What a physics specialist knows that a science teacher may not

A capable physics teacher knows physics. A Diploma physics specialist knows four additional things, and those four decide whether a term of tutoring changes a grade. They are: how the components are weighted and what each one actually asks for, how the internal investigation is marked, where this specific course loses marks that have nothing to do with physics, and where Higher Level genuinely separates from Standard.

Take the second of those. The sciences investigation is marked against four criteria on the current published arrangement -- research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation -- for a total of twenty-four marks. Design carries as much as analysis, which means most of the mark is decided before any apparatus is touched. A tutor who has never read those descriptors cannot help with the component students handle worst.

Or the third. Physics students routinely lose marks with the physics entirely correct: a gradient quoted without units, significant figures inconsistent within an answer, a value given to five figures from two-figure data. And in extended response, answering why something happens by describing what happens, or abandoning a four-mark question after one blocked step. None of that is a physics gap.

The fourth is the one that most often goes wrong in hiring. Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra chapters. The additional material in fields, induction and quantum physics changes the character of the questions, which assume a student can combine two or three ideas in one answer with explicit reference to mechanism. A tutor strong at Standard Level can run out of depth about four weeks into Higher Level work.

Supply makes this harder locally. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum, and Higher Level physics is among the thinnest specialisms within that. Jumeirah Islands has no school inside the gates, so the community's Diploma students are scattered across several schools and there is no local concentration to draw a tutor from.

One more fact changes how a family here should plan. The dates that actually govern a Diploma physics year are mostly set by your child's school rather than by the IB: the investigation deadline, the mock window and the internal milestones. We do not publish specific IB session or results dates on this site, because the IB's own site is the authority and we have not verified them. Ask the coordinator for the school's calendar in September.

IB Gram matches on subject and level and teaches live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. For physics the shared screen is a real advantage, because diagrams, derivations and marked papers all live better on it than on a kitchen table.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics support around these gates arrives at three stages, and what counts as expertise changes at each.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences

Criterion-marked across knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks go on process: a method nobody could repeat, an uncontrolled variable, an evaluation reporting that the experiment worked. Content recall is rarely the issue.

These are the habits Diploma physics assumes on day one, which makes the final MYP year unusually good value. A tutor needs the school's own task sheet and descriptors to work usefully at this stage.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics Standard Level

Mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism, circular motion and gravitation, atomic and nuclear physics and energy production, with an internal investigation. Standard Level still demands real quantitative work, and students who chose it to reduce the load are often surprised by the mathematics.

Easier to staff than Higher Level, so families here asking for Standard Level support in the spring term are usually matched within the same week, including at the earlier evening slots.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics Higher Level

The same topics extended, with additional depth in fields, electromagnetic induction, quantum and nuclear physics, and a more demanding mathematical treatment throughout. Extended-response questions assume two or three ideas combined in one answer, which is where the marks separate.

Among the scarcest tutoring combinations in Dubai, and scarcest of all in a weekday early-evening slot during the spring term. Booking in the autumn secures a better tutor at the same hourly figure.

DPBoth levels

The scientific investigation

An independent investigation, internally assessed and externally moderated, worth around a fifth of the grade on the current published structure and marked against four criteria for twenty-four marks. Research design carries as much as data analysis, which is the fact students most need to know early.

The deadline is set by your child's school and usually falls a long way before the written papers. Families in this community routinely plan around the May session and meet the real deadline with weeks rather than months to go.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a Diploma physics specialist should be able to say about each topic area. Use these as test questions; the answers are specific and checkable.

Mechanics and kinematics

HL and SL

A specialist names vector resolution as the failure that matters, because students resolve by remembering which is sine and which is cosine rather than reading the triangle. That error survives two years and reappears in circular motion, inclined planes and fields. It needs geometry, not more formulae.

Circular motion and gravitation

HL and SL

A specialist knows students invent an outward force rather than identifying what provides the centripetal effect, and that the error is conceptual so revision does not touch it. The fix is diagram work in which the student names the real force every time.

