IB Past Papers Practice in Dubai

IB past papers practice in Dubai is usually priced by the hour and should be priced by the marked paper. A Higher Level paper takes two hours to sit and most of an hour to mark against the published markscheme, so the number that matters is what one complete marked attempt costs you. This page sets out where the papers legally come from, what the marking is worth, and what moves the figure in Dubai. Sessions run online.

  • Priced per marked paper, not per hour of conversation
  • Papers and markschemes are referenced and linked, never distributed
  • Command terms sit at stated assessment objectives in each subject guide
  • Grade boundaries move by session, so no boundary is quoted as fixed

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The papers are not the expensive part

Almost every Dubai family searching for IB past paper practice assumes the hard part is getting the papers. It is not. The hard part is that an unmarked paper teaches a student very little. Sitting a Higher Level paper takes two hours; marking it honestly against the published markscheme takes most of another hour, question by question, with the markscheme's accepted alternatives beside each answer. A student who sits ten papers and marks none of them properly has spent twenty hours learning that the papers are hard.

So the sensible unit of cost here is not an hour of tutoring. It is one complete marked attempt: the paper sat under timing, marked to the scheme, and then reworked question by question with the lost marks named. On published Dubai rates of AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IB specialist, one properly marked Higher Level paper with a rework session is a real sum, and it is worth knowing that before buying a package quoted in hours.

There is a second cost most pages never mention. IB past papers and markschemes are copyright material. They are not ours to send you, and they are not the free commodity the aggregator sites imply. Schools access them through the IB's own resource channels, the IB sells past paper packs through its store, and subject guides contain specimen material. A tutoring site that emails you a folder of papers is distributing someone else's copyright, and the student is the one left relying on files that may be the wrong syllabus version.

What a tutor adds, then, is not access. It is the markscheme discipline: knowing what the scheme pays for, recognising the command term the question actually used, spotting that an answer is correct and unawardable because it is written at the wrong assessment objective. That is the service, and it is the thing worth paying AED 250 an hour for. Access to a PDF is not.

Lessons are delivered online, one to one, over live video with the paper and the markscheme on a shared screen. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, as that is an India-only service, and for paper work the online format is the practical one: the student's own script is on screen, annotated live, and the annotations stay in the file for the next session.

The rest of this page covers where the papers legitimately come from and what each source costs, how command terms decide marks, how the paper structures differ by subject family, the three-pass method that makes a marked paper worth sitting, and what the whole plan costs in Dubai with every figure attributed to whoever published it.

At a glance

  • One marked paper, reworked, is the unit of progress and of cost

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Past paper practice means different things at each stage, and buying the wrong version is a common waste. The three stages below are the ones Dubai IB families are working with, and each has a different honest answer on papers.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

There is no bank of MYP past papers to work through, because most MYP assessment is internal and criterion-based. The external on-screen examinations at the end of year five are task-based and built on unfamiliar stimulus, so useful practice is teacher-set tasks and specimen material rather than a historical paper archive.

Dubai MYP families regularly ask for MYP past papers and are sold something that does not exist in the form they imagine. The honest substitute is criterion-marked tasks from the school plus any specimen material the coordinator can share, and a tutor who says so is saving you money rather than losing a sale.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma Programme, first year

Papers are useful in DP1 only topic by topic, because the syllabus is incomplete. The right practice is extracting single questions on taught topics and marking them to the scheme, which trains command-term accuracy early. Whole papers sat in DP1 mostly demonstrate that the untaught half is untaught.

Dubai schools run DP1 internal examinations towards the end of the year, and that is the first realistic point for a part-paper under timing. Before then, the better spend is on the Internal Assessment and on building the habit of checking an answer against a markscheme rather than against a textbook.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Diploma Programme, final year

The year whole papers earn their cost. A DP2 student is revising six subjects plus the core, so the scarce resource is time rather than papers. Practice has to be prioritised by where marks are actually lost, which is why the first marked paper in each subject matters more than the tenth.

The May session is the one most Dubai schools sit, with mock examinations typically falling in the second term. Specific IB examination and results dates are set by the IB and are not published here, because none has been verified from an official source for this page; your Diploma coordinator holds the confirmed dates for your school.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Paper structures differ sharply by subject, and so does what past paper practice should target. The grid below names the component where marks are most often recoverable in each subject rather than restating the syllabus.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Paper 1 is sat without technology and Paper 2 with it, and students who practise only with a calculator to hand are unprepared for the first. HL adds a Paper 3 of extended investigative questions, where marks go on explaining a method rather than reaching an answer.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology is permitted across the papers, which misleads students into treating questions as button sequences. Marks are lost on interpreting results in context and on stating assumptions. HL Paper 3 is a long data investigation and rewards structured commentary.

