IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Barari

An IB chemistry tutor in Al Barari is worth hiring at a particular point in the year, and most families hire two terms after it. Chemistry is the Diploma science where content accumulates fastest and where a weak October becomes an unrecoverable February. Al Barari pupils commute out to Dubailand schools on varying calendars, so this page is organised around the term you are actually in. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live over video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Barari

Chemistry is the subject where the month matters most

Of the three Diploma sciences, chemistry punishes a late start hardest. The reason is structural rather than conceptual. Chemistry content is strongly sequential: bonding underpins structure, structure underpins reactivity, moles underpin every quantitative topic, and energetics and kinetics both assume the quantitative work is secure. A student who leaves the first term with shaky mole calculations does not have a mole problem. They have a problem that will reappear, in a different costume, in every subsequent topic.

That is why this page is organised around the calendar rather than around a syllabus list. The useful question for an Al Barari parent is not whether their child needs a chemistry tutor but what the term they are currently in has to deliver before the next one starts, and what the remaining weeks can honestly reach. The answer in the first Diploma term is different in kind from the answer in the final one, because by the final term the investigation mark has already been submitted and only the written papers are still in play.

Al Barari adds a scheduling constraint to this. There is no school inside the community, so every pupil commutes out — north to Nad Al Sheba, west towards Motor City and the Arabian Ranches, or across towards Al Barsha South. Those schools run different internal calendars, so two neighbouring households can have students at quite different points in the same course. Weekday sessions realistically begin at five once the commute is done, which matters for chemistry because multi-step calculation is precision work and a tired student makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones.

The investigation deserves its own paragraph because its timing is the single most consequential thing in this subject. It carries 20% of the chemistry grade and is marked out of 24 across four criteria. The mark is largely decided at the design stage, before any solution is made up, by whether the chosen variable produces a measurable change with school apparatus. A student who begins in the first Diploma year has a straightforward route to a good mark. A student who begins in the second has a problem that no amount of later writing solves.

So what follows is a term-by-term planning frame, the paper structure and weightings, the investigation broken down criterion by criterion, where chemistry marks actually go topic by topic, and the Dubai market rates in dirhams with their sources. There is also an honest section on what practical chemistry a tutor can and cannot contribute when lessons are online.

One statement of fact. IB Gram delivers chemistry tuition to Al Barari as live one-to-one lessons over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry teaching is a shared screen, a worked calculation with every line visible, a marked mechanism and a conversation about an investigation design, none of which needs anyone in the room.

At a glance

  • Chemistry content is sequential; a first-term gap reappears all year
  • The investigation is 20% of the grade and should start in year one
  • Multi-step calculations compound a single early rounding error
  • Organic mechanisms reward notation discipline, not memorisation
  • Market science tutoring in Dubai runs from roughly AED 150 an hour online
  • Lessons are online only; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry arrives in an Al Barari student's life by different routes and at different points. These are the stages that matter, with what each one leaves unprepared for the next.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Four criteria per subject, each out of eight, with processing and evaluating among them. Students from this route reach Diploma chemistry comfortable with experimental thinking and frequently light on quantitative work, because the Middle Years Programme rarely drills calculation at the volume the Diploma assumes.

Several Dubailand schools run the full IB continuum, so a reasonable share of Al Barari chemistry students come this way. For them the first diagnostic question is not whether they can design an experiment but whether they can carry out a three-step mole calculation without losing a unit.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE chemistry into the Diploma

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 students arrive with good coverage of bonding, moles and qualitative analysis, and with a short-answer habit. The gap is depth: Diploma organic chemistry demands mechanism reasoning rather than product recall, and Diploma energetics expects quantitative treatment rather than qualitative description.

Most British-curriculum schools near Al Barari use this route. A pupil who sat the Extended or Higher tier arrives prepared; one who sat Core or Foundation has a genuine content gap in the quantitative topics and should address it before Year 12 rather than during it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Two written papers at each level plus the scientific investigation. Higher Level deepens the treatment of most topics rather than appending separate ones, so it cannot be prepared by learning the Standard Level course and adding material at the end. Confirm the current weightings and durations with your child's teacher.

