IGCSE Science Tutor in Hor Al Anz

An IGCSE science tutor in Hor Al Anz is usually hired for one of three reasons: a Chemistry mock that came back a grade below target, a Physics paper where the calculation method was right and the units were not, or a Biology answer that described when the command term said explain. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, so a student in Hor Al Anz works through the same past paper on a shared screen with a specialist who teaches that syllabus code every week.

  • Cambridge 0620, 0625, 0610 and 0654 taught by syllabus code
  • Pearson Edexcel 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 covered on the same basis
  • Paper 6 and Alternative to Practical drilled on real question stems

IB & IGCSE in Hor Al Anz

What "science" means on an IGCSE timetable, and why it changes the tutoring

Parents in Hor Al Anz ask for a science tutor. Cambridge and Pearson do not sell science. They sell Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate qualifications with separate syllabus codes, separate papers and separate mark schemes, plus a Coordinated Sciences route that compresses all three into two grades. The first job of an IGCSE science tutor in Hor Al Anz is therefore to establish which of those a student is actually sitting, because the revision plan for Cambridge Coordinated Sciences 0654 shares maybe half its content with the plan for three separate Cambridge sciences, and almost none of its paper structure.

Schools in the Deira belt split both ways. Some enter the whole cohort for Coordinated Sciences 0654 and use the spare curriculum time for a sixth or seventh subject. Others run three separate sciences for the students aiming at IB Diploma HL or A Level, and Coordinated for the rest. A student can also sit two separate sciences and drop the third. Until you know which, a tutor cannot tell you whether electromagnetic induction is on the paper or whether it was trimmed out of the Coordinated subset.

The second thing that changes the tutoring is tier. Cambridge IGCSE sciences are tiered: Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3 and can reach grade C at best; Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4 and the grade ceiling opens to A*. A student put on Core in Year 10 because a baseline test went badly will carry that ceiling into results day unless somebody notices and the school agrees to move them. That decision has a deadline attached to it, and the deadline sits with the exams officer, not with the parent.

Then there is the practical. UAE candidates in a school centre sit Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, in almost every case. It is a written paper about practical work: reading a thermometer scale drawn at an angle, spotting why a result is anomalous, suggesting a control variable, naming a hazard and a sensible precaution. It is marked on laboratory thinking, not on laboratory manual dexterity, which is exactly why it can be taught over live video with a shared screen and a scanned question paper.

What an online IGCSE science tuition Dubai session looks like in practice is narrow. A tutor picks one paper, one question cluster and one error pattern, works it with the student in real time, then sets a short piece of timed work for the next session. Three subjects and four papers is far too much ground to cover generally; the only version of this that moves a grade is the version that names the topic and the paper every single week.

At a glance

  • Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 each carry four papers plus Paper 6
  • Coordinated Sciences 0654 awards two grades from a compressed three-science subset
  • Core and Extended tier decide the grade ceiling before the student enters the hall
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences (4PH1, 4CH1, 4BI1) are untiered and sat in May/June and November
  • Paper 6 is a written paper about practical work, not a laboratory assessment
  • UAE centres sit the June and November Cambridge series; the February/March series is offered to India only
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A science tutor working with a Hor Al Anz family needs to know where the student sits in the wider school structure, because the IGCSE science grade is the gatekeeper for everything above it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE

The two-year qualification most British-curriculum schools in Dubai use at 16. Cambridge sciences are tiered into Core and Extended; Pearson International GCSE sciences are untiered with one paper set for all candidates. Grades run 9 to 1 on Pearson and A* to G on most Cambridge science syllabuses, which is why a Hor Al Anz parent comparing two siblings' reports can be looking at two different scales for the same subject.

In Dubai, IGCSE sits under KHDA oversight at school level while the qualification itself is awarded by Cambridge or Pearson in the UK. KHDA inspects the school; the board sets the paper. A Deira school's inspection band tells you something about teaching quality across the building and nothing about whether a particular Year 11 science set is on track for the grade it needs.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The IB alternative at the same age, assessed on four criteria rather than papers: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, reflecting on the impacts of science. Students moving from MYP sciences into an IGCSE science set mid-course find the content familiar and the assessment alien, because nothing in MYP trains a student to answer a four-mark structured question in ninety seconds.

