IB Tutor near me in Dubai Internet City

A search for an IB tutor near me from Dubai Internet City returns a map. What a Diploma student needs is a syllabus: which papers their subject has, what each is weighted, which Internal Assessment type applies, and which command terms the mark scheme rewards. This page sets out that structure group by group, names the traps that cost marks across every subject, and explains how lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Internet City

The map cannot tell you what the mark scheme wants

Dubai Internet City is a free zone in Al Sufouh with the Red Line Metro station that serves this whole strip, offices and innovation space, residential towers and no school. A Diploma student living here travels out to GEMS Wellington International School along the coast, to the Al Barsha cluster, or to the IB schools in Emirates Hills and the villa belt. A search for a tutor near that address ranks by distance and advertising, neither of which knows anything about Paper 3.

That is the gap this page is written to close. An IB Diploma student is carrying six subjects across six groups, each with a different assessment structure, a different Internal Assessment type and a different set of command terms that the mark scheme actually credits. A tutor who understands that structure is useful. A tutor who lives nearby and teaches the underlying subject well may still spend a term on the wrong thing, because the subject and the assessment are not the same object.

The clearest evidence is in how marks are lost. Students rarely fail because they do not know the material. They lose marks because they answered a describe question when evaluate was asked, because a correct conclusion arrived without the reasoning that earns the method marks, because the Internal Assessment question was unanswerable with the data available, or because a 4,000-word Extended Essay was written as an extended description. Those are assessment failures, and a tutor who has read the scheme can name them in one session.

The IB is also the thinnest curriculum in this city. KHDA's 2024-25 figures put 387,441 students across 227 private schools licensed for 17 curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian schools 26 per cent, American 14 per cent and International Baccalaureate schools 7 per cent. Split that 7 per cent across three programmes, six subject groups and two levels, and the number of exactly matched specialists inside any radius of Al Sufouh is small enough to make proximity a poor filter.

What follows is therefore structural rather than motivational. The assessment shape of each subject group, the command terms that cross all of them, what a past-paper session should actually contain, the Internal Assessment types and their specific traps, and the two pieces of assessed writing in the core. It is the information a parent needs to tell a specialist from a generalist in one phone call.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, usually between 4.30pm and 9pm. A Diploma session is a shared past paper, a mark scheme open alongside it, and the student's own answer annotated line by line, all of which travel over a screen without loss.

At a glance

  • Internet City has no school; students travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or the villa belt
  • Six subject groups, each with its own assessment structure and Internal Assessment type
  • Most lost marks are assessment failures rather than knowledge failures
  • IB schools hold about 7 per cent of Dubai private enrolment, split three ways again
  • Command terms are the trap that crosses every subject in the Diploma
  • Lessons run over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with no travel in the price
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Internet City families ask about these three IB programmes and, frequently, about the British route their child's friends are taking. The assessment logic differs completely between them.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, scored out of 45. Each subject carries an Internal Assessment worth roughly a fifth to a quarter of the grade. The Diploma also has published conditions beyond a points total, covering low grades and the core, which your school's IB coordinator holds in its current form.

UAE IB schools sit the May session, with November as the second sitting used mainly for retakes. Specific IB session and results dates are not published here, because ibo.org blocks automated checking and no date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself; the coordinator at your child's school is the authority on them and on the current award conditions.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each marked against four criteria out of eight, with the grade accumulating from tasks across the year rather than from papers. MYP 5 ends with the Personal Project. A student here needs criterion literacy rather than past-paper technique, which is why a Diploma specialist is not automatically the right match for a younger sibling.

Some Dubai IB schools run the MYP through all five years and others enter students for IGCSE at 16, so children in the same Internet City tower can be on different tracks. That matters when a family buys support for two children at once and assumes one tutor can serve both.

PYPAges 3-12 · Early Years to Grade 5

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, organised by transdisciplinary themes rather than subjects, ending with the Grade 5 Exhibition. Reports describe approaches to learning rather than marks. Support at this stage is deliberately light: reading fluency, number sense and written expression, built so it feeds the inquiry rather than running a parallel curriculum.

The nearest full IB continuum primaries to this strip are in Al Barsha South and Emirates Hills rather than in Al Sufouh, so primary families here already travel. Where the plan is to continue into the MYP, extended writing stamina matters more than curriculum coverage, because the criterion system arrives at MYP 1 and surprises most parents.

ALTAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level as the alternative at 16

Three or four subjects studied in depth, with no equivalent of the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge and no requirement to carry six subjects. Assessment is almost entirely by examination, which suits some students considerably better and is a legitimate choice rather than a lesser one.

The decision between the two routes is usually made at the end of Year 11 or MYP 5 and is better made on assessment style than on prestige. A student who writes well and works steadily across many commitments tends to do better in the Diploma; a student who wants depth in three subjects tends to do better at A Level. Both are available within a short bus ride of this strip.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects requested most from this strip, with what each component actually assesses and the specific trap in each.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Three papers at Higher Level, two at Standard, with HL Paper 3 given to extended problem-solving. The trap is reaching a correct answer by a route the examiner cannot see, which forfeits the method marks. The Exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the mathematics used.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics with a graphic display calculator throughout. The trap is reporting calculator output without interpreting it in context, which is precisely what the mark scheme is built to catch. Students who chose it as the lighter option meet demanding statistics at Higher Level.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and data analysis, Paper 2 is extended response, and a data booklet is provided. The trap is an explanation answer that states a true fact and stops, where the scheme credits each link in the chain separately. The Internal Assessment is one investigation marked out of 24.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and reactivity, with Higher Level deepening energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. The trap is memorised reactions failing on an unfamiliar substrate, which Paper 2 supplies deliberately. Reasoning from electron movement generalises; reaction lists do not.

Biology

HL and SL

Heavy content assessed through exact command terms. The trap is over-writing: a student who tells the examiner everything they know about a process scores below one who answers what was asked. Data-based questions are the cheapest marks and the least deliberately practised part of the course.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy carries real weight and Higher Level adds quantitative work and a policy paper. The Internal Assessment is a set of commentaries on published articles, and the trap is summarising the article instead of applying a named concept and evaluating with it.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a pre-released case for Paper 1 and an HL extension. The Internal Assessment is a research project on a real organisation, and the trap is choosing a company whose data cannot be obtained, which is usually discovered six weeks in.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen textual analysis in Paper 1, a comparative essay in Paper 2, plus the Individual Oral and, at Higher Level, the essay. The trap is narrating the text rather than analysing how meaning is constructed, which confident readers do most. Annotation discipline is the fix.

Psychology

HL and SL

Study recall tied to precise evaluation language, with an experimental Internal Assessment. The trap is accumulating studies without being able to deploy one against a command term. A small, well-rehearsed bank that answers several question types beats a long list that answers none.

History

HL and SL

Source papers and essay papers, with an Internal Assessment that is a historical investigation. The trap is describing sources rather than using them as evidence for a claim, and writing narrative where the question asked for evaluation of a historiographical position.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

An exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title, both assessed. The trap is treating it as an opinion piece. The marks sit in handling knowledge claims and counterclaims with real examples, and in answering the prescribed title as worded rather than the topic it gestures at.

The Extended Essay

Core, 4,000 words

An independent research essay in a chosen subject with a supervisor at school. The trap is a question too broad to answer in the word limit, and a structure that describes rather than argues. A tutor may coach method, referencing and reflection and may write none of the essay.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Diploma families on this strip use support, all one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Command-term and technique block

Four to six sessions spent on how answers are marked rather than on content: command terms, the structure each one requires, method visibility, and the difference between describing and evaluating. It applies across every subject the student takes at once, which makes it the best-value block in the Diploma and the one nobody requests.

  • Each command term practised on real past-paper questions
  • The student writes; the tutor marks against the scheme in front of them
  • Transfers to all six subjects, not just the one being taught
  • Usually four to six sessions and then stop

Weekly subject session at a stated level

One hour a week in a single subject at Higher or Standard Level, working the school's current topic and the next assessed piece. Higher Level is treated as a separate specification, because the reasoning demand and the additional content make it a different job rather than more of the same.

  • Fixed weekly hour, usually 5pm to 8.30pm Gulf Standard Time
  • Past-paper questions alongside the school's scheme of work
  • Written note each session on what moved and what did not
  • Recorded, so a technique session can be replayed before a test

Internal Assessment or core coaching

A short block across an Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge cycle, covering question framing, scope, method, referencing and reflection, with criterion-level feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is written, redrafted or supplied by the tutor at any stage.

