IB Physics Tutor in Al Manara

An IB physics tutor in Al Manara has to fit into an afternoon that is already full. Your child is collected from Umm Suqeim or from Al Barsha, crosses Al Wasl Road or Sheikh Zayed Road in the 3pm traffic, and is home somewhere between 3:40 and 4:30. Everything below is written around that clock: which schools this pocket of Jumeirah actually feeds, what the day ends at, and when a physics session can realistically start. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Sessions scheduled against your child's real school finish time
  • Physics specialists matched by paper, not by postcode
  • Marked Paper 1, 2 and 3 scripts returned with the mark scheme cited
  • One trial lesson before you commit, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Al Manara

The afternoon is the constraint, not the physics

Al Manara is a small villa district wedged between Al Wasl Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, with Umm Suqeim on one side and Al Safa on the other. It has no IB school inside its own boundary. Every Diploma student living here travels, and the direction of that travel decides what time a physics session can start. Families who look coastward send children to Raffles World Academy or Kings' School Dubai in Umm Suqeim, or to Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in Al Safa. Families who look inland cross Sheikh Zayed Road towards Dubai American Academy and GEMS Wellington International School. Those two journeys are nothing alike at 3pm, and a tutoring plan that ignores the difference gets cancelled by the third week.

A coastward run is short in distance and awkward in timing. Umm Suqeim is four to six kilometres from most of Al Manara, but the roundabouts on Al Wasl and Jumeirah Beach Road absorb that distance in queues, and a bus that leaves school at 3:05pm can still be dropping at 3:45pm. The inland run is the opposite shape: a longer drive, but on Sheikh Zayed Road and the Al Barsha interchanges, where a bus route with six stops regularly turns a twelve-minute journey into forty. Diploma students on that route are rarely in the door before 4:15pm, and some are closer to 4:40pm.

That matters for physics specifically. Physics is the subject where a tired student produces work that looks like understanding and is not. A Paper 1 multiple-choice set finished at 9:30pm after four hours of other homework tells a tutor almost nothing, because the errors are fatigue errors rather than conceptual ones. Diagnosing where a Higher Level student is actually losing marks needs an hour when they are still able to reason, and in Al Manara that hour is usually 4:45pm to 6:15pm on a coastward schedule and 5:15pm to 6:45pm on an inland one.

Online delivery exists in this plan for a practical reason, not a philosophical one. IB Gram matches physics by component: a tutor who has taught Paper 3 Section B on the optional topic your child's school has chosen, who can mark an uncertainty treatment the way the published criteria mark it. The number of such teachers living within a twenty-minute drive of Al Manara is small, and if the search is restricted to that radius you end up choosing between availability and expertise. Delivered over live video, the radius stops mattering and the finish-time arithmetic becomes the only real constraint. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India.

The rest of this page is written in that order. First the school run and the slots it leaves. Then the Diploma physics course as the school week actually delivers it, the components and their weightings, and the places Al Manara students lose marks most often. Then what the Dubai market charges, what the travel premium buys, and where the scientific investigation ends and academic malpractice begins. Finally the practical mechanics: what to send before the first session, what a KHDA inspection band does and does not tell you, and what happens when the slot you need is not free.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Manara family's physics question is nearly always a Diploma question, but the subject starts earlier than DP1 and the schools in both commute directions run different approaches to it. These are the programmes in play for a student living here, and what each means for physics specifically.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is taught as an integrated subject in Years 7 to 9 and usually splits into separate physics, chemistry and biology teaching in Years 10 and 11. Assessment is against four criteria rather than a percentage, which is why a student can carry a 6 in MYP Science and still arrive in DP1 Physics unable to rearrange an equation under time pressure. The criteria reward investigation design and reflection, and those are real skills, but they are not the same skills Paper 1 tests.

Al Manara families usually meet MYP at Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim or at Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in Al Safa, both inside the coastward run. Because MYP finishes earlier in the day than the Diploma timetable at the same schools, a Year 10 student from Al Manara is frequently home by 3:30pm, which opens a 4pm slot that no Diploma student in the same household can use.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Diploma Physics is sat at Standard or Higher Level. Both levels share a common core and both are assessed by three written papers plus the scientific investigation, with Higher Level adding additional depth across the themes and a longer Paper 2. Higher Level is a two-year commitment with roughly 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, and that difference shows up most in the quantitative work: more algebra, more multi-step problems, less scaffolding in the question stems.

Students from Al Manara sit the Diploma at six or seven schools across the two commute directions, and the schools do not all choose the same Paper 3 optional material. Before any session is booked it is worth asking your child's physics teacher which option the cohort is following, because a tutor matched on the wrong one will be useful for two papers out of three.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Most British-curriculum schools within reach of Al Manara run IGCSE Physics as Cambridge 0625 or Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 before students choose between A Level and the Diploma. The two syllabuses cover similar ground and assess it differently: Cambridge tiers into Core and Extended with an alternative-to-practical option, Pearson examines on two papers with no tiering. Students arriving in DP1 from either route have usually met waves and electricity but not uncertainty propagation.

