IGCSE Science Tutor in Jumeirah Islands

Hiring an IGCSE science tutor in Jumeirah Islands goes wrong for one reason more than any other: nobody established what the child is actually entered for. Separate or combined award, which board per science, which tier, and how the practical is assessed. This page lists the seven facts to get from your school, shows how to test a tutor on them, and explains how we deliver lessons.

  • Seven facts from your school that decide what a tutor should teach
  • A way to test science expertise without being a scientist

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Islands

Nobody can teach a science entry they have not identified

There is no single IGCSE science qualification, and that is where most wasted spending in this market begins. Your child may be entered for three separate sciences with three syllabus codes and three sets of papers, or for a coordinated double award, or for a combined single award covering all three with reduced content. The tutor's job changes completely between those.

Then the board. Cambridge IGCSE biology, chemistry and physics are 0610, 0620 and 0625; the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE equivalents are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Content overlaps heavily and assessment does not, and past papers are not interchangeable. A tutor working from the wrong set teaches competently and moves nothing, which parents typically discover after a term.

Then the tier, where a science subject is tiered. Core and Extended in Cambridge, Foundation and Higher in some Pearson subjects. The tier does more than cap a grade: it removes content, and the removed content is disproportionately what post-16 science courses assume a student has met. Teaching the wrong tier wastes the hour in one direction or leaves the student under-prepared in the other.

Then the practical route, which almost nobody asks about until it is late. Some candidates sit a practical examination in a laboratory; others sit a written alternative-to-practical paper testing the same skills on paper. Both assess method writing, variables, instrument precision, tabulation, graphing and criticising a method, and the preparation differs between them more than the shared skill list suggests.

And then the question only a parent can answer: which of the three sciences is actually failing? Families say science. Marked papers usually say that one subject is secure, one has a content gap and one has a technique problem. Those are three different jobs, needing different responses over different numbers of weeks, and an hour split across all three completes none of them and marks no paper in any of them.

Two further facts belong in the first conversation. The series: UAE Cambridge candidates sit June and November, Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and the February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only. And the timetable: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own version, and states it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong one. The school holds the version that applies.

IB Gram matches a tutor briefed on that exact entry and teaches live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and with no school or tuition centre inside the Jumeirah Islands gates, online removes a journey from the day rather than adding one.

At a glance

  • Separate, coordinated and combined awards are different courses
  • Cambridge and Pearson science papers are not interchangeable
  • The tier removes content as well as capping the grade
  • Ask which practical route your child's entry uses
  • Lessons are live online; there is no UAE home-visit option

Science support around these gates arrives at four points, and what counts as expertise differs at each.

LSECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower Secondary science

No external code yet, so expertise here is about habits: writing a method someone else could repeat, identifying and controlling variables, drawing a graph with labelled axes and a sensible scale, and explaining rather than describing. Content is recoverable later; these habits are not.

Several Dubai schools fix science tiering and the separate-versus-combined route on Year 9 evidence. A tutor who tells you that this is the year to act is advising against their own longer-term interest, which makes it worth hearing.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences

Biology, chemistry and physics as three qualifications, each with its own papers and practical assessment route. The standard route towards A Level sciences or the Diploma's Higher Level sciences, and the heavier of the two options in workload terms.

UAE candidates sit Cambridge's June and November series or Pearson's May/June and November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong zone's timetable.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined and coordinated science

All three sciences as one or two qualifications with reduced content. Sometimes a judgement about the student and sometimes a timetable constraint. The papers still demand the same quality of explanation, which students underestimate because the content is lighter.

Whether a combined award supports a science at A Level or at Higher Level in the Diploma is set by the receiving school rather than by the board. That is a Year 10 question to ask in writing, not a post-results discovery.

NEXTAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Sciences after sixteen

A Level sciences or the IB Diploma's sciences at Higher or Standard Level. Both assume independent laboratory planning, uncertainty handling and explanation of mechanism rather than reporting of outcome, none of which a strong IGCSE grade guarantees.

