IGCSE Maths Tutor in Bluewaters Island

The most useful thing an IGCSE maths tutor in Bluewaters Island can do is sit on the right day of the week. Maths homework is set on a fixed day and due on another, and a session placed between them works on live material while a session placed after the mark works on history. IB Gram teaches Bluewaters students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Session day chosen from your child's maths homework cycle
  • Thirty and forty-minute sessions genuinely offered, not just hours
  • Matched by syllabus code: Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1

IB & IGCSE in Bluewaters Island

The right day matters more than the right hour

Most tutoring schedules are built around a convenient time. For IGCSE mathematics that is a mistake, because the subject has a weekly rhythm set by the school: homework is assigned on a particular day, due on another, and returned marked some days later. A session's value depends enormously on where in that cycle it falls, and almost nobody asks.

A session the evening before the deadline works on live material. The student has attempted the questions, has met their own confusion, and a tutor can intervene while it matters. A session two days after the work was returned marked works on history: the questions are closed, the student has moved on, and the hour becomes a review of something nobody is invested in. The teaching is the same. The effect is not.

On Bluewaters Island this is more than an optimisation. The island is a compact residential community off JBR joined to the mainland by one road bridge, with no school on it. Every child commutes inland to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, The Greens, Jumeirah Park or Emirates Hills, and arrives home late enough that the week holds perhaps one genuinely usable weekday evening. If there is only one slot available, it had better be on the right day.

So this page starts with the homework cycle, then covers what maths work survives a tired six o'clock session and what does not, then the board and tier questions that determine what material the hours go into. The order is deliberate: a family with the right day and a slightly wrong revision emphasis will outperform one with a perfect plan on the wrong evening.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run in India only, and every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. There is a specific consequence for this page: because nobody travels, a session can be thirty minutes and can move to a different day when the school changes its homework pattern. An in-home arrangement cannot do either, since no tutor crosses the bridge in evening traffic for half an hour.

One calendar outranks the school's homework cycle, and it is the board's. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series for UAE candidates, so the day-of-week argument on this page operates inside a window that ends on a fixed date rather than a flexible one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and its November 2026 final timetable runs to 19 November 2026. Everything on this page was reviewed in October 2026. Where a timetable decides anything for you, open the board's own live PDF rather than any restatement of it, this one included.

One clarification before the detail. None of this assumes a struggling student. The homework-cycle argument applies just as strongly to a capable one, because the marks a capable IGCSE mathematician loses are overwhelmingly method marks and notational slips rather than gaps in understanding, and those are visible only in work they have actually attempted. A session on the wrong day will teach them topics they already know; a session on the right day will show them the four marks a week they are handing back.

At a glance

  • Maths homework runs on a weekly cycle: set, due, returned marked
  • A session before the deadline works on live material; after the mark it works on history
  • No school sits on Bluewaters Island, so the week holds roughly one usable weekday evening
  • Thirty focused minutes on the right day beats an hour on the wrong one
  • Cambridge 0580 Core is capped at grade C; Pearson 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher on 9-1
  • IB Gram teaches UAE students online one-to-one; UAE home visits are not offered
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three mathematics qualifications appear in Bluewaters households at this stage, and they are frequently confused. The difference between a tier and a separate syllabus is the one that causes most trouble.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Tiered Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C. Core covers number, algebra, geometry, mensuration, basic trigonometry, statistics and probability. Extended adds functions, harder algebraic manipulation, the sine and cosine rules, vectors and transformations. Each tier is assessed by two written papers at the end of the course.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, warning it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise. The zone governs study leave planning, so ask the exams officer for it alongside the syllabus code.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Tiered Foundation and Higher, graded 9-1, assessed by two written papers per tier. Higher tier content includes algebraic fractions, functions and their inverses, vectors and advanced trigonometry. Foundation tier carries a grade ceiling in line with Pearson's published tier arrangements for the qualification.

Pearson publishes provisional timetables a year ahead and revises them, so plan against the live official PDF. The results calendar matters locally twice a year: June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

A separate qualification rather than a tier, taken alongside 0580 Extended by a small strong cohort. Content covers functions, the quadratic discriminant, non-linear simultaneous equations, binomial expansion, trigonometric identities, differentiation, integration and kinematics. It is the closest thing to A Level Mathematics available at sixteen.

