IB MYP Tutor in Umm Suqeim

Finding an IB MYP tutor in Umm Suqeim is harder to verify than finding an IGCSE one, because the MYP has no past papers to test anybody against. This page gives you the documents to request from the school, the programme vocabulary that lets you read them, and an interview that exposes whether a tutor has actually taught the programme. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

  • The four school documents that make MYP tutoring possible, and how to ask
  • Key concepts, global contexts and statements of inquiry explained in plain terms
  • An interview that works without a past paper to test against
  • Tutors teach and give feedback; the Personal Project stays the student's own

IB & IGCSE in Umm Suqeim

The verification problem nobody warns MYP parents about

There is a practical reason MYP parents in Umm Suqeim struggle to choose a tutor, and it has nothing to do with how many are available. With an IGCSE subject you can test somebody in five minutes: ask which board, which syllabus code, which tier, what each paper is worth. Those facts are public, checkable and specific, and a tutor who does not know them has disqualified themselves. The MYP offers none of that. There are no past papers, no syllabus codes, no published paper weightings and no tier. There is a framework, and a tutor either understands it or does not, and from the outside the two look identical.

That is why the usual advice - ask about their experience, look at reviews, see if your child likes them - fails here more than anywhere else in the market. A tutor can be an excellent mathematician and a strong teacher and still be no use for MYP Mathematics, because MYP Mathematics is marked against four criteria with published descriptors and a task-specific clarification written by the teacher for that unit, and a tutor who teaches content without reading the clarification is marking a different exercise from the one the school is marking.

So this page is a verification toolkit rather than a sales page. It tells you which four documents to request from the school and what each one reveals. It explains the programme vocabulary - key concepts, related concepts, global contexts, statements of inquiry, Approaches to Learning - that appears in every unit planner and almost never in a conversation with a parent. It gives you an interview that works in the absence of a past paper. And it covers the one decision the MYP builds towards, which is what happens at the end of MYP 5.

On availability, the honest picture for this area. International Baccalaureate schools account for 7% of Dubai private-school enrolment, in a market of 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula. The MYP is a minority programme inside that minority, and the pool of tutors who have genuinely taught it is correspondingly small and distributed by where the IB schools are - Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Emirates Hills - rather than by residential street. Requiring one of them to also be near Umm Suqeim at 5pm on a Tuesday is how a request becomes unfillable.

IB Gram therefore teaches Umm Suqeim students one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer in India only. For MYP work the trade is especially favourable, because the material is the school's own unit documents and the student's own marked tasks, all of which share better on a screen than across a table.

At a glance

  • No past papers means the usual way of testing a tutor does not work
  • Four school documents make MYP tutoring possible: ask for all of them
  • Every unit is framed by a key concept, related concepts and a global context
  • Approaches to Learning skills are marked inside subject criteria, not separately
  • A tutor who has not read the task-specific clarification is marking a different task
  • MYP specialists cluster around IB schools, not around residential areas
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP is the middle five years of the IB continuum and the only stage where the assessment language is entirely internal. Understanding where it sits explains why its tutoring works differently from the stages either side of it.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary and inquiry-led, with descriptive reporting and no external assessment, closing with the Year 6 Exhibition. Children leave the PYP able to ask good questions and frequently without the writing volume that MYP criteria will start demanding in Year 7.

Several PYP schools serve families in Umm Suqeim and along the coast. The useful thing a parent can do in Year 5 or 6 is build writing stamina, because the volume expected by MYP Criterion C in Language and Literature catches PYP children out far more often than the content does.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 (MYP 1-5)

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked out of 8, converted to a 1-7 grade by school-set boundaries. Units are built around key concepts, related concepts and global contexts, with Approaches to Learning skills taught across subjects. MYP 5 includes the Personal Project and, at some schools, eAssessment.

This is the programme in your search. Around Umm Suqeim the MYP sits beside British-curriculum schools running IGCSE in the same year groups, which means local advice about tutors, revision guides and past papers is usually advice about a different system entirely.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, scored out of 45 points. Assessment becomes largely external, with Internal Assessments carrying around a fifth of most subject grades. UAE schools sit the May session.

