IB and IGCSE tutors for Bluewaters Island families

Every school day for a child on Bluewaters Island starts and ends with a crossing. Families looking for IB and IGCSE tutors in Bluewaters Island are therefore not short of choice; they are short of hours. This page works out what the crossing leaves, what a single weekly hour can realistically cover in a term, and how to make a late session still work. All teaching is one-to-one over live video.

  • Slot chosen from measured arrival times, not from a template
  • Session length matched to what the remaining hour can absorb
  • Every lesson one-to-one over live video, never a home visit
  • Protected weeks and movable weeks agreed at the start of term

IB & IGCSE in Bluewaters Island

An island with no school on it, and a very narrow afternoon

Bluewaters Island is a built island off the JBR shoreline, a cluster of ten residential buildings with townhouses and penthouses, a hotel, a retail promenade and the observation wheel. It is linked to JBR by a footbridge and to the mainland road network by a vehicular bridge, and that is the whole of the connection. There is no school on the island, no bus depot and no space for one, so every school-age child leaves the island twice a day.

That single fact dominates tutoring here more than any academic consideration. Schools used by this community sit in Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, the Meadows, The Greens and Jumeirah Park, which means a crossing followed by a drive on the city's busiest corridor. A morning run is manageable because it starts early. The return is not, because school finish times across Dubai cluster inside one hour and Sheikh Zayed Road absorbs all of them at once.

The result is a short, late and unreliable window. A Year 9 child who finishes at 15:15 in Al Barsha may be back on the island at 16:20 on a good day and 16:50 on a bad one. A DP2 student at a school further inland can be later still. What is left is perhaps two and a half hours before homework, dinner and the point at which anything demanding stops working, and school homework has first claim on it.

The residential mix adds a second wrinkle. Bluewaters holds a high proportion of apartments that change hands or change tenants more often than a villa community does, along with households that spend part of the year elsewhere. That produces students who join a school in October or February rather than in September, and students whose term is interrupted by several weeks away. Both situations are manageable and both need a plan rather than improvisation, because a Diploma or an IGCSE course does not pause when a family does and the coursework deadlines carry on being set by the school.

Most tutoring advice ignores this and recommends an hour a week at a convenient time. That recommendation fails here in a predictable way: the slot is missed twice, moved once, and quietly dropped. The useful approach is to accept that the household has one or two genuinely usable slots a week, decide deliberately what they are for, and design the sessions so they are worth the hours they consume.

What follows is built on that. It covers what the crossing actually costs by destination, what a single weekly hour can and cannot cover across a twelve-week term, how spacing and retrieval make a late session productive, when a holiday intensive is the right purchase, why an island address widens rather than narrows school choice, and which weeks of the year must be protected. Every lesson is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India.

At a glance

  • No school on the island, so every child makes two crossings a day
  • Return journeys land between 16:15 and 17:30 depending on the school cluster
  • Most households have one or two genuinely usable weekly slots, not four
  • Session design matters more than session count when the window is short
  • All IB Gram UAE lessons are one-to-one on live video, with the time set by the household
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programmes run across the schools this community uses. The notes below describe what each one demands of the hours a student has left after the crossing.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Eight or nine subjects over two years, examined by terminal papers. Cambridge uses four-digit codes with a Core and Extended split that fixes the grade ceiling at entry; Pearson Edexcel uses codes such as 4MA1 with modular entry on some subjects. The work that moves marks in the final two terms is timed past-paper practice, which has no timetabled slot anywhere.

Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, and Cambridge examines IGCSE in the UAE in a June series and a November series only, the February series it also operates being offered to centres in India. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with a separate timetable for each, and states that candidates who use the wrong zone timetable are not its responsibility.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The programme assumes a large quantity of independent work, and for a student losing ninety minutes a day to travel that assumption is the problem rather than the content.

Confirm every IB session, upload and results date with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. This page publishes no IB dates, because none could be verified from the IB directly for this project, and the school's own internal deadlines bind a student weeks earlier in any case.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, totalling thirty-two and converted to a 1 to 7 grade. Tasks assess some criteria and not others, so a student who revises content before a task weighted towards process or communication sees no improvement at all.