UAE schools overwhelmingly enter candidates for the May session. No IB exam or results dates appear on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unverified date a parent acts on is worse than none. Confirm every one with the school's Diploma coordinator.

Post18Ages 17-19

Chemistry as a university prerequisite

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering routes commonly require Higher Level chemistry, often with a minimum grade. Requirements are published by each university and vary by course and year, so they should be read on the institution's own course page rather than inferred from a school's general advice.

For a UAE university application the Ministry of Education's equivalency requirements apply alongside the university's own. The British-track figures are published and sourced; no IB points threshold should be relied on unless read on the Ministry's own channel. IB Gram neither performs nor guarantees equivalency or attestation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the chemistry topics Al Barari families ask about, with where the marks actually go. Note how many of them depend on the quantitative work, which is why a first-term gap is so expensive.

The mole concept and stoichiometry

HL and SL

The load-bearing topic of the whole course. Concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and gas volumes all rest on it, and every error here propagates. Students lose marks less to the concept than to unit discipline: moles per cubic decimetre against moles per cubic centimetre decides more questions than understanding does.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL, extended at HL

Electron configuration, ionisation energy trends and periodic behaviour. Marks go to students who explain trends from shielding and nuclear charge rather than reciting them. Higher Level adds transition metal chemistry, which is self-contained and therefore unusually responsive to focused tutoring.

Bonding and structure

HL and SL, extended at HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and molecular geometry. Shape and polarity questions are routinely lost by students who know the theory and do not count lone pairs. Higher Level hybridisation and formal charge are precise topics where notation matters as much as reasoning.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL, extended at HL

Enthalpy changes, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and, at Higher Level, entropy and Gibbs free energy. Sign conventions are where the grade is decided: a correctly calculated magnitude with the wrong sign loses the mark. Hess cycle questions reward drawing the cycle before attempting arithmetic.

Chemical kinetics

HL and SL, extended at HL

Rate, collision theory, activation energy and, at Higher Level, rate laws, orders of reaction and the Arrhenius treatment. Determining order from data is a procedure that can be taught once and then relied on, and it is a common source of recoverable marks late in the course.

Equilibrium

HL and SL, extended at HL

Dynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier reasoning and, at Higher Level, equilibrium constant calculations. Written answers lose marks by stating that the equilibrium shifts without naming which change drives it. Calculation questions lose marks to assumptions that are not stated.

Acids and bases

HL and SL, extended at HL

Strength against concentration, pH scales and, at Higher Level, weak acid calculations, buffers and titration curves. The strength and concentration distinction is the most common conceptual confusion in the whole course, and it survives into Higher Level if nobody addresses it directly.

Redox and electrochemistry

HL and SL, extended at HL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrochemical cells and, at Higher Level, cell potentials and electrolysis calculations. Balancing half-equations in acidic or basic conditions is a procedure, not an insight, and it is reliably learnable in a session or two.

Organic chemistry

HL and SL, substantially extended at HL

Functional groups, reaction pathways and, at Higher Level, mechanisms including nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition. The commonest request from Dubai students, and the commonest mistake is memorising products instead of reasoning from electron movement, which fails as soon as an unfamiliar molecule appears.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

HL and SL

Mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance used together to deduce structures. A reliable source of accessible marks because the reasoning is systematic, and reliably skipped in revision because students treat it as an add-on rather than a method.

Uncertainty and data processing

HL and SL, examined and assessed internally

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and judgement about significant figures. Examined in the data section of the written papers and central to the investigation, so time spent here is paid for twice. Almost always under-taught.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL, 20% of the grade

An individual investigation marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. In chemistry the design trap is a reaction whose measurable change is too small or too fast for school apparatus, which cannot be rescued once the data exists.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Barari families run IB chemistry with us, all live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. Each is suited to a different point in the two-year calendar.

