IB Tutor near me in Al Qusais

Searching for an IB tutor near me in Al Qusais gives you a map pin, which is the one thing that does not predict a grade. What predicts a grade is whether the tutor has taught your child's subject at your child's level and knows which paper the marks are leaking from. IB Gram matches on that, then teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the Al Qusais school run.

  • Matched by subject and assessment component, not by map pin
  • Session slots set against real school finish times
  • Diploma calendar planned backwards from the May session

IB & IGCSE in Al Qusais

Why a "near me" search is the wrong tool for this job

Google reads "near me" as a request for proximity and answers it with whatever business listings sit closest to your device. In Al Qusais that returns tuition centres along Damascus Street, individual tutors with a mobile number and a subject list that runs from Year 2 to A Level, and agency pages that mention Al Qusais in a drop-down menu. The ranking signal is distance and listing quality. It is not subject expertise, and nothing in the result tells you which of those options has ever taught a Higher Level option paper.

The IB Diploma is unusually unforgiving about this. Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, each with an internal assessment moderated by the IB, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. The core contributes up to three points of the 45. Each subject has its own command terms, its own paper structure and its own internal assessment criteria, written as lettered strands with mark allocations. A tutor who cannot name those strands for your child's subject is not going to move the mark on them.

Where the Diploma differs from an examined linear course is in timing. A large part of the grade is fixed during the two years rather than in the final fortnight. Internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay process and the TOK exhibition and essay all fall across DP1 and DP2 on the school's internal calendar. A family that starts looking for help in the spring of DP2 is shopping after the coursework marks have already been set, which is why this page spends more space on the calendar than on the subjects.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, which is what allows the match to be made on subject and level instead of on driving distance from Al Qusais. The practical consequence for a parent here is that the pool stops being whoever is free in north-east Dubai and becomes whoever is free at 17:30.

The rest of this page is built for someone who has typed that search and wants something useful back. It counts the two Diploma years backwards from the May session, sets out which authority regulates your child's school and why that may not be your own emirate, explains what a tutor can legitimately do with the core, maps school finish times onto workable session slots for this district, and describes what a trial lesson should have told you within forty minutes. It also says plainly which exam session your child is actually entered for, because a plan counted back from the wrong window wastes a term, and the only dates worth working from are the ones your school's IB coordinator has issued in writing.

At a glance

  • Proximity results rank on distance and listing quality, not expertise
  • Much of a Diploma grade is fixed during DP1 and DP2, not at the end
  • Internal assessment criteria are lettered strands with published mark allocations
  • Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, never at a UAE address
  • Session timing is set against actual school finish and bus routes
  • IB exam and results dates should be confirmed with your school's coordinator
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The three IB programmes run by Dubai schools need different kinds of help. The shorthand: inquiry habits in primary, criteria in the middle years, and components in the Diploma.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12 to 13

Diploma Programme

Assessment is split between externally marked papers and an internally marked component in every subject, moderated by the IB. Grades run 1 to 7 per subject, with up to three further points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combined. Minimum requirements apply across the whole diploma, not subject by subject, which is why one weak Higher Level subject can be more dangerous than it looks.

Dubai schools sit the May session, so the internal calendar matters more than the external one for an Al Qusais family. By February of DP2 the coursework marks are largely fixed and the remaining work is paper technique, which is a different and cheaper kind of tutoring than the design work needed a year earlier.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7 to 11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against criteria A to D in each subject group, with achievement levels converted to a 1 to 8 grade. There is no content syllabus to revise in the familiar sense, which is why strong students sometimes stall: they know the material and lose marks against a criterion strand they have never had explained to them.

Schools serving Al Qusais vary in how long they run MYP. Some carry it to Year 11 with eAssessment, others switch to IGCSE after Year 9. Those two paths need completely different Year 9 preparation, so the first thing worth checking is which one your child's school takes.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry with no external examination, closing with the Year 6 exhibition. Reporting is narrative rather than numerical, which makes it hard for parents to judge whether a child is behind in arithmetic or reading until a transition exposes it.