The MYP's reflective and investigative criteria map directly onto DP Internal Assessment demands, which makes a student's MYP criterion profile a genuine predictor of how they will handle DP coursework. That is a more useful conversation in MYP 4 than in the week option forms are due.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Rare in Dubai and worth checking against the current KHDA school listing rather than an older guide, since availability shifts year to year.

Where it is offered within reach of Umm Suqeim, the MYP Personal Project turns out to be good preparation for the CP reflective project, because both are assessed on documented process rather than on a finished artefact. The same academic-honesty boundary applies to both.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The MYP's eight subject groups each carry four criteria. Below are the groups, with the criterion that most often holds a student back in each - which is the information a tutor needs before a first session.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended, MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating patterns, C Communicating, D Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. B asks for a conjecture tested and generalised; D asks for a real model built and then criticised. Fluent students stall on both because neither rewards getting the answer.

Sciences

Integrated or separate, MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Inquiring and designing, C Processing and evaluating, D Reflecting on the impacts of science. D is the most common low mark across Dubai MYP cohorts because the ethical and global dimension is the part a crowded scheme of work covers last.

Language and Literature

English, Arabic and other school languages

Criteria A Analysing, B Organizing, C Producing text, D Using language. Confident readers score on A and lose B, because their essays have insight and no visible structure. C and D separate craft from accuracy, so a stylish error-strewn piece drops only on D.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria A Comprehending spoken and visual text, B Comprehending written and visual text, C Communicating, D Using language. Phase placement matters more than year group, and a child advanced a phase too early looks weak on all four criteria when the real issue is placement.

Individuals and Societies

History, Geography, Economics strands

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating, C Communicating, D Thinking critically. D separates the top grades: it wants sources interrogated, perspectives weighed and limitations named, which is a different activity from knowing more.

Design

Product and Digital Design

Criteria A Inquiring and analysing, B Developing ideas, C Creating the solution, D Evaluating. The design cycle is the assessment, so a student who builds something impressive and documents nothing keeps C and loses the other three. Thinly staffed by tutors anywhere in Dubai.

Arts

Visual Arts, Music, Drama

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Developing skills, C Thinking creatively, D Responding. The process journal is the evidence base for B and C, and a missing journal caps the grade whatever the finished work looks like.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Planning for performance, C Applying and performing, D Reflecting and improving performance. Able athletes routinely score at the top on C and near the bottom on B and D, because both are written tasks treated as paperwork.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed on the synthesis of two or more subject groups against their own criteria. Schools run them very differently, so the task-specific clarification is essential rather than helpful - assuming it mirrors a single-subject rubric is a reliable way to lose marks.

Personal Project

MYP 5, Year 11

Criteria A Planning, B Applying skills, C Reflecting, assessed on the process journal and report rather than on the product. A tutor may teach project management, questioning and reflective writing; the project and every word of the report must be the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

MYP tutoring divides into three jobs, and they need different preparation from the tutor. All three run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly work on one subject group and one criterion

A single MYP subject group with a named target criterion, worked weekly from the school's own task-specific clarifications and the student's marked summatives. The target is agreed in writing at the start, because an MYP plan without a named criterion becomes general subject revision within three weeks.

  • Target criterion named and written down before lesson one
  • Work built from the school's clarification grid, not a generic scheme
  • Feedback phrased in descriptor bands rather than percentages
  • Session timed to Gulf Standard Time after the commute home

Pre-summative criterion clinic

Two to four sessions before a specific summative task. The student brings the task sheet and the clarification grid; the tutor works through what the top band requires for that task and what the current draft is missing. Suited to a student who understands the content and keeps losing marks on how the reasoning is presented.

  • Scheduled around the school's assessment calendar
  • One or two criteria, not the whole subject group
  • Ends with the student's own improved draft, written by the student
  • Repeatable per subject without a weekly commitment

MYP 5 transition and Personal Project coaching

Support in the final MYP year on the Personal Project process and on the move into the Diploma Programme, A Levels or another route. Teaching covers project management, journalling, reflective writing and the skills a DP Internal Assessment will demand. Nothing is written for the student.

