IB Maths Tutor in Bluewaters Island

An IB maths tutor in Bluewaters Island is not one purchase. It is four, and they carry very different prices: the route decision, content drill, exploration supervision and Paper 3 technique. Families who buy them as one undifferentiated hourly rate overpay for most of it. IB Gram teaches Bluewaters students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Each piece of maths work quoted against the band it genuinely needs
  • The route decision handled before any hours are sold
  • Market AED rates published with their source and the month read

IB & IGCSE in Bluewaters Island

Four jobs, four prices, usually sold as one

Nearly every maths tutoring enquiry we receive from a community like Bluewaters Island asks for a weekly hour at whatever the rate is. That is a reasonable thing to ask for and it is the wrong unit, because IB mathematics support is four distinguishable jobs and they are not worth the same amount per hour.

The first job is the route decision: whether the student belongs in Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. It takes one or two sessions, it has to happen before anything else, and getting it wrong cannot be fixed by any amount of tutoring afterwards. The second is content drill: quadratics, logarithm rules, differentiation mechanics, calculator fluency. Repetitive, essential, and the cheapest work in the subject.

The third is exploration supervision, which is a fifth of the grade assessed against five published criteria. The fourth is paper technique, including the Higher Level third paper, which examines starting an unfamiliar extended problem and is worth roughly another fifth. The third and fourth genuinely need mark-scheme and criterion knowledge. The second does not, and the first is closer to advice than to teaching.

Published Dubai rates run from AED 45 an hour to AED 650, and nothing in this market explains which job needs which band. So a Bluewaters family pays a premium specialist to supervise logarithm practice, or hands exploration supervision to a university student because the package looked economical. The second is the expensive error, because it costs a term rather than a fee.

This page prices the four jobs separately, says where group teaching genuinely saves money and where it does not, and names the costs nobody budgets for. Every AED figure was read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 Dubai rate table, and each is attributed. They describe the market, not our price list.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run in India only, and every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For mathematics the online format also removes a cost that nobody itemises: with one road bridge onto the island, an in-home arrangement prices the evening journey into every hour, and the published travel premium of roughly AED 50-150 an hour is exactly that.

A last word on what this page is for. It is not an argument that maths tutoring is overpriced in Dubai, and several of the rates quoted below are defensible for the work they describe. The failure is that the market sells one undifferentiated hour, so a family cannot tell which of the four jobs they are buying or whether the rate matches it. Setting the four out separately lets you judge any quotation in this market, ours included, which is a more durable thing to hand somebody than a discount.

At a glance

  • Four separate jobs: route decision, content drill, exploration supervision, paper technique
  • The exploration is roughly twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on five published criteria
  • Higher Level has a third paper worth roughly another fifth in both AA and AI
  • Published Dubai rates span AED 45 to AED 650 an hour, a fourteen-fold spread
  • In-home runs AED 180-500 against AED 150-300 online for the same tier
  • IB Gram teaches UAE students online one-to-one; UAE home visits are not offered
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter for maths in this cluster, and the cost profile of each differs sharply. Knowing which one you are buying for prevents the most common overspend in the subject.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Every Diploma student takes one of four group five courses: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. Higher Level has three papers, Standard Level two. All four submit an exploration, an individual written report worth roughly twenty per cent and assessed on five published criteria.

This is the only stage where the specialist band earns a clear premium, and only for the exploration and for paper technique. Content catch-up at Diploma level sits comfortably in the qualified band, and families who pay specialist rates for it across two years spend several thousand dirhams on supervision they could have bought cheaper.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

Assessed against four criteria scored one to eight: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the criterion that prepares a student for the Diploma exploration, and communicating is where most marks are actually lost.

MYP maths support belongs in the qualified band of roughly AED 150-300 an hour. The work is criterion literacy and redrafting, which needs rigour rather than examination expertise. Paying specialist rates here is the standard overspend at this stage, and the sums involved across three or four years are not trivial.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

Embedded in transdisciplinary units with continuous assessment and no external examination. What pays off later is narrow: number fact fluency, confidence with fractions and proportion, and the willingness to write a working step rather than answering mentally. All three carry directly into MYP criteria and then into Diploma papers.

