IB Physics Tutor in The Views

Hunting for an IB physics tutor in The Views raises a question worth asking out loud: does the person actually teach the current syllabus? The course was rebuilt for first teaching in 2023, the options are gone and Paper 1 is now split in two. IB Gram matches your child with a physics specialist who teaches that version at their level, and the lesson runs live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time from Emirates Living.

  • Tutors teach the 2023 physics guide, not the pre-2025 version of it
  • Matched by level, because Higher Level extends every theme

IB & IGCSE in The Views

The question is not who is nearby. It is who teaches the current course.

A parent in The Views searching for a physics tutor is usually two weeks past a report that said something like working below potential. The instinct is to find someone local and start quickly. The better first question is narrower: does this person teach the IB physics syllabus as it stands now, or the one they learned on? The course was substantially rebuilt for first teaching in 2023, with first examinations in 2025. The optional topics that used to end the course are gone. Paper 1 has been split into a multiple-choice section and a separate data-analysis section. Content is organised into five themes rather than the old topic numbering.

That matters practically rather than academically. A tutor working from pre-2025 material will spend sessions on an option your child is not studying, will prepare for a Paper 1 that no longer exists in that form, and will teach the internal assessment as though it were the old two-part model rather than the single scientific investigation marked out of twenty-four. Everything they say about physics will be true. Very little of it will be aimed at the examination your child is sitting.

The second thing worth saying plainly is that there is no reason the right person lives near Emirates Golf Club. IB physics at Higher Level is a narrow specialism. Roughly seven per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment sits on an IB programme at all, and of those students a minority take physics, and of those a smaller group take it at Higher Level. Filtering that pool by who can drive to a Views tower by 17:30 leaves whoever remains, which is not a method. So IB Gram matches on the subject, the level and the failing component, and the lesson arrives over live video, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. Nobody travels to a UAE address; in-home visiting is a service we run in India only.

For physics specifically, the screen is an advantage rather than a concession. Half of what a physics tutor does is drawing: a free-body diagram built up one force at a time, a field pattern sketched and corrected, a graph with a tangent drawn at the right point and the gradient read off properly. On a shared whiteboard all of that is visible, reversible and saved for the following week. A spreadsheet of experimental data can be manipulated live while the student watches the uncertainty propagate. Across a dining table, both people are drawing on the same sheet of paper upside down.

The rest of this page is written so you can test any physics tutor, ours or anyone else's. It sets out the five themes and what Higher Level adds to each. It gives the assessment model with the weightings and the durations. It names the six specific ways physics marks are lost, which is more useful than a topic list. It explains the data-based question and uncertainty arithmetic, the four criteria of the scientific investigation with their mark allocations, and the mathematics problem that sits underneath more physics failures than anything else.

It publishes no examination date. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so nothing of that kind in this project has been verified at source, and your school's IB coordinator is the only authority worth using. It publishes no grade guarantee and claims no approval from the IB, KHDA or the Ministry of Education, because IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and holds none. IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics appears at three points in a Views student's path, and each one is a different teaching job. The level matters more here than in almost any other Diploma subject, because Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra hours.

DP HLAges 16-19 · 240 taught hours

Physics, Higher Level

All five themes taken to the additional Higher Level depth, with the scientific investigation at 20% of the grade. Paper 1 carries 36% and is split between a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section; Paper 2 carries 44% and is extended response. Higher Level content extends each theme rather than sitting alongside it, which is why a mid-course change of level is harder in physics than in most subjects.

The level most Views students taking physics are on, since they tend to be heading for engineering, medicine or the physical sciences. It is also the level where tutoring demand peaks in the first term of DP2, when the extended-response paper starts to separate students who understand physics from students who can write about it.

DP SLAges 16-19 · 150 taught hours

Physics, Standard Level

The same five themes at reduced depth, with the same assessment structure and the same 20% scientific investigation. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are shorter. The content is less extended but the skill demands are identical: uncertainties, graph interpretation and explanation writing are assessed in the same way.

