IGCSE Tutor Cost in Dubai

The IGCSE tutor cost in Dubai that matters is not the hourly rate. It is the rate divided by the marks it moved on comparable papers, which is a number almost nobody calculates. This page sets out how to measure it: what evidence a paid hour should produce, how to read a ten-week mark trend, when to review spending, and the three situations in which buying more hours is the wrong decision. Tuition is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Market rates in AED attributed to whoever published them
  • Spend measured against comparable timed papers, not against effort
  • Written review points with a stated consequence either way

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A rate is an input, not a cost

Families in Dubai compare tuition on the hourly rate because it is the only number on offer. It is also the number least related to what the spending achieves. AED 150 an hour that produces no marked work and no measurable movement is more expensive than AED 300 an hour that moves a candidate from a 5 to a 7, because the cheaper arrangement bought nothing and the dearer one bought a grade. The useful figure is cost per mark moved on comparable papers, and the reason nobody quotes it is that calculating it requires evidence most arrangements never produce.

The published market bands are the starting point. A qualified subject tutor working online with a Dubai family charges roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour at October 2026 rates: Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150, TutorChase quotes AED 270, and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts specialist exam-year work at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tier. Those are market figures attributed to their publishers, not IB Gram's prices.

What this page adds is the denominator. A paid hour should leave a trace: a timed question set marked against the published criteria, annotations at the point of loss, a short written note on what changed, and at intervals, a paper comparable to the one sat in week one. With those, ten weeks of tuition produces a mark trend, and a trend divided into a total spend is a cost you can actually judge. Without them, you have a feeling about whether things are better, which is what most tuition decisions in this market are made on.

The discipline this requires is unglamorous and cheap. Comparable means the same difficulty, timed the same way, marked to the same criteria. A tutor who sets easier work as the term progresses produces a rising line that measures nothing, and families reading that line conclude the money is working. Equally, a child who is given more help during a session scores higher on the work done in it, which is why the measurement has to be on unaided timed work rather than on anything completed together.

IB Gram is an independent IB and IGCSE tutor-matching platform, with no affiliation to Cambridge International, to Pearson, or to any Dubai school named here. Tuition for families in the UAE is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visiting is offered only in India. That matters to the cost question in one direct way: the travel line disappears from the fee, and the tutor pool is set by the clock rather than by a twenty-minute radius, which is what makes a specification specialist affordable for a family in Dubai South rather than only for one in Jumeirah.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The same hourly rate buys different amounts of movement at different stages, which is the single biggest reason two Dubai families paying the same figure get very different value from it.

KS3Ages 12-14 · Years 8-9

Years 8-9, before the course begins

The highest return per dirham in the whole sequence, and the hardest to measure, because there is no past paper to sit. The proxy is a short topic test repeated after a month on the same content. Movement here prevents a Year 11 problem rather than fixing one, which is why the cost looks like insurance and behaves like it.

Dubai schools admit new arrivals across the year, so Year 9 classes hold children from CBSE, American and different British schemes. Where a gap is a specific untaught topic rather than general weakness, six hours often closes it and twenty would be waste. A diagnostic that names the topics is therefore the first purchase, not a term of weekly sessions.

IGCSE-Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, first teaching

The best measurable value, because school assessments provide a natural comparable series and the work is alongside first teaching rather than on top of it. Movement shows up within a term, and the hours needed for a given gain are roughly half what the same gain costs in Year 11.

Year 10 is also when the tier decision is live. Dubai entries are submitted months ahead of the papers, so an evidenced opinion on Core versus Extended in the autumn term can change what the certificate is capable of showing. That is a use of tuition money with a discrete, checkable outcome rather than a general one.

IGCSE-Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, the examination year

The most measurable stage and the dearest. Past papers give genuinely comparable instruments, so a ten-week block produces a readable trend. Rates also peak here: specialist exam-year work in this market runs AED 200 to AED 450 and above, and the scarce tutors are scarcest at exactly the moment demand arrives.