First-year weekly, consolidating as the school teaches

The most valuable mode and the least often booked. One tutor, one weekly slot, tracking the school's topic order so each session consolidates rather than introduces. Because chemistry is sequential, a mole or bonding weakness caught in October does not reappear as an energetics problem in February.

  • Topic order follows the school's own scheme
  • Quantitative work drilled with working shown
  • Problem set between sessions, marked in the next
  • Written note the same evening after each lesson

Investigation coaching started in the first year

The investigation is 20% of the grade and the mark is largely set at the design stage. Coaching runs across a term: viability first, then uncertainty treatment, then structured feedback on the student's own drafts against the four criteria. The student designs, measures and writes; the tutor says what is not working.

  • Design tested against school apparatus before any data
  • Uncertainty propagation taught properly, once
  • Feedback against the four criteria by mark allocation
  • Nothing written by the tutor at any stage

Second-year paper technique and topic surgery

By the second year the investigation mark is heading for submission and the written papers are what remain. The work becomes timed papers marked against the published scheme, with topic repair sequenced by where the marks actually went rather than by syllabus order. Usually two sessions a week through the final terms.

  • One timed paper every fortnight, marked properly
  • Topic order set by the mark distribution
  • Organic mechanisms reasoned rather than memorised
  • Honest scope: the external papers only, at this stage

Holiday and Ramadan-adjusted blocks

Dubai school breaks allow four or five sessions a week, which is the only realistic way to rebuild quantitative fluency. The summer between the two Diploma years is the last uncongested block in the programme. Ramadan sessions move to the earlier afternoon or post-Iftar and shorten rather than stop.

  • Four to five sessions a week in school breaks
  • Aimed at moles, energetics and organic volume
  • Post-Iftar scheduling available in Ramadan
  • Shorter sessions in preference to skipped weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barari

01

The chemistry calendar, counted backwards

This is the section competitors do not write, and it is the reason to read this page. The Diploma is not two years of study followed by exams. It is a sequence in which marks are banked at intervals set by your child's school, and in chemistry the sequential nature of the content means an early gap compounds rather than sits still.

Work from the end. In the final weeks before the session, the investigation mark is already submitted and only the written papers remain, so tutoring is paper technique and targeted topic repair. In the term before that, investigation drafts and a mock series usually collide, which is the most congested point in the two years. In the first year, everything is still available: content can be secured as it is taught, the investigation design can be chosen well, and the quantitative fluency that carries the whole course can be built rather than patched.

The table below is a planning frame rather than a set of IB dates. No IB exam or results date appears on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and publishing an unverified date to a parent who will act on it is worse than publishing none. The school-side milestones are the ones a tutor plans against anyway, and your child's Diploma coordinator can supply them in a single email.

Use it in one specific way. Write your child's own internal deadlines into the right-hand column, then count the weeks between today and the nearest one. That count, rather than a general sense of concern, is what should decide whether you book one session a week or two and whether the first target is content, the investigation or paper technique.

The papers, the weightings and the eight-week reality

The current IB Chemistry guide sets two written papers at each level alongside the internally assessed scientific investigation, which carries 20% of the grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Paper 1 pairs multiple-choice questions with a data-analysis section; Paper 2 is extended response and carries the largest single share. Confirm the exact weightings and durations for your child's cohort with their teacher, because the IB revises subject guides periodically.

Families in Al Barari frequently arrive eight weeks before a mock or a paper, so it is worth being specific about what that window does. Eight weeks of two sessions a week is roughly sixteen taught hours plus set work. That is enough to do three things well. Diagnose properly, by working a full paper under timing and marking it against the published scheme, which usually relocates the problem. Repair the three or four topics producing the largest share of lost marks. And fix technique: working shown for method credit, unit discipline, and answering the command term rather than writing everything known.

What eight weeks does not do is teach the sequential spine of a two-year chemistry course to a student who never secured it. If mole calculations are unreliable, every quantitative topic is unreliable, and that is a holiday block of volume rather than eight weeks of explanation. Nor can eight weeks touch an investigation mark already submitted, which is why a first-year booking has a materially higher ceiling than a final-term one with the same tutor and the same effort.

