IGCSE Science Tutor in The Springs

A parent looking for an IGCSE science tutor in The Springs is usually asking one question: is there anybody who genuinely knows the specification my child is sitting? The honest answer is that there are plenty of science graduates and rather fewer people who can tell you how the qualitative analysis notes work or what a six-mark explain question wants. IB Gram matches specialists for one-to-one lessons over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial.

  • Biology, chemistry and physics matched as separate specialisms
  • Syllabus code and tier confirmed before any lesson is booked
  • Command-word and six-mark answer work in every plan
  • Practical records stay the student's own work, reviewed never written

IB & IGCSE in The Springs

Science is one word on a timetable and three different jobs

The question behind this search is a fair one and deserves a straight answer. Yes, there are science tutors available to families in The Springs, and no, most of them do not know all three sciences to the same depth. Biology, chemistry and physics are examined by the same board in the same fortnight and they reward completely different habits. A tutor who is genuinely strong in one is often adequate in the second and guessing in the third, and the only way a parent finds out is by asking questions specific enough that a general answer cannot hide.

Here is what differs. Biology marks are won and lost on terminology: the mark scheme accepts particular words and rejects near-synonyms, so an answer that sounds right scores nothing. Chemistry marks turn on arithmetic and on symbolic accuracy - moles, balanced equations, state symbols, and the tables of tests for ions and gases supplied with the paper. Physics marks depend on unit discipline, rearranging an equation under pressure, and reading a gradient rather than a data point. Three subjects, three diagnostic patterns, three different first lessons.

The second thing worth establishing is which qualification is on the entry. Cambridge separate sciences carry the codes 0610 for biology, 0620 for chemistry and 0625 for physics, with Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single. Pearson uses 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Double Award Science 4SD0. The paper counts differ, and so does how practical skills are assessed: Cambridge sets a separate practical or alternative-to-practical component, while Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. A tutor who does not ask which of these applies has told you something already.

The third is tier, where it exists. Cambridge separate sciences are entered at Core or Extended, and that decision caps the grade available regardless of how good the teaching is. A family paying specialist rates to chase a top grade while the entry sits at Core tier is paying for an outcome the entry form has excluded. Ask the department which tier each science is entered at, because it is not unusual for one of the three to differ from the other two.

Delivery, stated plainly: all lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, because home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For science specifically, the online format makes practical work easier to teach rather than harder, because a tutor can put a real examiner's photograph of apparatus on the screen and ask what is wrong with it, which a textbook at a kitchen table cannot do.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science support from a Springs household arrives at four recognisable points, and what a tutor should be doing is different at each. Naming the point first prevents a general plan being applied to a specific problem.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Pre-IGCSE

Year 9, before the science route is chosen

The decision that matters most is whether the student takes three separate sciences, a double award or a single. A child on double award cannot later present separate physics and chemistry grades to a department that asks for them. Tutoring here is advisory and short: two or three sessions to establish whether the separate route is realistic.

Option evenings in schools serving The Springs sit in the spring term of Year 9, with forms due within a fortnight. Ask specifically how many periods a week the separate-science route takes and what it displaces, because in several Dubai schools it costs the second language or the arts option.

Y10Ages 14-15 · First IGCSE year

Year 10

Content is being taught for the first time, which makes consolidation cheap and effective. The highest-value work here is building the habits the mark schemes reward: writing in the terminology biology expects, setting out chemistry calculations line by line, and stating units in physics every single time.

Tier is usually provisional through Year 10 in Dubai schools and firms up over the year. A diagnostic now is the strongest evidence a parent can bring to a conversation about moving a science from Core to Extended, and it is far easier to have that conversation in Year 10 than in Year 11.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Examination year

Year 11 and the examination series

The work narrows to the components the mock actually flagged: extended-answer structure, the practical paper, and the three or four topics losing most marks. General revision across three sciences at this stage spreads thin and produces little. One science at a time, diagnosed, is the pattern that works.

Cambridge examines IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and Pearson International GCSE in May/June and November. Entry deadlines sit months before the papers, so by the spring term the route and the tier are fixed and only technique remains movable.