  • A research question narrowed to something answerable with reachable sources
  • Criteria explained in the language the moderator uses
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts only
  • School supervisor remains the authority on the process

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Internet City

01

What a proximity search cannot tell you about a Diploma subject

  • Six factual questions distinguish a subject specialist from a generalist
  • Six subjects in the Diploma are assessed in six different ways
  • One revision approach across all six succeeds in about two of them
  • After subject and level are fixed, address stops being a variable

An IB tutor near me in Dubai Internet City returns, in order, tuition centres inland in Al Barsha, agencies with local advertising, international marketplaces and a few independent tutors. The ordering reflects distance, advertising spend and review volume on map listings. None of those signals knows whether the person at the other end can tell you what Physics Paper 1 contains or how an Economics commentary is marked.

The information you need instead is short and factual. For each subject: how many papers, what each is weighted, how long each lasts, what is permitted in the room, which Internal Assessment type applies and out of how many marks. A tutor who has taught the subject repeatedly answers all six without pausing. One who has not answers in general terms about building foundations, which is an honest answer to a different question.

This matters more in the Diploma than almost anywhere, because the six subjects a student carries are assessed in six different ways. Mathematics rewards visible method. Physics rewards a chain of reasoning. Biology punishes over-writing. English rewards analysis of construction rather than content. Economics rewards diagram accuracy and applied evaluation. A single approach to revision applied across all six will succeed in two of them.

Once the subject and level are fixed, the tutor's address stops being interesting. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Lessons run over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which puts a shared past paper and an open mark scheme on the screen and widens the pool from the handful of specialists within a drive of Al Sufouh to everyone teaching in this time zone.

02

Assessment structure by subject group

The Diploma organises subjects into groups, and each group has a characteristic assessment shape. Knowing the shape tells you what a term of support should be spent on, which is the single most useful planning fact a parent can hold.

Broadly: the sciences pair written papers with one investigation marked against published criteria. Mathematics pairs papers with the Exploration. The individuals and societies group pairs papers with a written assessment that is usually either a commentary set, a research project or a historical investigation. The language and literature group pairs papers with an oral component. Language acquisition pairs papers with oral and written assessment. The arts replace a written paper with portfolio and performance components.

The table below sets this out with the Internal Assessment type and what it is really testing. Exact weightings, durations and component names are set by the current subject guide and can change between versions, so confirm specifics with your child's school and the official documentation. The purpose here is to let you ask a prospective tutor a question with a right answer in it.

One structural point is worth drawing out. Because every subject has an internally assessed component with deadlines set by the school months before any examination, a DP2 student is almost always finishing coursework in the term when revision should be starting. That collision is a scheduling fact rather than a failing, and planning around it is more valuable than any individual lesson.

03

Command terms: the one trap that crosses every subject

If a student is losing marks in several subjects at once, command terms are the first thing to check and almost never the thing a family suspects. The Diploma uses a defined vocabulary of instructions, and each one specifies a different quantity and shape of answer. Students treat several of them as synonyms, and a paragraph of accurate material answering the wrong instruction scores very little.

The most expensive confusions are describe against explain, explain against evaluate, and state against justify. Describe asks what; explain asks why, with a mechanism; evaluate asks for a judgement with both sides present; justify asks for reasons supporting a stated position. A student who describes when asked to evaluate has not misunderstood the content, and will still lose most of the available marks.

This is cheap to fix and it transfers. Four to six sessions spent on command terms, practised on real past-paper questions with the student writing and the tutor marking against the scheme in front of them, improves answers in every subject the student takes rather than in the one being tutored. That makes it the best-value block in the Diploma, and almost nobody asks for it, because it does not look like subject teaching.

The table lists the terms that cost the most, with what each actually requires. The exact command-term list and its definitions sit in each subject guide, so check your child's subject for its own wording. The pattern, however, is consistent: the instruction tells you the shape, and the shape is worth marks independently of the content.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT EACH ONE ACTUALLY REQUIRES

StateA single answer with no working or reasoningA paragraph, wasting time earning nothing extraEarly short-answer questions in every paper

04

Higher Level against Standard Level, group by group

  • Higher Level raises reasoning depth across components, not just content volume
  • Science Higher Level content often arrives late and is half-learned
  • Mathematics Higher Level adds the paper students have practised least
  • A move down a level is simple early in DP1 and hard later; check prerequisites first

Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra chapters, and treating it that way is how a DP1 student ends up in difficulty without anyone noticing until the first mock. In most groups Higher Level adds content and raises the depth of reasoning demanded across every component, which means the student needs a different kind of practice rather than more of the same.

