IB MYP Tutor in Motor City

Because the MYP assesses continuously rather than at the end, the question for a family wanting an IB MYP tutor in Motor City is when to act rather than what to buy. Criteria are assessed in a rolling cycle, the Personal Project runs across a whole year, and a report arrives after the window to influence it has closed. This page maps that calendar and names the five moments worth intervening at. Teaching is one-to-one over live video; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits.

  • The rolling criterion cycle explained, so a report can be read in time
  • A Personal Project timeline across the whole final year

Continuous assessment means the timing is the whole problem

The Middle Years Programme has no terminal examination for most students, which sounds like relief and is actually a different kind of pressure. Instead of one window at the end, assessment happens continuously: each subject assesses against four criteria across the year, each task is marked against descriptors, and the grade at the end is a conversion of what accumulated. There is no catch-up term and no final push that can rescue a year, because by the time a report shows a problem the tasks that produced it have been marked and filed. That is not a criticism of the programme, which is designed to assess learning as it happens, but it does mean a family reacting to reports is permanently one cycle behind the thing they are reacting to.

That changes the tutoring question from what to buy to when to act. A family that reads a December report and intervenes in January is acting on information about September and October. The criterion that was weak has probably already been assessed twice more by then. Acting earlier requires knowing the cycle rather than waiting for the report, and the cycle is knowable: schools publish assessment calendars, and subject teachers will say which criterion the next task carries if asked.

The second timing problem is the Personal Project, which runs across the final MYP year and is assessed on a documented process rather than on a product. A project begun in earnest in the term it is due cannot have a contemporaneous process journal, because the process already happened unrecorded. That is a scheduling failure that reads as a criterion failure, and it is the single most common Personal Project problem in this corridor.

The third is the transition out. A Year 11 MYP student moving into DP1 has a predictable gap — strong reasoning and communication, slower procedural execution — and the long holiday before DP1 is the cheapest window in the whole continuum to close it. Almost nobody uses it, and the same work in October costs more and achieves less because the student is simultaneously keeping up with new content.

Motor City's position is worth noting. GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs a British curriculum, so MYP students here attend the continuum schools across the Dubailand corridor — Fairgreen International School and Greenfield International School principally — and commute. That puts realistic session starts at about 17:00, and it means the moments described on this page have to be planned around a drive rather than slotted in after school. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, sessions run 45 or 60 minutes to 21:00, and there are no home visits anywhere in the UAE.

At a glance

  • MYP assessment is continuous, so there is no final catch-up window
  • A report describes a period that has already closed
  • Schools publish assessment calendars; teachers will name the next criterion
  • The Personal Project is assessed on a documented process, not a product
  • The summer before DP1 is the cheapest window in the continuum
  • Sessions run to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time and are recorded
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP sits between the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma, and the calendar changes completely at each boundary. These three stages cover the continuum enquiries from the Motor City area.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led across six transdisciplinary themes, with no external examinations and continuous teacher assessment ending in the Year 6 Exhibition. Reporting is descriptive rather than numerical, so the arrival of criteria and achievement levels in Year 7 is the first time a continuum parent sees a number and has to learn to read one.

Primary-age families around Motor City most often have children at Victory Heights Primary School or Bradenton Preparatory Academy in Dubai Sports City. Where the plan is an IB continuum, the Year 6 into Year 7 holiday is the right window for written-structure work, before criterion-referenced marking begins.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups across five years, each assessed against four criteria scored from 0 to 8, with the criterion total out of 32 converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. Assessment is internal and continuous unless the school uses MYP eAssessment in the final year, and the Personal Project runs across that final year.

MYP students near Motor City attend Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City or Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, since GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs a British curriculum. That commute puts realistic session starts at about 17:00 and makes the later slots the busiest.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six examined subjects at Higher and Standard Level plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, graded out of 45. The assessment model inverts: external examinations carry most of the weight, each subject has an internally assessed component worth 20-25%, and criterion-referenced feedback gives way to papers and mark schemes.