POST16Ages 16+ · Post-16

Into A Level or the IB Diploma

The science grade is read as a prerequisite, and the separate-science route is read as evidence of readiness. A Level chemistry departments look hardest at the quantitative work; IB Diploma coordinators look at whether a student can sustain an extended investigation, which IGCSE barely asks for.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, with enrolment up six per cent during 2025-26. Post-16 science options from The Springs are broader than they were for an older sibling and worth checking rather than assuming.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the science subjects and components Emirates Living families most often ask about, with what each one actually assesses. The description is the thing to test a prospective tutor against.

Biology (Cambridge 0610)

Core and Extended

A terminology subject before it is a science subject. Transport in plants, enzyme graphs, genetic crosses and homeostasis carry most of the lost marks, usually because an answer used an everyday word where the mark scheme wanted a precise one. Highly trainable once a student sees the pattern.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620)

Core and Extended

Mole arithmetic, balanced and ionic equations with state symbols, and the supplied notes on tests for ions and gases. Students who can recite a reactivity series still lose marks on titration calculations and on writing formulae for compound ions.

Physics (Cambridge 0625)

Core and Extended

Equation selection and rearrangement, unit discipline, and reading gradients rather than points. Electricity, waves and momentum are the recurring Dubai weak spots, and most of the mark loss is procedural rather than conceptual.

Co-ordinated Sciences (Cambridge 0654)

Double award, Core and Extended

One qualification worth two grades, covering all three disciplines in less depth than the separate route. A student on 0654 does not need three tutors; they need one who knows precisely which parts of each discipline the double award includes and which it leaves out.

Combined Science (Cambridge 0653)

Single award, Core and Extended

One grade across all three sciences, with the narrowest content of the Cambridge routes. Often the right choice for a student whose strengths lie elsewhere, and a route where tutoring should focus on securing the grade rather than extending the content.

Biology (Pearson 4BI1)

Single tier

Two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them rather than in a separate component. The extended-answer questions carry more weight than students expect, and the command word in the stem governs what structure the answer needs.

Chemistry (Pearson 4CH1)

Single tier

Two written papers, with quantitative chemistry and organic nomenclature the two areas where Dubai cohorts most often lose marks. Practical method questions appear in the written papers, so experimental technique still has to be taught explicitly.

Physics (Pearson 4PH1)

Single tier

Two written papers. Some equations are provided and others must be recalled, and knowing which is which is itself a revision task. Mark loss concentrates in multi-step calculations where a unit conversion was skipped early.

Double Award Science (Pearson 4SD0)

Single tier

Two grades from a combined course, with papers in each discipline. Useful for a broad timetable, and worth confirming with the school because its content map differs from Cambridge 0654 in ways that matter to a tutor.

The practical and alternative-to-practical component

Cambridge Core and Extended

Cambridge sets a practical test or a written alternative. Both reward method, variable control, tabulated results and graph discipline rather than manual dexterity, which is why they can be taught on a screen with real apparatus photographs and real data sets.

Extended-answer questions

All routes

The four- to six-mark questions where most of the recoverable marks sit. They need a structure keyed to the command word, a stated number of distinct points, and no repetition. Rarely taught explicitly and consistently worth two grade boundaries.

Mathematical skills in science

All routes

Rearranging formulae, standard form, significant figures, percentage change and gradient calculation. A student weak here loses physics and chemistry marks that look like science errors and are actually arithmetic ones, which is why a maths diagnostic often belongs in a science plan.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three practical arrangements for science support, which differ mainly in how many of the three disciplines they try to cover at once. Covering fewer, properly, is usually the better purchase.

One science, one weekly slot

Sixty minutes a week on the weakest of the three, with a specialist in that discipline. The arrangement that produces the clearest change, because the diagnosis stays narrow and the tutor can carry a running picture of what has been covered.

  • One discipline, one specialist, one fixed slot
  • Follows the school's own sequence
  • Written note after each lesson
  • Reviewed at four lessons against a named target

Two sciences, consecutive slots

Two specialists on the same evening, back to back. Common in Year 11 when chemistry and physics are both weak for different reasons, and it keeps four weekday evenings clear in a Springs household that also has football and Arabic practice to fit.