Waves and oscillations

HL and SL

Simple harmonic motion, interference, diffraction, standing waves and the Doppler effect. A specialist points at phase and path difference as the marks-loser, because students memorise a condition without being able to draw the situation that produces it, and the drawing is what the question tests.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

A specialist names the potential divider as the single most mishandled topic in the course. Students treat circuits algebraically when the reliable method is to reason about the physical situation first and calculate second. Three sessions usually rebuilds it properly.

Fields and electromagnetic induction

Higher Level emphasis

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields treated together, with flux, induction and Lenz's law. This is where Higher Level separates and where a generalist runs out. A specialist can explain how the three field types are taught as one structure rather than as three topics.

Thermal physics and energy

HL and SL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat, gas laws, energy production and transfer. A specialist knows calculation marks are usually secure and explanation marks are not, because students describe what happens without naming the mechanism the question asked about.

Atomic, nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL, with HL depth

Radioactive decay, binding energy, mass defect, and quantum phenomena at Higher Level. A specialist flags unit and order-of-magnitude errors in mass-energy calculations, and notes that the quantum material arrives late and is routinely under-revised relative to its weight.

Data analysis and uncertainties

HL and SL

Graph reading, gradients with units, error bars and propagated uncertainty. A specialist calls this the best-value topic in the subject, because it earns marks in the written papers and again in the investigation. Students skip it because it feels like mathematics.

Extended-response technique

HL and SL

Long answers combining two or three ideas with explicit reference to mechanism. A specialist can describe the difference between describing an outcome and explaining a cause, and can show it on a mark scheme. It is trainable with marked past papers and nothing else.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A specialist names the four criteria and says that design carries as much as analysis, then explains that a tutor may teach criteria and comment on drafts and may never write any part of it. Any other answer ends the conversation.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways physics support is used from these gates, all delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly from the first Diploma year

One fixed hour a week alongside the school's sequence. Physics compounds in a specific chain: mechanics into fields, fields into induction, so an unresolved misunderstanding multiplies rather than sitting still. A weekly slot from the first year also secures a specialist before the spring squeeze.

  • Same tutor, same slot, tracked against school assessments
  • Vector and uncertainty work built in from the start
  • Short written note after each session
  • Frequency rises for mocks and the final term

Investigation coaching

A block timed to the school's internal deadline: narrowing a research question that school apparatus can actually answer, planning the range and number of readings, then processing data, propagating uncertainty and writing an evaluation that assesses the method. The tutor reads and comments and writes nothing.

  • Research question narrowed before any apparatus is used
  • Measurement precision checked against the expected effect
  • Uncertainty propagation taught explicitly
  • Criterion feedback on the student's own draft

Technique and conduct block

Four to six sessions on the things that cost marks when the physics is right: units on gradients, consistent significant figures, explaining mechanism rather than describing outcome, and not abandoning long questions. Short, specific and the cheapest marks available in the subject.

  • Worked entirely from marked past papers
  • Explicit practice on extended response
  • Unit and significant-figure discipline every session
  • Ends with a timed paper to test the result

01

Six things to ask a physics tutor before you hire them

These questions have specific answers, which is why they work better than reading a CV. Ask them in the trial session, before price comes up, and listen for whether the answer is precise or general. A tutor who says they will confirm a detail with the school and then does so is fine; one who glides past it will be guessing for a term.

First: which components does this course have at my child's level, and roughly how are they weighted? Second: how is the investigation marked, and what are the criteria called? Third: where does this course lose marks when the physics is correct? Fourth: what changes between Standard and Higher Level, specifically?

Fifth: what will you ask us for before the first session? The right answer is a marked paper and the school's assessment calendar, because the deadline that matters for the investigation is set by the school rather than the IB. Sixth: what will you not do? The right answer includes not writing any part of the investigation and not promising a grade.

The answers to the third and fourth questions are the most diagnostic. A specialist names unit and significant-figure discipline, describing rather than explaining, and abandoning multi-step questions. On the level question they name fields, induction and quantum depth rather than saying Higher Level covers more material.

