IB Maths Tutor in Al Barari

Hiring an IB maths tutor in Al Barari starts with a question most families answer too late: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level. Al Barari pupils commute out to several different Dubailand schools, and the maths route they were placed on is not always the route their intended degree expects. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live over video, at Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Barari

Which maths course is your child actually sitting?

There are four IB mathematics courses, not one. Analysis and Approaches at Higher and Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level. They share a small common core and then diverge sharply in content, in paper structure and in what a good answer looks like. A tutor advertised for 'IB maths' who cannot immediately name which of the four they teach is advertising for all of them and specialising in none.

This matters in Al Barari for a specific reason. There is no school inside the community, so pupils commute out to the Dubailand and Nad Al Sheba belt, west to Motor City and the Arabian Ranches, or towards Al Barsha South. Those schools make placement decisions differently. Some stream on IGCSE grade, some on a school test, some on the student's stated university plans, and some simply on which course they can timetable. The result is that two neighbouring Al Barari households can have Year 12 students in different courses at different levels, with different problems.

The second thing families discover late is that the choice has consequences beyond difficulty. Many university courses in engineering, physics, economics and mathematics itself expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and a student who took Applications because it was described as the easier route can find a door closed in Year 13. The reverse mistake also happens: a student placed in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level who did not need it spends two years fighting a course that was never a prerequisite for anything they want.

So this page starts with the course decision, sets out the paper weightings and durations, breaks the exploration down criterion by criterion with its mark allocations, and only then compares what maths tutoring costs in this market. It also compares Al Barari with the communities around it, because a proximity search is how most families start and it is worth knowing what it can and cannot deliver.

There is one further reason to establish the course before anything else, and it is about diagnosis rather than selection. A school report saying a Diploma student is struggling in mathematics does not distinguish between a topic the student has not met and an algebraic fluency that was never secure. Those look identical on paper and need completely different responses: a topic takes a few weeks of weekly sessions, while fluency takes a holiday block of four or five sessions a week, because fluency comes from volume rather than from explanation. Separating the two in the first session is the most useful hour a maths tutor spends.

One statement of fact before the detail. IB Gram delivers mathematics tuition to Al Barari as live one-to-one lessons over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a subject where a session consists of worked problems on a shared screen and a marked past paper, that format is not a compromise, and it widens the shortlist to every tutor who teaches your child's exact course.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics runs through every IB programme and the tutoring job changes completely at each stage. These are the three that matter to Al Barari families, plus the route into the Diploma.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

Mathematics within units of inquiry rather than as a separate subject, with no external assessment. The target worth working to is fluency: place value, fractions, operations and the beginnings of algebraic thinking, all of which the Middle Years Programme assumes from the first week.

For Al Barari families this is the one stage where having an adult in the room genuinely matters more than specialist knowledge. Since we make no home visits in the UAE, we will say so where that is what a child needs rather than selling a screen to a seven-year-old.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, each out of eight: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the criterion most pupils score worst on, because it rewards generalising and justifying rather than calculating, and no amount of arithmetic practice improves it.

MYP5 mathematics is also where the Diploma course decision is effectively made in most Dubai schools, often on the basis of criterion grades the family never read closely. If your child is heading for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, the criterion to watch is investigating patterns rather than knowing and understanding.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Four courses across two subjects and two levels. All four carry an exploration worth 20% of the final grade, internally assessed and externally moderated. Higher Level adds a third paper. The commonest tutoring request in Dubai is Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, and the commonest unspoken problem is that the student was placed in it without the algebraic fluency it assumes.

UAE schools overwhelmingly enter candidates for the May session. No IB exam or results dates appear on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unverified date a parent acts on is worse than none; confirm every one with your school's Diploma coordinator.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The route in from IGCSE

Most Al Barari Diploma students came through IGCSE rather than the Middle Years Programme. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 and Pearson Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 are the best preparation for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, because they introduce calculus and logarithms before the Diploma does. Without them the first Diploma term is steep.

