IB MYP Tutor in The Springs

Buying an IB MYP tutor in The Springs before understanding how the programme is assessed is the most reliable way to waste money on tutoring in Dubai. MYP grades come from four criteria marked out of eight, not from a percentage, and a tutor drilling examination technique for a course with no external examination is billing for the wrong work. IB Gram matches MYP specialists for one-to-one lessons over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial.

  • Tutors matched by MYP subject group and criterion, not by exam board
  • Every AED figure on this page credited to who published it
  • Personal Project support is supervision and feedback only

IB & IGCSE in The Springs

The money goes wrong because the assessment is unfamiliar

A Springs parent with a child in MYP 3 or MYP 4 usually arrives at tutoring from a report that is hard to read. There are letters where percentages used to be, numbers out of eight, and a final figure between 1 and 7 that nobody has explained. The instinct is to buy more lessons in the subject with the lowest number. The problem is that the lowest number is often produced by one criterion out of four, and a general weekly hour spends four lessons on content when the gap was in a specific assessed skill.

Here is the structure, because it changes what is worth paying for. Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, and each criterion is marked on a scale of 1 to 8. The four marks add to a raw total out of 32, which is converted into a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. In mathematics the criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In the sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A student can be strong in criterion A and weak in criterion B, and the report will show one grade for both.

That is why the first question is which criterion, not which subject. A student losing marks on criterion B in sciences needs to learn how to write a method with controlled variables and a testable hypothesis, which is a different job from revising the content of the unit. A student losing criterion D in mathematics needs to learn how to apply a technique to an unfamiliar real-world context and comment on the limitations of their model. Neither of those is fixed by more worked examples, and both are commonly mistaken for content weakness.

The second reason money goes wrong is timing. There is no external examination in most MYP years, so the usual exam-year logic does not apply. What does have hard deadlines is the Personal Project in MYP 5, the interdisciplinary units, and the transition at the end of MYP 5 into the Diploma or into IGCSE. Those are the three points where a small number of well-chosen hours makes a measurable difference, and they are the three that families typically address last.

Delivery is stated plainly before any figures. All UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, because home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For MYP work this matters less than parents expect and helps more than they assume: criterion-based feedback on a piece of written work happens on a shared screen, and the annotated version stays available to the student afterwards.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years, and what a tutor should be doing changes completely across them. Separating the years is how a Springs family avoids paying for the wrong kind of help at the wrong time.

MYP1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP 1 to 3

The years where habits are set and tutoring is cheapest. The useful work is learning what each criterion asks for, how to write a method, how to structure an analysis, and how to reflect in a way that earns marks rather than fills a box. Content support here is secondary to assessment literacy.

Schools serving The Springs typically run the community project in MYP 3 or MYP 4, depending on where their programme ends. Ask which year yours uses, because that project is the first piece of extended independent work a student produces and it is where process-journal habits are formed or missed.

MYP4Ages 14-15 · Year 10

MYP 4

The year the workload rises and the subject set narrows. Students begin to meet criterion tasks that resemble Diploma assessments in miniature: investigations with hypotheses, extended written analyses, and mathematical explorations in all but name. This is the cheapest point to address a weak criterion properly.

MYP 4 is also when a Springs family should start asking what happens at 16. Some students will continue into the Diploma at an IB campus in or near Emirates Living; others will move to a British-curriculum school and sit IGCSE. The two routes need different preparation, and knowing which one is likely changes the plan.

MYP5Ages 15-16 · Year 11

MYP 5

The year with real deadlines: the Personal Project with its process journal, product and report, plus any eAssessment the school offers. Support here is supervision and feedback on the student's own work, scheduled against the school's internal dates rather than anything published centrally.

Where a Dubai school offers MYP eAssessment, it combines on-screen examinations in some subject groups with ePortfolios in others. Ask your coordinator which subjects your child will sit on screen and which are portfolio-assessed, because the preparation for the two is not remotely the same.