The step into DP1 is the most common reason a Motor City family calls about MYP, usually in Year 11 and usually too late to use the best window. MYP builds reasoning and communication and drills procedural execution less, so eight to twelve sessions in the summer before DP1 closes most of the gap.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP subject groups as they appear in an assessment calendar, with a note on when each one's weaker criteria tend to be assessed. Knowing the timing is what makes early intervention possible.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns and Applying usually arrive via a longer task set once or twice a year, which means a weak level in either is visible rarely and late.

Sciences

Integrated or discipline-based

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. The middle two arrive through practical write-ups clustered at particular points in the year rather than spread evenly.

Language and Literature

Years 7-11

Criteria are Analysing, Organising, Producing text, and Using language. Assessed frequently through written tasks, which makes this the subject where a weak criterion shows soonest and where early intervention is most straightforward.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Students progress by phase rather than year group, so a phase change mid-year resets expectations and is a moment worth watching.

Individuals and Societies

Years 7-11

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Investigating, Communicating, and Thinking critically. Investigating and Thinking critically usually arrive through extended research tasks placed at a particular point in the unit cycle, so the opportunity to prepare is finite and datable.

Design

Years 7-11

Criteria are Inquiring and analysing, Developing ideas, Creating the solution, and Evaluating. Assessed across a design cycle that spans weeks, so the documentation requirement starts long before the product does and is where marks are usually conceded.

Arts

Years 7-11

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Developing skills, Thinking creatively, and Responding. The process journal is assessed alongside the final piece, which means the recording has to be contemporaneous and cannot be assembled at the end of a unit.

Physical and Health Education

Years 7-11

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written and reflective components surprise students who expect a practical subject to be assessed only practically.

Interdisciplinary units

Years 7-11

Assessed against interdisciplinary criteria covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, and usually placed at a fixed point in the school year. Students default to presenting two separate pieces of subject work side by side, which evidences grounding and almost nothing for synthesising.

Personal Project

Final MYP year

Assessed against its own criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the process journal. Runs across the whole final year with school-set checkpoints, and the documentation requirement means it cannot be compressed into the term it is due.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, each tied to a point in the MYP calendar rather than to a subject.

Pre-task preparation

Short blocks placed before a known assessment task rather than after a report. Where the school's calendar says the next science task carries Inquiring and designing, two or three sessions beforehand on writing a testable hypothesis with justified variables is worth more than six sessions afterwards discussing why the level was low.

  • Timed to the school's published assessment calendar
  • Targets the specific criterion the next task carries
  • Two or three sessions, not an ongoing commitment
  • Works best when the teacher has confirmed the criterion

Personal Project supervision across the year

Four to six sessions spread across the final MYP year rather than concentrated at the end, placed against the school's checkpoints. The emphasis is the documented process, because that is what the criteria assess, and documentation cannot be produced retrospectively without it showing.

  • Goal narrowed in the first fortnight, not the final term
  • Process journal reviewed for criterion evidence as it is written
  • Sessions placed against the school's checkpoint dates
  • The student plans, makes and writes everything

The summer before DP1

Eight to twelve sessions in the long holiday aimed at the procedural execution the Diploma assumes and the MYP does not drill: algebraic manipulation, quantitative chemistry, unit handling, and writing to a clock. The cheapest and most effective block in the whole continuum, and the one almost nobody buys.

  • Indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation for mathematics
  • Moles, concentration and unit prefixes for the sciences
  • Timed writing against a clock rather than against a criterion
  • No school content competing for the same evenings

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Motor City

01

The rolling criterion cycle, and why a report arrives too late

In the MYP each subject assesses against four criteria across the year, but not evenly and not simultaneously. A unit will carry one or two criteria, the next unit another combination, and across a year every criterion gets assessed at least once and usually more. The grade reported at the end is a conversion of the accumulated levels, which means the reported number is a summary of events rather than a forecast.

The practical consequence is that a report is historical. A December report describing a weak Communicating level in mathematics is describing tasks set in September and October. By the time a family reads it and arranges help in January, the next Communicating task may already have been set or sat. Acting on reports alone means always working one cycle behind, which is why MYP tutoring so often feels like it is not landing.