The practical point for a Dubai family is that the Extended or Higher tier is effectively a prerequisite for Analysis and Approaches at either level. A pupil entered for Core or Foundation who intends to take the Diploma mathematics route has a content gap rather than a confidence problem, and it should be addressed before Year 12 rather than during it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Within IB mathematics these are the topic areas Al Barari families ask about, with where the marks actually go. The split by topic is more useful than a split by course, because the weak areas repeat across all four.

Algebraic manipulation and functions

All four courses, foundational

The single strongest predictor of a Diploma mathematics grade. Students who cannot rearrange confidently lose marks in every later topic, because algebra is the carrier for all of it. Partial fractions, logarithmic manipulation and function transformations are the recurring weak points.

Differential calculus

AA HL and SL, AI HL

Chain, product and quotient rules, then optimisation and related rates in context. Students who learn the rules without the reasoning fail on the applied questions, where the difficulty is setting up the expression rather than differentiating it. Implicit differentiation at Higher Level is a common collapse point.

Integral calculus

AA HL and SL, AI HL

Techniques of integration, areas, volumes of revolution and, at Higher Level, substitution and integration by parts. The error pattern is mechanical: limits substituted in the wrong order, constants dropped, or a definite integral treated as an indefinite one with a constant left attached.

Proof and reasoning

AA HL, some AA SL

Direct proof, proof by contradiction and proof by induction. This is the content least like anything in IGCSE, so students arrive with no technique at all. Induction in particular is a format that can be taught in two sessions and is then reliable marks for the rest of the course.

Complex numbers

AA HL only

Cartesian, modulus-argument and exponential forms, De Moivre's theorem and roots of unity. Marks are lost on argument conventions and on failing to sketch the Argand diagram, which usually makes the question obvious. A self-contained topic, which means it rewards focused tutoring unusually well.

Statistics and probability

All four, heavily weighted in AI

Distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression. In Applications and Interpretation the difficulty is interpretation rather than calculation: correct output from the calculator with no statement of what it means in context earns very little. Conditional probability is the standard trap in both courses.

Trigonometry

All four, extended in AA HL

Identities, equations, the unit circle and, at Higher Level, compound angle formulae. The dominant error is solving an equation and reporting only the principal value, losing the other solutions in the interval. Exact values without a calculator are examinable in Analysis and Approaches Paper 1.

Vectors

AA HL, AI HL

Scalar and vector products, lines and planes, intersections and distances. Students handle the algebra and lose marks on interpretation: whether two lines are skew, what the angle between a line and a plane actually means geometrically. Diagrams are not required but reliably raise marks.

Sequences, series and the binomial theorem

All four

Arithmetic and geometric progressions, sums to infinity and binomial expansion, with extension at Higher Level. A reliable source of early-paper marks and a reliable source of lost ones, usually through off-by-one errors in the index or forgetting the condition for convergence.

Mathematical modelling

AI HL and SL primarily

Choosing and fitting a model, then evaluating its fit and limitations. The Applications course rewards the evaluation step, and students routinely stop after fitting. The habit worth building is writing one sentence on what the model cannot capture, which is where the available marks sit.

The exploration

All four, 20% of the grade

A 12 to 20 page individual piece of mathematics on a topic of the student's choice, marked out of 20 across five criteria. Topic choice decides most of the outcome: a question that is too large produces description instead of mathematics, and one that is too small cannot reach the higher bands for use of mathematics.

Calculator technique

All four, examined in Papers 2 and 3

A genuinely teachable set of marks. Solving numerically, finding intersections, using statistical functions and knowing when a calculator answer needs supporting working. Students lose marks both by not using the calculator where it is allowed and by using it without showing the method that earns credit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Barari families run IB mathematics tuition, all delivered live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. Mathematics in particular rewards frequency over session length.

