IGCSE Science Tutor in Al Jaddaf

The question behind every search for an IGCSE science tutor in Al Jaddaf is simpler than it looks: is there anybody nearby who actually knows the syllabus my child is sitting? Not biology in general. Cambridge 0610 Extended, or Edexcel 4BI1, or Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, which are three different papers with three different mark schemes. This page answers that honestly, and explains how to test a tutor in ten minutes. Teaching runs one to one, live online, in the Gulf evening.

  • Matched to the syllabus code, not just to the subject name
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel science routes both covered
  • A ten-minute test you can run on any tutor yourself
  • Free trial lesson on your child's own past paper

IB & IGCSE in Al Jaddaf

The question nobody answers straight

A parent in Al Jaddaf types 'IGCSE science tutor near me' because they want to know whether anyone within reach genuinely knows the course their child is taking. It is a reasonable question and the Dubai market answers it badly. Agency pages list subjects and areas, publish a photograph of a smiling tutor, and never mention a syllabus code. The implicit promise is that science is science. It is not, and the difference shows up in the first marked paper.

Here is what the question really means. A Year 11 student sitting Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 at Extended tier is examined on a specific set of supplement content, with a six-mark extended-response style and an alternative-to-practical paper that asks for apparatus judgement. A student sitting Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 meets a different paper structure and a different balance of recall and application. A student on Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three sciences in a reduced form, and a tutor who teaches full Biology will over-teach half of it and miss the parts that are actually examined.

So the honest answer to the question as asked is this: whether somebody who lives near Al Jaddaf knows your child's syllabus is almost entirely a matter of luck. The creek corridor is not a science-tutoring district. The schools here run a spread of boards, families arrive from a dozen school systems, and the tutor who happens to live two towers over may teach the national curriculum, or the American sequence, or Cambridge Biology but not the Co-ordinated route your child is actually on. Proximity is not evidence of anything.

Which is why we stopped matching on geography. Open delivery to live video and the pool changes from the people who will drive to the creek at 17:00 to everybody who teaches your child's exact specification and is free in the Gulf evening. That is not a sales argument about convenience. It is the difference between a tutor who recognises the mark scheme and one who is reading it for the first time alongside your child, at the same hourly rate.

What follows is practical: how to find out which syllabus your child is on, what each route examines, how practical skills are assessed without coursework, the ten-minute conversation that tells you whether a tutor knows the specification, and which exam series UAE candidates actually sit. There is a tier decision hiding in the Cambridge routes that carries a grade ceiling, and most families only hear about it after entries have closed, so that gets a section of its own. The exam calendar section exists because this market gets it wrong often enough to be dangerous: the February and March Cambridge series is offered to India only, and a Dubai parent handed those dates has been given the wrong country's timetable to plan around. Lessons are delivered one to one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE science is not one qualification. Dubai schools run at least three distinct shapes of it, and the shape decides what a tutor needs to know before the first session.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Three qualifications, each with its own papers and its own grade. On the Cambridge route these are Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625; on the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE route they are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. A student takes three sets of papers and receives three grades, which is the route most British-curriculum schools in Dubai use for students heading towards A Level or IB Diploma sciences.

This is the most common route at the larger British campuses near Al Jaddaf and south of the creek. The practical consequence for tutoring is that three separate specialists usually beat one generalist. A tutor strong on Physics 0625 may be merely adequate on Biology 0610, where the examined skill is precise terminology rather than calculation, and the difference is visible in the marks within a term.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Co-ordinated Sciences, double award

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers biology, chemistry and physics in a single qualification that counts as two IGCSEs. Content is reduced relative to the three separate syllabuses but the papers still examine all three disciplines, including an alternative-to-practical or practical component. It suits students taking a broad subject spread who still need credible science qualifications.

Co-ordinated Sciences is where the mismatch between tutor and syllabus does the most damage in Dubai. A tutor teaching from the full Biology 0610 scheme will spend hours on content that is not examined on 0654 and skip the way the paper sequences across disciplines. Families pay full rate for partly irrelevant teaching, and the first indication is a mock result that does not reflect the hours put in.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined Science, single award

A single-award route, Cambridge Combined Science 0653 or the Edexcel Science (Double Award) 4SC1 depending on the school, covering all three disciplines at a lighter content load and yielding one grade. Schools use it where a student's timetable or prior attainment makes three separate sciences unrealistic, and it still provides a recognised science qualification at 16.