Biology

HL and SL

Data-based questions are where the recoverable marks sit, because they test reading a graph or table precisely rather than recall. Practice should be weighted towards those and towards extended response structure, with terminology checked against the markscheme's accepted wording.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Calculation questions carry method marks that students lose by not writing steps, and organic mechanism questions carry marks for arrows and intermediates that a correct product does not earn. Both are visible on a marked script and fixable within a few papers.

Physics

HL and SL

Units, significant figures and the explicit statement of a physical principle are where scripts bleed marks. A student can reach the right number and score below half on the question. Marked papers expose this faster than any amount of worked-example reading.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy with correct labels and a stated direction of change earns marks independently of the prose. Evaluation at the end of extended responses is the most commonly missing element, and it is the difference between a competent answer and a high one.

History

HL and SL

Source papers are mechanical once the structure is learned: value and limitations tied to origin, purpose and content rather than to generic comment. Essay questions reward a line of argument held across paragraphs rather than a sequence of accurate facts.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Guided analysis of an unseen text and a comparative essay. Practice value comes from writing to the clock and from comparing two of the student's own attempts, because the improvement is structural and visible between drafts.

Language B: French, Spanish, Arabic

HL and SL

Reading and listening components reward exam technique as much as language: locating the answer, respecting the word limit, matching the register the task asks for. Writing tasks lose marks on text type conventions rather than on grammar.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy paper practice, priced by what comes back rather than by minutes spent talking. All three are delivered online.

Single marked paper with a rework session

The smallest useful purchase and the right first step. The student sits one whole paper under timing in their own home, sends the script, and the tutor marks it to the published markscheme. The session that follows is spent only on the lost marks. You receive the marked script, the raw mark and a topic list ordered by where the marks went.

  • One paper, sat under timing, marked question by question
  • Raw mark recorded with the date and the paper reference
  • Rework session covering lost marks only
  • A topic list ordered by marks lost, not by syllabus order

A marked paper a fortnight across a term

The version that produces measurable movement, because the same student sits comparable papers at intervals and the raw marks sit side by side. Between papers the sessions work the topics the last script exposed. By the end of a term there is a line of marks rather than an impression of progress.

  • A full paper every two weeks, logged with its raw mark
  • Interim sessions driven by the previous script
  • An error log the student maintains and the tutor audits
  • A mid-term review comparing the first and third papers

Paper 3 and component clinics

Short blocks aimed at one component rather than a whole subject. Higher Level Paper 3 in maths and the sciences, source papers in history, data-based questions in biology. These are the highest-return purchases per hour because the technique is narrow and the marks are concentrated.

  • One component, three to four sessions, fixed end point
  • Markscheme wording drilled on real past questions
  • Timing practised at component length, not paper length
  • A written note of what was fixed and what remains

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Where IB past papers legitimately come from, and what each source costs

IB past papers, markschemes and subject guides are copyright material belonging to the International Baccalaureate. That is not a technicality that only lawyers care about: it determines which copies are current, which have been altered, and whether a student is practising the syllabus they are actually sitting. A tutoring site that hands you a shared drive of papers is distributing someone else's material and giving you no way to know which syllabus version you have.

The legitimate routes are short to list. Your child's school holds access to IB resources through the IB's own channels and teachers can set past paper material from them, which makes the Diploma coordinator the first and cheapest place to ask. The IB sells past paper packs through its own store, which gives you clean, current files for a known price. Subject guides contain specimen papers and markschemes. Any of these is a better basis for practice than a free aggregator.

The aggregator sites deserve a specific warning rather than a general one. Beyond the copyright position, the practical risks are that the paper belongs to a superseded syllabus, that the markscheme has been retyped with errors, and that the file set is incomplete in exactly the way that matters, such as a missing data booklet. A student whose first experience of a markscheme is a retyped one learns the wrong accepted wording, which is the opposite of the point.

The table sets the sources against each other. Note what is absent from every row: IB Gram. We reference and link official sources and we do not distribute papers or markschemes, because they are not ours to give and because the version control matters more than the convenience.

02

Command terms are what the markscheme actually pays for

Every IB subject guide publishes a list of command terms and ties them to assessment objectives. State, outline, describe, explain, discuss, evaluate, justify, compare and contrast, deduce, determine: each one names a different depth of response, and the markscheme is written for that depth. An answer written at the wrong depth can be entirely correct and earn nothing, which is the single most frustrating experience in IB marking and the easiest to fix.