The inland schools from Al Manara are the IGCSE-heavy ones, and a Year 11 student there sitting 0625 in the June series has a different autumn from a DP1 student at the same address. If both children are in the same house, the IGCSE timetable collapses in April and May while the Diploma one collapses in March, which is useful when booking two slots.

CP/A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The alternative routes

Several schools in both commute directions offer A Level Physics alongside or instead of the Diploma. A Level is modular in content and assessed entirely externally, with practical endorsement rather than a graded internal task. Families comparing the two for a physics-leaning child should look at what the university target actually asks for: a UK engineering offer will specify A Level grades or Diploma points, and the two are not interchangeable in the way prospectus wording suggests.

The practical consequence for an Al Manara household is scheduling. A Level Physics students sit papers in a single window and can revise in long blocks; Diploma students carry the scientific investigation through DP1 and into DP2 alongside five other subjects, so their tutoring need is spread thin across eighteen months rather than concentrated in one term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is rarely the only subject in question. A Diploma student from Al Manara who needs physics support usually needs it because of the mathematics underneath it, and the sciences share enough method that one tutor can often cover two. These are the subjects most often requested alongside IB physics in this part of Jumeirah.

Physics

DP Higher and Standard Level

Three written papers plus the scientific investigation. Marks go missing in uncertainty treatment, in the extended-response questions on Paper 2 where command terms are ignored, and in the optional topic on Paper 3 that schools teach last and revise least.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual hidden cause of a physics problem. Calculus, logarithms and the manipulation of algebraic expressions appear inside physics questions without warning, and a student weak on AA content loses physics marks that look like physics errors.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics and modelling content maps directly onto the data analysis in the scientific investigation. AI students taking Physics HL need deliberate work on the algebraic side, which their own course does not drill to the same depth.

Chemistry

DP Higher and Standard Level

Shares the quantitative method and the uncertainty rules with physics, which makes a combined booking efficient. Energetics and kinetics in particular use the same graph-reading and gradient skills as mechanics.

Biology

DP Higher and Standard Level

Chosen alongside physics by students aiming at biomedical engineering or medicine. The statistical treatment in the biology investigation is more demanding than most students expect, and that is where tutoring hours convert fastest.

Design Technology

DP Higher and Standard Level

Overlaps with physics in materials, structures and energy. Students taking both can usually reuse their understanding of stress, strain and efficiency across the two courses if someone points out the connection.

Computer Science

DP Higher and Standard Level

Logic gates, binary representation and the computational thinking topics sit close to the digital content in physics. HL computer science students taking physics tend to be strong on method and weak on written explanation.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

DP Higher and Standard Level

Biomechanics draws on the same force and momentum analysis as DP physics. Students who switch from physics to this subject mid-DP1 need the transition handled carefully, because the assessment structure is not equivalent.

MYP Sciences

MYP Years 1-5

The four-criterion model rewards investigation design and reflection. Preparing a Year 11 student for DP1 physics means adding the quantitative fluency the criteria do not test: unit conversion, rearrangement and significant figures under time pressure.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Six topic areas across two theory papers plus a practical component. Extended candidates lose most marks on electromagnetic induction and on the longer calculations in Paper 4, where working is required and rarely shown.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1

Single tier

Two papers, no tiering, with the content split across forces and motion, electricity, waves, energy, magnetism, radioactivity and astrophysics. The astrophysics and radioactivity sections are routinely under-taught and are cheap marks to recover.

Theory of Knowledge

DP core

Physics students often find the TOK essay harder than the physics. The exhibition and essay reward precise use of knowledge claims, and a science-leaning student usually needs help converting a good instinct into the structure the assessment rewards.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

There are three ways an Al Manara family can realistically buy physics support, and the right one depends on the commute direction and on how much of the Diploma is still ahead. All three run live online, one-to-one unless stated.

The fixed weekday slot

One session a week at the same time, booked against your child's actual door time rather than a round hour. For a coastward family that usually means 4:45pm or 5pm; for an inland one, 5:15pm or later. The slot is held for the term, which matters more than it sounds: a floating booking is the one that gets skipped during an assessment week.

  • Same tutor, same time, held across the term
  • Scheduled from the school finish time, not a generic evening
  • Session notes and the next week's practice set sent the same evening
  • Works best started in DP1 rather than in the final two terms

Paper-focused blocks

A short run of sessions aimed at one component. Paper 1 technique, Paper 2 extended response, or the Paper 3 optional topic the school taught last. Each block ends with a timed paper marked against the published criteria and returned with the mark scheme reasoning written out, so the next block starts from evidence rather than impression.