On exam dates, note what a careful tutor will not do: state a specific IB session or results date as fact. The IB's own site is the authority and we do not publish those dates here. A tutor who quotes exact IB dates confidently without reference to the school's own calendar is working from something they have not verified.

Where Higher Level actually separates from Standard

This is the question that most often produces a mis-hire. The Higher Level course extends the same topics rather than adding separate ones, which sounds like a difference of quantity and is actually a difference of kind. The extension changes what questions ask for: synthesis and justification where Standard Level asks for recall and a clean calculation.

Concretely, the separation happens in fields and electromagnetic induction, in the quantum and nuclear depth added at Higher Level, and in the mathematical treatment running through all of it. A Higher Level extended-response question frequently requires two or three ideas combined, with the mechanism named explicitly, rather than one relationship applied correctly.

That is why a tutor can be genuinely effective at Standard Level across two sciences and out of their depth at Higher Level in either. It is not a criticism of the tutor; Higher Level depth takes sustained specialist teaching to maintain. It is, however, the most common mismatch in Dubai physics tutoring and it is invisible for about four weeks.

The test is specific rather than general. Ask how the three field types are taught together, or what Lenz's law actually lets a student predict, or how an induction question differs from a magnetic force question. A Higher Level specialist answers immediately. A Standard Level tutor hedges, and that hedge is worth more to you than any amount of stated experience.

The table sets out what changes and what it means for how long support realistically takes. It is written for planning in the autumn of the first Diploma year, because a level mismatch identified then is a manageable problem and the same mismatch found in March is not.

The investigation, and what 'design' means in physics

On the current published arrangement the sciences investigation is marked against four criteria -- research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation -- for twenty-four marks. Criterion names and allocations are set by the IB and revised between syllabus cycles, so confirm them against your school's copy of the current subject guide rather than against this page.

The fact that changes behaviour is that design carries as much weight as analysis. A student who collects excellent data for a badly framed question has already lost marks that no amount of careful graphing recovers. The single most valuable hour of tutoring in the whole investigation happens before any apparatus is booked.

In physics a workable research question has four properties. The variable being changed can be controlled with school equipment. The quantity measured can be measured precisely enough that the change exceeds the uncertainty. The apparatus is actually available. And the expected relationship connects to accepted physics, so the conclusion can be discussed rather than merely reported.

Most failures breach the second property. A student measuring a small effect with an instrument too coarse to detect it produces data that cannot support anything, and discovers it in week three. That is a planning conversation, not a physics problem, and it is exactly what a specialist earns their fee on.

Evaluation is where the remaining marks go. Students write a conclusion and label it an evaluation, restating the result rather than assessing which source of uncertainty dominated, which control was weakest, and what a different approach would have improved. That is two or three sessions of writing practice and several marks.

PHYSICS INVESTIGATION: WHAT EACH CRITERION ACTUALLY WANTS

Research designA focused question and a justified, workable method6An effect smaller than the instrument's uncertainty
Data analysisCorrect processing, graphs, error bars, propagation6Uncertainties recorded and never propagated

04

Reading a marked physics paper properly

  • Conceptual errors are few, findable and permanent once fixed
  • Unit and significant-figure discipline is the cheapest marks available
  • Extended response needs marked papers, not more content teaching
  • Some physics failures are algebra failures in disguise
  • A plan to start at topic one means the paper was not read

Hand a tutor a marked paper at the start of the trial and watch what they do with it. In physics the categories are unusually clean, and a specialist sorts them quickly. There are three, and they need different responses over different timescales.

The first is conceptual: vector resolution done by habit rather than geometry, an invented outward force in circular motion, a potential divider treated algebraically. These are few in number, findable from one paper, and once corrected they stay corrected. They are the best use of early sessions.

The second is presentation of correct physics: units missing from a gradient, significant figures inconsistent across an answer, a derived value quoted to five figures from two-figure data. This is examiner-level discipline and it recovers marks on every paper. It costs very little to teach and is the cheapest improvement in the subject.

The third is extended-response technique: answering why by describing what, abandoning a four-mark question after one blocked step, naming the right physics without connecting it to the specific situation in the question. This needs marked past papers and a conversation about each decision rather than more content.