The important planning point for an Al Jaddaf family is what each route leaves open. Progression to A Level or IB Diploma sciences is generally smoother from separate sciences or Co-ordinated than from single-award Combined, though schools set their own entry criteria. Ask the head of science directly what their own sixth form requires before assuming any route is sufficient; the answer varies between campuses in the same emirate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the science areas Al Jaddaf families ask for most, with what each one actually examines and where the marks leak away. Syllabus codes are given because they are the thing a tutor must match.

Biology, Cambridge 0610

Core and Extended

Characteristics of living organisms, cells, enzymes, transport, respiration, coordination, reproduction, inheritance and ecology. Marks are lost on imprecise terminology more than on misunderstanding: writing that a substance moves in rather than naming diffusion down a concentration gradient costs the mark every time.

Biology, Edexcel 4BI1

Single tier

Similar content territory to Cambridge but a different paper structure and a different balance of recall against data interpretation. Students moving between the two boards mid-course, which happens often in Dubai, need the paper technique retaught even though the biology itself is familiar.

Chemistry, Cambridge 0620

Core and Extended

Particulate nature of matter, atoms and bonding, stoichiometry, electrochemistry, energetics, rates, acids and bases, the periodic table, metals and organic chemistry. Stoichiometry is where the grade is decided; a correct method on an unbalanced equation loses every subsequent mark.

Chemistry, Edexcel 4CH1

Single tier

Comparable content with its own question style, including a distinctive approach to calculation-heavy items. The recurring loss on either board is the same: students who can recite a definition but cannot apply it to an unfamiliar substance in a data table.

Physics, Cambridge 0625

Core and Extended

Motion, forces and energy, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism, nuclear physics and space physics. Multi-step problems are the differentiator between grades; students who can recall every formula still stall when two have to be chained together under time pressure.

Physics, Edexcel 4PH1

Single tier

Similar syllabus territory with its own formula sheet conventions and paper split. Unit conversion is the quiet killer on both boards, particularly where a question gives a value in centimetres and the relationship demands metres without saying so.

Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

Core and Extended

All three disciplines in one double-award qualification with reduced content. Requires a tutor working from the 0654 syllabus specifically, because the examined subset is not simply the easier parts of the three separate courses and the papers move between disciplines within a single question set.

Practical and data skills

Core and Extended

Apparatus identification, variable control, plotting, anomalies, and improving a described method. Examined through the alternative-to-practical paper on most Cambridge routes. Rarely taught as a distinct skill in a crowded school scheme, and therefore unusually responsive to a short tutoring block.

Scientific terminology and command words

Core and Extended

State, describe, explain, suggest and compare each demand a different answer length and structure. A student who understands the science and writes one line for a four-mark explain question has a technique problem, not a knowledge problem, and only marked scripts reveal it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every IGCSE science request from the creek corridor, and each suits a different stage of the two-year course.

Single-science weekly slot

One science, one tutor, one fixed weekly session across Year 10 and Year 11. This is the format that produces the clearest results, because the tutor knows one specification thoroughly rather than three approximately, and sees a terminology habit forming before it is marked.

  • A 60-minute slot in the Gulf Standard Time evening window
  • Past-paper questions from the correct syllabus code only
  • Marked scripts returned with the specific loss identified
  • Paused during school assessment weeks, not cancelled

Two or three sciences, separate specialists

Where a student needs support across the sciences, separate tutors for each usually beat one generalist. It costs the same per hour and the depth is markedly different, particularly between Physics with its calculation chains and Biology with its terminology precision.

  • A different tutor per subject, each matched to the syllabus code
  • Sessions spread across the week rather than stacked in one evening
  • One shared record of progress so nothing is covered twice
  • Dropped back to one subject as soon as the others are secure

Alternative-to-practical and exam technique block

Four to eight sessions on the skills that are examined but rarely taught: apparatus judgement, variable control, plotting, anomaly handling and command-word discipline. Cheap relative to the marks it moves, and almost always the highest-return block available in Year 11.

