Grade 8 IB MYP Tutor in Dubai

A grade 8 IB MYP tutor in Dubai is almost always working against a setting decision. Year 3 is when Dubai schools split mathematics into standard and extended, when the sciences stop being one subject in substance, and when a child's position in a set starts to look like a fact about them rather than a snapshot. This page is about what Grade 8 actually assesses, where the marks go, and which decisions are hard to reverse. Lessons are one-to-one and live online.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The year a snapshot turns into a label

Grade 8 is where most Dubai MYP schools begin to sort. Mathematics splits into a standard and an extended route. The integrated sciences, which have been one subject on the timetable, start to behave like three in content and in the criterion B work they set. Individuals and societies withdraws the research scaffolding it provided in Year 2. And in a good number of schools, a set list is drawn up, reviewed at intervals, and in practice becomes the student's track for the next two years.

The academic content of Year 3 is a step rather than a leap. In mathematics it is indices and standard form, linear graphs and gradient, simultaneous equations, Pythagoras, and the first real work with probability and data handling. In the sciences it is particle theory applied properly, forces and energy quantitatively, cells and systems in more depth, and chemical change written as equations. In language and literature it is sustained analytical writing rather than paragraph-level analysis.

What makes Year 3 consequential is not the content but the sorting. A student placed in a standard mathematics set in Grade 8 will usually still be there in Grade 10, and will arrive at Diploma options having been told, implicitly, which mathematics route is realistic. That can be entirely correct. It can also be the result of one weak term, a missed topic from Year 2, or a criterion the student never understood the demands of. Those three look identical on a set list and need completely different responses.

So the honest brief for Grade 8 support is narrow and specific: find out whether the set is a fair reflection of capability or an artefact, and if it is an artefact, build the evidence that gets it reviewed. Schools review sets on performance against criteria, not on parental conviction, which means the work has to be the kind that produces criterion scores a head of department can look at.

The Dubai layer continues. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA requirements due for implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and requires that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects.

One further thing is worth saying to a parent reading a mid-table Year 3 report. The integrated science grade in particular hides more than it shows. A student can be genuinely strong in the biology strand, adequate in physics and lost in chemistry, and still land on a single middling number with four criterion scores behind it. That number tells you nothing about what to do next, and the diagnosis has to happen at strand level and at criterion level before any money is spent. The same applies to a mathematics grade produced partly in a set whose demands differ from the set next door.

On delivery, which matters here because the object is evidence a head of department will actually read. Every IB Gram lesson in the UAE is one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time, so marked criterion work accumulates in one place across a term instead of in a notebook that gets left at school. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE: in-home tutoring is an India-only service, and nothing on this page should be read as offering it in Dubai.

At a glance

  • Grade 8 is MYP Year 3, and the year most Dubai schools set mathematics
  • A Grade 8 set usually persists to Grade 10 and frames the Diploma options conversation
  • A weak term, a Year 2 gap and a genuine ceiling look identical on a set list
  • Sets are reviewed on criterion evidence, not on parental conviction
  • The sciences separate in substance in Year 3 even where they share a timetable slot
  • Individuals and societies withdraws the research scaffolding it gave in Year 2

Grade 8 sits in the middle of the MYP, two years past the primary transition and two years short of options. What each neighbouring stage expects is how you judge whether a Year 3 set is fair.

MYPAge 13 · Grade 8

Middle Years Programme, Year 3

Eight subject groups assessed against four lettered criteria per subject, each scored 0-8 and converted to a 1-7 subject grade. Year 3 introduces more quantitative demand across mathematics and the sciences, withdraws scaffolding in investigative work, and in most schools begins differentiating mathematics into standard and extended routes.

In Dubai, Year 3 is also where school populations are most mobile: families arrive and leave mid-year, and new students are placed into sets on the basis of a transfer report from a different system. A placement made on a CBSE or American transcript in September is a weak basis for a track that persists to Grade 10, and it is worth asking how and when it will be reviewed.