For families in this part of Dubai, the common trigger is a move into a PYP school from a school with weekly tests and ranked positions. The child is not weaker; the feedback has gone quiet. A short, specific arithmetic and reading check is usually all that is needed to find out.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Diploma subjects below are the ones Dubai students most often need help with outside maths and the physical sciences. Each note names the component where marks are most reliably recovered.

Biology

HL and SL

Built around unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and continuity. The internal assessment is where Standard Level students gain the most ground, because the research design criterion rewards a narrow controlled question and most students submit one that is far too broad to analyse.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies have to be used as evidence, not recited. Students lose marks by describing an experiment in detail and never linking it to the question's demand. The Higher Level extensions and the approaches to research section reward precise terminology about sampling and ethics.

Geography

HL and SL

Case-study recall is necessary and not sufficient; the marks sit in applying a named place to a specific process. The fieldwork internal assessment stands or falls on whether the method generated data that can actually be analysed statistically.

History

HL and SL

Paper 1 is a source-based assessment with a fixed structure that can be drilled, which makes it the fastest component to improve. The historical investigation needs a question narrow enough to answer in 2,200 words and a genuine evaluation of two sources.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paper 1 rewards precise definitions on systems and data structures. The solution development internal assessment fails most often on documentation rather than code: students build something that works and lose marks on criteria about planning and testing evidence.

Business Management

HL and SL

The pre-released case study for Paper 1 is a known quantity and should be worked systematically from the term it is released. Application marks need the actual business named in the answer, which is the single most common omission in this subject.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A technology-assumed course where the examiner wants interpretation. A correct chi-squared value with no statement about the hypothesis earns partial credit. Graph theory at Higher Level and the normal distribution at Standard are the usual weak points.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

An interdisciplinary course that can satisfy two group requirements. Students underestimate the systems vocabulary and the value judgements strand, both of which carry marks that pure content revision never touches.

Spanish and French ab initio

SL

Designed for near beginners and assessed across prescribed themes with writing, listening, reading and an individual oral. Progress is highly responsive to weekly spoken practice, which is the one thing a crowded Diploma timetable rarely leaves room for.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families in this district use tutoring across the two Diploma years. All are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

DP1 foundation work

The year most families skip and most grades are decided in. Sessions build the algebra, analytical writing or data handling the Higher Level subjects will assume, and set up the internal assessment while there is still time to choose a good question rather than rescue a bad one.

  • One or two subjects, sixty to ninety minutes, one fixed evening
  • Internal assessment question narrowed before the school's draft deadline
  • Progress checked against the school's own reporting cycle

Component repair in DP2

Narrow work on the specific paper that is losing marks, identified from mock scripts rather than from a general sense of weakness. Often a six to eight week block rather than an open-ended commitment, which is cheaper and tends to work better.

  • Mock scripts read component by component before any teaching
  • Timed questions marked between sessions, with an error log
  • Finishes when the component is fixed rather than at the end of term

Core support: EE, TOK and reflection

The three points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are the cheapest points on the diploma and the least tutored. Sessions teach the assessment criteria, interrogate the research question and mark drafts against the published descriptors. The student writes every word.

  • Research question tested against the word limit before drafting
  • TOK essay argued against the prescribed title, not around it
  • Draft feedback given as a commentary, never as replacement text

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Qusais

01

What a proximity search actually ranks, and what it leaves out

  • Distance and review count are the main local ranking signals
  • Broad subject lists are an enquiry-volume strategy, not a credential
  • Ask about criteria, weightings and command terms, not years of experience
  • Delivery here is online one-to-one, so the pool is not limited by distance

A local search result is assembled from business listings, categories, reviews and distance from the device. Those are reasonable signals for a dentist. For Diploma tutoring they are close to useless, because none of them encodes the only fact that matters: has this person taught this subject at this level and seen this internal assessment marked.