In the sciences the additional content tends to arrive late in the course, often in the DP2 autumn when the Extended Essay and other Internal Assessments are live, and it is frequently half-learned as a result. Scheduling that content deliberately earlier is a planning decision that changes outcomes more than spring revision does. In mathematics, Higher Level adds a third paper devoted to extended problem-solving, which most students have practised least because there are fewer such questions about.

In the essay subjects the Higher Level demand is different again: a longer or additional written component, and a higher expectation of evaluation rather than exposition. A student who writes fluently and descriptively can do well at Standard Level and plateau at Higher Level for reasons that have nothing to do with effort or interest.

The practical point is about choosing and changing. Three Higher Levels plus the core is a genuinely heavy week, and a subject that consumes two evenings is being paid for by the other five. A move from Higher to Standard within the same subject is usually administratively simple early in DP1 and progressively harder after that. Check the intended university requirement first, because some programmes specify Higher Level, and requirements vary by institution, country and intake year.

05

What a past-paper session should actually contain

  • Attempt under time, then mark in front of the student against the official scheme
  • Rewrite one answer immediately to the identified standard
  • One line into an error log per session, naming the loss rather than the topic
  • A session where the student writes nothing has taught the wrong thing

Most tutoring hours in this market are spent discussing content. A more productive hour has a specific shape, and it is worth insisting on because the difference is visible in marked work within a month.

The student attempts a question or section under time, before the session or at the start of it. The tutor then marks it in front of them, against the official scheme, out loud, saying which marks were awarded and which were not and why. The student rewrites one answer immediately, to the standard identified. The session ends with one line added to a running error log, naming the loss rather than the topic.

That structure does three things a discussion cannot. It produces evidence the parent can read. It teaches the student what the scheme credits, which is knowledge they can apply without the tutor present. And it builds an error log that becomes the revision document for the final term, written in the student's own losses rather than in a generic topic list.

What should not be in the session is the tutor solving problems while the student watches. It is comfortable, it feels productive, and it produces very little, because Diploma marks come from the student's own written output under time. A session in which the student writes nothing has taught them something about the subject and nothing about the examination, and in DP2 only one of those is still available to be fixed.

06

The Internal Assessment types and the trap in each

Every Diploma subject has an internally assessed component, and they are not variations on one task. A science investigation, a mathematics Exploration, an economics commentary set, a business research project, a historical investigation and an arts process portfolio test genuinely different things and fail in genuinely different ways.

What they share is the timing problem. School deadlines fall months before any examination, so coursework and revision compete, and a student with three Internal Assessments live in the same term will do all three adequately rather than one well. The second shared feature is that the biggest single determinant of the mark is the decision made in the first week: the research question, the topic, the organisation, the source set. After that, the ceiling is largely fixed.

The table names the trap in each, because they are specific and predictable. A tutor who can name the trap for your child's subject has supervised these before. A tutor who talks about coursework support in general has not, and the distinction matters most in the month when the work is due and least when it is being chosen, which is the opposite of when families go looking.

The honesty boundary applies to all of them identically. A tutor may teach method, narrow a question, explain the criteria, teach referencing and data handling, and read the student's own draft and say precisely where it fails against a descriptor. A tutor may not write, redraft or restructure any part of it, and may not supply a model to adapt. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price; the risk in that transaction sits with the student, and the school supervisor remains the authority on process throughout.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT BY SUBJECT - THE SPECIFIC TRAP

SciencesOne scientific investigation, 24 marksA question too broad to produce a usable datasetBefore any data is collected
MathematicsThe ExplorationAn ambitious topic whose mathematics is beyond the level, left half-finishedAt topic choice

HistoryA historical investigationDescribing sources rather than evaluating them as evidenceAt question and source-set choice

07

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay as assessed writing

  • Theory of Knowledge marks sit in knowledge claims and specific examples, not opinion
  • Answer the prescribed title as worded, not the topic it gestures at
  • The Extended Essay fails on scope; narrowing the question is the highest-value hour
  • Both are coached within the rules, and the school supervisor owns the process

The two pieces of assessed writing in the core are treated by most students as obligations rather than as assessments, which is why they so often cost points. Theory of Knowledge produces an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. The Extended Essay is 4,000 words of independent research in a chosen subject, supervised at school. Both are marked against published criteria and both contribute to the final award.

