IB Physics Tutor in Al Barari

An IB physics tutor in Al Barari is usually wanted for one of two reasons: a Higher Level student who can do the maths but cannot write an explanation, or a Standard Level student whose investigation has stalled. Al Barari pupils commute out to several Dubailand schools, and physics specialists are scarce across the whole emirate rather than only here. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live over video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Barari

Physics is two separate problems wearing one name

Almost every IB physics difficulty is one of two things, and they need completely different tutoring. The first is mathematical: a student who cannot rearrange confidently, who loses track of units, or who treats a formula as a recipe rather than a relationship. The second is linguistic: a student who understands the physics perfectly and writes an answer that describes what happens instead of explaining why, and therefore scores two marks out of four.

The second problem is the more common one in Dubai and the less often diagnosed. Explanation questions in IB Physics carry a large share of the available marks and they are marked against reasoning, not against knowledge. A candidate who writes that the current increases has described the graph. A candidate who writes that the resistance falls because the temperature rise increases charge-carrier density, so for a fixed potential difference the current rises, has explained it. The physics is identical; the marks are not.

This matters in Al Barari for a practical reason. There is no school inside the community, so pupils commute out to the Dubailand and Nad Al Sheba belt, west towards Motor City and the Arabian Ranches, or across to Al Barsha South. Physics at Higher Level is taught in a minority of those schools, and the number of people in Dubai who teach it to examination standard and have an unused weekday evening within driving distance of a villa community off Al Ain Road is realistically zero. The scarcity is emirate-wide, not local.

The third thing worth establishing before you hire is the investigation. The scientific investigation is worth 20% of the physics grade and is marked out of 24 across four criteria. It is also the component students begin latest and the one a tutor can most usefully influence, because the decisions that determine the mark are made before any data exists: what is being varied, what is being controlled, and whether the measurement is actually precise enough to show the effect.

So this page sets out the paper structure and weightings, breaks the investigation down criterion by criterion with its marks, explains honestly how practical work is handled when lessons are online, and shows where explanation marks are lost topic by topic. It also compares Al Barari with the communities around it, because a proximity search is how most families start.

One fact stated plainly. IB Gram delivers physics tuition to Al Barari as live one-to-one lessons over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Physics teaching is a shared screen, a worked problem, a marked explanation question and a conversation about an investigation design, none of which requires anyone to be in the room.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics reaches Al Barari students by three routes and the first six sessions differ in each. These are the stages that matter, with what each one leaves unprepared.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Sciences assessed against four criteria, each out of eight, including inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating. Students from this route arrive in Diploma physics unusually comfortable with investigation design and unusually weak on algebraic execution, because the Middle Years Programme rewards the thinking and rarely drills the manipulation.

In the Dubailand belt several schools run the full IB continuum, so a meaningful share of Al Barari physics students come this way. The diagnostic question for them is not whether they can design an experiment but whether they can rearrange an equation under time pressure.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE physics into the Diploma

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 students arrive with solid content coverage and a habit of short-answer responses. The gap is extended explanation: IGCSE rewards a correct statement, the Diploma rewards a chain of reasoning. Students also meet calculus-adjacent treatment of rates and fields for the first time at Higher Level.

Most British-curriculum schools near Al Barari follow this route, and whether the student took Additional Mathematics alongside their IGCSEs is a strong predictor of how the first Diploma physics term goes, because the mathematics arrives faster than the physics does.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Two written papers plus the scientific investigation at both levels in the current guide. Higher Level extends the treatment of most topics rather than appending separate ones, which is why it cannot be handled by learning extra content at the end. Confirm current weightings and paper durations with your child's teacher.

UAE schools overwhelmingly enter candidates for the May session. No IB exam or results dates appear on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and publishing an unverified date a parent will act on is worse than publishing none. Confirm every date with the school's Diploma coordinator.

Physics as a university prerequisite

Engineering, physics and several medical and architecture routes expect Higher Level physics, frequently alongside Analysis and Approaches. The requirement is published by each university and varies by course and by year, so it should be read on the institution's own course page rather than inferred.

For a UAE university application the Ministry of Education's equivalency requirements apply in addition to the university's own. The British-track figures are published; no IB points threshold should be relied on unless read on the Ministry's own channel. IB Gram neither performs nor guarantees equivalency or attestation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the physics topics Al Barari families ask about, with where the explanation marks actually go. Content is rarely the whole problem; the reasoning attached to it usually is.