  • Worked practical papers from the student's own specification
  • Method improvement questions practised and marked
  • Answer length matched to mark allocation, checked every time
  • A re-marked script at the end of the block as evidence

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Jaddaf

01

First find out which syllabus your child is actually on

Before you look for a tutor, spend five minutes establishing what is being sat. Most Al Jaddaf parents cannot name their child's syllabus code, which is not a failing on their part; schools rarely volunteer it. But hiring a science tutor without it is like booking a translator without naming the language, and it is the single most common reason tutoring money is wasted on this subject in Dubai.

Three places hold the answer. The student's exercise book or revision guide usually carries the code on the cover. The school's curriculum page or the head of science will confirm it in one email. And if entries have been made, the statement of entry from the exam centre names the syllabus and the components precisely. Any of those takes a few minutes and settles the matter completely.

Why it matters so much is a question of examined content rather than difficulty. Cambridge Biology 0610 at Extended tier and Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 overlap substantially but are not the same examined subset, and the papers are structured differently. Pearson Edexcel 4BI1 covers broadly similar biology with a different paper split and a different balance of recall against data handling. A tutor teaching the wrong one of those three is not teaching badly; they are teaching a different course competently.

The table below sets out the routes you are most likely to encounter in this part of Dubai. Take the code to a prospective tutor and ask them to describe the paper structure from memory. A tutor who has taught it will do so without hesitating. One who asks you to send the specification is telling you something useful, and it is better to know in the first conversation than in the third month.

Core or Extended, and the ceiling nobody mentions

On the Cambridge science syllabuses there is a tier decision, and it carries a consequence families are often not told about until the entries are made. Core and Extended are not two levels of difficulty applied to the same paper; they are different papers drawing on different content, and the Core tier carries a grade ceiling. A student entered for Core cannot access the top grades regardless of how well they perform, which is a reasonable arrangement for some students and a quietly closed door for others.

The tier decision is usually made by the school in Year 10 or early Year 11, on the basis of internal assessment. That is sensible and usually right. It becomes a problem when a student's attainment changes after the decision, which is precisely what effective tutoring is supposed to achieve. A student who moves from borderline to comfortable in the autumn of Year 11, and who is still entered for Core, has gained nothing from the improvement in grade terms.

The practical move for an Al Jaddaf family is to ask three questions early. Which tier is my child provisionally entered for? When is the final entry decision made? And what would need to be true for that decision to change? Those questions cost nothing and they are the whole of what parents can usefully do about a tier ceiling. Asking them in November is useful; asking them in March is usually too late, because final entries have gone.

Edexcel's International GCSE sciences are single-tier, which removes the decision entirely and is one reason some Dubai schools prefer them. If your child is on 4BI1, 4CH1 or 4PH1 there is no tier to worry about. The trade-off is that the single paper set has to serve the full ability range, so the easier marks and the harder marks sit in the same paper and time management matters more.

03

How practical skills are examined when there is no coursework

  • Most IGCSE science routes in Dubai examine practical reasoning on paper, not coursework
  • The questions test judgement about method, not recall of content
  • Rarely taught as a distinct skill, so it responds quickly to a short block
  • Ask the school how practicals are assessed for your child's specific entry

Parents who sat GCSEs themselves often assume there is a practical coursework component carrying marks, and on most IGCSE science routes in Dubai there is not. What exists instead is a paper that examines practical reasoning without a laboratory: the alternative-to-practical component, where a student is shown an apparatus diagram, given a method and a table of readings, and asked to make judgements about it.

This component is strange and it is strangely underprepared. The questions ask which variable should be controlled and why, how to improve a described method, which reading is anomalous and what might have caused it, how to plot and what the gradient represents. None of that is content knowledge in the ordinary sense, so a student who has revised every topic can still arrive at that paper without a technique for it. A crowded school scheme of work rarely has room to teach it as a skill in its own right.

For a tutoring budget this is the best-value block in the whole qualification. The content is small, the examined skill is learnable, the marks are substantial, and almost nobody arrives prepared. Four to eight sessions working through practical papers from the correct specification, with every attempt marked, reliably moves marks in a way that another pass through the content does not. Ask any prospective tutor whether they teach this component specifically; a vague answer is the answer.

Where a school does run a practical component, the arrangement differs by board and by centre, so the school is the only reliable source on how it is assessed for your child. What a tutor can do either way is build the reasoning: controlled variables, repeats, anomalies, resolution of instruments and sensible improvements. That reasoning serves the examined paper, the school's own practicals, and the internal assessment work that follows at A Level or in the Diploma.

