Essay in Physics

Core

A supervised research piece needing a narrow, measurable question. A tutor helps narrow it, plan and respond to drafts, and writes none of it.

IGCSE Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

The pre-Diploma route in the British-curriculum schools this district uses. The transferable gain is algebraic fluency and graph confidence.

A Level Physics

AS and A2

The alternative post-16 route, with large content overlap and different assessment structure. The same problem-solving method applies to both.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways we work on physics, all one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, and all designed around a student who commutes.

Method clinics on unfamiliar questions

The highest-return mode for a student whose content is sound. We work exclusively on unfamiliar questions, with the student attempting the first move before anything is explained. The purpose is classification and entry points rather than coverage, and it is deliberately uncomfortable because that is where the skill is built.

  • The student attempts the first move before any explanation
  • Questions chosen for unfamiliarity rather than for topic coverage
  • A running log of which archetypes are not being recognised
  • Working laid out as formula, substitution and result, every time

Theme teaching where content is genuinely missing

For students with a real gap, usually in fields or in nuclear and quantum physics, or in the HL extension of a theme that the class moved past quickly. Sequential and built on a written coverage map, with HL material listed on its own lines so it cannot be skipped by default.

  • A written coverage map across themes A to E
  • HL extensions listed separately and taught explicitly
  • Derivations written out by the student, not copied
  • Short retrieval tasks between sessions rather than long sets

Investigation coaching and weekend paper work

The investigation is coached within firm limits: question narrowing, variable control, uncertainty estimation, evaluation argument, and feedback given as the questions an examiner would ask. Weekend mornings carry whole papers under time, which a commuting student cannot do properly on a weekday evening.

  • Research question narrowed until it is measurable with school apparatus
  • Nothing written, drafted, rewritten or supplied by the tutor
  • Whole papers under timed conditions on weekend mornings
  • Every lost mark categorised and tallied across papers

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hor Al Anz

01

Question archetypes, and the first move for each

Physics questions look endlessly varied and are not. Across a Diploma paper, most questions belong to one of a handful of recognisable types, each with a reliable first move. Teaching a student to classify before calculating is the single most transferable thing a physics tutor can do, because it converts an unfamiliar question from a blank page into a known procedure with a known starting point.

The classification is not subtle once it is named. A situation with several forces acting wants a free-body diagram before anything else. A problem that mentions a height, a spring, a speed and a final state wants an energy accounting statement rather than a sequence of equations. A circuit wants redrawing into a clean series-parallel form before any numbers are touched. A graph with a curve wants linearising. A data table wants an uncertainty treatment and a gradient. A question quoting a very large or very small number wants standard form handled before the physics starts.

What students do instead is pattern-match on the topic name and reach for the formula they associate with it. That works on familiar questions and fails on exactly the unfamiliar ones that distinguish grades. It also wastes time, because an unproductive first move usually has to be abandoned and restarted, and in a timed paper the minutes spent on a false start are the minutes the last question needed.

The table sets out the archetypes with the first move and the usual mistake. We use it as a working document in method clinics: the student reads a question, names the archetype out loud, states the first move, and only then begins. Within a few sessions the naming becomes silent and automatic, which is the point.

PHYSICS QUESTION ARCHETYPES AND THE FIRST MOVE

02

Free-body diagrams and energy accounting: the two habits that carry mechanics

  • Draw the free-body diagram for every mechanics question, not just hard ones
  • Isolate the object, name every force, mark every direction
  • Energy accounting as one written line before the algebra
  • State what was dissipated as well as what transferred
  • Both habits earn method marks before any arithmetic happens

Almost every mechanics mark a Diploma student loses can be traced to one of two omissions. The first is a free-body diagram that was never drawn, or was drawn without labels. A diagram with the forces named, their directions marked and the object isolated turns a confusing situation into a short list of components to resolve. Without it, students resolve from memory and drop a force, usually the one that acts in an unexpected direction.

The habit has to be unconditional to be useful. A student who draws the diagram only when a question looks difficult will not draw it when a question looks easy and turns out not to be, which is where the marks actually go. We insist on it for every mechanics question for a few weeks until it stops being a decision, and the improvement shows up in questions the student would previously have attempted carelessly.