Several schools near these gates offer each route. A short bridging block in the summer after Year 11 is the best-timed science tutoring available to a family here and almost nobody buys it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a specialist should be able to say about each area, and the question that tests it. These are the answers to listen for rather than a list of topics.

Physics: electricity and circuits

Core and Extended

A specialist names this as the topic usually rebuilt rather than revised, because students learn the relationships without a model of what a circuit does. They will say it takes about three sessions and that the work runs from the physical situation towards the calculation rather than the reverse.

Physics: forces, moments and motion

Core and Extended

A specialist says moments questions reward drawing the situation and marking distances from the pivot, and that students working from the formula alone fail anything non-standard. Motion graph interpretation is the other recurring loss and responds to practice rather than teaching.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

Extended emphasis

A specialist identifies reliability rather than comprehension as the problem and prescribes one fixed layout with units at every step. They will say two or three sessions, and that the same discipline then carries into energetics and any calculation-heavy question.

Chemistry: qualitative analysis and separation

Core and Extended

A specialist calls these the fastest marks in the whole science programme, because the tests and observations are finite and students drop them only through never having been drilled systematically. One or two sessions, and measurable immediately.

Chemistry: bonding and structure

Core and Extended

A specialist says explanation marks are lost when a student states a property without connecting it to the bonding that causes it, which is what the question is asking for. It is answer construction against real mark schemes rather than more content.

Biology: precision of written answers

Core and Extended

A specialist names this before content, every time, and can give the example: the scheme wants a named variable and a direction where students write that something improved. Examiner reports repeat it each series, and it takes three or four sessions to shift.

Biology: transport, respiration and photosynthesis

Core and Extended

A specialist points at osmosis and water potential language as the place precision matters most, and notes that students who learn the processes as narratives rather than mechanisms lose the explanation marks while appearing to know the topic.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

Core and Extended

A specialist says genetic diagrams score only when laid out fully with gametes shown, and that partial diagrams score partially. A one-session procedural fix, and a reliable source of recovered marks that no amount of general revision would find.

Practical skills across all three

Core and Extended

A specialist asks which practical route applies before planning anything, then describes the same list for either: repeatable method, variables, instrument precision, tabulation with units in headings, sensible scales, line of best fit, and criticising a method rather than reporting success.

Command terms and exam conduct

All tiers

A specialist distinguishes state, describe, explain, suggest and compare as different answer shapes, and adds showing working, time management and answering the question asked. They will call these the cheapest marks in science, and they are rarely taught because they look too obvious.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways science support is used from these gates, all delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

One science, chosen from three marked papers

Collect one marked paper per science, then pick the single subject that most affects sixth-form options or has the clearest fixable problem, and run it properly for a term. One hour covering three sciences produces three partial interventions and no completed piece of work in any of them.

  • Chosen from marked evidence, not from a feeling
  • Briefed on the exact code and tier for that science
  • One fixed weekday evening, same tutor
  • Short written note after each session

Practical skills block

Four to six sessions on the skills examined whichever practical route applies: writing a repeatable method, controlling variables, reading instruments to appropriate precision, tabulating with units in headings, plotting with a sensible scale, and criticising a method. Marks in all three sciences from one block.

  • Targeted at the laboratory or written practical route
  • Transfers across biology, chemistry and physics
  • Graph and table conventions taught explicitly
  • A defined number of sessions with an end point

Command-term and conduct block

Two or three sessions on the answer shapes the mark schemes actually want, plus showing working, time management and answering the question asked rather than the one revised. The cheapest marks in science and, in biology especially, the ones that matter most.

  • Worked from real mark schemes, not from notes
  • State, describe, explain and suggest taught separately
  • Applies across all three sciences at once
  • Tested on a timed paper afterwards

Seven facts to get from the exams officer

This is one email and it is the most valuable thing you can do before spending anything. Without these, a tutor can only teach science in general, which is rarely the problem. With them, the work becomes specific enough to plan and to evaluate.