MYPAges 14-16 · Grades 9-10

Middle Years Programme, Years 4 and 5

The final two-year MYP cycle, with increasing independence in criterion B investigations, the Grade 10 Personal Project and its process journal and report, and in some schools an optional external eAssessment route. This is also where the Diploma or A Level decision is made.

The destination that makes Grade 8 matter. By Year 4 the mathematics routes have genuinely diverged in content, not only in pace, so a student moving up a set in Grade 10 has more to make up than one moving in Grade 8. If a set is going to be challenged, Year 3 is the cheap time to do it.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Internal assessment in every subject, external examinations in the May session for UAE schools, and grades from 1 to 7 plus up to three bonus points.

The Diploma's mathematics routes are Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, each at Higher or Standard Level. A student who spent Years 3 to 5 in a standard MYP mathematics set is rarely steered towards Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, which is the route most engineering and physics degrees expect. That is the real stake in a Grade 8 set decision.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is listed with what Year 3 adds and the criterion where Grade 8 students in Dubai most often lose marks. This is the diagnostic list, not a syllabus summary.

Mathematics (standard route)

MYP Year 3

Indices and standard form, linear graphs and gradient, Pythagoras, probability and data handling. Criterion A is usually secure; criterion B, investigating patterns, is where a standard-set student is most often capped, because the generalisation step is where the extended work begins.

Mathematics (extended route)

MYP Year 3

The same core plus simultaneous equations handled algebraically, more demanding manipulation, and investigations requiring a justified general rule. The step is in criterion B and C rather than in topic count, which is why topic coverage alone does not move a student between routes.

Biology strand

MYP Year 3 sciences

Cells, systems and transport in more depth, with quantitative handling of data from experiments. Criterion C, processing and evaluating, is the recurring loss: students describe results instead of evaluating the reliability of their own method.

Chemistry strand

MYP Year 3 sciences

Particle theory applied properly, chemical change expressed as word and symbol equations, and the beginnings of quantitative reasoning about reactions. A Year 3 student who cannot balance an equation confidently carries that into every later chemistry topic.

Physics strand

MYP Year 3 sciences

Forces, energy and motion handled with numbers rather than descriptions, plus graph work where gradient means something physical. The gap is usually unit handling and rearranging a formula, which traces back to Year 2 algebra rather than to physics.

Language and Literature

MYP Year 3, English

Sustained analytical writing across a whole essay rather than a single paragraph. Criterion B, organising, becomes a real constraint: a student with good insights and no structure scores below one with ordinary insights arranged well.

Individuals and Societies

MYP Year 3

Scaffolding is withdrawn: students are expected to form a research question, select sources and evaluate them. Criterion B and D carry most of the loss, and a student who always worked from a given question in Year 2 feels this immediately.

Language Acquisition

MYP phases

Still marked against phase descriptors rather than grade level. By Year 3 the phase a student occupies is usually settled, and it is the main constraint on which Diploma language routes will be open at Grade 10 options.

Design

MYP Year 3

A fuller design cycle with more independence in the inquiring and analysing stage. Three of the four criteria depend on documented process, so the journal habit built or missed in Year 2 determines most of the Year 3 mark.

Arabic, Islamic Education and UAE Social Studies

KHDA mandatory subjects

Required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and KHDA-specified languages of instruction. Support works from the school's own material, as additional content requires prior Ministry of Education permission.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All formats below are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE.

Set-review evidence building

The Grade 8 specific format. The work targets the criteria a head of department will actually look at in a review — usually criterion B and C in mathematics and sciences — and produces the kind of output that counts: completed investigations, justified general rules, evaluated experiments. A parent's conviction moves nothing; criterion scores do.

  • Targets the criteria the school's own review process uses
  • Produces finished work of the type the review looks at
  • Timed against the school's review calendar, which you should ask for
  • Honest about when the set is a fair reflection and not an artefact

Extended-route preparation

For a student in the standard route who should be in the extended one, or in the extended route and struggling. The content gap between the two is smaller than families think; the gap is in criterion B and C demands, specifically the move from applying a pattern to justifying a general rule.