The Theory of Knowledge trap is treating the prescribed title as a topic rather than as a question with specific wording. Marks sit in handling knowledge claims and counterclaims with real, specific examples, and in answering the title as it is worded rather than the general area it gestures towards. Students write opinion essays with examples attached, which reads well and marks poorly.

The Extended Essay trap is scope. A question too broad cannot be answered in 4,000 words, so the essay becomes a description of a field rather than an argument about a question, and the criteria that reward focus and argument are the ones that suffer. Narrowing the question is the single highest-value hour available, and it has to happen in DP1 rather than in the DP2 autumn when the deadline is visible.

Both are coached, never written. A tutor may teach question framing, scope, research method, referencing, academic register and reflection, and may read the student's own draft and name where it fails against a criterion. A tutor may not write any part of it, may not restructure a draft on the student's behalf, may not supply a model to adapt and may not produce the reflections. Your school's coordinator and supervisor hold the current requirements and own the process; ask them about the award conditions that involve the core rather than taking a figure from a tutoring website.

08

Points, awards and the questions to put to the coordinator

  • Six subjects plus core points, to a maximum of 45
  • Award conditions beyond the total exist and change; the coordinator holds the current set
  • Four questions in DP1 are worth more than any tutoring purchase
  • Ministry equivalency is an authority process; no IB points figure should be quoted without a Ministry source

The Diploma is scored out of 45: six subjects at up to seven points each, plus points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay combination. Beyond the total, the award has published conditions covering how many low subject grades are permitted and what the core must achieve. Those conditions change between versions of the regulations, and your school's IB coordinator holds the current set.

We deliberately do not publish those thresholds. ibo.org blocks automated checking, which means no IB figure in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and a wrong threshold is the kind of error a family acts on. If a tutoring website quotes you a precise award condition without citing the IB or your school, treat it the way you would treat a quoted examination date from the same source.

There are four questions worth putting to the coordinator in DP1, and they are more valuable than any tutoring purchase. What are the current award conditions, including the core requirement? What are the school's internal deadlines for every Internal Assessment and for the Extended Essay? Which session will the cohort sit, and what is the school's position on retakes? And, if a subject or level change is being considered, what is the deadline after which it is no longer possible?

Those four answers shape where support should go and when. They also tend to reveal the real problem: a student who is short of points is usually short because of one subject and the core rather than across the board, and knowing which makes the difference between buying one well-targeted term and buying four thin ones. Separately, if you need the Diploma recognised in the UAE, Ministry of Education equivalency is a process you complete with the authority, no IB points figure for it appears in the source we could read, and tutoring is neither required for it nor able to accelerate it.

Where we tutor

Where this strip's Diploma students live

Requests reach us from the free zones and the communities either side. The differences that matter here are the school destination and the hour the evening starts.

Dubai Internet City

The free zone with the Metro station serving this strip, mostly commercial with residential towers. No school inside it. Diploma students travel inland or along the coast, so sessions settle at six o'clock or later across the week.

Dubai Media City

Seaward along the same strip with the tram stop. Identical school destinations and journey times, which is why the subject match rather than the address is what differentiates one arrangement from another.

Dubai Knowledge Park

University and training campuses along the tram line with residential towers attached. An older resident profile, so this is the district that generates the most DP2 and university-preparation requests on the strip.

Al Sufouh

The residential strip either side of the free zones, within walking distance of Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School. The shortest school runs here, which makes a 5pm start workable for some households.

Barsha Heights

Inland of the Metro line, dense apartments and the shortest run to the Al Barsha cluster. Children are home earlier, so earlier slots hold, which matters most in the DP2 spring when a twice-weekly block is needed.

Dubai Marina and JBR

The largest resident population in range and the slowest evening roads. Later slots dominate and recorded lessons get used heavily, because Diploma deadlines do not pause for a school trip or a family journey.

Emirates Hills, The Meadows and The Springs

The villa belt behind Sheikh Zayed Road with two established IB schools. Most of the strip's Higher Level requests in the sciences and mathematics come from this cluster.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Its own Metro station and a wide spread of school destinations. Steady demand for Economics and Business Management Internal Assessment supervision, which is the most seasonal request of the year.

School ecosystem

Al Sufouh and the tram corridor

The gates nearest the strip, where the IB appears mainly at Diploma level. GEMS Wellington International School runs both British and IB routes from one site, so a student can be preparing for Paper 2 while a classmate prepares for an A Level paper.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, the level and the component

Which subject, Higher or Standard, and which component is losing marks: a paper, an oral, or the Internal Assessment. Those three facts let the match be exact, and they are what a specialist will ask for first rather than a general description of the difficulty.

