IB Chemistry Tutor in Dubai Internet City

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai Internet City is usually asked for by a parent sitting at a desk in the free zone while their child is at school in Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or The Greens. This page is about the chemistry itself: the bonding model everything downstream depends on, the sign conventions in energetics, the organic mechanisms and the notation that quietly costs marks. Lessons run one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Bonding, energetics, equilibrium and the organic sequence taught at HL depth
  • Notation marked strictly: state symbols, charges and arrow origins all count
  • Mid-course arrivals audited topic by topic before any teaching begins
  • Investigation and Extended Essay support is coaching, never writing

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Internet City

Chemistry marks are decided by precision, and precision is teachable

Dubai Internet City is a workplace rather than a school district. It is a free zone in Al Sufouh housing the regional offices of large technology companies, bounded by Dubai Knowledge Park, Dubai Media City and the Red Line of the Metro, with residential supply in The Greens, The Views, Barsha Heights, Al Sufouh and the Marina towers. Most enquiries from this postcode come from a parent at work during the day, about a child at school somewhere else, which has a practical effect on how support gets arranged: the person organising it is not the person in the room at 18:00.

What those enquiries have in common is a question about precision rather than about content. The student understands the chemistry and the marks are not there. In marked Diploma scripts that gap almost always traces to one of four things: a bonding model held as categories rather than as explanations, an enthalpy sign applied by guesswork, an organic mechanism drawn with the arrow starting in the wrong place, or an equilibrium answer that recites a rule instead of arguing a position. None of those is a gap in knowledge, and all four are visible in a single marked paper.

The current chemistry guide organises content under Structure and Reactivity, three topics each, with HL material interleaved inside the topics rather than appended at the end. That structure rewards students who understand why a property follows from a model, and it punishes students who learned the properties as a list. It is also why a chemistry problem in the second year of the course frequently has its origin in the first: bonding explains reactivity, so a soft foundation in Structure 2 produces apparently random failures much later.

The scientific investigation carries twenty per cent of the grade under the current guide and is the component families most often ask for the wrong kind of help with. The line is simple and we keep it on every page. A tutor may teach how a research question is narrowed, how variables are controlled, how uncertainty is estimated, how an analysis is structured and how an evaluation argues. A tutor may read a draft the student wrote and reply with the questions an examiner would ask. A tutor may not write it, draft a section, rewrite the text or supply data. One provider in this market advertises completed internal assessments; the consequences of buying one land on the student.

IB Gram delivers chemistry support to Dubai families online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is an India-only service. For a household in this corridor the online format solves a specific problem rather than a general one: a parent who finishes work in the free zone at 18:00 does not need to be home to let a tutor in, and the session can start the moment the student is ready.

At a glance

  • Four recurring precision failures: bonding as categories, enthalpy signs, mechanism arrows, equilibrium reasoning
  • Structure and Reactivity each carry three topics, with HL material inside them rather than at the end
  • Notation errors are marked as wrong answers, not as untidy presentation
  • The investigation carries twenty per cent; confirm your cohort's exact split with the school
  • UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session; every lesson here runs online
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Enquiries from the Internet City corridor arrive at three levels, and the tech-sector relocation cycle means a significant share of them involve a student who joined their Dubai school part-way through a course.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Two years under Structure and Reactivity, assessed by written papers and the internally marked investigation. HL carries extra material inside each topic. The work splits between conceptual repair, quantitative method and notation discipline, and which of the three dominates should be settled by reading a marked script rather than by assumption.

Schools in Al Sufouh and Al Barsha run substantial HL Chemistry cohorts because of the medicine and engineering pipeline out of Dubai. What differs between them is the teaching order, so ask the department for its scheme of work. A tutor covering equilibrium while the class is three weeks into organic chemistry is competing with the school instead of supporting it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences before the Diploma

Criterion-based assessment that rewards investigative process and scientific communication. It does not systematically build the proportional reasoning the Diploma assumes, so a student can hold high MYP marks and still find the first term of Year 12 difficult. The bridge is arithmetic rather than conceptual.