Because Dubai centres enter candidates across Cambridge's March, June and November series and Pearson's May/June and November series, the ten-week window before a child's own papers can fall at very different points in the year. Booking a named specialist a series ahead costs less and matches better than booking one eight weeks out.

RESITAges 16+

Resits and private candidates

The clearest cost calculation available, because the previous attempt is the baseline. You know the mark, you know the paper, and a comparable paper under timed conditions tells you where the candidate now stands. The complication is logistics rather than teaching: entries, centres and deadlines that a school would ordinarily handle.

For a Dubai candidate the retake route is the November series rather than a spring one, because Cambridge offers its February and March series in India only. November is therefore the earliest sitting after a June result, and Cambridge entries for it close in the preceding summer. Pearson runs May/June and November as well, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026 and results reaching students in January. Entry deadlines, not teaching time, are what usually decide a resit plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Cost per mark differs sharply by subject, because the marks available to recover differ. These notes say where the recoverable marks sit in each subject and therefore how quickly spending should show up in a trend.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

The fastest subject to show movement, because method marks are recoverable immediately. A candidate who starts writing one line of working before each answer gains marks on the next paper they sit, which makes a ten-week trend here unusually readable.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Two distinct mark pools. The practical paper's losses are checklist-fixable and show up within weeks; the quantitative theory topics take longer and move more slowly. A good plan targets the practical pool first because the evidence arrives sooner.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole fluency is the single lever. It is slow to install and then moves marks across several papers at once, which produces a flat trend for three or four weeks followed by a step. Families who stop at week four because nothing moved often stop just before it would have.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Mostly command-term discipline, which is a rule rather than content, so movement is quick and cheap. This is often the subject where the lowest spend produces the clearest trend, and where a long weekly commitment is poor value compared with a short block.

English Language (0500 / 0510)

First and second language routes

Reading-response marks are among the most teachable on any paper and show movement within a few weeks. Writing marks move more slowly. Measure the two components separately or the trend will look flat when half of it is rising.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Core and Extended

Nearly all recoverable marks sit in the long questions, in application and evaluation. Because those marks are large and few, individual paper scores are noisy, so a trend needs more data points here than in Maths before it means anything.

Computer Science (0478)

Extended only

Paper 2 pseudocode marks are recoverable quickly once the published conventions are learned, which produces a sharp early step. Paper 1 theory vocabulary responds to structured recall testing and moves steadily rather than suddenly.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Extended only

The slowest and most expensive to move, because the losses sit in prerequisite fluency rather than in the topic being examined. Expect a longer flat period and budget more hours; a ten-week trend may show little even where the work is correct.

Coordinated and Combined Sciences (0654, 0653)

Core and Extended

Measure by discipline rather than overall, because one weak strand of three drags the aggregate and hides movement in the other two. Reporting a single score here is the commonest way a working plan looks like a failing one.

Geography (0460) and History (0470)

Core and Extended

Case-study specificity and arguing from the source are the recoverable pools. Both respond to marked written work rather than to lesson time, so a plan weighted towards marking rather than teaching usually produces a better trend per dirham.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each format produces evidence at a different speed, and the cost question is really a question about which evidence you need and how soon.

A bounded diagnostic block

Four to six sessions at an agreed total, bought to establish what is wrong and how many hours would fix it. The cheapest way to find out whether tuition is the right spend at all, and the only format that can honestly end in a recommendation not to continue.

  • A fixed total agreed before anything starts
  • Week one is a marked timed paper used as the baseline
  • Ends with named causes and an hour estimate in writing
  • No obligation to continue when the block finishes

A ten-week measured block

Weekly sessions with timed work marked at consistent difficulty between them, and a comparable paper at week ten against the week-one baseline. This is the shortest arrangement that produces a trend rather than a reading, and it is the format this page is built around.