There is a fourth category that looks like physics and is not: the mathematics. A student who cannot rearrange a formula with the subject on both sides, or who resolves vectors by recalling which ratio to use, fails physics questions for mathematical reasons. A session or two of algebra inside a physics hour often moves more marks than more physics would.

05

Practical work when the tutoring is online

  • Practical work stays at school with the school's apparatus
  • Research design and data analysis are paper work, and most of the marks
  • Precision checked against the expected effect before the laboratory
  • Hands-on equipment coaching is a genuine case for in-person help
  • Diagrams and derivations work well on a shared screen

This is the honest limitation and the question families here ask most. Your child's practical physics happens at school, with the school's apparatus, under the teacher's supervision, and no tutor substitutes for that. What a tutor does is everything either side of the laboratory, which is where most of the investigation marks actually sit.

Before: narrowing the research question, choosing a measurable variable, identifying what must be controlled, checking that the instrument's precision is finer than the effect being measured, and planning the range and number of readings so the data can support a conclusion. All of that is paper work and it determines most of the research design mark.

After: processing the data, plotting with error bars, finding a gradient with units, propagating uncertainty, and writing an evaluation that assesses the method rather than restating the result. Again paper work, and the part students handle worst. A shared screen with the spreadsheet open is a better environment for it than two people over a printed table.

What online delivery does not do is hands-on apparatus coaching. If your child specifically needs someone beside them handling equipment, in-person provision is better and we will say so rather than taking the booking. IB Gram has no home-visit service and no centre in the UAE, so for that requirement you need a local provider.

For everything else the format is at least neutral and often better, because a free-body diagram can be redrawn five times in a minute and the student keeps the written record of the session instead of losing a loose sheet by Thursday.

06

What we can honestly staff, and when

No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, so here is ours. Standard Level physics is reasonably covered and usually matched within the same week. Higher Level physics is scarce, and scarcest of all in a weekday slot between 17:00 and 19:00 during the spring term, which is when every Diploma family in Dubai wants the same hour.

That scarcity is structural rather than tactical. Teaching Higher Level physics well needs depth in fields, induction and quantum phenomena, the mathematics to support it, and familiarity with how the investigation is marked. A tutor with four Higher Level students already has a full early evening, and insisting they also drive to a gated community removes most of the remainder.

The leverage available to you is timing, and it costs nothing. A weekly Higher Level slot booked in September costs the same per hour as one booked in March and gets a materially better tutor, because in September the specialist's calendar is still open. That is simply how a calendar of one-to-one appointments fills.

That scarcity has a consequence most providers leave you to discover later. Where a Higher Level physics specialist covering a UAE family is based outside the UAE and teaches on Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book rather than after the first lesson - and in this subject the disclosure is needed more often than in anything else we staff, because the pool able to teach fields, induction and quantum phenomena at Higher Level is not deep enough inside the Emirates to fill that 17:00 to 19:00 ring on its own. A parent is entitled to know who is teaching their child and from where. Two ranking competitors in this market route UAE parents to non-UAE phone numbers without mentioning it at all, which turns a perfectly workable arrangement into something that feels concealed.

If a combination is not free you are told, with a date, and offered a choice: an off-peak or weekend slot with the specialist, an interim tutor with a stated handover, or a wait. The table sets out where supply currently sits.

Scheduling physics from a community with no school

  • Arrivals home here run from roughly 15:40 to 16:50
  • 17:00 is the dependable start; 17:30 for the longest commutes
  • Quantitative work earlier; conceptual and planning work later
  • Saturday morning is the only ninety-minute block in the week
  • Ramadan sessions move rather than stop

Jumeirah Islands has no school inside the gates, so every student travels out and back. Dubai schools finish between roughly 14:30 and 15:30, and a bus route serving this community usually calls at two or three others first, putting arrivals home between about 15:40 and 16:50 depending on the school and the route order.