The cheapest band in the market is genuinely adequate here, and this is also the one stage where an in-home tutor's physical presence is worth the travel premium. A Bluewaters family with a Year 4 child should not be paying Diploma specialist rates, and we will say so rather than taking the booking.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme mathematics

Where a student takes a Diploma mathematics course inside the Career-related Programme framework, the course content, papers and exploration are identical to a full Diploma student's, and so is the tutoring. UAE provision for the programme itself is limited.

The same four-job pricing logic applies without modification. Families considering this route from Bluewaters are usually choosing a specific campus rather than a curriculum, and the maths course inside it should be costed exactly as it would be for any Diploma candidate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The maths work Bluewaters families actually ask for, with the band each piece genuinely needs. This is the column no provider in this market publishes, and it is where the money is decided.

Route decision: AA or AI, HL or SL

Before DP1

One or two sessions attempting real questions from both courses, checked against the published prerequisites of three or four target degrees. Closer to advice than teaching, and the highest-value hours in the subject because no later spending corrects a wrong route.

Algebraic drill and prior knowledge

All routes

Indices, logarithms, rearrangement, surds, factorising. Repetitive by design and genuinely well served at the budget band. A student who is slow here loses marks throughout, and the fix is practice with supervision rather than expertise.

Differentiation and integration mechanics

AA HL and SL

Chain, product and quotient rules, substitution, integration by parts. The mechanics drill cheaply; the application to unfamiliar structures does not. Marks go missing in notation, such as not stating what is being differentiated with respect to.

Statistics and calculator fluency

AI HL and SL, AA SL

Distributions, hypothesis testing, regression, and running each reliably on the device. Device fluency can be built by any competent tutor. Interpreting a result in context the way the upper band requires starts to need mark-scheme familiarity.

Proof and complex numbers

AA HL

Induction, contradiction, counterexample, and the modulus-argument and exponential forms. Induction is formulaic and drills well; Argand diagram presentation is where marks disappear, usually from unlabelled axes and unmarked moduli.

Matrices and graph theory

AI HL

Transformations, adjacency, shortest path and tree algorithms. A genuinely separate topic set from AA Higher Level, which is why a tutor who covers all four routes interchangeably is a problem rather than a convenience.

The mathematical exploration

All routes

Roughly twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Criterion-level work and the clearest case in the subject for paying the specialist band.

Paper 3 technique

AA HL and AI HL

Two extended problems worth roughly a fifth of the Higher Level grade, examining the ability to start an unfamiliar structure. The single narrowest and most genuinely specialist piece of work in IB mathematics.

Timed paper practice and marking

All routes

Questions sat under timing and marked against the published mark scheme point by point, with a categorised error log. Needs somebody who marks accurately rather than somebody expensive, so the qualified band is usually right.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy maths support, priced honestly. The mixed-band option is the one we recommend most often and the one nobody advertises.

Mixed-band across the two years

Specialist hours reserved for the exploration and Paper 3 technique; qualified or budget hours for content drill and timed paper marking. Same total hours as a single-rate arrangement, materially lower cost, and better matched to what each piece of work needs. Both tutors work to one written plan so nothing is duplicated.

  • Diagnosis first, then a band chosen per piece of work
  • Specialist time protected for criteria and third-paper technique
  • Drill and marking bought at the band that actually fits
  • One written plan shared between both tutors

Single specialist, exploration and Paper 3 only

A short block of six to twelve sessions aimed exclusively at the two components that carry roughly forty per cent of a Higher Level grade between them. No weekly content support at all. For a capable student who is coping with the course and underperforming on those two components, this is the whole purchase and it has a defined end.

  • Exploration criteria taught and the research question interrogated early
  • Paper 3 opening technique drilled as its own skill
  • Defined session count with a written finish date
  • Nothing renews when the block completes

Weekly qualified support, no specialist

One session a week with a competent subject teacher following the school's scheme of work, with no specialist hours at all. Appropriate for a Standard Level student who needs the course taught properly rather than the assessment decoded, and substantially cheaper than the arrangement most families default to.

  • Mapped to the school's teaching order week by week
  • Prior-knowledge gaps closed in dependency order
  • Every worked solution saved on a shared whiteboard
  • Upgraded to specialist hours only if the exploration needs it

01

The four jobs, priced separately

Start from the cheapest. Content drill is the largest block of hours most families buy and the least demanding of expertise: indices, logarithms, rearrangement, differentiation mechanics, calculator fluency. What it needs is somebody patient who will supervise repetition and check working. Budget and university-student tutors advertise from AED 45 an hour in Dubai, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52, and for this job that band is genuinely adequate.