  • Focus on generalisation and justification rather than extra topics
  • Algebraic method rather than numerical trial, which is the real divide
  • Investigation practice marked against the extended descriptors
  • Realistic about the gap where prior-year algebra is unsecured

Single science strand support

Grade 8 is where the sciences separate in substance, which means a student can be strong in two strands and weak in one while the report shows a single science grade. Support targets the strand rather than the subject, usually chemistry equations or physics formula rearrangement.

  • Targets one strand, not the integrated science grade
  • Chemistry: balancing and symbol equations as a secured skill
  • Physics: unit handling and rearranging formulae, which is algebra not physics
  • Biology: evaluating one's own method, which is the criterion C loss

Weekly one-to-one alongside class

The conventional arrangement where the set is fair and the aim is to do well within it. Works slightly ahead of the class so a lesson is a second encounter rather than a first, with written work set and marked between sessions so progress is visible in criterion terms.

  • A fixed weekly hour, same tutor, on Gulf Standard Time
  • Works a topic ahead of the class rather than reviewing behind it
  • Written work marked against the relevant criterion descriptor
  • Reviewed each term against criterion evidence rather than renewed

Grade 8 tutors work to the set the student is actually in and to the one they are trying to reach, because those are different briefs. Moving up a set requires evidence on specific criteria, not general improvement, and the evidence has to exist before the review.

01

Standard or extended mathematics: what actually separates them

Dubai parents consistently believe the difference between standard and extended MYP mathematics is topic coverage, and therefore that a tutor covering extra topics will move a child between them. That is not what separates the routes. The routes differ in what criterion B and criterion C demand, which is a different kind of work rather than more of the same.

Both routes cover indices and standard form, linear graphs and gradient, Pythagoras, and probability and data handling in Year 3. The extended route handles simultaneous equations algebraically rather than graphically, carries more demanding manipulation, and above all expects an investigation to end in a justified general rule rather than a described pattern. That last point is the actual boundary: a standard-route student says 'the numbers go up by three each time'; an extended-route student says 'the nth term is 3n minus 1, because each step adds one more group of three', and then shows it.

The practical consequence for a student in the wrong route is that covering more content will not move them. Producing an investigation with a justified generalisation will. That is why Grade 8 support aimed at a set review should spend its time on generalisation and algebraic method rather than on racing ahead through topics the student will meet anyway.

The second practical consequence is a diagnostic one. Where a student cannot reach a justified general rule because their algebra is unsecured — they cannot reliably manipulate an expression — the honest answer is that the Year 2 algebra has to be secured first, and a set review this term is unrealistic. Saying that is more useful than six weeks of investigation practice on a foundation that will not hold it.

02

Which Grade 8 decisions are reversible, and which are not

Families treat all Year 3 decisions as provisional because nothing formal is signed. In practice they vary a great deal in how reversible they are, and it is worth knowing which is which before deciding where to spend effort.

Mathematics set placement is reversible, but the window narrows every year. Moving up in Grade 8 means making up pace and a handful of method differences. Moving up in Grade 10 means making up two years of genuinely divergent work, and most schools will decline it on those grounds rather than on ability. If a set is going to be challenged, Year 3 is the cheap time.

Language acquisition phase placement is close to fixed by Year 3. Phases are set on prior learning and movement typically happens around Year 2, so a Grade 8 student in a low phase will usually finish the MYP there. That constrains which Diploma language routes are realistic, and it is a conversation to have with the school rather than a tutoring purchase.

The KHDA Arabic stream is effectively fixed, because it follows from whether the student is recorded as an Arab or non-Arab learner and KHDA requires the two groups to be taught separately. Science strand strengths are entirely reversible, because the sciences do not formally split until later and a weak strand in Year 3 is simply a weak strand. And the Diploma or A Level direction remains fully open in Grade 8, which is worth saying to anxious parents: nothing has been decided about Grade 11 yet.

