IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The word 'certified' does a lot of work in this search, so let us pin it down

There is no single badge that makes someone a certified IB tutor in Dubai. The International Baccalaureate authorises schools, not freelance tutors, and it runs professional development for teachers employed by those schools. So when a listing says 'certified', the honest follow-up question is: certified by whom, in what, and can you show me the document? Almost every useful answer falls into one of four buckets: a degree in the subject, a teaching qualification, a record of having taught or marked the course, or a government permit to tutor privately in the UAE. Each of those is checkable. Nothing else on a tutoring profile is.

The one piece of paper that is genuinely compulsory is the UAE private tuition work permit. It was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. According to u.ae, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and the people eligible to hold one include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone giving private lessons without that permit is, in the government's own words, subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so nobody should be quoting you an amount.

Dubai adds a second layer that catches parents out. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority regulates private schools in the emirate, and it issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes that operate from premises with staff. That permit belongs to a building and a business, not to an individual on a laptop. A tutoring brand that holds it can say so and show the number. A brand that does not hold it should never imply otherwise, and a parent who sees a regulator's logo on a tutoring site is entitled to ask for the permit number before anything else.

IB Gram is a matching platform, not a school and not a training institute with a Dubai address. We hold no board accreditation and we do not claim any. What we do is read your child's situation, put forward a tutor whose subject background fits it, let you test that tutor in a free trial lesson, and change the match if the first one does not work. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on a shared screen, scheduled around a Dubai school week. We do not send anyone to a UAE address; in-home visits are a service we run only in India.

The rest of this page is a verification manual. It lists the credentials that exist in this market, what each one tells you about teaching quality, how to check it without taking anyone's word, and the three questions that separate a subject specialist from a generalist who has read the syllabus once. It also covers the things certification cannot tell you, because the gap between a qualified teacher and the right teacher for your child is where most tutoring money is wasted.

At a glance

  • The permit a private tutor must hold is a MoHRE private tuition work permit, free and valid two years
  • The IB authorises schools; it does not license individual freelance tutors
  • A KHDA Educational Services Permit applies to a training institute with premises, not to a person
  • Abu Dhabi's ADEK ethics rules bar school staff from paid tutoring of their own enrolled students
  • A subject degree, a teaching qualification and classroom experience are three separate claims
  • Ask for documents before a first paid lesson, not after a disappointing one
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Certification questions change shape depending on which IB programme your child is in. A PYP parent is asking about generalist primary teaching; a DP parent is asking whether someone has taught a specific HL syllabus to examination. Here is how each programme sits in Dubai.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Assessment is a mix of externally marked papers and internally assessed work that the school marks and the IB moderates. This is the programme where subject specialism matters most, because a tutor who has taught Chemistry HL to examination knows things about the Paper 2 markscheme that no generalist does.

In Dubai the DP is concentrated in a set of IB World Schools in Emirates Hills, Al Barsha, Al Sufouh, Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Festival City, while the majority of the emirate's secondary cohort sits IGCSE then A Level instead. That makes DP subject teachers a smaller pool locally than the raw school count suggests, and it is why verifying a specialism matters more here than in a city where every school runs the Diploma.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, with command terms and task-specific clarifications doing most of the work. Reports arrive as criterion letters and numbers rather than percentages, which is why parents often cannot tell whether a 5 is a problem. A tutor who has written MYP task sheets can read that report; one who has not will guess.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 11 and then offer a choice between the Diploma and a British sixth form, so a Dubai MYP 5 student is often preparing for two different destinations at once. A tutor working with that student needs to know which criteria carry into DP internal assessment and which drop away, and should be able to name the MYP eAssessment option the school has chosen.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry rather than discrete subject syllabuses, ending in the Year 6 Exhibition. Credentials here look different: a primary teaching qualification and experience of inquiry-led planning matter more than a subject degree. Most useful tutoring at this stage is literacy fluency, number sense and the research habits the Exhibition rewards.