The dependable weekday start is therefore 17:00, and 17:30 for children returning from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh. A 16:30 slot is nominally available and loses its first twenty minutes to settling, which in a cumulative subject means the arrangement feels less effective than it is and gets dropped.

For physics the slot splits by work type. Quantitative work and derivations belong earlier, because arithmetic and algebraic accuracy are the first casualties of tiredness. Conceptual discussion and investigation planning tolerate a later slot, and second-year students frequently do better at 19:30 for that kind of work than at five o'clock.

Use the weekend for long work. A Saturday morning slot is the only ninety-minute block in a Jumeirah Islands week, which makes it the right place for a full timed paper or for processing investigation data properly, with Sunday used to review what came out of it.

During Ramadan the pattern shifts: shortened school hours, later households, and a post-Iftar or late-morning weekend session working better than anything at five in the afternoon. We reschedule rather than cancel, and because nobody travels a change is a slot swap rather than a negotiation.

08

Rates, limits and what we do not claim

  • AED 150-300 is the published band for a qualified online subject tutor
  • No part of the investigation written, rewritten or supplied
  • No subject guides or past papers distributed
  • No ratings published and no unsourced statistics
  • No regulator or board approval claimed, because none is held

Published Dubai rates put a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors quoting IB from AED 200. Specialist IB tuition sits at AED 200-450 or more on Bestimate's survey, with TutorChase around AED 270 and BartyED's premium examiner-led tier at AED 650. Budget providers advertise from AED 33-65, which buys supervision rather than Higher Level physics.

In-home visits run AED 180-350 on Bestimate's figures, with independent home tutors at AED 200-500. For monthly planning, Bestimate estimates AED 240-600 for a weekly budget arrangement, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. All are the providers' own figures, read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram price.

On coursework the limit is absolute. A tutor may explain the four criteria, help narrow a research question, teach uncertainty treatment and graphical analysis, and read the student's draft and name which descriptor band it meets. A tutor may not write, part-write, rewrite or supply any part of it. Operators in this market sell completed internal assessments at four-figure prices, and the consequence falls on the student.

We do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; they are cited and linked, and your child's school holds licensed access. We publish no rating, review count or satisfaction percentage, because a statistic without its sample size, date and method cannot be checked.

One approval claim circulates in physics more than in any other subject - that a tutor is a current IB examiner, which would conveniently explain how anybody knows where investigation marks go - and we make neither that claim nor any other we cannot hold. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit. What a physics specialist covering a Jumeirah Islands family does need is the individual permission: a MoHRE private tuition work permit, free and valid for two years. Ask to see it, because it costs the tutor nothing to hold and nothing to mention, and a provider that answers a question about approval with a logo has answered a different question.

Where we tutor

Where physics students around Jumeirah Islands study

Diploma physics candidates with an address inside these gates are spread across several schools, because the community has none of its own. That scattering is the practical reason local specialist supply is thin.

Jumeirah Islands

Gated villa clusters around lakes with no school inside. Diploma physics students here attend four or five different schools, so there is no local cohort for a visiting tutor to build a round on.

Jumeirah Islands Townhouses

The adjoining townhouse enclave with the same pattern. For derivation-heavy work the binding constraint here is usually a quiet room rather than the commute.

Jumeirah Heights

Apartments and townhouses alongside, using the same approach roads. Families here tend to fix an evening slot for the year, which suits a subject that compounds as physics does.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Sunmarke School offers the Diploma, giving the shortest school run available from these gates and the only realistic chance of an early-evening physics slot.

The Meadows and Emirates Hills

Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills both have established Diploma cohorts, and physics enquiries from here tend to concern Higher Level fields work.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The largest school cluster within reach, including continuum IB provision. The longest regular commute for a family here and the reason 17:30 beats 17:00 for these households.

Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Several long-established schools along the coast road. Afternoon traffic on that route pushes families towards after-dinner sessions for reasoning-heavy work.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level, and mean it

Higher or Standard Level, because they need different tutors rather than different amounts of the same tutor. If your child is undecided or may drop a level, say so, since that changes what the first six weeks should target and whether a diagnostic is the right first purchase.