Several Dubai schools within reach of Hor Al Anz run MYP to Year 9 then switch to IGCSE, or run both tracks in parallel. Families who transfer across the city mid-year often cross that boundary without being told it exists. The gap shows up first in Paper 2 technique and in the habit of writing paragraphs where the mark scheme wants three short labelled points.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Sciences

Where strong IGCSE science students go next in Dubai if they do not choose A Level. DP Chemistry HL assumes fluency with moles and ionic equations from day one; DP Physics HL assumes algebraic rearrangement that IGCSE Core never demanded. The internal assessment is a single scientific investigation written by the student and marked against published criteria.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, which widens DP capacity for students currently in Year 10 and 11 across the older districts. A student who wants Chemistry HL two years from now needs the Extended tier now, because the Core subset omits content the HL course treats as assumed knowledge.

AS/A2Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

International A Level Sciences

The other post-16 science route, modular at AS and A2 and examined in the same June and November windows as IGCSE. A Level Physics builds directly on the IGCSE Extended treatment of forces, fields and electricity; students arriving from the Core subset meet three topics in term one they have never formally studied.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3 or better. Science grades count toward that five. Arabic and Islamic Education do not count toward it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the science subjects and sub-topics Hor Al Anz families most often ask about by name, with the specific place marks are lost rather than a general description of the course.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Marks drain out of three places: unit conversion in moment and pressure calculations, ray diagrams where the normal is not drawn, and electricity questions where series and parallel are read the wrong way round. Extended Paper 4 rewards a student who writes the formula, substitutes, then evaluates, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and ionic equations carry the Extended grade. The single most common avoidable loss is an unbalanced equation in a question that then asks for a calculation from it, because every downstream mark depends on the coefficients. Organic nomenclature and the homologous series are high-yield and quick to fix.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Biology looks like the memorisable one and marks are lost on command terms instead. Describe wants what happened; explain wants why; suggest wants an applied answer to an unfamiliar context. Transport in plants, enzymes and the kidney produce the most mark-scheme mismatches in Extended Paper 4.

Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654

Double award, two grades

A compressed subset of all three sciences awarding two identical grades. The risk is revising from a single-science textbook and spending hours on content the Coordinated subset excludes. A tutor's first task here is a syllabus audit against the school's entry code, before any teaching happens.

Paper 6: Alternative to Practical

Both tiers, all three sciences

Graph plotting with a correctly chosen scale, identifying an anomalous result, naming a control variable, improving a method, and stating a hazard with a matched precaution. It is predictable to the point of being drillable, and it is the paper most students have practised least.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1

Untiered, Papers 1 and 2

No tiering, so one paper set covers the full grade range, and the formula sheet convention differs from Cambridge. Students who move school mid-course sometimes revise the wrong board's required-practical list for a term before anyone catches it.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1

Untiered, Papers 1 and 2

Content overlaps heavily with Cambridge 0620 but the question style is longer-stemmed and more data-led. Titration arithmetic and the reactivity series appear in forms a Cambridge-trained student finds unfamiliar in wording rather than in substance.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1

Untiered, Papers 1 and 2

Heavier on experimental interpretation than its Cambridge counterpart, with extended-response questions that need structured paragraphs. The genetics and ecology sections are where students who learned from Cambridge resources find the gaps.

Combined Science and Double Award routes

Varies by school entry

Different schools in the Deira belt use different names for similar things. Checking the entry code on the statement of entry is the only reliable way to know what a student is sitting, and it is a two-minute job that prevents a term of misdirected revision.

Maths support alongside science

IGCSE Core and Extended

A large share of lost Physics marks are maths marks: standard form, rearranging an equation with the subject on the bottom, reading a gradient off a line of best fit. Fixing those inside the science session is usually faster than a separate maths course.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every science request from this part of Dubai. All of them run live over video; none of them involve a tutor travelling to an address in the UAE.

Weekly one-to-one by subject and paper

One sixty-minute session a week on a single named science, planned around the paper the student is weakest on. The tutor shares a scanned past paper, the student works the question live, and the tutor marks it against the real mark scheme while the student watches. That last part is the bit a worksheet cannot do.

  • One science per session, named in advance
  • Past-paper question worked live on a shared screen
  • Marked against the published mark scheme in the session
  • Short timed task set for the following week

Triple-science block for separate entries

Students sitting Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three qualifications need three plans. A block of two or three sessions a week, rotating subjects, keeps all three moving in the run-up to a series without a student spending four weeks on Chemistry while Physics quietly slides. Rotation is set by mock marks, not by preference.