Dubai PYP cohorts are unusually mobile, with children arriving mid-unit from British, Indian and American systems. A tutor's job is often to close a specific gap created by that move rather than to follow the school's inquiry cycle. Arabic as an additional language also starts early in Dubai schools under KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements, and it is the most commonly requested primary support in the emirate.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining at least two DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills, service learning and language development. Students take DP subject papers alongside a vocational qualification, so tutoring demand is usually for the DP components and for the reflective project's research structure.

The CP is offered by only a handful of UAE schools, which means local tutor coverage for it is thin. A parent asking about certification for CP support should expect the honest answer to be about the DP courses inside it, because that is where documented subject teaching experience actually exists. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the match may come from our wider pool and the lesson still runs over video.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subject by subject, certification means something slightly different. Below is what to look for in a tutor for each of the subjects Dubai families ask about most, with the part of the course where an unqualified tutor is exposed fastest.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Ask which syllabus version the tutor last taught and whether they have supervised a Maths exploration through to submission. The exposure point is HL Paper 3: an extended problem-solving paper that rewards structured investigation rather than recall, and a tutor who has never set one cannot model the thinking.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics and modelling content differs enough from AA that teaching one does not qualify someone for the other. Ask about graphical-display-calculator fluency and regression work. Students lose marks presenting a model without justifying its fit, which a tutor who knows the markscheme flags immediately.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The current syllabus is organised around structure and reactivity with a single scientific investigation as internal assessment. Ask whether the tutor has marked that investigation against its criteria. Organic mechanisms and energetics calculations are where Dubai students most often lose marks they could have kept.

Physics

HL and SL

Check that the tutor can talk about uncertainty treatment, not just equations. Paper 2 extended-response questions punish answers that quote a law without applying it to the stated situation, and HL fields and nuclear content is where a generalist's limits show within one session.

Biology

HL and SL

Command-term discipline decides most grades here: outline, explain, discuss and evaluate carry different mark expectations. Ask the tutor to show how they would mark a six-mark answer. Statistical handling in the investigation is the other common weak point for Dubai cohorts.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and the use of real-world material decide the grade, and HL adds a quantitative paper that catches students who have only revised theory. Ask whether the tutor has supervised the internal assessment commentaries and can name the criteria used to mark them.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Verify experience of the individual oral and of unseen textual analysis, which are different skills taught by different kinds of teacher. Students lose marks by summarising rather than analysing, and HL candidates need a separate essay on a studied work that many tutors have never set.

Business Management

HL and SL

Ask which case-study material the tutor has worked from and how they teach tool selection under exam pressure. Answers that describe a concept without applying it to the stimulus lose the application marks, and the internal assessment's research-question framing is where most projects go wrong early.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A programming background does not automatically cover the paper-based theory, and the reverse is also true. Ask about the internal assessment solution-development documentation, which is marked on process evidence rather than on whether the program works.

Arabic as an Additional Language

Ab initio and B

KHDA requires Dubai private schools to teach Arabic regardless of the licensed curriculum, and requires that schools ensure teachers of Arabic have the authority's approval to teach it. For tutoring, ask about experience with the specific school stream your child sits, since Arab and non-Arab classes follow different expectations.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

TOK is assessed by an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. A tutor's role is questioning and feedback on the student's own thinking, never drafting. Ask how they coach the choice of prescribed title, because a poor title choice costs marks that no amount of later work recovers.

Extended Essay supervision support

Core

The school supervises the Extended Essay; a tutor can support research method, structure and the reflective process around it. Ask how they handle the boundary between coaching and authorship, and expect a clear answer. A tutor who is vague about that boundary is a risk to your child's candidature.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Every format below runs over live video. The differences are in session length, who sets the agenda and what you receive afterwards, which in turn changes what a tutor's credentials need to cover.