  • Two disciplines, two specialists, one evening
  • Suits a chemistry and physics pairing
  • Avoids one tutor stretching across both
  • Can be split between two children instead

A practical-paper and extended-answer block

Six to eight lessons on the two components that cut across all three sciences: the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and the four- to six-mark extended answers. Taught with real data sets and real apparatus photographs rather than from a textbook.

  • Variable control, tables, graphs and sources of error
  • Answer structure keyed to the command word
  • One science at a time, or all three where the skills transfer
  • Priced as a block with a stated endpoint

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Springs

01

Three sciences, three failure modes, three different first lessons

The useful starting point for a Springs parent is not which tutor is nearest but which of the three sciences is actually failing and why. The reason matters: a student losing biology marks and a student losing physics marks have different problems that happen to show up as the same number on a report. Treating them with the same weekly hour of general science help is why so many families report that tutoring did not change anything.

Biology fails on language. The content is largely accessible and the mark schemes are strict about wording, so a student who understands osmosis perfectly can score zero for describing it in everyday terms. The first lesson should involve marking the student's own written answers against real criteria and showing them which words earned marks and which did not. That single exercise changes more biology grades than a term of content revision.

Chemistry fails on arithmetic and symbols. Moles, concentrations, balanced equations, state symbols and formulae for compound ions are where the marks go, and a student can be confident about reactions and still lose a third of a paper. The first lesson should be a set of quantitative questions worked line by line, because setting out is itself where the method marks live.

Physics fails on procedure. Selecting the right equation, rearranging it before substituting, converting units at the start rather than the end, and reading a gradient instead of a single point. Almost none of that is conceptual, which is why physics often responds faster to tutoring than parents expect. The first lesson should be multi-step calculation questions with the working forced into a fixed format.

WHAT EACH SCIENCE ACTUALLY REWARDS, AND WHAT TO DO FIRST
ScienceWhat the marks rewardThe symptom at homeWhat a specialist does in lesson one
BiologyPrecise terminology and complete, non-repetitive pointsSays the right thing out loud, scores poorly in writingMarks the student's own answers against real criteria, word by word
ChemistryQuantitative accuracy, balanced equations, state symbolsKnows the reactions, loses the calculationsWorks quantitative questions line by line, setting out as a method
PhysicsEquation choice, rearrangement, units, gradientsUnderstands the idea, cannot finish the calculationMulti-step calculations with working in a fixed format

02

Biology: the vocabulary problem nobody names as a vocabulary problem

  • Mark schemes accept precise terms and reject everyday synonyms
  • A four-mark question needs four distinct points, not one point elaborated
  • Unlabelled axes and missing units lose marks that content knowledge cannot recover
  • Common real gaps: plant transport, enzyme graphs, multi-trait genetics, homeostasis

Most biology mark loss in Dubai cohorts is linguistic. A mark scheme asking about water movement wants water potential or concentration gradient, not thicker and thinner. A question on enzymes wants active site and denatured, not broken. The student who writes the everyday version has understood the biology and scored nothing, which is why the report says they are weak at a subject they can explain confidently at the dinner table.

The second pattern is incompleteness. Four-mark questions need four distinct points, and students routinely write the same point three ways because it feels like more writing. Mark schemes do not reward elaboration of one idea; they reward distinct ideas. Learning to count the marks and plan that many separate points is a technique lesson, not a content lesson, and it is cheap to deliver.

The third is the diagram. Biology papers ask for labelled diagrams, annotated graphs and completed tables, and marks are routinely lost to unlabelled axes, missing units on a rate, or a label line that touches the wrong structure. None of this requires a laboratory, which is one reason biology teaches well on a screen: the student writes, the tutor marks it live, and the habit changes within three or four lessons.

Where genuine content gaps exist in this community, they cluster around transport in plants, the specifics of enzyme graphs, genetic crosses with more than one trait, and homeostasis. A tutor who names those without being prompted has taught the syllabus. One who talks about building confidence in biology has not answered the question.