The pattern is consistent across subjects. Low-objective terms such as state and define want a short, exact response and are over-answered by able students who write a paragraph where a line was wanted, wasting time they later need. High-objective terms such as discuss and evaluate want a judgement supported both ways and are under-answered by students who describe accurately and never judge. Both errors are habits rather than knowledge gaps.

Working from a marked script is what breaks the habit, because the student sees their own correct sentence next to a markscheme that did not pay for it. In practice two or three papers is enough for a student to start reading the command term before the stem, which is the behaviour you are paying for. After that, the same student gains marks across every subject that shares the term list.

The table below pairs common command terms with what the scheme expects and the loss each one invites. Print it and keep it beside the student while they mark their own script; self-marking with the term list visible is the cheapest version of this intervention and it works.

COMMAND TERMS, WHAT THE MARKSCHEME WANTS, AND THE USUAL LOSS

03

Paper structures differ, so practice has to differ too

A student revising six subjects cannot practise all of them the same way, and the schedule most families write treats every paper as interchangeable. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches sits Paper 1 without technology and Paper 2 with it, so a student who always has a calculator to hand is systematically under-practised on half the subject. Applications and Interpretation permits technology throughout, which produces the opposite problem: fluent button use and weak interpretation.

Higher Level Paper 3 in maths is a separate discipline again. It is short, investigative, and awards marks for setting out a method and justifying steps rather than for a final answer. Students routinely skip it in revision because there are fewer past versions available, which is exactly why marking two of them properly has an unusually high return per hour.

In the sciences, data-based questions are the most recoverable component, because they test precise reading of a graph or table rather than memory. In history, source questions are mechanical once the structure is internalised: origin, purpose and content, then value and limitations that follow from them. In the language subjects, the loss is in text type conventions and word limits rather than in vocabulary.

The table maps the subject families to the practice that pays. Use it to allocate a fixed number of marked papers rather than to extend the schedule, because the constraint in the final Diploma year is hours in the week and not availability of papers. Confirm the current component pattern for each of your child's subjects against the subject guide the school is teaching from, since several guides have been revised in recent years and a paper from an older session may not match the structure your child will actually sit.

The three-pass method that makes a marked paper worth sitting

  • Pass one: sat under timing, no notes, no pausing
  • Pass two: self-marked against the scheme before anyone sees it
  • Pass three: independently re-marked, discrepancies discussed
  • Every lost mark classified into one of four causes, then logged

Most students sit a paper, see a mark, feel briefly bad about it and move on. That cycle costs two hours and teaches almost nothing. The method that extracts value has three passes over the same script, and the second and third are where the marks come from. It is simple enough that a student can run it alone once they have been shown it twice, which is the honest goal of paid support here.

The first pass is the sitting itself, under real timing, with no notes and no pausing. The timing is not a detail: a paper done over three evenings with a textbook open measures something other than the examination. The second pass is self-marking against the markscheme before anybody else sees it, which forces the student to read what the scheme actually pays for and is the single highest-return twenty minutes in the process.

The third pass is the tutor's. The script is re-marked independently, the two marks are compared, and every discrepancy is discussed, because a discrepancy means the student misread either the question or the scheme. Each lost mark is then classified as content not known, command term misread, method not shown, or time ran out. Those four categories drive completely different responses, and lumping them together as revise more is why plans stall.

The output is an error log the student maintains: paper reference, question, category of loss, and the fix. Over three papers the log shows a pattern, and the pattern is usually narrower than anyone expected. Students discover that half their losses in chemistry are method marks and none are content, which turns a vague fear of the subject into a specific habit to change.

05

What a past paper plan costs in Dubai, priced per marked paper

Three questions let a parent verify any quote in this market. How long is the session. Is marking of work outside the session included. And how many complete marked papers will exist at the end of the block. A provider who answers all three in writing is quoting something comparable; a provider who answers in hours and subjects is not, and the difference is usually the marking.

The published Dubai bands give the arithmetic. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200 an hour. TutorChase quotes AED 270 for an IB specialist. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED's premium named tier reaches AED 650. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate, with independent tutors quoted up to AED 500 once travel is priced in.