Next, course teaching. A student who needs the syllabus taught properly rather than practised needs a competent subject teacher, which is the qualified band of roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. This is the working band for most Standard Level students across most of the two years, and the band families move away from too readily.

Then the two jobs that justify a premium. Exploration supervision is criterion work: five published criteria, with use of mathematics capped by topic choice and personal engagement routinely misread as choosing an enjoyable subject. Paper 3 technique at Higher Level is narrower still, examining the ability to start an unfamiliar extended problem. Both need somebody who has marked against the published descriptors, which is the specialist band of AED 200-450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270.

The route decision sits outside the pricing logic entirely, because it is one or two sessions and because its value is not proportional to its cost. Two years of tutoring cannot correct a student placed in a course their target degree does not accept, which makes those two hours the highest-leverage spend available in the subject.

The exploration: a fifth of the grade, and where supervision pays

The exploration is an individual written report worth roughly twenty per cent of the mathematics grade in all four routes, assessed on five published criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. For a family counting cost, it is the single most efficient target in the subject, because the marks are available in advance and under the student's control rather than dependent on an exam-hall performance.

Use of mathematics is the heaviest criterion and it is capped by topic choice. A topic whose mathematics sits comfortably below the student's course level cannot reach the top band however well it is written, because the criterion rewards mathematics commensurate with the course. This is why a topic chosen in week two of DP1, before the student has met the harder content, so frequently limits the achievable mark. Six to ten specialist hours spread across DP1, with most of them early, is the efficient allocation.

Personal engagement is the criterion students misread most, and the misreading is expensive. It does not mean choosing something enjoyable. It means visible evidence of the student's own thinking and decisions in the work: a choice made and justified, an approach abandoned and replaced with the reason stated, an extension attempted. Reflection means saying what the result means and what the limitations are, not restating the conclusion.

Our role is bounded and we state it plainly. We teach what each criterion asks for, interrogate whether a proposed topic can satisfy use of mathematics at the student's level, and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. We do not write, rewrite or complete any part of an exploration. One operator in our competitor research sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750, and the malpractice finding from buying one falls on the student rather than the seller.

Group classes: where the saving is real and where it is not

Small-group teaching is the main route to a genuinely lower hourly cost, and tuition centres operate across the Marina, JBR and JLT. The honest position is that it works well for some maths work and badly for the parts that matter most at Diploma level, and the distinction is worth understanding before buying a term of it.

Group teaching works for content delivery and for practice. A group of four Standard Level students working through differentiation with a teacher at the board is a reasonable use of everybody's time, and the per-student cost falls substantially. It also provides something one-to-one cannot: seeing how other students approach a problem, and the mild competitive pressure of not being the slowest in the room.

It works poorly for the exploration, because each student's topic, research question and criterion weaknesses are different, and a group session necessarily teaches to the average. It also works poorly for Paper 3 technique, where the whole exercise is watching an individual student's first two minutes on an unfamiliar problem and intervening in their specific hesitation. And it works poorly when the group spans routes, because AA and AI diverge enough that a mixed group gets two half-lessons.

The cost logic therefore favours a mixed approach rather than a wholesale choice: group provision for content and practice if it is convenient and well run, and one-to-one specialist hours reserved for the exploration and the third paper. Add the travel when comparing, because a group class in Al Barsha costs the fee plus two bridge crossings in evening traffic.

04

The cheapest decision in the subject is free

  • Four separate courses: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL, AI SL, with different content and papers
  • Read each target programme's own published prerequisite in the application year
  • AI HL is not a substitute for AA SL where AA is specified
  • Test the student on real questions from both courses rather than describing them
  • Confirm which of the four routes your child's campus actually runs

Before any hours are bought, the route decision should be made properly, and the information it needs costs nothing. There are four group five courses: Analysis and Approaches at Higher and Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard. AA is the algebraic route, built on proof, functions, calculus and, at Higher Level, complex numbers and vectors. AI is the data route, built on statistics, modelling and, at Higher Level, matrices and graph theory.

The method is to list three or four target degrees, read the published entry requirement on each university's own admissions page in the year of application, and work backwards. Engineering, physics, mathematics and most quantitative economics programmes generally expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level and sometimes with a minimum grade. AI is accepted for a narrower set of courses. Requirements are revised, so read them rather than trusting a summary, including this one.