MYP provision reachable from the island sits mainly in Al Barsha South and Al Sufouh. Because assessment is continuous, a slip shows up earlier than it would in an IGCSE course, which is useful for a household that has limited hours and needs to spend them on the right subject.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects requested most often from this community, described by the specific marks at stake rather than by syllabus content.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

IB HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency, with reasoning marks dominating: a correct answer without justification scores a fraction of the credit available. Higher Level adds a long problem-solving paper that needs stamina, which is hard to build in a session that starts after a long journey.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

IB HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology. Marks are lost presenting a test without its hypothesis, assumptions or a conclusion in context, and the exploration often repeats a textbook procedure rather than interpreting a result.

Physics

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0625 and 4PH1

The move from recall to derivation catches strong IGCSE students in the first Diploma term. Uncertainty handling in practical work is examinable and almost never deliberately practised, and at IGCSE the recurring loss is circuit reasoning under changed conditions.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0620 and 4CH1

Organic mechanisms and mole calculations account for most lost marks. Higher Level depth in energetics and kinetics cannot be absorbed in a final term, which is why the subject rewards a steady weekly slot more than most.

Biology

IB HL and SL, IGCSE 0610 and 4BI1

The volume of content pushes students into rereading instead of answering. Marks follow command terms precisely, and the fastest gain available in this subject is the habit of answering the verb that was printed.

Economics

IB HL and SL

Diagram precision decides grades, and an unlabelled axis costs marks the prose cannot recover. Higher Level adds quantitative questions, and the commentaries need published articles chosen to support the required analysis.

English A: Language and Literature

IB HL and SL

Paper one is an unseen guided analysis, so rereading set texts does not prepare for it. The individual oral needs a global issue and two extracts prepared months in advance, which suits a long steady arrangement rather than a late rescue.

English Language

IGCSE 0500 and 0990

Directed writing and comprehension under time pressure. The common loss is register rather than language: a strong piece in the wrong form for the stated audience loses marks before the English is assessed at all.

Business Management

IB HL and SL

Application to the stimulus rather than recall of frameworks earns the marks. The internal assessment depends on an organisation that will supply usable figures, a choice best made early in the first Diploma year.

Arabic as an additional language

MoE mandatory stream and IGCSE 0544

Taught in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab pupils. Students who join Dubai schooling later need script and vocabulary work the timetable cannot pace individually.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover what this community needs, and the choice follows from how much usable time the crossing leaves rather than from the subject.

One anchored weekly session

A single well-designed session each week in the household's best slot, with work set for the days in between. For a household with two usable slots and homework competing for one of them, one properly used hour beats two badly placed ones. The session is designed to leave the student with specific work rather than general reassurance.

  • A single slot chosen from measured arrival times
  • One named objective per session, checked at the end
  • Between-session work pinned to the school's next assessment
  • A written note so the household can see what was covered

Weekend-anchored arrangement

The main ninety-minute session on a Friday or Saturday morning, when nobody has crossed a bridge and nobody is tired, with a short weekday review if useful. This is the pattern that holds for Diploma students and for families whose afternoons are unpredictable.

  • Ninety minutes at a weekend morning slot
  • Optional twenty-minute weekday check-in
  • Work set for the week rather than overnight
  • Survives traffic, travel and school events better than a weekday slot

Holiday intensive block

A concentrated block across a term break with a defined objective and an end point: closing a specific backlog, building a foundation before a new course, or preparing one component. Not a general top-up, and not a substitute for term-time work.

  • A stated objective and session count agreed before the block
  • Daily or alternate-day sessions across one to two weeks
  • Short practice between sessions, measured in minutes
  • A written handover of what was covered and what remains

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bluewaters Island

01

What the crossing actually costs, by destination

Bluewaters is well connected for an island and that is not the same as being well placed for a school run. Everything off the island goes through the bridge, and the bridge feeds into the Marina road network and then onto Sheikh Zayed Road. In the morning this works, because school buses and family cars leave before the corridor fills. In the afternoon the whole city is moving at once and the island is at the end of the queue rather than the start.