  2. 02

Send one marked paper or a mock

Marked work is where assessment failures are visible: describe answers where evaluate was asked, correct conclusions with no visible method, over-writing in biology, a commentary that summarised the article. The diagnosis takes minutes from real evidence and is guesswork without it.

  3. 03

Matched by subject and level, with limits stated

Higher Level is treated as a separate specification. If no suitable specialist is free in the hour you need, you are told that with the earliest realistic alternative, including when the match would be a tutor based outside the UAE teaching in Gulf Standard Time.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson on a past-paper question

One lesson at no cost, worked on a real question from your child's own subject and level, marked against the official scheme during the session. Afterwards you get a written note naming the largest single loss and what the first four sessions would target, before anything is paid.

    Attempt, mark, rewrite, log

Every session follows the same shape: the student attempts under time, the tutor marks against the scheme out loud, the student rewrites one answer immediately, and one line goes into the error log. By the final term that log is the revision document, written in the student's own losses.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the assessment, not just the subject

Six Diploma subjects are assessed in six different ways, and a single revision approach succeeds in about two of them. Matching on subject and level and then working from the real paper structure is what separates useful teaching from a pleasant hour of content.

Command terms treated as the cross-subject lever

A student losing marks in several subjects at once usually has a command-term problem, not six content problems. Four to six sessions on it improves every subject the student takes, which makes it the best-value block in the Diploma and the one almost nobody requests.

Sessions built on marked work, not discussion

Attempt under time, marked live against the scheme, one answer rewritten immediately, one line into an error log. That produces evidence a parent can read and skills the student can use without the tutor present. A session where the student writes nothing teaches the wrong thing.

Internal Assessment traps named per subject

A science investigation, an Exploration, an economics commentary and a business project fail in different, predictable ways, and the ceiling is set in the first week. A tutor who can name your child's subject-specific trap has supervised these before; one who talks about coursework support in general has not.

No unverified IB figures

ibo.org blocks automated checking, so no IB session date or award threshold is published here. Those come from your school's coordinator. A tutoring site quoting a precise award condition without a source should be treated the way you would treat a quoted examination date from the same place.

No travel premium and no false authority

Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. It holds no approval or accreditation from any board or regulator and has no UAE office.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Internet City: your questions answered

What six questions should I ask to tell an IB specialist from a general tutor?+

How many papers does this subject have at my child's level? What is each one weighted? How long is each? What is permitted in the examination room? Which Internal Assessment type applies and out of how many marks? And which command terms cost your students the most? Someone who has taught the subject repeatedly answers all six without pausing. Someone who has not answers in general terms about foundations and confidence, which is an honest answer to a different question than the one you asked.

My child is losing marks in several subjects at once. What is the likely cause?+

Command terms, before anything else. The Diploma uses a defined vocabulary of instructions and each specifies a different shape of answer, so a student who describes when asked to evaluate loses most of the marks on a question they understood perfectly well. Because the problem is in how answers are written rather than in any one subject, it shows up everywhere simultaneously. Four to six sessions on command terms, practised on real questions and marked against the scheme, improves all six subjects.

What is the difference between explain and evaluate in an IB paper?+

Explain asks why something happens, with each causal link made explicit: this rises, so that falls, so the outcome changes. Evaluate asks for a judgement, with both sides present and a conclusion that commits to one. A student who explains when asked to evaluate produces accurate work and leaves the judgement marks on the table. The exact command-term definitions sit in each subject guide, so check your child's subject, but the structural difference is consistent across the Diploma.

What should a productive IB tutoring hour actually look like?+

The student attempts a question under time, the tutor marks it out loud against the official scheme saying which marks were and were not awarded, the student rewrites one answer immediately to the identified standard, and one line goes into a running error log naming the loss. That produces evidence you can read and skills the student can use alone. What should not happen is the tutor solving problems while the student watches, which feels productive and changes very little.

How does the Internal Assessment differ between IB subjects?+

Substantially. The sciences require one investigation marked out of 24; mathematics requires the Exploration; economics requires commentaries on published articles; business management requires a research project on a real organisation; history requires a historical investigation; the arts require a process portfolio. They test different things and fail differently, but they share one feature: the ceiling is largely set by the decision made in the first week, whether that is a research question, a topic, an article or an organisation.