Then test the student with real questions from both courses rather than describing the courses to them. Somebody who handles proof by induction and struggles to interpret a regression belongs in AA. Somebody for whom the reverse is true belongs in AI, whatever their stated ambition. That session is one or two hours and it is the best money in this subject, because a wrong route cannot be corrected later at any price.

One practical constraint to check at the same time: not every Dubai campus offers all four routes in a given year, depending on cohort size and staffing. A student intending AA Higher Level at a school that runs only AA Standard and AI Standard is making a school decision rather than a subject one, and that conversation belongs in Year 11.

05

Paper 3, and the one genuine case for the premium band

  • Paper 3 is roughly a fifth of the Higher Level grade in both AA and AI
  • It examines starting an unfamiliar extended problem, which no other paper does
  • The teaching is diagnostic, so it does not work in a group
  • Four to eight specialist hours covers it for most students
  • Standard Level students have no third paper and should not be sold this work

Higher Level students in both routes sit a third paper worth roughly a fifth of the grade, and it examines something the rest of the course does not require: sustained independent work on a long unfamiliar problem where the first step is not signposted. It is the narrowest piece of work in IB mathematics and the one where expensive expertise most clearly earns its rate.

The reason is that the teaching is diagnostic rather than instructional. A student who has only met textbook-shaped questions has learned recognition rather than analysis, so when recognition fails they read the problem twice and stop. What changes that is somebody watching the first two minutes, identifying the specific point at which the student gives up, and intervening there. That is not content delivery and it cannot be done in a group or by a tutor who has not seen many students fail at it.

The practical programme is repetitive and short: read an unfamiliar problem, identify what is given, name the kind of object being asked for, and write a correct relevant first line even when the route to the answer is not visible. Four to eight specialist hours covers it for most students, which at AED 200-450 is AED 800 to AED 3,600. The premium band at AED 500-650, with BartyED publishing AED 650, makes sense for a candidate already at a 6 where the remaining gap is specialised.

For everybody else the premium band is a rate without a matching problem. A Standard Level student has no third paper. A Higher Level student who cannot yet differentiate reliably needs the qualified band and some drill, not an examiner. Spending at the top of the market before the foundations are in place is the most common way a family converts a large budget into a small improvement.

06

The maths costs nobody budgets for

  • A graphical calculator is a capital cost; the fluency matters more than the device
  • The exploration costs the student twenty to forty of their own hours, not just tutoring hours
  • Mathematics is cumulative, so delay multiplies the hours a fix requires
  • Schools specify permitted calculator models, so confirm before buying
  • Plan the student's own time alongside any tutoring purchase

Three costs sit outside the tutoring conversation and routinely surprise families, and all three are worth planning rather than absorbing.

The first is the graphical calculator. It is a capital purchase, it is assumed throughout Applications and Interpretation and on the calculator paper in Analysis and Approaches, and schools specify permitted models. The cost that actually matters is not the device but the fluency: a student who hunts through menus mid-paper loses marks that have nothing to do with mathematics. We check device fluency explicitly in early sessions because it is invisible in classwork until a paper exposes it.

The second is time rather than money, and it is the exploration. Six to ten hours of tutoring is the visible cost; the student's own twenty to forty hours of writing, data handling and redrafting is the real one, and it lands in DP1 alongside everything else. Families who plan the tutoring and not the student's hours find the work compressed into a fortnight, which caps the mark regardless of how good the supervision was.

The third is the cost of a late start. Mathematics is cumulative, so a gap left in DP1 compounds rather than sitting still. Closing a differentiation gap in the autumn of DP1 takes two or three hours; closing the same gap in the spring of DP2, after it has undermined integration, Paper 2 and half the exploration, takes considerably more. The same intervention costs several times as much simply for having been delayed.

07

Honesty, regulators and the claims to discount

  • Purchased assessed work is malpractice and the finding falls on the student
  • A tutor teaches criteria and reviews the student's own drafts, never writing any part
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free, valid two years, with no published fine schedule
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or UAE premises
  • Examiner status must be evidenced and never implies access to marking or boundaries

On a page about cost, the most expensive thing available is a purchase that puts a student's Diploma at risk. One operator in our competitor research sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750. Submitting purchased work is academic malpractice under IB rules, the finding goes against the student rather than the seller, and the consequences reach the Diploma itself rather than one subject grade.