The alternative is to work from the assessment calendar rather than from the report. Most schools publish one, and where they do not, a subject teacher will usually say which criteria the next unit carries if asked directly. With that information, two or three sessions can be placed before a task rather than six after it, which is both cheaper and effective. A student who knows that the next science task is assessed on Inquiring and designing can practise writing a testable hypothesis with justified variables in advance.

This is also the answer to a question families ask constantly, which is why MYP tutoring is hard to judge. It is hard to judge because the feedback loop is long and the data is retrospective. Shortening the loop — by working to the calendar, by asking which criterion is next, by reading the descriptor for the level above before the task rather than after it — is most of what good MYP support consists of.

02

The Personal Project as a year-long calendar

The Personal Project is assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the process journal, and it runs across the whole final MYP year with checkpoints set by the school. The single most important thing to understand about it is that the documented process carries more than the product does, which means the project cannot be compressed. A student who does all the work in the final term has a product and no contemporaneous record of how it came about, and the criteria are written to detect exactly that.

The year has a shape. The first stage is choosing and narrowing a goal, and it should be finished within the first few weeks. The failure here is ambition: students choose the most impressive thing they can imagine, and the ambition then consumes the time that should have gone into documentation. The useful intervention is to narrow the goal until it is genuinely achievable in the time available and genuinely documentable step by step.

The middle stages are doing the work and recording it as it happens. The process journal is not a diary and not a scrapbook to be made presentable at the end: it is evidence of decisions made and why, sources consulted and what they changed, problems met and how they were addressed, and skills attempted and how they developed. Reviewing it monthly against the criteria — rather than reading it once at the end — is what keeps it usable.

The final stage is the report, and by then most of the marks are already determined by what the journal contains. A tutor's role across the whole year is narrow and specific: question the goal until it is achievable, explain what each criterion credits using the published descriptors, review the journal for missing criterion evidence, teach a research or referencing skill, and give feedback on a report draft the student wrote. A tutor may not choose the goal, make the product, write any part of the report, or help construct the journal retrospectively.

Five moments in an MYP year worth acting on

Because MYP support is about timing, it helps to name the moments that actually repay intervention. There are five, and outside them an open-ended weekly slot for an MYP student is usually a subscription rather than a plan. A provider who proposes one for a Year 8 student with a single weak criterion should be asked what the endpoint is.

The first is the arrival of criteria in Year 7, for a student coming from the PYP or from a different system. Learning to read a report that gives four numbers out of eight, and learning that a low Communicating level is not a content problem, saves two years of misdirected effort. One or two sessions with the parent as much as the student.

The second is a confirmed weak criterion with a known next task, which is where pre-task preparation belongs. The third is a phase change in Language Acquisition or a set change in mathematics, both of which reset expectations mid-year and often produce a dip that looks like regression and is actually recalibration. The fourth is the start of the Personal Project year, in the first few weeks, where narrowing the goal is worth more than any later help.

The fifth is the summer before DP1, which is the largest single opportunity in the continuum and the least used. A student who spends eight to twelve sessions in July and August on procedural execution starts DP1 able to keep pace; the same student starting in October is behind on new content as well as adapting to a new assessment model, and the work takes longer and costs more. Outside these five, the honest answer is often that no tutoring is needed yet.

04

The summer before DP1, in detail

This is the section worth reading twice if a Motor City family has a Year 11 MYP student. The step into the Diploma is a change in assessment model rather than in difficulty, and it is entirely predictable. MYP mathematics rewards investigating patterns and communicating reasoning; Diploma Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without a calculator and rewards accurate manipulation at speed. MYP sciences reward inquiry and design; Diploma science papers reward naming a principle and applying it inside a time limit. MYP humanities reward sustained analysis; Diploma Paper 1 is guided analysis of an unseen text under examination conditions.

In every case the student has the thinking and not the execution, which is good news because execution is the more teachable of the two. What it needs is volume and a clock, neither of which the MYP has required of them. Eight to twelve sessions across July and August on indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation for mathematics, on moles, concentration and unit prefixes for the sciences, and on writing a timed analytical paragraph for the humanities, closes most of the gap.