The listings themselves make it worse. An individual tutor advertising in Al Qusais typically lists a dozen subjects across ten year groups, because a narrow advert gets fewer calls. A tuition centre lists curricula rather than syllabuses. Neither is dishonest, but both are optimised for enquiry volume rather than for match quality, and the parent is left guessing.

There is a second-order problem specific to the IB. Because the Diploma cohort is small relative to the British and Indian curriculum cohorts in this part of Dubai, the tutors who advertise locally are mostly serving those larger markets. Their IB experience is often genuine but thin: one or two students, one subject, one level. That is enough to be credible on a phone call and not enough to be useful on a Higher Level Paper 3.

The replacement test is simple and takes a few minutes on the phone. Ask what the internal assessment in that subject is marked against, by criterion. Ask what each paper is worth. Ask which topic the student most recently lost marks on and what the command term in that question was asking for. Somebody who teaches the subject regularly answers immediately; somebody who does not changes the subject to motivation and rapport.

02

The two Diploma years counted backwards

Dubai IB schools sit the May session. Work backwards from there and the shape of the two years becomes obvious, and so does the point at which tutoring stops being able to change certain marks. Specific IB examination and results dates are set by the IB and should be confirmed with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org; they are deliberately not restated here, because a date a parent plans around has to come from the source that sets it.

What can be planned confidently is the internal calendar, because the school sets it and tells you. Subject choices are fixed early in DP1. Internal assessment proposals follow in the second half of DP1 for most subjects, with first drafts in the autumn of DP2 and final submissions through the winter. The Extended Essay runs on its own track with a supervisor and reflection sessions. TOK has an exhibition and an essay, each with its own deadline.

The expensive misunderstanding is treating all of this as one deadline in May. By the time a student sits the papers, a fifth to a quarter of each subject grade is already banked in the internal assessment, and up to three diploma points have been settled by the Extended Essay and TOK. A family starting support in March of DP2 can still improve the examined papers, which is worth doing, but the other half of the grade is closed.

The practical version for an Al Qusais family is to ask the school for its internal deadline calendar in September of DP1, and to book tutoring against that rather than against the exam. The table below is the generic shape of those milestones with the question each one raises; fill in your own school's dates beside it.

Which authority regulates your child's school, and why it may not be your emirate

Families along the Dubai-Sharjah corridor ask this constantly, and the answer is that the regulator follows the school, not the home address. A child living in Al Nahda on the Sharjah side who attends a school in Al Garhoud is at a KHDA-regulated school. A child living in Al Qusais who attends a school across the boundary is at a school answering to the Sharjah Private Education Authority.

The full map is worth knowing because it is almost entirely absent from competing pages. Dubai private schools fall to KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall to ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

The powers are not identical. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so curriculum approval sits with the emirate regulator and not only inspection. At federal level, private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That federal baseline is what every emirate's mandatory-subject requirement is built on.

For a tutoring decision this matters in two concrete ways. Inspection reports are published by the relevant authority, so you read KHDA for a Dubai school and SPEA for a Sharjah one, and the subject-level commentary in those reports often tells you more than the headline band. And term calendars can differ between emirates, which in a two-school household is the practical reason a shared tutoring slot keeps collapsing in the spring.

The core: three points almost nobody tutors

The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together contribute up to three points to the 45-point diploma total. Three points is the difference between a conditional offer and a rejection at plenty of universities, and it is available for work that is not examined under time pressure. It is also, in this market, barely tutored at all, because it is harder to sell than a subject and harder to explain than a paper.

The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent piece in a subject the student is studying, supervised by a school teacher with formal reflection sessions. Most of the marks that go missing are lost at the start, in a research question that is either unanswerable in the word count or answerable in a paragraph. A tutor's most valuable hour here is spent long before drafting, interrogating the question until it is both narrow and genuinely open.