  • Comparable papers at the start and the end
  • Timed sets at consistent difficulty throughout
  • A short written note after each session
  • A stated decision at week six, not a progress report

Exam-term intensive

Two or three shorter sessions a week across the eight to ten weeks before the papers, built on timed past-paper work. Costs most per hour and produces evidence fastest, because the instruments are real papers. Expect explicit triage: the topics being left alone should be named.

  • Every session built on work marked beforehand
  • Explicit triage with the uncovered topics named
  • Booked a series ahead where a specialist is needed
  • Scheduling around Ramadan timings and study leave

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IGCSE tutor cost in Dubai should produce for the money

  • Budget rates buy supervision, which leaves nothing to measure
  • Mid-band rates should buy marked work, annotations and written reporting
  • Specialist rates should additionally buy paper-level mark-recovery planning
  • The commonest overpayment is a supervision product at a mid-band rate

Each band in this market should produce a different kind of evidence, and knowing which is which prevents most disappointment. At AED 33 to AED 65, the published rates of two providers here, you are buying supervision: a student is kept on task and questions get answered. That is a real service and it leaves almost no trace, so there is nothing to measure. Expecting a mark trend from it is a category error rather than a complaint.

At AED 150 to AED 300, the band a qualified subject tutor occupies, you should be getting marked written work between sessions, annotations at the point of loss, a short written note per session and a diagnosis in week one. That is enough to build a trend. At AED 200 to AED 450 and above, the specialist and exam-year band, you should additionally be getting paper-level knowledge: which of the available marks this candidate is leaving behind, on which component, and in what order they will be recovered.

The table below sets that out band by band. Use it to judge a quote rather than to haggle. A provider charging mid-band rates who produces no marked work between sessions is charging specialist prices for a supervision product, and that mismatch is the commonest overpayment in this market. Equally, a budget provider doing exactly what budget providers do is not failing, and asking them for a marked paper trend is asking for something that was never in the price.

Cost per mark moved: a worked ten-week example

The calculation is simple once the evidence exists. Sit a comparable paper in week one and again at week ten, under the same timing and marked to the same criteria. Divide the total spend by the difference in marks. The result is a number you can compare across subjects, across providers and across years, and it is the only figure in this market that reflects what the money did rather than what it cost.

The table below works through a single illustrative case: a Year 11 candidate on Cambridge Extended Chemistry, ten weekly hours at AED 220, with a timed Paper 4 section as the instrument at both ends. The numbers are an example of the method rather than a claim about outcomes; no provider can promise a particular movement, and a flat result is a possible honest outcome of a well-run block. What the table shows is how the arithmetic reads in both the good case and the bad one.

Two warnings about using it. First, marks on a single paper are noisy, so a difference of two or three marks is not a trend; it is weather. That is why a mid-point reading at week five matters, and why Economics needs more data points than Maths before anything can be concluded. Second, the instrument has to be unaided. A paper completed with help, or one the student has seen before, measures the help and the memory rather than the learning, and a tutor who supplies the measurement paper should not also have worked through it in a session.

03

Comparable marked work, and how to tell when it is not

  • Practice work can be as helpful as the tutor likes; measurement work cannot
  • One unaided, timed, unseen set a month is enough to build a trend
  • Ask to see the first and last instruments side by side
  • Drift in difficulty is the commonest reason a trend is flattering

Comparability is the whole technique, and it fails quietly. The commonest failure is drift in difficulty: a tutor choosing question sets that suit what has just been taught, which is good teaching and terrible measurement. The second is timing: work done at leisure at the kitchen table is not comparable with work done in twenty-five minutes. The third is assistance, which includes the subtle kind, where a tutor sitting alongside asks a leading question at the moment the student stalls.