Frequently chosen by Views students who want a physical science without six Higher Level commitments, and the usual landing place for students who begin at Higher Level and move down during DP1. Moving in November is routine; moving in April is not, because the investigation is already under way.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences, the feeder

Integrated or separate sciences assessed against four criteria rather than percentage marks. Students arrive in the Diploma strong on investigation design and weak on quantitative work, because criterion-based assessment rewards process and the Diploma papers reward precise calculation and precise explanation under timing.

The MYP-to-Diploma physics transition is a recurring request from the Emirates Living schools running the continuum. The gap is almost entirely numerical: rearranging equations, handling units and significant figures, and reading a graph quantitatively rather than describing its shape.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics into the Diploma

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 before the Diploma. Both cover similar ground at a level that assumes formulas are given and used rather than derived. Neither prepares a student for the explanation demands of Diploma Paper 2, where a correct equation earns nothing without the reasoning around it.

An Extended grade 7 in IGCSE physics is a respectable result and an unreliable predictor of Higher Level success. The variable that matters more is mathematics: a student entering Higher Level physics without comfortable algebra will struggle regardless of their physics grade, and that is the single most common pattern we see from this community.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics rarely arrives alone on a request from The Views. These are the subjects and components most often tutored alongside it, with the specific demand each one makes.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes, two papers and a scientific investigation. Marks are lost in uncertainty arithmetic, in graph work where the gradient has to answer the question asked, and above all in extended-response explanation where a student states what happens instead of why.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route that supports Higher Level physics properly. Algebraic rearrangement, calculus and function handling appear constantly inside physics questions, and a student fluent here has capacity left for the physics itself.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A frequent and under-discussed problem when paired with Higher Level physics at Standard Level. The modelling route does not drill algebraic manipulation to the same depth, and the shortfall shows up as apparent physics weakness in DP1.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the 2023 assessment model and the same single scientific investigation, so a student doing both has two investigations to manage in the same window. Energetics and equilibrium carry the lost marks on the chemistry side.

Biology

HL and SL

Also on the 2023 model. Taken by medicine candidates alongside physics and chemistry, which makes DP1 the busiest internal-assessment year any Diploma student will have and a scheduling problem as much as a teaching one.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Common pairing with Higher Level physics. The theory paper rewards precise vocabulary about data and complexity, which is the same writing discipline physics Paper 2 rewards and is often worth tutoring once for both.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Overlaps physics in materials, forces and energy, and shares the investigation-style internal assessment. Students who enjoy physics practically and struggle with its algebra often do well here, which is worth knowing at option-choice time.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Physics is the natural science students most often use as an example and most often handle badly, because they treat experimental results as certainty rather than examining how physical knowledge is justified and revised.

Extended Essay in physics

Core, 4,000 words

Chosen by a steady trickle of Higher Level students. The difficulty is the research question: an experimental essay needs a measurable relationship and equipment the school actually has, and most failed physics essays failed at that first decision.

The scientific investigation

Internal assessment, 20%

One investigation, twenty-four marks, four criteria. Students lose most on evaluation, because they list limitations instead of weighing which one actually mattered to the conclusion they reached.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics bookings from this community cluster around three moments: the quantitative wall in DP1, the investigation window, and the extended-response paper in DP2. Each has its own session shape.

Weekly level-matched session

Sixty minutes on one fixed evening, following the school's teaching order. Started in DP1 it prevents the two problems that otherwise arrive together: a content gap in fields or waves, and an untreated weakness in rearranging equations that makes every later theme harder than it needs to be.

  • 60 minutes, one named evening, the same tutor throughout
  • Follows the school's scheme of work rather than a textbook order
  • Typical starts 16:45 from Meadows, 17:30 from Al Sufouh
  • Written note after each session naming what to practise

Investigation support block

Four to eight sessions across the weeks the scientific investigation is being designed and written. The work is criterion coaching and feedback on the student's own drafts: testing whether the research question yields a measurable relationship, whether the method controls what it claims to, and whether the evaluation weighs limitations rather than listing them.