In this corridor the MYP bridge request usually arrives in July from a family who has just been told the Diploma subject choices. Six short sessions on ratio, standard form, unit conversion and mole reasoning before September is the cheapest useful purchase in the subject, and it is almost never made.

TransferAges 14-18 · Years 10-13

Mid-course arrivals and curriculum transfers

Students arriving in Dubai from A Level, AP, CBSE or a national system part-way through a chemistry course. The work begins with an audit: which topics were covered, to what depth, and with which HL extensions. That audit prevents a term spent teaching material the student already holds, and it finds the two or three genuine gaps quickly.

The technology sector's posting cycles make this common in the Internet City and Media City catchment. Transfers rarely arrive uniformly behind; they arrive unevenly, strong in some topics and absent in others, which is why a general revision programme is the wrong purchase and a topic audit is the right one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry arrives with company from this postcode. These are the pairings we see most, with the reason each pairing creates or solves a problem.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and Reactivity, two written papers and the investigation. Precision in notation and reasoning is what separates a capable student from a high mark, more than coverage does.

Biology

HL and SL

The medicine pairing. Two investigations run in the same term with separate internal deadlines, and coordinating those two calendars prevents more damage than extra teaching does.

Physics

HL and SL

Shares the uncertainty and graph discipline chemistry needs in its data-based questions. One tutor seeing both scripts often spots a single shared cause.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Logarithms, exponentials and rate manipulation appear inside chemistry questions. A student weak in both usually has one problem, not two.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Compatible with chemistry provided the algebraic fluency gap is closed deliberately rather than assumed away in the first term.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A common third choice in this corridor given the local employment base. Modelling and systematic reasoning transfer into chemistry problem-solving more than students expect.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Chemistry supplies strong material on models, measurement and the limits of evidence. Support here is structural: claim, counterclaim, and one real example used well.

Extended Essay in Chemistry

Core

A supervised research piece needing a narrow, answerable question. A tutor helps the student plan, read and revise their own drafts and writes none of it.

IGCSE Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

The usual pre-Diploma route in British-curriculum schools nearby. Moles, concentration and yield built here are what the Diploma assumes without re-teaching.

A Level Chemistry

AS and A2

Taken instead of the Diploma in several schools in this catchment. The content overlap is large; the assessment structure and practical endorsement arrangements are not.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of chemistry support, all delivered one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time, chosen by what a marked script says rather than by preference.

Conceptual repair from the bonding model up

For the student whose errors look random and are not. Work starts at Structure 2 and rebuilds the chain from bonding to structure to property to reactivity, so that a prediction can be reasoned rather than recalled. It is slower than topic revision and it is the only thing that fixes a student who keeps failing unfamiliar questions on familiar material.

  • Each property traced back to the model that explains it
  • Predictions made by the student before any answer is given
  • HL extensions listed on their own lines in the coverage map
  • Unfamiliar questions used deliberately, not avoided

Notation and mechanism drills

Short, repetitive and highly effective. State symbols, ionic charges, balanced equations, curly-arrow origins and organic structures drawn unambiguously. These carry marks that students read as presentation, and because the fix is mechanical it survives examination pressure better than conceptual work does.

  • Arrow origins drawn from the electron pair, every time
  • Equations checked for balance and state symbols as a habit
  • Organic structures drawn so an examiner cannot misread them
  • Five minutes of drill at the start of every session

Audit and rebuild for mid-course arrivals

For students joining a Dubai school part-way through the course. One session establishes what was covered at the previous school, topic by topic and including HL material, against the current department's scheme of work. The result is a short list of real gaps rather than a vague sense of being behind.