Theory of Knowledge has an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. The common failure is writing about the topic rather than arguing the title, using real-life situations as decoration instead of as evidence. This is teachable in a way that feels unfamiliar to students who have spent five years being rewarded for content recall, and it responds quickly to being made to defend a claim out loud.

The boundary is firm and worth stating. A tutor does not write the Extended Essay, does not write the TOK essay, and does not supply paragraphs for a student to adapt. The tutor teaches the criteria, questions the argument, and marks a draft against the published descriptors so the student knows which criterion is costing them. The school supervisor's role and deadlines stand untouched. Any provider offering a finished essay is offering the student an academic-honesty investigation.

05

From MYP into the Diploma: where the eighteen-month gap shows

A student who has spent five years being assessed against criteria A to D on a 1 to 8 scale arrives in DP1 and meets papers marked against assessment objectives on a 1 to 7 scale. The two systems are related and they do not feel related. Strong MYP students are often the ones who struggle most in the first term, because the habits that earned them a 7 on a criterion do not automatically earn them a 5 on a Diploma paper.

The gap shows up in three specific places. First, timed written answers: MYP assessment often allows planning time and redrafting, while a Diploma paper rewards a structured answer produced in twelve minutes. Second, algebraic fluency, where MYP mathematics can be navigated with a calculator and a method sheet and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches cannot. Third, command terms, which carry specific meanings in the Diploma that MYP uses more loosely.

There is a parallel gap for students coming from IGCSE, and it is almost the opposite. An IGCSE student has strong exam technique and weak independent research experience, so they handle Paper 1 confidently and flounder on the internal assessment. An MYP student usually arrives with the reverse profile. Knowing which of the two your child is makes the first term of DP1 much cheaper to fix.

The useful intervention is short and early. A diagnostic in the first six weeks of DP1 on timed writing, algebraic manipulation and command-term reading will show which of the three gaps is present. Six to eight weekly sessions on the specific gap generally closes it, after which most students need subject work rather than transition work. Families who miss that window usually end up buying a full year of support instead.

06

Finding a session slot that survives the Al Qusais school run

This is the unglamorous reason tutoring arrangements fail, and it is entirely predictable. A slot agreed in September at 16:30 is already wrong if the child gets home at 16:20, because nobody can walk through the door and start a Higher Level chemistry session. Three cancellations later the arrangement quietly ends, and the family concludes that tutoring did not work.

Work it out properly once. Note the actual school finish time, not the published one. Add the bus route, which from Al Garhoud into Al Qusais is twenty to thirty minutes in term time and longer if the route serves Mirdif first, and from Academic City can be forty-five. Add twenty minutes for arriving, eating and changing. That gives the earliest honest start. For most Diploma students in this district it lands between 16:45 and 17:30.

Then decide how many sessions the week can carry. A student on a long bus route who leaves at 06:30 manages one weekday session well and two badly. A student with a short journey can carry two. Weekend slots are more reliable than Thursday evenings for almost everyone, and during Ramadan the whole pattern shifts, with post-Iftar sessions working better than late afternoons.

Because lessons are delivered over live video, moving a slot costs nothing but a message, which is the practical advantage over an arrangement that requires somebody to drive into Al Qusais. A session displaced by a fixture or a school revision clinic moves to another evening the same week instead of being written off. Over two Diploma years that recovers a meaningful number of hours.

What a trial lesson should have told you in forty minutes

A trial is a diagnostic, not a sales meeting, and it should be judged on what it produced rather than on whether everyone enjoyed it. By the end of forty minutes you should know three things: what the tutor identified as the actual problem, why they think that, and what they would do about it in the first three sessions.

The first signal is whether the tutor worked on real material. A trial conducted on a generic worksheet tells you nothing about your child's course. A trial worked on this week's class topic or last term's mock script tells you whether the tutor can read a script, spot the pattern in the errors, and say something specific about it. Ask for your child's current material to be used, and treat reluctance as information.