  • Separate plan per syllabus code
  • Rotation weighted towards the weakest paper
  • Shared notes so all three tutors see the same mock data
  • Reviewed every four weeks against timed-paper scores

Paper 6 and practical-skills intensive

A short focused block on the Alternative to Practical paper alone, which most students have practised least and which is the most predictable paper on the timetable. Graph plotting, anomalous results, control variables, method improvements and hazard-precaution pairs, drilled across all three sciences in sequence.

  • Scale selection and plotting drilled to mark-scheme standard
  • Anomaly identification and explanation practised on real data sets
  • Hazard and matched precaution phrasing rehearsed
  • Works for Cambridge Paper 6 and Edexcel practical-based questions

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hor Al Anz

01

What a Hor Al Anz parent is actually buying when they search for a science tutor

  • Content gap: marks lost evenly across topics, needs sequential reteaching
  • Technique gap: recall fine, structured questions weak, fixable in weeks
  • Tier cap: every paper capped at C, needs a school-level entry decision
  • Diagnosis needs one marked mock paper, not a general conversation

A search for an IGCSE science tutor in Hor Al Anz is a search for one of three different services, and getting the wrong one wastes a term. The first is remediation: the student has gaps from Year 9 or from a school transfer and needs content taught properly for the first time. The second is technique: the content is there, the mock mark is not, and the problem is command terms, paper timing and method presentation. The third is tier management: the student is on Core and needs to be on Extended, or is on Extended and is drowning.

These need different tutors and different session shapes. Remediation is slow and sequential and needs a tutor willing to go back two years. Technique work is fast, paper-driven and can move a grade in six to eight weeks because nothing new is being learned. Tier management is mostly a conversation with the school's exams officer, and the useful thing a tutor does is produce evidence from timed papers that makes the case one way or the other.

Diagnosing which one applies takes a marked mock paper and about forty minutes. A student losing marks evenly across every topic has a content problem. A student scoring well on recall questions and badly on four-and-five-mark structured questions has a technique problem. A student capped at grade C on every paper they sit is on the Core tier and no amount of tutoring changes the ceiling. That diagnosis is what the free trial lesson is for, and it should happen before anybody buys a block of sessions.

The honest version of this is that the third case is the most urgent and the least often spotted. A Core entry made in Year 10 on the basis of one baseline test follows a student to results day. If the IB Diploma or an A Level science is the plan, a grade C ceiling closes that door, and the window to change the entry closes months before the exam.

02

The syllabus codes behind the word "science", and why the code matters more than the subject name

Every IGCSE science question paper is tied to a numbered syllabus. The number is printed on the statement of entry the school issues, and it is the single most useful piece of information a parent can bring to a first tutoring session. Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625, IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and IGCSE Biology 0610 are the three separate sciences. Coordinated Sciences 0654 is the double award. Pearson Edexcel runs 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 for the same three subjects with a different paper structure and no tiering.

The practical consequence is that two students in the same Hor Al Anz building, both described by their parents as doing IGCSE science, can have almost nothing in common in their revision. One is revising four papers across three subjects with a tiered grade ceiling. The other is revising two papers for a double award that excludes several topics the first student must know. Buying generic science tutoring for either one produces a tutor teaching to the wrong specification.

Board differences are smaller in content than in presentation, and presentation is where marks live. Cambridge supplies a formula sheet with a particular set of relationships; Pearson supplies a different one. Cambridge Extended Paper 4 is structured, multi-part and tightly marked; Pearson's untiered papers run longer stems with more data interpretation. A student who switched schools between Year 10 and Year 11 may have been taught one and entered for the other, and the first time anyone notices is a mock where the paper looks unfamiliar.

The fix is clerical and takes ten minutes. Find the statement of entry, read the syllabus codes, and tell the tutor. Everything downstream, from which past papers to use to which topics to ignore, follows from those four digits.

Where IGCSE science marks are actually lost, paper by paper

Mark schemes are published, which means the places students lose marks are knowable rather than mysterious. Across the three Cambridge sciences the pattern is consistent enough to plan against. On multiple-choice Paper 1 and Paper 2, losses cluster on questions with a negative in the stem and on questions where two options are both defensible and one is more precise. The fix is slow reading, not more content.