Mechanics and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, momentum and energy. The dominant loss is treating a graph as the answer: students report that velocity increases rather than reasoning from the resultant force. Momentum questions reward stating conservation explicitly before any calculation.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

Current, potential difference, resistance and circuit analysis. The reliable weak point in every cohort, because circuit reasoning requires holding three relationships together rather than recalling one. Internal resistance questions are where Higher Level candidates separate.

Fields

HL and SL, extended at HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields and the analogies between them. Higher Level treatment of potential and potential energy is the single most common reason a strong student requests help, because the sign conventions are unforgiving and the concepts are abstract.

Waves and oscillations

HL and SL

Wave behaviour, superposition, standing waves and simple harmonic motion. Phase relationships are where marks go, and the fix is drawing the displacement against time before attempting a verbal answer. Diffraction questions reward naming the condition rather than describing the pattern.

Thermal physics

HL and SL

Internal energy, specific heat capacity, latent heat and the ideal gas treatment. Students lose marks by conflating heat and temperature in written answers, which is a vocabulary problem with a mark consequence rather than a physics gap.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL, extended at HL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, mass defect and the photoelectric effect. Binding-energy calculations compound errors across several steps, so one early rounding decision survives to the final answer. The photoelectric effect rewards a precise statement of the threshold condition.

Energy production

HL and SL

Energy sources, efficiency and the physics of generation and transfer. Often under-revised because it feels descriptive, and it is a reliable source of accessible marks for a student who learns the efficiency arguments properly rather than in general terms.

Uncertainty and error analysis

HL and SL, examined and assessed internally

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and error bars on graphs. Examined in the papers and central to the investigation, and almost always under-taught. A few sessions here pays twice over.

Graph work and data analysis

HL and SL

Linearising relationships, gradients with meaning, intercepts and best-fit judgement. Students plot competently and then fail to state what the gradient physically represents, which is where the marks sit. Also the most transferable skill into the investigation.

Explanation and command terms

HL and SL, across every topic

'State', 'describe', 'explain', 'deduce' and 'discuss' carry different mark expectations. The highest-yield intervention available in IB physics is teaching a student to answer the verb, because it recovers marks in every topic at once rather than one topic at a time.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL, 20% of the grade

An individual investigation marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The mark is largely determined before any data exists, by whether the variable chosen can actually be measured precisely enough to show the effect being studied.

Mathematical technique for physics

HL and SL

Rearranging, indices, standard form, trigonometry in resolving vectors and, at Higher Level, the beginnings of calculus reasoning. A physics problem is frequently a mathematics problem in disguise, which is why a physics diagnostic has to test the algebra separately.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Barari families run IB physics with us, all live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. Physics rewards a rested student more than most subjects, because explanation writing is concentration work.

Weekly one-to-one through the term

One tutor, one protected slot, tracking the school's topic order so that each session consolidates rather than introduces. Physics is cumulative in its mathematics even where its topics are not, so a manipulation weakness caught in October does not become a fields problem in February.

  • Topic order follows the school's own scheme
  • Explanation questions marked and rewritten each week
  • Problem set between sessions, reviewed in the next
  • Written note the same evening after each lesson

Investigation coaching across a term

The investigation is 20% of the grade and the mark is largely set before data collection begins. Coaching runs across a term: design viability first, then uncertainty treatment, then structured feedback on the student's own drafts against the four criteria. The student writes every word and collects every measurement.

  • Design tested for measurability before any data
  • Uncertainty propagation taught properly, once
  • Feedback against the four criteria by mark allocation
  • Nothing written by the tutor, at any stage

Explanation-writing blocks before mocks

A short, targeted block aimed at the command terms rather than the content. Each session works through explanation questions from several topics, marked against the published criteria, until the student writes chains of reasoning by habit. This is the highest-yield intervention in physics because it recovers marks across every topic simultaneously.

