IGCSE Science Tutor in Bluewaters Island

Science is the subject where tutoring bills triple without anybody deciding that they should. A family looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Bluewaters Island is often quoted three weekly sessions, one per subject, when component marks would have named a single priority. This page is the arithmetic. IB Gram teaches Bluewaters students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Priority set from component marks before any sessions are quoted
  • Sequential blocks offered instead of three concurrent tutors
  • Market AED figures published with their source and the month read
  • Free trial lesson first, no card held, nothing renews on its own

IB & IGCSE in Bluewaters Island

Three subjects, one bill, and nobody doing the arithmetic

Science is the only part of the IGCSE curriculum where a family can accidentally triple their tutoring spend. A student sitting biology, chemistry and physics as separate awards has three syllabuses, three sets of papers and three teachers at school, so when a report card disappoints, the natural response is to arrange support in each. Three weekly sessions at the Dubai market band for a qualified subject tutor, roughly AED 150-300 an hour, is AED 5,400 to AED 10,800 across a twelve-week term.

Sometimes that is the correct purchase. Usually it is not, and the way to tell is cheap: ask the school for component marks across all three subjects rather than the overall grades. If the losses look similar in all three, the problem is command terms, graph skills and time allocation, which is one intervention of four to six hours that pays in three sets of papers. If one subject is clearly worse, a single six to eight week block there and a reassessment costs a third as much and usually achieves more.

The award route changes the arithmetic before any of that. Cambridge Combined Science is a single award at reduced depth. Coordinated Sciences, syllabus 0654, is a double award covering all three at intermediate depth. The separate sciences, Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625, are three full awards. Pearson has its own equivalents, including Science Double Award alongside separate 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Most families do not know which they have, and it determines whether one tutor can plausibly cover the ground or three are genuinely needed.

Then there is the practical route, which is a cost question too. Cambridge syllabuses offer a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, and the school chooses. The paper version is among the most learnable components in the whole qualification, with question types that repeat, which makes a short targeted block unusually good value. The practical test needs lab rehearsal the school has to provide and a tutor cannot sell you.

Every AED figure here was read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 Dubai rate table, and each is attributed. They describe the market, not our price list. We publish no price list on these pages, because the honest number depends on the diagnosis and on which award route is in play.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run in India only, and every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. On a cost page the relevant detail is that Bluewaters is reached by one road bridge: the gap between the published in-home band of AED 180-350 and the online band of AED 150-300 is the evening journey, and with three subjects to cover it is a gap that compounds.

Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences

A double award covering biology, chemistry and physics in one integrated syllabus, producing two grades. Content depth sits between Combined Science and the separate sciences, and each paper spans all three disciplines rather than examining them separately.

The cost implication here is specific and favourable. Because every paper spans all three sciences, a single weak discipline drags every paper, which means one targeted block with a specialist in that discipline lifts the whole award. A Coordinated candidate almost never needs three tutors, and being told they do is a sign the diagnosis was never done.

Cambridge IGCSE separate sciences

Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 taken as three full awards, each tiered Core and Extended with Core capped at grade C. Content depth is greatest here, each subject has its own papers plus a practical component, and three awards means three grades and substantially more revision.

This is where the three-tutor default takes hold, and where sequential blocks save the most. Three subjects also means a timetabling problem in the same study leave, which is planning work rather than teaching work and should not be sold as three separate weekly commitments without a component-mark diagnosis first.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences

Pearson offers Science Double Award alongside separate Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1, graded 9-1 and untiered in the International GCSE sciences. Practical skills are assessed within the written papers rather than through a separate practical component.

Because practical skills sit inside the written papers, there is no discrete practical block to buy or skip, and the skills appear wherever they appear. That changes the cost profile: a short block on graph work, variable control and evaluation phrasing pays across every paper rather than being confined to one component.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science work with the band each piece needs and whether it pays in one subject or three. The last column is what decides a fixed budget, and no provider in this market publishes it.

Command terms across the sciences

All routes

State wants a fact, describe wants an account, explain wants a named reason, compare needs both items in the same statement. Pays in all three subjects and every paper, which makes it the cheapest intervention available at four to six hours in the qualified band.