The fix is to separate the two functions explicitly. Practice work can be anything: scaffolded, discussed, revisited, as helpful as the tutor can make it. Measurement work is unaided, timed, from a paper the student has not seen, marked to the published criteria, and used only to answer the question of where they now stand. Agreeing with a tutor that one set a month is measurement and the rest is practice costs nothing and makes the whole trend legible.

Parents can audit this without subject knowledge. Ask to see the week-one instrument and the week-ten instrument side by side and ask one question: are these the same difficulty. Ask whether the second was timed and whether anyone was present. If the answer to the first is no or the answer about assistance is unclear, the trend is not evidence, and the honest position is that you do not yet know whether the money worked. That is a better place to be than a confident wrong conclusion.

04

When to review the spending, and what to decide

Review cadence does more for the cost of tuition than negotiating the rate ever will. Most money wasted in this market is wasted slowly, by arrangements that run without a point at which anybody asks whether they are working. A schedule fixes that, and it has to be set at the start, because setting it later feels like an accusation and tends not to happen.

Four points are enough. At session one, you should receive named causes and an hour estimate. At week five, a mid-point reading that tells you whether anything is moving, with the decision being either continue or revise the diagnosis. At week ten, a comparable paper and a cost per mark. And once a year, usually in September, a whole-budget review against the rest of the household's education spending, which is where the question of how many subjects to support actually belongs.

Each review point needs a stated consequence, or it is a report rather than a decision. Flat at week five means the diagnosis changes or the arrangement does. Flat at week ten after a revised plan means tuition is probably not the intervention this child needs, and a tutor willing to say that is worth more than one who is not. The three honest outcomes are continue, change the plan, and stop, and a provider who only ever reaches the first is not reviewing anything. Put the dates in your own calendar rather than relying on the tutor to raise them, and send a one-line message a week beforehand asking for the comparable set to be ready. That small piece of administration is what turns a cadence on paper into one that actually happens.

05

Why the cheapest hour is often the dearest

  • A year of unmeasured budget sessions can cost more per result than ten measured weeks
  • Supervision keeps a child working; diagnosis changes the grade
  • Paying specialist rates for pre-specification foundation work is the opposite error
  • Ask whether the problem is content or assessment before choosing a band

A budget tutor at AED 50 an hour who meets a child weekly for a year costs roughly AED 1,500 to AED 2,500 and, if no written work is marked and no diagnosis was made, may move nothing at all. A specialist at AED 300 who runs a bounded ten-week block costs AED 3,000 and moves a grade. The second is dearer per hour and cheaper per result, and the first is the version families regret, because it feels prudent throughout and produces nothing to point at.

The mechanism is diagnosis. A child achieving grade 5 in Chemistry has usually met every topic on the specification and has two or three recurring, specific failures. Re-teaching the content does not touch them, because the child believes they answered correctly. Supervision keeps them working and leaves the failures in place. What changes the grade is someone reading the working, naming the cause and teaching that, and that is the skill the price difference between the bands is actually buying.

The opposite error is also real. Paying specialist rates for a Year 8 child building algebraic fluency is paying for paper-level knowledge that nothing in the work calls on. A strong general teacher is sufficient and sometimes better there. The test is whether the problem is content or assessment: content problems respond to good teaching at any price point, assessment problems respond only to someone who knows how these specific papers award marks.

06

Three stop rules worth agreeing in advance

  • A flat trend after one revised plan means the next conversation is with the school
  • A plan that delivered six of ten sessions has not been tested; change the slot
  • Where tuition is not the right intervention, the honest answer is to stop
  • Where no specialist is available, that should be stated rather than substituted

Buying more hours is sometimes the wrong purchase, and the situations in which that is true are predictable enough to name before you start. The first is a flat trend after a revised plan. If the diagnosis has already been changed once and comparable work has still not moved across ten weeks, further hours are unlikely to be the answer, and the next conversation should be with the school rather than with a tutor.