  • Four to six sessions on a single component
  • Timed paper at the end, marked with the criteria cited
  • Useful for a student whose grade is stuck for a reason nobody has named
  • Can run alongside, not instead of, the weekly slot

Scientific investigation supervision

Process coaching on the internally assessed task: choosing a research question that can actually be answered, planning a method that generates enough data, and handling uncertainties properly. The tutor questions, reviews and feeds back; the student does the work and submits their own. That boundary is explained in full further down this page.

  • Research question narrowed until it is answerable
  • Method reviewed for data quantity and control of variables
  • Uncertainty and error analysis taught, never supplied
  • Written feedback the student acts on themselves

Sibling scheduling

Two children in the same Al Manara household on different programmes almost never share a slot, because an MYP student is home an hour before a Diploma student at the same school. Booking them back to back from the later door time wastes the earlier child's best hour. Booked separately, the MYP session takes the 4pm window and the Diploma session takes 5:15pm.

  • MYP and IGCSE students use the earlier slot
  • Diploma students take the later one
  • Different tutors where the subject match requires it
  • One point of contact for scheduling across both

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Manara

01

What time a physics session can actually start in Al Manara

  • Coastward schools: usable physics window 4:45pm to 6:15pm
  • Inland schools: usable physics window 5:15pm to 6:45pm
  • Activity days remove one or two afternoons a week from the window
  • Friday afternoons work for longer sessions and paper practice

A physics session in Al Manara can start at 4:45pm if the school run is coastward and at 5:15pm if it crosses Sheikh Zayed Road. That is the whole answer, and it is the single most useful fact on this page, because almost every tutoring arrangement that collapses in this neighbourhood collapses on timing rather than on teaching.

The arithmetic is simple and nobody does it. School ends between 2:50pm and 3:20pm depending on the school and the year group. A bus with multiple stops adds twenty to forty minutes, and a parent collection adds whatever the Al Wasl Road or Al Barsha interchange queue is doing that afternoon. Then there is the genuinely necessary gap: a Diploma student who walks in at 4:25pm and sits down for physics at 4:30pm will spend the first twenty minutes of a paid hour being tired in front of a stranger.

The table below is built from the two commute directions rather than from an average, because the average is useless here. A coastward family and an inland family living two streets apart have completely different evenings. The right-hand column is the earliest slot that has a reasonable chance of surviving a full term, not the earliest slot that is technically possible.

One further adjustment matters during the winter sports season. Several of the schools in both clusters run after-school activities until 4:30pm or 5pm two days a week, which removes those days from the physics window entirely. It is better to book one reliable session a week than two that are each cancelled monthly.

Diploma physics as the school week actually delivers it

  • Paper 1: multiple choice and data analysis, no extended writing
  • Paper 2: structured and extended response, where command terms decide marks
  • Paper 3: the optional topic, taught last and revised least
  • The scientific investigation is submitted long before the papers are sat

Diploma Physics is assessed by three written papers and one internally assessed scientific investigation. Paper 1 is multiple choice plus data analysis, Paper 2 is structured and extended response, and Paper 3 covers the optional material the school has selected. The internal task carries a fixed share of the final grade at both levels, which means a student can lose a grade boundary on a piece of work submitted months before the papers are sat.

What the published course outline does not show is the order a school delivers it in, and that order is what creates most tutoring problems. Mechanics is taught first, in DP1, when students are still adjusting to the Diploma workload. Electricity and magnetism arrive in the second and third terms. The optional topic is usually taught last, often in the final term of DP2, compressed into a few weeks because the calendar has run out. The result is predictable: the material students know best is the material they met when they were least able to learn it, and the material they met most recently is the material they have practised least.

For a student from Al Manara this has a scheduling consequence. The useful time to work on mechanics and uncertainties is DP1, when the content is live in class and there is room in the week. The useful time to work on the optional topic is the term it is taught, not the revision window, because by then everything is competing with everything. Families who start physics support in DP2 are usually paying to rebuild DP1 foundations while DP2 content arrives on top, and that is twice the work for the same grade movement.

Higher Level adds depth rather than new themes, and the extra teaching hours go mostly into harder quantitative treatment. A Standard Level student who can rearrange an equation and read a gradient is in reasonable shape. A Higher Level student needs to do that under time pressure, across multi-step problems, while tracking units and significant figures, and the gap between those two states is where most of the Higher Level tutoring hours in this neighbourhood go.

03

Where Al Manara physics students lose marks, topic by topic

  • Uncertainty propagation taught as procedure, not judgement
  • Command terms answered in one register instead of five
  • Paper 3 option met late and never practised under time
  • Mathematics gaps presenting as physics gaps

Three patterns account for most of the lost marks in Diploma physics scripts from this part of Dubai, and none of them is 'not understanding physics'. The first is uncertainty treatment. Students can quote the rules for propagating absolute and percentage uncertainties and still not apply them to their own data, because the rules were taught as a procedure and never as a judgement about how much a measurement can be trusted. In the scientific investigation this costs marks directly. On Paper 1 data-analysis questions it costs marks quietly.