  • 4-8 sessions timed to the school's own interim deadlines
  • Four criteria taught explicitly with the mark allocation shown
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts; nothing written for them
  • The school's supervisor stays in charge of the process

Paper 2 explanation block

Ninety minutes at the weekend through DP2, aimed at the extended-response paper that carries 44% of the grade. Students write explanations in the session and have them marked in the session, because explanation writing is the one physics skill that cannot be improved by reading about it.

  • 90 minutes, weekend morning, written under timing
  • Explanations marked live against the published command terms
  • Also used for the data-analysis section of Paper 1
  • Common from the first term of DP2 onwards

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Views

01

Five themes, and what Higher Level adds to each

The current syllabus organises physics into five themes rather than the numbered topic list older material uses, and the optional topics that used to sit at the end of the course have been removed. For a parent the practical value of knowing this is that it gives you a way to check whether a tutor is current within about thirty seconds of conversation.

The themes run from motion and mechanics, through the particulate nature of matter and thermal physics, into wave behaviour, then fields including gravitational, electric and magnetic effects, and finally nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level does not bolt on a separate module. It extends each theme, which is why moving between levels mid-course is harder in physics than in subjects where the Higher Level content is separable. A student who drops to Standard Level in February has been studying extended material all year and has to re-sort what is and is not assessed.

Where Views students lose marks is reasonably predictable by theme. Fields is the hardest for most, because it is abstract and because the mathematics is unforgiving. Wave behaviour catches students who can recite the equations and cannot handle a phase or path-difference argument. Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last and revised least, which makes it a reliable source of recoverable marks late in DP2. Mechanics feels easy and is where careless loss happens, particularly in questions involving two linked bodies.

One caution, stated once and meant. Subject guides are revised, and a tutoring page is not the authority on the current specification. If a syllabus detail matters to a decision you are making, confirm it through the school's IB coordinator or the current subject guide rather than relying on this page or any other.

Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2: the assessment model with the weightings

Very few families can say how their child's physics grade is composed, and the composition is what tells you what kind of help is worth buying. A student losing marks in multiple choice and a student losing marks in extended response need almost opposite interventions.

Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and is in two parts. The first is multiple choice, which rewards fast, secure recall and punishes a student who tries to derive everything from first principles under time pressure. The second is a data-analysis section built on experimental results, which rewards graph work, uncertainty handling and the ability to say what a gradient physically represents. Those are two different skills inside one paper, and a student can be strong at one and weak at the other while the overall mark hides it.

Paper 2 carries 44% and is extended response. This is where the grade is usually decided and where the most marks are quietly thrown away. The paper rewards structured explanation: naming the physical principle, applying it to the specific situation in the question, and reaching a conclusion that answers what was asked. A correct equation with no reasoning around it scores a fraction of the available marks. The command terms are published and they are not decorative: explain, outline, discuss and justify ask for genuinely different answers, and students who treat them as synonyms lose marks in every question.

The scientific investigation makes up the remaining 20%, written during DP1 and marked out of twenty-four. The arithmetic to hold on to is that Paper 2 and the investigation together are nearly two thirds of the grade, and both are about writing physics rather than doing calculations. Most tutoring in this subject is bought for calculations.

03

Uncertainties: the arithmetic nobody is taught properly

  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty mixed inside one calculation
  • Percentage uncertainties added when a quantity is raised to a power
  • Results quoted to more significant figures than the uncertainty allows
  • Error bars drawn and then ignored by the line of best fit
  • Maximum and minimum gradients never considered
  • Uncertainty treated as a formality rather than part of the conclusion

If there is a single technical topic that costs IB physics students more marks than any other, it is uncertainty handling, and it is almost never the reason a family seeks a tutor. It appears in the data-analysis section of Paper 1, it appears throughout the scientific investigation, and it appears in Paper 2 wherever a question asks a student to comment on the reliability of a result.