AFTERAges 16+ · DP or IGCSE

After MYP 5

The transition year, and the point where MYP students most often need paid help. A student moving into the Diploma meets formal examinations for the first time; a student moving to IGCSE meets a content-dense two-year syllabus with tiered entry. Both gaps are closable in a summer if addressed deliberately.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, and enrolment rose six per cent during 2025-26. A Springs family's post-MYP options are wider than they were for an older sibling, so the destination should be checked rather than assumed.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the MYP subject groups Emirates Living families ask about, with the four criteria that actually produce the grade. Testing a prospective tutor against the right four is the fastest way to tell whether they know the programme.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is where most marks are lost, because pattern investigation and generalisation are rarely taught as a separate skill. Criterion D needs modelling and a comment on limitations.

Sciences

MYP 1-5, integrated or discrete

Criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B demands a testable hypothesis with controlled variables; criterion C demands data processing with evaluated conclusions. Both are writing skills as much as scientific ones.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria: analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students who read well still lose criterion A marks for summarising rather than analysing, and criterion B marks for an essay that has paragraphs but no structural argument.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Criteria: listening, reading, speaking and writing, with a phase rather than a year group determining the expectation. A Springs student can be in phase 2 French and phase 4 Arabic in the same timetable, and a tutor needs the phase before anything else.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Criterion D is the one that separates grades: evaluating sources, recognising bias and weighing competing interpretations rather than reciting content.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria: inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The most process-heavy subject in the programme and the one where a well-kept design folder earns marks that a good final product cannot recover on its own.

Arts

MYP 1-5, visual and performing

Criteria: knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The written and reflective components carry real weight, which surprises families who think of arts as a practical subject and plan accordingly.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Criteria: knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Two of the four are written, so a capable athlete can hold a middling grade while the physical performance is strong.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed with their own criteria around disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. Students often treat an interdisciplinary task as two subjects stapled together, which is exactly what the synthesis criterion is designed not to reward.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed against planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight, with a process journal, a product or outcome and a report. A tutor may supervise, question and give feedback; the project and the writing must be entirely the student's own.

Approaches to learning skills

MYP 1-5

Communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills, taught across subjects rather than in one. Self-management and research are the two that most often explain a bright student's inconsistent criterion marks, and both are teachable in a handful of sessions.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

MYP years, as required in Dubai

Dubai private schools must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These sit alongside the MYP subjects and have their own ministry-set content expectations.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of MYP support, which differ in what they target rather than in how good the teaching is. Picking by target rather than by budget is what keeps the spend proportionate.

One criterion, a short block

Four to six lessons on a single weak criterion: writing a method with controlled variables, structuring an analytical essay, or investigating and generalising a pattern. The cheapest effective purchase in the programme, and the one most families do not know to ask for.

  • One named criterion, with the school's own task as the material
  • Total cost agreed before the first lesson
  • Ends with a marked piece of the student's own work
  • Transfers to every future task assessed on that criterion

Weekly subject slot

Sixty minutes a week in one subject group, keeping pace with units and building criterion literacy alongside content. Suits a student who is behind across a subject rather than weak on one skill, and works best started in MYP 3 or 4 rather than MYP 5.

  • Fixed day and time held for the term
  • Follows the school's unit sequence
  • Written note after each lesson
  • Reviewed at four lessons against a named target

Personal Project supervision

Three to five sessions across MYP 5: scoping a project that can actually be completed, keeping a process journal that evidences planning, and reviewing the student's own report against the criteria. Supervision and questioning, never production.

  • Scoping before the school's internal deadline
  • Process-journal habits set early, not reconstructed late
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's draft
  • No part of the project or report written by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Springs

01

Four criteria, not a percentage: what you are actually paying to improve

The single most useful thing a Springs parent can do before spending anything is find out which criterion is low. Schools publish criterion marks in their reporting systems, usually as four numbers out of eight per subject, and those four numbers tell you what kind of help is needed. Two students with the same grade 4 in sciences can need completely different tutoring: one is weak on knowing and understanding, which is content, and the other is weak on inquiring and designing, which is scientific writing.

The criteria are not interchangeable between subject groups, and this is where unqualified tutors reveal themselves quickly. Mathematics has knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Sciences has knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Language and literature has analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Somebody who refers to criteria generically, without naming the four for your child's subject, has not worked inside the programme.