04

Four questions that reveal whether a tutor knows the specification

  • What is the paper structure for this exact syllabus code?
  • Where do students most often lose marks on that paper?
  • How do you teach the alternative-to-practical component?
  • What proportion of a session does the student spend writing?

You can establish in about ten minutes whether somebody has actually taught your child's science specification, and it does not require you to know any science yourself. The method is to ask questions whose answers are specific to the course rather than to the subject. A tutor who has taught the specification answers immediately and concretely. A tutor who has not gives you generalities about building confidence.

Ask first what the paper structure is for the code your child is sitting. How many papers, what each one contains, how long. Somebody who has taught Cambridge 0620 Extended knows this the way a driver knows their route. Ask second where students most often lose marks on that paper, and listen for whether the answer is specific. The useful reply names something diagnosable: unbalanced equations before a calculation, hydrogen bonding named without the molecules, unit conversion from centimetres.

Ask third how they handle the alternative-to-practical component, if the route has one. This question separates tutors sharply, because the component requires a different kind of teaching and many people simply skip it. Ask fourth what proportion of a session the student spends writing. The right answer for IGCSE science is most of it, and a tutor who has taught exam classes will say so without being prompted.

Then there is one question that is not about competence but about honesty: what will you do if my child is behind by March? A tutor who says they will prioritise the highest-yield topics and accept that some content will go uncovered is telling you the truth about what is possible. A tutor who promises to cover everything and secure a particular grade is making a promise nobody in this market can keep, and grade guarantees are not something any responsible provider offers.

05

What proximity actually buys, and what it costs

  • In-home market rate AED 180-500, against AED 150-300 online for a qualified tutor
  • One in-home hour costs a tutor roughly three hours of their day
  • Proximity narrows the candidate pool without improving syllabus match
  • Online delivery is one to one, screen-shared, and does not involve a home visit

Suppose a genuinely good tutor for Cambridge 0654 lives in Al Quoz and will travel to Al Jaddaf. The market rate for that is published: Bestimate records in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors across Dubai advertising AED 200 to 500. Against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, as published by Unitors at IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150, the premium is clear and it buys the journey.

The journey itself is the hidden cost. A tutor arriving at the creek for 17:00 leaves around 16:15 and is not free again until past 19:00, so one paid hour consumes three hours of their working day. That shows in the rate, and it also shows in flexibility: a session that needs moving cannot simply move, because the trip has already been committed to the day's plan. Families in Nad Al Sheba and Meydan see this most sharply, which is why in-home quotes further out sit at the upper end of the published range.

The larger cost is the one nobody prices. Restricting yourself to tutors who will drive to Al Jaddaf on a Tuesday evening shrinks the set of candidates to a handful, and nothing about that handful guarantees one of them teaches Co-ordinated Sciences 0654. You have optimised for the wrong variable. The thing that moves marks is whether the tutor knows the specification; the thing proximity optimises is travel time, which affects nobody's grade.

To be plain about what is and is not on offer: IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE. Teaching for UAE families is delivered one to one over live video, screen-shared, with tutor and student annotating the same apparatus diagram or the same data table. In-home visiting is a service we operate only in India. The in-home AED figures above are the market's published rates, quoted so you can compare them, not an offer we make.

06

The school cluster around Al Jaddaf and what it means for matching

  • No default science specification in this corridor; schools run a genuine mix
  • Read the KHDA inspection report before assuming the problem is your child's
  • Dubai private enrolment: 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25
  • KHDA confirmed no private school fee increase for the 2026-27 academic year

Al Jaddaf sits in an unusual position for a Dubai neighbourhood. It is not a single-school community. The creek corridor between Dubai Healthcare City and Ras Al Khor draws families towards IB continuum provision on one side, British campuses inland, Indian-curriculum schools in the older districts, and American provision across the water at Festival City. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with UK curricula at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian at 26 per cent, US at 14 per cent and International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent.

That spread has a direct consequence for anyone looking for a science tutor here. In a district built around one large British school, a local tutor has probably taught that school's specification. Around Al Jaddaf there is no such default. Two students living in the same tower may be on Cambridge Extended separate sciences and Edexcel Double Award respectively, and they need different teaching.