The second habit is energy accounting. When a problem involves a height, a spring, a speed, friction or a temperature change, the productive first line is a statement of what energy was where at the start and where it ended up, including whatever was dissipated. That single line resolves most of these questions and makes the algebra almost incidental. Students instead chain equations and lose track of which quantities are initial and which final, which is why sign errors proliferate in exactly these problems.

Both habits also protect method marks, because both produce written evidence of reasoning before any arithmetic happens. A student whose script shows a labelled diagram and an energy statement has already earned marks even if the final value is wrong, and a student whose script shows only a number has not. That is worth saying to a teenager plainly: the diagram is not preparation for the answer, it is part of the answer.

03

Graph linearisation: turning a curve into a straight line

Linearisation is one of the most reliable sources of marks in Diploma physics and one of the least practised. The principle is simple: a gradient can be read accurately from a straight line and cannot be read accurately from a curve, so when a relationship is not linear the examiner expects the student to choose what to plot against what in order to straighten it. The question usually signals this by asking what should be plotted to produce a straight line, and students who have not practised it answer vaguely.

The procedure is mechanical. Write the relationship. Decide which combination of the variables will produce a linear form. Identify what the gradient and the intercept will represent. Then plot, draw the line, read the gradient from the line rather than from two data points, and quote it with units. Each of those steps carries marks somewhere, and the last one is the one students forget most often: a gradient without units is incomplete.

The cases that recur are limited enough to learn. A relationship with a power wants logarithms on both axes, with the gradient giving the power. A period depending on the square root of a length wants the square of the period against the length. A velocity-squared relationship wants velocity squared against displacement. A lens or resistance reciprocal relationship wants reciprocals plotted. An exponential decay wants a natural logarithm against time. That is most of what appears.

The table lists these with what gets plotted and what the gradient means. In sessions we practise it the other way round as well: given a straight-line graph and its axes, state what relationship it implies. That reverse exercise is what builds genuine confidence, because the examination sometimes asks the question in that direction and students who have only drilled one direction freeze.

COMMON LINEARISATIONS AND WHAT THE GRADIENT MEANS
Relationship formPlot this against thatWhat the gradient givesWhat the intercept gives
A power relationship between two quantitiesLogarithm of one against logarithm of the otherThe power in the relationshipThe logarithm of the constant
A period depending on the square root of a lengthPeriod squared against lengthA constant containing the acceleration due to gravityIdeally zero; a non-zero value signals a systematic error

Exponential decay with timeNatural logarithm of the quantity against timeThe negative decay constantThe logarithm of the initial quantity
Exponential attenuation with distanceNatural logarithm of intensity against distanceThe negative attenuation coefficientThe logarithm of the incident intensity
04

Circuits and fields: the reasoning students skip

  • Redraw every circuit into clean series and parallel groups first
  • Series shares current; parallel shares potential difference
  • Apply that sentence repeatedly rather than recalling formulae
  • In fields, make the reasoning sequence explicit and repeat it
  • HL field material is under-rehearsed for scheduling reasons, not difficulty

Circuit questions are where carelessness is punished most reliably, because the arithmetic is easy and the structure is not. The productive first step is always to redraw the circuit into clean series and parallel groups, labelling what is in common with what. Students who calculate directly from the diagram as drawn apply a series rule inside a parallel branch, which gives a plausible wrong answer that is hard to spot afterwards.

The second circuit habit is tracking what is shared. Components in series share a current; components in parallel share a potential difference. Almost every circuit question is answered by applying that sentence repeatedly to progressively simpler groups. Students who learn circuit rules as a list of formulae rather than as that single principle struggle whenever the arrangement is unfamiliar, which is the arrangement the examination chooses.

Fields is the theme students most often name as the hardest and the reason is partly structural. The material is abstract, it rewards reasoning about an inverse relationship rather than calculating with a formula, and at higher level the extension is substantial and usually taught at the end of the theme when the class is moving on. The result is the most frequently under-rehearsed HL content in the subject, which is an organisational failure rather than an intellectual one.

The way to work on fields is to make the reasoning explicit and repeated. What is the source, what does the field do to a test object, how does the strength vary with distance, what happens to the potential, and what does the graph of each look like. A student who can produce that sequence for gravitational and electric cases has most of the theme, and the derivations become memorable because they sit on a structure rather than floating free.