On the theory Papers 3 and 4, the dominant loss is command-term mismatch. A question that says state wants a short factual answer and gives no credit for explanation. A question that says explain gives no credit for a description. A question that says suggest expects the student to apply known science to an unfamiliar situation and accepts several answers. Students who write more than the question asks lose time and gain nothing; students who write less than it asks lose marks they knew the content for.

Physics adds a numerical layer. Method marks are awarded for the correct relationship and correct substitution even when the final number is wrong, which means a student who writes nothing but an answer loses everything on an arithmetic slip. Writing the formula, substituting, then stating the answer with a unit is worth training as a reflex, because it converts a zero into two marks several times a paper.

Chemistry's single biggest avoidable loss is an unbalanced equation feeding a calculation. Biology's is the enzyme, transport and excretion cluster, where students reproduce a memorised paragraph instead of answering the specific question asked. Both are diagnosable from one marked past paper and both respond quickly to targeted work.

Core or Extended: the decision that sets the grade ceiling

  • Core grade ceiling is C; Extended reaches A*
  • Extended syllabus contains content Core students are never taught
  • Schools move students on timed-paper evidence, not on request
  • Entry deadlines sit months before the exam window

The Core and Extended tier choice in Cambridge sciences is the most consequential decision in a student's IGCSE science career and it is often made by someone the family never speaks to. Core candidates sit the easier paper pair and the maximum grade available is C. Extended candidates sit the harder pair and can reach A*. The content differs too: the Extended syllabus includes material simply absent from Core, so a Core student has not merely been assessed more gently, they have not been taught several topics.

The case for Core is real. A student who would score poorly across the whole Extended paper can come out with a secure C on Core rather than an insecure E on Extended, and for a student heading to a vocational route or a subject where science is not a prerequisite, that is a sensible trade. The case against is equally real: a C ceiling closes IB Diploma HL sciences and most A Level science options, and the student usually does not understand that at the time.

What makes this a tutoring question rather than a school question is evidence. A school moves a student between tiers on the strength of timed-paper performance, not on a parent's request. Six weeks of Extended past papers under timed conditions, marked honestly, produces exactly the evidence a head of science needs to see. If the papers say Extended is viable, the conversation becomes easy. If they say it is not, the family has made an informed decision instead of a hopeful one.

Timing matters because entries are submitted months before the exam window and the school's internal deadline sits earlier still. A tier conversation started in the spring term of Year 11 is usually too late for the next series. Started early in Year 11, it is straightforward. Parents in Hor Al Anz whose children are currently in Year 10 have the most room to act.

05

Paper 6 and the practical question: how experimental skills are examined without a laboratory

The question every parent asks about online science tutoring is the practical one. If lessons happen over video, how does a student prepare for the practical? The answer is that for almost every UAE candidate in a school centre, the practical is already a written paper. Cambridge offers a practical test option, but the Alternative to Practical paper is what the overwhelming majority of international centres enter candidates for, and it tests reasoning about experiments rather than the performance of them.

What that paper actually asks is narrow and repetitive across series. Read a measuring instrument shown in a diagram, sometimes deliberately drawn at an awkward angle. Record results in a table with correct headings and units. Choose a sensible scale and plot points accurately. Draw a line or curve of best fit. Identify an anomalous result and say why it is anomalous. Name the independent, dependent and control variables. Suggest one improvement to the method and explain why it helps. State a hazard and give a precaution that actually addresses it.

Every one of those is drillable on a shared screen, and most are better drilled that way than in a busy school laboratory, because the tutor can mark a plotted graph point by point against the mark scheme while the student watches. Students lose marks on this paper for small, repeatable reasons: a scale that uses awkward intervals, a line of best fit drawn through the anomaly, a precaution that is really just a restatement of the hazard.

The practical work a student does at school still matters for understanding. But the marks come from the written paper, and the written paper rewards a student who has practised the specific question types rather than one who has handled the most apparatus. That is the honest reason online delivery does not disadvantage a science candidate here.

06

The exam calendar counted backwards from the June series

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series. UAE candidates sit those two. The February/March series exists but Cambridge offers it to India only, so a Dubai parent reading a revision schedule built around a spring sitting is reading a plan for a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November each year.