The numbers that matter are not distances. A school in Al Sufouh is a short drive and a long journey at 15:30. A school in Al Barsha South is further and sometimes quicker, because the route avoids the worst of the coastal congestion. Families regularly discover after a year that a school they rejected as too far produces an earlier arrival home than the one they chose.

The practical step is to measure rather than estimate. Write down the time your child actually walks through the door, every day, for two weeks, including the days that run late. Not the school finish time, not the bus timetable. Two weeks of that gives an honest distribution, and the slot chosen from it will still be working in March rather than having quietly collapsed in October.

The table below is a planning frame rather than a promise, because traffic varies and your school's finish time is the dominant variable. Use it to see the shape of the problem: by the time a child has crossed back, changed and eaten something, the usable window is between two and three hours, and school homework has the first claim on it.

02

What one weekly hour can actually cover in a term

Families routinely over-estimate what a single weekly session achieves, and providers rarely correct them. Twelve weeks at one hour is twelve hours of contact. That is enough to do a small number of things properly and nowhere near enough to teach a syllabus, and being honest about which is the difference between a satisfied household and a disappointed one in March.

Twelve hours will close a specific recurring error, build one technique to the point of reliability, teach three or four discrete topics to a secure standard, or supervise one coursework component from question to final check. It will not cover a two-year syllabus, repair a two-year arithmetic gap while also preparing papers, or carry three subjects at once. Attempting the second list produces shallow coverage of everything and secure knowledge of nothing.

The implication for a household with one usable slot is that the subject choice has to be deliberate. The right subject is usually the one where a small intervention changes the most: a foundation subject that other subjects depend on, a subject where the student is closest to a grade boundary, or a component with a fixed deadline. The wrong choice is the subject the student dislikes most, which is the instinctive answer and rarely the highest-return one.

Where more than one subject genuinely needs work, the honest options are to buy more hours, to sequence the subjects across terms rather than running them together, or to accept a lower target in one. We will say which we think applies rather than quietly spreading twelve hours across three subjects and letting the results arrive in August.

03

Why a late session can still work, if it is built properly

A 19:00 session with a tired fifteen-year-old is not doomed, but it cannot be a lecture. Attention late in the day is poor for absorbing new explanation and acceptable for retrieval, practice and discussion of work the student has already attempted. That distinction is the whole design principle for an island household, and it is why the shape of the session matters more here than its length.

Three things make a late hour productive. The first is that the student arrives having already attempted something: a past-paper question, a draft paragraph, a set of problems. Reviewing attempted work is cognitively easier than receiving new content and produces more learning per minute. The second is retrieval rather than re-explanation, where the tutor asks the student to produce what they know before being told, which feels harder and works better.

The third is spacing. Material met once and never revisited decays, which is why a student can genuinely learn something in October and have nothing left by February. Short, repeated returns to the same material across weeks produce durable knowledge from the same total minutes. In practice that means ten minutes of the session spent on something from three weeks ago, every week, and ten minutes of daily retrieval between sessions.

None of this is exotic and almost nobody does it, because it feels less productive than covering new ground. A session that revisits old material looks like going backwards to a parent watching from the next room. It is the opposite: new content covered once at 19:30 on a Tuesday is the least durable learning available, and revisiting it three times is what converts it into a mark in June.