This is the one subject on this page that does not suit a short tired slot. It is abstract and demanding, needs a fresh student and a proper run at a topic, and belongs on a weekend morning. Local specialist supply is also thin, because the cohort in any one Dubai community is small.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Maths topics grouped by whether they suit a short weekday slot or need a weekend morning. This is the scheduling information that decides whether a plan survives, and no provider publishes it.

Method marks and visible working

All tiers

The largest avoidable loss in the qualification, because the mark scheme awards reasoning separately from the answer. Pure habit formation, which means it suits thirty minutes twice a week far better than an hour once, and it pays on both papers.

Bounds and estimation

All tiers

Upper and lower bounds produce more lost marks per question than any other number topic, usually because students round rather than bound. Mechanical, learnable in one session, and perfectly suited to a short tired slot.

Algebraic manipulation

Extended and Higher

Changing the subject where it appears twice, and simplifying algebraic fractions. Drills well in short bursts. The losses are almost always unwritten steps rather than misunderstanding, which is why this pairs naturally with method-mark work.

Quadratics

Extended and Higher

Factorising, completing the square and the formula. The recurring loss is using the formula where the question wanted completed square form for a minimum point, leaving the second part unanswerable. Needs a moderately alert student but fits a weekday slot.

Circle theorems

Extended and Higher

High-frequency and high-return, because the marks are for naming the theorem rather than reaching the angle. Short, self-contained questions that work well late in the day, and a reliable source of recovered marks.

Non-right-angled trigonometry

Extended and Higher

Sine rule, cosine rule and triangle area, including the ambiguous case where two answers exist. Needs more alertness than circle theorems because rule selection is a judgement, so better earlier in the evening.

Histograms and frequency density

Extended and Higher

Frequency density is the most misunderstood quantity in the qualification, and plotting raw frequency against unequal class widths loses the entire question. Conceptual to fix, then mechanical, so one alert session then short practice.

Conditional probability

All tiers

Tree and Venn diagrams without replacement, where students reuse the first denominator on the second branch. Needs concentration to establish and then drills well, so introduce it fresh and practise it tired.

Vectors and transformations

Extended and Higher

Column vector arithmetic is straightforward; describing a transformation fully is not. A rotation needs the angle, direction and centre, and two of three scores partially. Checklist-type work that suits a short slot.

Full timed papers

All tiers

Needs an uninterrupted block and real concentration, plus time to mark against the published mark scheme in the same session. This belongs on a weekend morning and never in a weekday evening after a bridge crossing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, defined by where they sit in the homework cycle. The day is the variable being chosen here, not the number of hours.

Pre-deadline slot

A short session the evening before maths homework is due, working on the questions the student has already attempted and got stuck on. This is the highest-value placement in the week because the material is live, the student is invested, and the intervention lands before the work is submitted rather than after it is marked.

  • Day chosen from the school's actual set-and-due pattern
  • Student attempts the work first; the session is not a substitute for trying
  • Thirty to forty minutes is usually enough for this placement
  • Method-mark habits built on the student's own current work

Post-return slot

A session shortly after marked work comes back, used when the problem is diagnostic rather than immediate: the student is making consistent errors they cannot see. The marked script is the material, and the work is identifying the pattern rather than finishing anything. Less urgent than the pre-deadline slot and more useful for a student who is quietly going wrong.

  • Marked script is the session material, not a textbook exercise
  • Errors categorised by topic, notation and timing
  • Running error log that carries week to week
  • Pairs well with a weekend paper session once a pattern is clear

Weekend morning block

A longer session for the work that cannot be done tired: full timed papers sat properly and marked in the same session, Additional Mathematics 0606, and any topic needing a sustained run. Most island families end up with one weekday slot on the right day plus this, which totals less than two weekday hours and achieves more.

  • Full papers sat under timing and marked against the mark scheme
  • Abstract topics introduced when the student is fresh
  • 0606 Additional Mathematics scheduled here as a rule
  • Keeps the weekday slot short enough to be sustainable

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bluewaters Island

01

Find the maths homework cycle, then pick the day

Ask your child two questions: which day is maths homework set, and which day is it due. Then ask when marked work usually comes back. Those three answers determine where in the week a session is worth most, and they take one conversation to establish. Schools differ, and some set maths twice weekly, which changes the answer again.