The legitimate version is what the specialist band is genuinely worth paying for. A tutor teaches the mathematics the exploration rests on, explains each criterion and what the descriptors require, interrogates whether a topic can satisfy use of mathematics at the student's level, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor never writes, rewrites or completes any part of the work. We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material.

On regulators: Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Individual tutors need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with no published fine schedule for working without one. IB Gram is not IB authorised, KHDA approved or ADEK approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, and has no UAE office.

Two further claims to discount when comparing prices. Examiner status should be evidenced on request and never implies access to marking, grade boundaries or unreleased paper content. And any statistic without a sample size, a date and a method is unverifiable: we publish no aggregate rating because we have none we could evidence, while competitors in our research publish conflicting review counts on a single page.

08

Getting a written answer before you commit

  • Send the route, the level, the school and a recent marked paper
  • Ask for a written answer naming the job, the band and the hours before paying
  • An hourly rate alone is not comparable between providers
  • Mixed-band arrangements proposed where the work spans bands
  • No UAE home visits; home tutoring is an India-only service for us

Send the route and level if they are settled, the school, and a recent marked paper. If the route is not settled, say so, because that comes first and it is one or two sessions rather than a term. A marked script is worth more than a report card, because it shows whether the losses are notation, prior knowledge, technique or the exploration, and those four sit in different bands.

What you should get back, before paying anything, is a written answer naming which of the four jobs your child needs, which band each needs, and roughly how many hours. That is the document to compare between providers. An hourly rate on its own is not comparable, because it does not say what the hours will do.

Then take the free trial lesson, which is a real teaching hour on the current sticking point rather than a consultation, with a short written note afterwards. No card is held, nothing renews, and if the match is wrong we rematch once at no charge. Where the work spans bands, we will propose two tutors working to one plan rather than charging specialist rates throughout.

Bluewaters sessions usually land at 5:30pm Gulf Standard Time or later on weekdays, with weekend mornings better for exploration work and full timed papers. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots are a normal request and the slot is held. What we will not do, on the island or anywhere in the UAE, is send a tutor to your address; that service runs in India only.

Where we tutor

What the island's geography adds to the bill

Six neighbouring communities, noted for their effect on the cost of maths support rather than on the mathematics. On Bluewaters the geography is a price input, which is unusual enough to be worth setting out.

Bluewaters Island

One road bridge, no school, and a small resident population. Any in-home arrangement prices the evening journey into the hour, which is why the island sees the travel premium more sharply than mainland communities do.

Dubai Marina

Immediately across the bridge and extremely dense. Tuition centres and group classes operate here, which is the one route to a genuinely lower hourly cost, with the trade-offs set out further down this page.

JBR

Adjoining the pedestrian link. Some group provision, and the shortest possible journey for a mainland tutor, which still runs into The Walk traffic in the only hours a Diploma student is free.

JLT

Across Sheikh Zayed Road with good metro and tram access and more tuition centres. A realistic destination for a weekend group class, and irrelevant to the cost of an online session.

Al Sufouh

Campus territory and where mathematics teaching supply in this part of Dubai actually originates. A teacher finishing at four reaches a Bluewaters address around five at best, which is what the premium pays for.

Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The main campus ring plus the larger tuition centre operators. Twenty to thirty-five minutes from the island at the end of the school day, before parking.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Established IB campuses twenty-five to forty minutes inland, where a number of Bluewaters Diploma students study. Too far for a reliable evening in-home arrangement at any price.

Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Settle the route before buying hours

One or two sessions attempting real questions from both group five courses, checked against the published prerequisites of three or four target degrees. It costs little and no later spending corrects a student placed in a course their target programme does not accept.

  2. 02

Send a marked paper, not a grade

A marked script shows whether the losses are notation, prior knowledge, paper technique or the exploration. Those four sit in different price bands, so the script is what makes a quotation meaningful rather than a guess dressed as a plan.

  3. 03

Get the job, band and hours in writing

Before paying anything, ask for a written answer naming which of the four jobs your child needs, which band each requires and roughly how many hours. That document is comparable between providers in a way an hourly rate is not.

  4. 04

    Free trial lesson, then decide

A real teaching hour on this week's sticking point, followed by a short written note on what the tutor found. No card held, nothing renews. If the match is wrong you say so and we rematch once at no charge rather than asking you to choose from profiles.