The reason the summer specifically is that nothing competes for it. During term, a student doing this work is also keeping up with new Diploma content, managing six subjects plus the core, and adjusting to a new school in many cases. In July they are doing one thing. Ten sessions in the holiday routinely achieve more than twenty in October, and they cost less because fewer are needed.

The secondary benefit is confidence, which is not a marketing point in this context but a measurable one. A student who arrives in DP1 able to execute at the expected pace engages with new content differently from one who is immediately behind. The first set of marked DP1 papers then confirms competence rather than establishing a problem, and the whole two years start from a different place.

Reporting cycles, parents' evenings and what to ask

  • Ask which criterion is lowest and what the descriptor above it says
  • Ask which criteria the next unit assesses
  • Ask what evidence would earn the next level
  • In the Personal Project year, ask for the checkpoint dates in writing
  • MYP levels are school-awarded, so the descriptors matter more than the number

A Dubai MYP school typically reports two or three times a year with a parents' evening attached to at least one. Those are the formal information points and they are usually used badly, because the conversation defaults to how the term has gone rather than to anything actionable. Three questions change that, and they take two minutes each.

The first is which criterion is lowest and what the descriptor for the level above says. That converts a number into a target with wording attached, and the wording is what a student can actually work towards. The second is which criteria the next unit assesses, which is the information that makes pre-task preparation possible instead of retrospective repair. The third is what evidence the teacher would need to see to award the next level, which is a more precise question than asking how the student can improve.

For the Personal Project year, add a fourth: what the next checkpoint requires and by when. Schools set those dates and they are the ones that actually bind, and a family who has them written down in the first term of the final year can place supervision sessions before each rather than after the fact.

One further note on comparability, because it affects how a report should be read. MYP assessment is internal and continuous, awarded by the school against published descriptors, with internal moderation and IB guidance but no external examiner calibrating one school's level 6 against another's. That is a deliberate design feature rather than a flaw, but it means the descriptors matter more than the number, and a sixth-form or Diploma conversation about MYP grades usually needs the descriptors alongside them.

06

The Dubai academic year and where MYP work fits

A UAE academic year has its own rhythm — a long summer break, National Day, a winter break, a spring break and the Ramadan period — and MYP work fits it differently from examination-year work. There is no terminal series to count back from, which removes one pressure and removes one organising principle with it. The result is that MYP support drifts unless it is pinned to something.

The long summer break is the most valuable window and it is valuable twice: once for the Year 6 into Year 7 transition, where written structure can be built before criterion marking begins, and once for the Year 11 into DP1 transition described above. Both are periods when nothing competes, and both are almost entirely unused by the families who would benefit most.

During term, work should be pinned to the assessment calendar rather than spread evenly. Two or three sessions before a known task in a weak criterion is the model. The winter and spring breaks are short and often involve travel, so they suit a single catch-up on one named thing rather than an ambitious plan. The Ramadan period shortens the school day and moves the productive window to after Iftar, which suits review and reflective work — and for the Personal Project specifically, it is a good period for writing up journal entries and reflecting, which is exactly the criterion work that gets neglected.

Sessions move to post-Iftar timing, typically 20:30 to 22:00 on Gulf Standard Time, on request and at no additional cost. Because every session is recorded, a rescheduled or missed week loses nothing in content, which matters more at MYP age where a student is more likely to rewatch an explanation than to ask for it twice.

What MYP support costs, timed rather than continuous

MYP support should cost less than Diploma support because the right shapes are short and timed, not continuous. The published Dubai bands, read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the entry level; Unitors IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; Bestimate's 2026 rate table at AED 150-300 for qualified online subject tutors, AED 180-350 for in-home one-to-one and AED 200-450 or above for IB and IGCSE specialists, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500 once travel is included; TutorChase at AED 270; BartyED at AED 650.