03

Chemistry: the mole, the equation and the tables supplied with the paper

  • Quantitative chemistry is scored on setting-out as well as the answer
  • Compound-ion formulae and state symbols are memorisable and usually not memorised
  • The supplied qualitative analysis notes need practising, not just knowing about
  • Organic naming is rule-based and among the cheapest topics to fix

Chemistry is where a Springs family most often sees a gap between apparent understanding and marks, and the cause is usually arithmetic rather than chemistry. Moles, molar masses, concentrations, reacting masses, percentage yield and titration calculations make up a substantial run of marks in the Extended papers, and they are scored on method as much as on the final answer. A student who writes a single line and a wrong number loses everything; a student who sets out each step loses one mark and keeps the rest.

Symbolic accuracy is the second area. Balanced equations with correct formulae and state symbols, ionic equations with spectator ions removed, and formulae for compound ions such as sulfate, carbonate and nitrate. These are memorisable and routinely not memorised, and a tutor who drills them methodically recovers marks across the whole paper rather than in one topic.

The third is specific to Cambridge: the notes on qualitative analysis supplied with the paper, covering tests for cations, anions and gases. Students who know the notes are provided often fail to practise using them, then meet them cold under time pressure. Practising with the supplied material is a distinct exercise and takes about two lessons.

Organic chemistry at this level is largely nomenclature, homologous series and a small set of reactions, and it is one of the cheapest topics to fix because it is rule-based. Where chemistry is genuinely difficult for a student, it is almost always the quantitative work, and that is where the hours should go.

04

Physics: units, rearrangement and the gradient

  • Convert units at the start of a calculation, not at the end
  • Know which equations your board supplies and which must be recalled
  • Gradients come from the line of best fit, not from two data points
  • Electricity mark loss is usually circuit reading rather than physics

Physics is the science that most often responds quickly to tutoring, because the mark loss is procedural. A multi-step calculation question gives marks for selecting the correct relationship, for substituting correctly, for the arithmetic and for the unit. A student who converts centimetres to metres at the end rather than the start loses the arithmetic mark and sometimes the unit mark too, on a question they fully understood.

Which equations are supplied differs by board, and knowing that is a revision task in itself. Pearson provides some relationships in the paper and expects others from memory; Cambridge expects recall of the relationships listed in its syllabus. A tutor should be able to tell you, for your child's specification, which list applies and which equations therefore have to be learned. Anyone who cannot has not opened the specification recently.

Graph work is the third concentration of marks. Papers ask for a line of best fit, a gradient calculated from two widely separated points on the line rather than from data points, and an interpretation of what the gradient represents physically. Students draw good graphs and then calculate the gradient from the nearest two crosses, which is the single commonest graph error in this market.

Content-wise, electricity, waves and momentum carry most of the lost marks in Dubai cohorts. Electricity in particular is usually a circuit-reading problem rather than a physics problem: a student who can redraw a circuit as a series of simple loops can answer most of what is asked, and that is a teachable habit rather than a talent.

05

The command word decides what the answer has to look like

Cambridge publishes a glossary of command words in its syllabuses, and Pearson's mark schemes are written to the same logic. The command word is not decoration. It tells the student how many kinds of thing the answer needs and in what relationship. State wants a bare fact. Describe wants what happens. Explain wants why, with a causal link. Suggest wants a plausible answer applied to an unfamiliar context. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence.

Most lost extended-answer marks in all three sciences come from answering a different command word than the one printed. A student asked to explain who describes instead has written something true that cannot be awarded. A student asked to compare who writes a paragraph about each substance separately loses the comparison marks even though both paragraphs are correct. This is the cheapest mark recovery available in science, and it is barely taught.

The method is mechanical, which is why it works. Read the command word. Count the marks. Plan that many distinct points. Write them without repeating. For explain questions, make sure a because or a therefore appears. For compare questions, make sure every sentence contains both things. Four lessons of marked practice generally embeds it, and the gain shows across all three sciences at once.

The table gives the common command words and the typical way each is mishandled. Check the glossary in your child's own syllabus, because wording and emphasis vary slightly between boards and between series.