03

The sciences in Year 3: one grade, three different problems

  • An integrated science grade can hide one weak strand entirely
  • Chemistry in Year 3: balancing equations is the procedural gate
  • Physics in Year 3: the problem is usually Year 2 algebra, not physics
  • Biology in Year 3: criterion C, evaluating one's own method, is the recurring loss

In most Dubai MYP schools the sciences appear on the report as one subject with four criterion scores, while in substance Year 3 is teaching three distinguishable disciplines. A student can be genuinely strong in biology, adequate in physics and lost in chemistry and still receive a middling integrated grade, which tells a parent nothing about what to do.

The chemistry problem in Year 3 is almost always equations. Particle theory is handled conceptually and most students cope; writing chemical change as a word equation and then a balanced symbol equation is a procedural skill that either gets secured or does not. A student who cannot balance confidently at thirteen carries that into every later chemistry topic, and no amount of revising reaction types compensates.

The physics problem is usually not physics. Forces, energy and motion in Year 3 are handled with numbers, which means unit conversion and rearranging a formula. A student who struggles here is normally a student whose Year 2 algebra is unsecured, and the correct intervention is algebra rather than more physics content. This is the most common misdiagnosis on a Grade 8 report.

The biology problem is criterion C. The content is accessible and students generally understand it; the marks go on processing and evaluating, where they are asked to present data properly and then evaluate the reliability of their own method. Students describe what happened instead. Three taught sentence patterns — what limited the result, why it mattered, what would improve it — move the criterion within a term, and the same move pays again in the Diploma internal assessment four years later.

04

How to get a set reviewed, and what evidence a school will accept

  • Ask in writing: review frequency, evidence used, and whether mid-year movement happens
  • Build criterion B and C evidence; topic tests mostly show criterion A
  • An investigation with a justified general rule is the single most useful artefact
  • Be ready for the answer that the set is fair; nothing about the Diploma is decided yet

This is the practical heart of a Grade 8 page, because it is the thing families most often attempt and most often attempt badly. Schools review sets on performance evidence against criteria. They do not review them on a parent's assessment of their child, on a tutor's letter, or on effort. Understanding that converts a frustrating conversation into a workable plan.

Start by asking the school three questions in writing: how often sets are reviewed, what evidence the review uses, and whether movement up can happen mid-year or only at year end. The answers vary considerably between Dubai schools, and they determine the timeline. There is no point building evidence for a review that happens in June if the decision for the following year is taken in April.

Then build the right evidence. In mathematics that means completed investigations in which the student states and justifies a general rule, and criterion C work with correct notation, because those are the criteria that distinguish the routes. In the sciences it means criterion B and C work: a designed investigation with controlled variables and an honest evaluation. Topic tests matter less than families assume, because they mostly test criterion A, which is rarely where the set boundary sits.

Finally, be prepared for the honest answer. Sometimes the set is a fair reflection, the student is working at their genuine current ceiling, and the right advice is to do well in the set they are in rather than to spend a year and a tutoring budget on a move that will not happen. A provider who tells you this is more use than one who takes the booking. And a student who finishes Year 3 strong in the standard route has lost nothing: nothing about the Diploma has been decided in Grade 8.

05

What Grade 8 support costs in Dubai, and the cheaper alternative

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online in Dubai run AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Bestimate's published Dubai 2026 monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are market figures, attributed, rather than our price list.

A set-review campaign in Grade 8 is a defined block rather than a standing slot: typically eight to twelve sessions aimed at producing specific criterion evidence before a known review date. Bought that way it is a predictable cost with a date attached. Bought as an open-ended weekly hour 'to help with maths' it drifts into a year of expenditure with no decision point, which is the pattern most Dubai families fall into.

There is a cheaper alternative that families rarely consider, and it is often the correct one. Where the real obstacle is an unsecured Year 2 topic — algebraic manipulation above all — the intervention is a short securing block on that topic rather than a year of Year 3 support. Four sessions on rearranging expressions can recover more Year 3 marks than twenty sessions on Year 3 content, because the Year 3 content assumes the Year 2 skill.

The longer arithmetic favours acting now. A set challenged in Grade 8 costs a defined block. The same conversation attempted in Grade 10 is usually declined, and the consequence shows up as a Diploma mathematics route that was never genuinely on the table. One piece of budget context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, which makes tuition the variable line and its timing the decision that matters.