The second is command terms on Paper 2. 'State', 'describe', 'explain', 'discuss' and 'justify' each carry a different expectation about how much reasoning has to be written down, and students who answer every one of them in the same register lose marks on half. An explanation that stops at the correct physical quantity, without the causal step connecting it to the observed effect, reads as complete to the student and incomplete to the mark scheme. This is the single most recoverable category of loss in the subject, and it is recoverable in weeks rather than months.

The third is the optional topic on Paper 3. Because it is taught late and quickly, students arrive at the paper with a shallow version of the material and no bank of worked problems. A Higher Level student who has done ten past-paper questions on the option is in a very different position from one who has read the textbook chapter twice. The fix is unglamorous: timed questions on the option, marked properly, from the term it is taught rather than from April.

Underneath all three sits a mathematics problem that presents as a physics problem. Logarithmic scales, exponential decay, small-angle approximations and the manipulation of compound fractions appear inside physics questions and are assumed knowledge. A student taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation alongside Physics HL meets several of these in physics before meeting them in maths. Naming that out loud usually changes a parent's view of what the tutoring is for.

04

Standard Level against Higher Level, component by component

Parents in Al Manara ask about the level choice more often than about any single topic, usually in DP1 when a 4 appears on a Higher Level report. The honest answer is that the decision should be made on the university target and on the student's quantitative fluency, not on the current grade, because the current grade in the first term of DP1 reflects adjustment as much as ability.

The practical differences are set out below. Both levels sit three papers and the scientific investigation, and the core content overlaps heavily. What changes is depth, time, and the proportion of questions that require more than one step. Higher Level questions more often ask a student to combine two relationships they were taught separately, which is a different skill from knowing each relationship well.

The university angle is worth checking properly rather than assuming. An engineering or physical-sciences offer from a UK or North American university frequently specifies Higher Level physics or an equivalent, and dropping to Standard Level in DP2 can close a route that looked open in DP1. Medicine is the opposite case: chemistry and biology usually matter more, and Standard Level physics is often sufficient. Ministry of Education equivalency for UAE universities is a separate process again, described further down, and no published IB points threshold for it should be taken on trust from a tutoring website, including this one.

The table below compares the two levels on the dimensions that affect tutoring hours. The right-hand column is the practical consequence for an Al Manara family budgeting a weekly slot across two years rather than a crash course in DP2.

The hour that has to come from somewhere: homework arithmetic

  • Let the session absorb the week's physics homework rather than adding to it
  • Ninety minutes at the weekend beats two rushed weekday hours for paper technique
  • Tell the tutor what the school has set, every week
  • Protect one evening with nothing scheduled on it

A Diploma student from Al Manara has a finite evening, and adding a physics session to it means something else moves. Pretending otherwise is how a good tutoring plan turns into a tired child. It is worth doing the arithmetic once, openly, before the first booking.

Take an inland commute. Door time 4:25pm. A reasonable restart is 5:15pm after food and a break. Six Diploma subjects generate homework, and in DP2 the scientific investigation, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge generate more. Two to three hours of work is a normal weekday load at this stage, which takes the evening to around 8:15pm with no physics session in it. Insert a sixty-minute session and either the evening runs to 9:15pm or an hour of homework does not happen.

The resolution most Al Manara families land on is to let the session replace homework rather than sit on top of it, and to be explicit with the tutor about that. If the week's physics homework is a problem set, the session works through it and the student finishes the remainder independently. If the week's physics homework is reading, the session replaces it entirely and the reading is caught up at the weekend. This only works if the tutor knows what the school has actually set, which is why the session notes go both ways.

The other resolution is to use the weekend properly. Friday and Saturday allow a ninety-minute session with a timed paper inside it, which is worth more than two weekday hours for exam technique. Families on the inland run in particular find that one weekend session and one short weekday check-in survives a term better than two weekday hours ever does.

06

What physics support costs in this market, and what the travel premium buys

  • Ask for the rate per sixty minutes, not per session
  • Ask whether marking a past paper is billed inside the hour
  • Ask for the cancellation window in writing before a term is paid
  • Ask to see one marked script before committing

Start at the bottom of the market rather than the top, because that is where most families start and it is where the money is most often wasted. A university student tutoring online advertises from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour: EdFlik publishes rates from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to AED 52. At that price a tutor can supervise homework competently. What they generally cannot do is mark a Higher Level Paper 2 extended response against the published criteria and explain why a correct-sounding answer scored two out of four, which is the specific thing a stuck physics grade needs.

A qualified subject tutor working online sits in the AED 150 to AED 300 band; Unitors quotes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Subject specialists in IB, IGCSE and A Level run from roughly AED 200 to AED 450 and beyond, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table showing AED 200 to AED 450 and above. A named or examiner-branded tutor at the top of the market reaches AED 500 to AED 650, with BartyED publishing AED 650. Those figures are the providers' own published rates, not IB Gram's, and they were read in October 2026.

