IB Maths Tutor in Motor City

An IB maths tutor in Motor City should be able to tell you what "hence" obliges a student to do, why an answer given to four significant figures loses a mark, and which of the five syllabus topics your child's last paper actually failed on. This page covers all three: the topic structure, the command terms, the calculator rules and the accuracy conventions. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits.

  • The five syllabus topic areas with what each paper does with them

IB & IGCSE in Motor City

Marks are lost in the wording, the notation and the accuracy

There is a particular kind of maths student who understands the material and keeps scoring below what their teacher expects. They can do the differentiation. They know what a binomial distribution is. They can solve the equation. And they lose four or five marks a paper on things that are not mathematics at all: a final answer rounded to the wrong number of figures, a question that said 'hence' answered as though it said 'find', working done entirely on a calculator with nothing written down, a variable used without being defined.

That student does not need more content. They need the conventions, and the conventions are published and finite. The accuracy rule for a final answer is three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise or an exact value is required. A question asking for an exact value will not accept a decimal. 'Hence' obliges the student to use the previous result; 'hence or otherwise' permits a fresh start. Method marks require visible steps. A variable introduced in an answer has to be defined. None of that is mathematics, all of it is assessed, and all of it is learnable in a handful of sessions once somebody has pointed at it.

This page is built around those conventions and around the syllabus structure that sits underneath them. Both IB mathematics courses — Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation — are organised into five topic areas: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. Knowing which of the five a paper failed on is a far better starting point than knowing the overall score, and a marked script gives that in about five minutes. The same script, read a second time for conventions alone, gives the other half of the diagnosis, and the two together are what a plan should be built on rather than a sense that maths is going badly.

Motor City's relationship to IB mathematics is worth stating because it shapes the practical side. GEMS Metropole School sits inside the community and runs a British curriculum through IGCSE, so there is no Diploma cohort here. Students taking IB mathematics travel out across the Dubailand corridor — to JESS Arabian Ranches, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Fairgreen International School, Greenfield International School — and are home in time for a session from about 18:00.

Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard the student writes on, which matters in mathematics more than in any other subject because the working has to be visible to be marked. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is an India-only service. Sessions run 45 or 60 minutes, to 21:00, and every one is recorded.

Mathematics in the IB runs as a continuum, and the conventions described on this page belong to the Diploma courses specifically. The two stages before it decide how much work those conventions take to install.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

The algebraic and analytic route across all five topic areas, with proof and complex numbers added at Higher Level. Paper 1 is sat without a calculator at both levels, which makes exact values, surd manipulation and sketching from factorised form part of the assessed content rather than incidental skills. The Exploration is 20% at both levels, and Higher Level adds a third paper.

Several engineering, mathematics, physics and quantitative economics degree routes specify Analysis and Approaches, some at Higher Level, so the course choice should be checked against each target university's own admissions page before the subject form is signed. Motor City students take it at the Dubailand-corridor schools rather than inside the community.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

The modelling and statistics route, calculator-permitted on every paper, across the same five topic areas with a heavier weighting towards statistics and probability. Higher Level extends into graph theory and matrices. The conventions on accuracy and command terms apply identically; what changes is that calculator use is expected throughout, which makes the requirement to show reasoning easier to forget.

Applications and Interpretation suits business, psychology, design and many life-science routes and is a well-designed course rather than a fallback. The caution for UAE families is prerequisite checking: a student who takes it and then applies to a programme specifying Analysis and Approaches has a problem that cannot be solved in DP2.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria — knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts — scored out of 8 each and converted to a 1-7 grade. The programme builds reasoning and presentation well and drills procedural fluency less, which is why the conventions on this page take longer to install for a student arriving from MYP than from IGCSE.

MYP students near Motor City attend Fairgreen International School or Greenfield International School. The step into Diploma mathematics is a step in execution rather than understanding, and the long holiday before DP1 is the cheapest place to close it: eight to twelve sessions on indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The five syllabus topic areas plus the components, with what each paper tends to do with them and where the convention errors appear. This is the list a marked script should be read against.