Weekly one-to-one through the term

One course, one tutor, a protected weekly slot. Mathematics is cumulative, so the value of a weekly session is that a gap gets caught in the week it opens rather than three topics later. The tutor works a step ahead of the school where possible, so the lesson consolidates rather than introduces.

  • Same tutor weekly, cumulative gaps caught early
  • Problem sets set between sessions, marked next time
  • Exploration steps spread across weeks, not crammed
  • Written note the same evening after each lesson

Paper-specific blocks before mocks or the session

Mathematics is the subject where paper technique is most separable from content. A block aimed at Paper 1 drills exact values, algebraic manipulation and non-calculator execution. A block aimed at Paper 3 at Higher Level drills sustained multi-part reasoning, which is a different skill from answering short questions well.

  • Paper 1 worked entirely without a calculator
  • Paper 2 built around calculator technique and method marks
  • Higher Level Paper 3 practised whole, under timing
  • Topic repair sequenced by where marks actually went

Exploration coaching across a term

The exploration is 20% of the grade and cannot be rescued in a fortnight. Coaching runs across a term: topic viability first, then the mathematics the student will need, then structured feedback on their own drafts against the criteria. The student writes every word; the tutor's role is to say what is not yet working.

  • Topic tested for viability before any work begins
  • Mathematics taught where the chosen topic requires it
  • Feedback against the five criteria by letter
  • Every sentence written by the student, without exception

Holiday intensive blocks

Four or five sessions a week during a Dubai school break. For mathematics this is the only realistic way to rebuild algebraic fluency, because fluency comes from volume rather than explanation. The summer between the two Diploma years is the highest-value block available.

  • Four to five sessions a week in school breaks
  • Best used for algebra and calculus fluency
  • Ramadan sessions move to afternoon or post-Iftar
  • Shorter sessions in preference to skipped weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barari

01

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation

This is the decision that shapes two years, and families in the Dubailand belt often make it on hearsay. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic route: it emphasises algebraic manipulation, calculus, proof and, at Higher Level, complex numbers. Applications and Interpretation is the statistical and modelling route: it emphasises data, distributions, hypothesis testing, modelling and technology-led method. Both are rigorous courses and both carry a 20% exploration.

The reputation that Applications is the easier course is unreliable. At Standard Level it is genuinely more accessible for a student without strong algebra. At Higher Level it includes a third paper of extended problem solving that many students find harder than the Analysis and Approaches equivalent, because it requires sustained reasoning across an unfamiliar context rather than execution of known techniques. A student choosing Applications Higher Level to avoid difficulty has usually chosen a different difficulty.

The decision that actually matters is the university one, and it has to be made before Year 12 rather than during Year 13. Many engineering, physics, mathematics and quantitative economics courses specify Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level. Entry requirements vary by institution and by year, and they are published by the universities themselves. Check the specific course pages of the universities your child is considering, in the UAE and abroad, and take the written requirement rather than a school's general impression.

The practical tutoring consequence is that a mismatch should be identified in the first term, not the fourth. If your child is in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level without the algebraic fluency it assumes, the honest options are a holiday intensive block to build that fluency or a conversation with the school about moving level while the change is still administratively possible. A tutor's useful contribution to that conversation is a marked diagnostic paper, which is evidence rather than opinion.

The papers, the weightings and the clock

Mathematics is the Diploma subject where structure is most worth knowing precisely, because the weightings tell you where tutoring time should go. At Standard Level in both courses there are two papers, each carrying 40% of the grade, with the exploration carrying the remaining 20%. At Higher Level there are three papers, with Papers 1 and 2 carrying 30% each, Paper 3 carrying 20%, and the exploration again 20%.

Read that carefully, because it has a direct consequence. At Higher Level, Paper 3 and the exploration together carry 40% of the grade, and both are the components students prepare least. Paper 3 is a small number of extended questions requiring sustained reasoning, and it cannot be prepared by doing short questions well. The exploration is a piece of coursework that many students begin far too late. Together they are the most neglected 40% in the Diploma.