The problems are consistent. Students confuse absolute and percentage uncertainty and mix them inside one calculation. They add percentage uncertainties when a quantity is multiplied, which is right, and then do the same when it is raised to a power, which is not. They quote a result to six significant figures with an uncertainty in the first decimal place, which tells an examiner immediately that the arithmetic was done without thought. They draw error bars and then fit a line that ignores them, or draw a line of best fit and never consider the maximum and minimum gradients the bars allow.

None of that is conceptually difficult, and that is exactly why it goes untaught. Schools cover it in a lesson early in DP1 and then assume it, because there is a syllabus to finish and uncertainties are not a theme. By the time the investigation is being written, a student is applying rules they half-remember to their own data, and the marks for analysis and conclusion are lost on arithmetic rather than physics.

It is also the single clearest case for an online session over a tutor at a dining table. Uncertainty work is spreadsheet work: a column of raw measurements, a column of means, a column of absolute uncertainties, a propagated result. On a shared screen a tutor can change one input and let the student watch the propagated uncertainty move, which is the moment the rules stop being arbitrary. Across a table, with one calculator between two people, it is a lecture.

04

Writing physics: why a correct equation earns almost nothing

The hardest thing to explain to a capable physics student is that knowing the answer is not the task. Paper 2 carries 44% of the grade and it is a writing paper. The marks are allocated to steps in an argument, and a student who writes the final relationship without the argument has produced a result the examiner cannot award.

A typical example runs like this. A question asks a student to explain why the current through a component changes when something else in the circuit is altered. The student writes the correct final statement about the current and stops. The mark scheme wanted the resistance change named, the effect on the total circuit resistance stated, the consequence for the total current derived, and only then the conclusion about the component. Four marks were available and one was earned, and the student genuinely understood the physics throughout.

The second pattern is command-term blindness. Outline, describe, explain, discuss, justify, suggest and evaluate ask for different things, and the mark allocation tells you how much. A two-mark explain question wants two linked steps. A four-mark discuss question wants a position and a counter-consideration. Students who write the same shape of answer regardless of the instruction lose a steady percentage across every paper, and because the loss is spread thinly it never appears as a topic weakness on any report.

This is the most coachable part of the subject and the least commonly bought. It needs a student to write answers under timing and have them marked immediately against the real allocation, with the tutor pointing at where the second and third marks were sitting unclaimed. Six to ten sessions of that in DP2 moves a grade more reliably than another pass through fields, and it is why the physics bookings from this community cluster on weekend mornings where there is time to write.

05

The scientific investigation: four criteria, twenty-four marks

The internal assessment in physics is a single scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade, written during DP1 and marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each. Almost no family has seen that allocation, and seeing it changes how a student spends their time, because the two criteria students treat as an afterthought carry half the marks.

Research design comes first and decides the rest. A question that does not yield a measurable relationship cannot produce a good analysis however well the student works, and most weak investigations were lost at this point. The commonest failure in this community is an ambitious question requiring equipment the school does not have, closely followed by a question so safe that there is nothing to analyse. Data analysis is the second criterion, and it is where the uncertainty arithmetic discussed above either holds up or does not.

Conclusion and evaluation carry the other twelve marks and are where capable students throw them away. A conclusion must be stated in terms of the research question, with reference to the data and to accepted physics, and qualified by the uncertainty. Students instead write that the hypothesis was supported. Evaluation must weigh which limitation actually mattered to the result obtained, and propose a realistic improvement. Students instead list every imperfection they can think of, which earns almost nothing because no judgement has been exercised.

What a tutor may do here is bounded and worth stating. The criteria can be taught, because they are published. A research question can be narrowed and pressure-tested in conversation. A technique can be demonstrated on entirely different data so the method transfers without the content being handed over. A draft the student has written can be read and told which criterion is underserved and why. What a tutor must not do is write any part of it, rewrite a passage, or supply data or a conclusion. The school's supervisor runs the process and signs it off, and that is where it belongs.