The second is a scheduling failure disguised as a teaching failure. A plan of ten sessions that delivered six, because the slot sat at 18:30 after a long school run and the child arrived exhausted, has not been tested. More hours at the same hour will not help. The fix is a different time, a shorter session, or a different day, and it costs nothing. Dubai evenings are crowded, and this accounts for a surprising share of arrangements that appear to be failing.

The third is a mismatch between what is wrong and what tuition can do. Where the barrier is attendance, an unaddressed learning difference, or a subject the child does not need and will drop at 16, the honest recommendation is to spend the money elsewhere or not at all. A provider willing to say so in week five is a provider whose week-ten advice is worth taking. Where IB Gram cannot find a tutor who covers a specification at a workable hour, it says so rather than offering a substitute.

07

The exam calendar counted backwards, and what it does to cost

Timing moves tuition costs more than negotiation does, and the reason is that the calendar is fixed and demand is not. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, and those are the only two a Dubai candidate can sit, because Cambridge offers its February and March series in India only. Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests do run in March, May and October, but those are not IGCSE and should never be read as an extra sitting. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. Each of those series has an entry deadline that sits months before the papers.

The clearest worked example is the Pearson November 2026 series, because its dates are published and precise. The final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, and the results do not land until the new year: November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson's summer series is the mirror image, with June 2026 results going to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. Cambridge works on the same logic across its June and November series, with entries closing months ahead of the first paper, but the exact entry date belongs to your centre's key dates and the correct zone timetable rather than to a figure anyone should restate from memory. Either way the cost consequence is identical. The decisions that commit money, meaning the tier, the subject list and how many specialist hours are bought, are all made a term or two before anybody sits down in the hall.

One administrative detail is worth more than it sounds. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and it is essential that the correct version of the timetable for that zone is used, because Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which can be revised, so any plan should be built against the live official timetable rather than a restated date. Dates for IB sessions are not published on this page because they could not be verified from the IB directly, and any IB date should be confirmed with the school's coordinator.

Cost by starting point: three Dubai households

Abstract bands are less useful than cases, so here are three, drawn as composites rather than as real families. The first is a Year 10 student in Mirdif at grade 6 in Extended Maths whose school reports say effort is fine. The cause turns out to be unwritten working, the plan is ten weekly hours, and the trend shows in three weeks because method marks are recoverable immediately. The spend is modest and the cost per mark is the lowest of the three.

The second is a Year 11 student in Jumeirah Village Circle at grade 5 in Chemistry, eight weeks from the papers. There is no time to rebuild, so the plan is triage: mole conversions and one other high-mark topic, two shorter sessions a week, everything built on timed questions marked beforehand. The hourly rate is at the top of the range because the specialist and the season are both scarce, and the evidence arrives fast because real papers are the instrument.

The third is a Year 9 student in Dubai South with gaps from a mid-year arrival from a different curriculum. The cause is a handful of untaught topics rather than weakness, the plan is a six-session diagnostic block followed by eight focused hours, and the instrument is a repeated topic test rather than a past paper. Cost per mark cannot be calculated meaningfully at this stage, which is worth saying out loud rather than inventing a number for.

What online delivery does to the cost-evidence link

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; tuition for UAE families runs online, one-to-one, over live video, and home visiting is a service offered only in India. For a page about cost measured against evidence, the format matters in three specific ways rather than as a general preference.

The first is that the travel line leaves the fee, so more of the hourly rate is teaching and marking. The second is that the session length follows the student rather than a journey, which means a sixty-minute slot is available where sixty minutes is what the child can sustain, and the measurement work is not padded to justify a drive. The third is the pool: a specification specialist for 0606 or 0478 becomes available to a family in Dubai South at the same rate as to a family in Jumeirah, because the constraint is the clock rather than a twenty-minute radius.