The pre-deadline evening is the strongest placement. The student has attempted the questions and met their own confusion, which means the session starts from a real difficulty rather than from a tutor's guess about what might be difficult. It also means the work goes in improved rather than being corrected after the fact, and the student sees the connection between the session and their own mark.

The post-return placement is the second-best and serves a different purpose. For a student making consistent errors they cannot see, the marked script is better material than live homework, because the pattern is visible across several questions. A student losing method marks throughout, or mishandling bounds every time, needs the diagnosis rather than the rescue.

The worst placement, and the most common, is a session two or three days after work was returned and before the next is set. Nothing is live, nothing is urgent, and the hour becomes generic practice. That is also precisely the slot families are offered when they ask for availability rather than asking which day would be best, and it is the main reason weekly maths tutoring so often feels like it is not doing much.

02

The honesty line inside the homework cycle

  • The student attempts the homework before the session, not during it
  • Teaching the method is legitimate; completing the questions is not
  • An untouched sheet invites the tutor to lead and teaches the student less
  • Formally assessed work gets feedback on the student's own drafts only
  • We reference official board material rather than redistributing it

Placing a session before a deadline raises a question that deserves a direct answer, because it is where well-meaning tutoring most easily goes wrong. A tutor working on homework due tomorrow must be teaching the method, not completing the assignment.

The distinction is practical rather than philosophical. If the student has attempted the questions and is stuck on question seven, teaching the technique that question seven requires and then having the student do it is teaching. Working through question seven while the student copies is not, and the fact that the student watched does not change what the teacher's mark will be measuring.

This is why we ask that the student attempts the work before the session rather than bringing it untouched. An untouched sheet invites the tutor to lead, and a student who watches a solution appear learns substantially less than one who has already failed at it and then sees why. It also means the session can be short, because the diagnosis is already done by the student's own attempt.

Where school-set work is formally assessed rather than practice, the line tightens further. A tutor teaches the skills, explains what the criteria reward, questions the approach, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of it. We also do not reproduce or distribute board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material, and we work from papers the school or student already holds legitimately.

03

Maths at six o'clock: what survives a tired slot

A Bluewaters secondary student arriving home between half past four and half past five has limited cognitive capacity for a session at six, and pretending otherwise is how good plans fail. The useful response is not to abandon the weekday slot but to put the right maths in it.

Habit work survives tiredness well, and in IGCSE mathematics habit work is where most of the recoverable marks sit. Writing the method step, converting units as a separate line, labelling the axes, writing the denominators on a probability tree before multiplying, stating the theorem used in a circle question: all of these are mechanical, all are worth marks on both papers, and none requires insight. A tired student can establish a habit perfectly well.

Conceptual work does not survive tiredness. Introducing frequency density, establishing why the ambiguous case of the sine rule exists, or working out how to approach an unfamiliar structured question all need a student who can hold several things in mind at once. Introduce those fresh and practise them tired, which is the opposite of how most schedules are built.

Additional Mathematics 0606 is the clear exception to any weekday placement. It is abstract and demanding, the cohort taking it is strong enough that the work is genuinely difficult, and a tired session achieves very little. Put it on a weekend morning or accept that it will go slowly. Full timed papers belong there too, because they need an uninterrupted block plus time to mark in the same session.

Why a local tutor cannot offer the day or the length

  • In-home arrangements are locked to hour blocks because travel must justify the trip
  • An online session can be thirty minutes without being uneconomic
  • Changing the session day is trivial online and breaks a route in-home
  • The AED 50-150 travel premium is the journey, priced in rather than itemised
  • For younger children needing presence, a local tutor can be the better answer

Everything above depends on two freedoms: choosing the day from the homework cycle, and choosing a length the student can actually use. An in-home arrangement on Bluewaters Island struggles with both, for reasons that are about geography rather than willingness.

On length, the arithmetic is simple. A tutor coming from the Al Barsha campus ring at five faces Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina approach, one bridge and then visitor parking in a residential tower, which is thirty to forty-five minutes each way. Nobody makes that journey for a thirty-minute lesson, so in-home arrangements are locked to hour blocks whether or not a tired fifteen-year-old can use sixty minutes. The published Dubai travel premium of roughly AED 50-150 an hour, visible in the gap between the in-home band of AED 180-350 and the online band of AED 150-300, is that journey priced in.