  • Topic-by-topic audit against the specification, not against a textbook
  • Comparison with the new school's teaching order
  • A written gap list the family and the school can both read
  • Teaching starts only after the audit, never before

Chemistry tutors here have taught the Diploma course to examination and marked against the published criteria. They teach from the student's own script and from the specification rather than from a revision guide, because in chemistry an answer that is nearly right is usually wrong for a reason the student can be shown.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Internet City

01

What a Diploma chemistry question is actually asking for

  • The verb sets both content and length; read it before the chemistry
  • Match the number of scoring points to the mark allocation
  • Check the quantity requested: enthalpy change, not enthalpy
  • Units and precision are instructions, not suggestions
  • Work from the student's own script with the scheme open beside it

Chemistry papers are written in a controlled vocabulary and marked literally. The verb at the front of the question sets both the content and the length of the answer that will score. State wants a fact or a value with units and nothing else. Outline wants the key points briefly. Explain wants a chain of reasoning in which each link earns a mark. Deduce wants a conclusion visibly drawn from given information. Determine wants working and then a value with units. Describe wants an account without the reasoning, and compare wants both sides addressed within each point of comparison.

Students lose marks in both directions. Writing an explanation for a question that asked for a statement earns nothing extra and costs minutes that the back of the paper needed. Writing a statement where an explanation was wanted earns nothing at all. Across a full paper a capable student can surrender a noticeable number of marks without a single gap in chemistry, which is the most frustrating way to lose a grade and the easiest to repair. Three or four sessions with the mark scheme open is usually enough to change the habit permanently.

The second layer is the quantity actually requested. A question asking for a change in enthalpy and receiving an enthalpy is wrong. A question asking for a concentration and receiving a number of moles is wrong. A question specifying units, or a precision, or a particular form of an answer, means it. These are reading errors rather than chemistry errors, and the only reliable fix is deliberate practice at reading the stem twice before the pen moves.

The practical method is narrow. Take the student's own answers, set the published mark scheme beside them, and identify what the scheme awarded that the answer did not supply. Within a few sessions a student can predict the required answer shape from the verb and the mark allocation alone, which transfers to every question in every paper and to the other sciences as well.

02

Bonding and structure: the model everything downstream depends on

Most apparently random chemistry failures in the second year of the Diploma trace back to bonding. A student who learned bonding as a set of categories, with properties attached to each as a list, can answer any question that names the category. The same student fails when a question describes a substance and expects the bonding to be inferred, or when a property has to be predicted for something unfamiliar. That is not a memory problem. It is a model problem, and it is repaired by working in the other direction: from structure to property, repeatedly, until the reasoning is automatic.

The chain to establish is short. What particles are present, what forces act between them, how strong those forces are relative to thermal energy, and therefore what the melting point, conductivity, solubility and hardness should look like. A student who can run that chain forwards can answer questions nobody has seen before. A student who cannot is dependent on the question being familiar, which is exactly what examination questions are designed not to be.

The table sets out the main bonding and structure types with the properties that follow and the error we see most often for each. It is not a revision list to memorise; it is a check on whether the reasoning works. The useful exercise with a student is to cover the property column, describe a substance, and ask them to produce the properties with the reason attached. Where they can only recall, the model is not there yet.

HL material deserves a specific note. Because the guide interleaves HL content inside each topic, HL bonding material tends to be taught at the end of the topic and then not revisited. It is the single most frequently under-rehearsed HL content we encounter, and the fix is organisational rather than intellectual: list it separately in the revision plan so it cannot be skipped by default.

STRUCTURE TYPES, THE PROPERTIES THAT FOLLOW, AND THE USUAL ERROR
Structure typeParticles and forces presentProperties that followThe error students make

03

Energetics: sign conventions, and why they cost so many marks

  • State whose energy is being described before writing any sign
  • A warming solution means a negative enthalpy change for the reaction
  • Calorimetry uses the mass of the solution, not of the reacting substance
  • Estimate the expected magnitude before calculating
  • HL reasoning about driving forces assumes the first-year foundation is sound

Energetics is where chemistry stops forgiving carelessness. The sign of an enthalpy change is not a decoration; it is the answer. A negative value means energy was released to the surroundings and a positive value means energy was absorbed from them, and a student who determines the magnitude correctly and attaches the wrong sign has produced a wrong answer that looks almost right. Examiners apply this strictly, and they are correct to, because the sign is the chemistry.