One tutor for three sciences, or three specialists, and what each costs

This is the practical decision most Springs households face, and the answer depends on the route rather than the budget. A student on Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson Double Award 4SD0 is best served by one tutor who knows exactly which parts of each discipline the double award covers, because the risk with three specialists is that each teaches their full separate-science content and the student revises material the examination will not ask about.

A student on three separate sciences at Extended tier is usually better served by specialists, and rarely needs all three at once. The efficient pattern is sequential: diagnose all three, tutor the weakest for a block, then reassess. Running three weekly slots simultaneously costs three times as much and consumes three evenings, and in most households the second and third sciences improve anyway once the student's answer-writing and calculation habits change.

The cross-cutting block is the exception worth buying for all three at once. Command-word technique, extended-answer structure and the practical component transfer directly between the sciences, so six to eight lessons on those skills with one tutor benefits biology, chemistry and physics together. That is usually the best value purchase in the whole science budget.

How to tell in ten minutes whether somebody knows your child's specification

  • Which code and tier, and what does the tier change?
  • How are practical skills assessed on this specification?
  • What separates a describe answer from an explain answer in the mark scheme?
  • Which equations does this board supply, and what do the qualitative analysis notes contain?
  • Given this marked paper, what do the first four lessons cover?

This is the honest answer to the question in the search. You cannot verify a science tutor by credentials alone, because a biology degree says nothing about whether somebody has read the 0610 syllabus this year. What you can do is ask five questions whose answers are either specific or empty, and listen for which you get. The whole exercise takes ten minutes on a trial call.

Ask which code and tier the student is entered for, and what that changes. A specialist will ask you back rather than guess, and will know that Core and Extended are different papers with different grade ranges. Ask how the practical skills are assessed on that specification: Cambridge sets a separate practical or alternative-to-practical component, Pearson assesses within the written papers, and somebody who does not know which applies has not prepared a student for this examination recently.

Ask what the difference is between a describe and an explain question and how they mark it. Ask, for chemistry, what the supplied qualitative analysis notes contain and how they would teach a student to use them under time pressure. Ask, for physics, which equations that board provides and which must be recalled. Each of those has a concrete answer that takes thirty seconds, and a general reply about building strong foundations is itself the answer to your question.

Finally, ask what they would do in the first four lessons given a specific marked paper. A tutor who has taught the specification will name topics and components. A tutor who has not will describe a process. Neither answer is dishonest; only one tells you they have read the document your child is being examined on.

08

Practical records, coursework and the line a science tutor does not cross

  • A tutor teaches method and reviews the student's own write-up
  • A tutor must never write a practical record or supply results to present
  • Board papers and mark schemes are referenced and linked, not redistributed
  • Ask where the line sits before the first lesson, not after a submission

Science at this level involves written-up practical work, and in some routes that work contributes to an assessment. The boundary is the same across every board and it is worth hearing stated plainly before lessons begin. A tutor may teach experimental method, explain how variables are controlled, show how results should be tabulated, demonstrate graph conventions and give feedback on a write-up the student has produced. A tutor must never write the practical record, supply results for a student to present as their own, or edit a piece to completion.

The same applies to any investigation that a school submits. Providers in this market openly sell completed coursework, including finished Internal Assessments at four-figure prices. Buying that does not purchase a grade; it purchases a malpractice risk that falls on the student, not the seller. Ask any prospective tutor where they draw this line, and treat a vague answer as the answer.

Board materials are the second boundary. Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents are the boards' copyright. A responsible tutor references them, links to the official source and works through questions in the lesson, rather than distributing a folder of reproduced material. Your child's school has legitimate access through its own board account, which is the proper route to past material.

Both boundaries are differentiators rather than limitations in this particular market, where at least one visible provider sells assessed work outright. A tutor who teaches method and refuses to produce the artefact is doing the job that actually helps, and a parent who asks the question early will hear the difference immediately.