Weekly one-to-one subject sessions

A fixed slot each week with one tutor for one subject, usually sixty or ninety minutes depending on level. The tutor works from your child's own school materials and the current subject guide, and keeps a short written note of what was covered and what was set. This is the format where documented subject teaching experience earns its keep.

  • Same tutor each week so the diagnosis accumulates
  • Works from the school's scheme of work, not a generic course
  • Short written note after each session naming the next target
  • Session recording available on request for revision

Verification-first trial lesson

A free first lesson whose explicit purpose is for you to test the match. Bring a marked paper, an assessment report or a piece of returned work. A tutor who knows the course will tell you within twenty minutes where the marks went and why, which is more informative than any certificate.

  • No payment and no card details before the trial
  • Bring a marked script or a criterion report
  • Ask for the tutor's subject and level teaching history
  • Change the match afterwards at no cost if it is wrong

Short diagnostic block

Four to six sessions with a defined question: why is this student stuck at a 4, or what is wrong with this internal assessment plan. At the end you get a written summary and a recommendation, including the recommendation to stop if tutoring is not the answer. Families use this when they are unsure whether they need a long commitment.

  • A stated question and a written answer at the end
  • Useful before committing to a two-year DP plan
  • Includes a stop recommendation where that is honest
  • Can be run across two subjects with two specialists

Core-component coaching

Sessions focused on the Extended Essay process, Theory of Knowledge or an internal assessment plan. The work remains the student's throughout; the tutor asks questions, reviews what the student has already produced and gives feedback against published criteria. Nothing is drafted for the student at any stage.

  • Research-question framing and method critique
  • Feedback on the student's own existing draft
  • Reflection-session preparation for school meetings
  • A clear written boundary on what the tutor will not do

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a certified IB tutor in Dubai can and cannot hold

A certified IB tutor in Dubai can hold four kinds of credential that are real and checkable: an academic qualification in the subject, a teaching qualification such as a PGCE or an equivalent licence from another jurisdiction, a documented history of teaching or examining the course, and a UAE private tuition work permit. Everything else you will see advertised is either a restatement of one of those four or a claim about something that does not exist.

What nobody can hold is a licence from the International Baccalaureate to tutor privately. The IB authorises schools to deliver its programmes and runs professional development workshops for teachers at those schools. A teacher who has completed a category one workshop in Chemistry has evidence of training; they do not have a tutoring licence, and the distinction matters because the second claim is the one that gets used to justify a higher rate.

The other thing nobody holds is regulator endorsement of a tutoring service by name. KHDA regulates private schools in Dubai and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises and staff. That permit process begins with initial approval, allows a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and is renewed annually with the request filed at least thirty days before expiry. It is a real, specific thing, and a platform without it cannot borrow it.

The practical consequence is simple. When a profile says 'certified', read it as a prompt to ask which of the four real credentials is behind the word. A tutor who answers precisely, names the subject and level they taught and the years they taught it, is giving you more than a logo ever could. A tutor who repeats the word without a document is telling you something too.

The UAE private tuition permit, in the government's own words

  • Resolution: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Issued by: Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • Cost and validity: free of charge, two years
  • Route: MoHRE smart app, website or e-services, two working days
  • Eligible: school and sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, students aged 15-18

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted, and it is regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The federal portal u.ae states that the permit is granted free of charge for two years. Anyone quoting you a permit fee is either confusing it with something else or inventing it.

Eligibility is wider than most parents expect. The published list of people who may apply includes teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in both the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is titled 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fees, gives a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

There are conditions attached to holding one. The permit carries a code of conduct, and in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school. Press reporting of those rules describes the permit's code of conduct as barring the same thing. Treat that as reported rather than quoted, and verify it against the current ADEK document if your situation depends on it. Either way, the principle is sound: a parent should not be arranging private lessons with their child's own classroom teacher.

On enforcement, the official position is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published. A figure circulating online could not be verified against any ministry source, which is why you will not find one on this page.