The second thing the criterion marks tell you is whether the problem is general or specific. A student with three sixes and a two has one fixable skill gap. A student with four fours is coasting across the subject and needs a different conversation, probably about workload and self-management rather than about content. The first is a four-lesson block; the second is a term.

Ask the subject teacher one additional question: which task produced the low criterion mark, and what did the descriptor at the next level up require that the student did not do. Teachers can answer that in a sentence, and it converts a vague request for a tutor into a specific, short, measurable piece of work.

From 32 raw marks to a grade of 7: reading the report properly

Four criteria at eight marks each give a raw total out of 32, and that total converts to a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. The conversion is the part that confuses parents arriving from a percentage system, because the bands are uneven and a single raw mark can move a grade at a boundary. A student on 23 and a student on 19 can both be reported as the same grade, and a student on 24 is a grade higher than the one on 23.

What follows from that is a piece of practical advice worth more than most tutoring. If a child sits one raw mark below a boundary, the useful intervention is not a term of general lessons; it is finding which criterion is furthest from its next descriptor and doing four lessons of marked practice on that one. If a child sits in the middle of a band, a single mark changes nothing, and the honest answer may be that tutoring is not the priority this term.

The second thing to understand is that criterion marks are not cumulative averages in the way a percentage is. Teachers judge against descriptors on specific tasks, and a best-fit judgement across the year is what lands on the report. A single poor task early in a unit does not permanently depress a grade, which is reassuring, and a single good one does not lift it, which is less so.

Finally, the report tells you nothing about Diploma readiness on its own. A grade 6 in MYP mathematics does not translate into a prediction for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, because the two are assessed on entirely different things. That judgement belongs to the subject teacher and the Diploma coordinator, and it is worth asking for explicitly in MYP 5 rather than inferring.

What MYP support costs around Emirates Living, and how to verify it yourself

Everything in this section can be checked by a parent in twenty minutes, which is the point. The figures below are published on providers' own pages and in a public Dubai rate table, and the reason to show the sources is that a quote you cannot benchmark is a quote you cannot judge. Three of the six most visible providers in this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars.

The published positions, read in October 2026: EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, which at that level generally means a university student working from a textbook. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, which sits inside the AED 150 to 300 band for qualified subject tutors teaching online. TutorChase lists AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai table shows AED 200 to 450 and above for IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 500 including travel, with Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500.

For a household budget the monthly figures matter more. Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour arrangement at AED 240 to 600 a month in the budget band, AED 600 to 1,200 in the mid band, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year work. Monthly packages visible in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Set that against a school fee position KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026, when it stated there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for 2026-27 under the emirate's AED 1.5 billion incentives package.

MYP sits awkwardly in these bands because almost nobody prices it separately. Providers advertise IB rates, and those rates are built around Diploma demand. A family paying Diploma specialist rates for MYP 2 mathematics is paying for scarcity that does not apply. The questions worth asking are whether the tutor has taught MYP specifically, whether the rate differs from the Diploma rate, and what the four criteria are for the subject group in question.

The Personal Project: supervision, a process journal, and a hard line

  • Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, each out of eight
  • Most lost marks are in the process journal, not the product
  • Three early sessions beat ten late ones
  • A tutor supervises and questions; the student writes every word

The Personal Project in MYP 5 is the first substantial independent piece a student produces, and it is assessed against planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight. The deliverables are a process journal kept throughout, a product or outcome, and a report. Most of the marks that get lost are lost in the journal, because students treat it as paperwork to be assembled near the deadline rather than as the evidence of the process the criteria are actually marking.

Where a tutor earns their fee is at the start. A project scoped too widely cannot be completed; a project scoped too narrowly cannot evidence planning. Three sessions in the early weeks - choosing something achievable, setting a realistic goal with criteria for success, and establishing a journal habit of short dated entries - do more for the final marks than ten sessions of rescue work in the final month. This is the clearest value in the whole MYP budget and the one families most often skip.

The line is absolute and worth hearing before anybody starts. A tutor may discuss the choice of project, ask the questions a good supervisor asks, explain what each criterion rewards, and give feedback on a journal or report the student has written. A tutor must never write the report, produce the product, or edit the student's writing to completion. Providers in this market sell finished coursework at four-figure prices; buying that purchases an academic-honesty problem that attaches to the student.