It also means the school's own position is worth checking before you buy anything. KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, inspects Dubai private schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Published inspection reports frequently identify the subject departments where attainment lags, which is free, specific information about whether science at your child's school is a general weakness or your child's individual difficulty. Those two situations call for different responses.

Dubai's intake continues to grow: the 2026-27 year adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. KHDA also confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a family budgeting tutoring, a flat fee year is the context in which that spending sits.

07

Exam series, entries and the calendar UAE candidates actually sit

This is where Dubai tutoring providers get things wrong most often, and the error is consequential because parents act on dates. Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only. A provider quoting a Dubai family February exam dates or a November entry deadline for a February sitting has handed them the wrong country's calendar.

Cambridge also allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones, and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. That is a real risk and it is entirely avoidable: the school's exams officer knows the centre's zone, and the correct timetable is the only one worth printing.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May or June and in November each year. As a verified example of how far entry deadlines sit ahead of papers, the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day. Pearson publishes provisional timetables well ahead of each series and those can be revised, so the live official timetable is the only version to rely on.

For planning purposes, the useful habit is counting backwards from the series rather than forwards from today. Final entries close months before the papers. Mocks sit roughly a term before. If a tier decision is in play, it is made before entries. A family that maps those four points onto a calendar in the autumn knows exactly when a tutoring block needs to start, which is almost always earlier than instinct suggests.

Getting started, and what happens if nobody fits

  • Send the syllabus code, a marked paper and the school name
  • A free trial lesson on your child's own past paper, before any payment
  • A clear no when no syllabus-matched tutor is free, rather than a substitute
  • Only the details needed for matching are collected, and they can be deleted

The sequence is short and the first step is the one that does the work. Send the syllabus code, the most recent marked science paper, and the school. From those three things a tutor can tell you what is actually wrong, which is usually more specific than the family expected: terminology precision in biology, balancing before calculation in chemistry, unit conversion in physics, or answer length across all three.

We then propose a tutor who teaches that specification, with their boards and codes stated rather than implied. A free trial lesson runs before any payment, working on a real question from your child's own past paper rather than a generic assessment. If the match is wrong you say so and we propose another, and nothing has been spent. That is the whole arrangement; there is no registration fee and no commitment attached to the trial.

On availability, we would rather be blunt than optimistic. Some combinations are genuinely scarce. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 taught properly, or a single tutor covering two sciences on different boards, may not have a free slot in the Gulf evening window during a busy term. When that happens we say so instead of quietly substituting a generalist at the same rate, which is the standard practice in this market and the reason families lose terms. Usually we can offer a different time, a tutor in another time zone whose hours overlap the UAE evening, or a start a fortnight out.

The information we ask for is limited to what the match requires: a parent's name and contact details, the student's year group, the subjects and the syllabus codes. That exists to find a tutor and arrange the trial lesson, it is not sold on, and you can ask for it to be deleted at any point; the privacy notice linked from every page explains how. We do not ask for a child's photograph, school report or grade history to arrange a trial.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Jaddaf

Al Jaddaf shares school routes and evening scheduling with the neighbourhoods along the creek and inland towards Meydan. These are the areas whose families book the same science slots.

Al Jaddaf

Mid-rise residential beside Dubai Healthcare City. Journeys home are short, so a 16:30 science session is realistic here, which matters for Year 11 students who fade badly after 19:00.

Culture Village

Creek-side towers and low-rise villas immediately north. Many households here have children on two different boards at once, so a tutor brief covering only one specification is a frequent source of confusion.

Dubai Festival City

Across the water, serving Deira International School and Universal American School Dubai. The Garhoud crossing at pick-up pushes a weekday science session to 17:00 at the earliest.

Business Bay

Canal-side towers minutes away, with working parents and fixed evenings. Weekend morning slots carry most of the exam-season revision for Year 11 students in this pocket.

Sobha Hartland

South of the creek, served by Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai. Larger year groups here usually mean three separate sciences rather than a Co-ordinated route.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Industrial frontage with residential pockets and Westminster School Dubai. A large share of Dubai's freelance tutors live in this belt, which is why creek-side in-home quotes vary so widely.

Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities near Kings' School Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Modern High School. Distance is the whole reason in-home science quotes here sit at the top of the published Dubai range.

Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Newer and lower density, with long school runs. Sessions start from 18:00 on weekdays, and most Year 11 revision happens in weekend blocks rather than midweek hours.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Find the syllabus code

Check the revision guide cover, ask the head of science, or read the statement of entry. Five minutes here determines whether every subsequent hour is spent on the right course. Without it, a tutor is guessing which of three plausible specifications your child is sitting.

  2. 02

    Send a marked science paper

A marked script shows the pattern in ten minutes: whether marks go on terminology, on calculation setup, on unit handling, or on answers too short for the marks offered. Those are four different fixes of four different lengths, and guessing between them is expensive.

  3. 03

    Get a code-matched tutor

We name a tutor who teaches that board and that syllabus, with the tier and the practical component stated. If the student is on Co-ordinated Sciences we say so explicitly, because teaching from the separate-science schemes wastes hours on unexamined content.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

The trial runs on a question from your child's own paper. You hear whether the tutor talks about the specification or about confidence, and the student decides whether the explanation lands. No payment is taken before this and nothing follows automatically.

  5. 05

    Review on re-marked work

Progress is judged on re-marked questions in the same topic, not on how the sessions felt. If marks have not moved after a block, the approach changes or the tutor does. That review is the step that prevents a year of pleasant sessions and a flat mock result.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by syllabus code, not subject name

Cambridge 0610, Edexcel 4BI1 and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 are three different courses with three different papers. A tutor is proposed because they teach yours, which is the variable that actually moves marks.

The practical paper taken seriously

The alternative-to-practical component is examined, learnable and almost universally underprepared, because a crowded school scheme has no room to teach it as a skill. It is the best-value block in the qualification and we treat it as one.

A test you can run yourself

Four questions on this page let you establish in ten minutes whether a tutor has taught the specification, without knowing any science. Use them on us and on anybody else you are considering.

Dates that are right for the UAE

UAE candidates sit Cambridge June and November; the February and March series is India only. Providers quoting Dubai parents February dates are working from the wrong country's calendar, and a parent can act on a wrong date.

Availability disclosed, not concealed

When no code-matched tutor has a slot in the Gulf evening, we say so and offer an alternative time, tutor or start date. Substituting a generalist at a specialist rate is how a family loses both the fees and the term.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Jaddaf: your questions answered

How do I find out which science syllabus my child in Al Jaddaf is sitting?+

Three sources settle it in minutes. The code is usually printed on the cover of the revision guide or exercise book. The head of science will confirm it in one email, and a school's curriculum page often lists it. Once entries are made, the statement of entry from the exam centre names the syllabus and every component precisely. Do this before contacting any tutor. Hiring a science tutor without the code is the most common way families in this corridor waste money, because Cambridge 0610, Edexcel 4BI1 and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 are three different courses with three different papers.

Is a tutor who lives near the creek better than one teaching over video?+

Only if they happen to teach your child's exact specification, and nothing about living nearby makes that more likely. Al Jaddaf is not a single-school community: the creek corridor draws families towards IB continuum provision, British campuses inland, Indian-curriculum schools in the older districts and American schooling across the water. Two students in the same tower may be on different boards. Restricting your search to tutors who will drive to the creek on a Tuesday reduces your choice to a handful, none of whom is guaranteed to know Co-ordinated Sciences 0654. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE.

What is Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 and does it need a different tutor?+

It is a Cambridge double-award qualification covering biology, chemistry and physics in one, counting as two IGCSEs, with content reduced relative to the three separate syllabuses. And yes, it needs a tutor working from the 0654 syllabus specifically. The examined subset is not simply the easier parts of 0610, 0620 and 0625, and the papers move between disciplines within a question set. A tutor teaching from the full separate-science schemes will spend paid hours on content that is not examined while skipping how the paper is actually structured.

Does the Core tier really cap my son's grade?+

Yes. On the Cambridge science syllabuses, Core and Extended are different papers drawing on different content, and the Core tier does not give access to the top grades however well a candidate performs. Schools usually decide the tier in Year 10 or early Year 11 from internal assessment, which is reasonable, but it becomes a problem if attainment improves afterwards. Ask three things in the autumn: which tier is he provisionally entered for, when is the final entry decision made, and what would need to be true for it to change. Asking in March is normally too late.