A thirty-minute verification routine any parent can run

  • Bring one marked script, one report and one piece of returned coursework
  • Ask which syllabus version and which year they last taught it
  • Ask them to locate the lost marks on the script in front of you
  • Ask what they will refuse to do with an internal assessment draft
  • Ask to see the MoHRE permit; it costs nothing to hold

You do not need to be an educationalist to check a tutor. You need a marked piece of your child's work and four questions. The marked work does most of the job, because reading a script accurately is a skill that cannot be faked for twenty minutes by someone who has not taught the course.

Start by asking which syllabus version the tutor last taught and in which year. IB subject guides change, and a tutor whose knowledge stops at a superseded guide will teach content your child is not assessed on. Then ask them to look at the marked script and tell you where the marks went. A specialist will talk about command terms, about an answer that described when it should have evaluated, about a method mark lost for an unjustified step. A generalist will talk about confidence and revision technique.

The third question is about internal assessment. Ask what the tutor will and will not do with a draft. The only acceptable answer involves reading what the student has already written and asking questions about it. Any offer to restructure, rewrite or supply content is an academic-honesty problem for your child, not a service, and the IB treats it as malpractice. The fourth question is the permit: ask to see it, and note that it is free, so there is no reason for anyone to be coy.

Run the free trial lesson after those four answers, not before. Sit within earshot for the first ten minutes. You are listening for whether the tutor asks your child to do something within the first five minutes, or whether they explain for twenty. The second pattern is the single most reliable sign that a tutor has not taught one-to-one before, whatever their certificates say.

04

What certification cannot tell you, and what to use instead

The limits of certification are not a reason to ignore it. They are a reason to pair it with evidence. A fully qualified teacher with fifteen years in a classroom may be poor at one-to-one work, because the two jobs reward different instincts. Classroom teaching rewards explanation to a group; one-to-one rewards diagnosis of one person, and silence while that person works.

Subject fit is the second thing paper cannot capture. A Maths teacher who has spent a decade on Analysis and Approaches is not automatically right for an Applications and Interpretation student, because the statistics and modelling emphasis is genuinely different. A Physics graduate may be excellent on mechanics and weak on the uncertainty treatment that the internal assessment is marked on. Ask about the specific part of the course where your child is stuck.

Temperament is third, and it decides more outcomes than either of the others. A DP2 student six weeks from final examinations needs someone who will cut the syllabus down to what can still move marks. A DP1 student who has lost confidence after a bad first term needs someone who will rebuild the basics without making the student feel remedial. Those are different people, and no certificate distinguishes them.

This is why a free trial lesson is the centre of our process rather than a marketing device. Credentials narrow the field; the trial picks from it. If the trial does not work, you say so and we match again, and nothing has been spent. That is a more honest offer than any badge, and it is the part of the process parents in Dubai tell us actually changed their decision.

05

What the Dubai market charges, and what certification does to the number

Rates in Dubai sort themselves by what a tutor can demonstrate, and the spread is wide. Published figures across the market show budget online tutoring, often delivered by university students, starting around AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200.

Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tutoring runs higher, in the region of AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table reaching AED 450 and beyond for exam-year specialists. The top of the market, where a named or examiner-experienced tutor is advertised, reaches AED 650 at BartyED. In-home visits carry their own band, roughly AED 180 to 500 once travel is included, because somebody is paying for the car.

Those are market figures published by other providers, with their names attached so you can check them. They are not IB Gram's price list. What they tell you is the shape of the market: the single biggest driver of rate is demonstrated specialism at the level being taught, and the second biggest is format, because travel is expensive in a city this spread out. A permit, being free, moves the rate not at all.

Monthly packages advertised in the emirate include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work. Use those as a sanity check on any quote you are given.