Topic 1: Number and algebra

HL and SL, both courses

Sequences and series, exponents and logarithms, the binomial theorem, and at Higher Level proof and complex numbers. Convention errors cluster here: exact values involving surds requested and given as decimals, and logarithm laws applied without stating the base.

Topic 2: Functions

HL and SL, both courses

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, transformations and the quadratic family. Marks go on describing a transformation without a vector or a factor, and on domain restrictions omitted when an inverse is stated.

Topic 3: Geometry and trigonometry

HL and SL, both courses

Trigonometric ratios, identities and equations, radian measure, vectors at Higher Level in Analysis and Approaches. Solutions lost by dividing through by a trigonometric factor, and answers given in degrees where the domain was set in radians, are the standing pattern.

Topic 4: Statistics and probability

HL and SL, both courses

Data presentation, correlation and regression, probability distributions, and at Higher Level more inference. Heavier in Applications and Interpretation. Conclusions that assert causation from correlation, and hypotheses stated loosely, are where the marks go rather than in the computation.

Topic 5: Calculus

HL and SL, both courses

Differentiation and integration with applications, extending at Higher Level into implicit differentiation, related rates and differential equations. The recurring error is chain-rule execution inside a product or quotient, and substitution integrals where the substitution is not declared.

Paper 1

AA: no calculator; AI: calculator permitted

Shorter structured questions across the five topics. On the Analysis and Approaches route the absence of a calculator is the defining feature and the reason exact-value work matters. On Applications and Interpretation the calculator is available and the risk becomes invisible working.

Paper 2

HL and SL, both courses

Longer multi-part questions where part (a) sets up part (c), so an early error propagates. The calculator is permitted and is a tool rather than a method; writing intermediate values down is what preserves the method marks when the final figure is wrong.

Paper 3, Higher Level only

AA HL and AI HL

Two extended investigation questions in one hour, worth 20% of the grade, leading a student through unfamiliar mathematics in scaffolded parts. Reading the whole question before starting is the assessed skill as much as the mathematics is.

The Exploration

HL and SL, both courses

An internally assessed mathematical report worth 20%, marked out of 20 across five criteria. Mathematical communication is where notation conventions pay off directly: defined variables, labelled axes, and mathematical notation rather than calculator syntax.

Graphic display calculator skills

HL and SL, both courses

Solving, graphing, statistical functions and numerical calculus on the device. Treated as a skill in its own right, because a student who cannot find the right function quickly loses time on Paper 2 even when the mathematics is secure.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with a shared whiteboard. In mathematics the whiteboard matters, because working that cannot be seen cannot be corrected.

Conventions block

Four to six sessions aimed entirely at the things that are not mathematics: accuracy conventions, command term obligations, notation, defining variables, and writing method so it can be credited. Worked on questions where the content is already secure, so the only new thing being learned is the convention.

  • Accuracy and exact-value rules drilled explicitly
  • Command terms annotated before every answer
  • Notation corrected as a skill, not as a style note
  • Four to six sessions, with a measurable before and after

Past-paper mining

A weekly session built entirely around past questions and published mark schemes, selected by the topic area the marked script identified. The student attempts, the tutor marks to the scheme on screen, and the gap between what was written and what was credited becomes the lesson. No textbook exercises at all.

  • Questions selected by topic area from the diagnosis
  • Marked to the published scheme line by line
  • Error log maintained across the whole block
  • Papers referenced at source, never redistributed

Exploration supervision

Four to six sessions placed before the school's internal deadline, structured around the five criteria. The topic is tested for level and data availability before any writing starts, because the use-of-mathematics criterion carries six of the twenty marks and a topic below the level of the course caps it.

  • Topic tested against the course level first
  • Mathematical communication treated as assessed content
  • Criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own drafts
  • The student writes every submitted word

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Motor City

01

The five topic areas, and what each paper does with them

Both IB mathematics courses are organised into the same five topic areas: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. The content within each differs between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, and between Standard and Higher Level, but the structure is shared. That makes the five areas the right unit for diagnosis, because a marked script can be scored against them in a few minutes and the result tells you what to teach.

What each paper does with a topic area differs, and this is the part that makes topic-based revision insufficient on its own. A shorter structured question asks a topic cleanly: one or two skills, three or four marks, minimal context. A longer structured question embeds the same topic in a multi-part problem where part (a) produces something part (c) needs, which means an early slip propagates and the later parts are lost even when the student could do them.