05

The data booklet, and what is not worth memorising

  • Keep the data booklet open in every session until navigation is automatic
  • Do not memorise what the booklet supplies
  • Do memorise what each symbol means and its standard unit
  • Know which relationships are expected to be derived rather than looked up
  • Significant figures set by the least precise input, checked every time

Candidates are given a data booklet in the physics examination. It contains constants, formulae and reference data in a fixed structure, and a surprising number of students have never practised using it under time pressure. The practical consequence is twofold: they waste revision time memorising what is supplied, and they lose minutes in the examination hunting for what they did not know was there.

The useful discipline is to keep the booklet open in every session from the start of the course, so that navigation becomes automatic. A student who knows which page carries which group of relationships moves faster than one who is searching, and the saved minutes land on the last question of the paper, which is often where the recoverable marks are. This is a small intervention with a direct mark return and it costs nothing.

What does need memorising is different and smaller: which quantities the symbols refer to, the standard unit for each, and the relationships that are not in the booklet because they are expected to be derived or constructed. A student who can read a booklet formula and immediately say what each symbol means and what units it carries is in a strong position. One who recognises the formula and cannot populate it is not, and the distinction is invisible until a question requires it.

The related habit is significant figures. A result is entitled to the precision its least precise input allows, and a student copying ten digits from a display is announcing that they do not know this rule. It takes about two weeks to establish and then holds for the rest of the course, which makes it one of the few genuinely free improvements available. We check it on every numerical answer rather than mentioning it once.

06

How a marked script is read, and how long each fix takes

Our first request is always a marked paper, because it answers a question no conversation can. Physics marks drain away in a limited number of distinct ways, and each has a different repair time. A plan that does not distinguish between them will spend six weeks on something that needed two and two weeks on something that needed six, which is how tutoring money gets wasted without anybody behaving badly.

The categories are specific. Entry-point failure looks like a blank space or an abandoned start on an unfamiliar question. Command-term failure looks like a correct paragraph where a single statement was wanted, or a statement where a reasoning chain was required. Working-not-shown looks like a bare wrong answer on a multi-step question with no method marks awarded. Uncertainty failure looks like a gradient without units, or an uncertainty ignored until the final line. Content failure looks like consistent loss across every question on one theme. Timing failure looks like a strong first half and an empty last page.

Each of those has a different fix and a different timescale, and being honest about the timescale is part of the job. Command terms and working discipline change inside a fortnight. Entry-point method takes four to six sessions of deliberately unfamiliar questions. Uncertainty arithmetic takes four to six sessions. A genuine content gap in a theme takes as long as the theme takes. Timing improves with whole papers under time and nothing else.

The table sets this out as a diagnostic tool. A parent can use it with a marked script in front of them and reach a reasonable view before speaking to anybody, which we think is a better basis for a conversation than a general sense that physics is going badly.

07

The investigation, and the line that does not move

  • Obtain the school's internal deadlines in writing at the start
  • A question that cannot be measured with school apparatus is fatal
  • Plan the uncertainty treatment before collecting data
  • We coach design, analysis and evaluation and write none of it
  • The supervisor at school decides what help is permitted

The scientific investigation carries twenty per cent of the grade under the current guide and is the largest block of marks a physics student controls directly. It is assessed against published criteria and marked internally, with the school setting the deadlines that actually govern a student's term. Those deadlines are the first thing to obtain in writing, because they almost always arrive earlier than families expect and frequently sit close to a mock series.

The most common fatal flaw is a research question that cannot be measured reliably with school apparatus in the time available. An effect too small to detect produces data that supports nothing, and no amount of good writing recovers it. The second is a data set too thin for the analysis then attempted. The third is an evaluation that lists apologies rather than identifying which limitation actually mattered and what would be done about it. All three are planning failures, visible in the first fortnight, and cheap to prevent.

What a tutor may do is narrow and genuinely useful. Teach how a question is made measurable, how variables are identified and controlled, how uncertainty is estimated and propagated, how an analysis is structured, and how an evaluation argues rather than apologises. Read a draft the student wrote and reply with the questions an examiner would ask next. That is teaching and it is what we offer.