Counting backwards from the June series is how a tutoring plan gets built. The school's internal entry deadline comes first and is usually set weeks before the board's own final-entry date, because the exams officer has to collate a whole cohort. Then mocks, typically in the winter term. Then the specification-coverage checkpoint, where any topic not yet taught becomes a known risk. Then the timed-paper phase, which is where most of the grade movement happens. Then the exam window itself, then results.

Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a separate timetable per zone. Cambridge states plainly that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. For a Dubai family, that means the timetable to trust is the one the school's exams officer issues, not one found through a search.

Pearson's published dates give a useful illustration of how long the tail is. Its November 2026 International GCSE final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November results have historically reached students in January; November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026. Always open the live official timetable rather than relying on a restated date, because provisional timetables are revised.

What science tutoring costs around Hor Al Anz, read as a monthly figure

Most published tutoring prices in Dubai are hourly, which is the least useful way for a family to think about them. A parent is deciding whether to add a recurring line to the household budget, so the number that matters is the monthly one. Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate work puts weekly one-hour sessions at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle band, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are market figures, not IB Gram's price list.

The hourly bands behind them are published by the providers themselves. EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52, which is the university-student and group-adjacent end of the market. Unitors publishes IGCSE tutoring from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. TutorChase lists around AED 270 for specialist work, and Bestimate's specialist band runs AED 200 to 450 and above. BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. Monthly packages circulating in the market include roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions.

Three separate sciences changes the arithmetic in a way single-subject pricing hides. A triple-science student in Year 11 needing weekly support in all three is buying three sessions a week, not one. At mid-band market rates that is a materially different monthly commitment from one maths session, and it is the point at which families usually decide to prioritise the two weakest sciences rather than cover all three thinly.

What a parent can verify before paying anything: the hourly figure, whether it is per sixty minutes or per lesson of some other length, whether VAT is included in the quoted number, what happens to a cancelled session, and whether a trial lesson exists and on what condition. Those five questions catch most of the surprises, and a provider who will not answer them in writing has told you something useful.

Online rather than in-home, and the plain statement of what IB Gram sells

A family in Hor Al Anz searching for a science tutor often pictures someone at the dining table. That model exists in Dubai and the published in-home band is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to 300 for a comparably qualified tutor working online. The gap is not a quality premium. It is the cost of a round trip across the city and the dead time inside it.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will arrive at an address in Dubai. Every UAE lesson is delivered one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared screen for the paper and the mark scheme. Saying that plainly is more useful to a parent than discovering it after a booking.

The argument for online delivery on a science page is specific rather than general. A Hor Al Anz family hiring locally is choosing from the specialists who will travel to Hor Al Anz on a Tuesday at five. A family hiring online is choosing from specialists who teach Cambridge 0620 Extended every week, regardless of where they live. For a student who needs mole calculations rather than science in the abstract, that difference is the whole point.

There is also a practical gain that matters in this part of Dubai. A video session can start fifteen minutes after the school bus arrives, can move to a later slot during Ramadan without renegotiating a driver's route, and can be rescheduled for a mock week without anyone writing off a journey. Across the older northern districts, where traffic on Abu Hail Road and the Ittihad corridor is at its worst exactly at tutoring o'clock, that flexibility is worth more than it sounds.

Academic honesty: what a science tutor may and may not do with assessed work

IGCSE sciences carry less assessed coursework than the IB Diploma, but the boundary still matters, and it matters more as a student moves upward into DP or A Level investigations. The rule a serious tutor works to is simple: the student produces the work, the tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on it. A tutor who hands back a corrected version in their own words has not helped; they have substituted their judgement for the student's and created an honesty problem.

In practice this means a tutor can explain why an experimental method has a flaw, can ask what the student thinks the control variable should be, can mark a practice answer against the published mark scheme, and can show a worked example of a similar question. A tutor should not write a student's answer for them, should not edit a piece of assessed work to completion, and should not supply a model answer to be submitted.

This matters commercially as well as ethically, because the UAE search results for IB and IGCSE support include operations that sell completed Internal Assessments outright. One competitor page found in this market lists finished IAs at a fixed price. For an IB student that is a malpractice trigger with consequences that follow the student, not the seller. A family evaluating any tutoring provider is entitled to ask directly what the provider will and will not produce, and to walk away from a vague answer.

The adjacent boundary is copyright. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB. A tutor should reference and link them at their official source rather than distributing copies, and a provider offering a downloadable library of board materials is telling you about its standards.