The five moments described above cost what the table below shows, and what it makes visible is that the whole of an MYP year's sensible support frequently comes to fewer sessions than a single term of a weekly slot. A pre-task block is two or three sessions. A criteria explanation session is one. Personal Project supervision is four to six spread across a year. The summer before DP1 is the largest single purchase at eight to twelve, and it is the one with the clearest return.

Against that, an open-ended weekly slot for a Year 8 student with one weak criterion is thirty or more sessions a year at AED 150-300, which is AED 4,500-9,000 for a problem that two or three well-timed sessions would have addressed. We say that even though the subscription bills better, because the alternative is a family paying for attention the student does not need and then having no budget left for the summer before DP1, which they do.

IB Gram publishes no fixed hourly rate on this page because subject, level and urgency move it, and a quote follows the free diagnostic lesson. For context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within an AED 2.5 billion total.

Starting, with the scheduling and the footnotes

  • Send the report, the assessment calendar and any Personal Project dates
  • Free diagnostic lesson, then a note on which moment you are at
  • Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is needed yet
  • Sessions start about 17:00 from Motor City, with slots to 21:00
  • No regulator approval claimed, no UAE office, no fine amounts published

Send the report with the four achievement levels per subject, the school's assessment calendar if you have it, and — in the final MYP year — the Personal Project checkpoint dates. A specialist runs a free diagnostic lesson against the relevant criterion descriptors and sends a written note within a working day naming which of the five moments you are at and what, if anything, is worth buying. Nothing is charged before you read it, and sometimes the honest note says to wait.

Availability is good across MYP mathematics, the sciences, language and literature, and individuals and societies, with a match normally inside one to three working days. Language acquisition in a minority language, some arts and design specialisms, and Personal Project supervision for an unusual goal are thinner and may need a subject match rather than a general one. Where no UAE-resident specialist is free, the tutor comes from our India-based IB faculty teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and we say so before the booking.

Scheduling from Motor City: MYP students commute to the continuum schools across the Dubailand corridor, so sessions start at about 17:00, with slots to 21:00 on Gulf Standard Time for families whose early evening is taken. Sessions run 45 or 60 minutes and are recorded, which matters at this age. During Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing, typically 20:30 to 22:00, which suits review and journal work well.

And the claims we do not make. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, and has no UAE office or centre. Private tutoring is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

Motor City

GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs a British curriculum, so MYP students commute out and sessions from this postcode start at about 17:00.

The Sustainable City

Fairgreen International School runs the full IB continuum including MYP, making it the closest MYP provision to Motor City and a common destination for continuum-minded families.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School offers the continuum here. The drive back in afternoon traffic pushes realistic session starts towards 17:30 for families on this side.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches runs the Diploma, so families in this cluster more often ask about the MYP to Diploma step than about MYP assessment itself.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School and Bradenton Preparatory Academy skew primary, so enquiries from here are mostly about the PYP to MYP transition and the arrival of criteria.

Dubai Hills Estate

Predominantly British-curriculum schools, which makes this the community where the MYP against IGCSE comparison is requested most often before a school move.

DAMAC Hills

No continuum provision inside the community, so every MYP student commutes and the 18:00 slot is the most requested from this postcode.

Town Square and Mudon

Long school runs and a young population. MYP enquiries concentrate on mathematics criteria and on the Personal Project in the final year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the assessment calendar, not just the report

A report summarises a closed period. The assessment calendar says which criteria the next units carry, which is the only information that lets help arrive before the marking. Most Dubai schools publish one; where they do not, the subject teacher will usually say if asked directly.

  2. 02

Read the descriptor for the level above

Each achievement level has published wording, and the target is the wording of the level above the one the student is on. That converts a number out of eight into something a student can work towards, and it is a ten-minute job that most families never do.

    Place help before the task

Two or three sessions before a known assessment task in a weak criterion is worth more than six sessions after a report. Where the school has confirmed that the next science task carries Inquiring and designing, the preparation is specific and the timing is the whole point.

  4. 04

Start the Personal Project in the first fortnight

Narrow the goal until it is achievable and documentable, and set the process journal up as contemporaneous evidence rather than as a diary. Supervision sessions then sit before each school checkpoint. A project begun in the final term cannot have a contemporaneous journal, and the criteria detect that.