The recurring confusion is about perspective. A reaction that releases energy warms its surroundings, so the temperature of the solution rises while the enthalpy change of the reaction is negative. Students who have memorised rise means positive get this wrong every time, and no amount of additional content teaching helps because the error is in the frame rather than in the facts. The repair is to insist, in every calculation, that the student states whose energy is being described before writing a sign.

The second recurring issue is which mass is used in a calorimetry calculation. The mass of solution absorbing the energy, not the mass of the substance reacting, and a student who uses the wrong one produces an answer out by an order of magnitude without noticing. A habit of estimating the expected size of an answer before calculating catches this, and estimating is a skill worth teaching in its own right because it catches many other errors too.

Beyond the arithmetic, energetics is where the reasoning about spontaneity and driving forces begins, and at HL that reasoning becomes substantial. Students who treated the calculations as arithmetic exercises in the first year arrive at this material without the conceptual foundation it assumes, which is another instance of the same pattern: a second-year difficulty with a first-year cause.

04

The organic sequence: functional groups, mechanisms and the arrow that starts in the wrong place

Organic chemistry is where notation marks concentrate. A mechanism is a diagram that makes a claim, and the claim is made by where the arrow starts. An arrow drawn from an atom rather than from the electron pair it actually comes from is a different and wrong claim, and it is marked as such. Students find this harsh. It is also entirely mechanical to fix, which makes it one of the better returns available in the subject: a drill at the start of each session for a few weeks, and the habit holds.

The second organic issue is sequence rather than notation. Functional group chemistry is a map of what converts into what, under what conditions, and students who learn individual reactions in isolation cannot answer a question that asks for a two-step route. Building the map explicitly, as a diagram the student draws from memory rather than reads, is the difference between answering a familiar reaction question and answering a synthesis question. The map is small enough to be drawn from memory, and students who can do that find the whole topic shrinks.

The third is structural drawing. An organic structure drawn ambiguously, with a bond that could be read two ways or a group positioned unclearly, is marked on what the examiner can actually see. Teaching a student to draw deliberately slowly, with enough space, is unglamorous and it recovers marks. The same applies to naming: systematic names follow rules, and a student who guesses rather than applies them loses marks on questions they understood.

The table below maps the functional groups to the reaction types and the specific notation trap for each. Use it as a diagnostic rather than a revision list: a student who recognises their own recurring error in the right-hand column has found the next fortnight of work.

FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, REACTION TYPES AND THE NOTATION TRAP

05

Equilibrium, acids and bases: arguing a position rather than reciting a rule

  • Three sentences, fixed order: the change, the direction, the reason
  • Logarithmic fluency is a maths problem with a chemistry symptom
  • Buffer answers must name the species doing the work
  • Write the reasoning chain; a compressed conclusion scores less
  • Unfamiliar conditions are the test, so practise on unfamiliar questions

Equilibrium questions ask for an argument and most students supply a slogan. A change in conditions shifts a position, and a scoring answer names the change, states the direction of the shift, and explains why that direction follows. Students who have memorised the principle can usually state the direction and cannot explain it, which earns part of the mark and leaves the rest. The repair is to require three sentences in a fixed order every time, until the structure survives without prompting.

Acids and bases are where the arithmetic and the reasoning meet, and where students who are shaky on logarithms suffer twice. A concentration becomes a pH through a logarithmic relationship, and a student without fluency in logarithms is working two problems at once under examination pressure. This is one of the clearest cases where a chemistry difficulty has a mathematical cause, and where the honest recommendation is a short block of maths work rather than more chemistry teaching.

At HL the material extends into buffer behaviour and the reasoning about weak acids and bases, and here the precision demands rise again. A buffer explanation that says the buffer resists change has said nothing; one that identifies which species consumes added acid and which consumes added base has answered the question. We teach these as named arguments with named participants, because that is what the mark scheme is looking for.