  • Command terms taught explicitly: state, describe, explain, deduce
  • Answers marked and rewritten in the session
  • Drawn from across the syllabus, not one topic
  • Usually four to six sessions to change the habit

Holiday blocks for the mathematics underneath

Four or five sessions a week in a Dubai school break, aimed at the algebra, indices, standard form and vector resolution that physics assumes. Where a physics problem is really a mathematics problem, no amount of physics teaching fixes it, and a holiday block is the only realistic time to rebuild fluency.

  • Four to five sessions a week in school breaks
  • Targets manipulation, not physics content
  • Ramadan sessions move to afternoon or post-Iftar
  • Shorter sessions in preference to skipped weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barari

01

The papers, the weightings and where the time should go

The current IB Physics guide sets two written papers at each level plus the internally assessed scientific investigation. Paper 1 combines multiple-choice questions with a data-analysis section. Paper 2 is extended response. The investigation carries 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Confirm the exact weightings and durations for your child's cohort with their teacher or Diploma coordinator, because the IB revises subject guides and the current guide is the authority.

The structural point that matters for planning is where the marks are concentrated. The extended-response paper carries the largest single share, and it is where explanation marks live. That means the highest-value tutoring in physics is usually not more content teaching but deliberate practice at writing reasoning, because a student who scores poorly on extended response is losing marks in every topic simultaneously rather than in one.

The data-analysis section of Paper 1 is the second underrated area. It examines uncertainty, graph work, gradients with physical meaning and best-fit judgement — the same skills the investigation requires. A student who learns uncertainty propagation properly gains marks twice: once in the paper and once in the 20% component. Very few Dubai students arrive having been taught it systematically, because it tends to be covered alongside practicals rather than as a topic.

Higher Level differs from Standard Level by extension rather than addition in most topics. That has a specific consequence: you cannot prepare for Higher Level by learning the Standard Level course and then adding extra material at the end. The extension is woven through, which is why a Higher Level student who is behind needs more total hours than the same gap at Standard Level, usually about half again.

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

No competitor page in this market names a single investigation criterion or its mark allocation, which is remarkable given the component is worth a fifth of the grade. In the current science guides the individual scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria, each carrying 6 marks: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Confirm these with your child's teacher, since the IB revises its guides.

Research design carries 6 marks and is decided before any apparatus is touched. It rewards a clear research question, a methodology that can actually answer it, and explicit treatment of the independent, dependent and controlled variables. The commonest failure in Dubai schools is a question that cannot be answered with school equipment: the effect being studied is smaller than the measurement uncertainty, so the data shows nothing and no amount of later writing recovers it. That is why the viability conversation is the single most valuable hour a physics tutor spends.

Data analysis carries 6 marks and rewards correct processing, appropriate graphing and genuine treatment of uncertainty — error bars, propagation, and a statement of how uncertainty affects the conclusion. Conclusion carries 6 and rewards an answer to the stated research question, justified by the data and compared with accepted physics where relevant. Evaluation carries 6 and rewards identifying specific methodological weaknesses and proposing realistic improvements, not generic ones about human error.

Two practical conclusions. First, the two criteria students neglect, conclusion and evaluation, together carry 12 of the 24 marks and are the cheapest to improve, because they reward thinking rather than apparatus. Second, the whole thing is decided by the design. A student who starts in September with a measurable question has a straightforward route to a strong mark; a student who starts in February with an interesting question that cannot be measured has a problem no tutor can solve.

Practical physics when the tutor is on a screen

  • Practical work and the investigation are supervised at school
  • Design viability is the highest-value tutoring on this component
  • Uncertainty and graph work are better on a shared screen
  • Draft feedback is identical in any delivery format
  • A tutor cannot replace laboratory familiarity, and we say so

This deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Practical work in IB Physics happens at school. Your child's school has the apparatus, runs the laboratory sessions, and supervises the investigation. A tutor, in any delivery format, is not running experiments for a student, and an in-home tutor arriving at an Al Barari villa with a trolley and a light gate is not what in-home tutoring looks like either.

What a tutor genuinely contributes to practical physics divides into three things, all of which work on a screen. The first is design: whether the proposed variable can be measured well enough, what the controls should be, how many values are needed and over what range. That is a conversation, and it is the part that determines the research design mark. The second is uncertainty and data treatment: propagating uncertainties, plotting with error bars, deciding what a gradient means physically, judging best fit. That is worked on shared data, which is better on a screen than over a dining table because both parties see the same spreadsheet and the same graph.