One thing online delivery makes easier is the record itself. Written work exchanged digitally, marked and returned with annotations, accumulates into exactly the trail this page asks for, without anyone needing to keep a folder. The honest limitation is also worth stating: a tutor in the room can hold the attention of a younger or very distractible child in a way a screen has to work harder at, and that is a real consideration for families with children at the younger end of the IGCSE course.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Delivery is online, so the area a Dubai family lives in does not change the rate. What it changes is whether sessions actually happen at a workable hour, and a ten-week trend built on seven sessions is not a ten-week trend.

Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters

Late school-bus arrivals push a realistic start to 17:00, and high relocation turnover means mid-year starts. A mid-year start needs a sharper week-one baseline, because there is less runway for a flat period before the evidence has to speak.

Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Afternoon journeys across Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road make 17:30 the earliest honest start. The main threat to a readable trend here is cancelled sessions rather than ineffective ones, which is an argument for two shorter slots a week.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

Schools close by and children home early, so 16:00 holds and attendance is consistent. Large IGCSE cohorts mean plenty of school assessment data to use as comparable instruments alongside past papers.

Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches

Families here often run two subjects in one evening, which makes the review conversation easier because both have the same number of sessions behind them. Watch for the second subject being measured less carefully than the first.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

The earliest feasible starts in the city, often competing with swimming and music commitments that already own the early evening. Where the evening is full, a thirty-minute marking review plus a shorter session often beats one long slot.

Business Bay, Downtown and DIFC

Tower living where the binding constraint is a quiet room rather than a journey. Timed work completed in a noisy space is not comparable work, so where to sit the measurement paper is part of the plan rather than a detail.

Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Qusais

Strong IGCSE Maths and science demand, with sessions timed around Maghrib and family dinner. Ramadan shifts the slot again, and a plan that does not anticipate that loses two or three weeks from its own trend.

Dubai South, Mudon and Town Square

The thinnest local pool for scarce specifications, which matters to cost rather than to scheduling: online delivery is what makes an 0606 or 0478 specialist available here at the same rate as in a central community.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the specification code, tier and series

Cambridge 0620 Extended for March and Pearson 4CH1 for November are different plans with different deadlines. The code is on the statement of entry, and sending it first means the quote and the calendar are right the first time.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, with no card details taken

One session before any payment. Use it to test whether the tutor can read a returned script and name where the marks went. That answer in the first few minutes predicts the quality of every diagnosis that follows.

  3. 03

Set the baseline in week one

The first working session is an unaided timed paper, used as the instrument you will measure against later. Keep it. A plan without a week-one baseline cannot produce a cost per mark at week ten, however good the teaching is.

  4. 04

Agree the review cadence before paying

A mid-point reading at week five with the decision being continue or revise, a comparable paper at week ten, and a stated consequence at each. Ten minutes of agreement at the start is what makes the spending reviewable later.

  5. 05

Calculate the number at week ten

Total spend divided by marks moved on comparable unaided work. Compare it against the next ten weeks' target rather than against another family's hourly rate. Three outcomes are honest: continue, change the plan, or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates in AED with the publisher named

Every figure here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, in the currency Dubai families transact in. Half the pages ranking for these queries publish no price, and two of those that do quote US dollars.

Spending measured against unaided timed work

The instrument is a comparable paper the student has not seen, timed and marked to the published criteria, with nobody alongside. Anything completed with help measures the help. That distinction is what makes a trend mean something.

Review points with a stated consequence

Week five decides continue or revise. Week ten produces a cost per mark and three honest options: continue, change the plan, or stop. A provider that only ever reaches the first option is not reviewing anything.

The exam calendar counted backwards

Entry deadlines sit months before papers. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran to 19 November 2026 and entries for it closed over the preceding summer; Cambridge June entries close in the spring, well ahead of the first paper. Every Cambridge centre sits in one of six administrative zones and must use that zone's timetable.

No promised grades and no invented statistics

No provider controls papers, marking or boundaries, so no grade is promised here. No satisfaction percentage or average-score figure appears on this page, because none could be published with a sample, a date and a method behind it.