One: the award. Three separate sciences, a coordinated double award, or a combined single award. Two: the syllabus code per science, because departments within one school sometimes use different boards. Three: the tier per science, where the subject is tiered. Four: the practical assessment route, laboratory or written alternative.

Five: the series your child is entered for, which for a UAE Cambridge candidate is June or November, and for Pearson May/June or November. Six: any internal coursework or controlled-assessment deadlines, which the school sets and which arrive without warning. Seven: the zone-specific timetable, which the school holds and which Cambridge says must be the correct version for the centre's zone.

A tutor given all seven can tell you in the first session which past papers apply, what depth to teach, how the practical will be examined and when the work has to be done by. A tutor given only the year group and the word science is going to guess, and the guess will usually be the course they know best rather than the one your child sits.

The table sets out each fact with what it changes and the cost of not asking. None of these questions is unusual and an exams officer answers all seven in a single reply.

How to test a science tutor without being a scientist

You do not need subject knowledge for this. The test is whether a tutor asks the right questions and names specific failures rather than general ones, and both are audible in ten minutes. Run it in the trial session, before price comes up.

The opening signal is what they ask you for. A specialist wants the award, the codes, the tiers, the practical route and a marked paper per science. A general tutor asks for the year group and the topic list. That difference tells you what the next term would look like before any teaching has happened.

The second signal is how they talk about biology. If a tutor says biology needs more revision, they have not taught it recently. If they say biology marks are lost to precision of language, and give the example of a named variable and a direction where the student wrote that something improved, they have read mark schemes.

The third is whether they ask about the practical route before planning anything. A written alternative-to-practical paper is not theory, and a student who has never been required to criticise a method on paper performs badly on it whatever their content knowledge. A tutor who does not raise this has not prepared candidates for it.

The fourth is the three-sciences question. Ask whether you should tutor all three. A specialist says no, explains that marked papers usually show three different problems, and recommends one subject done properly plus a transferable practical or command-term block. A tutor who agrees to cover three sciences in one hour is selling convenience rather than teaching.

03

What the tier takes away in science specifically

A parent cannot judge a tutor's claim to know the tier without knowing roughly what the tier contains, so here is the shape of it. The higher tier in a tiered science is not the lower tier with harder questions; it includes material the lower tier never teaches, and that material is disproportionately what post-16 science courses assume.

In physics the higher tier extends the quantitative treatment and adds topics that A Level and Diploma physics build on directly. In chemistry it adds the mole and stoichiometric work that decides most of the grade, along with more demanding bonding and organic content. In biology it adds detail and quantitative handling across several topics rather than whole new areas.

The practical consequence runs in two directions and both are expensive. A lower-tier candidate taught higher-tier content has their hour wasted and their confidence knocked. A higher-tier candidate whose tutor works at the lower tier arrives at the paper under-prepared on exactly the content that separates the grades.

It matters for the tier decision itself as well. If your child needs a science for sixth form and is near the boundary, the argument for the higher tier is made in Year 10 with marked evidence aimed specifically at the separating content, followed by strong marks on the school's own assessments. A request without evidence does not move a head of department.

Specifications are revised and the school holds the version your child is actually sitting, so treat any list as a prompt to confirm rather than as the specification. The table sets out what the tier changes and what follows at sixteen.

WHAT THE HIGHER TIER ADDS IN EACH SCIENCE, AND WHY IT MATTERS LATER

04

The practical route, and why it is asked too late

  • Ask the exams officer which practical route applies to each science
  • Both routes test the same skills and need different preparation
  • The written alternative is not theory and should not be revised as theory
  • Four to six sessions pay into all three sciences at once
  • Laboratory work stays at school in either case

Every IGCSE science assesses practical skills, and how yours are assessed depends on the entry your school has made rather than on the subject. Some candidates sit a practical examination in a laboratory. Others sit a written alternative-to-practical paper testing the same skills on paper. A tutor who does not establish which applies prepares your child for the wrong thing.