The third is the writing. The investigation is a written document assessed against four criteria, and the difference between 14 and 20 out of 24 is almost entirely in how the conclusion and evaluation are argued. A tutor reads the student's own draft, says what is not working and why, and the student rewrites. That is identical work in any format.

Where a screen genuinely loses something is in exam-board practical skills questions that assume laboratory familiarity, and in the intuition a student builds from handling apparatus. The honest answer is that the school provides that and a tutor cannot substitute for it. What a tutor can do is make sure the student knows what to look for before the laboratory session, which is more useful than it sounds, because most students arrive at a practical with no plan and spend the session following instructions.

04

Where physics marks are actually lost

Mark a physics paper rather than asking the student and the same patterns appear in almost every cohort. Four of them account for a large share of the lost marks, and three can be fixed in weeks.

The first is answering the wrong verb. 'State' wants a sentence, 'describe' wants what happens, 'explain' wants why, and 'deduce' wants a conclusion drawn from given information. Students who write everything they know satisfy none of them, and they lose marks in every topic rather than one. Teaching the command terms explicitly is the highest-yield intervention available in this subject, which is why it appears as a tutoring mode on this page rather than as an afterthought.

The second is unit and significant-figure discipline, which bleeds a mark at a time across an entire paper and concentrates in the compound-unit topics: fields, thermal physics, nuclear binding energy. The third is unshown method in multi-step calculation. Mark schemes award credit for steps, so a correct final figure with nothing written scores below a wrong figure with sound working, and the students most affected are the fastest ones.

The fourth is genuinely conceptual and takes longer: the gap between being able to use an equation and understanding the relationship it expresses. A student who can calculate a field strength but cannot say why the potential is negative has a conceptual gap, and it shows up as inconsistency — strong on calculation questions, weak on the explanation questions that carry the larger share of the extended-response paper. That is a term of work rather than a fortnight, and identifying it early is why a diagnostic session separates calculation questions from explanation questions deliberately.

05

Physics tutor supply here against the communities next door

A proximity search is how most families begin, so here is what it returns in this part of Dubai. For Middle Years sciences, local supply across the Dubailand communities is reasonable. For Diploma physics at Standard Level it is thinner. For Higher Level physics, and particularly for investigation coaching and uncertainty treatment, it is close to non-existent in any of these communities — not because Al Barari is poorly served but because the specialism is narrow and the total number of such teachers in Dubai is small.

Physics is more affected by this than mathematics. A competent mathematician can teach most IGCSE and Standard Level Diploma mathematics. A competent scientist cannot necessarily teach Higher Level physics fields and quantum topics to examination standard, because the content is specific and the explanation conventions are learned from marking. Add a distance filter and a fixed evening slot and the pool empties.

What differs between these communities is the clock rather than the supply. A Nad Al Sheba pupil can begin at half past four; an Al Barari or Mudon pupil realistically begins at five or later after a commute. Physics is particularly badly suited to a late, tired slot, because explanation writing is concentration work rather than repetition. A student who can do physics at ten in the morning may genuinely be unable to do it at seven in the evening, and that is a scheduling problem families routinely mistake for a comprehension problem.

In-home rates rise with distance from the centre while the available pool does not improve, so the further out you live the worse the value of a proximity search. Market in-home rates run roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The premium buys presence, and in physics presence is the component least needed, because the work is a shared screen, a marked answer and a spreadsheet.

What physics tutoring costs in Dubai, and the per-component view

The market bands are published by competitors and worth knowing before you take any quote. Read in October 2026: EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, BartyED at AED 650. Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Monthly estimates run AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

The more useful way to read those numbers in physics is per component, because the components reward tutoring very unevenly. Investigation coaching is the best-value block available: the component is 20% of the grade, the mark is largely set by design decisions, and six to eight sessions spread across a term can move it substantially. At the specialist band that is a few thousand dirhams against a fifth of a subject grade.

Explanation-writing blocks are the second best value, because the gain applies across every topic at once. Four to six sessions aimed at command terms, with answers marked and rewritten in the session, changes how a student writes for the rest of the course. Content teaching is the least efficient per hour, not because it does not work but because it addresses one topic at a time and there are many topics.