Graph and table skills

All routes

Axes labelled with quantity and unit, scales using most of the grid, a best-fit line drawn as a line, a gradient named as a physical quantity. Sits between topics, badly taught nearly everywhere, and pays in all three subjects at once.

Variable control and evaluation phrasing

All routes

Independent, dependent and controlled variables with the control explained rather than listed, plus limitations named instead of human error apologised for. Mark-scheme phrasing that transfers across every practical-skill question on any route.

Physics: electricity and circuits

Core and Extended

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1. Parallel resistance using reciprocals, and explaining a brightness change by naming the quantity that changed. Single-subject work, but high yield within it and cheap to fix.

Physics: forces, moments and motion

Core and Extended

Speed, acceleration, moments and pressure. Moments questions are lost on an omitted distance from the pivot or mixed units. Mechanical and suited to short sessions at the lower bands.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

Extended and separate routes

Relative formula mass, moles, concentration and reacting masses. The gate in chemistry, because a slow student loses marks across the whole paper. Pure drill, so the budget band is adequate and the yield is high.

Chemistry: electrolysis and organic

Core and Extended

Products at each electrode, half equations with balanced charges, homologous series and addition. Half equations are lost on unbalanced charges, which is notation rather than understanding.

Biology: transport and homeostasis

Core and Extended

Xylem and phloem, transpiration, the circulatory system, temperature and glucose control. Negative feedback needs receptor, coordinator, effector and correction named in order, and most students supply two of four.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

Core and Extended

Monohybrid crosses, genetic diagrams, variation and selection. Crosses are lost on undefined allele symbols, which the mark scheme requires, and on omitting the phenotype ratio when it is asked for.

Broad three-subject revision, final weeks

All routes

The lowest-yield and most expensive purchase in the subject. By that stage the recoverable marks are in command terms, graph skills and two or three named topics taken from a mock script, not in covering three syllabuses again.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy science support across three subjects, in ascending order of cost. The first is the right answer for most students and the last is what most are offered.

Shared-skills block, one tutor

Four to six hours on command terms, graph and table skills, variable control and evaluation phrasing, bought once and paying in all three sciences. Where component marks show similar losses across the subjects, this is the entire diagnosis and the entire purchase, and it costs roughly a tenth of three concurrent weekly arrangements.

  • Command terms taught from the published definitions, not paraphrased
  • Graph skills drilled: axes, scale, best fit, gradient as a named quantity
  • Variable control phrased the way the mark scheme awards
  • One tutor, one block, a written finish date

Sequential single-subject blocks

One subject at a time for six to eight weeks, priority set from component marks, then reassess before deciding whether a second block is needed. Twelve to sixteen hours a term rather than thirty-six, and the reassessment frequently shows that the second block is unnecessary because the shared skills had been the real problem.

  • Priority chosen from component marks, not from anxiety
  • Specialist in the chosen discipline rather than a general science tutor
  • Written review at the end of each block before committing to another
  • Nothing renews automatically between blocks

Three concurrent tutors

One weekly session in each of biology, chemistry and physics, with separate specialists working to a shared written schedule. Occasionally correct, for a student genuinely weak in all three with time to use it, and it is the option we propose last rather than first because the diagnosis rarely supports it.

  • Only after component marks show genuine weakness in all three
  • Shared written plan so command-term work is not bought three times
  • Sessions staggered across the week rather than stacked on two evenings
  • Reviewed at four weeks with an explicit option to drop to one subject

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bluewaters Island

01

The three-subject arithmetic, done properly

Start with the number nobody puts on a page. A Dubai term is roughly twelve weeks. Three weekly one-hour sessions is thirty-six hours. At the market band for a qualified IGCSE subject tutor online, roughly AED 150-300 an hour with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150, that is AED 5,400 to AED 10,800 for one term. Across Year 10 and Year 11 at that rate it becomes the largest discretionary education cost most families carry.

Now the alternatives. A shared-skills block of four to six hours on command terms, graph work and evaluation phrasing is AED 600 to AED 1,800 and pays in all three subjects, because the same mark-scheme habits are being tested in every paper. A single six to eight week subject block is twelve to sixteen hours, or AED 1,800 to AED 4,800. Both of those are available before anybody commits to the thirty-six-hour version.