  • Journal habits that generate real evidence for Criterion B
  • Reflection prompts that get past 'I learned a lot'
  • Honest reading of the criterion profile against DP coursework demands
  • Academic-honesty boundaries agreed explicitly in the first session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Suqeim

01

The four documents that make MYP tutoring possible

An IB MYP tutor in Umm Suqeim cannot work from a past paper, because none exists. What they can work from is the school's own documentation, and most parents do not know it exists or that they are entitled to ask for it. The table below lists the four documents worth requesting, what each one is, and what it reveals. Gathering them takes one email and makes the difference between criterion-level teaching and general subject revision.

The most important of the four is the task-specific clarification. For each summative task, the teacher rewrites the generic criterion descriptors in the language of that particular unit: what 'investigating patterns' means for this specific investigation, what counts as a justified conclusion in this context. It is the document the marking was actually done against, and a tutor who has it can explain a lost mark precisely. A tutor who does not have it is guessing, however well they know the subject.

The second is the unit planner or its summary, which names the key concept, the related concepts, the global context and the statement of inquiry for the unit. Those four things frame everything the student is being asked to do, and they are the reason an MYP question can look like it is about one thing while being assessed on another. The third is the marked summative itself, with the teacher's comments and the criterion marks awarded. The fourth is the school's grade boundary table, which converts the raw total out of 32 into the 1-7 grade on the report.

Schools generally share all four willingly when asked for a specific reason. Ask by email, name the unit, and say you want to support your child's work at home. Where a school declines, the marked task and the report card alone still support useful work, but the first session will spend time on reconstruction that the clarification grid would have made unnecessary.

02

The vocabulary every MYP unit is built on, in plain terms

  • 16 key concepts connect subjects across the whole programme
  • Related concepts are subject-specific and narrower
  • 6 global contexts give each unit its real-world framing
  • The statement of inquiry is the sentence the unit answers
  • A correct answer that ignores the inquiry scores as the descriptor says, not as the knowledge deserves

Four words appear in every MYP unit planner and almost never in a conversation with a parent: key concept, related concept, global context and statement of inquiry. They are not decoration. They determine what a task is assessing, which is why a student can produce a technically correct piece of work and score in the middle.

A key concept is one of sixteen broad ideas the programme uses to connect subjects - change, systems, relationships, identity, form, logic, perspective, time place and space, and so on. A related concept is subject-specific and narrower: in Sciences, something like evidence or function; in Mathematics, something like representation or generalisation. A global context is one of six framings that give the unit its real-world purpose: identities and relationships; orientation in space and time; personal and cultural expression; scientific and technical innovation; globalization and sustainability; and fairness and development. A statement of inquiry is a single sentence combining the key concept, the related concepts and the global context, and it is the sentence the whole unit answers.

Here is why it matters practically. A Sciences unit with the key concept 'change', related concept 'transformation' and the global context 'scientific and technical innovation' will set a task whose top-band descriptor rewards explaining a transformation in an innovation context - not reciting the chemistry. A student who writes an excellent account of the reaction and never addresses the context scores exactly as the descriptor says they should, which is lower than their knowledge deserves. The parent sees an unfair mark. The teacher sees a student who did not answer the inquiry.

The fifth piece of vocabulary is Approaches to Learning, and it is covered in the next section. Together, these five terms are what a tutor must be fluent in to be useful in the MYP. A tutor who cannot say what a global context is, or who treats the statement of inquiry as a title, is going to teach good lessons on the wrong target - which is the specific failure this page exists to help you avoid.

03

Approaches to Learning: the skills marked inside subject criteria

The MYP teaches five categories of Approaches to Learning skills - communication, social, self-management, research and thinking - broken into clusters such as collaboration, organisation, affective skills, reflection, information literacy, media literacy, critical thinking, creative thinking and transfer. They are not a separate subject and usually do not appear as a separate grade. They are taught across subjects and then assessed inside subject criteria, which is why a student can be marked down for something nobody ever called a subject.

The table below maps the categories onto where they actually cost marks. A student with weak self-management loses Criterion B marks in Design and Arts because the process journal is thin. A student with weak research skills loses Criterion B in Individuals and Societies because sources are collected rather than selected. A student with weak thinking-skill development loses the top band of Criterion D almost everywhere, because every subject group's D criterion asks for some version of evaluation, reflection or critical judgement.