A science-focused revision plan built for a Hor Al Anz student has to fit around subjects that exist in Dubai and nowhere else on a Cambridge timetable. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and its requirements were set to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. These are not optional add-ons a family can deprioritise during exam term.

KHDA also sets how they are organised. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, and schools may vary lesson length so long as the weekly total is met.

For tutoring planning the consequence is arithmetic. A Year 11 student in a Dubai school carries these subjects on top of a full IGCSE science load, which means the hours available for Physics, Chemistry and Biology revision are fewer than the same student would have in a UK school. Any plan that assumes a UK timetable will overcommit the student by several hours a week.

It also means a family sometimes needs Arabic support alongside science rather than instead of it, particularly for a non-Arab student who arrived in Dubai mid-school and is now several years behind the stream they were placed in. That is a separate conversation from the science one, and worth having separately rather than folding into a science session.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Hor Al Anz

Hor Al Anz sits inside the older northern grid of Dubai, where school catchments overlap heavily and families routinely drive across two or three districts for the school they want. These are the neighbourhoods whose students share the same science sets.

Hor Al Anz and Hor Al Anz East

Dense low-rise residential either side of Abu Hail Road, heavily Indian, Pakistani and Arab expatriate. Students are spread across British, Indian and Ministry-curriculum schools, so one street can contain three different exam boards sitting science in the same month.

Deira

The oldest school stock in the city and the shortest journeys. Several Cambridge centres sit within a ten-minute drive, which matters less for online lessons than it does for the 3.15pm pickup that decides whether a 4pm or 5pm slot is realistic.

Al Muteena

Immediately west of Hor Al Anz and feeding many of the same schools. Apartment living means session timing is often set by a shared study space and a sibling's homework slot rather than by traffic.

Al Mamzar

Closer to the Sharjah boundary, so a share of students here attend Sharjah-side schools regulated by SPEA rather than KHDA. The qualification is identical; the inspection regime and the school calendar are not.

Al Qusais

A large cluster of Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum schools together. Families here often have one child on CBSE and one on IGCSE, which makes the science vocabulary at the kitchen table genuinely inconsistent.

Al Nahda

Straddles the emirate border, with a heavy Sharjah commute in both directions. Evening sessions after 6pm are common because the school run back across the border is unpredictable in term time.

Al Garhoud and Oud Metha

Where several of the area's larger international schools sit, including IB and British-curriculum centres. Students from Hor Al Anz bussed into these schools get home late, which pushes science sessions towards 6pm or the weekend.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Hor Al Anz

Hor Al Anz, Al Muteena and the Deira grid

The nearest cluster of British and Indian-curriculum secondaries, most entering candidates for Cambridge IGCSE sciences. Students we support come from schools in this group; their science entry codes differ, so we check the statement of entry rather than assuming.

  • The Westminster School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Al Diyafah High School
  • GEMS Our Own English High School Dubai
  • Deira Private School
  • New Indian Model School Dubai

Al Garhoud, Oud Metha and Bur Dubai

The larger international schools a short drive south, including IB Diploma centres. These are the schools Hor Al Anz families most often transfer into for Years 10 and 11 when they want three separate sciences rather than a Coordinated entry.

  • Deira International School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • The Indian High School Dubai

Schools are named to describe the local education landscape around Hor Al Anz. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the syllabus codes and a marked mock

The useful first message names the school, the year group and the syllabus codes from the statement of entry, and attaches a photograph of a marked mock paper. That is enough to tell whether the problem is content, technique or tier, and it saves a session of general questions.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a diagnosis

The trial is a working session on a real past-paper question, not a sales call. The tutor marks live against the published scheme and says plainly which of the three problem types they are looking at and roughly how long it takes to shift. No payment is taken before this happens.

  3. 03

Agree the paper order and the weekly slot

One science per session, named in advance, in an order set by mock marks rather than by what the student enjoys. The slot is fixed to the school run and adjusted for Ramadan or a mock week rather than abandoned, because a moved session is easier to recover than a cancelled habit.

  4. 04

    Timed papers from week one

Short timed tasks between sessions, full papers as the series approaches, every piece marked against the real scheme. Mark-scheme marking is the measurement; a student who feels more confident but scores the same has not improved yet, and the papers say so before results day does.