Both routes test the same competences: writing a method precise enough for someone else to repeat exactly, identifying the variable changed and the ones that must be controlled, reading an instrument to an appropriate precision, tabulating with units in the headings, plotting with a sensible scale, drawing a line of best fit, and criticising a method rather than reporting that it worked.

The trap in the written route is that students revise it as theory because it is a written paper. It is not theory. It asks about apparatus, precision, anomalous results and improvements, and a student who has never been required to criticise a method on paper performs poorly on it however well they know the content of the subject.

This is also the best-value block available in science tutoring, because the skills transfer. Four to six sessions earn marks in biology, chemistry and physics simultaneously, and again in whichever practical route applies. Almost no family buys it, because on an invoice it does not look like a subject.

Online delivery suits the work well: the method is written, the table drawn, the graph plotted and then criticised, all on a shared screen. The hands-on laboratory work stays at school with the school's apparatus, where it belongs and where it would be in any case.

05

Which of the three sciences is really the problem

  • Collect one marked paper per science before buying anything
  • Expect three different problems rather than one
  • One science properly plus a transferable block beats three partial hours
  • The week is scarcer than the hourly rate in this community
  • The second science often needs nothing once technique transfers

Parents say science. Marked papers say something narrower, and collecting three of them costs nothing. In most households one science is secure, one is weak for a content reason and one is weak for a technique reason, and those are three different jobs needing three different responses over different timescales.

The pattern we see from this part of Dubai is consistent: physics weak on electricity and moments, chemistry weak on mole reliability, biology weak on the precision of written answers. Electricity needs a conceptual rebuild over about three sessions. Mole work needs one layout drilled in two or three. Biology needs answer construction against real mark schemes over three or four.

The temptation is to buy one weekly hour and ask the tutor to cover all three. That produces twenty minutes each, no completed piece of work, no marked past paper and no measurable change. Parents defend it on grounds of fairness between subjects, which is understandable and is not a teaching principle.

The better approach is to pick one science for a term, usually the one that most affects sixth-form options or has the clearest fixable problem, and add a transferable block on practical skills or command terms. In many households the second science then needs no tutoring, because the technique work carries across.

In a community where every child travels out to school and arrives home between roughly 15:40 and 16:50, the week is a scarcer resource than the money. Three tutoring sessions on top of three sciences' homework collapses by about week six, usually with the homework stopping first.

06

Boards, series and the zone timetable

  • Cambridge science codes: 0610, 0620, 0625. Pearson: 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1
  • UAE candidates sit June and November, or May/June and November
  • The February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only
  • Cambridge timetables are zone-specific; the school holds the right version
  • An enquiry about results is the alternative to a resit near a boundary

Cambridge and Pearson examine the sciences differently even where the content is similar, which is why the code decides the past papers. Cambridge IGCSE biology, chemistry and physics are 0610, 0620 and 0625. The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE equivalents are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Confirm current codes with your exams officer, since specifications are revised.

On series the rule for a UAE family is simple and frequently misstated. Cambridge candidates here sit the June and November series, with Checkpoint tests at lower secondary in March, May and October. The February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November.

The zone system has no UK equivalent and matters because it decides the dates your child sits. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

The November series is the resit route, and its cost is in timing. The Pearson precedent: the November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results arrived on 22 January 2026, while June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026.

So a November resit means a sixth-form application season carried out with a provisional grade. Where a June grade sits just below a boundary, the alternative is an enquiry about results, submitted by the school within a short window after results for a fee set by the board. Plan from the live official timetable the school holds rather than from any tutoring page.

07

What we can honestly staff

Biology, chemistry and physics at either tier are well covered and usually matched within the same week, including combined and coordinated award candidates once we know which award applies. That is the honest position, and no competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit at all.