The interesting number is the in-home band, because it is the one an Al Manara parent is implicitly comparing against. Visiting one-to-one tuition in Dubai is quoted at roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with Bestimate showing AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors asking AED 200 to AED 500. Monthly packages seen in this market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour visiting sessions. The gap between those two monthly figures is roughly the cost of a car crossing Sheikh Zayed Road twice a week. It buys travel, not teaching, and it narrows the tutor pool to whoever is willing to make the journey at 5pm.

What a parent can verify independently is worth more than any of this. Ask for the rate in AED per sixty minutes, ask whether marking time is inside or outside that hour, ask what happens to a session cancelled with four hours' notice, and ask to see one piece of marked work before paying for a term. Those four questions separate the bands faster than any price list, and they cost nothing.

07

The scientific investigation, and the line a tutor does not cross

  • Research question narrowed by questioning, never chosen for the student
  • Uncertainty analysis taught on a different experiment, then applied by the student
  • Drafts read and marked against the criteria, never edited to completion
  • The ownership test: can your child explain the method without notes?

The internally assessed scientific investigation is the student's own work, and that is not a formality. IB academic-honesty rules treat work that is not a student's own as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, not on the tutor who helped. Any provider offering to supply a finished investigation is selling an expulsion risk. One agency found in the research for these pages sells completed internal assessments outright; that is the clearest possible signal to walk away.

What a tutor may legitimately do is substantial. They can interrogate a research question until it is narrow enough to be answerable with the equipment available. They can point out that a proposed method will generate five data points when the criteria reward a range wide enough to show a trend. They can teach uncertainty propagation on a worked example that is not the student's own experiment. They can read a draft and say that the evaluation section describes limitations without explaining their effect on the conclusion. They can mark against the published criteria and explain the gap between a mark and the one above it.

What they must not do is write a sentence of it, choose the research question for the student, process the data, or edit the text into its final form. The practical test an Al Manara parent can apply at home is ownership: can your child explain, without notes, why that research question, why that method, and what the uncertainty on the key measurement actually means? If the answer is no, the work has been done to them rather than with them, regardless of what the mark looks like.

The same boundary applies to the Extended Essay if it is being written in physics, and to the Theory of Knowledge essay. Process coaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own draft are all legitimate and all useful. Supplying content is not. Every session on an internally assessed task under this arrangement ends with the student holding the next action, in writing, and the tutor holding none of it.

08

The year as a physics student in Al Manara experiences it

The Diploma year has a shape, and tutoring that ignores it wastes money in predictable places. Autumn term in DP1 is the cheapest time to buy physics help and the time families are least likely to buy it, because no grade has gone wrong yet. Mechanics and the measurement-and-uncertainty material are both live in class, and fixing them while they are live costs a fraction of rebuilding them in DP2.

The winter of DP1 brings the first serious internal assessments and, at most of the schools in both Al Manara clusters, the first report that uses predicted-grade language. That report is a weak diagnostic on its own: a 4 in physics tells you the grade and not the cause, and the cause is usually one of the three loss patterns described above. A single diagnostic session on a marked script is more informative than a term of general support.

Spring and early summer of DP1 is scientific investigation season at most schools, running into DP2 for some. This is the block where process coaching earns its keep, and it is also the block where the honesty boundary matters most. Ramadan falls inside this window in the current years, and session timing shifts with it: post-Iftar slots work well for older students and badly for anyone who has to be up for a 7am school bus, so it is worth agreeing the Ramadan pattern in advance rather than cancelling four weeks of sessions.

DP2 runs towards the May session that UAE schools sit, and the autumn and winter terms before it are when option-topic work and timed paper practice have to happen. For IGCSE siblings in the same household the rhythm is different: Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sits in May or June and again in November, with the November 2026 timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026 and results reaching students in January. Always check the live official timetable rather than a restated date, including the one in this sentence. No specific IB session or results date is published on this page, because the IB's own site could not be verified directly for it.

KHDA, the permit, and who is actually marking your child's work

  • Read the science paragraphs of the inspection report, not just the band
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • No published fine schedule exists, so no figure should be quoted at you
  • A teacher tutoring their own enrolled students is a rule to avoid, not a selling point

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a band from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula in 2024-25, and the authority confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package.

An inspection band is a whole-school judgement, and reading it as a physics judgement is a mistake Al Manara parents make regularly. A school rated Outstanding can have a physics department running on supply cover for a term; a school rated Good can have a long-serving Higher Level teacher with a deep bank of option resources. The report text beneath the band is where the subject-level detail sits, and it is published. Reading the science paragraphs of your own school's most recent report is a better use of twenty minutes than comparing two bands.

On the tutor side, the position is clearer than most websites make it. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you. The application route is MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service, with a stated two-working-day completion time.