06

Online or in the room for a thirteen-year-old

  • A set-review campaign needs dated, regular output across a fixed window
  • The required skill is reading an extended-route descriptor, not proximity
  • Bestimate puts in-home at AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 online
  • We offer no UAE home visits; home tutoring is an India-only service

A reasonable objection, and worth a straight answer. For a thirteen-year-old a person in the room has advantages: attention is easier to sustain, a glance catches confusion a camera misses, and some students admit to not understanding more readily face to face. Those are real and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

Set against them, the Grade 8 requirement is unusually specific. What this student needs is somebody who can mark an investigation against the extended-route criterion B descriptor and say precisely what is missing from the generalisation. The pool of people who can do that in a given Dubai community at the hour the child is home is far narrower than the pool available over video, and the in-home travel premium — Bestimate puts visits at AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor — buys the commute rather than that expertise.

There is also a reliability argument that matters more in Year 3 than earlier. A set-review campaign depends on regular, dated output across eight to twelve sessions before a fixed review date. A video slot survives traffic, activities, family travel and a change of address. An in-home arrangement typically loses two or three sessions to those over the same period, which in a timed campaign is the difference between having the evidence and not.

IB Gram's position is fixed rather than preferential: all UAE tuition is one-to-one, live over video, and we do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we offer only in India. If physical presence is your requirement for a thirteen-year-old, we are not the right provider and will say so plainly rather than arguing you out of it.

07

Academic honesty when the work is being used as evidence

  • Allowed: descriptors explained, structure modelled on a different problem, drafts read
  • Not allowed: writing, dictating the generalisation, producing the investigation
  • For a set review the test is whether the student could explain it unaided to a head of department
  • Official syllabus documents and mark schemes are linked, never reproduced or supplied

This matters acutely in Grade 8 and for a reason specific to the year. If a student's investigations are being produced partly to support a set review, the temptation to improve them beyond what the student actually did is at its strongest, and the result would be worse than useless: a student moved into a route they cannot sustain on the basis of work they did not produce.

What a tutor may do is substantial. They may teach the content, explain the criterion descriptors and what the band above requires, model how an investigation of that type is structured using a different problem, discuss and challenge the student's reasoning, read the student's own draft and say what is missing against the criterion, and teach notation and referencing conventions.

What a tutor may not do is write any part of the submitted work, dictate the general rule or its justification, produce the investigation, or correct a draft into a finished state. For a set-review campaign specifically, the test is whether the student could sit with the head of department and explain every line of the investigation unaided. If not, the evidence is false and the review it produces is a disservice.

The same principle governs materials. We do not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; we reference them and link the official source. At Diploma level this road ends with operators selling completed Internal Assessments, which is an IB malpractice trigger where the consequence falls on the student. Grade 8 is a good place to establish that the student's own work is the thing being judged.

08

The KHDA layer and the Grade 8 timetable

  • Eight MYP subject groups plus the KHDA mandatory subjects, with a heavier Year 3 load
  • Separate Arab and non-Arab classes required; combined classes strictly prohibited
  • Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education must hold appropriate KHDA approval
  • Additional or different content for mandatory subjects needs Ministry permission

A Grade 8 student in a Dubai private school carries eight MYP subject groups plus the UAE mandatory subjects, and in Year 3 the academic load inside those subjects has also grown. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA requirements due for implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. It requires Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, Arabic as the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, and the school's licensed-curriculum language for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies. It also requires that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects.

On instructional time, KHDA calculates mandatory-subject time on a 40-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that any mandatory subject lesson should be at least 25 minutes. The practical point for a Year 3 family planning a set-review campaign is that the week is already full, and adding two sessions without removing anything usually produces worse work rather than more of it.

On content, KHDA states that for the mandatory UAE subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Support for Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies therefore works from the school's own material and the official curriculum rather than from a parallel scheme, and a provider offering you their own Arabic programme for these subjects is offering something that rule does not permit.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and a Grade 8 evening

Grade 8 brings more homework and, in many schools, the first real assessment pressure. The realistic session time depends on the commute more than on the family's preference.