The diagnosis that chooses between them costs nothing. Ask the school for component marks across all three sciences rather than the overall grades. Losses that look similar in all three mean shared skills. One subject clearly worse means a single block. Genuine weakness in all three, which does occur, means the larger commitment is justified, and in that case it should be staggered across the week rather than stacked on two evenings.

On Bluewaters the arithmetic gets sharper, because an in-home arrangement multiplies the travel premium by three. The published gap between in-home at AED 180-350 and online at AED 150-300 is the journey, and three tutors crossing one bridge in evening traffic is three premiums on a week that, on this island, has room for perhaps one weekday session anyway.

02

What the award route does to the bill

The award route is the first thing to establish and it changes the cost logic substantially. Email the exams officer and ask for the board, the syllabus code per science, the tier where one applies and the series, in writing. Most Bluewaters families cannot answer this from memory, and the answer determines whether one tutor can cover the ground or three are genuinely needed.

Coordinated Sciences 0654 is the cheapest route to support well, which is counterintuitive. Because every paper spans biology, chemistry and physics, a single weak discipline drags every paper, so one targeted block with a specialist in that discipline lifts the entire double award. A Coordinated candidate who is told they need three tutors is being quoted without a diagnosis.

Combined Science is cheaper still in principle, since content depth is reduced across all three, though it carries a different cost later: many Dubai sixth forms prefer separate sciences for A Level science routes, and a student intending A Level chemistry from Combined Science may find they have not covered material the course assumes. That is a curriculum decision with a financial tail, and it belongs in Year 10 rather than Year 12.

The separate sciences are the most expensive to support, and legitimately so: three full syllabuses, three sets of papers and three times the revision. But the shared-skills argument applies with more force here, not less, because command-term and graph work bought once pays in three separate awards rather than two. The expensive mistake is buying three content tutors before buying the one shared-skills block.

Shared skills: buy once, pay in three papers

  • Compare questions need both items in one statement, not two separate accounts
  • Axes carry quantity and unit; scales should use most of the grid
  • Best fit is a line, never joined dot to dot
  • A gradient must be named as a physical quantity to earn the interpretation mark
  • Evaluation names a limitation; it does not apologise for human error

This is the single best-value purchase in IGCSE science and it is almost never offered, because it does not look like a subject. Command terms, graph and table skills, variable control and evaluation phrasing are tested in biology, chemistry and physics alike, by the same mark schemes using the same language, and a student who is weak in them is losing marks in all three papers simultaneously.

Command terms first. State wants a fact and no reasoning. Describe wants an account of features or a sequence. Explain wants a reason or mechanism named. Suggest wants a plausible answer where more than one is defensible. Calculate wants working shown. Compare needs both items addressed in the same statement, which is where students most often score zero on a question they understood completely, by writing two separate paragraphs.

Graph skills next, and they are badly taught almost everywhere because they sit between topics rather than inside one. Axes labelled with quantity and unit. Scales chosen so the points occupy most of the grid, since a cramped plot loses accuracy marks on reading values. A line of best fit drawn as a line rather than joined dot to dot, which is a different claim about the data. A gradient calculated and then named as a physical quantity, so the interpretation mark can be awarded.

Then variable control and evaluation phrasing. Independent, dependent and controlled variables, with the control explained rather than listed, and limitations named rather than human error apologised for. Four to six hours covers all of this at the qualified band, which is AED 600 to AED 1,800, and the return appears across every science paper the student sits.

04

The practical route, and whether it needs paid help

Cambridge science syllabuses offer two practical assessment routes and the school chooses which candidates sit. One is a practical test performed under exam conditions. The other is an alternative-to-practical paper assessing the same skills on paper: recognising apparatus from a diagram, identifying variables, completing a results table, plotting, drawing a line of best fit, calculating a gradient and evaluating a method.

The cost implications differ sharply. The alternative-to-practical paper is among the most learnable components in the whole qualification, because the question types repeat across series and the mark scheme rewards specific phrasing. A short targeted block of four to six hours on past papers of that component is genuinely good value, and it overlaps almost entirely with the shared-skills work above, which means one purchase often covers both.