On the day, the constraint is scheduling. A tutor filling an evening with three island families has a route, and moving one family to a different day breaks it. So when a school changes its homework pattern in January, which happens, the family that needs to move from Tuesday to Wednesday finds they cannot, and the session stays on the wrong day for the rest of the year.

IB Gram does not offer UAE home visits, so this is not a comparison between two things we sell; it is why we only sell one here. For a younger child who needs an adult physically present, an independent local tutor across the Marina or JBR can genuinely be the better choice, and the hour-block constraint matters far less at that age.

05

Syllabus code and tier, because the hours need the right material

  • Ask for board, syllabus code, tier and series in writing, plus the Cambridge zone
  • Cambridge 0580 Core is capped at grade C; check against sixth-form requirements
  • Content emphasis differs between 0580 Extended and 4MA1 Higher
  • The tier decision is open in Year 10 and close to closed by Year 11
  • 0606 is a separate qualification and suits only a top-of-Extended student

Once the day is right, the content needs to be right, and that starts with one email to the exams officer asking for the board, the syllabus code, the tier and the series. In a school entering candidates with both boards the answer differs by subject, which is why a report card can show 9-1 grades beside A*-G grades without any error.

Cambridge 0580 is tiered Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C. Pearson 4MA1 Mathematics A is tiered Foundation and Higher on the 9-1 scale. Both assess by two written papers per tier, but content emphasis differs: Cambridge Extended weights functions, transformations and vectors, while Pearson Higher gives more attention to algebraic fractions and inverse and composite functions. A student revising from the wrong board's past papers is practising for an exam nobody is sitting.

The tier answer carries the hard consequence. A Core candidate cannot be awarded above a C however well they perform, and if a sixth-form entry requirement is a B or a grade 6, the tier has settled the outcome before revision begins. The decision is genuinely open in the first term of Year 10 and close to closed by the second term of Year 11, because Extended content never taught would have to be learned alongside revising everything else.

Also establish whether 0606 Additional Mathematics is in play, because it is a separate qualification rather than a tier and it is routinely confused with one. It suits a student comfortably at the top of 0580 Extended and is the best preparation for A Level Mathematics available at sixteen. For a student working hard for a B on Extended, the same hours are better spent securing that grade.

06

The mock term, when the cycle itself changes

  • Mock season replaces homework with revision, so the cycle logic has to be rebuilt
  • Ask for component marks rather than the mock grade before changing the plan
  • The weekend morning becomes the most valuable block for timed papers
  • Narrow the weekday slot to two or three identified topics
  • Move the slot permanently if arrival has shifted rather than tolerating late starts

Mock season breaks the homework cycle, and a plan built on it has to be rebuilt rather than continued. Homework gives way to revision tasks, school days lengthen with revision sessions so arrival moves later, and the material becomes past papers rather than exercises. The pre-deadline logic stops applying because there are no deadlines of the same kind.

What replaces it is the mock script. Ask the school for component marks rather than the grade, because the grade blends three unrelated problems. Clusters of blank or abandoned questions mean content gaps needing teaching in dependency order. Attempted questions marked low across the paper mean method marks and command-term misreads, which is the fastest thing to fix and where most recoverable marks sit. A script strong at the start and thin at the end is a pacing problem.

The weekend morning becomes the most valuable block in the week at this point, because timed papers are now the highest-return activity and they need an uninterrupted run plus marking in the same session. The weekday slot is better spent on the two or three topics the script identified rather than on broad revision, which feels productive and improves very little.

And if arrival has moved later, move the slot rather than accepting late starts. Three weeks of a session beginning twenty minutes late, followed by a quiet stop, is how most tutoring arrangements end, and they end in the term they were bought for.

07

What it costs at this session length

  • A 30-minute weekly session across a term is six hours: AED 900-1,800 at the qualified band
  • Two 30-minute sessions a week is twelve hours: AED 1,800-3,600 at that band
  • The qualified band of AED 150-300 is right for most IGCSE mathematics work
  • The specialist band is worth paying mainly for 0606 and late tier moves
  • KHDA confirmed no Dubai private school fee increase for 2026-27 on 22 May 2026

Because this page recommends shorter sessions, the cost figures need stating at that length rather than per nominal hour. The Dubai market bands, read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 rate table, are as follows.