The academic-honesty line a credentialled tutor will not cross

  • The student writes every submitted word, including every revision
  • A tutor asks questions, reviews and gives criterion-based feedback
  • The school supervisor holds formal responsibility for the Extended Essay
  • Published syllabus documents and past papers are referenced and linked, never redistributed
  • Any offer of finished coursework is a malpractice risk to the candidate

Every piece of internally assessed IB work has to be the student's own. That covers the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, every subject's internal assessment and the MYP personal project. A tutor's legitimate role is to teach the skills, ask questions about the student's existing material, and give feedback against the published criteria. The student types every word that is submitted.

This is not a soft boundary. The IB treats the submission of work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice, and the consequences land on the student, not on the tutor who helped. In this market that matters, because at least one site competing for these searches openly sells finished internal assessments at a fixed price. A parent who buys that is buying a risk to their child's entire candidature.

So the honest version of coursework support looks slower than the advertised version. A tutor reads a research question and asks whether it can actually be answered in the word limit. They look at a method and ask what the uncontrolled variable is. They read a paragraph and ask what the evidence is for its claim. They hand it back. The student fixes it. Then the school supervisor, who is the person formally responsible, sees the next draft.

Ask any tutor you are considering what they would refuse to do. The answer tells you more about their professionalism than a certificate scan. A tutor who says they will not restructure a draft, will not supply paragraphs and will not work on anything the school has not seen is a tutor who understands the rules your child is bound by.

07

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies sit alongside the IB in Dubai

Dubai parents often discover partway through the Diploma that the subjects their child must take are not only the IB ones. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were set to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. This is a federal principle applied by the emirate: private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must follow the ministry's general regulations.

The organisational detail matters for tutoring. KHDA requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, and the school's licensed-curriculum language applies for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and the guidance advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools are also required to ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic have the appropriate approval from KHDA to teach those subjects, which is a concrete credential point a parent can ask about at school level.

For tutoring, the practical rule is to match the stream. A non-Arab student in Arabic as an additional language is assessed differently from an Arab student in Arabic as a first language, and a tutor needs to know which one your child sits before the first session. One more constraint: for the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the ministry is prohibited, so tutoring here follows the school's material rather than importing a parallel course.

08

Who regulates what, across the seven emirates

A Dubai parent moving within the UAE, or comparing schools across emirates, quickly finds that the authority in charge changes. Dubai private schools answer to KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain answer to the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there. ADEK is named by effectively none of the competing tutoring pages in this market, which is an odd gap given how many families move between the two emirates.

Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate. Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, which does the same there. For Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools directly. Those five bodies are the complete regulator map for UAE private schools.

The scope differs in ways that affect parents. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so curriculum and fee approval sits with the emirate regulator rather than only inspection. In Dubai, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under the second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total.

Why this belongs on a page about tutor credentials: the regulator that matters for your child's school is not the body that permits your tutor. The school answers to KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the RAK Department of Knowledge or the ministry. The individual tutor answers to MoHRE. Conflating the two is how 'regulator-approved tutor' claims get made, and it is why a parent who understands the split is much harder to mislead.

Availability is the thing tutoring sites hide, and hiding it wastes a fortnight of a parent's time. The real position in Dubai is that common subjects at common levels can usually be matched quickly, and that narrow combinations cannot. Maths AA SL has depth. Chemistry HL in the eight weeks before final examinations does not, because every family in the emirate wants the same slot at the same time.

When we cannot put forward a UAE-based specialist for your subject and level, we say so, and the match comes from our wider pool of IB subject teachers working in other time zones. The lesson still runs one-to-one over live video at a Dubai-friendly time, because Gulf Standard Time overlaps comfortably with both South Asia and Europe. What changes is the tutor's location, not the format or the subject depth.

There are also requests we should decline. If a student needs a diagnosed learning-support intervention, a tutor is not the right answer and a specialist assessment is. If a family wants finished coursework, the answer is no. If a DP2 student has four subjects collapsing at once and three weeks left, the honest conversation is about which two can still move and which cannot, not about selling eight sessions a week.