Translate that into marked papers. A Higher Level paper needs roughly forty to fifty minutes of marking plus a sixty-minute rework session, so call it two chargeable hours per marked paper with a specialist. At the mid band that is AED 300 to 600 per marked paper; at the specialist band, AED 400 to 900. A term of one paper a fortnight in two subjects is therefore a substantial commitment, and seeing it stated that way is more useful than a monthly figure that hides the volume.

What that reframing changes is the decision. Families often buy weekly hours in six subjects and end the term with no complete marked paper in any of them. Buying four marked papers in the two weakest subjects costs less and produces evidence. Every figure in this section belongs to the provider that published it; IB Gram quotes its own rate after the free trial lesson, stating the session length and whether marking is included.

Why a good school report and a bad past paper score live together

This combination arrives in nearly every first conversation. The student is doing well in school assessments and scoring two or three grades lower on past papers, and the family reasonably suspects the school, the tutor or the student. Usually it is none of them. School assessments are often set on the topic just taught, with familiar question styles and a teacher who knows what was covered. A past paper samples the whole syllabus in the examiner's own wording.

Three specific gaps produce most of the drop. Breadth: a topic taught eight months ago has decayed and nothing in school has required it since. Wording: the paper uses the command term list rather than the teacher's phrasing. And endurance: a two-hour paper at the end of a school day measures something a forty-minute class test does not, and students lose marks in the final third at a rate that has nothing to do with knowledge.

Each of those has a different fix, and naming which one is operating is the whole value of the first marked paper. A decay problem needs interleaved review of old topics. A wording problem needs command term work and costs very little. An endurance problem needs full-length sittings and sleep, which no tutor can sell you and should say so.

What this also means is that the first past paper score is not a prediction. It is a measurement taken before any of the examination-specific work has happened, and treating it as a forecast is both inaccurate and demoralising. The number that matters is the gap between the first and third marked papers in the same subject, sat under the same conditions.

07

Marking honestly: what a tutor can and cannot claim

A tutor marks to the published markscheme. That is a real skill and a limited claim, and the limit matters. A markscheme lists accepted answers and allowed alternatives; applying it consistently to a student's own wording takes practice and judgement. What it does not give anybody is access to grade boundaries for a future session, to unreleased material, or to how a particular examiner would behave on a borderline response.

Grade boundaries move session by session, which is why no boundary is quoted on this page as a fixed figure. A raw mark converted using last session's boundaries is an estimate, and it should be presented as one. A tutoring site that tells you a raw mark equals a grade 6 is adding a precision that does not exist, and a family making a university decision on that number is being misled.

IB Gram also does not describe tutors as IB examiners. Examiner status is a specific appointment, it changes, and it is not evidence we can show you for every tutor on a platform. Where a tutor's examining experience is current and evidenced it can be stated on their own profile; it will not appear as a blanket claim on a landing page, and it would never imply access to marking decisions or paper content.

The honest offer, then, is narrower and more useful than the usual one. A tutor will mark a whole paper to the published scheme, show you the marked script, record the raw mark with the paper reference and the date, give an estimate band with the caveat attached, and name the four categories your child's lost marks fall into. Everything on this page is designed so you can check that offer rather than take it on trust.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Whole papers need an uninterrupted two hours, which is a scheduling problem rather than a geographic one. These notes are about when a Dubai household can realistically find that block.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills

Villa communities feeding full-continuum IB schools, so DP2 cohorts here are large and mock timetables cluster. Weekend mornings are the realistic slot for a timed Higher Level paper, and they book out early in the second term.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Short commutes make a 16:30 start possible, which is unusual in Dubai and useful for a two-hour paper on a weekday. Worth taking if your child's school is in this cluster rather than defaulting to the weekend.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Mixed British and IB households, which means IGCSE mock papers and Diploma mocks in the same term. Two timed papers in one weekend is too much for most students; splitting them across a fortnight works better.

Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

A long eastern commute, so weekday timed papers rarely survive. Families here tend to run the sitting at home on a Saturday morning and the rework session on a weekday evening, which is a sensible split.

Business Bay and Downtown

Apartments with limited quiet space, where a two-hour silent sitting is harder to arrange than the tutoring. A paper split into two timed halves, clearly logged as such, is better than a sitting interrupted halfway through.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University-belt families, often with strong Higher Level maths and science cohorts. Demand here concentrates on Paper 3 practice, which is short, specific and often the highest-return paper to mark.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Western Dubai Diploma schools

Large DP2 cohorts with internal mock timetables that drive demand for marked papers in a narrow window. Booking the marking capacity before the mock season rather than during it is the single practical advantage available to a family here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the paper first

The Diploma coordinator and subject teachers hold legitimate access to current IB material, and that is the cheapest and most reliable source. Ask which papers the school will set and when. Coming to a tutor with a school-set paper already in hand removes any question about syllabus version and any question about copyright.