IB Gram publishes no hourly rate on this page, because the right figure depends on level, how many weeks remain and whether the work is content, investigation or technique. What we publish is the market band so any quote can be checked, and the first lesson is free so you can test whether the tutor actually knows the course before any money moves. Ask them to name the four investigation criteria and their marks; that question sorts this market quickly.

Honesty, permits and what we will not supply

  • The student writes every word of the investigation
  • Design viability and uncertainty teaching are the legitimate high-value help
  • We do not distribute IB papers, mark schemes or boundary tables
  • No examiner claims we cannot evidence, and no grade guarantees
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years

The investigation is individual assessed work, and there are providers in this region selling completed internal assessments at a published price. Submitting one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the student. So the boundary is worth stating before anyone asks, and we state it to the student rather than only to the parent.

A tutor may teach any physics the investigation requires, test whether a design is viable, explain each criterion and what its descriptors mean, teach uncertainty treatment, and read the student's own draft and say what is not working. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply the data, choose the research question outright, or edit a draft into something the student did not produce. Where a draft needs changing, the tutor names the problem and the student rewrites. That is slower and it is the only version that is both lawful and effective, because the conclusion and evaluation criteria reward thinking the student actually did.

On materials: syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. A tutor works from legitimately obtained material and teaches the student to read the assessment criteria themselves. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners where current status cannot be evidenced, and examiner experience in any case gives no access to marking, boundaries or unseen paper content.

On regulation: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those operating without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so distrust quoted amounts. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education, and nobody should claim such a thing without a permit number.

Where we tutor

Al Barari and the communities it shares schools with

A proximity search returns these communities for an Al Barari address. Physics at Higher Level is taught in a minority of their schools, which is why the supply picture is similar across all of them.

Al Barari

Villa plots off Al Ain Road with no school inside, so every pupil commutes. Weekday sessions start realistically at five, which for a subject needing sustained concentration argues for a weekend morning where possible.

Nad Al Sheba

The nearest dense provision and the shortest commute of the group, with both British-curriculum and IB routes. The one community here where an earlier weekday physics slot is genuinely workable.

Arabian Ranches

An IB Diploma school nearby, so students here are often on the continuum route and arrive strong on investigation design and weaker on algebraic execution than their IGCSE counterparts.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases, with most secondary pupils travelling out. A high proportion changed school recently, and physics is the subject where a mid-course school change does most damage because topic order varies between schools.

Dubai Hills Estate

An IB continuum school within a short drive. Physics students from here usually met investigation design in the Middle Years Programme, so the first sessions target explanation writing rather than experimental method.

Motor City

Predominantly British curriculum, so Diploma physics students came through Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1. Whether they took Additional Mathematics is the best single predictor of the first term.

Dubai Sports City

Training schedules compress the evening, and physics is poorly suited to a tired late slot because explanation writing requires concentration rather than repetition. Holiday blocks work better here.

Mudon

Schooling spread across the Dubailand periphery with shared transport, so arrival times vary day to day. A fixed online slot absorbs that; a tutor waiting at a gate does not.

School ecosystem

Nad Al Sheba and Dubailand

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and the stage of the investigation

Higher or Standard Level, and where the scientific investigation stands: no topic yet, a topic but no data, data collected, or a draft written. Those four states need completely different first sessions, and the earlier one is in the list the more a tutor can affect the 20% that component carries.

  2. 02

A diagnostic that separates maths from physics

The first session works calculation questions and explanation questions separately, because a student can be strong on one and weak on the other and a school report shows neither. If the problem is rearranging rather than physics, no amount of physics teaching fixes it, and knowing that changes the whole plan.

  3. 03

A free first lesson with the named tutor

One full lesson, no charge, with the person who would continue. Ask them to name the four investigation criteria and their mark allocations. A genuine physics specialist answers immediately; most of this market cannot. Then watch whether they mark an explanation answer usefully rather than just correcting it.

  4. 04

Pick a slot where concentration is available

Physics is concentration work rather than repetition, and a student who can reason at ten in the morning may genuinely be unable to at seven in the evening. From Al Barari the realistic weekday start is five, so where a family can manage it we recommend a weekend morning for explanation and paper work.

  5. 05

Answers marked and rewritten in the session

Physics improves when a student writes an explanation, has it marked against the criteria, sees why it scored what it scored, and rewrites it there and then. A session where the tutor explains and the student listens does not produce that. The written note records which answers were rewritten and what the next set targets.