This is the single most useful idea for a parent reading an MYP report card for the first time. If the same criterion letter is low across several unrelated subjects, the problem is almost certainly an Approaches to Learning skill rather than four separate subject weaknesses. Low D marks in Sciences, Individuals and Societies and Mathematics together point at critical thinking and reflection, not at a child who happens to be bad at three things. One tutor working on that skill inside one subject often lifts the others, which is both cheaper and more effective than three subject tutors.

It also explains why MYP tutoring sometimes looks unlike tutoring. A session spent teaching a student how to keep a usable process journal, or how to interrogate a source rather than summarise it, or how to write a reflection that names a specific decision and its consequence, is subject teaching in the MYP's terms even though no content was covered. A parent expecting content coverage should be told that in advance rather than left wondering what they paid for.

APPROACHES TO LEARNING AND WHERE THEY COST MARKS
ATL categorySkill clustersWhere a weakness shows up in criterion marksWhat a session on it looks like
ThinkingCritical, creative, transferCriterion D in most subject groupsInterrogating a claim rather than restating it
ResearchInformation literacy, media literacyCriterion B in Individuals and Societies and SciencesSelecting and evaluating sources, not collecting them
Self-managementOrganisation, affective, reflectionCriterion B and C in Design, Arts and PHEBuilding a process journal that generates evidence
CommunicationCommunication skillsCriterion C across every subject groupStructuring an answer so the reasoning is visible
SocialCollaborationInterdisciplinary and group summativesDocumenting a contribution so it can be assessed
04

How to interview an MYP tutor when there is no paper to test them on

  • Name the four criteria for the subject group - paraphrase means no experience
  • Define a global context - the answer is immediate or it is not
  • Ask what they want from the school: clarification grid and marked summative
  • Give them a 7, 7, 6, 2 profile and listen to the diagnosis
  • Any claim of IB, KHDA or Ministry approval ends the conversation

Without syllabus codes and paper weightings, verification has to rest on programme vocabulary and on how the tutor proposes to start. The useful questions are few and the answers are hard to fake. Ask what the four criteria are for the subject group in question; a tutor who has taught it names them, and a tutor who has not gives a plausible paraphrase. Ask what a global context is; the answer is either immediate or it is not. Ask what they would want from the school before the first lesson; the right answer is the clarification grid and the marked summative, and anything else is a tutor who intends to teach their own scheme.

Then ask two questions about judgement. What would you do if my child's grade is a 5 with criterion marks of 7, 7, 6 and 2? The answer should be that the three high marks are not the problem and the single 2 is, and that the first job is to find out whether that criterion is weak in other subjects too. And what will you do about the Personal Project? The answer should name the boundary unprompted: teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own journal and report, with no drafting, rewriting or editing of any part of it.

One answer should end the conversation. If a tutor says they are IB approved, IB certified or IB accredited, that is not a status available to private tutors - the IB authorises schools to deliver its programmes, not individuals or companies to tutor them. Nor do KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education approve individual tutors; KHDA issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises, which is a different thing entirely. A tutor who claims any of this is either careless about a claim a UAE regulator takes seriously or is repeating marketing they have not examined.

Finally, ask about the permit that does apply. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing'. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so any amount circulating online is unverified.

05

What MYP tutoring costs, and why the market is built for a different product

The Dubai tutoring market is built around examination boards, and that shapes what your money buys. Published budget rates start at AED 33-52 an hour from Tutopiya and AED 45-65 from EdFlik, and at that level the product is supervision and question-bank drilling. For an IGCSE student that has real value. For an MYP student it has almost none, because there are no past papers to drill and the marks are awarded against descriptors the tutor has not read. This is the clearest case of genuinely wasted spending in this market, and it is the one families in Umm Suqeim fall into most often because the price looks like a sensible first step.