The reason to publish this is that a coverage limit disclosed in advance is a smaller problem than one discovered in week three. Ask any platform you are considering the same question: what happens if you cannot find someone for my subject? An answer that includes a fallback and a timescale is worth more than a promise that it never happens.

Where we tutor

Where in Dubai families ask these questions

Verification questions arrive differently across the emirate. In the IB-dense communities parents are comparing a tutor against the subject teacher they already have; in the British-curriculum belts they are often checking whether a tutor understands the Diploma at all.

Al Barsha

Dense with large through-schools running both IB and British routes. Parents here frequently ask whether a tutor has taught the Diploma specifically, because their own school offers two post-16 paths and advice gets mixed.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Long-established IB Diploma catchment. Requests concentrate on HL sciences and Maths AA HL, and parents tend to arrive with a mock paper already marked, asking whether the tutor can read it properly.

Al Sufouh

A cluster of senior schools within a short radius, which means families often know several tutors by reputation. The verification question here is usually about permit status rather than subject depth.

Oud Metha

Older established schools with large cohorts and strong Indian-curriculum presence alongside IGCSE. Parents comparing a Diploma tutor with a CBSE-trained one need the difference in assessment style spelled out.

Al Qusais

High demand for maths and science support at middle-school level, often for siblings at the same time. Scheduling two consecutive online sessions after the school run is the practical constraint families raise first.

Mirdif

Villa communities feeding a mix of British and American schools, with MYP families asking how criterion grades translate into something they can act on.

Nad Al Sheba

Newer senior provision and a fast-growing DP intake. Families here are often in their first year of the Diploma and want to know which credential signals actual DP teaching experience.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

A large student population across several schools, with a lot of mid-year arrivals. Tutoring requests are commonly about closing a syllabus gap created by a move rather than about long-term weakness.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

IB World Schools in western Dubai

These schools sit within a short radius of each other and between them cover PYP, MYP and the Diploma. Students from them make up a large share of DP tutoring requests in the emirate, and their internal assessment deadline calendars differ by several weeks, which matters when planning a block of sessions.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the specifics, not the symptom

Subject, level, syllabus version, the school, and the piece of work that prompted the call. A marked mock paper or a criterion report is worth more than a description of how the term has gone, because it shows us what to look for in a tutor.

  2. 02

    We shortlist on demonstrable fit

We put forward a tutor whose teaching history covers your child's exact subject and level, and we tell you what that history is. If we cannot cover the combination from UAE-based tutors, we say so at this point and explain where the match would come from instead.

  3. 03

Run the free trial and interrogate it

A full first lesson at no cost. Ask the four verification questions, listen to how the tutor reads the marked script, and watch whether your child is working within the first five minutes. Decide afterwards, not before.

  4. 04

    Agree the plan in writing

Frequency, session length, the first target and the date you will review it. For DP families this usually means naming the internal assessment deadline or mock window the plan is built around, so progress is measured against the school's calendar.

  5. 05

    Review at the fourth session

Four sessions is enough to see movement in technique even when it has not yet shown in a grade. We look at what the tutor's notes say, what the student says, and what the next marked piece of work shows. If the match is wrong, we change it.

  6. 06

    Change or stop without friction

A different tutor at no extra cost if the match is not working, and a clear recommendation to stop if tutoring is not what the student needs. Neither of those should require a difficult conversation, and neither is treated as a failure.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We name what we are not

IB Gram is a matching platform with no board accreditation, no regulator endorsement and no premises in the UAE. Saying so plainly is the first credential check a parent can make, because a provider that overstates its own status will overstate its tutors' too.

Subject specialism before seniority

We match on the exact subject and level, not on a general reputation for being good at science or maths. The Analysis and Approaches versus Applications and Interpretation split, and the HL Paper 3 requirement, are the kind of detail the match is made on.

A trial that is genuinely free

No payment and no card details before the first lesson, and no obligation afterwards. The condition is simply that it is one lesson, so you can test the match rather than sample a course.