The second signal is the diagnosis itself. "She needs to build confidence" is not a diagnosis. "She can differentiate correctly but loses the chain rule inside a product, and she is not reading the command term before she starts, so she is describing where the question asks her to evaluate" is a diagnosis. The second kind can be worked on next Tuesday. The first kind cannot be worked on at all.

The third signal is your child's reaction, which is worth more than most parents allow. A student who comes out of a trial able to explain what they got wrong has been taught. A student who comes out saying it was fine has been entertained. If the fit is wrong, say so and ask for a different tutor; a provider that resists that conversation is telling you how the next six months will go.

08

Ramadan, holidays and the shape of the UAE school year

A tutoring plan written in September that ignores the UAE calendar will be rewritten twice by March. School hours shorten during Ramadan, the pattern of the day changes, and revision that was going to happen in the late afternoon needs to move. Families who plan for this keep their momentum; families who do not lose four to six weeks at the point in DP2 where those weeks are most expensive.

The practical adjustment is straightforward. Sessions move to post-Iftar slots, which for many students are genuinely more productive than a late afternoon in a normal term because the day's obligations are done. Session length often drops while frequency rises, because concentration in a shorter block is better than endurance in a long one. Internal assessment deadlines that sit just after Ramadan need their real work pulled forward rather than squeezed.

The long summer break is the other structural feature, and it is used badly more often than well. Three months of nothing costs a Diploma student real fluency in mathematics and in a language acquisition subject. Three months of daily tutoring is unnecessary and usually abandoned by August. A light, specific schedule, one or two sessions a week on the two subjects that decay fastest, holds the ground without burning the holiday.

For students between DP1 and DP2 the summer has a specific job: the internal assessment. This is the one period with time to think about a research question properly, collect data without a timetable in the way, and get a draft to a stage where the autumn deadline is a formality instead of a crisis. An Al Qusais family that uses six weeks of the summer this way buys back the whole autumn term.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Qusais

Students taught through IB Gram live across north-east Dubai and the Sharjah border districts. The notes below concern school journeys and timetable reality, because that is what decides whether a session slot survives past October.

Al Qusais

Red Line access at three stations and quick links to Ittihad Road. Most Diploma students here travel out of the district to school, which means the usable session window opens later than parents first assume.

Al Twar

Immediately inland, sharing bus routes with Al Qusais. Households often have one child on a 14:45 finish and another on 15:45, which rules out a single shared slot and argues for staggered bookings.

Al Nahda

Crosses the Dubai-Sharjah boundary. A Diploma student living here may attend a Dubai school and a sibling a Sharjah one, which puts two different regulators and two different term calendars in the same household.

Al Garhoud

A short hop from Al Qusais with several IB schools. A 15:30 finish plus the return journey usually makes 17:00 the first realistic start on a weekday.

Al Jaddaf and Festival City

IB continuum provision reached along Ras Al Khor Road. Journeys are quick off-peak and slow at 15:30, which is exactly when the school run happens.

Mirdif

Later finishes and sixth-form revision sessions that run to 16:30 make the early evening tight. Weekend slots are often the more reliable half of a two-session week here.

Academic City

Reached from Al Qusais via Al Ain Road, with some of the longest bus routes in this cohort. A student on that route realistically manages one weekday session, not two.

Deira and Al Mamzar

Short journeys and settled routines. Families here often prefer 16:30 starts, which is the one part of this corridor where an earlier slot genuinely works.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Qusais

Schools inside and beside Al Qusais

Strong British and Indian curriculum provision within the district, with Diploma students generally travelling out. That travel is the reason local tutor listings and local Diploma need do not line up.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, the level and the component

Not "he needs help with chemistry" but "Chemistry HL, losing marks on Paper 2 extended response and the internal assessment analysis". If you do not know the component, send the last mock script and we will tell you which one it is.

  2. 02

Work out the slot before the tutor

Actual school finish, actual journey home, actual earliest start. Doing this first prevents the most common failure, which is a good tutor booked into an hour that does not exist. Weekend slots are included in the options.