Are Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE sciences interchangeable for a tutor?+

No, though the underlying science overlaps heavily. The paper structures differ, the balance between recall and data interpretation differs, and Edexcel's International GCSE sciences are single-tier while Cambridge has a Core and Extended split. Students who move between boards mid-course, which happens regularly in Dubai when a family changes school, usually find the science familiar and the paper technique unfamiliar. That technique has to be retaught deliberately. Ask any prospective tutor to describe the paper structure for your child's code from memory; hesitation is informative.

Why does the alternative-to-practical paper matter so much?+

Because it is examined, learnable, and almost nobody arrives prepared for it. The questions show an apparatus diagram, a method and a table of readings, then ask which variable to control and why, how to improve the method, which reading is anomalous and what caused it. None of that is content recall, so a student who has revised every topic can still have no technique for the paper. A crowded school scheme rarely teaches it as a skill in its own right, which makes four to eight marked practical-paper sessions the best-value block in the qualification.

Should we use one tutor for all three sciences or three separate ones?+

Three separate specialists, where the budget allows, because the subjects fail for different reasons. Biology marks turn on terminology precision: writing that a substance moves in rather than naming diffusion down a concentration gradient loses the mark. Physics marks turn on chaining formulae and converting units under time pressure. Chemistry turns on balancing before calculating. A tutor strong in one is often merely adequate in another, and it costs the same per hour either way. Start with the subject where the marked paper shows the clearest pattern.

When do IGCSE science exams actually happen for a Dubai candidate?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only, so a Dubai family given February dates has the wrong country's calendar. Cambridge also allocates each centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that the correct zone timetable must be used, since it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May or June and in November. Your school's exams officer holds the zone-correct official timetable.

My daughter revises for hours and her science marks do not move. Why?+

Almost always because she is revising content while losing marks on something else. Three patterns dominate. Answers too short for the mark allocation, where a four-mark explain question receives one line: that is command-word discipline, not knowledge. Correct method applied to an unbalanced equation, which loses every subsequent mark. And unit conversion, where a value is given in centimetres and the relationship wants metres. None of these improves with more content revision, and all three are visible on a marked script within minutes, which is why a tutor should ask for one first.

How many sessions does IGCSE science support usually take?+

A single diagnosable technique fault, such as command-word discipline or practical-paper reasoning, is typically a four to six session block with a re-marked script as evidence at the end. Unfinished content takes roughly a session per topic plus practice. A student well below target across all components usually needs a weekly slot over a year rather than a block. Anyone quoting a session count before reading a marked paper is guessing, and that guess is how a four-session need becomes a twelve-session invoice. Ask for the diagnosis before agreeing hours.

Do science tutors in Dubai need a government permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The u.ae guidance states it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time via its smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published.

Can a tutor at my child's own school give private lessons?+

Not to their own students, in Abu Dhabi at least, and the principle is worth knowing wherever you live. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat the detail as press-reported and verify against the current policy document. The practical point for a Dubai parent is that a school teacher offering to tutor your child privately is a situation worth asking questions about rather than accepting gratefully.

What does online science teaching look like in practice?+

A shared screen, the student's own past paper open, and both people annotating it. The tutor marks an attempt live, shows where the mark scheme awarded nothing and why, and the student rewrites the answer on the spot. Apparatus diagrams, graphs and data tables all work better magnified on a screen than passed across a table. The practical work itself happens at school, where the equipment and the technician are. What the format changes is which tutor you can reach: anyone teaching your child's specification who is free in the Gulf evening.

What if you cannot find a tutor for our exact specification?+

We tell you. Some combinations are genuinely thin, particularly Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 taught properly, or one tutor covering two sciences across different boards, and in a busy term the right person may have no slot in the Gulf evening window. The standard practice in this market is to substitute a generalist at the same rate and say nothing, which costs a family the fees and the term. Instead we will normally offer a different time, a tutor whose time zone overlaps the UAE evening, or a start a fortnight out, and occasionally the honest answer is no.

Get the code first, then the tutor

The useful version of 'is there anyone near me who knows this syllabus' is a question about the specification, not the postcode. Find the code on the revision guide or from the head of science, send it with the most recent marked paper, and ask any prospective tutor to describe the paper structure from memory. That conversation takes ten minutes and tells you more than a page of credentials. Then take the free trial lesson on your child's own past paper and decide from what you see. Teaching runs one to one, live online, timed to the Gulf evening.