The scarce resource is the hour rather than the subject. Weekday slots between 17:00 and 19:00 in the spring term are what every Year 11 household in Dubai wants, and they fill from September onwards. A family booking in the autumn holds the slot all year; a family asking in February chooses from what remains at the same hourly figure.

From these gates the arrival pattern narrows it further. With no school inside Jumeirah Islands, every child travels out and comes home between roughly 15:40 and 16:50, which makes 17:00 the dependable start and 17:30 safer for a child returning from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh. A 16:30 slot is nominally available and loses its first twenty minutes.

For the mandatory UAE subjects we are candid about the constraints. Support means working with the school's own material, because KHDA prohibits the use of different or additional content for those subjects without prior Ministry of Education permission, and schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of them.

Where a tutor covering a UAE family is based outside the UAE and teaches on Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book. Two ranking competitors in this market route UAE parents to non-UAE phone numbers without mentioning it, which is the same fact handled badly.

Rates, mandatory subjects and what we do not claim

  • AED 150-300 is the published band for a qualified online subject tutor
  • Pricing three sciences at once is how arrangements collapse
  • Mandatory UAE subjects sit on top of the science timetable
  • Equivalency counts five subjects, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • No regulator or board approval claimed, because none is held

The published Dubai rates are better read as a staffing ladder than as a price list. Budget providers advertise from AED 33-65 an hour, which buys availability and not much else. A qualified subject tutor online is quoted at AED 150-300, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150, and that is the first band at which somebody has actually read the specification your child is entered against. Specialist work sits at AED 200-450 or more on Bestimate's survey, with TutorChase around AED 270, and BartyED's premium examiner-led tier at AED 650. In-home visits are the band this district distorts: they run AED 180-350, with independent home tutors at AED 200-500, and across a villa community spread this thinly a real share of that upper figure is paying for the drive in and out rather than for a Physics specialist.

The specific trap in science is multiplication: pricing three weekly hours produces a monthly figure no household sustains for three terms, and the arrangement then stops in week six. Bestimate's monthly estimates are AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, per subject. One science done properly is better value than three started.

Two UAE facts shape the week around any science timetable. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA calculating instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit and requiring separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of them.

And on equivalency: the Ministry of Education requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 on the British track, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or better or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, which changes the arithmetic for a student taking ten subjects.

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB, and holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit. We do not perform or guarantee equivalency, publish no ratings, distribute no past papers, and write no coursework.

Where we tutor

Where science students around Jumeirah Islands study

Science candidates with an address inside these gates attend several different schools, because the community has none. That scattering is why there is no local cohort for a visiting tutor to serve.

Jumeirah Islands

Gated villa clusters around lakes with no school and no tuition centre inside. Students here attend four or five different schools, which means no shared entry pattern and no local science cohort.

Jumeirah Islands Townhouses

The adjoining townhouse enclave with the same pattern. For three sciences plus homework, the constraint here is the week rather than the hourly rate.

Jumeirah Heights

Apartments and townhouses alongside, sharing the approach roads. Slightly denser, and families here tend to fix one science on one evening rather than rotating subjects.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Sunmarke School and Arcadia Global School sit here, which makes it the densest IGCSE science cluster within reach and the shortest school run available from these gates.

Jumeirah Park

The neighbouring villa grid with a school inside it running IGCSE. Bus routes are often shared, so arrival times are comparable once the route order is taken into account.

The Gardens and Discovery Gardens

Denser housing with a mixed school map towards Jebel Ali. Enquiries from here are usually single-science rescue work in Year 11 rather than full programmes.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The largest school cluster in reach and the longest commute. Households travelling from here settle on 17:30, and the difference from 17:00 is twenty usable minutes.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one email for seven facts

Award, code per science, tier per science, practical route, series, internal deadlines and the zone timetable version. One message to the exams officer and every later decision rests on it. A tutor without those facts can only teach science in general.