The band that works for MYP is the qualified subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, where Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, rising into the specialist band at AED 200-450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai guidance putting specialists at AED 200-450 or more. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500-650, BartyED publishing AED 650 - and examiner status is close to meaningless for the MYP, since the assessment is internal and teacher-marked. In-home visits run AED 180-500 with travel included, Bestimate quoting AED 180-350.

In monthly terms, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session are AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, with advertised packages at AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Set against school fees, which KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, one subject group at the mid band is a modest addition and three is not.

The MYP-specific buying advice is therefore unusually simple. Pay for criterion literacy, which lives in the middle band, and do not pay for examiner credentials or question banks, which are products designed for a different assessment system. Ask what the rate buys per 60 minutes, whether VAT is included, what the cancellation terms are, and whether the tutor will work from your school's clarification grid. Every figure above is another provider's published rate read during the October 2026 research round, quoted as market context rather than as an IB Gram price list.

06

The end of MYP 5: eAssessment, and choosing the next route

Two things happen at the end of MYP 5 and families often conflate them. The first is eAssessment, which not every MYP school in Dubai enters students for. Where a school does enter, MYP 5 results come from a mixture of on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios alongside the Personal Project, leading to the MYP Certificate. Where a school does not, MYP 5 ends with internal reporting and the student moves on without an external MYP result. Ask your MYP coordinator which applies, because it changes what Year 11 should look like.

This page deliberately publishes no certificate point threshold. The requirements for the MYP Certificate should come from the IB or from the school's coordinator rather than from a tutoring page, and the same applies to session and results dates: UAE schools sit the May session, and ibo.org is the only place to confirm specifics. Several pages in this market quote IB dates confidently from secondary sources, and a date a parent acts on is not a detail to get approximately right.

The second thing is the route decision - Diploma Programme, A Levels, or another option - and this is where a student's five-year criterion profile earns its keep. Strong investigation and reflection marks travel well into DP Internal Assessments, because the demands are structurally similar: a question framed, a method justified, data handled honestly, limitations named. A student carrying consistent 3s and 4s on reflective criteria will find the DP's coursework load heavier than its content, and that is worth knowing in MYP 4 rather than discovering in DP1.

The useful tutoring contribution here is evidence rather than advice. A tutor can say what the criterion profile suggests about coursework readiness and can teach the skills that close the gap. The decision itself belongs to the family, the school and the IB coordinator who knows the child, and any provider framing tutoring as necessary for progression has invented an urgency the programme does not contain.

Starting from Umm Suqeim, and the limits worth knowing first

  • Gather the four school documents before booking anything
  • Send subject group, year, criterion marks and the marked task
  • Free full-length trial lesson, judged on criterion language
  • Weekly slot from about 5pm Gulf Standard Time; post-Iftar in Ramadan
  • Design, Arts, some Language Acquisition phases and interdisciplinary units are thin

Begin by gathering documents rather than by booking anything. Request the task-specific clarification for the most recent summative, the unit overview, the marked task itself and the grade boundary table. Send us the subject group, the year, the criterion marks from the latest report and whatever the school provides. From that we can tell you whether you need subject teaching, criterion technique or an Approaches to Learning skill, and those are three different tutors rather than three amounts of the same one.

Then the usual sequence: we match on subject group and MYP experience, you take a full-length trial lesson at no cost with your child's own marked task on screen, and you judge whether the tutor talks in criterion and descriptor language or in topics. Sessions run weekly in Gulf Standard Time, usually from 5pm for a student commuting back to Umm Suqeim from Al Sufouh or Al Barsha. Ramadan timings move to post-Iftar slots, and sessions can pause through a heavy summative week.

The disclosure. MYP Design, MYP Arts and several Language Acquisition phases are thinly covered by tutors anywhere in Dubai, and a request in those areas may be answered with a waiting position rather than a tutor. Interdisciplinary units are harder again, because the assessment varies so much between schools. We would rather say that than place somebody who is learning the framework alongside your child while you pay specialist rates. No competitor page in this cluster discloses a coverage limit at all, which is informative in itself.

And the fixed limits. No home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. No claimed approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson - IB Gram holds none, and a provider claiming any of them should worry you. No writing, drafting, rewriting or editing of a Personal Project, a journal, an Internal Assessment or any assessed work. No reproduction of IB documents; we reference and link the official sources and work from your school's own materials. No grade promises, and no statistics about our own outcomes without the sample, date and method that would make them mean anything.