What a tutor must never do is write, draft, complete or rewrite any part of the investigation, supply data, or hand over another student's work as a model to adapt. One provider examined for this project advertises completed internal assessments at a published price; buying that is an academic-malpractice trigger under the International Baccalaureate's own rules and the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller. The school supervisor is the authority on what support is permitted in your child's case.

08

A commuting student's week, and the honest limits of what we claim

A Diploma physics student travelling from Hor Al Anz across the Creek or to Al Mamzar loses a real part of the day to the journey. Most are home between 16:00 and 17:00, and after food the usable window starts around 17:30. For a student carrying three higher level subjects, the core and an investigation, that window is contested before any tutoring is added. Sixty focused minutes on a travel day beats ninety that drift, and weekend mornings are the best slot for whole papers because nothing competes and the student is not already tired.

Practically, the student needs a hard surface, squared paper and a ruler for graph work, their own calculator rather than a phone, the data booklet open, and headphones so a busy household is not part of the lesson. The camera is angled at the page, because watching the working appear is the entire diagnostic method in this subject. Where siblings share a room, staggered evenings work and a shared session does not. Ramadan sessions move to the late morning or the post-Iftar window, agreed before the month begins.

On what we are: IB Gram is a tutor-matching platform holding no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education. We operate no office, centre or branch in the UAE, we run no home visits anywhere in the Emirates, we do not enter candidates for examinations and we do not perform Ministry equivalency. Private tutoring here is regulated by the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years; tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no fine schedule is published, treat any quoted amount as unverified.

We also publish no IB examination or results dates, because the International Baccalaureate's own site is the authoritative source and should be checked directly or through your school's IB coordinator. We will say that UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session. We reference and link official documents rather than reproducing them, and we publish no success rates, satisfaction scores or star ratings, because we could not produce the data behind any of them.

Where we tutor

Hor Al Anz and the commute a physics student makes

For a Diploma student here the relevant geography is travel time, because it determines what a weekday evening can hold. These are the areas that set it.

Hor Al Anz East

The immediate neighbour, same apartment profile and same bus timings. For a commuting Diploma student the usable evening starts around 17:30 and is already crowded.

Abu Hail

On the Green Line, giving older students a predictable arrival. That predictability is what allows a weekly physics slot to hold rather than drift.

Al Mamzar

Coastward, with the shortest IB commute available in this district. Students here can sometimes hold a 17:00 session that others cannot.

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

Across the Creek, where some of the nearest Diploma provision sits. The longest daily journey here, and the main argument for weekend sessions.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

Inland along the Metro with a large mostly non-IB cluster. Relevant because many students here are choosing between the Diploma and A Levels at sixteen.

Al Muteena and Al Murar

Dense older Deira blocks where the study table is shared. Squared paper, a ruler and headphones matter more than any software choice.

Oud Metha and Karama

The older school belt across the Creek, with term and mock calendars that differ from the Al Qusais cluster.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Hor Al Anz

Al Mamzar, Festival City and Al Garhoud

Where the Diploma physics teaching reachable from Hor Al Anz mostly happens. Higher level sets here are often small, which is exactly the situation that leaves a student with a specific derivation problem and nobody to work through it with.

  • Universal American School
  • Al Ittihad Private School Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud

Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Oud Metha

The larger nearby cluster, mostly British and Indian curriculum, where IGCSE physics and A Level physics are the common routes. It matters here because the method this page describes applies to those routes as well.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send a marked physics script

Not a description of how it is going. Twenty minutes with a marked paper tells us which of six things is costing the marks and roughly how long each takes to shift. That is the difference between a plan that spends six weeks on something that needed two and one that does not.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on an unfamiliar question

The first session is free and runs on a question the student has not seen, with them attempting the first move before anything is explained. That is where entry-point failure becomes visible. A short written note follows naming the category and the expected timescale, and it is yours whether you book or not.

  3. 03

Ask for the scheme of work and the investigation deadlines

The department's teaching order tells us how to sequence support so we are reinforcing rather than competing. The internal investigation deadlines tell us which weeks are already spoken for. Both are routine requests and both improve the plan more than anything we can do unilaterally.

  4. 04

Place the sessions around the commute

One weekly time in Gulf Standard Time after the journey home, usually 17:30 or later, in sixty-minute blocks rather than ninety. Whole papers and long investigation work move to a weekend morning, which is the most productive slot in the week and the least requested.