The practical implication is that revision has to include whole questions, not just topics. A student who works through exercises on integration will improve at integration. A student who works through multi-part past questions involving integration will improve at integration, at reading what a question is building towards, and at recovering when part (a) goes wrong — which is three skills rather than one, and the second and third are what separate a 5 from a 7.

At Higher Level the third paper adds another layer, because it presents unfamiliar mathematics in a scaffolded sequence where each part establishes something the next part uses. It is one hour, two questions, and 20% of the grade. The skill it rewards is reading the whole question before starting and recording what each part has established, and it is frequently absent from school mock papers, so a substantial number of students meet the format first in the examination.

Command terms in mathematics, and what each one obliges

IB mathematics command terms are not synonyms. They carry defined obligations, and a student who treats them as interchangeable loses marks on questions they could answer. This is the cheapest single intervention available in the subject: one session to learn the list, a fortnight of annotating the command term before writing, and the mark profile changes across every paper.

The most consequential pair is 'hence' and 'hence or otherwise'. 'Hence' obliges the student to use the result just established; a correct answer reached by an independent method does not earn the marks, because the question was testing whether the student could see the connection. 'Hence or otherwise' explicitly permits a fresh start, so any valid method is credited. Students who do not know the distinction either waste time re-deriving when they were handed the result, or lose marks by ignoring a result they were told to use.

'Show that' requires a derivation ending at the stated result, with each step visible — quoting the answer back is worth nothing. 'Verify' permits substitution into a given result. 'Find' and 'determine' want the value with sufficient working to support it. 'Write down' signals that no working is expected and the answer should be immediate, which is also a hint that a long calculation means the student has misread the question. 'Sketch' wants shape, intercepts and asymptotes rather than plotted accuracy; 'draw' wants accuracy.

'Justify' and 'explain' are where stronger students gain separation, because both require a reason expressed in mathematical language rather than a restatement. And 'state' wants the answer alone. A student who writes a paragraph for a question that said 'state' has lost time they will need for the multi-part question at the end of the paper, which is a cost that does not show up as a lost mark but shows up in the total.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT EACH ONE REQUIRES

03

The calculator rules, and what counts as working

On the Analysis and Approaches route, Paper 1 is sat without a calculator and Paper 2 with one. On Applications and Interpretation, a calculator is permitted on every paper. Higher Level Paper 3 permits one on both courses. That distribution has two consequences that between them account for a large share of avoidable loss in this subject.

The first is the exact-value demand on Analysis and Approaches Paper 1. Without a calculator, a question can legitimately require a surd, a fraction, a logarithm left in exact form, or a trigonometric value from the standard set. A student who has learned mathematics with a graphing display calculator in their hand may understand the concept perfectly and be unable to produce the exact form, which reads as a content failure and is a fluency failure. It responds to short daily non-calculator practice over six to eight weeks and to nothing else.

The second is invisible working on the calculator-permitted papers. Method marks are awarded for visible steps. A student who computes a chain of operations on the device and writes only the final number has forfeited those marks if the answer is right and everything if it is wrong, because there is nothing on the page for an examiner to credit. The fix is procedural: write the expression being evaluated, then the value, on separate lines. It costs fifteen seconds a question and recovers marks across a whole paper.

There is also a positive calculator skill worth teaching deliberately, which most students acquire by accident. Knowing where the solver, the graph analysis functions, the statistical distributions and the numerical derivative and integral live on the specific model, and reaching them quickly, saves minutes on Paper 2. A student fumbling through menus under time pressure is losing marks to the interface rather than to the mathematics, and twenty minutes of deliberate practice fixes it.

CALCULATOR RULES BY PAPER AND WHAT WORKING MUST SHOW

AA Paper 1Not permittedExact values, surds, standard trig valuesFull algebraic working, step by step

04

Accuracy and notation: the marks that vanish silently

The accuracy convention is the single most common silent mark loss in IB mathematics. Unless a question specifies otherwise, a final answer is given to three significant figures, or exactly where an exact value is required or arises naturally. Students who write the full calculator output, or who round to two significant figures, or who give a decimal where an exact value was asked for, lose a mark on a question they answered correctly, and because the mathematics was right they often never find out why.