  5. 05

Review the band as the work changes

A student who finishes exploration supervision and moves to timed paper volume should move down a band, not stay at specialist rates. We re-check every four to six weeks and change the arrangement rather than leaving the invoice where it was.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Four jobs priced separately

Route decision, content drill, exploration supervision and Paper 3 technique are not worth the same per hour. We quote each against the band it needs, which usually lowers the total and always makes the quotation comparable to anybody else's.

We say when the budget band is enough

Algebraic drill, logarithm practice and calculator fluency are well served from AED 45 an hour. Saying so costs us revenue on those sessions, which is the only reason to believe the rest of this page. Three of the six main competitor pages in our research publish no price at all.

Exploration hours placed early

Use of mathematics is capped by topic choice, so most of the specialist hours belong in early DP1 rather than near the deadline. Supervision bought late is supervision of a topic that has already limited the achievable mark, which is the commonest waste in the subject.

Group provision acknowledged honestly

Small-group teaching genuinely lowers the cost of content delivery and practice, and we will say so. It does not work for exploration supervision or Paper 3 technique, where the whole exercise is intervening in one student's specific hesitation.

Route advice tied to published prerequisites

We work from the entry requirement on each target university's own admissions page in the application year, not from a general impression of which course is harder. AI Higher Level is not a substitute for AA Standard Level where AA is specified.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bluewaters Island: your questions answered

Why price IB maths tutoring by the job rather than by the hour?+

Because it is four jobs with genuinely different requirements. The route decision is one or two sessions of advice. Content drill needs patient supervision. Exploration supervision and Paper 3 technique need somebody who has marked against the published criteria. Published Dubai rates span AED 45 to AED 650 an hour, and nothing in this market explains which job needs which band, so families end up paying premium rates for logarithm practice or handing criterion work to a university student. The second error costs a term rather than a fee.

Can a cheap tutor handle Diploma maths drill properly?+

For drill, yes. Indices, logarithms, rearrangement, surds, differentiation mechanics and calculator fluency are repetitive by design and need somebody patient who will supervise practice and check working. Budget and university-student tutors in Dubai advertise from AED 45 an hour, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52, and for this work that band is genuinely adequate. What it cannot do is exploration criteria or third-paper technique, where mark-scheme familiarity changes the outcome and the cheaper hour wastes the term rather than saving money.

How many specialist hours does the exploration actually need?+

Six to ten for most students, and the timing matters more than the number. Use of mathematics is the heaviest of the five criteria and it is capped by topic choice, so the majority of those hours belong in early DP1 while the topic is still open. A topic chosen in week two, before the student has met the harder content, frequently limits the achievable mark however well the report is written. At the specialist band of AED 200-450, that is roughly AED 1,200 to AED 4,500 across DP1.

Are small-group maths classes in the Marina worth considering?+

For content delivery and practice, genuinely yes, and the per-student cost falls substantially. A group of four Standard Level students working through differentiation with a teacher at the board is a reasonable use of everybody's time, and peer approaches plus mild competitive pressure add something one-to-one does not. It works poorly for the exploration, where every topic and criterion weakness differs, and for Paper 3, where the work is intervening in one student's hesitation. Add two bridge crossings in evening traffic when comparing the cost.

What is Paper 3 and why does it justify a higher rate?+

It is two extended problems worth roughly a fifth of the Higher Level grade in both AA and AI, examining something no other paper does: starting a long unfamiliar problem where the first step is not signposted. The teaching is diagnostic rather than instructional, which means somebody watching the first two minutes, identifying exactly where the student gives up, and intervening there. That cannot be done in a group or by somebody who has not watched many students fail at it. Four to eight specialist hours covers it for most candidates.

Which group five course should a Bluewaters student aiming at engineering take?+

Almost certainly Analysis and Approaches, and often at Higher Level, but read the actual requirement rather than relying on that. List three or four target programmes, open each university's own admissions page in the year of application, and check what they specify, including any minimum grade. Engineering, physics, mathematics and most quantitative economics courses generally expect AA. AI Higher Level is not a substitute where AA is named, and that mismatch is the error we most often catch too late in this cluster.