An independent platform with no claimed approval

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds and claims no approval from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson, operates no UAE office, and delivers UAE tuition online rather than at a family's address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is a reasonable IGCSE tutor cost in Dubai for weekly one-to-one sessions?+

A qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour at October 2026 published rates: Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and TutorChase quotes AED 270, while Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialist exam-year work at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Across thirty teaching weeks that is roughly AED 4,500 to AED 9,000 for one subject. Whether it is reasonable depends on what the hour produces. At that band you should be receiving marked timed work between sessions, annotations at the point of loss and a written note after each session.

How do I work out whether tuition spending is actually achieving anything?+

Divide what you have spent by the marks moved on comparable unaided work. Sit a timed paper in week one and a comparable one at week ten, both unseen, both marked to the published criteria, with nobody sitting alongside. The difference in marks is the numerator's partner, and the resulting figure is the only number in this market that reflects what the money did. A difference of two or three marks on a single paper is noise rather than a trend, which is why a mid-point reading at week five matters as much as the end point.

What makes two question sets comparable enough to measure against each other?+

Four things: the same difficulty, the same timing, a paper the student has not seen, and marking to the same published criteria without assistance during the attempt. Comparability fails quietly. The commonest failure is drift, where a tutor picks sets suited to what has just been taught, which is good teaching and useless measurement. The practical fix is to separate the functions: practice work can be as scaffolded as the tutor likes, while one unaided timed set a month is reserved purely for measurement and is never worked through in a session first.

Why has our tuition produced nothing visible after four weeks?+

Three explanations are common and they need different responses. In Chemistry, mole fluency is slow to install and then moves marks across several papers at once, so a flat four weeks followed by a step is the normal shape and stopping at week four means stopping just before the gain. Alternatively the instrument is wrong: work done with help, or sets of drifting difficulty, will not show movement that is actually happening. Or the diagnosis was wrong, which is what the week-five decision point exists to catch. Ask which of the three it is.

Is a cheap IGCSE tutor in Dubai a false economy?+

Sometimes, and the mechanism is specific. At AED 33 to AED 65, the published rates of two providers here, you are buying supervision: a student is kept on task and questions get answered. That is a real service that leaves no measurable trace, so a year of it can cost AED 2,000 and move nothing. A grade 5 candidate has usually met every topic and has two or three recurring specific failures, and only someone reading the working and naming the cause changes that. Judge a budget provider on what budget providers do, and do not ask it for a mark trend.

When should we decide to stop paying for IGCSE tuition?+

Three situations justify stopping rather than buying more hours. A flat trend after the diagnosis has already been revised once, where the next conversation belongs with the school. A plan that delivered six of ten sessions because the slot was too late in a Dubai evening, which has not been tested and should be rescheduled rather than extended. And a mismatch between the barrier and what tuition can address, such as attendance or an unaddressed learning difference. A tutor willing to name any of these in week five is one whose week-ten advice is worth taking.

How far ahead of the IGCSE series should we book to keep the cost down?+

A series ahead. Demand for specification specialists peaks from January into the May and June papers, and it spikes a second time in the autumn, when November candidates and June resitters compete for the same few people, so the scarce tutors are scarcest exactly when families start looking. Booking in September for a June series costs less and produces a better match than booking in February. The deadline that really bites is administrative rather than academic: Cambridge entries for a June series close in the spring, months before the first paper, and the Pearson November 2026 timetable ran to 19 November 2026 with its entries shut since the preceding summer.

Which IGCSE subjects show movement fastest for the money?+

Mathematics, because method marks are recoverable immediately: a candidate who starts writing one line of working before each answer gains marks on the next paper they sit. Biology next, since much of the loss is command-term discipline, which is a rule rather than content. Physics practical skills respond to a checklist within weeks. Chemistry moves in a step after a flat period while mole fluency installs. Additional Mathematics 0606 is slowest, because the losses sit in prerequisite fluency rather than in the topic being examined, so budget more hours and expect a longer flat stretch.