The practical test is different. It needs rehearsal with apparatus, which the school must provide and which no tutor can sell you. What a tutor can do is drill the recording and processing that happens alongside the practical work, and make sure the student is not meeting the results table format for the first time under exam conditions. Beyond that, lab time is the school's responsibility and a family should be asking the department for it rather than buying a substitute.

Pearson International GCSE sciences take a third approach, assessing practical skills within the written papers. There is no discrete component to prepare for, which means the skills appear wherever they appear and the shared-skills block is the only sensible preparation. Ask the exams officer which route applies before buying anything described as practical preparation.

Spending a fixed budget well

Suppose a family decides on a number, say AED 3,000 for the term, and wants it spent as well as possible across three sciences. That is a real constraint rather than a hypothetical, and the allocation below is what we would actually recommend.

First AED 600 to AED 1,800: the shared-skills block, four to six hours at the qualified band. Command terms, graph and table work, variable control and evaluation phrasing. This is bought regardless of the diagnosis, because almost no student in this market is strong in all four and the return appears in three papers.

Remaining AED 1,200 to AED 2,400: a single subject block of six to twelve hours in whichever science the component marks identify, with a specialist in that discipline rather than a general science tutor. For chemistry that usually starts with mole drill, which could be bought even cheaper at the budget band from AED 45 an hour if the budget is tight. For physics it starts with explanation structure. For biology it starts with command-term precision and the negative feedback sequence.

What that allocation deliberately excludes is broad revision across three syllabuses, which is what the same money buys if spread across three weekly sessions for a month. It also excludes the premium band entirely, because at IGCSE level there is very little in the sciences that a qualified subject teacher cannot teach as well as an examiner. Spending at AED 500-650 an hour here is the clearest overspend available in this part of the market.

Group science classes and what they actually save

  • Group classes are good value for content delivery and broad revision
  • They move at the average pace, so drill-type work suffers
  • Individual diagnosis of command-term losses does not happen in a group
  • A mixed-route group teaches to neither depth properly
  • Add two bridge crossings per class when comparing the true cost

Tuition centres across the Marina, JBR and JLT run group science classes, and for a family facing three subjects the saving is the most attractive in this market. A group of four or six working through a topic with a teacher at the board costs a fraction of one-to-one per student, and for content delivery it is a reasonable use of everybody's time.

The honest limits are three. Group teaching moves at the average pace, so the students who need the most help get the least, which is particularly damaging for drill-type work like mole calculations where the slowest student is precisely the one who needed the repetition. It cannot do individual diagnosis, so a student losing marks to command-term misreads will not have that identified in a group. And a mixed-route group, with Coordinated and separate-science candidates together, teaches to neither depth properly.

Where it does work well is as a replacement for broad content revision, which is the thing this page recommends against buying one-to-one anyway. If a family wants the syllabus covered again before mocks, a well-run group class is the sensible way to buy that, at a fraction of the individual cost.

Add travel honestly when comparing. A group class in Al Barsha from Bluewaters is the fee plus two bridge crossings in evening traffic, which for a Year 11 student is most of an evening. Two such commitments a week, for two subjects, and the week has no capacity left for anything else, which is a cost that does not appear on the invoice.

07

The tier question, which can cap the return on any spend

  • Cambridge separate sciences are tiered Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C
  • Check the tier before paying for Extended-level content the student will not sit
  • The decision is open in Year 10 and close to closed by the second term of Year 11
  • Ask for a timed Extended paper and decide from the script, not from classwork
  • Pearson International GCSE sciences are untiered on a 9-1 scale

Before committing money to Cambridge separate sciences, establish the tier, because it may already have decided what grade is reachable. The separate sciences are tiered Core and Extended, and Core is capped at grade C. A student performing at the very top of Core cannot be awarded a B, and if a sixth-form science entry requirement is a B or a grade 6, no amount of tutoring changes the outcome.

That makes the tier the first thing to check on a cost page, because it determines whether the spend has a ceiling. A family paying for twelve hours of Extended-level chemistry support for a student entered for Core is paying for material that will not appear on their papers, which happens more often than it should because nobody checks.