A separate rule matters in Abu Dhabi and is worth knowing even from Dubai, because families move: ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar bar. The marketing line 'your child's own teacher, privately' is one to decline. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, MoHRE, Ministry of Education, IB or Cambridge accreditation, approval or partnership, and any provider claiming otherwise should be asked for the permit or centre number.

Starting, and what happens when the slot you need is full

  • Send a marked script, the term calendar, and the Paper 3 option before the trial
  • Judge the trial on whether the loss pattern gets named
  • 5pm to 6:30pm Gulf Standard Time is the most contested slot in the UAE
  • Raise a bad match after session two, not session eight

The useful first step is not a booking, it is a marked script. Send the most recent marked physics paper, the school's assessment calendar for the term, and the name of the Paper 3 optional topic the cohort is following. Those three items let a tutor say something specific in the first session instead of spending it on introductions, and they are the difference between a diagnostic hour and a pleasant one.

Then the trial lesson. One lesson, before any payment, with no card details taken and one per family. The point of it is not to be impressed. The point is to see whether the tutor can look at your child's marked script and name the loss pattern, and whether your child will talk to them. A tutor who spends the trial describing their own experience has used it badly.

Availability is where most providers stop being honest, so here is the real position. Physics specialists who can mark a Higher Level script properly are not evenly spread across the clock. The 5pm to 6:30pm Gulf Standard Time window is the most requested hour in the UAE, and for a specific optional topic at Higher Level the match may take several days rather than an afternoon. When no specialist is free in the slot an Al Manara family needs, there are three honest options: take a different slot, take a weekend session instead of a weekday one, or wait for the right match. Being handed a general science tutor to fill the gap is the outcome worth refusing, and it is the one that quietly happens elsewhere.

If the match is wrong, say so after the second session rather than the eighth. The useful signal is not whether your child liked the hour; it is whether the work coming back is specific. Session notes that name a topic, a command term and a next action are working. Notes that say the session went well are not. IB Gram does not sell in-home visits anywhere in the UAE, so what you are buying is the teaching and the evidence it produces, delivered over live video into an Al Manara afternoon that already has enough traffic in it.

Where we tutor

Al Manara and the districts either side of it

Al Manara is small, and the schools its families use sit in neighbouring districts rather than inside it. These are the areas that define the two commute directions, with what each means for a physics session booked on a weekday afternoon.

Umm Suqeim

The coastward destination for most Al Manara school runs. Raffles World Academy, Raffles International School and Kings' School Dubai sit here, and the afternoon queue on Jumeirah Beach Road is what pushes a 3:05pm finish to a 3:45pm arrival.

Al Safa

Immediately east along Al Wasl Road. Jumeirah Baccalaureate School draws a steady number of Al Manara Diploma students, and the run is short enough that a 4:30pm session start is realistic rather than optimistic.

Jumeirah 3

North of Al Manara towards the beach. Families here share the same Umm Suqeim and Al Safa schools and the same afternoon timing, so the slot pattern on this page applies with no adjustment.

Al Wasl

The corridor that gives Al Manara its eastern boundary. Students crossing it towards Al Safa and Jumeirah 1 schools face the shortest commute of any direction, and often the earliest usable session slot.

Umm Al Sheif

Directly south-west, with Horizon International School on its edge. The run is under four kilometres but crosses two signalled junctions that back up badly between 3pm and 4pm on weekdays.

Al Barsha

The inland destination across Sheikh Zayed Road. Dubai American Academy and Kings' School Al Barsha sit here, and bus routes serving Al Manara from Al Barsha are the ones that most often deliver a student after 4:30pm.

Al Sufouh

GEMS Wellington International School is on this stretch. The journey is short in kilometres and unpredictable in minutes, because it depends on which Sheikh Zayed Road exit the bus uses.

Jumeirah 1 and 2

North-east along the coast. Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira takes students from this direction, and the finish time there is early enough that a late-afternoon slot works even on a slow traffic day.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Reclaimed coastal developments east of Al Manara with no secondary schools of their own. Families living here use the same Umm Suqeim and Al Safa cluster, with a few minutes more on the return leg.

Palm Jumeirah

Reachable from Al Manara but rarely part of the daily run for Diploma physics students, because the schools on the Palm serve younger year groups and the bridge queue makes a weekday session start before 5pm difficult.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Manara

The coastward run: Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Jumeirah

Short journeys, early finishes, and the cluster where a 4:30pm or 4:45pm physics session is realistic. Diploma Physics is taught at several of these, and the Paper 3 optional topic is not the same at all of them, which is the first question worth asking before a tutor is matched.

  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Horizon International School, Umm Al Sheif
  • Raffles International School, Umm Suqeim
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira

The inland run: across Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

Longer and less predictable. Students on these routes are typically home between 4:15pm and 4:40pm, so the usable physics window opens around 5:15pm and closes before homework does. Booking the earliest slot on this side almost always fails by the second week.

  • Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School, Al Barsha
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha

Schools are named here as the context an Al Manara family is already living in; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the evidence first

A marked physics script, the school's assessment dates for the term, and the Paper 3 optional topic the cohort is following. Three items, five minutes, and they convert the first session from an introduction into a diagnosis. A photograph of the marked paper is enough; the examiner comments matter more than the total.

  2. 02

Agree the slot against the real door time

Tell us the school and whether the run is coastward or inland, and the slot is set from that rather than from a round hour. A coastward family usually lands on 4:45pm, an inland one on 5:15pm or later. Activity afternoons are taken out of the pattern before anything is booked.

  3. 03

Match on the component, not the subject

Physics is matched by what your child is actually losing marks on: uncertainty treatment, Paper 2 extended response, or a specific Paper 3 option. The match takes longer than a general science booking and is the reason the first session has something to say.

  4. 04

    Take the trial lesson

One lesson, no payment, no card details, one per family. Watch for two things: whether the tutor can name the loss pattern from the marked script, and whether your child talks. If either is missing, the match is wrong and saying so costs nothing at that stage.

  5. 05

Hold the slot and read the notes

The session runs weekly at the same time, with notes the same evening naming the topic covered, the error pattern seen and the next action for the student. Those notes are the measurement. If they stop being specific, the arrangement has drifted and is worth resetting.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The slot is built from your commute, not ours

Al Manara has two school-run directions with forty-five minutes between their door times. Sessions are scheduled from your child's actual arrival time, which is why the booking survives past the third week instead of becoming the thing that gets cancelled during assessment season.

Physics matched by paper and option

The Paper 3 optional topic differs between schools in the same cluster. Matching on it means a tutor who has taught and marked that material rather than one who will read the chapter alongside your child. It takes longer to arrange and it is the whole point.

Marked scripts with the reasoning written out

Work comes back marked against the published criteria with the gap between the awarded mark and the one above explained in words. A grade on its own is information your child already had. The explanation is what changes the next attempt.

AED figures attributed, never invented

Every rate on this page is a provider's own published figure with the provider named and the reading date stated. IB Gram does not publish a rate card here, and no statistic appears on this page without its source, its date and what it counts.

The honesty boundary stated, not implied

On the scientific investigation, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, the tutor questions, reviews and marks. The student writes, chooses and submits. That boundary is written down because the consequence of crossing it falls on your child.

Availability disclosed before you pay

If no Higher Level physics specialist is free in the slot you need, you are told that and offered a different slot, a weekend session or a wait. A general science tutor is not quietly substituted to fill the gap.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Manara: your questions answered

What time can an IB physics session realistically start for an Al Manara family?+

It depends entirely on which direction the school run goes. If your child is at Raffles World Academy, Kings' School Dubai or Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, the day ends around 3pm and the door time in Al Manara is 3:30pm to 4pm, so a 4:30pm or 4:45pm start works across a full term. If the run crosses Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Barsha or Al Sufouh, door time is 4:15pm to 4:40pm and the earliest slot that survives is 5:15pm or later. Booking the inland family into a 4:30pm slot is the most common reason a physics arrangement collapses by week three.

Which schools do Al Manara students actually travel to for the IB Diploma?+

Al Manara has no IB school within its own boundary, so every Diploma student commutes. The coastward cluster is Raffles World Academy and Kings' School Dubai in Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in Al Safa, and Horizon International School on the Umm Al Sheif edge. The inland cluster, across Sheikh Zayed Road, includes Dubai American Academy and Dubai International Academy in Al Barsha and GEMS Wellington International School in Al Sufouh. These schools are named as context for the commute; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and none endorses this page.

Does it matter which Paper 3 optional topic my child's school teaches?+

It matters more than almost anything else in the match. Paper 3 examines the optional material a school selects, and schools in the same Dubai cluster do not all choose the same one. A tutor matched on subject alone can help with Paper 1 and Paper 2 and will be reading the option chapter at the same pace as your child. Ask the physics teacher which option the cohort is following before the first session is booked. It is one email and it changes who the right tutor is.

My daughter is in DP1 and came home with a 4 in Higher Level physics. Is that a level problem?+

Usually not, and the first-term DP1 report is a poor basis for the decision. A 4 at that stage most often reflects adjustment to Diploma workload plus one of three specific loss patterns: uncertainty treatment applied as a procedure, command terms answered in a single register, or a mathematics gap presenting as a physics gap. A diagnostic session on the marked script will name which one. Decide the level question on the university target and on quantitative fluency, in the second term, with a marked paper in front of you rather than a grade.

Is there any point in physics tutoring over video when so much of the course is practical?+

The practical skills the Diploma assesses are mostly analytical rather than manual. The scientific investigation is marked on the quality of the research question, the method's ability to generate meaningful data, the handling of uncertainty and the evaluation, and all four can be taught and reviewed over a shared screen. What video cannot do is hand your child a micrometer, and it does not need to: the school provides the laboratory. Screen sharing on a marked script and a spreadsheet of the student's own data is the format most of this work actually needs.