Published boundaries on coursework

We state on every page what a tutor will and will not do with internally assessed work. The student writes it; the tutor asks questions and gives feedback against the criteria. That protects your child's candidature, which is the thing actually at stake.

Figures with sources attached

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate study that published it, with the month it was read. We do not present market bands as our own prices, and we do not publish statistics about ourselves that we cannot evidence.

Coverage limits disclosed up front

If no UAE-based specialist is free for your subject and level, we say so before you commit and explain where the match would come from. The lesson format does not change; the tutor's location does.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does 'certified IB tutor' actually mean in Dubai?+

It has no single official meaning, because the International Baccalaureate authorises schools rather than licensing individual tutors. In practice the word stands in for one of four checkable things: a degree in the subject, a teaching qualification, a documented record of teaching or examining the course, or the UAE private tuition work permit. Ask which one is meant. A tutor who answers by naming the subject and level they taught, the years they taught it and the type of school is giving you real information. A tutor who repeats the word without a document is not, and in a market this large that distinction is worth thirty seconds of your time.

Which permit must a private IB tutor in Dubai hold?+

A private tuition work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. According to u.ae it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page gives a two-working-day completion time via its smart app, website or e-services system. Eligible applicants include school and sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The official position is that anyone giving private lessons without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no schedule of amounts has been published.

How can I check that a tutor's IB teaching experience is real?+

Hand them a marked script from your child and ask where the marks went. Someone who has taught the course will talk about command terms, about an answer that described where it should have evaluated, about a method mark lost to an unjustified step. Someone who has not will talk about revision technique and confidence. Then ask which syllabus version they last taught and in which year, because subject guides change and a tutor working from a superseded one will teach content your child is not assessed on. Those two checks take twenty minutes and are more revealing than any certificate.

Is there such a thing as an official IB tutor qualification?+

No. The IB authorises schools to deliver its programmes and runs professional development workshops for teachers working at those schools. A teacher who has completed a subject workshop has evidence of programme-specific training, which is genuinely useful, but it is training rather than a tutoring licence. Nobody holds a licence from the IB to tutor privately, so any profile implying one is describing something that does not exist. Ask instead for the workshop category, the subject and the year, alongside the teaching history. That combination tells you what the person has actually been trained on.

Can a teacher at my child's Dubai school tutor my child privately?+

Treat it as a problem rather than a shortcut. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and press reporting describes the MoHRE permit's code of conduct as barring the same arrangement. Verify the current wording against the authority's own document if it matters to your decision. The underlying principle holds across the UAE: the person who assesses your child's internal work should not also be paid privately to prepare it. An independent tutor avoids that conflict entirely.

Does KHDA issue a licence to individual private tutors?+

No. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, and it issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes that operate from premises with staff. That process starts with initial approval, allows a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and is renewed annually with the request filed at least thirty days before expiry. It attaches to a business and an address, not to a person teaching from a laptop. Individual tutors are covered by the MoHRE permit instead, and the two are frequently conflated in advertising.

What documents should I ask a certified IB tutor in Dubai to show me?+

Four things, in this order. The MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free to hold so there is no reason for reluctance. A degree certificate or transcript for the subject, with the institution and year. A teaching qualification or licence, with the issuing jurisdiction and year. And a teaching history naming subject, level, years and school type, which is the item that most predicts whether a session will be useful. If someone declines all four, that is your answer. If they supply all four, you still run the free trial lesson before deciding.

Do university students in Dubai qualify for a private tuition permit?+

Yes. The published eligibility list on u.ae includes university students, alongside teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals and school students aged 15 to 18. Holding the permit makes the arrangement lawful; it says nothing about subject depth. A second-year undergraduate may be excellent for MYP maths homework support and quite unsuitable for Chemistry HL eight weeks before final papers. Market rates reflect that: published budget bands featuring student tutors sit far below the specialist bands, which is a rational pricing signal rather than a judgement.