The decision is genuinely open in the first term of Year 10 and close to closed by the second term of Year 11, since Extended content never taught would have to be learned alongside revising everything else. If a move is being considered, the cheapest useful step is asking the school for a timed Extended paper and having it marked properly, then deciding from the script rather than from classwork, which flatters a student working at a comfortable level.

Pearson International GCSE sciences are untiered and graded 9-1, which removes this complication entirely. That is worth knowing if a family is choosing between schools, though it is rarely the deciding factor and should not be presented as one.

08

Permits, honesty and getting a written quote

  • Ask whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition permit and when it expires
  • No official fine schedule for unpermitted tutoring is published
  • Ask for the intervention, band and total hours in writing before paying
  • Tutors give feedback on the student's own work and never produce assessed work
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or UAE premises

Start with the check that costs nothing, and bear in mind that three sciences often means more than one tutor, so it may be a check you run three times. The instrument is Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit; it runs two years and is granted free of charge, so it adds nothing to a Bluewaters Island quote and skipping it saves a tutor nothing either. MoHRE's service page states a two-working-day completion time, with the application going through its app, website or e-services. The eligibility list is deliberately wide - teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18 - which covers essentially every person likely to be teaching your child chemistry on a Tuesday evening. u.ae states that tutoring without the permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published anywhere, so treat any specific figure quoted to you as invention.

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which inspects annually and publishes ratings from Outstanding to Very Weak. IB Gram is not KHDA approved, Cambridge accredited or Pearson approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, and has no UAE office. We publish no aggregate rating because we have none we could evidence, while competitors in our research publish conflicting review counts on a single page.

On academic honesty, the boundary applies to any school-set investigation or project. A tutor teaches the skills, explains what the criteria reward, questions the approach, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor never writes, rewrites or completes assessed work or generates data. We also do not reproduce or distribute board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material.

What to ask for before paying is a written answer naming which intervention each of the three sciences needs, which band it requires, and roughly how many hours in total. That is comparable between providers, and it is the document to hold us to as well. An hourly rate multiplied by three subjects is not a quote; it is an assumption dressed as one.

Where we tutor

What the bridge adds when there are three subjects

Six communities around the island, noted for their cost effect. With three sciences in play, a travel premium applies three times over if a family arranges three in-home tutors.

Bluewaters Island

One road bridge, no school and no laboratory. Three in-home tutors means three evening journeys priced into three sets of hours, which is where a science bill quietly becomes the largest line in a household's education budget.

Dubai Marina

Immediately across the bridge and dense, with tuition centres running group science classes. The one genuine route to a lower hourly cost across three subjects, with limits on what group teaching can achieve.

JBR

Adjoining the pedestrian link, with some group provision. Shortest journey for a mainland tutor and still slow between five and seven, which is the only window a Year 11 student is free.

JLT

Across Sheikh Zayed Road with good transport links and more tuition centre provision. A realistic weekend destination for group science, and irrelevant to the cost of online sessions.

Al Sufouh

Campus territory including Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School, and where science teaching supply in this part of Dubai originates. A teacher finishing at four reaches the island around five at best.

Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The main campus ring plus the larger tuition centre operators. Twenty to thirty-five minutes from the island when school finishes, before parking in a residential tower.

The Greens and Emirates Hills

Regent International School and the inland IB and British campuses. Students here have the longest commute, which compresses the evening and makes three weekday sessions genuinely impossible rather than merely expensive.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask for component marks in all three sciences

Not the grades. Component marks are what distinguish a shared-skills problem from a single weak subject from genuine weakness in all three, and those three diagnoses differ in cost by a factor of ten. Schools provide them on request and are usually glad to be asked.

  2. 02

Get the award route and syllabus codes

Combined Science, Coordinated Sciences 0654, or separate 0610, 0620 and 0625, plus the tier where one applies. One email to the exams officer. The answer determines whether one tutor can cover the ground and whether a tier ceiling has already capped the return on any spend.

  3. 03

    Buy the shared-skills block first

Four to six hours on command terms, graph and table work, variable control and evaluation phrasing. Bought once and paying in all three papers, at AED 600 to AED 1,800 in the qualified band. Almost no student is strong in all four, which is why this is bought regardless of the diagnosis.