The related rule is about intermediate rounding. Full precision must be carried through intermediate steps and the rounding applied once, at the end. Rounding partway produces a final value outside the accepted tolerance, so the mark goes even though the method was sound. On a multi-part question the effect compounds, because part (c) inherits the imprecision from part (a).

Notation is the second category, and it is assessed directly in the Exploration through the mathematical communication criterion as well as incidentally in the papers. Variables used in an answer have to be defined. Axes on a sketch need labelling. Function notation should be used rather than calculator syntax — and a student who writes calculator output as though it were mathematical notation in their Exploration loses communication marks, which is four of the twenty available.

All of this is teachable in a short block and verifiable afterwards. Mark a student's past paper twice: once for the mathematics and once for the conventions alone. The difference between those two scores is the number of marks sitting on the table, and for a capable student who is underperforming it is routinely four or five marks a paper. That exercise is usually the most persuasive first session a tutor can run, because it turns a vague sense of underachievement into a specific number.

05

How to mine a past paper properly

Working through past papers is the most commonly recommended and most poorly executed revision activity in this subject. A student who attempts a paper, checks the answers, feels disappointed and moves on has spent two hours confirming what they already suspected. The value is in the marking, and specifically in the gap between what was written and what the published scheme credits.

The method is specific. Attempt the question under time. Then mark it against the scheme line by line, awarding yourself only what the scheme actually credits, which means reading the method marks rather than comparing final answers. Then classify every lost mark into one of four categories: content not known, method not shown, convention breached, or time. That classification is the whole point, because the four categories have completely different remedies and a student who does not separate them cannot act on the result.

Content not known is a teaching problem and the only one that needs new instruction. Method not shown is a habit and takes about two sessions to fix. Convention breached is the accuracy and command-term material above, and takes a block of four to six. Time is a selection and pacing problem that needs full papers under real conditions rather than topic work. Most underperforming students have far less content loss than they assume and far more of the other three.

On materials: IB past papers, mark schemes and subject guides are copyright. We work through them on screen in session, show exactly what the published scheme credits at each stage, and link the official sources so the family can obtain them legitimately. We do not distribute scanned papers or mark schemes, and a tutor offering a folder of them is creating a copyright problem rather than adding value.

What a past-paper-led plan costs in Dubai

A plan built on past papers and mark schemes has a different cost shape from one built on content teaching, and it is worth seeing the difference. Content teaching bills by the topic and expands to fill whatever time is bought. A past-paper plan has a natural length: a conventions block, a number of marked papers, and a timed-paper run before the session. It finishes.

The published Dubai bands, read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the entry level; Unitors IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150; Bestimate's 2026 rate table at AED 150-300 for qualified online subject tutors, AED 180-350 for in-home one-to-one, AED 200-450 or above for IB and IGCSE specialists, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500 including travel; TutorChase at AED 270; BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end.

There is one structural point in favour of spending at the specialist band for this particular plan. Marking a paper against a published scheme and explaining what the scheme credits requires somebody who has read those schemes. A tutor at the entry band may teach the mathematics competently and be unable to tell a student why a correct answer scored two out of four, which is precisely the information the plan exists to produce. The money is buying scheme familiarity rather than subject knowledge.

IB Gram publishes no fixed hourly rate on this page because level, component and urgency move it, and a quote follows the free diagnostic lesson. For context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within an AED 2.5 billion total. Published monthly packages in this market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions, which maps neatly onto a conventions block plus four marked papers.

Scheduling mathematics from Motor City

  • Fluency work wants 45 minutes, frequently; marked papers want a full hour
  • Diploma students from Motor City are available from about 18:00
  • Two differently shaped sessions a week is routine online
  • A visiting tutor's two-hour minimum makes that pairing impractical
  • No UAE office, centre or branch, and no home visits anywhere in the UAE

Mathematics needs two different session shapes and a Motor City Diploma family can get both. Non-calculator fluency work on the Analysis and Approaches route wants short frequent contact, because exact-value handling and algebraic speed are built by daily practice with regular marking. Marked past papers want a full hour, because a question attempted under time and then marked line by line against the scheme does not compress.