The time pressure differs too. Standard Level papers run an hour and a half each. Higher Level Papers 1 and 2 run two hours each, with Paper 3 at an hour. A two-hour mathematics paper is an endurance problem as much as a knowledge one, and students who have only ever practised individual questions discover in the mock that their accuracy falls in the final half hour. That is a fixable, practisable problem, and it only becomes visible under full-length timed conditions.

Confirm the current weightings for your child's specific course with their teacher or Diploma coordinator before planning around them, because the IB revises subject guides periodically and the current guide is the authority. The structural point, though, is stable: Higher Level carries an extra paper and the exploration is a fifth of the grade in every version of the course.

03

The exploration, criterion by criterion

No competitor page in this market names a single exploration criterion, let alone its mark allocation, and that omission is why so many Dubai students lose marks in a component they had months to prepare. The exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria, and knowing the split changes how a student spends their time.

Criterion A, presentation, carries 4 marks and rewards a coherent, organised, focused piece. Criterion B, mathematical communication, carries 4 and rewards correct notation, defined terms and appropriate use of symbols and graphs. Criterion C, personal engagement, carries 3 and rewards genuine independent thinking rather than enthusiasm in the introduction. Criterion D, reflection, carries 3 and rewards critical discussion of what the mathematics showed and what it did not. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries 6 and is the largest single block.

Two conclusions follow immediately. First, criterion E is worth more than any other, and it rewards mathematics that is correct, relevant and at a level commensurate with the course. A beautifully presented exploration using mathematics below the level of the course cannot score well, which is the commonest failure among capable students who chose a safe topic. Second, criteria C and D together carry 6 marks and are the easiest to secure, because they reward thinking that the student can actually do if they know it is being marked. Most students who lose them lose them by not knowing they exist.

Topic choice is where a tutor earns their fee on this component. A question too large produces description instead of mathematics; one too small cannot reach the upper bands of criterion E. The right scale is a question the student can genuinely investigate using mathematics at or slightly beyond their course level, with a real reason for choosing it. That conversation takes an hour and saves a term. Confirm the current criteria and mark allocations with your child's teacher, since the IB revises its subject guides.

Where IB maths marks are actually lost

  • Unshown method forfeits credit even with a correct answer
  • Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 must be practised without a calculator
  • Multiple-root questions need the full solution set, not the principal value
  • In Applications, the marks are on the interpretation, not the output
  • Algebraic fluency takes a year to rebuild; topics take weeks

Ask a student what they are weak at and they will name a topic. Mark a paper and a different picture emerges. Across Diploma mathematics, a large share of lost marks comes from four repeated behaviours rather than from absent content, and all four are fixable inside a term.

The first is unshown method. IB mark schemes award method marks for the steps, so a correct final answer with no visible working scores below a wrong answer with sound method. The students most affected are the quick ones, who have been rewarded for mental calculation since primary school. The second is non-calculator execution in Analysis and Approaches Paper 1. A student who can find a root on a graphing display and cannot complete the square by hand will lose marks across the whole paper, and this only becomes visible when practice is actually done without the device.

The third is incomplete solutions in trigonometry and in equations with multiple roots. A student solves, reports the principal value, and loses the other solutions in the given interval. It is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, and it responds to a fortnight of deliberate practice. The fourth is interpretation, which dominates in Applications and Interpretation: correct statistical output with no sentence saying what it means in the context of the question earns very little, because the marks are attached to the interpretation rather than the number.

Genuine content gaps exist too, and when they do they are usually narrow: implicit differentiation, integration by parts, conditional probability, induction, argument conventions in complex numbers. Those are weeks of work. What takes a year is rebuilding algebraic fluency that was never secure, which is why identifying a course mismatch in the first Diploma term matters so much more than identifying it in the third.