  3. 03

Trial lesson on your child's own material

The tutor works on this week's topic or a marked mock script and comes back with a specific diagnosis and a first-three-sessions plan. You get that in writing. A wrong fit is re-matched rather than argued about.

  4. 04

Sessions against the school's internal calendar

The plan is set against internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay reflection sessions and the mock window, which the school publishes. Intensity rises and falls with that calendar rather than running flat all year.

  5. 05

    Reset after mocks

Mock scripts are read component by component and the plan is rebuilt from what they show. This is the point at which many families reduce from two subjects to one, which is usually the right call and saves money.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The match ignores distance on purpose

Because lessons are one-to-one over live video, the tutor is chosen for having taught your child's subject at your child's level rather than for living within reach of Al Qusais. On Higher Level options that is the whole difference.

Slots built on real journey times

We set the session against when your child actually gets home from Al Garhoud, Festival City or Academic City. A slot that survives the school run in October still exists in March, which is the only test that matters.

The core treated as marks, not decoration

The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge carry up to three diploma points and are barely tutored in this market. We teach their criteria and mark drafts against the published descriptors while the student writes every word.

Dates referred to their source

IB examination and results dates are set by the IB, so we point you to your school's Diploma coordinator and ibo.org rather than restating a date here. Regulatory and board facts on this page carry their source.

Delivery disclosed at the top of the page

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai and holds no UAE premises. The model is stated before anything is quoted rather than discovered afterwards.

Short engagements where that is the right answer

A six to eight week block on one broken component is often better value than a year of general support. We will say when that is the case, including when the honest answer is that no tutoring is needed yet.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Qusais: your questions answered

Does it matter that an IB tutor is not physically near Al Qusais?+

For the teaching, no. For the match, it matters a great deal in your favour. Requiring proximity restricts the choice to tutors who can reach your building, and in a district where the Diploma cohort is small that removes most genuine specialists. Lessons through IB Gram are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the question becomes who is free at 17:30 rather than who lives near Damascus Street. Home visits are something IB Gram runs only in India, which is stated here rather than discovered later.

What should I ask a prospective IB tutor on the first phone call?+

Three questions. What is the internal assessment in this subject marked against, criterion by criterion? What is each paper worth at this level? And given this mock script, which topic and which command term lost the marks? Someone who teaches the subject regularly answers all three without hesitating. Someone who does not will redirect to motivation, rapport and years of experience. Years of experience across ten year groups and four curricula is not the same credential as having taught this course this year.

How much of the Diploma grade is already fixed before the final exams?+

A substantial share. Every subject carries an internally marked assessment, moderated by the IB, typically worth somewhere between a fifth and a quarter of the subject grade. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together contribute up to three points of the 45. Those marks are settled across DP1 and DP2 on the school's internal calendar. That is why support starting in the spring of DP2 can improve the examined papers but cannot touch half of what has already been banked.

My child lives in Al Nahda and goes to a Dubai school. Which regulator covers them?+

The school's regulator, not the home's. A school in Dubai answers to KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and publishes inspection ratings. A school across the boundary in Sharjah answers to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education there and also approves fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods. In a household with children on both sides, that means two sets of inspection reports and sometimes two term calendars to plan around.

Is it worth paying for tutoring on the Extended Essay and TOK?+

Often it is the best value on the whole diploma, because the two together carry up to three points and almost nobody tutors them. The marks are lost early: a research question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words, or a TOK essay that discusses a topic instead of arguing the prescribed title. A tutor teaches the criteria, interrogates the question and marks drafts against the published descriptors. The student writes every word, and the school supervisor's role and deadlines stand unchanged.

My child did MYP and is struggling in the first term of DP1. Is that normal?+

Common enough to be predictable. Five years of criterion-referenced assessment on a 1 to 8 scale does not prepare a student for timed papers marked on a 1 to 7 scale against assessment objectives. The gap usually shows in three places: producing a structured written answer in twelve minutes, algebraic fluency without a method sheet, and reading Diploma command terms precisely. Six to eight sessions on whichever of those is actually missing generally closes it, which is far cheaper than a year of general subject support.