Diploma students from this postcode commute out of the community — GEMS Metropole School runs a British curriculum through IGCSE, so there is no local cohort — and are generally home between 16:30 and 17:30. That puts the earliest realistic session at about 18:00. Online, two sessions a week at 18:00 and 20:00 on different evenings is routine, and a 45-minute fluency slot can sit alongside a 60-minute marking session rather than competing with it.

A visiting tutor cannot deliver that pairing. Forty to sixty minutes of travel each way means a two-hour minimum booking and a latest workable start of roughly 18:30, so the week becomes one long appointment rather than two differently shaped ones. The published premium for the visit is AED 30-150 an hour over the equivalent online band, and in mathematics what it buys is presence rather than a shared whiteboard, which is arguably a downgrade: the whiteboard produces a record of the working that both tutor and student can revisit.

Home visits remain the right choice for some students, particularly younger ones who need an adult in the room. IB Gram does not offer them anywhere in the UAE — that is an India-only service — so the comparison here is informational rather than persuasive. What we will not do is imply a local presence we lack: no UAE office, no centre, no branch.

Starting, with the Exploration and the honesty line

  • Course, level, a marked paper and the Exploration deadline in the first message
  • The diagnostic paper is marked twice: mathematics, then conventions
  • Lost marks classified into content, method, convention and time
  • A tutor questions and gives feedback; the student writes every word
  • No regulator or awarding-body approval, no examiner status asserted

Send the course, the level, a marked paper and the school's Exploration deadline. A specialist runs a free diagnostic lesson in which the paper is marked twice — once for the mathematics and once for the conventions — and the difference becomes the starting number. A written note follows within a working day with the lost marks classified into content, method, convention and time, and a session estimate against each. Nothing is charged before you read it.

Availability for IB mathematics is the deepest in our subject list. Both courses at both levels have good UAE evening cover and a match normally takes one to three working days. The constraint when a family calls late in the year is the slot rather than the specialist, particularly for twice-weekly pairings at 18:00. Where no UAE-resident specialist is free, the match comes from our India-based IB faculty teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and we say so before the booking.

On the Exploration, the honesty line is strict. A tutor may interrogate the proposed topic until it carries mathematics at the right level, check that the data or model can support the planned analysis, explain what each of the five criteria credits using the published descriptors, teach mathematical notation as a skill, and read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion a passage fails. A tutor may not choose the topic, write any part of the report, restructure it by rewriting, or produce the mathematics. Every submitted word is the student's.

And the claims we do not make. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from the IB, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, is not an examination centre and has no UAE office. We do not describe tutors as current IB examiners, because that status cannot be evidenced here. Private tutoring is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws — no fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches is the nearest substantial Diploma cohort, and the community where Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are most often compared directly.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School and Bradenton Preparatory Academy sit inside the development and skew primary, so mathematics enquiries from here are mostly pre-IGCSE fluency work.

Dubai Hills Estate

Large British-curriculum intakes at GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail and Kings' School Dubai, with students splitting between A Level Mathematics and the IB routes at sixteen.

The Sustainable City

Fairgreen International School runs the full IB continuum, so its students arrive into Diploma mathematics from MYP and need the conventions installed rather than corrected.

Arabian Ranches 2 and 3

Younger phases with longer school runs. Mathematics enquiries concentrate on the groundwork that decides whether Analysis and Approaches is realistic at sixteen.

DAMAC Hills

Every Diploma student commutes, so the 19:00 slot dominates and recordings are used heavily for reviewing worked solutions the following day.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked paper, not a description

A marked script shows which of the five topic areas is weak and, more usefully, how much of the loss is convention rather than content. A description of how the term went shows neither. If nothing recent is marked, the diagnostic session includes a short timed section instead.

  2. 02

    Have it marked twice

Once for the mathematics and once for the conventions alone — accuracy, exact values, command terms, visible method, notation. The difference between the two scores is the number of marks available without learning any new content, and for a capable underperformer it is routinely four or five a paper.