Dubai Hills Estate

Schooling inside the community keeps the run short, so a 4.30pm weekday slot survives a term. Useful for a Grade 8 student building set-review evidence, which needs regularity rather than intensity.

Al Barsha and Tecom

Central and close to several clusters, which makes two sessions a week realistic. A good base for a student working on both extended mathematics and a science strand at once.

Arabian Ranches and Mudon

Villa communities with a long run for some schools. Expect 5pm or later on weekdays, and test any earlier slot for a fortnight before building a term plan around it.

Mirdif and Al Khawaneej

Established eastern Dubai with short commutes and a dense school presence. Families here usually manage a Grade 8 session before evening activities rather than after them.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Short runs to the older school belt. The competition for the hour is activities rather than traffic, which in Grade 8 is a real constraint as sport commitments grow.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Apartment living with schools mostly a drive away, so the evening slot is standard. Weekend sessions are often more dependable for a Grade 8 student here during assessment weeks.

Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several institutions with short journeys, which makes an earlier weekday start achievable. Suited to a twice-weekly block aimed at a set review.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Spread-out villa districts with longer drives. A fixed video slot avoids losing an hour either side of a session, which is the difference between twice a week and once.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school how sets are reviewed

Three questions in writing: how often, on what evidence, and whether movement up can happen mid-year or only at year end. The answers set the timeline for everything else, and there is no sense building evidence for a June review if next year's decision is taken in April.

  2. 02

Diagnose whether the set is a ceiling or an artefact

The trial session and one follow-up establish which. A student capped at the generalisation step with secure algebra is an artefact; a student who cannot manipulate an expression is not ready for a set move this term, and saying so is more useful than six weeks of practice on a weak foundation.

A free trial lesson with the matched tutor

One session, no charge, with a tutor who teaches the extended route and knows its descriptors. By the end the tutor should be able to say which criterion caps the student and what the band above requires. If the match is wrong you say so, before any payment.

  4. 04

Build the evidence the review will actually use

Completed investigations with justified general rules, criterion C work with correct notation, and in the sciences a designed investigation with controlled variables and an honest evaluation. Topic tests matter less, because they mostly demonstrate criterion A, which is rarely where the set boundary sits.

  5. 05

Fix the prior-year gap if that is the real obstacle

Four to six sessions on Year 2 algebraic manipulation often recovers more Year 3 marks than twenty sessions of Year 3 content, because Year 3 assumes the Year 2 skill. This is cheaper and faster than a set campaign, and sometimes it is the whole answer.

  6. 06

Stop at the review, whichever way it goes

The block ends at the review date. If the move happens, support shifts to holding the new route. If it does not, the right advice is usually to do well in the current set rather than repeat the campaign — nothing about the Diploma has been decided in Grade 8.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We name what actually separates the routes

Not topic coverage. Standard and extended MYP mathematics differ in whether an investigation must end in a justified general rule, which means covering extra content will not move a student between them. Working on the right thing is most of the value here.

We will tell you when the set is fair

Sometimes a student is working at their genuine current ceiling and a year of effort will not produce a move. Saying so is more useful than taking the booking, and a student who finishes Year 3 strong in the standard route has lost nothing — Grade 11 is still open.

Evidence of the kind a school will accept

Reviews run on criterion performance, not on parental conviction or a tutor's letter. The work produced is the type a head of department looks at: investigations with justified generalisations, criterion C work with correct notation, designed experiments with honest evaluations.

Prior-year gaps checked before Year 3 content is sold

The most common misdiagnosis on a Grade 8 report is a physics problem that is actually unsecured Year 2 algebra. Four sessions on manipulation can recover more marks than twenty on Year 3 content, and it is cheaper, so we look there first.

Honesty, especially when work is evidence

A set move built on work the student did not produce puts them in a route they cannot sustain. The test is whether the student could explain every line to a head of department unaided, and that standard is stated here rather than buried in terms.