  5. 05

Re-mark at week four and change if needed

A second paper sat and marked at week four, with the error tally compared against week one. If the pattern has not moved we change approach or tutor rather than defending either. If the diagnosis turns out to be maths rather than physics, we say so, because a term of physics teaching will not fix an algebra gap.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Method taught before content

Most lost physics marks are entry-point failures on unfamiliar questions rather than knowledge gaps. We work on classification and first moves using deliberately unfamiliar questions, which is uncomfortable and is where the transferable skill actually gets built.

Two habits enforced unconditionally

A labelled free-body diagram for every mechanics question and a written energy accounting line for every energy problem, whether or not the question looks hard. Both produce written evidence of reasoning, which means both earn method marks before any arithmetic happens.

Linearisation taught as a procedure

Write the relationship, choose what to plot, identify what the gradient and intercept represent, read the gradient from the line, quote it with units. We also practise it in reverse, because the examination sometimes asks the question that way and students who drilled one direction freeze.

Repair times stated honestly

Command terms shift in a fortnight. Entry-point method takes four to six sessions. A genuine content gap in a theme takes as long as the theme takes and there is no shortcut. Saying which category a student is in, and how long it takes, is the part most enquiries never get.

Built for a student who commutes

Sixty-minute weekday sessions, work set sized for an evening that started at 17:30, and whole papers moved to weekend mornings. A plan assuming an empty weekday evening does not survive a daily journey out of Deira.

A fixed line on the investigation

We coach the question, the variable control, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation argument, and we write none of it. Feedback arrives as the questions an examiner would ask. The school supervisor remains the authority on permitted support.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hor Al Anz: your questions answered

Our child knows the physics but freezes on unfamiliar questions. Is that fixable?+

Yes, and it is the most common thing we are asked to fix. It is an entry-point problem rather than a knowledge one: the student reads an unfamiliar question, cannot classify it, and either stalls or writes something plausible. Diploma physics questions come in a small number of recognisable shapes, each with a reliable first move, and learning to classify in the first thirty seconds converts a blank page into a known procedure. It takes four to six sessions of deliberately unfamiliar questions, with the student attempting the first move before anything is explained.

Can a physics tutor visit our home in Hor Al Anz?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family address is a service we run only in India. Physics sessions here are one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For this subject the screen is a genuine advantage: a graph can be annotated and rebuilt three times in two minutes, a diagram drawn while the student predicts the next force, and the session recorded so a derivation can be re-watched at the moment it is needed. For a commuting student it also removes a second journey from an evening that already started late.

Why does our child lose marks when the final answer is correct?+

Usually units, significant figures or working that was never written down. A result is entitled to the precision its least precise input allows, so copying ten digits from a display loses marks. A gradient without units is incomplete. And method marks exist on multi-step questions even when the final value is wrong, so a student who writes only answers forfeits marks they had earned and also leaves the examiner nothing to credit when the arithmetic slips. Laying out formula, substitution and result as separate lines fixes most of this within a fortnight.

What is linearisation and why does it come up so often?+

It is choosing what to plot against what so that a non-linear relationship produces a straight line, because a gradient can be read accurately from a line and not from a curve. A power relationship wants logarithms on both axes with the gradient giving the power. A period depending on the square root of a length wants the period squared against the length. An exponential decay wants a natural logarithm against time. Examiners ask it frequently because it tests understanding of the relationship rather than recall, and students who have not practised it answer vaguely.

Why is fields the theme students find hardest?+

Partly because it is genuinely abstract and partly for a scheduling reason. The material rewards reasoning about how a quantity varies with distance rather than substituting into a formula, and at higher level the extension is substantial and is usually taught at the end of the theme as the class moves on. That makes it the most under-rehearsed higher level content in the subject. The remedy is organisational as much as intellectual: list the HL field material separately in the revision plan, and make the reasoning sequence explicit and repeated rather than memorising derivations.

Should our child memorise the physics data booklet?+

No. It is supplied in the examination, so memorising its contents wastes revision time twice over. What does need learning is different: what each symbol refers to, the standard unit for each quantity, and which relationships are expected to be derived rather than looked up. The practical habit is to keep the booklet open in every session from the start of the course so navigation becomes automatic, because minutes saved hunting for a formula land on the last question of the paper, which is often where recoverable marks sit.