Start with the band this page rules out. In-home one-to-one in Dubai runs AED 180-350 an hour and rises to AED 500 at specialist levels, and none of it is available in thirty-minute units, because the travel is the cost. Online, the figures read as follows. Budget or university-student tutors at AED 45-150 an hour, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. Qualified IGCSE subject tutors at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists at AED 200-450, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium or examiner-led from AED 500-650, with BartyED at AED 650. Halve each of those for a thirty-minute session and the half-hour at the qualified band costs roughly what a single in-home hour does at the bottom of its range.

Converted to the patterns here: a thirty-minute weekday session across a twelve-week term is six hours, or AED 900 to AED 1,800 at the qualified band. Two thirty-minute sessions a week is twelve hours, or AED 1,800 to AED 3,600. Adding a weekend morning block for papers and 0606 takes the term towards twenty hours. For most IGCSE mathematics work the qualified band is the right one, and the specialist band is worth paying mainly for 0606 and for a late tier move.

One piece of context matters for the term arithmetic above. The other half of a Dubai education budget is school fees, and for 2026-27 that half is not moving: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. A term of twice-weekly half-hours is therefore being added to a known figure rather than to a moving one, which is the right condition for committing to a full twelve weeks on a fixed weekday instead of buying hours ad hoc when a test appears. None of the rates set out here are IB Gram prices; they are what other Dubai providers publish. This page carries no price list, and the first session is a free trial.

Permits, verification and starting

  • Ask whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition permit and when it expires
  • No official fine schedule for unpermitted tutoring is published
  • Send the syllabus code, the tier, the homework days and a marked paper
  • The free trial runs at the day, time and length intended for the weekly session
  • No UAE home visits; home tutoring is an India-only service for us

Individual tutors in the UAE need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time through its app, website or e-services system, and u.ae states that tutoring without the permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Dubai private schools themselves are overseen by KHDA, which inspects annually and publishes ratings from Outstanding to Very Weak. Those reports are free and public. IB Gram is not KHDA approved, Cambridge accredited or Pearson approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is a specific licence for training institutes with physical premises, and has no UAE office.

To start, send four things: the syllabus code, the tier, which day maths homework is set and due, and a recent marked paper. The first two determine the material, the third determines the day, and the marked script determines whether the work is habit formation, a specific content gap or pacing. That combination makes the first session useful rather than exploratory.

Then take the free trial lesson, run at the day, time and length we intend the weekly session to be, so you find out whether it works before committing. No card is held, nothing renews, and if the match is wrong we rematch once at no charge. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots are a normal request and the slot is held. What we will not do, on the island or anywhere in the UAE, is send a tutor to your address; that service runs in India only.

Where we tutor

The commute that sets the maths slot

Where Bluewaters students travel to and what it does to the evening. These arrival times are what the homework-cycle plan has to fit inside.

Bluewaters Island

One road bridge, no school. Arrival for a secondary student is typically between four and half past five depending on the campus, which leaves one genuinely usable weekday evening in most weeks.

The Greens and The Views

Regent International School and the shortest run available to an island family. Students here are often home by four, which makes a five o'clock maths session realistic rather than theoretical.

Al Sufouh

Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School among others. Ten to fifteen minutes off-peak, twenty-five or more at the end of the school day, which puts a workable slot at quarter past five.

Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The main campus ring. Twenty to thirty-five minutes when school finishes, and school buses add stops at both ends, so half past five is the honest earliest start.

Jumeirah Park

Dubai British School Jumeirah Park and the start of the inland ring. Thirty to forty-five minutes when school finishes, pushing the first usable slot towards quarter to six.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. The longest commute island families run, and six o'clock is the realistic earliest weekday start.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Immediately across the bridge, where most mainland activities and tuition centres sit. Relevant because each activity there costs its duration plus a bridge crossing at both ends.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask which day maths is set and due

Two questions to your child, plus when marked work comes back. Those three answers decide where in the week a session is worth most, and they are the ones nobody asks for. Some schools set maths twice weekly, which changes the answer again.

  2. 02

Send the syllabus code and tier

One email to the exams officer: board, syllabus code, tier, series, and the Cambridge administrative zone. Cambridge 0580 Core is capped at grade C and Pearson 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher on 9-1, so the answer changes both the material and what grade is reachable.