Clear about what we are not

No home visits anywhere in the UAE, no KHDA approval or regulator accreditation, no UAE office. Every AED figure here is attributed to whoever published it, and where we cannot match a subject at a workable hour we say so rather than substituting.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the difference between standard and extended MYP mathematics in Grade 8?+

Not topic coverage, which is what most families assume. Both routes cover indices and standard form, linear graphs, Pythagoras and probability in Year 3. The extended route handles simultaneous equations algebraically, carries harder manipulation, and crucially expects an investigation to end in a justified general rule rather than a described pattern. A standard-route answer says the numbers increase by three each time; an extended-route answer states the nth term and shows why it holds. That is the real boundary, which is why covering extra content does not move a student between routes.

Can my child move up a maths set in Grade 8, and how?+

Usually yes, and Year 3 is the cheap time to try, because by Grade 10 the two routes have genuinely diverged in content and most schools decline moves on those grounds. The method is evidence: completed investigations in which the student states and justifies a general rule, plus criterion C work with correct notation. Ask the school in writing how often sets are reviewed, what evidence the review uses, and whether movement can happen mid-year. Topic tests matter less than families expect, because they mainly demonstrate criterion A.

My child has one science grade but is only weak in chemistry. What now?+

Target the strand, not the subject. In most Dubai MYP schools the sciences report as one grade with four criterion scores while Year 3 teaches three distinguishable disciplines, so a middling integrated grade can conceal one weak strand entirely. In Year 3 chemistry the issue is almost always equations: writing chemical change as a word equation and then a balanced symbol equation is a procedural skill that either gets secured or does not. Four to eight sessions on exactly that is usually more effective than general science support.

Why is my child struggling with Grade 8 physics when they understand the concepts?+

Because Year 3 physics is quantitative and the obstacle is usually algebra rather than physics. Forces, energy and motion are handled with numbers, which means unit conversion and rearranging a formula. A student who cannot reliably rearrange an expression — a Year 2 skill — will struggle with every numerical physics question regardless of how well they understand the concept. This is the most common misdiagnosis on a Grade 8 report, and the correct intervention is a short securing block on manipulation rather than more physics content.

Which Grade 8 decisions can still be changed later?+

Science strand weaknesses are fully reversible at any point, and the Diploma or A Level direction remains entirely open — nothing about Grade 11 is decided in Year 3. Mathematics set placement is reversible now and rarely by Grade 10, because the routes diverge in content. Language acquisition phase placement is close to fixed by Year 3, since movement typically happens around Year 2. The KHDA Arabic stream is effectively fixed, because it follows from the Arab or non-Arab distinction and KHDA requires the two groups to be taught separately.

How long does a set-review campaign take in Grade 8?+

Typically eight to twelve sessions aimed at a known review date, which is why the first step is asking the school when the review happens. Bought that way it is a defined cost with an end point. Bought as an open-ended weekly hour to help with maths generally, it drifts into a year of expenditure with no decision moment, which is the pattern most families fall into. If the diagnosis shows a prior-year algebra gap is the real obstacle, a four to six session securing block comes first and the campaign is deferred.

What if the set is actually a fair reflection of my child's ability?+

Then the honest advice is to do well in the set they are in rather than spend a year and a budget on a move that will not happen. A student who finishes Year 3 strong in the standard route has lost nothing concrete: the Diploma or A Level direction is decided at Grade 10 options on Years 4 and 5 performance, not in Grade 8. What is worth doing in that case is securing criterion B and C habits, which are the cheapest things to change at thirteen and the ones every later year assumes.

Does a Grade 8 maths set affect which IB Diploma maths course is available?+

Indirectly but significantly, which is the real stake. The Diploma offers Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, each at Higher or Standard Level, and Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is what most engineering and physics degree routes expect. A student who spends Years 3 to 5 in a standard MYP mathematics set is rarely steered towards it at options. That is not a rule anywhere, but it is the pattern, and it is why a set that is an artefact rather than a ceiling is worth challenging in Year 3.