  4. 04

Then one subject block, with review

Six to twelve hours in whichever science the component marks named, with a specialist in that discipline. Then a written review before deciding whether a second block is needed, which it frequently is not once the shared skills are in place.

  5. 05

    Free trial lesson, then decide

A real teaching hour on this week's sticking point, followed by a short written note on what the tutor found. No card held, nothing renews. If the match is wrong you say so and we rematch once at no charge rather than asking you to compare profiles first.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We quote one subject when one subject is the answer

Three concurrent weekly tutors is AED 5,400 to AED 10,800 a term at the qualified band. Component marks usually name a single priority, and proposing one block instead of three costs us two thirds of the booking, which is why the diagnosis comes before the quote.

The shared-skills block offered first

Command terms, graph work, variable control and evaluation phrasing pay in all three sciences because the same mark schemes test them in every paper. Four to six hours bought once instead of three times is the best-value purchase in IGCSE science and almost nobody sells it.

Award route established before quoting

A Coordinated Sciences 0654 candidate almost never needs three tutors, because every paper spans all three disciplines and one targeted block lifts the whole award. Being quoted for three without that check is a sign the diagnosis was never done.

We send you to the budget band for drill

Mole and unit work is repetitive by design and well supervised from AED 45 an hour. Saying so costs us revenue on those sessions, and it is the reason to believe us when we do argue for a specialist in the one discipline that needs it.

The premium band ruled out at this level

At IGCSE there is very little in the sciences a qualified subject teacher cannot teach as well as an examiner, so spending at AED 500-650 an hour is the clearest overspend in this part of the market. We will not propose it and will say why if asked.

Group provision acknowledged honestly

A well-run group class is the sensible way to buy broad content revision, at a fraction of one-to-one cost. It cannot do individual diagnosis or drill, and a mixed-route group teaches to neither depth. Add two bridge crossings per class to the real cost.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bluewaters Island: your questions answered

Do we really need three tutors for three sciences?+

Usually not, and the alternative costs about a third as much. Three weekly one-hour sessions across a twelve-week Dubai term is thirty-six hours, which at the market band of roughly AED 150-300 an hour is AED 5,400 to AED 10,800. Ask the school for component marks across all three subjects first. Similar losses everywhere mean a shared-skills problem, which is one block of four to six hours paying in three papers. One subject clearly worse means a single block there, then a reassessment before committing further.

What is the cheapest intervention that helps all three sciences?+

Command terms, graph and table skills, variable control and evaluation phrasing, bought as one block of four to six hours. All four are tested in biology, chemistry and physics by the same mark schemes using the same language, so a student weak in them is losing marks in every paper simultaneously. At the qualified band that is AED 600 to AED 1,800, against AED 5,400 or more for three concurrent weekly tutors. Almost nobody offers it, because it does not look like a subject on an enquiry form.

Does the award route change how much tutoring we need?+

Substantially. A Coordinated Sciences 0654 candidate sits papers that each span biology, chemistry and physics, so a single weak discipline drags every paper and one targeted block with a specialist in that discipline lifts the whole double award. Separate sciences mean three full syllabuses and three times the revision, which is genuinely more expensive, though the shared-skills argument applies with more force because the block pays in three awards rather than two. Establish the route with the exams officer before anybody quotes.

How do we find out which science award our child is taking?+

Email the exams officer and ask for the board, the syllabus code per science, the tier where one applies and the series, in writing. Cambridge Combined Science is a single award at reduced depth, Coordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award at intermediate depth, and Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 are three full awards. Pearson offers Science Double Award alongside separate 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The answer changes the cost logic and nobody volunteers it unless asked directly.

If we have AED 3,000 for the term, how should we spend it?+

Shared-skills block first, at AED 600 to AED 1,800 for four to six hours on command terms, graph work, variable control and evaluation phrasing, because the return appears in all three papers. Then a single subject block of six to twelve hours in whichever science the component marks identify, with a specialist in that discipline. If the weak subject is chemistry, mole drill could come even cheaper at the budget band from AED 45 an hour. Deliberately exclude broad revision across three syllabuses, which buys very little.