  2. 02

Send one marked paper and the school calendar

The paper sorts conceptual errors from presentation habits from extended-response technique. The school's assessment calendar gives the investigation deadline, which is the date that actually governs the year and which families here routinely discover late.

  3. 03

Ask the six questions in the trial

Components and weighting, investigation criteria, where marks go when the physics is right, what changes at Higher Level, what they want from you first, and what they will not do. A specialist answers all six precisely. Tell us if they cannot and we change the match.

  4. 04

Book the slot by work type

Quantitative and derivation work earlier, conceptual and planning work later. From these gates that means 17:00 or 17:30 for the former and up to 19:30 for the latter, with Saturday morning kept for a full timed paper or investigation data processing.

  5. 05

Review on marked work at six sessions

We look at whether the question types that previously failed now score and whether your child explains mechanism rather than describing outcome. If not, the match, the frequency or the diagnosis changes instead of more hours being added.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Level treated as a separate specialism

Higher Level physics separates at fields, induction and quantum depth, and a tutor strong at Standard Level can run out there about four weeks in. We match on level, state the wait when a Higher Level slot is scarce, and do not substitute quietly.

A test you can apply to any provider

The six questions in the table work on us as readily as on anyone else. We would rather you used them and chose someone else than paid a capable general science tutor to teach a Higher Level course and found the gap in November.

Investigation planning before the laboratory

Most investigation marks are decided before apparatus is booked, because research design carries as much as data analysis. We put a planning session first and check that the measurement precision exceeds the effect being measured.

Honest about what online does not do

Practical work stays at school, and if your child needs hands-on equipment coaching we will say a local provider is the right answer. We would rather lose the booking than take money for something the format does not do well.

Rates quoted with their source

No dates or approvals we cannot stand behind

We do not publish specific IB session or results dates, because the IB's own site is the authority and we have not verified them. And we hold no regulator or board approval, so we claim none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Islands: your questions answered

What would a real Diploma physics specialist know that a science teacher might not?+

Four things. How the components are weighted at your child's level and what each asks for. How the internal investigation is marked, which on the current arrangement is four criteria for twenty-four marks with research design carrying as much as data analysis. Where this course loses marks when the physics is correct, meaning units on gradients, significant figures and describing instead of explaining. And where Higher Level separates from Standard, which is fields, induction and quantum depth rather than simply more content.

How do we test whether a tutor can handle Higher Level rather than Standard?+

Ask something specific rather than general. How are the three field types taught together? What does Lenz's law actually let a student predict? How does an induction question differ from a magnetic force question? A Higher Level specialist answers immediately and in detail. A Standard Level tutor hedges or answers at a level of generality that could apply to any course, and that hedge is the most useful information you will get in the whole trial session.

Will a physics tutor come to our house in Jumeirah Islands?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs in India only, and there is no centre here either. Physics tuition for families inside these gates is live online, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared surface for free-body diagrams and derivations. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180-500 an hour including travel if presence in the room is essential for your child, and for hands-on equipment work it genuinely may be.

How does the investigation work if the lessons are online?+

The laboratory work happens at school with the school's apparatus and supervision, as it would in any case. The tutoring covers everything either side, which is where most of the marks sit: narrowing the research question, checking that the instrument's precision is finer than the effect being measured, confirming the apparatus is available, then processing data, plotting with error bars, propagating uncertainty and writing an evaluation that assesses the method rather than restating the result.

What makes a physics research question actually workable?+

Four properties. The variable you change can be controlled with school equipment. The quantity you measure can be measured precisely enough that the change exceeds the uncertainty. The apparatus is genuinely available. And the expected relationship connects to accepted physics, so the conclusion can be discussed rather than merely reported. Most failures breach the second: a small effect measured with a coarse instrument produces data that cannot support anything, and the student finds out in week three.

Our child's physics is right but the marks are low. What is going on?+

Presentation and technique, almost certainly. Units omitted from a gradient, significant figures inconsistent within an answer, a value quoted to five figures from two-figure data. Then extended-response habits: answering why something happens by describing what happens, or abandoning a four-mark question after one blocked step. These are examiner-level discipline rather than physics, they are visible on any marked paper, and they are the cheapest marks in the subject to recover.