05

Maths tutor supply in Al Barari against its neighbours

A proximity search is how most families start, so here is what it can deliver in this part of Dubai. For Middle Years mathematics and Standard Level Diploma work, local supply across the Dubailand communities is reasonable: there are plenty of competent mathematics teachers in Dubai and a number of them will travel. For Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, and particularly for exploration coaching and Paper 3 preparation, the pool narrows to a point where distance filtering stops being viable.

The reason is specificity. A tutor who can teach mathematics well is common. A tutor who knows which Paper 1 questions are examinable without a calculator, which exploration topics reach the upper band of criterion E, and how Paper 3 differs in kind from Papers 1 and 2 is not. Add the requirement that this person lives within driving distance of a villa community off Al Ain Road and has a free slot in a narrow evening window, and the number falls close to zero in every community in this belt, Al Barari and Nad Al Sheba alike.

The communities do differ, but in scheduling rather than supply. A Nad Al Sheba pupil can start at half past four; an Al Barari or Arabian Ranches 3 pupil realistically starts at five or later. For a demanding Higher Level course that difference is material, because a two-hour paper practised at seven in the evening after a commute and other homework is not a fair test of anything. This is the strongest argument for weekend mornings in mathematics specifically: full-length timed papers need a rested student and a clear two hours.

In-home rates also rise with distance from the centre, so the further out the community the worse the value of a proximity search becomes. Market in-home rates run roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel. The money buys presence, not specialism. For a subject taught through worked problems on a shared screen, with the student's own working visible and a paper marked in front of them, presence is the thing least needed.

What maths tutoring costs here, and what a parent can verify

Most pricing sections ask you to trust a number. This one is organised around what you can actually check, because in a market where three of the six ranking pages publish no price at all, verifiability is the scarce commodity.

You can verify the market band, because competitors publish it. Read in October 2026: EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, BartyED at AED 650. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with monthly estimates of AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are their figures, published by them.

You can verify a tutor's permit, because the MoHRE private tuition permit exists and the tutor can show it. You can verify what a tutor knows in one free lesson, by asking them to name the exploration criteria and their marks, describe how Paper 3 differs from Paper 1, and work a question from your child's actual course while you listen. You can verify progress through a written note after every session rather than a monthly summary. None of those require trusting anybody.

What you cannot verify is a promised grade, which is why nobody should offer you one and we do not. IB Gram publishes no hourly rate on this page either, because the right figure depends on which of the four courses, which level and how many weeks remain, and a single number spanning Applications Standard Level and Analysis and Approaches Higher Level with exploration coaching would mislead. The market band above lets you judge any quote, including ours, and the first lesson is free.

The exploration and academic honesty

The mathematics exploration is the component where the honesty question is sharpest, because it is individual, unsupervised and worth a fifth of the grade. There are providers in this region selling completed internal assessments at a published price, and a mathematics exploration is among the easiest things to buy. Submitting one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the student.

The boundary we work to is explicit and we state it to the student rather than only to the parent. A tutor may teach any mathematics the exploration requires, including content beyond the course if the student's chosen question needs it. A tutor may test whether a topic is viable, which is the most valuable hour available on this component. A tutor may explain each criterion and what its descriptors mean. A tutor may read the student's own draft and say what is not working: where notation is wrong, where reflection is missing, where the mathematics sits below course level.

A tutor may not write any part of it, supply the mathematics as a finished worked solution to be transcribed, choose the topic on the student's behalf, or edit a draft into something the student did not produce. Where a draft needs changing, the tutor names the problem and the student makes the change. That is slower and it is the only version that is both lawful and effective.

Effective, because of how the criteria work. Personal engagement and reflection carry 6 of the 20 marks between them and both reward thinking the student actually did. An exploration written by someone else reads as competent and disengaged, which is exactly the profile that loses those 6 marks and then struggles on criterion E too, because the mathematics was not chosen for this student's level. The students who score well chose a question they could genuinely investigate, early, and worked at it over weeks.