06

The mathematics problem underneath most physics failures

A pattern worth naming, because it accounts for a large share of the physics enquiries from The Views and is almost always diagnosed as a physics problem. A student takes Higher Level physics alongside Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level. They are capable. They work. Physics goes wrong anyway, and nobody can say why.

The reason is that Higher Level physics assumes algebraic fluency rather than algebraic competence. Questions require rearranging a relationship with three or four variables, substituting one expression into another, handling indices and powers of ten without thinking, and occasionally differentiating. The Applications and Interpretation route is a perfectly good mathematics course and it does not drill those manipulations to the same depth, because its own assessment does not need them. A student who has to stop and think about rearranging has no working memory left for the physics in the question.

The diagnosis is easy to run at home. Give the student a physics question they got wrong and ask them to talk through it. If they can state the physical principle correctly and then stall on the algebra, the problem is mathematical. If they cannot state the principle, it is physics. In this community the first is more common than the second, and the two require different tutors or at least different sessions.

The practical remedy depends on timing. In DP1 the honest answer is sometimes to fix the mathematics instead of the physics for six weeks, which feels counterintuitive and works. In DP2 there is less room, so the work becomes drilling the specific manipulations physics questions actually require rather than mathematics in general. At option-choice time the useful advice is simpler: a student intending Higher Level physics is usually better served by Analysis and Approaches, even at Standard Level, than by the modelling route.

07

Ten minutes of questions that identify a current physics specialist

You do not need physics to test a physics tutor. You need questions whose answers are specific to the current course, because those are the ones a confident generalist cannot produce. Ask them in the free first lesson, of us or of anybody else, and listen for precision rather than reassurance.

The most useful single question is what happened to the options. A tutor teaching the current course will say immediately that the optional topics were removed in the 2023 guide and may add that it changed how the final term is spent. A tutor working from older material will either describe an option as though your child is studying it or become vague. The second most useful is how Paper 1 is structured, because the split into a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section is recent and specific.

Then the internal assessment. Ask how it is marked. The answer you want names four criteria at six marks each, twenty-four in total, and ideally mentions that conclusion and evaluation carry half of them. An answer describing two separate pieces of work, or a general coursework grade, tells you the person is recalling an older model. And ask what they would want to see before the second session: your child's marked script or investigation draft is the right answer, their own diagnostic test is a weaker one.

A tutor who offers to confirm something against the current subject guide is being honest, and that is a better signal than a fluent wrong answer. Guides do change. What should concern you is an hour of reassurance containing no component names, no weightings and no mention of command terms.

What a Higher Level physics specialist costs, from the top down

Physics is one of the subjects where the premium end of the Dubai market genuinely exists for a reason, so it is worth reading the rates from the top rather than the bottom. Scarcity is real here: Higher Level physics with strong uncertainty and extended-response teaching is a narrow specialism, and a narrow specialism is priced accordingly.

At the top of the published market, BartyED is quoted at AED 650 an hour for premium examiner-led tutoring. Below that, named IB and IGCSE specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table reaching AED 450 or more at the specialist end. In-home one-to-one visits sit across the middle at AED 180 to AED 500 including travel, with Bestimate's usual band AED 180 to AED 350. Qualified online subject tutoring begins around AED 150, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. The bottom of the market is online supervision from university students, advertised from roughly AED 33 to AED 52 by Tutopiya and AED 45 to AED 65 by EdFlik.

For Higher Level physics the bottom band is rarely the right purchase, and that is an unusual thing for a tutoring page to say. Supervision can keep a student at a desk through a problem set. It cannot diagnose whether a mock script lost marks to uncertainty arithmetic, to command-term blindness or to the mathematics underneath. For Standard Level content consolidation it is a reasonable choice. For a DP2 student who needs Paper 2 explanation work, paying AED 60 an hour for eight months is a more expensive mistake than paying AED 250 for ten sessions.