How much does Grade 8 MYP tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online run AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Bestimate's published Dubai monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240-600 at the budget end and AED 600-1,200 in the middle. A set-review block of eight to twelve sessions is the common Grade 8 purchase. Where organisation rather than content is the issue, the AED 33-65 supervision band — Tutopiya from AED 33-52, EdFlik from AED 45-65 — is the correct and cheaper fit.

Is online tutoring suitable for a thirteen-year-old working towards a set review?+

For this job, yes, with the honest caveat that a person in the room has real advantages for a younger student. The Grade 8 requirement is specific: someone who can mark an investigation against the extended-route criterion B descriptor and say what the generalisation is missing. That pool is far narrower in a single Dubai community at a fixed hour than online. A review campaign also needs regular dated output across eight to twelve sessions, and a video slot survives traffic, activities and travel that typically cost an in-home arrangement two or three sessions.

Can a tutor help write the investigation we are using as set-review evidence?+

No, and here the boundary matters more than usual. A set move built on work the student did not produce places them in a route they cannot sustain, which is worse than no move at all. A tutor may explain the criterion descriptor, model how an investigation of that type is structured using a different problem, challenge the student's reasoning, read their own draft and say what is missing, and teach notation. The test is whether the student could sit with the head of department and explain every line unaided.

What does criterion C ask for in Grade 8 sciences?+

Processing and evaluating: presenting data properly and then evaluating the reliability of the student's own method. This is where Year 3 biology marks are most consistently lost, because students describe what happened rather than evaluating it. Three taught sentence patterns usually move the criterion within a term — what limited the result, why that mattered, and what would improve it. The same move pays again four years later in the Diploma internal assessment, where the criteria have a similar shape and are worth roughly a quarter of the subject grade.

How does research work change between Grade 7 and Grade 8?+

The scaffolding is withdrawn. In Year 2 individuals and societies gives students a research question and often a source set; in Year 3 they are expected to form the question, select sources and evaluate them, with criterion B and D carrying most of the loss. A student who always worked from a given question feels this immediately and often reads it as a drop in ability. It is not — it is a new skill, and forming a workable question from a broad topic is the single hardest part of it to learn late.

Do you teach Arabic and Islamic Education for a Grade 8 student in Dubai?+

Yes, from the school's own material and the official curriculum. KHDA states that for the mandatory UAE subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, so no parallel scheme is introduced. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, specifies Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for first-language Arabic and for Islamic Education for Arab students, and requires that school teachers of these subjects hold appropriate KHDA approval — a reasonable question to ask the school.

My child joined a Dubai school mid-year and was put in a lower set. Is that permanent?+

It should not be, and it is worth raising early. Transfer placements are often made on a report from a different system in the first week of term, which is a weak basis for a track that tends to persist to Grade 10. Ask the school in writing how and when the placement will be reviewed and what evidence the review will use. Then build that evidence: investigations with justified general rules in mathematics, designed and evaluated experiments in the sciences. A placement made from a transcript is exactly the case where a review is most justified.

Should we add two sessions a week in Grade 8 to make up ground?+

Usually not without removing something. A Year 3 week already carries eight MYP subject groups plus the UAE mandatory subjects, and KHDA calculates mandatory-subject time on a 40-minute lesson unit with a 25-minute advised minimum per lesson. Adding two sessions to a full week tends to produce worse work rather than more of it. The better pattern is one weekly session during term plus a holiday block, since the weeks after a long break — with no homework competing — are the most productive period available.

Find out whether the set is a ceiling or an artefact

Grade 8 is the year a snapshot becomes a label, and almost everything worth doing follows from one question: is the set a fair reflection of capability, or the residue of a weak term, a mid-year transfer or an unsecured Year 2 skill? Ask the school how sets are reviewed and on what evidence, then build that evidence — investigations with justified general rules, criterion C work with correct notation. Book a free trial lesson and bring two pieces of marked work. If the set turns out to be fair, we will tell you, because nothing about Grade 11 has been decided yet. Sessions are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time; we do not send tutors to UAE homes.