The thread running through this section and the previous three is the same. Chemistry at Diploma level rewards reasoning that can be followed on paper. The student who writes the chain down scores; the student who knows it and compresses it into a conclusion does not. Most of what a chemistry tutor usefully does is make the chain visible, repeatedly, until writing it out is the student's default rather than an instruction they have to remember.

06

Arriving mid-course: chemistry for students who changed school or system

The free zones in this part of Dubai have a relocation rhythm, and the consequence for chemistry is a steady stream of students joining a Diploma course part-way through from A Level, AP, CBSE or a national curriculum. These students are rarely uniformly behind. They arrive unevenly: ahead on some topics, absent on others, and frequently strong in calculation and weak in the reasoning the Diploma rewards, or the reverse. A general revision programme is the wrong purchase for them and it is what they are usually sold.

The right first step is an audit. One session, working through the specification topic by topic, establishing what was covered, to what depth, and whether the HL extensions were included. That produces a short written list of real gaps rather than an impression of being behind, and it typically reveals three or four items rather than a syllabus. It also prevents weeks of teaching material the student already holds, which is the most common waste in this situation.

The second step is comparing that list against the new school's teaching order, because what matters is not only what is missing but when the class will need it. A gap in a topic the department covered last term is urgent. A gap in a topic the department has not reached is something to time deliberately. That comparison requires the scheme of work, which is a routine request to a head of department and changes the quality of the plan substantially.

The table maps the common prior systems onto what usually transfers and what usually does not. It is a starting hypothesis for the audit rather than a conclusion, because individual schools vary far more than curricula do. Students arriving from any system should be assessed on their own script rather than on their previous curriculum's reputation.

A free-zone household: the Metro, the working day and when sessions fit

  • Written session notes after every lesson, for the parent who was at work
  • A fixed weekly slot that never needs reconfirming
  • Sessions from 17:30 for students returning from Al Barsha or the Marina
  • Data booklet open, own calculator, headphones, camera on the page
  • Ramadan timetable agreed in advance, not improvised week by week

The scheduling problem in this corridor is different from a residential neighbourhood's. Internet City is where the parent is, and the student is in Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, The Greens or the Marina. That means the person arranging the tutoring is often unavailable at the hour it happens, which changes what the arrangement has to provide: written session notes rather than a doorstep conversation, a fixed slot that does not need confirming each week, and a clear record of what was covered.

The Red Line of the Metro serves this district and the tram runs through the Marina side, which matters less for tutoring than it does for school runs, but it shapes the afternoon. Students travelling back from Al Barsha or Jumeirah reach home across the same hours the free zone empties, and a session starting before 17:30 competes with that. For Marina and JBR students the exit is slower still. Online removes the journey entirely, which is the single largest reason blocks here complete rather than fragment.

What the student needs at their end is small: a hard surface, squared paper for graph work, their own calculator rather than a phone, the data booklet open, and headphones so an apartment with other people in it is not part of the session. The camera is angled at the page, because watching the working appear is the whole diagnostic method. For a parent who cannot be present, the recording and the written note are what substitute for having been in the room.

Ramadan shifts the pattern for a few weeks and Dubai schools adjust hours. We agree the revised timetable before the month starts, usually fewer and shorter sessions moved to the late morning or the post-Iftar window, with lighter work set between them. Where a parent's own working hours change during the month, the session notes matter more than usual, and we write them accordingly.

08

The investigation, the Extended Essay, and the line we do not cross

  • We coach design, uncertainty treatment, structure and evaluation argument
  • We never write, draft, rewrite or supply work or data
  • Feedback arrives as examiner questions, not as improved sentences
  • A research question that cannot be measured is the usual fatal flaw
  • The school's internal deadlines govern the plan, not the external window

Two pieces of assessed chemistry writing are produced under supervision: the scientific investigation and, for students who choose the subject, the Extended Essay. Both are the student's own work and both attract offers of help that cross a line. We state the line on every page because stating it is one of the few reliable ways a parent can tell providers apart in this market.