Read by the month, Bestimate's Dubai estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, which is the band most Higher Level physics arrangements land in. Every figure here is that provider's own published rate as read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no fixed price list on these pages, because level, component and slot all change what the right tutor costs; your quote follows the free first lesson.

Starting from The Views, and the limits stated first

Four things get this moving: the school, the level, the component where marks are going, and the evenings that are genuinely free. If you do not know the component, that is normal and the free lesson establishes it. Bring a marked mock script or the investigation draft; real marked work tells a tutor in ten minutes what a conversation cannot tell them in an hour, because it shows whether the marks went to recall, to uncertainty arithmetic, to explanation or to the mathematics underneath.

The free first lesson is one per family, about thirty minutes, with no charge and no card details taken. A good one ends with the tutor naming the pattern and outlining the first four sessions, including whether part of the work is actually mathematical. A session that ends with a general offer to go through the syllabus is a weaker sign, and it has cost you nothing to find that out.

Then the arrangement is deliberately ordinary. Same tutor, same evening, a short written note after each session. The notes matter in physics more than in most subjects, because the gains are specific and cumulative: uncertainty rules secured in week two should not still be a problem in week eight, and the notes are how you see that. If the match is wrong, say so after the second lesson and we will change the tutor rather than defend it.

The limits, stated before you book. Nobody travels to a UAE address; home visiting is an India-only service. No examination date appears on this page, because the IB's site cannot be checked automatically and the school's IB coordinator is the only source worth using. We do not reproduce or supply IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, because they belong to the IB; we reference them. No grade is guaranteed. No part of an investigation is written for your child. And when no Higher Level physics specialist is free in your slot, you get the realistic date instead of a general science tutor.

Emirates International School Meadows runs the full IB continuum, so a significant share of the Views Diploma physics cohort is here and can reach an early evening session easily.

Emirates Hills

Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and Dubai British School Emirates Hills. Both carry Diploma physics at Higher Level, and together they generate most of the Higher Level enquiries from this part of Dubai.

The Lakes

Villa community across the golf course, driven rather than bussed, which moves the realistic session start past 17:00 and puts more of this group on weekend blocks.

Al Sufouh

Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School. Selective intakes, so physics enquiries from here are more often about Paper 2 explanation technique than about content gaps.

Al Barsha

Kings' School Al Barsha, Nord Anglia International School Dubai and American School of Dubai. A mixed curriculum picture and the usual source of students joining the Diploma from another system mid-course.

Barsha Heights

Group science classes run in the centres here. They work for shared Standard Level content and poorly for Higher Level physics, where the problems are individual and specific.

Dubai Internet City

The nearest metro station to The Views, and the reason some DP2 students can get themselves home from a Marina-side school in time for a 17:30 start.

Jumeirah Lake Towers

One interchange along, with its own tutoring market. A tutor based there spends twenty to forty minutes crossing Interchange 5 at 18:00, which is the cost built into any in-home rate.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Give us the level and the component

Higher or Standard Level, and which part is losing marks: multiple choice, the data-analysis section, extended response or the investigation. If you are unsure, say so; identifying it is the first job of the free lesson.

  2. 02

Send a marked script or the investigation draft

Real marked work distinguishes a recall problem from uncertainty arithmetic from command-term blindness from a mathematics gap. Those four have different remedies, and guessing between them wastes the first month of any arrangement.

  3. 03

Matched on level and failing component

A tutor is proposed because they teach physics at that level and work on that component. If the right specialist is two or three days out, you get the date rather than a general science tutor who is free tonight.

  4. 04

Free first lesson used as a diagnosis

One per family, around thirty minutes, no charge and no card details. It should end with the pattern named, including an honest answer about whether the real problem is the mathematics rather than the physics.