  5. 05

Review against the calendar, not the calendar month

Every four weeks the plan is checked against how far the series is away and what the timed papers show. Topics still uncovered become named risks. If a tier conversation with the school is needed, the paper evidence is already assembled by then.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught by syllabus code, not by subject name

A tutor who knows they are teaching Cambridge 0620 Extended rather than chemistry generally can tell a student which topics are off the paper. That saves hours, and it is the first question we ask rather than the last.

Mark schemes used in the session

Work is marked against the published scheme while the student watches, so they see where a four-mark answer earned two. Feeling clearer and scoring higher are different things, and only one of them appears on results day.

Paper 6 treated as a paper, not an afterthought

The Alternative to Practical paper is predictable and most students arrive having practised it least. Drilling scale choice, anomaly explanation and hazard-precaution pairs is some of the cheapest grade movement available in IGCSE science.

Honest about the tier ceiling

If a student is on Core and aiming at an HL science, we say so early and produce the timed-paper evidence a head of science needs. Tutoring cannot lift a Core entry past grade C, and pretending otherwise costs a family a year.

Online delivery stated up front

Every UAE lesson runs live over video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE, and a family learns that on this page rather than after booking. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

Figures attributed, not asserted

Every AED band on this page is a market rate published by a named provider or rate study, cited as such. We do not publish invented statistics about our own results, and we do not claim accreditation from KHDA, Cambridge or Pearson, because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hor Al Anz: your questions answered

Which IGCSE science syllabus is my child in Hor Al Anz actually sitting?+

Read the statement of entry the school issues. It carries the syllabus code, and the code settles everything: Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 are three separate qualifications, while Coordinated Sciences 0654 awards two grades from a compressed subset of all three. Pearson Edexcel runs 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 with no tiering. Two students on the same street can be revising entirely different content under the word science. Bring the codes to the first session; a tutor working from the wrong specification will teach topics that are not on the paper and skip ones that are.

What does the Core and Extended tier mean for my child's final science grade?+

On Cambridge sciences, Core candidates sit the easier paper pair and the highest grade available is C. Extended candidates sit the harder pair and can reach A*. The Extended syllabus also contains content Core students are never taught, so the difference is not only in marking severity. A Core entry closes IB Diploma HL sciences and most A Level science routes. Schools move students between tiers on timed-paper evidence rather than on request, so if the tier looks wrong, start collecting marked Extended papers early in Year 11 rather than in the final term.

How is the practical examined if science lessons are taught over video?+

Most UAE school centres enter candidates for Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, which is a written paper about experimental work rather than a laboratory assessment. It asks the student to read an instrument from a diagram, tabulate results with units, choose a scale and plot accurately, identify and explain an anomalous result, name control variables, improve a method and pair a hazard with a real precaution. Every one of those is drillable on a shared screen, and marking a plotted graph point by point against the scheme is easier online than across a laboratory bench.

When do UAE students sit Cambridge IGCSE science exams?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE centres sit those two. The February/March series exists but Cambridge offers it to India only, so any revision plan built around a spring sitting belongs to a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a timetable per zone, stating that using the correct zone timetable is essential, so the dates to trust are the ones your school's exams officer issues.

My child is doing triple science and is behind in all three. Where do we start?+

Start with the marked mocks and rank the three by how far each is from its target, then weight sessions towards the two furthest behind rather than covering all three thinly. Three separate sciences means three plans, three sets of past papers and three mark schemes, and a single weekly session rotating between them moves nothing. Most families in this position pick two subjects for weekly work and bring the third in for a short block before the series. Covering everything equally is the most common way a term of tutoring produces no grade movement.

How much does IGCSE science tutoring cost around Deira and Hor Al Anz?+

Published market figures give the range. Bestimate's Dubai rate work puts a weekly one-hour session at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Hourly, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65, Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150, TutorChase around AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 for premium tutors. Those are the providers' own published figures, not ours. Ask any provider whether the rate is per sixty minutes and whether VAT is included.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to our home in Hor Al Anz?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one, live over video, on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and mark scheme shared on screen. The published in-home market band in Dubai runs AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel against AED 150 to 300 for a comparably qualified tutor online, and the gap mostly buys a round trip rather than better teaching. Online also means choosing a specialist in your child's syllabus code rather than whoever travels to the district.