  3. 03

    Send a recent marked paper

It shows whether the losses are method marks, a specific topic or running out of time. Those three need different work and different session lengths, and a report card only confirms that something is wrong, which you already knew before searching.

Trial at the real day, time and length

We run the free trial on the day and at the length we intend the weekly session to be, so you find out whether a Bluewaters evening slot actually works before committing. A short written note follows, no card is held and nothing renews.

    Rebuild when the cycle changes

Mock season replaces homework with revision and lengthens the school day, so the pre-deadline logic stops applying and arrival moves later. We rebuild from the mock script and move the slot rather than letting late starts erode a session that was working.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The day is chosen, not inherited

A session the evening before maths homework is due works on live material the student has already struggled with. One placed two days after marked work returns works on a closed assignment nobody is invested in. Same teaching, very different effect, and nobody else asks the question.

Thirty minutes genuinely offered

Habit work such as method marks, bounds and unit conversion suits thirty minutes twice a week better than an hour once, because the repetition interval matters more than the block. In-home arrangements cannot offer that length, since no tutor crosses a bridge for half an hour.

Tired work and fresh work separated

Habit formation survives a six o'clock slot after a long commute. Introducing frequency density or the ambiguous case does not, and Additional Mathematics 0606 certainly does not. We introduce concepts fresh and practise them tired, which is the reverse of how most schedules are built.

The homework honesty line stated

The student attempts the work before the session, and the tutor teaches the method rather than completing the questions. An untouched sheet invites the tutor to lead and teaches the student less, so we ask for the attempt first as a matter of method, not just of principle.

Matched by syllabus code

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different exams with different tiers, grading and content emphasis. We ask for the code before matching anybody, because revising from the wrong board's past papers costs a term rather than a session.

The slot can move when the school changes

Schools alter homework patterns, and mock season changes everything. Online, moving a session from Tuesday to Wednesday is trivial. An in-home tutor with an evening route across the bridge cannot do it, so the session stays on the wrong day for the rest of the year.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bluewaters Island: your questions answered

Does it really matter which day the maths session falls on?+

More than most families expect, and it is the cheapest improvement available. A session the evening before maths homework is due works on live questions the student has already attempted and got stuck on, so the intervention lands in real confusion and before the work is submitted. A session two days after marked work returns works on a closed assignment nobody is invested in, and becomes generic practice. Ask your child which day maths is set, which day it is due, and when marked work comes back, then place the session accordingly.

Is thirty minutes of maths tutoring actually useful?+

For a great deal of IGCSE maths work, yes, and often more useful than an hour. Habit work is where most recoverable marks sit: writing the method step, converting units as a separate line, labelling axes, writing denominators on a probability tree before multiplying, naming the theorem in a circle question. All of that is mechanical and benefits from short frequent repetition rather than long blocks, so thirty minutes twice a week beats sixty once. The exceptions are first teaching of a concept, full timed papers and Additional Mathematics 0606.

What maths work can a tired fifteen-year-old actually do at six?+

Habit and mechanical work, which fortunately is where the marks are. Method-mark discipline, bounds, unit conversion, circle theorem practice, transformation checklists and probability tree layout all survive a tired slot because they need persistence rather than insight. What does not survive is first teaching of frequency density or the ambiguous case of the sine rule, where a student has to hold several ideas at once. Introduce those fresh at the weekend and practise them tired on a weekday, which is the opposite of how most schedules are built.

Will the tutor just do my son's homework with him?+

No, and we ask for the work to be attempted before the session partly to prevent that. If he has tried the questions and is stuck on question seven, teaching the technique that question seven needs and then having him do it is teaching. Working through it while he watches is not, whatever it feels like, because the teacher's mark will measure what he can do alone. An untouched sheet also invites the tutor to lead, and a student who watches a solution appear learns substantially less than one who failed first.

Why can an online tutor offer half an hour when a local one cannot?+

Because the journey has to justify the trip. A tutor coming from the Al Barsha campus ring at five faces Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina approach, one bridge and visitor parking, which is thirty to forty-five minutes each way, and nobody makes that for a thirty-minute lesson. So in-home arrangements are locked to hour blocks whether or not a tired student can use sixty minutes. The published travel premium of AED 50-150 an hour, visible between the in-home and online bands, is that journey priced into the rate.