  5. 05

    Book the summer before DP1

Eight to twelve sessions in July and August on procedural execution: manipulation for mathematics, quantitative work for the sciences, timed writing for the humanities. Nothing competes for the time, and ten sessions in the holiday routinely achieve more than twenty in October.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Timed to the calendar, not to the report

Continuous assessment means a report describes a period that has already closed. We work from the school's assessment calendar so two or three sessions can land before a task rather than six after it, which is both cheaper and effective.

Five moments named, and the rest left alone

Criteria arriving in Year 7, a weak criterion with a known next task, a phase or set change, the start of the Personal Project year, and the summer before DP1. Outside those, the honest answer is often that nothing is needed yet, and we say so.

The Personal Project treated as a year

The documented process carries more than the product, so the goal is narrowed in the first fortnight and the journal reviewed monthly against the criteria. A project compressed into the final term cannot evidence a process that was never recorded.

The summer before DP1 prioritised

The largest single opportunity in the continuum and the least used. MYP builds reasoning and the Diploma tests execution under time, so eight to twelve sessions in July and August routinely achieve more than twenty in October and cost less.

Short purchases, not subscriptions

A whole MYP year's sensible support frequently comes to fewer sessions than one term of a weekly slot. An open-ended arrangement for a Year 8 student with one weak criterion is a subscription, and we will say so rather than sell it.

Descriptors over numbers

MYP levels are school-awarded against published descriptors with no external examiner calibrating between schools. That makes the wording more informative than the number, and it is the wording we teach and target.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Motor City: your questions answered

Why does acting on an MYP report always feel too late?+

Because it is. MYP assessment is continuous, so a report is a summary of a period that has already closed. A December report describing a weak Communicating level is describing tasks set in September and October, and by the time help is arranged in January the next task in that criterion may already have been set. The alternative is to work from the school's assessment calendar, or simply to ask the subject teacher which criteria the next unit carries, so two or three sessions can land before the marking rather than after it.

What should I ask at an MYP parents' evening?+

Three questions, two minutes each. Which criterion is lowest, and what does the descriptor for the level above say — that turns a number out of eight into a target with wording attached. Which criteria does the next unit assess — that is the information that makes preparation possible instead of repair. And what evidence would the teacher need to see to award the next level — a more precise question than asking how the student can improve. In the Personal Project year, add a request for the checkpoint dates in writing.

When should the Personal Project actually start?+

In the first few weeks of the final MYP year, and the goal should be narrowed almost immediately. The criteria assess planning, applying skills, reflecting and the process journal, which means the documented process carries more than the product does. A student who does the work in the final term has a product and no contemporaneous record of how it came about, and the criteria are written to detect exactly that. Narrowing the goal until it is achievable and documentable is the single highest-value intervention available.

Can the process journal be written up at the end of the project?+

It can be, and it reads as what it is. The journal is assessed as evidence of decisions made and why, sources consulted and what they changed, problems met and how they were addressed, and skills attempted and how they developed. A retrospective account cannot contain the dead ends, the changes of direction or the dated reasoning that make it evidence, and the criteria credit precisely those. Reviewing the journal monthly against the descriptors while the work is happening is what keeps it usable, and it takes very little time.

Why did my child's MYP level drop after a phase change?+

Because the expectations reset rather than because the student regressed. In Language Acquisition students progress through phases rather than year groups, and a move to a higher phase means the same performance is measured against more demanding descriptors. The same effect appears after a set change in mathematics. It looks like a dip and it is a recalibration, and two or three sessions of work against the new phase's descriptors usually settles it. Worth asking the teacher to confirm a phase change has happened before concluding anything else.

Is there any point tutoring an MYP student with no exams coming?+

At five specific moments, yes, and outside them often not. The five are: criteria arriving in Year 7 for a student new to the system; a confirmed weak criterion with a known next task; a phase or set change mid-year; the first few weeks of the Personal Project year; and the summer before DP1. Each of those has a defined purchase of one to twelve sessions. An open-ended weekly slot for a Year 8 student with a single weak criterion is a subscription rather than a plan, and we will say so.