  2. 02

Sit one whole paper under timing at home

No notes, no pausing, full duration, in one sitting. Then self-mark against the markscheme before anyone else sees it. That self-marking is unpleasant and is the highest-return twenty minutes in the whole process, because it forces the student to read what the scheme actually pays for.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson spent on that script

The trial is a real session with the tutor who would continue, with no card details taken beforehand, and it is spent on the student's own marked script rather than on introductions. By the end you should have the four categories of loss named and a proposed number of sessions with an end date.

  4. 04

A paper a fortnight, with the marks logged

Comparable papers at intervals, each sat under the same conditions, each raw mark recorded with the paper reference and date. The interim sessions work the topics the last script exposed. The measure of progress is the gap between the first and third marked papers, not the tutor's impression.

  5. 05

Hand the method back to the student

Once a student can self-mark accurately and maintain an error log, the paid part should shrink. A tutor who has shown the method twice and then audits it monthly costs a fraction of weekly sessions and produces a student who can revise without supervision, which is the outcome worth aiming at.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced per marked paper

The quote states how many complete marked papers will exist at the end of the block. That is a number you can hold somebody to, unlike a weekly hour in six subjects which can run a whole term without producing a single full marked script.

We link the official sources and distribute nothing

IB papers, markschemes and guides are the IB's copyright and are not ours to send. The school and the IB's own store are the routes, and saying so protects you from practising a superseded syllabus from a retyped file.

Lost marks classified, not just counted

Every lost mark is sorted into content not known, command term misread, method not shown, or time ran out. Those four need different responses, and separating them is what turns a disappointing score into a short list of specific habits to change.

Estimates carry their caveat

Grade boundaries move by session, so a raw mark converted to a grade is an estimate and is labelled as one. No boundary is published here as fixed, and no tutor is described as an IB examiner without evidence that could be shown.

Online, with the script on the screen

Sessions run over live video with the student's own marked script shared and annotated live, and the annotations stay in the file. No home visits are offered anywhere in the UAE, which removes the travel premium in every published Dubai rate table.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Where can we legally get IB past papers in Dubai?+

Three routes. Your child's school holds legitimate access to IB material and the Diploma coordinator or subject teacher can set past paper work from it, which is the cheapest and most reliable source. The IB sells past paper packs through its own store, giving you current files for a known price. Subject guides contain specimen papers and markschemes. Any of those is better than a free aggregator, where the common problems are superseded syllabus versions, retyped markschemes with errors, and missing supporting material such as a data booklet.

Why will you not just send us a folder of papers and markschemes?+

Because they are not ours to send. IB past papers, markschemes and subject guides are the International Baccalaureate's copyright, and distributing them is a breach regardless of how commonly it is done. There is also a practical reason that matters more to your child: files passed around privately are frequently the wrong syllabus version or retyped with errors, and a student who learns a markscheme's accepted wording from a flawed copy has learned the wrong thing. We reference and link the official sources instead.

How many IB past papers should my child actually do?+

Fewer than most revision plans assume, marked far more carefully. Three complete marked papers in a subject, each self-marked then independently re-marked and reworked, usually reveal the full pattern of where marks are being lost. A fourth and fifth add confirmation rather than information. The common failure is ten papers sat and none marked properly, which costs twenty hours and teaches that the papers are hard. Prioritise two subjects, complete the cycle in both, then decide where the next hours go.

What does it cost to have a full IB paper marked in Dubai?+

Work it out from the published hourly bands rather than from a package price. Marking a Higher Level paper against the scheme takes roughly forty to fifty minutes, and the rework session that recovers the marks takes an hour, so budget about two chargeable hours per marked paper. At Dubai's published rates of AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online tutor and AED 200 to 450 for an IB specialist, that is roughly AED 300 to 900 per marked paper. Ask any provider how many marked papers their block produces.

Are the free IB past paper websites safe to use?+

They carry two risks, and the copyright one is not the risk to your child. The practical dangers are a paper from a superseded syllabus, a markscheme retyped with errors, and an incomplete file set missing the data booklet or formula sheet the real paper assumes. A student practising from any of those is calibrating against the wrong standard. If the file came from a site rather than from the school or the IB, check the session and syllabus version before your child spends two hours on it.