STUDY METHODS BY WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO AND WHEN TO USE THEM
MethodWhat it doesTime costBest used
Retrieval practiceBuilds durable recall by producing rather than reviewing10-15 minutesDaily, on material from previous weeks
Spaced return to old topicsPrevents decay of material learned once10 minutes per sessionEvery session, on something three weeks old

Rereading notesProduces familiarity, not recallUnlimited and unproductiveRarely; it is the default and the weakest option
New explanation late at nightLow retention at low attentionAn hour for little gainAvoid; use the slot for practice instead
04

When a holiday intensive is the right purchase

Island households travel, and term breaks are long. That makes the holiday intensive a tempting purchase and an easy one to get wrong. An intensive works when it has a specific, bounded objective: closing a named backlog, building the foundation for a course starting next term, or taking one coursework component from question to method. It fails when it is sold as a general top-up, because concentrated hours without a target produce coverage nobody retains.

The second condition is spacing. Ten consecutive daily sessions on new content violate everything in the previous section: material met once, never revisited, and then followed by six weeks of holiday during which it decays. A better shape is alternate days across two weeks with short practice in between, or a block followed by a weekly session when term resumes to consolidate what the block covered.

The third condition is honesty about the student. A teenager who has just finished a hard term may need a week of nothing before anything useful can happen, and an intensive beginning the day after term ends often buys resentment rather than progress. We would rather start in the second week of a break with a willing student than the first with an exhausted one.

Used properly, the breaks are genuinely valuable for this community because they remove the constraint the whole page is about. No crossing, no bus, no homework competing for the slot. A ninety-minute morning session with a rested student does several times the work of a 19:00 session in term time, which is the strongest argument for using a break at all.

Choosing a school by traffic direction, which an island address makes possible

One genuine advantage of this location is that it is not committed to a direction. A family in a distant villa community has two or three realistic school clusters. From Bluewaters, the Marina and Al Sufouh corridor, the Greens and the interchange, Al Barsha and Al Barsha South, and the Emirates Living schools are all reachable, which means the choice is unusually wide and can be made on criteria other than proximity.

The criterion most families under-use is the afternoon return rather than the morning run. Mornings are similar in every direction because everyone leaves early. Afternoons differ by twenty or thirty minutes depending on whether the route runs along the coast or inland, and twenty minutes a day is around sixty hours across a school year. That is more hours than a weekly tutoring arrangement provides in a term.

The second under-used criterion is upper year-group size. A school with an established sixth form runs more option columns, more Higher Level groups and more specialist teaching than a newer school with a strong primary phase, and KHDA inspection reports break performance down by phase and subject so that this can be checked rather than guessed. A strong overall band tells you about the whole institution; the phase and subject lines tell you about your child.

Dubai's supply is also changing, which widens the choice further. For 2026-27 the emirate adds seven new private schools, four following the UK curriculum and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 with enrolment up 6 per cent. KHDA also confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27 under an incentives package worth AED 1.5 billion, so a move considered now is not also a fee increase.

06

The specialist problem, and what this market charges

A visiting tutor coming to Bluewaters for a 17:00 lesson crosses the bridge at the worst hour, parks in a building they do not have access to, teaches for an hour and leaves into the evening traffic. That is three hours of their day for one paid hour, and the consequences are predictable: the rate carries the travel, the tutor takes fewer students, and your choice narrows to people prepared to make that journey at that time.

The second consequence costs marks rather than money. Subject depth is unevenly distributed, and the number of people who can teach Higher Level Physics, the quantitative half of Higher Level Economics, or Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level to a genuine standard is limited anywhere. Filtering that group by willingness to drive onto an island at five in the afternoon leaves very few. A parent insisting on a tutor in the room is choosing proximity over specialism.

The figures below are Dubai market rates collected in October 2026, each with its publisher named. They are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list, and the pattern is consistent across every level: in-home delivery sits above online delivery because travel is inside the price whether or not anyone itemises it. Bestimate's Dubai figures place home visits in a higher band than online lessons throughout.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, so this is not a choice we can sell either way. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, which means an hour costs an hour, the slot can move when the afternoon collapses, and the tutor is chosen on subject and level rather than on geography. On an island with one bridge, that last point is the argument that matters.

Which weeks must be protected, and which can move

A household with one or two usable slots cannot afford to lose them randomly, and it also cannot hold them rigidly across a year that contains travel, Ramadan and school events. The answer is to decide in advance which weeks are protected and which are movable, rather than negotiating each one as it arrives.