Where we tutor

Al Barari and the communities it shares schools with

A proximity search for an Al Barari address returns these communities. The maths course your child sits depends on the school rather than the neighbourhood, which is why this comparison is about scheduling and school route rather than supply.

Al Barari

Villa plots off Al Ain Road with no school inside, so every pupil commutes and placement decisions vary by school. Weekday sessions start realistically at five, which for a demanding Higher Level course argues for weekend mornings instead.

Nad Al Sheba

The nearest dense provision, with both British-curriculum and IB routes. Shortest commute of the group, so an earlier weekday maths session is genuinely possible here in a way it is not from behind the Al Barari gates.

Arabian Ranches

An IB Diploma school sits nearby, so a reasonable share of Diploma mathematics students in this area have been in the same school since primary. Placement is usually well evidenced, and a sudden dip points to a specific topic rather than a wrong course.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases with pupils travelling out to Dubailand or Motor City. A high proportion changed school in the last three years, which is the group most likely to have a mismatch between the maths course they were placed in and the one their prior content supports.

Dubai Hills Estate

An IB continuum school is within a short drive, so students here often arrive in Diploma mathematics from the Middle Years Programme rather than IGCSE. They are stronger on investigating and weaker on algebraic fluency, which reverses the usual diagnosis.

Motor City

Predominantly British-curriculum cohort, so Diploma students came through IGCSE. Whether they took Additional Mathematics 0606 or Further Pure 4PM1 is the single best predictor of how the first Analysis and Approaches term will go.

Dubai Sports City

Training schedules compress the evening, and mathematics is the subject families most often move into a holiday intensive block here rather than a weekly term-time slot.

Mudon

Schooling spread across the Dubailand periphery with shared transport, so arrival times shift day to day. A fixed online slot absorbs that; a tutor waiting at a gate does not.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course and the level

Before anything else we need which of the four courses your child is in: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard Level. The school can confirm it in one line. Everything about the plan changes with that answer, from the paper practice to whether non-calculator work is a priority.

  2. 02

A diagnostic that separates algebra from topics

The first session works through questions designed to distinguish a topic gap from an algebraic fluency gap, because the two look identical in a school report and need completely different responses. Topics take weeks; fluency takes a holiday block. Knowing which you are dealing with is the whole value of the diagnostic.

  3. 03

A free first lesson with the named tutor

One full lesson, no charge, with the person who would continue. Ask them to name the exploration criteria and their marks, and to explain how Paper 3 differs from Paper 1 at Higher Level. A specialist answers both without hesitation. If they cannot, tell us and we match again.

  4. 04

Pick a slot that can hold a full paper

For mathematics the slot matters more than in most subjects, because full-length timed papers need a rested student and a clear two hours at Higher Level. From Al Barari, weekday sessions start at five at the earliest, so we often recommend a weekend morning for the paper work and a shorter weekday slot for topic teaching.

  5. 05

Problem sets between sessions, marked in the next one

Mathematics improves through volume, not explanation. Each session ends with a set of questions, and the next session starts by marking them. That loop is where the gain happens, and a session plan that does not include it is a lecture rather than tuition. The written note tells you what was set and whether it came back.

  6. 06

Reassess after each mock or report

Every mock, report and marked paper is a checkpoint where the plan is tested rather than renewed by habit. If the evidence says the course level is wrong, we will say so and give you a marked paper to take to the school. If it says the subject is secure, we will say that too, even though it ends the booking.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Tutors who teach one named course

Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation Standard Level are different jobs, and we match by course rather than by subject. A tutor who offers all four equally is offering general mathematics, which is adequate for the Middle Years Programme and not adequate for Paper 3.

The exploration treated as 20% of the grade

It is a fifth of the final mark and the component most students start too late. We coach it across a term against the five criteria by letter, with the student writing every word. Most pages in this market do not name a single criterion, which tells you how much attention the component usually gets.