What time can a session realistically start for a student travelling back from Academic City?+

Later than most families first assume. A bus route from Academic City into Al Qusais takes thirty-five to fifty minutes in term time, so a 15:30 finish means arriving home around 16:20 at best, and 17:30 to 18:00 is the earliest honest start once eating and changing are counted. A student on that route carries one weekday session well and two badly. Weekend slots are usually the more reliable half of a two-session week, and online delivery means a displaced slot moves rather than disappears.

How do I tell a specialist from a general tutor who also lists the IB?+

By what they can describe without preparation. A specialist names the internal assessment criteria for the subject, says what each paper is worth at Higher and Standard Level, and can tell you which option topics their students usually find hardest. A generalist talks in terms of curricula rather than syllabuses, lists a wide year range, and answers questions about assessment with answers about motivation. Both can be perfectly competent teachers; only one of them is going to move a Higher Level Paper 3 mark.

Should tutoring continue through the summer between DP1 and DP2?+

A light schedule, yes, and for one specific reason: the internal assessment. The summer is the only period with enough space to choose a research question properly, collect data without a timetable interfering, and get a draft to a state where the autumn deadline is routine rather than a crisis. One or two sessions a week on the subjects that decay fastest, usually mathematics and a language acquisition subject, holds fluency. Daily tutoring across six subjects gets abandoned by August and wastes the money.

How do lessons change during Ramadan?+

School hours shorten and the whole day reshapes, so sessions move rather than pause. Post-Iftar slots work well for many students because the day's obligations are finished, and shorter, more frequent sessions beat long ones. The planning point is to pull forward real work on any internal assessment deadline that falls just after Ramadan, because the weeks immediately before it are not going to deliver what a September plan assumed. Because teaching is online, moving a slot costs a message rather than a journey.

Is it sensible to use the same tutor for two of my child's Diploma subjects?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, because there is real overlap between mathematics and the physical sciences, and between the essay-based humanities. Where it stops working is at the top of Higher Level, because each subject's Paper 3 or equivalent rewards quite specific habits. For a student stabilising a grade 4 in two related subjects, one tutor is efficient. For a student chasing a 6 or 7 in both, two specialists usually produce more than one generalist splitting the hour.

What does a tuition centre near Al Qusais offer that online one-to-one does not?+

A room, a fixed timetable and other students, which suits some children genuinely well. What it does not offer is a subject-level match: a centre staffs for the curricula in local demand, which in this district means British and Indian curriculum work rather than Diploma Higher Level options. Group sessions also move at the group's pace. A centre operating with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a reasonable thing to ask to see.

When should we stop tutoring?+

When the component that was broken is fixed, which is usually earlier than a provider will volunteer. The honest marker is the error log: when the same mistakes stop recurring in timed questions and the student can explain their own method without prompting, the weekly session has done its job. Many families reduce from two subjects to one after the mocks, and that is normally the right call. An open-ended arrangement that nobody reviews is how tutoring budgets quietly double.

Do you teach the MYP as well as the Diploma for students in this area?+

Yes, and the work looks different. MYP subjects are assessed against criteria A to D with achievement levels converted to a 1 to 8 grade, so the useful teaching is often about what a criterion strand actually asks for rather than about content. Schools in this corridor vary in how long they run MYP, with some continuing to Year 11 and eAssessment and others switching to IGCSE after Year 9. Those two routes need different Year 9 preparation, so we ask which one your school takes.

Swap the map pin for a subject and a component

If you have typed "IB tutor near me" and the results have not helped, the fix is to change what you are searching for. Send us the subject, the level, the school and the component where marks are going, plus when your child actually gets home to Al Qusais. We will propose a specialist and a trial slot that fits that hour, and the trial will come back with a specific diagnosis in writing rather than an impression. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. If the fit is wrong, we re-match instead of persuading you.