The school's own internal deadline is the date that governs everything, not anything published centrally, because the school needs time to supervise, authenticate and mark. Ask for that date in the first weeks of MYP 5 and build the plan backwards from it.

05

The fork at the end of MYP 5, and what each route costs to prepare for

Every MYP 5 student in Emirates Living is heading somewhere, and the three realistic destinations need different preparation. Continuing into the Diploma at an IB campus means meeting formal written examinations for the first time, plus internal assessments with their own criteria. Moving to a British-curriculum school means starting a two-year IGCSE course with tiered entry and content density that MYP does not match. Moving abroad means whichever system the destination uses, usually with a mid-year entry point.

The Diploma gap is mostly about examination conditions and procedural fluency. MYP assesses understanding through tasks; the Diploma assesses it under timed conditions with no second attempt. A student who has never sat a two-hour paper will lose marks to pacing in the first term of DP1 regardless of ability. Six to ten summer lessons on timed practice and on procedural accuracy close most of that, and in mathematics specifically the algebraic fluency gap is the single most common one.

The IGCSE gap is about volume and specificity. Cambridge and Pearson syllabuses name content precisely, mark schemes reward particular wording, and tier entry caps the grade available. A student arriving from MYP has strong investigative skills and may never have memorised a defined list. The preparation is content mapping - establishing what the syllabus requires that the MYP units did not cover - and it is best done before the first term rather than discovered in it.

The table sets out the three routes with the gap and the typical support shape. Nobody needs tutoring to make a transition successfully; what tutoring buys is a shorter adjustment period, which in a two-year course is worth real marks.

Where MYP money is wasted in a Springs household

  • Past-paper drilling is a Diploma product, not an MYP one
  • Ask whether the quoted rate is a Diploma rate applied to middle years
  • Self-management problems need routine, not a subject specialist
  • Buy blocks with a named criterion and a stated endpoint

The first and biggest waste is buying examination technique for a programme that mostly does not examine. A tutor who arrives with past papers and timed drills for an MYP 3 student is selling a Diploma product. There is a place for timed practice - the transition year, and any subject the school assesses on screen through eAssessment - but for most MYP years the marks come from criterion-based tasks, and preparing for the wrong thing is expensive.

The second is paying Diploma specialist rates for middle-years content. Published IB rates in this market are built around Diploma scarcity: Unitors lists IB from AED 200, Bestimate's specialist band runs AED 200 to 450 and above. MYP 2 mathematics does not require that scarcity. Ask whether the rate quoted is the provider's Diploma rate applied without adjustment, and ask what the tutor has actually taught at MYP level.

The third is general homework supervision sold as subject tutoring. A good number of MYP referrals in this community are really about self-management: work not started, deadlines missed, a process journal not kept. That is a real problem with a real solution, and the solution is cheaper than a subject specialist. Conflating the two means paying specialist rates for something a structured routine would fix.

The fourth is the open-ended weekly arrangement with no stated target. In a programme without external examinations there is no natural end point, so a weekly MYP slot can run for two years without anybody asking what changed. A block with a named criterion, a number of lessons and a written endpoint is the version a family can audit, and in MYP it is almost always the right structure.

07

Interdisciplinary units, service as action, and the Dubai-mandated subjects alongside them

  • Interdisciplinary units reward genuine synthesis, not two subjects side by side
  • Service as action is a programme requirement, not a tutored product
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies are mandatory in Dubai private schools
  • Mandatory-subject content cannot be substituted without Ministry permission

Three parts of the programme sit outside the ordinary subject timetable and generate questions from Springs parents every year. Interdisciplinary units are assessed with their own criteria around disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, and students commonly treat them as two subjects stapled together. The synthesis criterion is specifically designed not to reward that, so the teachable skill is building a single argument that genuinely needs both disciplines.

Service as action is a programme requirement rather than a graded subject, and it is not something a tutor should be involved in beyond helping a student reflect on it in writing where the school asks for that. Any provider offering to arrange or document service for a student has misunderstood what it is for.