A tutor may teach how a research question is narrowed until it is answerable with available equipment and time. A tutor may teach how variables are identified and controlled, how uncertainty is estimated and propagated, how data is presented, how an analysis is structured, and how an evaluation identifies which limitation actually mattered rather than listing apologies. A tutor may read a draft the student wrote and respond with the questions an examiner would ask next. All of that is teaching.

A tutor may not write any part of the work, draft a section, rewrite the student's sentences into better ones, supply data, or provide a previous student's work as a template. One provider in this market advertises completed internal assessments at a published price. Buying that is an academic-malpractice trigger under the International Baccalaureate's own rules, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the seller. We do not do it and we will not be asked twice.

Practically, the most common cause of a weak investigation is not weak writing but a research question that cannot be answered with school apparatus in the time available. The second is a data set too thin for the analysis attempted. Both are planning failures, both are cheap to prevent and expensive to rescue, and both are addressed before any data is collected. The school's internal deadlines are the dates the plan is built around, so we ask for them in writing at the start.

Where we tutor

The residential belt around Dubai Internet City

Internet City is where parents work; the students live and study around it. These are the neighbourhoods and school corridors that generate chemistry enquiries from this free zone.

Al Sufouh

The free zone's immediate surroundings, with established secondary provision running Diploma sciences. Short journeys and a predictable afternoon make earlier session slots realistic here.

The Greens and The Views

Mid-rise residential immediately inland, popular with families working in the free zones. Study space is usually an apartment table, so headphones and a hard surface belong in the plan.

Barsha Heights

Formerly Tecom and directly adjacent. Dense apartment living with a short school run, which makes consistent weekly slots easier to hold than in the Marina towers.

Dubai Marina and JBR

The largest residential concentration within reach, and the slowest afternoon exit. Chemistry sessions for Marina students settle after 17:30 almost without exception.

Al Barsha

Where much of the IB provision in this part of Dubai sits. HL Chemistry enquiries from the free zone corridor most often involve a school in this cluster.

Jumeirah Lake Towers

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, connected by the Metro. Families here frequently work in Internet City or Media City, and the commute shapes which evenings a parent can supervise.

Dubai Knowledge Park and Media City

The neighbouring free zones, functionally one district with Internet City. Useful context because the household rhythm is set by the parent's working day rather than by the school's.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Internet City

Al Sufouh and the Knowledge Park corridor

The schools closest to the free zone, several with long-established sixth forms running Diploma or A Level sciences. Chemistry requests from this cluster are usually about depth and precision rather than about catching up.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked script and the level

A recent marked paper tells us more in twenty minutes than a description does in a week. We are looking for which of four things is costing the marks: a bonding model that is not there, enthalpy sign errors, mechanism notation, or command-term length. Those four lead to four different plans and three of them are short.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on real questions

The first session is free and runs on past-paper questions drawn from your child's own weak area rather than on a conversation about services. The tutor watches the working appear, which is where precision failures show themselves. A short written note follows, naming what is wrong and in what order to fix it, and it is yours regardless.

  3. 03

Ask the department for the scheme of work

The teaching order matters more than the guide's sequence, because a tutor working out of step with the class is competing rather than supporting. For a mid-course arrival this document is what turns an audit into a timetable, since it shows which gaps are urgent and which can be timed deliberately.

  4. 04

Fix a slot and accept written notes instead of doorsteps

One weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, set after the return from school rather than inside it. Because the parent in this corridor is often at work when the session runs, every lesson produces a written note of what was covered and what was set, and sessions are recorded. That record replaces the conversation a home visit would have provided.

  5. 05

Re-mark at week four and change course if needed

A second paper is sat and marked at week four and compared with the first. If the error pattern has not moved, we change approach or tutor rather than defending either. If the evidence says the gap is maths rather than chemistry, we say that too, because a term of chemistry teaching will not fix a logarithm problem.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Precision taught as a skill, not as a reminder

Notation drills, sign-convention routines and command-term discipline are built into the start of every session rather than mentioned once. These are the marks a capable chemistry student is actually losing, and because the fixes are mechanical they hold under examination conditions.