09

Starting science support from The Springs, and what we will say no to

  • Board, code and tier for each science, because they can differ
  • A marked paper or mock analysis before any plan is written
  • Free trial lesson producing a written diagnosis and an hour count
  • Online-only delivery, no accreditation claims, no grade promises

The sequence is short and the first two steps cost nothing. Email the examinations officer for the board, code and tier of each science, because it is common for one of the three to differ from the others. Find a recent marked paper or the school's question-level analysis of a mock, which tells a tutor more in two minutes than a parents' evening does in twenty. Pick the slot the week can hold: for most of this community that is 17:00 on a weekday or a Saturday morning, since the bus reaches the higher Springs numbers closer to 16:45.

The free trial lesson is sixty minutes of teaching on the student's own paper, not a sales call. It ends with the tutor writing down which of the three sciences is actually weakest, whether the cause is terminology, calculation or procedure, and how many lessons the diagnosis justifies. If the answer is six lessons on command words rather than a year of weekly chemistry, that is what the note will say.

Three things we will say no to. We do not send tutors to homes in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, because home tutoring is an India-only service; every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. We do not claim regulator or examination-board accreditation, because IB Gram holds none, and any provider in this market claiming board approval for its tutors is making a claim worth questioning closely. And no tutor can guarantee a grade in any science.

One more honest limit. A narrow request - a specific board and tier in a single science at a fixed half-hour - cannot always be filled from the UAE-based pool. When it cannot, we say so and offer a specialist elsewhere teaching in your Gulf Standard Time slot at the same rate, or a different hour with the right person. Putting an available but unsuitable tutor into a booked slot is the thing this page exists to argue against.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Springs

The Springs sits inside a cluster of Emirates Living communities with different school runs and different practicalities. These are the areas this page serves and what changes between them.

The Springs 1 to 5

Nearest the Al Khail Road exit, with short runs to the Emirates Hills campuses. A 16:30 science slot is realistic, which matters when two of the three sciences need separate specialists.

The Springs 6 to 10

The townhouse core, where lessons usually happen at a bedroom desk. A second screen helps more in science than in any other subject, because diagrams and data tables need to stay visible while the student writes.

The Springs 11 to 15

Last on most bus loops, so weekday slots sit at 17:30 or later. Saturday mornings carry the practical-paper work well, because that needs a longer uninterrupted block than a weekday hour.

The Meadows

Adjacent villas on the same bus contracts, with an IB campus inside the community. Households here often need IGCSE science for one child and MYP sciences for another in the same week.

The Lakes

Smaller and long-settled, tilted towards the Emirates Hills ring. Often scheduled alongside The Springs so two children can take consecutive slots with different science specialists.

The Views and The Greens

Apartments at the Sheikh Zayed Road edge, with Regent International School in the ring. Quiet space is tighter here, so a fixed protected hour matters more than a longer lesson.

Emirates Hills

The shortest school run in the cluster and the highest share of requests for separate-science Extended tier support rather than double-award help.

Dubai Marina, JLT and Al Sufouh

Along Sheikh Zayed Road and home to several of the schools this community actually attends. Lessons are unaffected by a move between these areas, because nothing depends on the address.

Email the examinations officer for the board, code and tier of each science. It is common for a student to sit Extended in biology and Core in physics, and a plan written without that detail will misallocate the hours from the start.

  2. 02

    Bring the marked evidence

A recent paper with marks on it, or the school's question-level analysis of a mock. This is what separates a diagnosis from a conversation, and it usually shows that one of the three sciences is the problem rather than all of them.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson

Sixty minutes of real teaching on the student's own paper with a specialist in the weakest science. The tutor writes down whether the cause is terminology, calculation or procedure, and how many lessons that justifies.

  4. 04

Choose the narrowest plan that works

Usually one science and one slot, or a cross-cutting block on command words and the practical paper. Three simultaneous weekly slots is a crisis response, not a default, and should be chosen deliberately if at all.

  5. 05

    Review at four lessons

Check the written answers against the plan: are the extended answers scoring, are the calculations set out, are units appearing. Families continue, switch specialist, or stop. A short block that ends because the habit changed is the intended outcome.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One specialist per science

Biology, chemistry and physics are matched separately, because the three reward different habits and few tutors are equally strong across all of them. A tutor who claims all three to the same depth is describing availability rather than specialism.