Where we tutor

Umm Suqeim and where the MYP actually is

For an MYP page the useful local detail is where the programme is taught, because that is where the small pool of experienced MYP teachers lives and works. These notes map it rather than measuring drive times.

Umm Suqeim

Three sections of villas with a mix of British-curriculum and IB gates. MYP families here are a minority among IGCSE neighbours, which is why a well-meaning recommendation from the street is statistically likely to be for a different assessment system.

Al Sufouh

The closest concentration of IB continuum provision, towards Knowledge Park and Media City. If a genuinely local MYP-experienced teacher exists within reach of Umm Suqeim, this is where they are most likely to be working.

Al Safa

Inland across Al Wasl Road, with an IB continuum school among its British-curriculum gates. A good illustration of how two schools a few streets apart can run entirely different assessment frameworks and different report-card languages.

Jumeirah 2 and 3

The strip towards town feeding several of the same gates, with a similar MYP density to Umm Suqeim. The two areas share the same shortage of MYP-literate tutors and the same solution to it.

Al Barsha

A dense school cluster inland of Sheikh Zayed Road including IB Diploma and continuum provision. Umm Suqeim students at these gates have the longest commute, which pushes a realistic session start past 5pm.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Established IB provision further inland along Sheikh Zayed Road. Tutor recommendations from this cluster circulate into Umm Suqeim and travel well precisely because nobody is driving anywhere.

Palm Jumeirah

Offshore with no school of its own and children commuting inland to IB gates. The proximity question is meaningless here in practice, since the nearest MYP-experienced teacher is still a bridge crossing away at the worst hour.

Al Quoz

Mostly commercial with activity centres and some tuition premises. Relevant to MYP families as the location of a Creativity or service commitment that removes one weekday evening from the week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Suqeim

Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Jumeirah

The nearest gates, containing both IB continuum schools running the MYP and British-curriculum schools running IGCSE in the same year groups. That mixture is the source of most of the confusion MYP parents in this area encounter. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; no affiliation is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Request the clarification grid

Email the subject teacher for the task-specific clarification covering the most recent summative, naming the unit. It is the document the marking was done against, and it turns a vague worry about a grade into a specific statement about a criterion.

  2. 02

    Send the criterion marks

The four criterion marks from the latest report, per subject group, plus the marked task if the school releases it. Four numbers out of 8 say more than any description, and they show immediately whether one criterion is low across several subjects.

  3. 03

    Interview on vocabulary, not rapport

Use the questions on this page. A tutor who names the four criteria for the subject group, defines a global context without hesitating and asks for the clarification grid has taught the programme. One who paraphrases has not, however good the conversation feels.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on the marked task

A full-length one-to-one lesson at no cost, worked on your child's own marked summative rather than a fresh exercise. What you are listening for is whether the tutor explains the lost mark in descriptor terms or re-teaches the topic.

Review the criterion, not the grade

Every six to eight weeks, compare a new summative against the same criterion. A grade can stay still while a criterion rises, which is progress worth continuing. If the criterion has not moved after a full block, change the target, change the tutor, or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work from your school's documents

The task-specific clarification is what the marking was done against, so it is what the teaching is built on. A tutor teaching their own MYP scheme is teaching a plausible version of someone else's task, which is the failure the no-past-papers problem creates.

Criterion diagnosis before subject teaching

A 7, 7, 6, 2 profile and a 4, 4, 4, 4 profile can show the same grade and need opposite work. We start from the four numbers and from whether the same criterion is low elsewhere, because that distinction decides everything that follows.

Approaches to Learning treated as the real variable

When the same criterion letter is low across unrelated subjects, the gap is a skill rather than four subject weaknesses. Fixing it inside one subject group usually lifts the others, which is cheaper and more effective than three tutors.

The specialist pool stays open

The MYP is a minority programme inside a curriculum representing 7% of Dubai enrolment, and its experienced teachers cluster around IB schools rather than residential streets. Online delivery is what keeps a request fillable at all.