Is a subject degree more useful than a teaching qualification for IB tutoring?+

They answer different questions and the better tutor usually has evidence of both plus course-specific experience. A degree shows content knowledge above syllabus level, which matters for HL extension work and for explaining why a method works. A teaching qualification shows trained pedagogy and assessed practice, which matters for sequencing and for diagnosing a misconception rather than re-explaining. Neither tells you whether the person knows this syllabus version, how its internal assessment is marked, or where candidates habitually drop marks. That comes from having taught the course to examination, which is the credential to ask about last and weight most.

How long does a UAE private tuition work permit stay valid?+

Two years, and u.ae states that it is granted free of charge. MoHRE's own service page for it is titled 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fees, and gives a two-working-day completion time through the smart app, website and e-services system. When you ask to see a permit, check the issue date rather than only the document itself, since a lapsed permit is the same position as no permit. The permit also carries a code of conduct, so it is reasonable to ask the tutor what conditions they understand themselves to be working under.

What should I do if a tutoring website says a regulator has endorsed it?+

Ask for the permit number and the licensed address, then check them. The only Dubai permit that could support such a claim is a KHDA Educational Services Permit held by a training institute with premises, and it is specific enough to be verified. If a site cannot produce a number, the claim is decoration. The same test applies to board names: the IB, Cambridge and Pearson do not accredit tutoring platforms, so a logo on a website proves nothing about teaching quality. IB Gram holds no such permit and makes no such claim, which is why this page explains the difference rather than borrowing the authority.

Does a certified tutor still need to know my child's exact subject guide?+

Yes, and this is where most mismatches happen. IB subject guides are revised, and a revision can change the number of papers, the internal assessment task and the content that is examinable. A tutor who last taught a superseded guide will teach accurately and uselessly. Before the first session, send the tutor the school's course outline and the assessment calendar, and ask them to confirm which guide version your child is sitting. A specialist will already be asking you that question. It takes one message and it prevents a term of well-delivered lessons aimed at the wrong target.

How do I verify a tutor's identity before a first online lesson?+

Ask for the lesson to begin with camera on and for the tutor to confirm their full name, the subject and level they are teaching and their teaching background in the first minute, with you present. Match that against what you were sent in writing beforehand. Keep the first session in a shared room rather than a bedroom, and keep the lesson on the platform's own link rather than a personal channel. For a child, the practical safeguarding rules matter as much as the credential: a named adult in the house knows when the session runs and can see the screen.

Can one verified tutor cover both Maths AA and Physics for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth testing rather than assuming. Plenty of physics teachers are strong on the mechanics and calculus overlap, and a single tutor reduces scheduling friction and gives one person the whole picture of a student's week. The limits appear at Higher Level, where Maths AA Paper 3 and the physics internal assessment reward quite different skills. Our usual approach is to try one tutor for both in the trial, look at how they handle the weaker of the two subjects, and split into two specialists if that answer is thin. The decision is made on the trial, not on the CV.

What happens if the tutor we start with turns out to be the wrong match?+

You tell us and we match again at no additional cost. It is worth distinguishing two situations, because they need different responses. If the subject knowledge is thin, change tutor. If the subject knowledge is fine but the student is not engaging, the issue may be session design rather than the person, and a change of format or time often fixes it. We review at the fourth session for exactly this reason: four sessions is enough to see whether technique is moving, even before a grade does, and early enough that a term has not been lost.

Start by checking, then test the match

If you are looking for a certified IB tutor in Dubai, spend the first thirty minutes on verification rather than on comparison shopping. Ask which credential the word stands for, ask for the MoHRE permit, and hand the tutor a marked script to read in front of you. Then run a free trial lesson and watch how quickly your child is asked to do something. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one over live video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time around a Dubai school week, with the subject and level matched to your child's actual syllabus version. Tell us the subject, the level and the school, and we will tell you honestly what we can cover.