There is one thing eight weeks reliably changes that is hard to measure. A student who has been quietly avoiding chemistry revision because they do not know where to start will do the work once someone has broken it into a sequence. That shift usually happens by the third session, and for some students it is the whole of the gain.

03

The investigation, criterion by criterion, and when to start it

No competitor page in this market names a single investigation criterion or its marks, which is striking for a component worth a fifth of the grade. In the current science guides the individual scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Confirm these with your child's teacher, as the IB revises its guides.

In chemistry specifically, research design is where most of the eventual mark is won or lost, and the trap is measurability. A student picks a reaction that is interesting and then discovers the colour change is too subtle, the reaction too fast, the temperature change within the uncertainty of a school thermometer, or the yield too small to weigh reliably. The data then shows nothing and no amount of careful writing recovers it. A tutor's single most valuable hour on this component is spent asking, before any apparatus is booked, whether the proposed change can actually be measured with the equipment available.

Data analysis rewards correct processing, appropriate graphing and genuine uncertainty treatment — propagation through the calculation and a statement of how uncertainty affects the conclusion. Conclusion rewards answering the stated research question, justified by the data and compared with accepted chemistry. Evaluation rewards identifying specific methodological weaknesses and proposing realistic improvements, not generic statements about human error. Conclusion and evaluation together carry twelve of the twenty-four marks and are the cheapest to improve, because they reward thinking rather than apparatus.

The timing conclusion follows directly. A student who chooses a measurable question in the first Diploma year has a straightforward route to a strong mark, with time to repeat a trial that went wrong. A student who starts in the second year is choosing under pressure, has no time to repeat anything, and is usually writing up data that does not support a clean conclusion. The difference between those two students is often four or five marks out of twenty-four, which is a meaningful fraction of a grade.

Where chemistry marks actually go

  • Concentration units decide more questions than understanding does
  • Showing working protects marks when a calculation compounds an error
  • Draw the Hess cycle before calculating and the sign error disappears
  • Organic chemistry memorised fails on unfamiliar molecules
  • Uncertainty and significant figures are examined and internally assessed

Mark a chemistry paper rather than asking the student and four patterns appear in nearly every cohort. Three are habits and respond within weeks; one is structural and takes a term.

The first is unit and concentration discipline. Moles per cubic decimetre against moles per cubic centimetre, grams against kilograms, and the conversion between them decide more chemistry questions than conceptual understanding does. It bleeds a mark at a time and concentrates in titration and solution questions. The second is compounding error in multi-step calculation: a rounding decision taken at step one survives to the final answer, and because mark schemes credit the steps, a student who shows no working loses everything rather than most of it.

The third is sign convention in energetics. A correctly calculated enthalpy magnitude with the wrong sign loses the mark, and students who draw the Hess cycle before calculating almost never make the error while students who work algebraically frequently do. That is a habit change rather than a knowledge change and takes a fortnight of deliberate practice.

The fourth is structural: organic chemistry memorised rather than reasoned. A student who has learned the products of named reactions performs well until an unfamiliar molecule appears, at which point they have nothing. Reasoning from electron movement — where the nucleophile attacks, why that carbon is electrophilic, what the intermediate looks like — transfers to anything. Rebuilding that takes a term and is the commonest reason a capable Dubai student requests Higher Level chemistry support in the second year.

05

Practical chemistry when the tutor is on a screen

A straight answer rather than reassurance. Practical chemistry happens at school. Your child's school has the reagents, the fume cupboard, the balances and the supervision, and it runs the laboratory sessions in which the investigation data is collected. No tutor in any delivery format runs experiments for a student, and an in-home tutor arriving at an Al Barari villa with a burette is not what in-home tutoring looks like either.

What a tutor genuinely contributes divides into three things, all of which work on a shared screen. The first is design, which in chemistry means measurability: can the proposed change be detected with school apparatus, how many concentrations are needed and over what range, what has to be controlled, and whether a trial should be run before committing. That conversation determines the research design mark and it is talk rather than practice.