The bonding model rebuilt where it is missing

Apparently random second-year failures usually trace to a bonding model held as categories. We rebuild the chain from particles and forces to properties, and test it on unfamiliar substances rather than familiar ones, which is what examination questions are designed to do.

Mid-course arrivals audited before anything is taught

Relocation into this corridor is common and transfers arrive unevenly rather than uniformly behind. One audit session produces a short written gap list, which is cheaper and more accurate than a general revision programme sold on the assumption of broad weakness.

Built for a parent who is at work

Written notes after every session, recordings, a fixed slot that never needs reconfirming, and an explicit record of work set. The person organising tutoring in this district is usually not the person at home at 18:00, and the arrangement is designed around that.

A stated limit on assessed work

We coach the investigation and the Extended Essay and we write neither. In a market where completed internal assessments are advertised at a price, publishing the limit is more useful to a parent than any claim about quality.

No borrowed authority

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education, and has no UAE premises. Where a page names a regulator it explains what that body does and links its own site.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Internet City: your questions answered

What does an IB chemistry tutor cost for a family working in Dubai Internet City?+

Published Dubai market rates put a qualified subject tutor working online at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB specialists quoted from about AED 200 to 450 or more, and one premium provider publishing AED 650. Monthly estimates from the Bestimate Dubai rate table run about AED 600-1,200 for mid-band weekly support and AED 1,000-2,000 or more in an examination year. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180-500 an hour because the journey is inside the fee. Those are market figures with their sources attached rather than our price list; we quote after the free trial lesson.

Can a tutor visit our home if we live near the free zone?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family address is a service we offer only in India. Chemistry sessions here are delivered one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. In this district that suits the household rather than inconveniencing it: the parent organising the tutoring is often still at work when the session runs, so a fixed slot, written session notes and a recording are more useful than a doorbell. Nothing is lost to traffic on the way in or the way out either.

Why do my child's chemistry errors look random across different topics?+

Usually because the bonding model is held as categories rather than as explanations. A student who learned bonding types with their properties attached as lists can answer any question that names the type, and fails whenever a substance is described and the bonding has to be inferred. The failures then appear scattered across topics because the cause is upstream of all of them. The repair runs in the other direction: from particles and forces to properties, tested on unfamiliar substances, until the chain is automatic. It takes a few weeks and it fixes a lot at once.

My child gets the right enthalpy number and the wrong sign. How is that fixed?+

By insisting that they state whose energy is being described before writing anything. A reaction releasing energy warms the surrounding solution, so the temperature rises while the enthalpy change of the reaction is negative. Students who memorised rise means positive get this wrong every time, and extra content teaching does nothing because the error is in the frame rather than in the facts. We also build the habit of estimating the expected magnitude first, which catches the related error of using the mass of the reacting substance instead of the mass of the solution.

How strictly are organic mechanism arrows marked?+

Strictly, because the arrow is the claim. An arrow must start from the electron pair that actually moves, so one drawn from a carbon atom rather than from a double bond, or from a nucleophile without its lone pair shown, is making a different and incorrect statement. Examiners mark what the diagram says. Students find this harsh and it is also entirely mechanical to fix: a short drill at the start of each session for a few weeks, with the student redrawing their own mechanisms, and the habit holds. It is one of the better returns available in the subject.

Can a tutor help with the chemistry Extended Essay?+

Within clear limits, yes. A tutor can teach your child how to narrow a research question until it is answerable, how to read and evaluate sources, how to structure an argument, how to present data and how to handle a critical evaluation. A tutor can read a draft your child wrote and respond with the questions a supervisor or examiner would ask next. A tutor cannot write any part of it, draft a section, rewrite sentences into better ones or supply data. The essay is supervised in school, and the supervisor is the authority on what support is permitted in your child's case.

Our family relocated to Dubai mid-course. Where do you start?+

With an audit rather than with teaching. One session goes through the specification topic by topic, establishing what the previous school covered, to what depth, and whether HL extensions were included, then compares that with the new department's scheme of work. Transfers almost never arrive uniformly behind; they arrive unevenly, and the audit usually produces three or four real gaps rather than a syllabus. That is a far cheaper and more accurate starting point than a general revision programme, which is what students in this situation are most often sold.