Should I measure my child's progress by school reports instead?+

Use them, but not alone. School assessments are a useful free supply of comparable instruments, particularly in Dubai schools with frequent internal testing, and asking for the mark rather than the comment makes them usable. Two cautions. Report comments describe effort and attitude, which are not what tuition was bought to change. And internal assessments vary in difficulty between terms for reasons nobody documents, so a term-on-term fall can be an instrument effect. A past paper under timed conditions remains the cleanest instrument available in Years 10 and 11.

Does paying more per hour get a better IGCSE result?+

Only where the extra buys something the problem calls on. Specialist rates buy paper-level knowledge: which available marks this candidate is leaving behind, on which component, and in what order to recover them. For a Year 11 candidate weeks from a paper, that is the whole value. For a Year 8 child building algebraic fluency it is knowledge nothing in the work uses, and a strong general teacher is sufficient and sometimes better. The test is whether the problem is content or assessment. Families routinely buy the expensive version for content problems and the cheap one for assessment problems.

What does a resit cost us in time as well as money in Dubai?+

Less time than families assume, because the calendar offers two sittings a year rather than one. Cambridge runs June and November, and Pearson runs May/June and November, so a June candidate can often sit again in the autumn instead of waiting a full year. What a Dubai family cannot use is the February and March series, which Cambridge offers in India only. The constraint is entry deadlines rather than teaching: November entries close over the summer, before a June result has been fully digested, which is why the resit framework has to exist before results day. A resit is also the cleanest cost calculation available, since the previous result is a ready-made baseline and a comparable unseen paper tells you immediately where the candidate now stands.

Can online tuition be measured as reliably as sessions in our home?+

More easily, in practice. Written work exchanged digitally, marked and returned with annotations, accumulates into exactly the record a cost calculation needs without anyone maintaining a folder. The travel line also leaves the fee, so more of the hourly rate is teaching and marking, and session length follows the student rather than a journey, which keeps measurement work from being padded. The honest limitation is attention: a tutor in the room holds a younger or very distractible child more easily, and that is worth weighing for children at the younger end of the course.

Why do Dubai providers quote such different prices for the same IGCSE subject?+

Because the hour contains different things and the word tutor spans a twentyfold range here. Published figures run from AED 33 to AED 65 at the budget end up to AED 650 for one provider's premium named tier. Scarcity moves it too: Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 pseudocode work and Arabic as a first language have thin pools and price accordingly, while Extended Maths and English are competitive. Season matters as well, with rates rising from January as the series approaches. Ask what the hour includes rather than comparing headline numbers.

What should I ask for in writing before the first paid session?+

Four things, and they take one message. Named causes from the diagnosis, specific enough to be re-tested in a fortnight. An estimated hour count from someone willing to be shown wrong. The review cadence, with week five as a decision rather than a report. And confirmation of what written work will be marked between sessions and what note you will receive afterwards. A provider who supplies all four is quoting a product you can later evaluate; one who supplies only an hourly rate has given you a figure and nothing to judge it by.

Does a Cambridge exam zone really affect our planning in Dubai?+

It affects which timetable you work to, which matters more than it sounds. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for that zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask your child's exams officer which zone the centre sits in and work from that timetable. Pearson publishes provisional timetables that can be revised, so build any plan against the live official document rather than a restated date.

One number, calculated once a term

Sit an unaided timed paper in week one and keep it. Agree a mid-point reading at week five with a decision attached, and a comparable paper at week ten. Then divide what you spent by the marks that moved. That single calculation, done once a term, tells you more than any comparison of hourly rates across Dubai providers, and it makes the three honest outcomes available: continue, change the plan, or stop. A free trial lesson comes first, with no card details and no commitment, and the diagnosis that follows should arrive in writing.