The second is uncertainty and data treatment. Propagating uncertainty through a multi-step calculation, deciding significant figures consistently, plotting with error bars and judging whether a gradient means anything is all better on a shared spreadsheet than across a dining table, because both parties see the same cells and the same graph. This is also the work that pays twice, since the data-analysis section of Paper 1 examines the same skills.

The third is the writing, which is identical in any format: the tutor reads the student's own draft, says what is not working and why, and the student rewrites. Where a screen genuinely loses something is laboratory intuition — knowing what a reaction looks like when it has gone wrong, how a burette actually behaves, why a reading drifted. The school provides that and a tutor cannot substitute for it. What a tutor can do is send the student into a laboratory session with a plan, which is more useful than it sounds given how many students arrive with none.

06

What chemistry tutoring costs across two years

Hourly rates obscure the decision a family is actually making, which is a two-year one. So here are the market bands and then the two-year arithmetic. Read in October 2026: EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, BartyED at AED 650. Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with monthly estimates of AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Now the calendar-led version. A family that starts in the first Diploma year typically runs one session a week for three terms, adds a holiday block, then two sessions a week through the final two terms. A family that starts in the final term runs two or three sessions a week for eight to twelve weeks. The second pattern costs less in total and reaches a lower ceiling, because the investigation mark is already submitted and the quantitative spine cannot be rebuilt in eight weeks. The first costs more and buys a fifth of the grade that the second cannot touch at all.

That is the honest comparison, and it is worth making explicitly because the cheaper option looks more attractive at the moment of decision. Spread across two years at the mid band, weekly chemistry support is a recurring monthly line of the kind a Dubai household can plan around. Compressed into a final term at the specialist band it is a larger monthly number for a shorter period, aimed at a smaller share of the grade.

For context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for Dubai private schools for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. The school bill is flat; the tutoring decision is the variable. IB Gram publishes no hourly rate here because the right figure depends on level, stage and component, but the band above lets you judge any quote including ours, and the first lesson is free.

Ramadan, holidays and when revision actually happens

  • School breaks are the only time four to five sessions a week is possible
  • The summer between the Diploma years is the highest-value block
  • Ramadan sessions shorten rather than stop; frequency is what matters
  • Post-Iftar and earlier-afternoon slots are both available
  • Rescheduling an online slot is easier than rescheduling a drive

The Dubai academic calendar shapes chemistry revision more than families plan for, and two features of it are worth building into a plan rather than reacting to. The first is the long school breaks, which are the only time a student can run four or five sessions a week. For a sequential subject like chemistry that is not merely more tutoring; it is the only realistic way to rebuild a quantitative spine, because fluency comes from volume rather than from being explained again.

The summer between the two Diploma years is the single most valuable block in the programme. Nothing is being banked, no deadlines are running, and a student can cover ground that term-time cannot touch. A family who uses it well arrives in the second year with the first year's content secure and the investigation already designed, which changes what the final year is for. A family who does not spends the second year carrying first-year gaps into harder topics.

The second feature is Ramadan. School hours shorten and the usable part of the evening moves, so sessions shift to the earlier afternoon or to a post-Iftar slot. The adjustment that works is a shorter session at the same frequency rather than skipped weeks, because chemistry is sequential and a fortnight's gap costs more than two shortened sessions would. Where Ramadan falls close to a mock series or an investigation deadline, plan the block before it begins rather than improvising week by week.

An online slot is considerably easier to move than a tutor's drive across Dubai, which is one of the quieter practical advantages of the format in this emirate. A post-Iftar session at nine in the evening is a reasonable ask of a tutor on video and an unreasonable one of a tutor who would have to drive to Al Barari and back.

08

Honesty, permits and what we will not supply

The investigation is individual assessed work and there are providers in this region selling completed internal assessments at a published price. Submitting one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller. So the boundary belongs on the page, and we state it to the student rather than only to the parent.