The specification comes before the lesson plan

Code, tier and how practical skills are assessed on that board are established before a tutor is matched. Cambridge and Pearson handle the practical component differently, and a plan built on the wrong assumption wastes the first month.

Command words taught explicitly

Extended-answer structure keyed to the command word is in every plan, because it is where the most recoverable marks sit and it is the component classrooms cover least. The gain shows across all three sciences at once.

Practical work taught, not skipped

Method, variable control, tabulation, graph conventions and sources of error are taught using real data sets and real apparatus photographs. These are the marks the practical component actually awards, and they do not need a laboratory.

Rates quoted as the market, with sources

Every dirham band on this page names the provider or rate table that published it and the month it was read. None is presented as IB Gram's price, so any quote you receive can be measured against the same numbers.

Coverage limits said out loud

When a specific board, tier and science at a fixed hour cannot be filled from the UAE pool, we say so and offer a specialist elsewhere at the same rate. No competitor examined in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Springs: your questions answered

Is there an IGCSE science tutor near The Springs who actually knows my child's specification?+

There are science tutors available to this community, and the honest caution is that a science degree does not mean somebody has read the current syllabus. Ten minutes of specific questions will tell you. Ask which code and tier your child is entered for and what the tier changes, how practical skills are assessed on that specification, and what separates a describe answer from an explain answer in the mark scheme. Specific answers come back in seconds. A general reply about building foundations is itself the information you were looking for. Lessons are delivered online one-to-one.

Should we hire one tutor for all three sciences or a specialist for each?+

It depends on the route. A student on Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson Double Award 4SD0 is better served by one tutor who knows exactly what the double award covers, because three separate-science specialists will teach content the examination never asks for. A student taking three separate sciences is better served by specialists, but rarely needs all three at once: diagnose all three, tutor the weakest for a block, then reassess. The exception is a cross-cutting block on command words and the practical paper, which benefits all three together.

Why does my child explain biology perfectly at home and score badly in tests?+

Almost certainly terminology. Biology mark schemes accept precise words and reject everyday equivalents, so a student who says the water moves from thick to thin has described osmosis correctly and earned nothing. The second cause is incompleteness: a four-mark question needs four distinct points, and students often write one idea three ways because it feels like more writing. Both are fixed by marking the student's own written answers against real criteria, word by word, which usually changes the habit within three or four lessons.

My child understands chemistry but loses the calculations. What is going on?+

Quantitative chemistry is marked on setting-out as much as on the answer. Moles, molar masses, concentrations, reacting masses, percentage yield and titration questions award method marks line by line, so a student who writes one line and a wrong number loses everything while a student who sets out each step loses one mark. Add the symbolic side - balanced equations with state symbols, ionic equations, formulae for compound ions - and you have most of the gap. It is drilling work rather than conceptual work, which is why it responds quickly.

Is physics the fastest science to improve with tutoring?+

Often, yes, because most physics mark loss is procedural rather than conceptual. Selecting the right relationship, rearranging it before substituting, converting units at the start rather than the end, and calculating a gradient from the line of best fit rather than from two data points. Those are habits, and habits change with marked practice in a fixed working format. Content gaps do exist, usually in electricity, waves and momentum, and electricity in particular is usually a circuit-reading problem that a redrawing technique solves.

How are practical skills assessed if my child never does a practical with the tutor?+

The components reward method, not manual dexterity. Cambridge sets either a practical test or a written alternative to practical; Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Both ask about variable control, apparatus choice, tabulating results with units in the headings, plotting and interpreting graphs, and identifying sources of error. All of that is taught better with a real examiner's apparatus photograph on screen and a flawed data set to criticise than with a textbook, and an online lesson keeps every annotated diagram for revision.

What does a command word have to do with my child's science grade?+

A great deal, and it is the cheapest mark recovery available. The command word tells the student what shape the answer needs: state wants a bare fact, describe wants what happens, explain wants a causal link, suggest wants a plausible answer applied to an unfamiliar context, compare wants both sides in the same statement. Most lost extended-answer marks come from answering a different command word than the one printed. The fix is mechanical: read the word, count the marks, plan that many distinct points, include a because where one is needed.