Paper 1 practised as it is examined

In Analysis and Approaches that means without a calculator, which sounds obvious and is routinely skipped because it is uncomfortable. A student who has only ever worked with a graphing display will lose marks across the whole paper, and the only way to find that out early is to take the device away in a session.

A diagnostic that distinguishes fluency from content

A topic gap and an algebraic fluency gap look the same in a school report and need entirely different responses. We separate them in the first session, because telling a family that their child needs a holiday block of fluency work rather than four weeks on calculus is more useful than selling them the four weeks.

Rates and credentials you can check yourself

The dirham figures here are competitors' published numbers with the date read, the MoHRE permit is a document a tutor can show you, and the free first lesson lets you test subject knowledge before paying. Everything load-bearing on this page is verifiable by you rather than asserted by us.

Clear about what we will not do

No part of an exploration written by a tutor. No home visits in the UAE. No guaranteed grades or predicted scores. No claim of approval, accreditation or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education, because we hold none of them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barari: your questions answered

Which IB maths course should an Al Barari student take, AA or AI?+

It depends on the degree, not on perceived difficulty. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebra, calculus and proof; Applications and Interpretation emphasises statistics, modelling and data. Many engineering, physics, mathematics and quantitative economics courses specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, so check the published entry requirements of the specific universities your child is considering rather than relying on a general impression. Applications at Higher Level is not an easy option either: its third paper demands sustained reasoning in unfamiliar contexts, which many students find harder than executing known techniques.

How are the exploration's 20 marks divided between the criteria?+

Twenty per cent, in all four courses at both levels. It is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation worth 4, mathematical communication worth 4, personal engagement worth 3, reflection worth 3, and use of mathematics worth 6. Confirm the current allocations with your child's teacher, since the IB revises subject guides. The practical point is that use of mathematics is the largest single block and rewards mathematics at or slightly above course level, which is why a safe topic using simple mathematics cannot reach the top bands however neatly it is presented.

Is Paper 1 really sat without a calculator?+

In Analysis and Approaches, yes, and it is the fact students most often fail to internalise until a mock. A candidate who can find a root on a graphing display but cannot complete the square, use exact trigonometric values or manipulate logarithms by hand will lose marks across the entire paper rather than on one question. The fix is uncomfortable and quick: practise with the device removed from the desk. In Applications and Interpretation technology is assumed throughout, which shifts the problem from execution to interpretation.

What is Paper 3 at Higher Level and how do you prepare for it?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level, runs for an hour and carries 20% of the grade. It consists of a small number of extended questions requiring sustained reasoning across several connected parts, usually in a context the student has not seen. It cannot be prepared by answering short questions well, because the difficulty is holding a long argument together rather than executing a technique. Whole papers under timing are the only preparation that works, which is one reason a weekend morning slot suits Higher Level mathematics better than a weekday evening.

My child was placed in Analysis and Approaches HL and is struggling. What now?+

Establish first whether the problem is a topic gap or algebraic fluency, because they look identical in a report and need different responses. A topic gap is weeks of work. Fluency that was never secure is a holiday intensive block at four or five sessions a week, because fluency comes from volume. If the evidence says the level is wrong, the honest options are that block or a conversation with the school about moving level while it is still administratively possible, and a marked diagnostic paper is the most persuasive thing to bring to it.

Does IB Gram send a maths tutor to an Al Barari villa?+

No. All UAE tuition is delivered live and one-to-one over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service we run only in India and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. For mathematics specifically this costs very little: a session is worked problems on a shared screen with the student's own working visible, plus a paper marked in front of them. What it gains is a shortlist of tutors who teach your child's exact course rather than those willing to drive to a villa community at five on a weekday.

How many sessions a week does Higher Level maths need?+

One a week through the first Diploma year is usually enough if it starts early, rising to two in the term before mocks or the exam session. Higher Level consumes roughly half again the time of the Standard Level version of the same course, because there is more content, an extra paper and the same exploration. Beyond two sessions a week in term time the limiting factor becomes the student's capacity to do the problem sets, and the problem sets are where the improvement actually happens rather than in the session.