  6. 06

Reassess at each mock and each investigation stage

Mocks, marked papers and investigation drafts are the checkpoints where the plan is tested rather than renewed by habit. If the evidence says the level is wrong, we will say so and give you the marked paper to take to the school. If the subject is secure, we will say that and end the block.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Explanation treated as the main event

The extended-response paper carries the largest single share of the grade and it is marked on reasoning rather than knowledge. We teach command terms explicitly and mark and rewrite answers in the session, because that recovers marks across every topic at once instead of one topic at a time.

The investigation coached against its 24 marks

Four criteria, six marks each, with the outcome largely decided by the design before any data exists. We run the viability conversation first, teach uncertainty properly, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. Most pages in this market cannot name a single one of those criteria.

An honest account of what a screen cannot do

Practical work and laboratory familiarity happen at school and a tutor cannot substitute for them in any format. We say so, and then describe the three things a tutor genuinely contributes to practical physics, all of which work better on a shared screen than across a dining table.

The mathematics tested separately

A physics problem is frequently a mathematics problem in disguise, and a school report does not distinguish them. Our diagnostic works calculation and explanation questions apart, because telling a family their child needs algebra rather than physics is more useful than selling them six weeks of fields.

Rates published with their sources, and value per component

The dirham bands here are competitors' own published figures with the month they were read, and the page also sets out which tutoring blocks are good value per mark. Three of the six pages ranking for these searches publish no price at all.

Clear about the limits

No part of an investigation written by a tutor. No home visits in the UAE. No distribution of IB papers or mark schemes. No examiner claims we cannot evidence. No guaranteed grades. No approval or accreditation from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education, because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barari: your questions answered

Why does my child understand physics but score badly on explanation questions?+

Because explanation questions are marked on reasoning rather than knowledge, and the two are separable. 'The current increases' describes a graph. 'The resistance falls because the temperature rise increases charge-carrier density, so for a fixed potential difference the current rises' explains it. The physics is identical and the marks are not. Students who write everything they know satisfy no command term at all. Teaching the verbs explicitly is the highest-yield intervention in this subject, because it recovers marks in every topic at once rather than one topic at a time.

How much is the IB physics investigation worth and how is it marked?+

Twenty per cent of the grade at both Higher and Standard Level, marked out of 24 across four criteria carrying six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Confirm the current allocations with your child's teacher, since the IB revises its guides. The practical point is that research design is decided before any apparatus is touched, and the commonest failure is a question where the effect being studied is smaller than the measurement uncertainty, so the data shows nothing that later writing can recover.

Can physics practical work be taught over video?+

Practical work itself happens at school, with the school's apparatus and supervision, and no tutor in any format substitutes for that. What a tutor contributes divides into three things that all work on a screen: testing whether an investigation design can actually be measured, teaching uncertainty propagation and graph interpretation on shared data, and giving feedback on the student's own written draft. Where a screen genuinely loses something is laboratory intuition from handling apparatus, and we say so rather than pretending otherwise.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to an Al Barari villa?+

No. All UAE tuition is delivered live and one-to-one over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service we run only in India and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. For physics the cost of that is minimal, because the work is a shared screen, a worked problem, a marked explanation answer and a spreadsheet of uncertainties. The gain is a shortlist of people who actually teach the course at your child's level, which in Higher Level physics is a small group across the whole emirate.

Which physics topics cause most trouble for Dubai Diploma students?+

Electricity and circuits in every cohort, because circuit reasoning requires holding current, potential difference and resistance together rather than recalling one formula. At Higher Level, fields are the usual request: potential and potential energy have unforgiving sign conventions and abstract concepts. Nuclear binding energy compounds rounding errors across several steps. Underneath all of them sits uncertainty treatment, which is examined in the data-analysis section and central to the investigation, and which almost nobody arrives having been taught systematically.

How many extra hours does Higher Level physics need over Standard Level?+

It is harder in a specific way: it extends the treatment of most topics rather than adding separate ones at the end. That has a practical consequence families should know before choosing. You cannot prepare for Higher Level by learning the Standard Level course and bolting extra material on, because the extension is woven through the whole syllabus. A Higher Level student who is behind therefore needs roughly half again the total hours that the same gap would need at Standard Level, and the sooner that is recognised the cheaper it is.