  5. 05

Review against the investigation and mock calendar

The plan follows your school's dates: the investigation interim deadlines in DP1, mocks in DP2, and the final two terms where Paper 2 explanation work belongs. Intensity rises before a checkpoint and drops after it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The current syllabus, not the one before it

Five themes, options removed, Paper 1 split into a multiple-choice and a data-analysis section, and a single scientific investigation out of twenty-four marks. A tutor working from older material teaches true physics towards the wrong examination.

Uncertainties treated as a topic in their own right

Absolute against percentage, propagation through powers, significant figures that match the uncertainty, and maximum and minimum gradients. It is the biggest single source of lost marks and it is almost never why a family calls.

Explanation writing is taught, not assumed

Paper 2 is 44% of the grade and it is a writing paper. Answers are written under timing and marked in the session against the real mark allocation and the published command terms.

Honest about the mathematics underneath

Where a Higher Level physics problem is really an algebra problem, we say so, even when that means six weeks of mathematics instead of the physics tutoring you came for.

Clear boundaries on the investigation

Criteria taught, research questions pressure-tested, techniques demonstrated on other data, feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing written for them, and the school's supervisor stays in charge.

Independent, with the gaps disclosed

No IB, KHDA or Ministry of Education approval is held or claimed, no examination dates are published here, and where Higher Level coverage in your slot is tight you are told before booking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Views: your questions answered

Did the IB physics course really change, and does it affect tutoring?+

Yes, substantially, and it affects tutoring more than most families realise. The current guide was for first teaching in 2023 with first examinations in 2025. The optional topics were removed, content was reorganised into five themes, and Paper 1 was split into a multiple-choice section and a separate data-analysis section. A tutor working from older material will prepare your child for an examination structure that no longer exists and may spend sessions on an option they are not studying. Ask the question directly before booking.

How is the physics internal assessment marked now?+

It is a single scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade, marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The important consequence is that conclusion and evaluation together carry half the marks, and they are the parts students write last and fastest. A conclusion must reference the data, the research question and accepted physics; an evaluation must weigh which limitation actually mattered rather than listing everything that was imperfect.

Which physics topic causes the most trouble for Dubai students?+

Fields is the hardest conceptually, because it is abstract and the mathematics is unforgiving, and sign conventions plus the distinction between field and potential account for a lot of lost marks. But the biggest single source of loss is not a theme at all: it is uncertainty arithmetic, which appears in the data-analysis section, throughout the investigation, and in any question about reliability. Students mix absolute and percentage uncertainty, mishandle powers, and quote results to more significant figures than the uncertainty allows.

My child understands physics but writes poor answers. Is that fixable?+

It is the most fixable thing in the subject, and it is worth a lot. Paper 2 carries 44% of the grade and awards marks to steps in an argument rather than to the final statement. A student who writes the correct conclusion without naming the principle, applying it and deriving the consequence earns one mark out of four on physics they genuinely understood. Six to ten sessions of writing answers under timing, marked immediately against the real allocation, moves a grade more reliably than another pass through content.

Could my child's physics problem actually be a maths problem?+

Very often, and it is the pattern we see most from this community. Higher Level physics assumes algebraic fluency, not competence: rearranging relationships with several variables, substituting expressions, handling powers of ten without pausing. A student on Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level may be perfectly able and simply not drilled in those manipulations. Test it at home: ask them to talk through a question they got wrong. If they state the principle correctly and stall on the algebra, the problem is mathematical.

How much extra work is Higher Level physics for a student in The Views?+

It is harder in a specific way. The five themes are the same, but Higher Level extends each one rather than adding a separable module, so the extra depth is distributed through the whole course. That is also why moving down a level mid-year is messier in physics than in some subjects: a student who switches in February has been studying extended material all year and has to work out what is still assessed. Moving in November is routine; moving in April is not, because the investigation is already running.

What is the data-analysis section of Paper 1 actually testing?+

Experimental reasoning rather than recall. It presents results from an investigation and asks a student to process them, graph them, handle their uncertainties and say what a gradient physically represents. Students who are strong in multiple choice are regularly weak here, because the skills have nothing in common. It is also the part of the paper that rewards practice on real datasets most directly, which is work done far better on a shared spreadsheet than on paper across a table.