What does IB maths tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Market figures read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for budget and university-student tutors, AED 150 to AED 300 for qualified subject tutors online, and AED 200 to AED 450 or above for IB specialists, with in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 500 including travel. Monthly, at one session a week, that is roughly AED 240 to AED 600, AED 600 to AED 1,200, or AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above respectively. Those are the market's published numbers, not IB Gram prices; our first lesson is free.

Can a tutor help choose my child's exploration topic?+

A tutor can test whether a proposed topic is viable, which is the single most valuable hour available on this component, and can explain what each criterion rewards. What a tutor cannot do is choose the topic on the student's behalf or hand over a question to be adopted wholesale, because personal engagement carries 3 marks and rewards thinking the student actually did. The right scale is a question the student can genuinely investigate using mathematics at or slightly beyond their course level, with a real reason for having chosen it.

Which IGCSE maths preparation suits Analysis and Approaches best?+

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 or Pearson Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1, taken alongside the main course in Years 10 and 11. Both introduce calculus, logarithms and trigonometric identities before the Diploma does, so the first Analysis and Approaches term is consolidation rather than first contact. The Extended or Higher tier in the main maths course is effectively a prerequisite in any case. A pupil entered for Core or Foundation who intends to take Diploma mathematics has a genuine content gap that should be addressed before Year 12.

Why do students lose marks when their answers are right?+

Because IB mark schemes award method marks for the steps, so a correct answer with no visible working scores below a wrong answer with sound method. The students most affected are the quick ones who have been rewarded for mental calculation since primary school. The second common loss is incomplete solution sets in trigonometry and multi-root equations, where a candidate reports the principal value and loses the rest of the interval. Both are habits rather than knowledge gaps, and both respond to a fortnight of deliberate practice with a tutor watching.

Is a weekend morning better than a weekday evening for maths?+

For Higher Level, usually yes. Full-length timed papers need a rested student and a clear two hours, and from Al Barari a weekday session realistically starts at five after a commute and before other homework. A paper practised at seven in the evening is not a fair test of anything and tends to produce a misleadingly poor result that knocks confidence. The arrangement that works for many families here is a weekend morning for paper work and a shorter weekday slot for topic teaching.

How does the Middle Years Programme prepare a student for Diploma maths?+

Unevenly. MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria including investigating patterns, which rewards generalising and justifying, so pupils from that route often arrive stronger at investigation and weaker at algebraic fluency than their IGCSE counterparts. That reverses the usual diagnosis: where an IGCSE entrant typically needs help with the exploration's open-ended demands, a Middle Years entrant more often needs drilling on manipulation. Knowing which route your child came through tells a tutor where to look first.

Should the same Al Barari tutor take both maths and physics?+

Sometimes, and in the Diploma it can be genuinely useful because a physics difficulty is frequently a mathematics difficulty wearing a different label. A tutor seeing both will spot that the problem in a fields question is rearranging rather than physics. The limit is level: at Higher Level in both subjects the right answer is usually two specialists, because Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Physics Higher Level are each narrow specialisms. Sessions remain separate one-to-one lessons in consecutive slots in either case.

Do maths tutors in Dubai need a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so treat quoted amounts with suspicion. Ask to see the permit rather than accepting a verbal assurance, and ask the same of any agency placing a tutor.

Name the course, then test the tutor

Two things settle most of this. Find out which of the four IB mathematics courses your child is in and at which level, because every element of a sensible plan follows from that answer. Then book a free first lesson and ask the tutor to name the five exploration criteria with their marks and explain how Paper 3 differs from Paper 1 at Higher Level. A genuine specialist answers both without pausing, and most of this market cannot. From there the work is unglamorous: problem sets between sessions, full papers under timing, and an exploration begun early and written entirely by your child. Al Barari sessions run live and one-to-one over video at Gulf Standard Time. We make no home visits in the UAE and promise no grades.