How much does an IB physics tutor cost in Dubai, and what should we expect to pay?+

Published market rates, read in October 2026, run from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for a student tutor online, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor, and AED 200 to AED 450 or more for an IB specialist, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Visiting one-to-one tuition in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to AED 500. Those are the providers' own figures, not IB Gram's. Ask for a rate per sixty minutes and whether marking is billed inside the hour.

What does the extra cost of a visiting tutor in this area actually buy?+

Travel, and a smaller pool to choose from. Monthly packages in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visiting sessions, and the difference is a car crossing Al Wasl Road or Sheikh Zayed Road twice a week at 5pm. It does not buy better physics teaching, and it narrows the choice to whoever will make the journey. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India.

Can a physics tutor help with the scientific investigation without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can question a research question until it is answerable, point out that a method will produce too few data points, teach uncertainty propagation on a different worked example, read a draft and mark it against the published criteria, and explain the gap to the next mark. A tutor cannot choose the question, process the data, write any part of it or edit it to completion. The test at home is ownership: your child should be able to explain the question, the method and the key uncertainty without notes.

We are starting in DP2. Is it too late for physics support to change anything?+

It is not too late, but the work is different and more expensive in hours. DP2 support usually has to rebuild DP1 foundations, chiefly rearrangement fluency and uncertainty handling, while DP2 content and the option arrive on top. The fastest returns in that position come from Paper 2 command-term technique and from timed questions on the Paper 3 option, both of which move marks in weeks. What DP2 cannot recover cheaply is a weak scientific investigation already submitted, because that mark is fixed before the papers are sat.

How many physics sessions a week should an Al Manara student have?+

One, held reliably, beats two that get cancelled. The evening arithmetic in this neighbourhood is tight: an inland commute leaves roughly three usable hours between 5:15pm and bedtime, and six Diploma subjects already fill them. One weekly session that absorbs the week's physics homework rather than adding to it is sustainable across two years. Where a student needs more, a ninety-minute weekend session with a timed paper inside it is worth more for exam technique than a second rushed weekday hour.

Can one tutor cover physics and mathematics for the same student?+

Often, and it is frequently the right arrangement. A large share of lost physics marks in Diploma scripts come from mathematics: logarithmic scales, exponential decay, small-angle approximations and compound algebra appear inside physics questions as assumed knowledge. A tutor who teaches both can fix the cause rather than the symptom, which matters particularly for a student taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation alongside Physics at Higher Level, since several of those tools arrive in physics before they arrive in maths.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a permit, and how do we check?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so treat any quoted amount with suspicion. Applications go through MoHRE's private tutor licensing service. Ask a tutor directly whether they hold a current permit.

What does a KHDA Outstanding rating tell us about the physics teaching at a school?+

Less than parents assume. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a band from Outstanding to Very Weak, but that band is a whole-school judgement covering leadership, provision and outcomes across every subject and phase. A school rated Outstanding can have a physics department on supply cover; a school rated Good can have a long-serving Higher Level specialist. The subject-level detail sits in the report text beneath the band, which KHDA publishes. Reading the science paragraphs of your own school's latest report is more useful than comparing two bands.

Can physics sessions move during Ramadan or the school run changes mid-year?+

Yes, and it is better to agree the pattern in advance than to cancel four weeks. Post-Iftar slots work well for older Diploma students and badly for anyone catching an early school bus, so the sensible Ramadan pattern is usually a shorter session earlier in the afternoon, or a shift to the weekend. Mid-year changes to the school run matter too: a bus route change or a move from the coastward to the inland cluster shifts the door time by up to forty-five minutes, and the slot should move with it.

What happens if no Higher Level physics specialist is free in the slot we need?+

You are told. The 5pm to 6:30pm Gulf Standard Time window is the most requested hour across the UAE, and for a specific Paper 3 option at Higher Level a match can take several days rather than an afternoon. The honest options are a different weekday slot, a weekend session, or waiting for the right person. What should not happen is a general science tutor substituted quietly to fill the gap, which is the outcome worth refusing wherever it is offered.

Does an IB physics grade matter for Ministry of Education equivalency in the UAE?+

Equivalency is a separate process from school assessment, run by the Ministry of Education rather than by a school or a tutor. For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold should be published without being read on the Ministry's own site, and this page does not state one. Check the official channel directly.

Start with the marked script and the school finish time

An IB physics tutor in Al Manara is useful in proportion to how specific the first session is, and specificity comes from two things: a marked paper with the examiner's comments on it, and an honest answer about what time your child actually walks in the door. Send those, plus the Paper 3 optional topic the school is following, and the trial lesson can start with a diagnosis instead of an introduction. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time, from whichever slot your commute direction leaves open. If no specialist is free in that slot, you will be told so rather than offered a substitute.