The protected weeks are narrow and specific: the four before mocks, the six before a public examination series, the fortnight before an internal coursework deadline the school has set, and the first week back after a long break. That last one surprises people and matters most, because material half-learned before a break has decayed over it and a review session in the first week back prevents a term of compounding confusion.

The movable weeks are everything else. During Ramadan the school day shortens and sessions move later, often after Iftar, which suits older students and suits younger ones less. School trips, sports fixtures and family travel can displace a session without harm if the displacement is planned. A session shortened to thirty minutes because of traffic is also far better than one cancelled, because cancellations are how these arrangements quietly end.

Writing this down in September takes ten minutes and is the single strongest predictor of whether an arrangement survives to the following summer. Most do not, and they almost never end in a decision: they end in a missed week in October, a moved week in November, and a pause over a break that nobody restarts.

08

Getting started from Bluewaters Island

Begin with two weeks of arrival times, because every other decision depends on them. Send those alongside the school, the exact syllabus code and level from the examination entry, the most recent marked piece of work, and the date of the next school assessment. For a Diploma student, add the internal deadlines the school has set, which sit earlier than anything a board publishes.

The first session is diagnostic. The tutor reads the marked work with the student and separates four problems that look identical on a report: content not known, technique not trained, timing lost under pressure, confidence gone. You receive a written summary naming which, and a recommendation on format and length based on your own arrival data rather than a standard template.

Where a household has one usable slot and two subjects that need work, we will say which subject should have it and why, and we will say if the honest answer is to buy more hours or to sequence the subjects across terms. Spreading twelve hours across three subjects is the comfortable answer and the one that produces nothing in August.

Three limits before any payment. We do not promise grades. We do not place tutors in homes anywhere in the UAE, so if you want someone at the door we are the wrong provider. We do not supply board past papers or mark schemes, which belong to the boards and are held officially by your school. And where a scarce specialism is involved we will tell you how long the match takes, and whether the only available specialist works hours that suit an early morning, before you commit.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Bluewaters Island

What distinguishes the areas around Bluewaters is the direction of the journey and what it costs at four in the afternoon.

Jumeirah Beach Residence

Directly across the footbridge and the island's nearest neighbour. Children at schools reached through JBR gain ten minutes over those heading inland, which is enough to make a 16:45 slot rather than a 17:15 one.

Dubai Marina

A few minutes south across the bridge, and the shortest route to the Marina and Al Sufouh school corridor. The internal Marina roads are the bottleneck rather than the bridge itself in the mid-afternoon.

Al Sufouh

Where several of the long-established schools used by island families sit. The morning run is straightforward; the return between 15:00 and 16:00 is the slowest regular journey this community makes.

The Greens and The Views

Inland across Sheikh Zayed Road, with established primary and secondary provision. A short distance that behaves badly at peak because of the interchange rather than the distance.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The widest choice of schools reachable from the island, including IB continuum provision. Also the longest afternoon, which is why Diploma students on this route often take later evening slots.

Emirates Living, The Meadows and The Springs

Villa communities inland with their own schools. Island families sometimes choose schools here for the upper year groups, accepting a longer journey in exchange for option choice.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Further along the same inland corridor. The journey is tolerable outside peak and poor within it, so households on this route tend to anchor their main session at a weekend.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Bluewaters Island

The Marina and Al Sufouh corridor

The closest established schools to the island, reached across the bridge and down the coast. Mostly British curriculum with IGCSE at sixteen, plus IB provision, and the shortest afternoon journeys available to island households.

  • Regent International School
  • Emirates International School Meadows

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Measure the return journey

Record the time your child actually arrives on the island for two weeks, including the late days. That distribution, rather than the school finish time, determines the slot and the session length that will still be working in March.

  2. 02

    Send the academic detail

School, exact syllabus code and level from the examination entry, the most recent marked piece of work, the next assessment date, and for a Diploma student the school's internal coursework deadlines.