Is Applications and Interpretation the cheaper course to support?+

Marginally, and not for the reason families assume. AI is not easier than AA; it replaces algebraic depth with statistics, modelling, matrices and graph theory, all demanding in their own way. Where it is slightly cheaper to support is calculator fluency, which any competent tutor can build, whereas AA Paper 1 is non-calculator and rewards hand algebra that often needs more drill. The exploration costs the same in both routes, and so does Paper 3 at Higher Level, which is where most of the specialist spend sits either way.

What hidden costs should we budget for beyond the tutoring?+

Three. A graphical calculator is a capital purchase and schools specify permitted models, though the fluency matters more than the device: a student hunting through menus mid-paper loses marks unrelated to mathematics. The exploration costs the student twenty to forty of their own hours on top of any supervision, and it lands in DP1 alongside everything else. And delay is a cost in itself, because mathematics is cumulative, so a differentiation gap costing two hours in autumn DP1 costs considerably more once it has undermined integration and half the exploration.

Does it work to use two tutors at two different rates?+

It is the arrangement we recommend most often and the one nobody advertises. A specialist at AED 200-450 handles the exploration and Paper 3 technique; a qualified or budget tutor handles content drill and timed paper marking. Same total hours, materially lower cost, and each piece of work matched to what it genuinely needs. The condition is that both tutors work to one written plan so nothing is duplicated and nothing falls between them, which is an administrative requirement rather than a difficult one.

When is the premium band at AED 650 an hour actually sensible?+

For a narrow case: a Higher Level candidate already performing at a 6 where the remaining gap is specialised, typically in Paper 3 or in a specific topic at the top of the course. BartyED publishes AED 650 in that band. It makes no sense for a Standard Level student, who has no third paper at all, and none for a Higher Level student who cannot yet differentiate reliably, who needs the qualified band and some drill. Spending at the top before the foundations are in place converts a large budget into a small improvement.

What does a full two years of maths support cost if bought well?+

Allocated by job rather than by week, a typical efficient plan is one or two hours on the route decision, six to twelve hours of drill at the lower band, six to ten specialist hours on the exploration placed early in DP1, four to eight specialist hours on Paper 3 if the student is at Higher Level, and ten to sixteen qualified hours of timed paper marking in the final two terms. That is under fifty hours across two years, against sixty to seventy for an unreviewed weekly arrangement, and it is usually cheaper and more effective.

Why is an in-home maths tutor more expensive on Bluewaters?+

Because the journey is priced into the hour. Dubai in-home one-to-one runs roughly AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 for the same tier online, rising to AED 500 at specialist levels, and that gap is travel time the tutor cannot teach in. The island has one road bridge, and a tutor coming from the Al Barsha campus ring at five faces Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina approach, the bridge and then visitor parking. It also locks the arrangement to hour blocks, since nobody makes that journey for thirty minutes.

Do you send a maths tutor to our apartment on the island?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. For mathematics the online format has a specific benefit beyond cost: the shared whiteboard saves every worked solution, so spring revision starts from the student's own corrected working rather than a half-remembered notebook page. Independent home tutors do work across the Marina and JBR, and for a Primary Years child who needs an adult physically present they can genuinely be the better choice.

An operator offered us a finished exploration for AED 3,750. What should we do?+

Decline, and treat it as the most expensive purchase on offer rather than a shortcut. One operator in our competitor research advertises exactly that. Submitting purchased work is academic malpractice under IB rules, the finding goes against the student rather than the seller, and the consequences reach the Diploma itself rather than a single subject grade. The legitimate alternative costs less: a specialist who teaches the five criteria, interrogates the topic early, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote, which is six to ten hours of work.

Does every Dubai school offer all four maths routes?+

No, and it constrains more choices than most families realise. Depending on cohort size and staffing, a campus may run only two or three of AA Higher, AA Standard, AI Higher and AI Standard in a given year. Since Bluewaters has no school on the island, families here are sometimes choosing between campuses partly on group five provision without being aware of it. Ask the school directly which routes will be available in your child's year, in writing, before Year 11 choices are submitted.

Price the job, not the hour

IB mathematics support is four purchases with four different prices, and the common error is buying them as one. Settle the route first, because no later spending corrects it. Buy drill at the band that drill needs. Reserve the specialist hours for the exploration, placed early in DP1 while the topic is still open, and for Paper 3 if your child is at Higher Level. Then ask any provider, including us, for a written answer naming the job, the band and the hours before paying anything.