Can a tutor help with a science investigation my child has to submit?+

A tutor can teach the underlying science, question the experimental design, point out where a method is uncontrolled, explain what the published criteria reward and mark practice work against them. A tutor cannot write the investigation, edit it to completion or supply a model answer for submission. The work has to be the student's own. This boundary matters because some providers in this market sell completed Internal Assessments outright, and for a student that is a malpractice risk with consequences that follow them rather than the seller.

Which science topics cost Hor Al Anz students the most marks?+

In Chemistry 0620, unbalanced equations feeding a calculation, because every downstream mark depends on the coefficients, plus mole arithmetic and organic naming. In Physics 0625, unit conversion in pressure and moment questions, ray diagrams drawn without the normal, and series-versus-parallel misreading. In Biology 0610, command-term mismatch in the enzyme, transport and excretion cluster, where students reproduce a memorised paragraph instead of answering what was asked. All three are diagnosable from one marked past paper and all three respond to targeted work faster than general revision does.

Is there a difference between Cambridge and Edexcel for IGCSE science?+

The content overlaps heavily; the structure does not. Cambridge sciences are tiered into Core and Extended with four papers plus Paper 6, and grade on an A* to G scale on most science syllabuses. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, use two papers and grade 9 to 1, with longer question stems and more data interpretation. The supplied formula conventions also differ. A student who changed school mid-course may have been taught one and entered for the other, which usually surfaces at a mock where the paper simply looks unfamiliar.

My child's school report says the KHDA rating is good. Does that tell me about the science teaching?+

Only indirectly. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak and the judgement covers the whole school across many measures. It is a useful signal about the building and close to useless as a prediction for one Year 11 science set. The thing that predicts a science grade is a marked timed paper. If you want to know whether your child is on track for a 7 or a grade A, look at what they score on a full past paper under exam conditions, not at an inspection band.

What time can a science session realistically start for a student in Hor Al Anz?+

It depends on the school rather than the neighbourhood. Students at schools inside the Deira grid are often home by around half past three and can take a four o'clock slot. Students bussed to Al Garhoud, Oud Metha or across to Bur Dubai frequently arrive back nearer five, which pushes a realistic start to six. Families with a Sharjah-side commute through Al Nahda or Al Mamzar tend to prefer later evening or weekend slots. Because lessons are online, the slot can move for a mock week or shift after Iftar during Ramadan without losing a journey.

Do we still need five IGCSE subjects for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track, the Ministry requires a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. Science grades count towards the five. One competitor page in this market publishes a six-subject figure, which is wrong. Verify your own case with the Ministry or the emirate's attestation authority; we describe the process and do not perform it.

Is it too late to start science tutoring eight weeks before the exams?+

It depends which problem you have. Eight weeks is enough for technique work, because nothing new is being learned: command-term discipline, writing the formula before the answer, Paper 6 drills and two timed papers a week per subject can move a grade when the content is broadly there. Eight weeks is not enough to reteach two years of missing content across three sciences, and a tutor who says otherwise is selling. The honest plan at that distance is to triage: pick the subject closest to a grade boundary and spend the hours there.

Can one tutor cover Physics, Chemistry and Biology for the same student?+

Some can and most should not. A tutor with a physical-sciences background can usually handle Physics and Chemistry to IGCSE Extended standard; Biology is a different vocabulary and a different style of marking. For Coordinated Sciences 0654, a single generalist is often the right answer because the content is a compressed subset. For three separate Extended entries aimed at HL or A Level sciences, subject specialists per paper produce better marks, and the cost of that is three sessions a week rather than one.

What happens if no tutor is free for our slot and syllabus?+

We say so rather than filling the slot with whoever is available. Niche combinations, a particular Edexcel code at a particular hour on a particular evening, do occasionally come up empty. In that case the options are a different time, a different tutor with a short handover, or a wait with a date attached. A provider who never has a coverage gap is either very large or not being straight with you, and the cost of a mismatched tutor in Year 11 is a term, which is not recoverable.

Start with one marked paper, not a package

If you are looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Hor Al Anz, the fastest useful step is to find the statement of entry, note the syllabus codes, and photograph the most recent marked mock paper. From those two things a specialist can tell you whether you are looking at a content gap, a technique problem or a tier ceiling, and roughly how many weeks each one takes to shift. The trial lesson is a working session on a real past-paper question with live mark-scheme marking, and no payment is taken before it. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE.