A tutor may teach any chemistry the investigation requires, test whether a design is measurable, explain each criterion and what its descriptors mean, teach uncertainty propagation, and read the student's own draft and say what is not working. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply data, choose the research question outright, or edit a draft into something the student did not produce. Where a draft needs changing, the tutor names the problem and the student rewrites. That is slower and it is the only version that is both lawful and effective, because conclusion and evaluation reward thinking the student actually did.

On materials: syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. A tutor works from legitimately obtained material and teaches the student to read the assessment criteria themselves. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners where current status cannot be evidenced, and examiner experience gives no access to marking, boundaries or unseen paper content in any case.

On regulation: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Those operating without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so distrust any page quoting an amount. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education.

Where we tutor

Al Barari and the Dubailand communities around it

These communities share schools and roads with Al Barari, and they run on different internal calendars. That calendar variation is the practical reason a tutoring plan has to start from your own school's dates.

Al Barari

Villa plots off Al Ain Road with no school inside, so every pupil commutes and the school calendar varies by household. Weekday sessions begin realistically at five, and chemistry calculation work suffers more than most subjects from a tired start.

Nad Al Sheba

The nearest dense provision and the shortest commute of the group, so an earlier weekday chemistry slot is genuinely possible. Mixed British and IB provision means neighbouring students may be on different assessment calendars entirely.

Arabian Ranches

An IB Diploma school nearby, so students here are often on the continuum route. They typically arrive comfortable with experimental design and light on quantitative volume, which reverses the usual chemistry diagnosis.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases with most secondary pupils travelling out. A high proportion changed school recently, and chemistry is the subject where a mid-course move does most damage because topic order and investigation timing both vary between schools.

Dubai Hills Estate

An IB continuum school within a short drive. Chemistry students from here met processing and evaluating in the Middle Years Programme, so investigation coaching starts further along than for an IGCSE entrant.

Motor City

Predominantly British curriculum, so Diploma chemistry students came through Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1. Whether they sat the Extended or Higher tier is the single best predictor of how the quantitative topics will go.

Dubai Sports City

Training schedules compress the evening. Chemistry calculation is precision work rather than repetition, so families here more often use holiday blocks than late term-time sessions.

Mudon

Schooling spread across the Dubailand periphery with shared transport, so arrival times shift day to day. A fixed online slot absorbs that variation in a way a tutor at a gate cannot.

Nad Al Sheba and Dubailand

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the term and the investigation stage

Which Diploma year and term your child is in, and whether the investigation has no topic yet, a topic but no data, data collected, or a draft written. Those states need entirely different first sessions, and the earlier one is in that list the more a tutor can affect the twenty per cent the component carries.

  2. 02

A diagnostic that tests the quantitative spine

The first session works mole, concentration and multi-step calculation questions deliberately, separately from the conceptual topics, because a chemistry problem is frequently a quantitative-fluency problem wearing a topic label. If the spine is shaky, the plan is a holiday block rather than six weeks on energetics.

  3. 03

A free first lesson with the named tutor

One full lesson, no charge, with the person who would continue. Ask them to name the four investigation criteria and their marks, and to talk through whether a proposed design is measurable with school apparatus. A genuine chemistry specialist does both immediately; much of this market cannot.

  4. 04

Pick a slot where arithmetic is reliable

Chemistry calculation is precision work and a tired student makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones. From Al Barari the realistic weekday start is five o'clock after the commute, so where a family can manage it we recommend a weekend morning for calculation-heavy work and a shorter weekday slot for content.

  5. 05

    Working shown, every time

Each session enforces visible working, because mark schemes credit the steps and a student who shows nothing loses everything when a multi-step calculation compounds an error. Problem sets go out and are marked at the start of the next session. The written note records what was set and whether it came back.

  6. 06

    Reassess at each school milestone

Reports, mocks and investigation drafts are the checkpoints where the plan is tested against evidence rather than renewed by habit. If the level looks wrong we will say so and hand you a marked paper to take to the school. If the subject is secure we will say that and end the block rather than roll it forward.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Planned from your school's calendar, not a scheme of work

Chemistry is sequential, so the month a tutor starts changes what tutoring can achieve. We plan from your child's own internal deadlines, which means each session has a target that sits between today and the next fixed date rather than following a generic topic order.