Does Core entry in a Cambridge science limit what we can achieve?+

Yes, and it should be checked for each science separately, because it is common for a student to sit Extended in one and Core in another. Core entry makes a restricted grade range available and nothing above it, whatever the tutoring. If you are paying specialist rates in the hope of a top grade while the entry sits at Core, the entry form has already excluded that outcome. Ask the department which tier each science is entered at, what evidence that rests on, and when the final entry deadline falls.

Which IGCSE science do Emirates Living families most often ask for help with?+

Chemistry and physics arrive more often than biology, which reflects what actually goes wrong rather than which subject is hardest. Chemistry requests are usually about quantitative work, and physics requests about multi-step calculations and electricity. Biology requests come later, often after a mock, because the problem there is written expression and it is invisible until somebody marks the student's own answers properly. In many households the right first purchase turns out to be a cross-cutting block on answer-writing rather than a subject-specific one.

What does science tutoring cost for a family in The Springs?+

Published Dubai figures, read in October 2026: qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150; named specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270; budget online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 with EdFlik and AED 33 to 52 with Tutopiya; in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 500 including travel. Bestimate's monthly figures for a weekly hour are AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid, AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more in an examination year. Those are other providers' numbers, quoted so you can judge a quote.

Are three weekly science slots ever the right answer?+

Rarely, and it should be a deliberate crisis decision rather than a default. Three simultaneous slots consume three evenings in a household that also has activities and homework, and cost roughly three times a single slot - around AED 1,800 to 3,600 a month at the published mid band. The pattern that works better is sequential: diagnose all three, take the weakest for a block of six to eight lessons, then reassess. The other two frequently improve on their own once answer-writing and calculation habits change.

Can a tutor help write up my child's practical investigation?+

No, and that boundary is worth hearing before lessons start. A tutor may teach experimental method, explain variable control, show how results are tabulated, demonstrate graph conventions and give feedback on a write-up the student has produced themselves. A tutor must never write the practical record or supply results for the student to present. One provider in this market sells completed coursework outright; buying that purchases a malpractice risk that falls on your child, not on the seller.

When do we need to decide between separate sciences and a double award?+

At the Year 9 option evening, which in schools serving The Springs sits in the spring term with forms due within about a fortnight. The decision is hard to reverse: a child on double award cannot later present separate physics and chemistry grades to a department that asks for them. Ask the school how many periods a week the separate route takes and what it displaces, because in several Dubai schools it costs the second language or an arts option. Two advisory sessions at this point are better value than six months of lessons afterwards.

Do science lessons run through Ramadan and the summer break?+

Yes, with the timing moved rather than the plan. School days shorten during Ramadan and the useful window shifts later, so a 17:00 slot usually becomes 20:30 or later for the month; arranging that in advance keeps continuity instead of losing four weeks. The long summer, from late June or early July into early September, is the only uninterrupted block in a two-year course and the best time for a practical-skills block, which needs longer sessions than a weekday hour allows. Lessons continue while a family travels.

Is the person teaching my child science legally permitted to tutor in the UAE?+

They should hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, and MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time. The u.ae guidance states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so nobody should quote you an amount.

What if no specialist is free for our board, tier and science at the hour we need?+

We say so rather than filling the slot. A narrow request - Extended-tier Cambridge physics at a fixed half-hour on a Tuesday, for instance - cannot always be matched from the UAE-based pool. The options are then a specialist elsewhere teaching in your Gulf Standard Time slot at the same rate, a different hour with the right person, or an honest wait with an estimate. Putting an available but unsuitable tutor into a booked slot is exactly the outcome this page argues against, and it is also how families conclude tutoring does not work.

Ask five specific questions, then book the trial

Get the board, code and tier for each of the three sciences, because they can differ. Find a recent marked paper. Then use the ten minutes a trial call gives you: which tier and what it changes, how the practical component is assessed, what separates describe from explain, which equations that board supplies, and what the first four lessons would cover given this paper. Specific answers come back quickly from somebody who has read the specification. That is the whole verification, and it costs nothing to run.