How do you decide what to work on first?+

From a marked script, by category. A blank or abandoned start on an unfamiliar question is entry-point failure, which takes four to six sessions. A paragraph where a single statement was wanted is command-term failure, which shifts in two or three. A bare wrong answer with no method credited is a working habit, which takes a fortnight of insistence. A gradient without units is experimental-skills failure. Consistent loss across one theme is a real content gap with no shortcut. An empty last page is timing. Each has a different fix and a different timescale.

Our child came from IGCSE physics and the first Diploma term went badly. Why?+

Three new demands usually arrive together. Uncertainty arithmetic, which IGCSE barely touches and the Diploma expects to be carried through a calculation. Command terms applied literally, where IGCSE was more forgiving about answer length. And the expectation that a conclusion is argued from data rather than stated. None is conceptually difficult and all three are unfamiliar, which is why a strong Extended-tier grade is a poor predictor of a comfortable start. Six to eight focused sessions on those three items closes most of the gap.

Can a tutor help with the physics investigation?+

With the design and the reasoning, yes. A tutor can teach your child how to narrow a research question until it is measurable with school apparatus, how to identify and control variables, how to estimate and propagate uncertainty, how to structure the analysis, and how an evaluation identifies which limitation actually mattered. A tutor can read a draft your child wrote and reply with the questions an examiner would ask next. A tutor must not write, draft, rewrite or supply any part of it, or provide data. The school supervisor sets the rules for permitted support.

How much harder is higher level physics for a student in this district?+

The course covers the same five themes with additional material inside each, so the difference is depth and rehearsal rather than a different syllabus. The local complication is that higher level physics sets in Dubai schools are often small, so a student stuck on a specific derivation may have nobody in the class working on the same problem, and for a commuting student that is harder to resolve informally. That isolation, rather than the difficulty of the material, is the most common reason families in Hor Al Anz look for support outside the school.

Is our child's physics problem actually a maths problem?+

Often, and it is worth establishing early. Rearranging a formula when the unknown sits in the denominator, handling standard form on very large or very small values, logarithmic manipulation for linearisation, and reading a gradient accurately are mathematical skills examined inside a physics paper. When a marked script shows the physics reasoning intact and the algebra collapsing, the honest recommendation is a short block of maths work rather than more physics teaching. We say so when we see it, because selling physics sessions to fix an algebra gap wastes a term.

When should a commuting Diploma student book physics sessions?+

Weekdays from 17:30, in sixty-minute blocks, and weekend mornings for anything long. Students travelling from this district to Diploma schools across the Creek or towards Festival City are usually home between 16:00 and 17:00, and after food the usable window starts later than parents expect. Sixty focused minutes on a travel day is more productive than ninety drifting ones. Weekend mornings are the best slot for whole papers under time and long investigation work, and they are consistently the least requested slot we offer.

Do you teach A Level physics as well as the Diploma?+

Yes, and it matters in this district because many families have one child on each route. The content overlaps substantially: the same algebraic fluency, the same graph and uncertainty discipline, the same problem-solving method of classifying a question and drawing the diagram before calculating. What differs is the assessment structure, the practical arrangements and the mark-scheme conventions. Tell us the board and specification code when you enquire, because past papers do not transfer between boards and revising on the wrong set wastes real time.

What does IB physics tutoring cost for a family in Deira?+

Published Dubai market rates put a qualified subject tutor working online at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with IB specialists quoted from about AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour because the journey sits inside the fee. Monthly estimates from the Bestimate Dubai table run about AED 600 to 1,200 for mid-band weekly support and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more in an examination year. Those are market figures with sources rather than our price list; we quote after the free trial lesson.

Send one marked script and we will name the category

Physics grades move when somebody identifies which of six things is costing the marks: entry-point method, command terms, working not shown, experimental skills, a real content gap, or time. Each has a different fix and a different timescale, and the diagnosis takes one marked script and twenty minutes. Send us a recent paper with the marks on it, your child's level and the school, and we will tell you the category and how long it realistically takes to shift, including when the answer is a short block rather than a term. The trial lesson is free and runs on a question the student has not seen. Everything is one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