The investigation started early and coached by criterion

Four criteria, six marks each, with the outcome largely decided at the design stage by whether the chosen change can be measured at all. We run the viability conversation before any apparatus is booked, which is the single most valuable hour available on a component worth a fifth of the grade.

The quantitative spine tested separately

Moles, concentration and multi-step calculation carry the whole course, and a school report cannot tell you whether a topic problem is really a fluency problem. We test them apart, because telling a family their child needs a holiday block of volume is more useful than selling them six weeks of equilibrium.

Honest about what a screen cannot do

Practical chemistry and laboratory intuition happen at school and no tutor substitutes for them in any format. We say so, then describe the three things a tutor genuinely contributes, all of which work better on a shared spreadsheet than across a dining table.

Two-year costs shown, not just hourly rates

This page sets out what starting in the first year costs against a final-term rescue, and what each can reach. The cheaper option looks better at the moment of decision and reaches a lower ceiling, and a family deserves to see both numbers before choosing.

Clear about the limits

No part of an investigation written by a tutor. No home visits in the UAE. No distribution of IB papers or mark schemes. No examiner claims we cannot evidence. No guaranteed grades. No approval or accreditation from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education, because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barari: your questions answered

When in the Diploma should chemistry tutoring start?+

The first year, if the choice is available, because chemistry content is sequential and an early gap compounds rather than sits still. Mole calculations underpin every quantitative topic, so a student who leaves the first term shaky will meet the same weakness again in energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and acids. A first-year start also keeps the scientific investigation in play, and that component carries twenty per cent of the grade. By the final term the investigation mark is submitted and only the written papers remain.

Why does organic chemistry collapse for students who revised it?+

Because they memorised products rather than reasoning from electron movement. A student who has learned what named reactions produce performs well on familiar molecules and has nothing when an unfamiliar one appears, which is exactly what the Higher Level paper does. Reasoning from where the nucleophile attacks, why a particular carbon is electrophilic and what the intermediate looks like transfers to anything. Rebuilding that takes a term rather than a fortnight, which is why it is the commonest second-year request from capable Dubai students.

How is the chemistry investigation marked?+

Out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each in the current science guides: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, scaled to twenty per cent of the final grade. Confirm the allocations with your child's teacher, since the IB revises its guides. In chemistry the decisive criterion is research design, and the decisive question is measurability: whether the chosen change is large enough and slow enough to detect with school apparatus. A reaction that is too fast or a temperature change inside the thermometer's uncertainty produces data that cannot be rescued.

Does IB Gram send a chemistry tutor to an Al Barari address?+

No. All UAE tuition is delivered live and one-to-one over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service we run only in India and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. For chemistry the cost is minimal, because the work is a shared screen, a calculation with every line visible, a marked mechanism and a shared spreadsheet of uncertainties. The gain is a shortlist of people who actually teach the course at your child's level rather than those who will drive to a villa community at five.

What can eight weeks of chemistry tutoring realistically achieve?+

Three things, done well. A proper diagnosis from a full paper worked under timing and marked against the published scheme, which usually relocates the problem. Repair of the three or four topics producing most of the lost marks. And technique: working shown for method credit, unit discipline, and answering the command term. What it cannot do is rebuild the quantitative spine of a two-year course, which needs a holiday block of volume, or change an investigation mark that has already been submitted.

Which chemistry topics do Dubai Diploma students lose most marks on?+

Concentration units above everything: moles per cubic decimetre against moles per cubic centimetre decides more questions than conceptual understanding does, and it bleeds a mark at a time through titration and solution work. Then sign conventions in energetics, where a correct magnitude with the wrong sign scores nothing and drawing the Hess cycle first almost eliminates the error. Then acid strength against concentration, the most persistent conceptual confusion in the course, which survives into Higher Level if nobody addresses it directly.