How much does a year of MYP support actually need to cost?+

Frequently less than one term of a weekly slot. A criteria explanation session is one session, AED 150-450 at published bands. A pre-task block is three. Personal Project supervision is four to six spread across a year. The largest purchase is the summer before DP1 at eight to twelve sessions. Against that, a weekly slot across a year is thirty or more sessions, which at AED 150-300 is AED 4,500-9,000 for something two or three well-timed sessions would often have addressed.

What exactly should we do in the summer before DP1?+

Procedural execution, because that is what the Diploma assumes and the MYP does not drill. For mathematics: indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation, since Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. For the sciences: moles, concentration, unit prefixes and significant figures. For the humanities and language: writing a timed analytical paragraph against a clock rather than against a criterion. Eight to twelve sessions, with nothing competing for the time, and it routinely achieves more than twenty sessions in October.

Why is the summer window better than term time for the DP1 step?+

Because in July a student is doing one thing. During term they are keeping up with new Diploma content, managing six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, and in many cases adjusting to a new school. The same procedural work then has to compete with all of that and takes longer. There is also a confidence effect that is measurable rather than rhetorical: the first set of marked DP1 papers confirms competence instead of establishing a problem, and the two years start differently.

How does Ramadan affect MYP work specifically?+

Favourably, if the work is chosen to suit it. School hours shorten and the productive window moves to after Iftar, which does not suit new content or long tasks but does suit review and reflection. For a Personal Project student that is close to ideal: writing up journal entries, reflecting on what a stage produced, and preparing for a checkpoint are exactly the activities that fit a short post-Iftar session. Sessions move to 20:30 to 22:00 on Gulf Standard Time on request, at no additional cost, and every session is recorded.

If two MYP subjects are weak, should we use one tutor for both?+

Usually yes, and for MYP the question arises less often than families expect, because the right purchases are short and single-subject rather than continuous across several. Where a student does need work in two subject groups at once — mathematics and sciences, say — one tutor covering both is better, because the criteria overlap conceptually and the student re-explains less context. Ask directly which subject groups a tutor has taught in the MYP specifically, because criterion-referenced marking is a different skill from teaching the same content in an examined system.

Where do MYP students near Motor City go to school?+

Out of the community. GEMS Metropole School inside Motor City runs a British curriculum, so MYP students commute to the continuum schools across the Dubailand corridor — principally Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City and Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, with Nord Anglia International School Dubai, North London Collegiate School Dubai and Emirates International School Meadows also within range. That commute puts realistic session starts at about 17:00. We name schools as market context and hold no relationship with any of them.

Are MYP grades from different Dubai schools comparable?+

Not in the way an examination grade is. MYP assessment is internal and continuous, awarded by the school against published descriptors, with internal moderation and IB guidance but no external examiner calibrating one school's level 6 against another's. That is a deliberate design feature rather than a flaw, but it has a practical consequence: the descriptors are more informative than the number, and a conversation with a receiving school about MYP grades usually needs the descriptors alongside them.

Does an MYP tutor come to the house in Motor City?+

Not from us. Home visits exist in the Dubai market at AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 rate table and up to about AED 500 for independent home tutors with travel included, and for a Year 7 or 8 student who cannot yet self-manage a screen there is a genuine case for one. IB Gram delivers UAE tuition one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and runs home visits only in India. Sessions are 45 or 60 minutes, start from about 17:00 after the commute, and are recorded.

Work from the calendar, and book the summer

Two things would improve most MYP outcomes in this part of Dubai and neither is a weekly slot. Get the school's assessment calendar, find out which criteria the next units carry, and place two or three sessions before a task instead of six after a report — because continuous assessment means a report always arrives after the window to influence it has closed. And if your child is in Year 11, book the summer before DP1: eight to twelve sessions on procedural execution while nothing competes for the time. Send the report and the calendar, and take the free diagnostic lesson.