  2. 02

Collect one marked paper per science

Together they usually show that one subject is secure, one has a content gap and one has a technique problem. That is three different jobs. Without the papers, any plan is guesswork presented as a programme, and it will default to the course the tutor knows best.

  3. 03

Choose one science, plus a transferable block

The science that most affects sixth-form options or has the clearest fixable problem, run properly for a term, with a practical skills or command-term block alongside it. Those blocks pay into all three subjects, which is why they are better value than a third weekly hour.

  4. 04

Test the tutor in the trial session

Watch what they ask for, how they describe biology, whether they raise the practical route, and what they say about tutoring three sciences. A tutor who agrees to cover all three in one hour is selling convenience rather than teaching.

  5. 05

Review on a timed paper at six sessions

We look at whether the named question types now score and whether your child can write a method someone else could repeat. If not, the match, the frequency or the diagnosis changes rather than more hours being bought against a wrong read.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The entry established before anything is taught

Award, code, tier and practical route are confirmed first, because separate, coordinated and combined science are different courses with different depth. Teaching the wrong depth wastes the hour in one direction or leaves a student under-prepared in the other.

A test you can run without science knowledge

The four signals in the table work on any provider, us included. What a tutor asks you for, how they describe biology, whether they raise the practical route, and what they say about three sciences, all tell you more than a CV does.

One science at a time, chosen from evidence

We will tell you to pick one science and add a transferable block rather than tutoring three. That reduces what you spend with us and it is the arrangement that is still running in May, which is the only test that matters.

Practical skills treated as a subject

Four to six sessions on method writing, variables, tabulation and graphing earn marks in all three sciences and again in whichever practical route applies. It is the best-value block in science tutoring and almost nobody buys it.

Correct about the UAE exam calendar

UAE candidates sit June and November with Cambridge, or May/June and November with Pearson, and Cambridge timetables are zone-specific. The February/March error circulates in Gulf-facing content and a parent cannot detect it before acting.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Islands: your questions answered

What exactly should we ask our school before hiring a science tutor?+

Seven things in one email: the award, meaning three separate sciences or a coordinated or combined one; the syllabus code for each science, because departments sometimes differ; the tier for each; whether the practical is assessed in a laboratory or on a written alternative paper; the series your child is entered for; any internal coursework deadlines; and confirmation of the zone-specific Cambridge timetable the school holds. An exams officer answers all seven in a single reply, and every later decision rests on them.

How can we judge a science tutor if we are not scientists ourselves?+

Listen for four things. What they ask you for: a specialist wants the award, codes, tiers, practical route and marked papers, while a general tutor wants the year group and topic list. How they describe biology: precision of language with a concrete example, not a need for more revision. Whether they raise the practical route before planning. And what they say about tutoring all three sciences, where the right answer is no, with a reason.

Our child does combined science. Does that limit A Level options?+

Often, and the decision sits with the receiving school rather than the board. A coordinated double award is accepted by some sixth forms for a science at A Level and not by others, and a combined single award more frequently is not. That is a Year 10 question to ask in writing, not a post-results discovery. If a separate entry is still possible and your child is capable of it, ask whether the school can accommodate it.

Do your science tutors come into the community?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs in India only, and there is no centre here either. Science tuition for families inside these gates is live online, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time, with past papers and graph work on a shared screen. The hands-on practical work stays at school with the school's apparatus in any case. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180-500 an hour including travel.

Which of the three sciences should we spend the hour on?+

Collect one marked paper per science and decide from those rather than from a feeling. Most households find one subject is secure, one has a content gap and one has a technique problem. Pick the science that most affects sixth-form options or has the clearest fixable problem, usually physics if electricity is the issue, and add a practical skills or command-term block that pays into all three. The second science often then needs nothing.