  3. 03

    Classify every lost mark

Content not known, method not shown, convention breached, or time. The four have different remedies and different timescales, and a student who has not separated them cannot act on a paper score. This classification is the output of the free diagnostic lesson.

  4. 04

Run the right session shape for each part

Short frequent sessions for non-calculator fluency, a full hour for marked past papers, a compressed block for Higher Level Paper 3, and four to six sessions before the Exploration deadline. These are different jobs and do not substitute for one another.

  5. 05

Re-mark a paper at the end of the block

The same double marking, on a fresh paper, at the end of the block. If the convention gap has closed, the block worked. If it has not, either the between-session work is not happening or the diagnosis was wrong, and both are better established before the session than after it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The conventions treated as content

Three significant figures, exact values, visible method, defined variables, and what 'hence' obliges are all published, finite and assessed. We teach them as a block and verify the effect by marking a paper twice, which converts a vague underperformance into a number.

Command terms taught explicitly

'Hence' and 'hence or otherwise' are different instructions. 'Show that' needs a derivation; 'verify' permits substitution; 'state' wants the answer alone. One session plus a fortnight of annotating changes a student's mark profile across every paper in the course.

Past papers marked to the scheme, line by line

The value in a past paper is the marking, not the attempting. We award only what the published scheme credits and then classify the gap, because comparing final answers tells a student nothing about the method marks they lost.

Calculator rules handled in both directions

Paper 1 on Analysis and Approaches demands exact values without a device; the calculator-permitted papers demand visible working despite one. We drill both, and we teach the device itself deliberately, because fumbling menus under time pressure costs marks that are nothing to do with mathematics.

Plans that finish

A conventions block, a run of marked papers, a Paper 3 block, a timed-paper run, Exploration supervision. Each has a stated length and a way to check it worked, rather than an open weekly commitment that expands to fill whatever is bought.

A whiteboard, because working has to be visible

Mathematics is marked on what reaches the page, so the session needs a shared surface the student writes on and both parties can revisit. Every session is recorded, which means a worked solution from October can be rewatched in April at no extra cost.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Motor City: your questions answered

Why does my child lose marks when the maths is right?+

Almost always conventions rather than content. The default accuracy rule is three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise, and an exact value requested will not accept a decimal. Full precision has to be carried through intermediate steps and rounded once at the end. Method marks require visible working, so a chain of operations done on a calculator with only the final figure written down forfeits them. Variables used must be defined. Each of those is a mark on a question the student answered correctly, which is why they never find out.

What is the difference between "hence" and "hence or otherwise"?+

A significant one. 'Hence' obliges the student to use the result just established, and a correct answer reached by an independent method does not earn the marks, because the question was testing whether the connection was seen. 'Hence or otherwise' explicitly permits a fresh start, so any valid method is credited. Students who do not know the distinction either re-derive something they were handed, wasting time, or ignore a result they were instructed to use and lose the marks. It takes one session to learn the full command-term list.

Which of the five syllabus topics is my child actually weak in?+

A marked script answers that in about five minutes. Both IB mathematics courses are organised into number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus, and scoring a paper against those five areas tells you where to teach. What a topic breakdown will not tell you is how much of the loss is convention rather than content, which is why the diagnostic session marks the paper twice — once for the mathematics, once for accuracy, command terms and visible method alone.

Why is Paper 1 on Analysis and Approaches so much harder than class work?+

Because it is sat without a calculator, and that changes what the questions can demand. A paper with no device can legitimately require a surd, a fraction, a logarithm in exact form or a standard trigonometric value. A student who has learned with a graphing display calculator in their hand may understand the concept perfectly and be unable to produce the exact form under pressure. That is a fluency problem, not an understanding one, and it responds to short daily non-calculator practice over six to eight weeks rather than to more explanation.

How do we actually get value out of past papers?+

By marking rather than attempting. Sit the question under time, then mark it against the published scheme line by line, awarding only what the scheme credits, which means reading the method marks instead of comparing final answers. Then classify every lost mark as content not known, method not shown, convention breached, or time. Those four have different remedies and different timescales, and most underperforming students have far less content loss than they assume and far more of the other three.