Is some of our child's physics problem actually a maths problem?+

Frequently, and it is worth checking early. A student who cannot rearrange a formula with the subject appearing on both sides, or who resolves vectors by recalling which ratio to use rather than reading the triangle, will fail physics questions for mathematical reasons. A session or two of algebra inside a physics hour often moves more marks than more physics would. A specialist spots this from a marked paper rather than from a conversation about topics.

When should physics support start for a Diploma student?+

The autumn of the first Diploma year, one hour a week, rising to two or three per week in the final weeks. Physics compounds in a specific chain: mechanics underpins fields and fields underpin induction, so an unresolved misunderstanding multiplies rather than sitting still. Starting in the spring of the second year means more sessions at the scarcest time, competing for the fullest calendars, which is the highest cost per unit of improvement available.

How long does the potential divider take to fix?+

About three sessions, and it is worth doing properly because it is the single most mishandled topic in the course. The problem is that students treat circuits algebraically, applying relationships without a model of what the circuit is doing, so anything non-standard defeats them. The fix is to reason about the physical situation first and calculate second, which takes rebuilding rather than revision. Electricity as a whole is usually the best use of early sessions.

Which topics tend to be under-revised before the papers?+

Quantum phenomena at Higher Level, because the material arrives late in the course, and data analysis with uncertainties, because students classify it as mathematics and skip it. Both are unusually trainable: the quantum content is finite, and data analysis is a procedure that earns marks in the written papers and again in the investigation. Together they are the best-value revision target in the subject and they are routinely left until there is no time for them.

Can one tutor take physics and chemistry at Higher Level?+

We generally advise against it. Genuine depth in Higher Level physics and Higher Level chemistry is rare in one person, and a tutor stretched across both tends to be strong in one and adequate in the other, which you will discover in about a month. Two tutors on two fixed evenings is also easier to protect in a household where everyone travels to school. Ask directly which level they have taught each subject to, then ask a specific question in each.

Why is Higher Level physics harder to book than other subjects?+

Because the specialism is thin and the demand is concentrated. Teaching it well needs depth in fields, induction and quantum phenomena plus the mathematics and knowledge of how the investigation is marked, and a tutor with four Higher Level students already has a full early evening. Every Diploma family in Dubai wants a weekday slot between 17:00 and 19:00 in the spring term. Booking in September costs the same per hour and gets a materially better tutor.

What time should a physics session be from these gates?+

17:00, or 17:30 if your child travels back from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh, because with no school inside Jumeirah Islands every pupil travels out and arrives home between roughly 15:40 and 16:50. Split by work type: quantitative work and derivations earlier, when accuracy is best, and conceptual discussion or investigation planning later, where 19:30 often suits a second-year student. Keep Saturday morning for a full timed paper or for processing investigation data.

Do you publish the IB exam dates we should plan around?+

No, deliberately. The IB's own site is the authority for session and results dates and we have not verified them independently, so we will not restate a date a parent might act on. What we will say is that Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session and that the dates governing your year are mostly the school's internal ones: investigation deadlines, Extended Essay milestones and mock windows. Ask the IB coordinator for the school's calendar in September.

Our child may drop physics from Higher to Standard Level. Can you advise?+

A diagnostic session will tell you more than a term of worrying, and the decision belongs with the school. What we can say is that the drop is usually possible early in the first Diploma year and rarely sensible once the second has started, and that some degree routes specify the Higher Level course. Read the published entry requirements for the programmes your child is considering before anyone reduces a level to relieve workload, because the relief is immediate and the cost arrives later.

Test the course knowledge, not the subject knowledge

If you are looking for an IB physics tutor in Jumeirah Islands, ask six things before you pay anyone: the components and their weighting at your child's level, how the investigation is marked, where marks go when the physics is right, what changes at Higher Level, what they want from you first, and what they will not do. Then hand them a marked paper and the school's assessment calendar. That is the whole test. Our lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial session first.