The mandated UAE subjects are the third. Dubai private schools must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, and the guidance advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least twenty-five minutes.

One constraint follows from that and it shapes how support can honestly be described. For the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Tutoring in these subjects therefore works with the school's own material and the ministry-set content, not with a parallel curriculum, and KHDA also requires that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic in schools hold appropriate approval to teach them.

08

Starting MYP support from The Springs, and what we say before you pay

  • Write down the four criterion marks before contacting anyone
  • Ask the teacher which task caused the low mark and what the next descriptor required
  • Free trial lesson producing a written diagnosis and an hour count
  • Online-only delivery, no accreditation claims, no authorship of assessed work

The first step costs nothing and saves the most. Open the school's reporting system and write down the four criterion marks for the subject in question, then ask the subject teacher which task produced the low one and what the next descriptor required. With those two pieces of information a tutor can name the first four lessons before anybody pays, and a parent can tell whether a provider actually understands the programme from how they react to it.

Then the practical arrangement. Pick the slot the week can genuinely hold: for a middle-years student in this community that usually means 16:15 to 17:00 on a weekday, because the bus reaches the higher Springs numbers closer to 16:45 and a 19:00 lesson for an MYP 2 student produces a tired hour and a cancellation the following week. Personal Project supervision works better on a Saturday morning, which gives a longer uninterrupted block.

The free trial lesson is sixty minutes of teaching on the student's own work rather than a sales conversation. It ends with the tutor writing down which criterion is the gap, whether the cause is content, skill or self-management, and how many lessons that justifies. If the honest answer is four lessons rather than a term, that is what the note will say, and a four-lesson block that ends because the skill changed is the outcome this is built to produce.

Three limits stated before payment. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not sell home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, because home tutoring is an India-only service. IB Gram holds no accreditation from the IB or from any UAE regulator and does not present itself as holding one; a provider in this market claiming board approval for its tutors is making a claim worth questioning closely. And on the Personal Project the line is absolute: a tutor must never write the report.

Nearby areas we cover around The Springs

Emirates Living is a cluster, and the scheduling realities differ between its parts. These are the areas this page serves and what changes between them for a middle-years student.

The Springs 1 to 5

Closest to the Al Khail Road exit with short runs to the Emirates Hills campuses. A 16:15 slot works for an MYP 2 or 3 student here, which keeps the evening clear for homework and an activity.

The Springs 6 to 10

The townhouse core. Middle-years students usually work at a bedroom desk, and for criterion feedback on written work a second screen is worth more than a longer lesson.

The Springs 11 to 15

Last on most bus loops, pushing weekday slots to 17:00 or later. Saturday mornings carry Personal Project supervision better, because that work needs a longer uninterrupted block.

The Meadows

Adjacent villas with an IB campus inside the community, so a high share of this cluster's MYP students are on one roll and follow one internal calendar for projects and reports.

The Lakes

Smaller and long-settled, tilted towards the Emirates Hills ring. Often scheduled alongside The Springs when siblings in different programmes need consecutive slots.

The Views and The Greens

Apartments at the Sheikh Zayed Road edge with Regent International School in the ring. Quiet space is tighter, so a fixed protected hour matters more than lesson length.

Emirates Hills

Shortest school run in the cluster, and the area where requests most often concern the end-of-MYP-5 transition into the Diploma rather than current criterion marks.

Dubai Marina, JLT and Al Sufouh

Along Sheikh Zayed Road, where several of the schools this community attends are located. A move between these areas changes nothing about a lesson schedule.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Collect the criterion marks

Four numbers out of eight per subject, from the school's reporting system. This is the document that tells a tutor what kind of help is needed, and without it a plan is guesswork dressed as a schedule.

  2. 02

    Ask the teacher two questions

Which task produced the low criterion mark, and what did the descriptor at the next level require that the student did not do. Subject teachers answer both in a sentence, and the answers convert a vague request into a short measurable piece of work.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson

Sixty minutes with a subject-group specialist, working on the student's own task. The tutor writes down which criterion is the gap, whether the cause is content, skill or self-management, and how many lessons the diagnosis justifies.