Can we get copies of IB past papers and mark schemes from you?+

We teach from them on screen and link the official sources so you can obtain them through the proper route, but we do not hand over copies. IB past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are copyright, and a tutor distributing scanned folders of marking material is creating a copyright problem rather than adding value — and something more serious where unreleased material is involved. In session we work a real question through live and show exactly what the published scheme credits at each stage.

Is learning the calculator itself worth session time?+

A short amount of it, yes, and most students acquire the skill by accident instead. Knowing where the solver, the graph analysis functions, the statistical distributions and the numerical derivative and integral live on the specific model, and reaching them quickly, saves real minutes on a calculator-permitted paper. A student fumbling through menus under time pressure is losing marks to the interface rather than to the mathematics, and about twenty minutes of deliberate practice fixes it for the rest of the course.

How much notation detail does the Exploration actually assess?+

Four of the twenty marks, through the mathematical communication criterion, which is more than most students expect. It credits correct notation, defined variables, labelled graphs and consistent terminology. The commonest failure is writing calculator syntax as though it were mathematical notation, which reads immediately as a student working from a device rather than from mathematics. Since the Exploration is 20% of the grade at both levels and on both courses, four marks of notation is roughly one per cent of the final Diploma grade.

Does Higher Level Paper 3 need its own preparation?+

Yes, and it is frequently the best-value block in the course. Paper 3 is one hour, two questions and 20% of the Higher Level grade, structured as a scaffolded investigation into unfamiliar mathematics where each part establishes something the next part uses. School mock papers in Dubai do not always include one, so some students meet the format first in the examination. The assessed skills are reading the whole question before starting and recording what each part has established, and four to six sessions of past questions usually shifts the score.

Where do IB maths students from Motor City go to school?+

Out of the community. GEMS Metropole School is inside Motor City but runs a British curriculum through IGCSE, so there is no Diploma cohort here. Students taking IB mathematics travel to JESS Arabian Ranches, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City, Greenfield International School, North London Collegiate School Dubai or Emirates International School Meadows. That commute is why Diploma sessions from this postcode start at about 18:00. We name schools as market context and hold no relationship with any of them.

Can a session cover both fluency work and a marked paper?+

Badly, and it is better to separate them. Non-calculator fluency wants short frequent contact with marking between sessions, which suits a 45-minute slot three times a fortnight. A past paper attempted under time and then marked line by line against the scheme does not compress into part of a session; it wants a full hour. Online those two shapes can sit on different evenings in the same week, at 18:00 and 20:00. A visiting tutor needing a two-hour minimum has to combine them, which serves neither well.

Does an IB maths tutor travel to houses in Motor City?+

Independent tutors and agencies in Dubai do, at AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 rate table and up to about AED 500 for independent home tutors with travel included. IB Gram does not, anywhere in the UAE. For mathematics specifically the online format has a direct advantage beyond tutor choice: a shared whiteboard the student writes on produces a visible record of the working, which is what has to be marked, and every session is recorded so a worked solution can be rewatched during revision.

How many sessions does a conventions block take?+

Four to six, and it is the cheapest high-yield block in the subject. The work is accuracy rules, exact values, intermediate rounding, command term obligations, visible method and notation, practised on questions where the content is already secure so the only new thing is the convention. The effect is verifiable: mark a fresh paper twice at the end of the block, once for mathematics and once for conventions, and compare the gap with the one measured at the start. If it has not narrowed, the diagnosis was wrong.

What does a maths specialist need from us before the diagnostic lesson?+

The course — Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation — the level, a marked paper, and the school's deadline for the Exploration. The marked paper does most of the work: it identifies the weak topic areas, exposes how much of the loss is convention, and provides the baseline that the end-of-block comparison runs against. The school's Exploration deadline matters because that component is 20% of the grade and, once submitted, cannot be improved however the rest of the plan goes.

Mark the paper twice and start with the difference

For a capable mathematics student who keeps underperforming, the fastest useful exercise is to take a marked past paper and score it twice: once for the mathematics and once for the conventions alone — three significant figures, exact values, visible method, defined variables, command terms obeyed. The gap between those two numbers is marks available without learning anything new, and for many students it is four or five a paper. Send the course, the level, a marked script and the Exploration deadline, and take the free diagnostic lesson.