No claim that is not available to us

The IB authorises schools, not tutors. KHDA permits training institutes with premises. We explain both and claim neither, and we think a tutor claiming IB or KHDA approval tells you more about them than any testimonial could.

The Personal Project line stated first

Teaching, questioning and criterion feedback on the student's own journal and report. No drafting, no rewriting, no editing. The malpractice risk falls on the student, so the boundary is agreed in session one rather than left ambiguous.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Suqeim: your questions answered

How can I check that an MYP tutor really knows the programme if there are no past papers?+

Test the vocabulary and the proposed starting point. Ask them to name the four criteria for your child's subject group; someone who has taught it names them, and someone who has not produces a plausible paraphrase. Ask what a global context is - the answer is immediate or it is not. Then ask what they want from the school before lesson one. The right answer is the task-specific clarification and the marked summative. A tutor who wants nothing intends to teach their own scheme, which in a programme with no past papers means teaching a plausible version of somebody else's task.

What is a task-specific clarification and how do I get one?+

It is the document the marking was actually done against. For each summative task the teacher rewrites the generic criterion descriptors in the language of that unit: what investigating patterns means for this particular investigation, what counts as a justified conclusion here. Email the subject teacher, name the unit and the task, and say you want to support your child's work at home; schools generally share it. Without it, a tutor explaining a lost mark is guessing however well they know the subject. With it, the explanation becomes specific and the next draft can be aimed at something real.

What is a statement of inquiry and why does it change my child's mark?+

It is a single sentence combining the unit's key concept, its related concepts and its global context, and it is the sentence the whole unit answers. The top-band descriptors for a task are written against it. So a student can produce a technically excellent piece of work that never addresses the inquiry and score in the middle - the mark is correct and the knowledge was not the problem. Parents read that as unfair marking. Teachers read it as a student who answered a different question. Knowing the statement of inquiry before the task is written prevents the whole situation.

The same criterion letter is low in three different subjects. What does that mean?+

Almost certainly an Approaches to Learning skill rather than three subject weaknesses. The MYP teaches communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills across subjects and then assesses them inside subject criteria. Low D marks in Sciences, Individuals and Societies and Mathematics together point at critical thinking and reflection. Thin process journals in Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education point at self-management. The practical consequence is encouraging: one tutor working on that skill inside one subject group usually lifts the others, which costs far less than three subject tutors.

Can a tutor be IB approved for MYP work?+

No. The IB authorises schools to deliver its programmes; it does not approve, accredit or certify private tutors or tutoring companies for the MYP or for anything else. KHDA, ADEK, the Sharjah Private Education Authority and the Ministry of Education do not approve individual tutors either - KHDA issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises, which requires initial approval and annual renewal and is a licence for an organisation with a physical location. The permit that applies to an individual tutor in the UAE is MoHRE's private tuition work permit. IB Gram claims none of these approvals.

Is budget tutoring ever a sensible starting point for MYP?+

Less often than for IGCSE, and this is worth knowing before you spend. Published budget rates in Dubai start around AED 33-52 an hour from Tutopiya and AED 45-65 from EdFlik, and what they buy is supervision and question-bank drilling. The MYP has no question bank, and the marks are awarded against descriptors the tutor has not read. For a child who simply will not sit down to work, supervision still has value. For a criterion problem it has close to none, which makes it the clearest case of wasted spending in this part of the market.

Does examiner experience matter for an MYP tutor?+

Very little, and a provider leading with it has misunderstood the programme. MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked against published criteria, with task-specific clarifications written by the classroom teacher. There is no external paper for an examiner to have marked in the sense that applies to IGCSE or the Diploma Programme. What matters instead is whether the tutor has taught the subject group's criteria, can read a clarification grid, and knows how a raw total out of 32 converts to a 1-7 grade at your school. Premium rates of AED 500-650 buy scarcity and reputation rather than relevant skill here.

My child has moved into MYP from a British-curriculum school mid-year. What breaks first?+

Process documentation. A student arriving from a system that rewards correct answers writes the answer and stops, which scores on Criterion A and nothing else. The MYP's investigation and reflection criteria want the working visible: a conjecture tested across cases, a method someone else could follow, a reflection naming a specific decision and its consequence. The content is rarely the problem for a transferring student. The first useful intervention is reading three exemplars at different bands against the criterion descriptors, which often moves a band without any content teaching at all.