  4. 04

Pick the narrowest plan that fits

Usually a four-to-six-lesson block on one criterion, or a weekly slot where the whole subject is behind. Personal Project supervision is scheduled separately against the school's internal deadline, not alongside subject work.

  5. 05

    Review against the marked work

At four lessons, compare a new piece of the student's work against the criterion descriptors. Families continue, change tutor or stop. Stopping because the skill transferred is the intended result, not a lost sale.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by subject group and criterion

A tutor is matched to the four criteria your child's subject is actually assessed on, not to a generic IB badge. Somebody who cannot name the four for that subject group has not worked inside the programme, whatever their degree says.

MYP is not priced as the Diploma

Published IB rates in this market are built around Diploma scarcity. We ask what the student is actually studying before quoting, because middle-years mathematics does not require Higher Level Diploma specialism and should not be billed as though it did.

Blocks with a named criterion and an endpoint

In a programme with no external examination there is no natural stopping point, so support is sold wherever possible as a stated criterion, a stated number of lessons and a written handover. That makes the spend auditable rather than habitual.

Personal Project supervised, never produced

Scoping, questioning, process-journal habits and criterion feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor must never write the report or make the product, which is the difference between supervision and a malpractice risk.

Every figure attributed and checkable

Each dirham band names the provider or rate table that published it and the month it was read, so a parent can verify the benchmark in twenty minutes and judge any quote, including ours, against it.

Coverage limits said out loud

When a particular subject group at a particular hour cannot be filled from the UAE pool, we say so and offer a specialist elsewhere at the same rate. No competitor examined in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Springs: your questions answered

What do the four letters on my child's MYP report actually mean?+

They are the four assessment criteria for that subject, each marked from 1 to 8. The four marks add to a raw total out of 32, which converts to the reported grade of 1 to 7 using published boundaries. The criteria differ by subject group: mathematics uses knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts, while sciences uses knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Which one is low tells you what kind of tutoring is needed, and often that it should be short.

Why does my child get a good grade in one MYP subject and a poor one in another with the same effort?+

Because the criteria reward different things. A student who is strong on content will score well where criterion A carries the weight and poorly where the subject leans on process criteria, such as inquiring and designing in sciences or investigating patterns in mathematics. Those process criteria are rarely taught as separate skills, so a capable student can lose a quarter of the available marks on something nobody has explicitly shown them. Four lessons of marked practice on the specific criterion usually transfers to every future task assessed the same way.

Is it worth paying for MYP tutoring when there are no public exams?+

It is, for three specific things, and often not worth it for general subject support. The three are a diagnosed weak criterion, the Personal Project in MYP 5, and the transition at the end of MYP 5 into the Diploma or IGCSE. Those have clear targets and short timeframes. A rolling weekly slot in a programme with no external examination has no natural end point, which is how a Springs household ends up two years into an arrangement nobody has reviewed. Buy blocks with stated endpoints.

How much should MYP tutoring cost compared with Diploma tutoring in Dubai?+

Published rates in this market are built around Diploma demand, so check what you are being charged for. Unitors lists IB from AED 200 an hour and Bestimate's Dubai specialist band runs AED 200 to 450 and above; qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300 generally. Middle-years content does not require Higher Level Diploma specialism, so ask whether the quoted figure is simply the provider's IB rate applied without adjustment, and ask what the tutor has actually taught at MYP level. Those are other providers' published figures, read in October 2026.

My child is one mark below a grade boundary. What should we actually do?+

Find which criterion is furthest from its next descriptor and do four lessons of marked practice on that one. Because the raw total out of 32 converts to a grade in uneven bands, a single mark genuinely matters at a boundary and genuinely does not in the middle of a band. Ask the subject teacher which criterion has the most headroom and what the next descriptor requires. That is a cheap, short, measurable piece of work, and it is a much better purchase than a term of general lessons in the subject.

How does the Personal Project get marked, and where do students lose marks?+

It is assessed against planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight, with a process journal, a product or outcome, and a report. Most lost marks sit in the journal, because students treat it as paperwork to assemble near the deadline instead of as the evidence of process that the criteria are actually marking. Short dated entries kept weekly from the start score far better than a reconstructed document. Scoping the project realistically in the early weeks is the other decisive factor.