Our school changed its homework days in January. Can the session move?+

Online, easily, and that flexibility is worth more than it sounds. Schools do alter homework patterns mid-year, and a session that was placed perfectly in September can end up on the worst day of the week by February. An in-home tutor filling an evening with three island families has a route, and moving one family breaks it, so in practice the session stays where it is. Tell us when the pattern changes and we move the slot, which takes one message rather than a renegotiation.

Which syllabus is our daughter sitting, 0580 or 4MA1?+

Email the exams officer and ask for the board, syllabus code, tier and series in writing, plus which Cambridge administrative zone the school sits in. In a school entering candidates with both boards, mathematics can be on one and the sciences on another, which is why a report card can show 9-1 grades beside A*-G grades with nothing wrong. It matters because content emphasis and question phrasing differ, so revising from the wrong board's past papers is practice for an exam nobody is sitting.

Can our son move up from Core to Extended in Year 11?+

Rarely after the first term, and the ceiling is why it matters. Cambridge 0580 Core is capped at grade C, so a student at the very top of the tier cannot be awarded a B, and if his sixth-form requirement is a B or a grade 6 the tier has already settled it. A move in the second term of Year 11 means learning Extended content he never met alongside revising everything else. If it is being considered, ask the school for a timed Extended paper and decide from the script rather than from classwork.

Should Additional Mathematics 0606 go in the weekday slot?+

No. It is the clearest exception on this page. 0606 is a separate qualification rather than a tier, covering functions, the discriminant, binomial expansion, trigonometric identities, differentiation, integration and kinematics, and it is abstract enough that a tired weekday session achieves very little. Put it on a weekend morning. It also suits only a student comfortably at the top of 0580 Extended; for one working hard for a B, the same hours are better spent securing that grade instead.

What changes in the mock term?+

The cycle itself. Homework gives way to revision tasks, so the pre-deadline logic stops applying, and school days lengthen with revision sessions so arrival moves later. Rebuild from the mock script instead: ask for component marks rather than the grade, because blank questions mean content gaps, low marks on attempted questions mean method marks and command-term misreads, and a script that thins at the end means pacing. The weekend morning becomes the most valuable block, because timed papers are now the highest-return activity available.

What does a short weekly maths session cost across a term?+

A thirty-minute weekly session across a twelve-week Dubai term is six hours, which at the market band for a qualified IGCSE subject tutor online of roughly AED 150-300 an hour is AED 900 to AED 1,800. Two thirty-minute sessions a week is twelve hours, or AED 1,800 to AED 3,600. Specialists sit higher at AED 200-450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and for most IGCSE mathematics work the qualified band is the right one. Figures read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate Dubai rate table.

Which single habit recovers the most maths marks?+

Writing the method. The mark scheme awards visible reasoning separately from the final answer, so a student who rearranges an equation in their head and writes only the result forfeits marks they genuinely earned, on every paper and in every tier on both boards. It is a habit rather than a knowledge problem, which means short frequent practice establishes it in two or three weeks, and it is the first thing we work on for most students because the return per minute is higher than any topic revision.

Do you send a maths tutor to our apartment on Bluewaters?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. On this page that matters for two specific reasons: because nobody travels, a session can be thirty minutes, and it can move to a different day when the school changes its homework pattern. Independent home tutors do work across the Marina and JBR at roughly AED 180-350 an hour, and for a younger child who needs an adult physically present they can be the better choice.

Which exam sittings will a Dubai IGCSE maths candidate have?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series for UAE candidates, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and the November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, warning it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise, so ask which zone applies.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a permit?+

Yes. A MoHRE private tuition work permit is required, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists a two-working-day completion time through its app, website or e-services system. u.ae states that tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so distrust any amount quoted.

Right day, right length, right material

IGCSE maths support on an island with one bridge and no school comes down to three decisions in order. Which day, taken from the homework cycle rather than from whoever has availability. What length, which for habit work is usually thirty minutes rather than an hour. And what material, which needs the syllabus code and the tier in writing from the exams officer. Get those three right and a short weekly session will do more than two badly placed hours. Send a marked paper and take a free trial on the day you intend to use.