Can practical chemistry be supported over video?+

The practical work itself happens at school, with the school's reagents, balances and supervision, and no tutor in any format substitutes for that. What a tutor contributes works on a screen: testing whether an investigation design can be measured with available apparatus, teaching uncertainty propagation and significant-figure discipline on shared data, and giving feedback on the student's own draft. What a screen loses is laboratory intuition, which the school provides. A tutor can at least send a student into a practical with a plan.

How should we use the summer between the two Diploma years?+

It is the most valuable block in the programme and most families waste it. Nothing is being banked, no deadlines are running, and a student can run four or five sessions a week, which is the only realistic way to rebuild quantitative fluency. Used well, a student arrives in the second year with first-year content secure and the investigation already designed, which changes what the final year is for. Used poorly, first-year gaps get carried into harder topics where they cost considerably more.

How does Ramadan affect chemistry revision in Dubai?+

School hours shorten and the usable part of the evening moves, so sessions shift to the earlier afternoon or to a post-Iftar slot. For a sequential subject the adjustment that works is a shorter session at the same frequency rather than skipped weeks, because a fortnight's gap in chemistry costs more than two shortened sessions. Where Ramadan falls close to a mock series or an investigation deadline, plan the block before it starts. An online slot is far easier to move than a tutor's drive across the emirate.

Is Higher Level chemistry worth it if the degree does not require it?+

Check the requirement before deciding rather than after. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering routes commonly expect Higher Level chemistry, sometimes with a minimum grade, and the requirement is published by each university and varies by course and year. Read it on the institution's own course page. If no intended course requires it, Higher Level chemistry is a substantial time commitment — roughly half again the hours of the Standard Level version — spent on something nothing depends on.

What does IB chemistry tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Market figures read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for budget and student tutors, AED 150 to AED 300 for qualified subject tutors online, and AED 200 to AED 450 or above for IB specialists, with in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 500 including travel. Monthly, at one session a week, that is roughly AED 240 to AED 600, AED 600 to AED 1,200, or AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above. Those are published market numbers rather than IB Gram prices, and the first lesson is free.

My child shows no working and gets the right answers. Is that a problem?+

Yes, and chemistry punishes it harder than most subjects. Mark schemes credit the steps, so a correct final figure with nothing written scores below a wrong figure with sound working. In multi-step calculations the effect compounds: a rounding decision taken at the first step survives to the end, and a student who showed nothing loses the whole question rather than one mark. The pupils most affected are the quick ones who have been praised for mental arithmetic for years, and two to three weeks of enforced working fixes it.

Should we book one session a week or two?+

Count the weeks to your child's next fixed deadline — an investigation draft date, a mock window, a report — and let that decide. One session a week through the first Diploma year is usually right if it starts early, rising to two in the terms before mocks and the exam session. Beyond two in term time the limiting factor becomes whether the problem sets get done, and the problem sets are where the improvement happens. If three subjects need attention, sequence them across terms rather than running them together.

Do science tutors in the UAE need a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of pages quoting amounts. Ask to see the permit rather than accepting a verbal assurance, and ask any agency the same.

What happens if the investigation data does not work?+

This is precisely why starting early matters. A student in the first Diploma year who collects data that shows nothing has time to change the design and repeat, which is a normal part of experimental work and no barrier to a strong mark. A student in the second year has no time to repeat and ends up writing up data that will not support a clean conclusion, losing marks on the conclusion and evaluation criteria as well as on analysis. The viability conversation before any apparatus is booked is what prevents it.

Find the next date, then count the weeks

Ask your child's chemistry teacher two things: when the investigation topic has to be approved, and when the internal draft and final submission dates fall. Then count the weeks between today and the nearest of them. That number decides whether you need one session a week or two, and whether the first target is the quantitative spine, the investigation design or paper technique. If the investigation has no topic yet, that is the work to do first, because it carries twenty per cent of the grade and the mark is set before any data exists. Al Barari sessions run live and one-to-one over video at Gulf Standard Time. Practical work stays at school, we make no home visits in the UAE, and we promise no grades.