Can a tutor help my child finish the Personal Project if the deadline is close?+

A tutor can supervise, ask the questions a good supervisor asks, explain what each criterion rewards and give feedback on a journal or report the student has written. A tutor must never write the report, produce the product or edit the writing to completion. If the deadline is close and little exists, the honest work is helping the student salvage and document what they actually did, not manufacturing a process that did not happen. Providers selling finished coursework are selling your child an academic-honesty problem.

What should a Springs family do in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1?+

Six to ten lessons on timed conditions and procedural accuracy, which is the real gap rather than content. MYP assesses understanding through tasks; the Diploma assesses it under timed conditions with no second attempt, and a student who has never sat a two-hour paper loses marks to pacing in the first term regardless of ability. In mathematics specifically, algebraic fluency is the commonest gap. This is the cheapest useful intervention in the whole transition and almost nobody buys it.

My child is moving from MYP 5 to a British school for IGCSE. What changes?+

Content specificity and tier. Cambridge and Pearson syllabuses name required content precisely, mark schemes reward particular wording, and entry tier caps the grade available. A student arriving from MYP usually has strong investigative skills and little experience of memorising a defined list. The right preparation is content mapping before the first term: establishing what the new syllabus requires that the MYP units did not cover. Done early it is a short piece of work; discovered in November of Year 10 it is a term's catch-up.

What are interdisciplinary units and why does my child score badly on them?+

They are units assessed with their own criteria around disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, and the commonest error is treating the task as two subjects stapled together. The synthesis criterion is specifically designed not to reward that. What earns marks is a single argument that genuinely requires both disciplines, where neither alone would answer the question. It is a teachable structure and usually takes two or three sessions, because the difficulty is in the framing rather than in either subject's content.

Does my child still take Arabic and Islamic Education in the MYP?+

In a Dubai private school, yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory regardless of the licensed international curriculum. KHDA's guidance requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit.

Can we get tutoring in the mandatory UAE subjects alongside the MYP ones?+

Support is possible, with one real constraint worth knowing. For the mandatory subjects, KHDA's guidance states that using any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Tutoring therefore works with the school's own material and the ministry-set content rather than a parallel curriculum. KHDA also requires that school teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate approval to teach those subjects, which is a school-level requirement rather than something a private tutor can claim.

Is a weekly MYP slot or a short block better value?+

A short block, in most cases. MYP has no external examination in most years, so a weekly arrangement has no natural stopping point and tends to renew by default. A block built around one named criterion, with a stated number of lessons and a written handover at the end, is auditable: you can see what changed. A weekly slot is the right answer where the student is genuinely behind across a whole subject rather than weak on one assessed skill, and even then it should carry a review date.

Do MYP lessons continue during Ramadan and the long summer?+

Yes, with the hour moved rather than the plan changed. School days shorten during Ramadan and the useful window shifts later, so a 16:30 slot typically becomes an evening one for the month; families who arrange that in advance keep continuity. The long summer break, from late June or early July into early September, is the right time for transition work between MYP 5 and whatever follows, because it is the only uninterrupted block available. Lessons continue while a family travels, since everything runs over video.

Does the person tutoring an MYP student in Dubai need a licence?+

They need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, with MoHRE's service page listing a two-working-day completion time. The u.ae guidance states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no fine schedule is published nobody should quote you an amount.

What if no MYP specialist is free in the subject and hour we need?+

We tell you. A narrow request - MYP design, or a specific language acquisition phase, at a fixed half-hour - cannot always be filled from the UAE-based pool. The options are then a specialist elsewhere teaching in your Gulf Standard Time slot at the same rate, a different hour with the right person, or an honest wait with an estimate. Filling the slot with somebody who cannot name the four criteria for that subject group is how families conclude that MYP tutoring does not work.

Find the criterion first, then decide what to buy

Before comparing rates, open the reporting system and write down the four criterion marks for the subject that worries you. Ask the teacher which task produced the low one and what the next descriptor required. With those two answers, a specialist can name the first four lessons and you can judge whether a provider actually knows the programme from how they respond. Then take the free trial lesson. Most Springs families who work in that order discover they need a short block rather than a year of weekly sessions.