  3. 03

    Diagnostic session

One online hour reading marked work with the student to establish whether the problem is content, technique, timing or confidence. The written summary names which, and recommends a weekday slot or a weekend anchor based on your arrival data.

  4. 04

Choose what the hour is for

With one or two usable slots, the objective has to be deliberate: one recurring error, one technique, three or four topics, or one coursework component. We will name the highest-return choice and say plainly what twelve hours cannot cover.

  5. 05

    Agree protected and movable weeks

Mark the four weeks before mocks, the six before an examination series, the fortnight before a coursework deadline, and the first week back after a long break as protected. Everything else can move, including through Ramadan.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Designed for a short window

With one bridge and no school on the island, most households have one or two usable slots a week. Sessions are built for that reality: attempted work reviewed, retrieval rather than lecture, and spacing built in so a late hour still produces durable learning.

Honest about what an hour buys

Twelve weekly hours will close one recurring error, build one technique, teach three or four topics, or supervise one component. It will not teach a syllabus or carry three subjects, and we say so before you buy rather than in March.

Specialists, because nobody crosses a bridge

Online delivery means the tutor is chosen for subject, level and board rather than for willingness to drive onto an island at five in the afternoon. For Higher Level sciences and quantitative subjects that is the difference between a specialist and whoever is free.

A calendar decided in advance

Protected weeks, movable weeks and Ramadan timing are agreed in September. Arrangements here almost never end in a decision; they end in attrition, and anticipating the year is what prevents it.

Nothing asserted without a source

Every AED figure names its publisher and the month collected, every board date names the board that set it, and where a date could not be verified the page says so. No grade promises, no invented statistics, no claimed accreditation from any regulator or board.

Student and parent reviews

What students and parents say about working with IB Gram

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bluewaters Island: your questions answered

How much of the afternoon does the crossing actually take?+

Enough to change what is possible. Everything off the island runs through the bridge into the Marina road network and onto Sheikh Zayed Road, and the afternoon return coincides with every school in Dubai finishing inside the same hour. Depending on the school cluster, children arrive back between roughly 16:15 and 17:40. After changing and eating, the usable window is two to three hours, with school homework having first claim, which is why most households here realistically have one or two tutoring slots a week rather than four.

Why does measuring arrival times matter more than picking a convenient slot?+

Because a slot that does not fit gets missed, then moved, then abandoned, and almost every failed tutoring arrangement in this community died that way rather than from poor teaching. Two weeks of recorded arrival times, including the late days, gives an honest distribution instead of an estimate. A slot chosen from that data survives the year. One chosen because it sounds reasonable collapses in October, usually after two missed sessions nobody intended to miss.

Is a 19:00 session with a tired teenager worth paying for?+

Yes, if it is built for the time of day. Late attention is poor for absorbing new explanation and acceptable for retrieval, practice and discussion of work already attempted. So the session should start from something the student has tried, use questioning rather than re-explanation, and spend ten minutes revisiting material from three weeks earlier. A late hour used that way produces durable learning. A late hour spent on new content at low attention produces very little, however well it is taught.

What can twelve hours of tutoring realistically achieve in a term?+

One of the following, done properly: closing a specific recurring error, building one technique to the point of reliability, teaching three or four discrete topics securely, or supervising one coursework component from question to final check. It cannot teach a two-year syllabus, repair a long-standing arithmetic gap while also preparing papers, or carry three subjects at once. Spreading twelve hours across three subjects is the comfortable option and the one that changes nothing by August.

If we can only afford one subject, which should it be?+

Usually not the one your child dislikes most, which is the instinctive answer. The highest-return choice is the subject where a small intervention changes the most: a foundation subject other subjects depend on, a subject where the student sits closest to a grade boundary, or a component with a fixed school deadline. We will name which applies after reading marked work, and if the honest answer is that two subjects genuinely need hours, we will say that rather than pretending one slot covers both.