When should my child start the physics investigation?+

Early in the first Diploma year if the school allows it, and at the latest as soon as a topic can be chosen. The reason is that research design carries six of the 24 marks and determines whether the other eighteen are reachable. A student who starts with a measurable question has a straightforward route to a strong mark; one who starts late with an interesting question that school apparatus cannot measure precisely enough has a problem no tutor can fix afterwards. The viability conversation takes an hour and saves a term.

What does IB physics tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Market figures read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for budget and student tutors, AED 150 to AED 300 for qualified subject tutors online, and AED 200 to AED 450 or above for IB specialists, with in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 500 including travel. Monthly, at one session a week, that is roughly AED 240 to AED 600, AED 600 to AED 1,200, or AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above. Those are published market numbers, not IB Gram prices; the first lesson is free.

Which tutoring gives the best value in physics?+

Investigation coaching, because the component is 20% of the grade and the mark is largely set by design decisions that six to eight sessions across a term can genuinely influence. Second is an explanation-writing block of four to six sessions, since the gain applies across every topic at once. Third is two or three sessions on uncertainty and data analysis, which pays twice over: once in the data section of Paper 1 and once in the investigation. Single-topic content teaching works but addresses one topic at a time.

My child is strong at the maths and weak at the physics. Is that normal?+

It is one of the two standard profiles and it means something specific. A student who calculates confidently and explains poorly usually has a conceptual gap rather than a knowledge gap: they can use an equation without understanding the relationship it expresses. That shows up as inconsistency, strong on calculation questions and weak on extended response. It takes a term rather than a fortnight, and it is why a physics diagnostic should work calculation and explanation questions separately rather than producing a single score.

How does a Middle Years Programme student fare in Diploma physics?+

Differently from an IGCSE student, and the difference is worth knowing. Middle Years sciences assess inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, so those students usually arrive comfortable with investigation design and weaker on algebraic execution. IGCSE students arrive with solid content coverage and a habit of short answers, so they struggle with extended explanation but handle the manipulation. Knowing which route your child came through tells a tutor where to look in the first session instead of discovering it in week four.

Can a tutor help design my child's investigation?+

A tutor can test whether a proposed design is viable, which is the most valuable hour available on this component, and can explain what each criterion rewards. What a tutor cannot do is choose the research question outright, supply the data, or write any part of the document, because conclusion and evaluation together carry twelve of the twenty-four marks and reward thinking the student actually did. Where a draft needs changing, the tutor names the problem and the student rewrites it themselves.

Is a weekend morning really better for physics than a weekday evening?+

Often, yes, and more so than in other subjects. Explanation writing is concentration work rather than repetition, and a student who reasons well at ten in the morning may genuinely be unable to at seven in the evening after a commute, a full school day and other homework. From Al Barari the realistic weekday start is five o'clock. Families who can manage a weekend morning for the explanation and paper work, with a shorter weekday slot for content, generally get more from the same number of hours.

Do physics tutors in the UAE need a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of quoted amounts. Ask to see the permit rather than accepting a verbal assurance, and ask any agency the same question.

Should a Higher Level physics student also be tutored in maths?+

Sometimes, and the diagnostic should answer it rather than guesswork. Higher Level physics assumes confident rearranging, indices, standard form, vector resolution and the beginnings of calculus reasoning, and where those are shaky the physics sessions spend their time on algebra at specialist rates. If that is the picture, a short mathematics block is cheaper and faster. If the algebra is secure and the explanation is weak, mathematics tutoring will not help and the hours belong in command-term practice instead.

Two questions that sort this market

Ask any physics tutor, including ours, to name the four investigation criteria and their mark allocations, and to mark one of your child's explanation answers rather than correct it. A genuine specialist does both without hesitation; much of this market can do neither. Then establish where the investigation stands, because the earlier it is in the process the more a tutor can affect the twenty per cent it carries. From there the work is unglamorous: explanation answers written, marked and rewritten, uncertainty taught once and properly, and full papers under timing. Al Barari sessions run live and one-to-one over video at Gulf Standard Time. Practical work stays at school, we make no home visits in the UAE, and we promise no grades.