How should we choose a physics investigation topic?+

Start from what can be measured with equipment the school actually has, and work backwards to a question. The commonest failure in this community is an ambitious question needing apparatus nobody owns, and the second commonest is a question so safe that there is nothing to analyse. A good research question yields a relationship between two variables with a range wide enough to graph. The school's supervisor approves the topic and owns the process; a tutor can pressure-test the question in conversation before it is submitted.

How much of the scientific investigation is a tutor allowed to touch?+

Yes, within a boundary that is easy to describe. A tutor can teach the four published criteria and their mark allocation, help narrow a research question, demonstrate a processing technique on completely different data, and read a draft the student has written and say which criterion is underserved. A tutor cannot write or rewrite any part of it, or supply data or a conclusion. The test a school applies is whether the work is recognisably your child's, in their own voice, with their own errors in it.

We are three months from the exams. Is physics tutoring still worth it?+

It depends on the diagnosis. The investigation is already submitted, so that twenty per cent is settled. Content gaps in fields cannot be rebuilt in three months and anyone promising otherwise is selling. What can be moved in that window is technique: command-term discipline on Paper 2, uncertainty rules for the data-analysis section, timing across whole papers, and the nuclear and quantum theme, which is usually taught last and revised least and therefore holds recoverable marks. Bring the mock script.

What should we budget for Higher Level physics support in Dubai?+

Most Higher Level arrangements land in the specialist band. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai monthly estimates put specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for one weekly hour, with mid-market at AED 600 to AED 1,200. Hourly, named specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium examiner-led tutoring at AED 650 by BartyED. Those are other providers' published October 2026 figures, not ours; we publish no fixed price list.

Is the cheapest online tutoring ever right for physics?+

For Standard Level content consolidation, sometimes. Online supervision from university students is advertised in Dubai from roughly AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, and for keeping a student moving through a problem set it does the job. For Higher Level it is usually the wrong purchase, because the task is diagnostic rather than supervisory: working out whether a mock script lost marks to uncertainties, to command terms or to the mathematics underneath needs somebody who knows the mark allocation. Eight months of the wrong band costs more than ten sessions of the right one.

Can one tutor take both physics and maths for the same student?+

Frequently yes, and in this subject it is often the better arrangement. A specialist in Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level commonly teaches physics as well, and where a physics problem is really an algebra problem one tutor holding both threads is more efficient than two. Where each subject has an independent problem, two specialists in two shorter sessions usually beats one person covering both, because depth in the failing component matters more than the convenience of a single booking.

Why does this page not give the physics exam dates?+

Because they could not be verified at source. The IB's own website returns an error to automated checking, so no session or results date in this project has been confirmed, and secondary sites occasionally disagree with each other. UAE schools sit the May session, and that much is safe to state. For the dates your child is working to, including internal investigation checkpoints and registration deadlines, the school's IB coordinator holds the authoritative version and it should be taken over anything published here.

What if no Higher Level physics tutor is free on our evening?+

You are told, with a realistic date. Higher Level physics in the 17:00 to 18:00 window is one of the tightest combinations in Dubai, because the specialism is narrow and every Emirates Living family wants the same hour. The alternative to saying so is placing a general science tutor in a Higher Level slot, which costs a term before anybody admits the mismatch. Usually the fix is an adjacent evening or a weekend morning; occasionally it is a short wait, and that decision is yours.

Ask about the 2023 guide before you ask about the price

The useful filter for a physics tutor is not distance from Emirates Golf Club. It is whether they teach the current course and can name the component costing your child marks. Tell us the level, send a marked mock script or the investigation draft, and say which evenings are genuinely free. We will propose a specialist who teaches that level and that component, arrange a free first lesson of about thirty minutes with no card details taken, and tell you honestly if the real problem is the mathematics underneath or if the right tutor is a few days out.