Which MYP subject groups are hardest to find a tutor for in Dubai?+

Design and Arts are the thinnest, followed by several Language Acquisition phases and by interdisciplinary units, where the assessment varies so widely between schools that experience at one school transfers poorly to another. Mathematics, Sciences and Language and Literature are the easiest to cover. Where a combination is genuinely hard to staff, the honest answers are a waiting position, a tutor in the same subject group who can work on the specific criterion, or no. We would rather say that than place somebody learning the framework alongside your child at specialist rates.

How much of a Personal Project can a tutor legitimately touch?+

The teaching and none of the writing. A tutor may teach goal setting, research method, project management and reflective writing, may ask the questions a supervisor will ask, and may explain what Criteria A, B and C reward - the project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting through the process journal and report rather than on the product. A tutor may not write or draft the report, write journal entries, build the product or edit a submission into shape. IB academic-honesty rules place the consequence on the student, who authenticates the work, so agree this boundary explicitly in the first session.

How do I find out whether MYP 5 at our Umm Suqeim school ends in eAssessment?+

Not every MYP school in Dubai does, so ask the MYP coordinator rather than assume. Where a school enters, MYP 5 results come from on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios alongside the Personal Project and lead to the MYP Certificate. Where it does not, MYP 5 ends with internal reporting and the student moves on without an external result. It changes what Year 11 should contain: an entered cohort needs timed on-screen practice, while a non-entered cohort is better served by strengthening the criterion habits the Diploma Programme will demand. Confirm any session detail on ibo.org.

What does the MYP criterion profile tell us about readiness for the Diploma Programme?+

More than the overall grades do. DP Internal Assessments ask for a question framed, a method justified, data handled honestly and limitations named - which is structurally what the MYP's investigation and reflection criteria reward. A student with consistently strong B and D marks across subject groups tends to handle DP coursework well even if their content grades are middling. A student carrying 3s and 4s on reflective criteria will find the DP's coursework load heavier than its content. That is a conversation worth having in MYP 4, not in the week option forms are due.

How long before a criterion mark actually moves?+

Usually one summative cycle for technique criteria and two for the reflective ones. Criterion C, which rewards how clearly reasoning is communicated, often moves after a single round of exemplar work because the student simply did not know what the top band looked like. Criteria B and D take longer, because investigating properly and thinking critically are habits rather than formats. Expect to judge progress over six to eight weeks against a new summative in the same subject group, and expect the overall grade to lag the criterion by a reporting cycle. If nothing has moved after a full block, change something.

What time can an MYP session start for a student travelling back to Umm Suqeim?+

Allow 5pm, and later if the gate is in Al Barsha or Emirates Hills. Secondary release across the Dubai schools corridor runs roughly from 2:45pm to 3:30pm, and a student returning to Umm Suqeim from Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or further inland arrives between about 3:55pm and 4:35pm. Changing, food and a break take the rest, so the usable window opens near 5pm and closes around 6:45pm. Delivering over live video keeps that window whole, since nothing in the arrangement depends on how Sheikh Zayed Road happens to be moving.

Should we buy tutoring for more than one MYP subject group at once?+

Rarely. The MYP already fills a week with eight subject groups plus the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies requirements that apply in all Dubai private schools, so there is little slack to spend. More importantly, if several criterion marks are low the cause is usually a shared Approaches to Learning skill, and working on it inside one subject group transfers to the others. Two subject groups is occasionally right where the content gaps are genuinely separate. Three weekly sessions, in a programme this full, usually means three sessions attended with nothing done between them.

Get the documents, then interview

The MYP removes the usual ways of checking a tutor, so the work shifts earlier: request the clarification grid, the unit overview, the marked summative and the grade boundary table, then interview on vocabulary rather than rapport. A tutor who names the four criteria, defines a global context without pausing and asks for the clarification grid has taught the programme. Send the criterion marks and the marked task, take a free trial lesson, and listen for descriptor language. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