Why does our child lose marks in biology despite knowing the content?+

Because biology is marked on precision of language. The scheme wants a named variable and a direction; students write that something improved or the rate increased. Examiner reports make this point every series and nobody teaches it explicitly. State, describe, explain and suggest each demand a different answer shape. The work is answer construction against real mark schemes over three or four sessions, and it usually shows up immediately on the next timed paper.

Is the written practical paper just theory with a different name?+

No, and treating it that way is the commonest preparation error in IGCSE science. The alternative-to-practical paper asks about apparatus, precision, anomalous results and improvements, and it requires a student to criticise a method on paper rather than recall content. A student who has never been made to do that performs badly on it whatever they know. Ask your exams officer which route applies, then make sure the tutor prepares for that route specifically.

How long does the electricity problem in physics take to fix?+

About three sessions, and it is usually the best use of early time if physics is the weak subject. Students learn the relationships without a mental model of what the circuit is doing, so anything non-standard defeats them and revision does not touch it, because the gap is conceptual rather than factual. The work runs from the physical situation towards the calculation rather than the reverse. Moments in physics and mole reliability in chemistry are the next two candidates.

Can we really not tutor all three sciences at once?+

You can buy it and we will advise against it, for two reasons. An hour split three ways produces twenty minutes each, no completed work and no marked paper, so nobody can say whether it worked. And in a community where every child travels out to school and gets home between roughly 15:40 and 16:50, three tutoring sessions on top of three sciences' homework collapses by about week six, usually with the homework stopping first.

When will our child actually sit the science papers?+

UAE Cambridge candidates sit the June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only, despite appearing in content aimed at Gulf parents. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version and states it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong one, so plan from the version your school's exams officer holds.

Our child is on Core and wants a science at A Level. What should we do?+

Contest it in Year 10 with marked evidence, because the tier removes content as well as capping the grade and post-16 courses assume the higher-tier material. A term of weekly work aimed specifically at the separating content, followed by strong marks on the school's own assessments, is what changes a head of department's view. If the cap stands, ask the receiving sixth form directly what bridging they expect rather than assuming the subject is closed.

Which single purchase gives the most back across all three sciences?+

The practical skills block: four to six sessions on writing a repeatable method, identifying and controlling variables, reading instruments to an appropriate precision, tabulating with units in the headings, plotting with a sensible scale and criticising a method. It earns marks in biology, chemistry and physics at once and again in whichever practical route applies. Almost no family buys it because on an invoice it does not look like a subject.

What should the summer before Year 11 be used for?+

A short block, and it is the best-timed science tutoring available. With nothing else competing for the time, four to six sessions can rebuild electricity properly, drill a mole layout until it is automatic, or establish practical method writing across all three sciences. That removes work the autumn term would otherwise need weekly support to do, and it secures a weekly slot before Year 11 demand fills the early evenings across the city.

Can you help with the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons?+

We can support a student with their school's own material, within real limits worth knowing. Those subjects are compulsory in all Dubai private schools regardless of curriculum, KHDA calculates their instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit and requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of them, and using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited. They are also excluded from the five subjects equivalency counts.

What time should science sessions be from these gates?+

17:00, or 17:30 if your child travels back from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh. With no school inside Jumeirah Islands every pupil travels out, and the return leg usually serves two or three other communities first, so arrivals run from roughly 15:40 to 16:50. A 16:30 slot loses its first twenty minutes. Ask your transport office for your own route's timings, because households inside the same gates differ by twenty minutes, and keep Saturday morning for a full paper.

Identify the entry, then pick one science

If you are looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Jumeirah Islands, send one email and collect three papers. The email asks your exams officer for the award, the code and tier per science, the practical route, the series, the internal deadlines and the zone timetable. The papers show you that this is three different problems rather than one. Then pick a single science, add a practical skills or command-term block that pays into all three, and set the slot around when the bus actually arrives. Our lessons run live online, one to one, with a free trial first.