Do IB grade boundaries stay the same from one session to the next?+

No. Boundaries are set per session and move, which is why no boundary figure is published on this page as fixed. A raw mark converted using a previous session's boundaries is an estimate and should always be labelled as one. This matters for real decisions: a family choosing a university offer on the basis of a converted mock mark is acting on a number with error bars that nobody states. Ask for the raw mark and the paper reference, and treat the implied grade as indicative.

Should my child practise by topic or sit whole papers under timing?+

Both, in that order, and the stage decides the mix. In the first Diploma year the syllabus is incomplete, so topic questions marked to the scheme are the right purchase and whole papers mostly demonstrate that the untaught half is untaught. In the final year whole papers earn their cost, because breadth, wording and endurance are what separate a school test result from an examination result. A reasonable rhythm in the final year is one full paper a fortnight with topic work between them.

What is a command term and why does it decide the mark?+

Every IB subject guide publishes a list of command terms tied to assessment objectives, and the markscheme is written for the depth the term demands. State wants one exact point. Explain wants a mechanism. Evaluate wants a judgement supported both ways. An answer written at the wrong depth can be completely correct and earn nothing, which is the most common recoverable loss on a marked script. Two or three marked papers is usually enough for a student to start reading the command term before the question stem.

Which IB mathematics papers allow a calculator?+

In Analysis and Approaches, Paper 1 is sat without technology and Paper 2 with it, so a student who always revises with a calculator to hand is under-practised on half the subject. In Applications and Interpretation technology is permitted across the papers, which produces the opposite weakness: fluent button use and thin interpretation of what the output means. Higher Level students in both courses also sit Paper 3, which rewards setting out and justifying a method rather than reaching a final answer, and is often the highest-return paper to mark.

My child does well in school tests and badly on past papers. Why?+

Three causes account for most of it. Breadth, because a school test samples the topic just taught while a paper samples the whole syllabus including material last seen eight months ago. Wording, because the paper uses the published command terms rather than the teacher's phrasing. And endurance, because marks fall away in the final third of a two-hour paper for reasons unrelated to knowledge. Each needs a different response, and naming which one is operating is the main value of the first properly marked paper.

Do you run in-person past-paper sessions at our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, because that is an India-only service, and every session is delivered online over live video. For paper work this is the practical format rather than a compromise. The student's own script is shared on screen and annotated live, the annotations stay in the file for the next session, and the raw marks accumulate in one place. It also removes the travel premium that sits between the published online and in-home rate bands in this market.

When should past paper practice start in the final Diploma year?+

Early enough that the first marked paper is a diagnosis rather than a verdict, which in practice means well before the school's mock window. Sitting the first paper a fortnight before mocks leaves no time to act on what it shows. Sitting it at the start of the second term gives space for three cycles in the weakest two subjects. Ask the school when its mocks fall, then work backwards, and book marking capacity before the mock season rather than during it, when every tutor in the city is full.

Can a tutor mark my child's paper the way an examiner would?+

A tutor marks to the published markscheme, consistently and with the accepted alternatives applied, and that is a real and useful skill. It is not the same as being an examiner, and IB Gram does not describe tutors as IB examiners on a landing page, because examiner status is a specific appointment that changes and that we could not evidence for every tutor. Where it is current and evidenced it belongs on an individual profile. Nobody has access to future boundaries or unreleased material, whatever a site claims.

How do we keep an error log, and does it actually change anything?+

Four columns are enough: paper reference, question number, category of loss, and the fix. The categories are content not known, command term misread, method not shown, and time ran out. The log works because it turns a vague sense of weakness into a pattern, and the pattern is almost always narrower than the student feared. A typical finding is that most chemistry losses are method marks and none are content, which changes the revision plan from reread the topic to write the steps down.

Is it worth buying specimen papers or past paper packs from the IB store?+

Often yes, particularly where the school cannot supply much and the subject has recently changed guides. The value is version certainty: you know the paper matches the syllabus your child is sitting and the markscheme has not been retyped. Specimens show format rather than the breadth of a real session, so they are better used early to learn the paper's shape than late to simulate the examination. Check with the coordinator first, because the school may already hold what you are about to buy.

One paper, marked properly, before anything else

If you do one thing after reading this, make it this: ask the school for a current paper in your child's weakest subject, have them sit it under real timing in one go, and have them self-mark it against the markscheme before anybody else sees it. Then book the free trial lesson and spend it on that script. By the end of the session you should know which of the four categories your child's lost marks fall into, and you should have a proposed number of sessions with an end date and a count of marked papers. That is a quote you can check, which is the point of every figure on this page.