Is the alternative-to-practical paper worth paying to prepare for?+

Yes, and it is one of the better values in the qualification, because the question types repeat across series and the mark scheme rewards specific phrasing. Four to six hours on past papers of that component is a real intervention, and it overlaps almost entirely with the shared-skills work, so one purchase often covers both. The Cambridge practical test is different: it needs lab rehearsal the school must provide, and paid preparation is limited to drilling the recording and processing that happens alongside the apparatus work.

Are group science classes in the Marina a sensible saving?+

For broad content revision, genuinely yes, and a well-run group class is the sensible way to buy that at a fraction of one-to-one cost. The limits are three: group teaching moves at the average pace, so drill-type work such as mole calculations fails the students who most need the repetition; individual diagnosis of command-term losses does not happen; and a mixed group of Coordinated and separate-science candidates teaches to neither depth. Add two bridge crossings in evening traffic per class when comparing the true cost.

Could the Core tier cap what our spending can achieve?+

Yes, and it is the first thing to check. Cambridge separate sciences are tiered Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C, so a student at the very top of Core cannot be awarded a B. If a sixth-form science requirement is a B or a grade 6, no amount of tutoring changes the outcome. Worse, families sometimes pay for Extended-level content a Core candidate will never sit. Ask for the tier in writing, and if a move is being weighed, ask for a timed Extended paper and decide from the script.

Which science usually gives the quickest return on a short block?+

Physics, on explanation structure, and chemistry, on mole work. Physics explain questions award marks for naming the quantity that changed, the relationship, the direction and the consequence, and students who describe outcomes instead score little however correct they are. Chemistry mole reasoning underpins stoichiometry, electrolysis calculations and most quantitative questions, so a slow student loses marks across the whole paper. Biology is slower because the difficulty is content volume, and it is better served by steady work than by a short block.

Should we ever pay AED 500 or more an hour for IGCSE science?+

We would not propose it. At this level there is very little in biology, chemistry or physics that a qualified subject teacher at AED 150-300 an hour cannot teach as well as an examiner, because the mark schemes are less specialised than at Diploma or A Level. The premium band of AED 500-650, with BartyED publishing AED 650, is the clearest overspend available in this part of the market. If a provider proposes it for IGCSE science, ask specifically what the premium is buying.

Why is it more expensive to have three in-home tutors on Bluewaters?+

Because the travel premium applies three times. Dubai in-home one-to-one runs roughly AED 180-350 an hour against AED 150-300 online for the same tier, and that gap is the journey the tutor cannot teach in. From the Al Barsha campus ring it means Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina approach, one bridge and visitor parking, in the two hours a Year 11 student is free. Three tutors making that journey weekly is three premiums on a week that has room for perhaps one weekday session anyway.

What should a written science quote actually contain?+

Three things per subject: which intervention it needs, which band that requires, and roughly how many hours, plus a total. That is comparable between providers. An hourly rate multiplied by three subjects is not a quote, because it assumes the diagnosis rather than stating it, and the difference between a four-hour shared-skills block and thirty-six hours of weekly sessions is the entire value of the decision. Ask also whether the provider would ever recommend fewer subjects, and treat the answer as informative.

Do you send science tutors to our apartment on Bluewaters?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. Across three subjects the online format also means graph and table work happens on a shared whiteboard that is saved, so revision later starts from the student's own corrected plots. Independent home tutors do work across the Marina and JBR at roughly AED 180-350 an hour, and for a younger child who needs physical presence they can genuinely be the better choice.

Which exam sittings will a Dubai science candidate have?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series for UAE candidates, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and the November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, warning it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise, so ask which zone applies.

Will a tutor help with school-set science investigations?+

A tutor teaches the skills the task assesses, explains what the criteria reward, questions the approach before weeks go into something unworkable, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor never writes, rewrites or completes any part of it, and never generates data, because the line is authorship and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student. We also do not reproduce or distribute board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material held by the boards.

Diagnose across three subjects, then buy once

The science bill triples by default rather than by decision. Ask the school for component marks in all three subjects, get the award route and syllabus codes from the exams officer, and check the tier before committing anything. Then buy the shared-skills block first, because command terms, graph work and evaluation phrasing pay in every paper your child sits. Add one subject block where the marks point, review it in writing, and only then consider whether a second is needed. Most families find it is not.