What is spacing and why would a tutor spend time on old topics?+

Material met once and never revisited decays, which is why a student can learn something securely in October and have nothing left by February. Short repeated returns to the same material across weeks produce durable knowledge from the same total minutes. In practice that means around ten minutes of each session spent on something three weeks old. It looks like going backwards to a parent watching from the next room, and it is the step that converts a lesson into a mark in June.

Does rereading notes count as revision?+

Barely. Rereading produces familiarity, which feels like knowledge and is not the same thing. The student recognises the material and cannot produce it under examination conditions. Retrieval practice, where the student writes down or says what they know before checking, feels harder and works considerably better. Self-marking a timed paper against a published scheme is better still, because it teaches where marks actually sit in an answer. Rereading is the default because it is comfortable, not because it works.

Is a holiday intensive a good use of a term break?+

With a bounded objective, yes, and it is particularly valuable here because a break removes the crossing, the bus and the homework competing for the slot. A rested student in a morning session does several times the work of a tired one at 19:00. The conditions are a specific target, alternate days rather than ten consecutive sessions, short practice in between, and a start in the second week of a break rather than the day after term ends.

Should we do anything academic over the long summer?+

A small amount, well placed. For a student entering an examination year, four or five sessions spread across the weeks with short practice in between protects content that would otherwise need relearning in September. Twenty sessions in August is not better; it produces diminishing returns and resentment. The target is maintenance rather than progress: keep the hardest topics warm, keep arithmetic or language fluency ticking, and avoid starting the year from behind.

Can a tutor come across to the island?+

Not through IB Gram. Home visits are a service we operate only in India, and every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video. On an island with a single road link that is the better arrangement twice over. A visiting tutor spends around three hours of their day for one paid hour, which sits inside the rate however it is itemised, and the people willing to make that journey at five in the afternoon are a small subset of the specialists available.

Does an island address limit our choice of school?+

The opposite, in practice. Because the island is not committed to a direction, the Marina and Al Sufouh corridor, the Greens and the interchange, Al Barsha and Al Barsha South, and the Emirates Living schools are all reachable. The criterion most families under-use is the afternoon return rather than the morning run, which varies by twenty or thirty minutes depending on direction. Twenty minutes a day is around sixty hours a year, more than a term of weekly tutoring provides.

Is Dubai adding school places we should know about?+

Yes. For the 2026-27 academic year Dubai adds seven new private schools, four following the UK curriculum and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six schools opened during 2025-26 with enrolment rising 6 per cent. KHDA also confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in the emirate would not rise for 2026-27, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. A move considered now therefore does not also carry a fee increase.

Should a session be shortened or cancelled when traffic is bad?+

Shortened, every time. Thirty minutes of focused work on the planned objective is worth far more than a cancellation, because cancellations are how arrangements end in this community: one missed week, one moved week, then a quiet stop. We agree the rule at the outset so nobody is deciding under pressure, and the written note records what was not reached so it goes first in the following session.

Which weeks of the year should never be moved?+

Four: the four weeks before mocks, the six before a public examination series, the fortnight before an internal coursework deadline the school has set, and the first week back after a long break. That last one is the surprise and often matters most, because material half-learned before a break decays over it, and one review session in the first week back prevents a term of compounding confusion that otherwise looks like a new academic problem.

What will IB Gram not do or claim for an island family?+

We make no promises about grades or points totals and publish no success statistics we cannot support with a sample size, date and method. We send nobody to a UAE address. We will not write, rewrite, translate or complete any part of an assessed component. We do not distribute board past papers or mark schemes. And we hold no permit, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operate no UAE office.

Decide what the one hour is for

On an island with a single road link and no school, the scarce thing is time rather than choice. Record two weeks of actual arrival times, send them with the syllabus code and the last marked piece of work, and one diagnostic hour online will tell you what the real problem is, which slot and session length your afternoon supports, and what twelve hours this term can honestly achieve. If two subjects need work and only one slot exists, we will tell you which should have it and why, and whether the sensible answer is more hours, a weekend anchor, or sequencing the subjects across two terms.