When is the right moment to get help with an Internal Assessment?+

At the choice, not at the write-up. The biggest determinant of the mark is the first-week decision: a research question that produces usable data, a topic whose mathematics is within the level, an article that supports a named concept, an organisation whose data can actually be obtained. One session then preserves the full ceiling. Three to five sessions during the write-up can only polish what the early decision made possible, and families almost always buy at the second point.

May a tutor help with the Extended Essay without breaking the rules?+

Yes, within a firm boundary. A tutor may teach question framing, scope, research method, referencing, academic register and reflective writing, and may read the student's own draft and say precisely where it fails against a criterion. A tutor may not write any part of it, restructure a draft on the student's behalf, supply a model to adapt, or produce the reflections. The school supervisor remains the authority on process, and the most valuable legitimate help is narrowing the question in DP1.

Why do strong writers underperform in Theory of Knowledge?+

Because fluency is not what is being marked. The marks sit in handling knowledge claims and counterclaims with specific, real examples, and in answering the prescribed title exactly as worded rather than the general topic it gestures towards. Students write well-structured opinion essays with examples attached, which reads persuasively and scores below a plainer essay that genuinely engages the title. One session on reading the title precisely often changes the approach completely.

Is Higher Level just more content than Standard Level?+

No. It adds content and raises the depth of reasoning demanded across components, so the student needs a different kind of practice rather than more of it. In the sciences the extra material often arrives late in DP2 alongside coursework deadlines and is half-learned as a result. In mathematics it adds a third paper of extended problem-solving that students have practised least. In essay subjects it raises the expectation of evaluation over exposition, which fluent describers find hard.

Can my child change a subject or a level partway through the Diploma?+

Often yes early in DP1, and progressively harder afterwards, with a deadline after which it is no longer possible. Ask the coordinator for that date specifically, in DP1, because it is the most useful piece of information nobody volunteers. Also check the intended university requirement before changing, since some programmes specify Higher Level in a particular subject and requirements vary by institution, country and intake year, including at the Dubai campuses of overseas universities.

How many points does my child need, and what else does the award require?+

The Diploma is scored out of 45, with six subjects and points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay combination, and there are published conditions beyond the total covering low grades and the core. We do not publish those thresholds, because ibo.org blocks automated checking and no IB figure in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Your school's coordinator holds the current set, and a website quoting precise conditions without a source should be treated carefully.

Which four questions should I put to the IB coordinator in DP1?+

What are the current award conditions, including the core requirement? What are the school's internal deadlines for every Internal Assessment and for the Extended Essay? Which session will the cohort sit, and what is the school's position on retakes? And what is the deadline after which a subject or level change is no longer possible? Those four answers shape where support should go and when, and they usually reveal that a points shortfall comes from one subject plus the core rather than from everywhere.

Does living in Internet City limit the IB tutors available to us?+

Only if you insist on someone travelling to you. There is no school inside the free zone, the nearest tuition centres are inland in Al Barsha, and the IB holds roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment split across three programmes and two levels, so the matched pool within any drive radius is small. Lessons here run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which widens the pool to everyone teaching in this time zone and removes distance from the decision.

How many subjects should we tutor at the same time?+

One, in most cases, chosen from marked work rather than from feeling. A student carrying six subjects plus the core has limited spare hours, and tutoring in three or four consumes the independent study time where most of the improvement actually has to happen. If marks are falling across the board, the likely cause is command terms, organisation or Higher Level over-commitment, and each of those is addressed better by one well-chosen intervention than by more hours.

Does the Diploma get recognised in the UAE automatically?+

Recognition for local purposes goes through the Ministry of Education equivalency process, which is separate from university admissions and is completed with the authority rather than with a school or a tutoring provider. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus A Level or AS Level evidence. No IB points threshold appears in the source we could read, so verify any figure on moe.gov.ae.

Ask about papers and mark schemes, not postcodes

If you are searching for an IB tutor near me from Dubai Internet City, the fastest improvement is to change the question. Instead of asking who is close, ask how many papers the subject has, what each is weighted, which Internal Assessment type applies and which command terms cost the most marks. A specialist answers all of that without pausing, and the answer is the same whether they live in Al Sufouh or Sharjah. A free trial lesson on a real past-paper question, marked against the official scheme during the hour, gives you a written diagnosis before anything is paid.