Is a chemistry problem sometimes actually a maths problem?+

Often, and acids and bases is the clearest case. Converting a concentration to a pH requires logarithmic fluency, and a student without it is solving two problems at once under time pressure. Rate questions, equilibrium constants and energetics all sit on similar ground. When a marked script shows the chemistry reasoning intact and the arithmetic collapsing, the honest recommendation is a short block of maths work rather than more chemistry teaching. We say so when we see it, because selling chemistry sessions to fix a logarithm gap wastes a term.

How much extra content does HL Chemistry carry over SL?+

The HL course covers the same six topics under Structure and Reactivity with additional material inside each, so the difference is depth and rehearsal rather than a separate syllabus. The practical consequence is scheduling: HL content sits at the end of a topic and the class usually moves on before it is practised, which is why HL extensions are the most frequently under-rehearsed material we meet. A revision plan that lists HL items on their own lines, and revisits them deliberately, removes most of the problem without any extra teaching.

Which schools near Dubai Internet City teach Diploma Chemistry?+

The provision closest to the free zone sits in Al Sufouh and Al Barsha, with a mix of full IB continuum schools and British-curriculum schools offering the Diploma or A Level at sixth form. Rather than choose by reputation, ask the school two things: how many sets run HL Chemistry, and what the department's scheme of work looks like across the two years. The first tells you whether your child will have peers working on the same HL material; the second tells any tutor how to sequence support. We name schools on this page as context only and claim no relationship with any of them.

What does a session actually look like for a student in The Greens or Barsha Heights?+

The student sits at a hard surface with squared paper, their own calculator, the data booklet open and headphones on, with the camera angled at the page rather than the face. The tutor watches the working appear, which is where precision errors become visible as they happen. Mechanisms are drawn live on a shared whiteboard and can be rebuilt as many times as needed. Sessions are recorded, so an organic mechanism can be re-watched in the final term. A written note follows each session, which matters because the parent is often still at work.

How do you avoid teaching the same thing the school is teaching badly?+

By working from the department's scheme of work rather than from the guide's sequence. If the class is three weeks into the organic sequence, we support that, and we do not open equilibrium because it happens to be next in a textbook. Where the school's coverage of a topic has genuinely left a gap, we teach it from the model up rather than repeating the same explanation louder. The written coverage map we keep is the document that makes this visible, and parents can read it without needing to know any chemistry.

Which session do UAE Diploma students sit, and how should we plan around it?+

UAE candidates sit the May session. We do not publish specific IB examination or results dates on these pages, because the International Baccalaureate's own site is the authoritative source and should be checked directly or through the school's IB coordinator. For planning, the dates that shape a student's term are usually internal: the school's own deadlines for the investigation and the Extended Essay, which generally fall well before anything external. Build the plan around those, keep the heaviest coursework weeks clear of the mock series, and confirm every external date with the school.

What if the HL chemistry tutor we need is not free this term?+

We tell you rather than substituting a generalist. SL and mainstream HL matching is usually quick. Narrower requests, such as a specific HL extension or heavy mechanism work close to the papers, draw on a smaller group, and the honest options are a different time, a short wait for the right person, or a script-marking clinic in the meantime so the weeks still produce something. We also tell you where a tutor is based before you book. Filling a specialist slot with whoever is available is how families pay to be told what they already knew.

Send one marked paper and we will name the actual problem

Chemistry grades at Diploma level are decided by four kinds of precision: the bonding model, the sign conventions, the mechanism notation and the command terms. Which of the four is costing your child marks is visible in one marked script, and naming it correctly is worth more than any number of general revision sessions. Send us a recent paper with the marks on it, the level, and the school, and we will tell you honestly which of the four it is and roughly how long it takes to fix. The trial lesson is free and runs on real questions. Everything is delivered one-to-one, online, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with written notes for the parent who is still in the office.
