IB Physics Tutor in Motor City

Families looking for an IB physics tutor in Motor City are often really deciding between things: IB Physics or A Level Physics, Higher or Standard Level, physics or another science, and whether the mathematics course underneath it will hold. This page compares all four honestly, then sets out what physics actually assumes from Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits.

IB & IGCSE in Motor City

Four comparisons that decide how physics goes

Physics is the Diploma subject most often chosen for the wrong reason and abandoned for the right one. Students take it because it sounds like the serious science, or because an engineering degree was mentioned once, and then discover in DP1 that the limiting factor is not their grasp of mechanics but their algebra. Families in Motor City usually arrive at this page having already made one of four comparisons badly, and the page is organised around putting them right before any hours are bought.

The first comparison is IB Physics against A Level Physics, which is a live choice here because GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs a British curriculum to IGCSE and then a sixth form, while the Diploma schools sit across the Dubailand corridor. The two qualifications assess differently: the IB spreads assessment across a 36% paper of multiple choice and data analysis, a 44% extended-response paper and a 20% internally assessed investigation, while A Level concentrates it in terminal papers with a separate practical endorsement. Neither is harder in the abstract; they reward different students, and a family that knows which kind of student they have can make the choice in an afternoon rather than regretting it in DP2.

The second is physics against the other sciences, which should be decided by degree requirement rather than by preference. Engineering and physics routes generally want Physics with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy generally want Chemistry and often Biology, with physics optional. A student who takes Physics HL for a medical application and Biology SL has frequently got that the wrong way round, and no amount of tutoring afterwards recovers a subject that was not taken at the level the course wanted.

The third is Higher against Standard Level, which is a time-budget question rather than an intelligence test. Higher Level carries additional content and deeper application in the same components, and a student taking three Higher Level sciences has three internally assessed investigations with overlapping school deadlines plus the Extended Essay and the TOK essay in the same period. That is a scheduling load rather than an intellectual one, and it is invisible on a timetable until DP2.

The fourth, and the one almost nobody makes deliberately, is the mathematics course underneath. IB Physics assumes a specific set of mathematical techniques, and the two mathematics courses supply them differently. A student on Applications and Interpretation taking Physics HL will meet mathematical demands their mathematics course does not drill, and that is a predictable, fixable and usually unanticipated problem. Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video, sessions run 45 or 60 minutes to 21:00, and there are no home visits anywhere in the UAE.

  • A Level concentrates assessment in terminal papers; the IB spreads it
  • Engineering and physics routes generally want Physics with Analysis and Approaches
  • Higher Level is more content and deeper application, not harder questions
  • Applications and Interpretation does not drill everything Physics HL assumes
  • Sessions run 45 or 60 minutes to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time and are recorded

Taken at Higher or Standard Level. Paper 1 at 36% comprises multiple choice and data analysis; Paper 2 at 44% is extended response; the internally assessed scientific investigation is 20%, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Higher Level extends content and depth within the same components rather than adding a different paper type.

Diploma Physics near Motor City is taught at JESS Arabian Ranches, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Fairgreen International School, Greenfield International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai among others. None sits inside the community, so students commute and sessions from this postcode start at about 18:00.

A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level Physics, the alternative route

Included here because it is the genuine alternative for a Motor City family. Assessment is concentrated in terminal written papers with a separate practical endorsement rather than a graded internal assessment, and the subject is taken as one of three or four rather than as one of six. Depth per subject is greater; breadth across the programme is narrower.

GEMS Metropole School inside Motor City runs the British curriculum, which makes A Level Physics the path of least resistance for families already there. The decision should turn on whether the student performs better with assessment spread across two years or concentrated at the end, and on whether the university list prefers breadth or depth.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics, before either route

Cambridge 0625 or the Pearson equivalent, tiered on the Cambridge route into Core and Extended. Content overlaps substantially with early post-16 physics in mechanics and electricity, but the mathematical demand is lower and uncertainty treatment is largely absent, which is the main gap a student carries forward into either qualification.

Separate sciences rather than a combined award is the entry that keeps both IB Physics Higher Level and A Level Physics open without an argument at sixteen. For a Motor City family at GEMS Metropole School or a neighbouring British-curriculum school, that makes the Year 9 option decision the first of the four comparisons on this page.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The physics topics and components most requested from the Motor City area, with the mathematical technique each one leans on. The mathematics column is the part most revision plans omit.

Mechanics and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum and energy. Leans on simultaneous equations, quadratics for projectile timing and vector resolution. Sign conventions cause more loss than the physics, particularly in momentum problems involving a reversal of direction.

Circular motion and gravitation

HL and SL

Angular quantities, centripetal force, gravitational fields and potential. Leans on algebraic rearrangement of inverse-square relationships and on comfort with ratios. Confusing field strength with potential, and treating potential as a vector, are the standing errors.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

Current, potential difference, resistance in combination, internal resistance and power. Leans on simultaneous equations and on reciprocal arithmetic for parallel resistance. Students reproduce rules without applying them to the specific network in the question.

Fields and electromagnetism

HL and SL

Electric and magnetic fields, induction and alternating current. Leans on trigonometry for flux through an angled area and on gradient interpretation. Direction conventions and the sign of an induced effect are where marks are routinely conceded.

Waves and oscillations

HL and SL

Simple harmonic motion, superposition, interference, diffraction and standing waves. Leans heavily on trigonometric functions, radians and phase relationships — the clearest example of a topic where a weak mathematics course shows up as a physics problem.

Thermal physics

HL and SL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat, the gas laws and the kinetic model. Leans on proportional reasoning and unit conversion between degrees Celsius and kelvin. Heating-curve questions where a specific heat capacity is applied across a phase change are the recurring error.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, mass defect and the photoelectric effect. Leans on exponentials and logarithms for decay, and on careful unit handling between electronvolts and joules, which is a high-frequency source of avoidable loss.

Paper 1B, data analysis

HL and SL

Gradients, intercepts, error bars, uncertainty propagation and linearising a relationship to test it. Leans on straight-line algebra and on rearranging a proposed law into linear form — a closed technique set that four focused sessions normally covers.

Paper 2, extended response

HL and SL

Forty-four per cent of the grade. Leans less on mathematics and more on structure: name the principle, apply it to the situation, then evaluate where asked. Students who describe what happens rather than naming the law have written correct physics and scored low.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Internally assessed, 20% of the grade, 24 marks across four criteria at six marks each. Leans on uncertainty propagation and graphical analysis. Weak evaluations cost more than weak data, because the criterion wants methodological limits and specific realistic improvements.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The third exists because physics and mathematics are frequently one problem rather than two.

Physics content and technique

A weekly session on the topics the marked work identifies, worked through past questions with the published scheme read afterwards. The structural work on Paper 2 — naming the principle, applying it, evaluating where asked — runs alongside, because it is a habit that needs repetition over weeks rather than a single explanation.

  • Topic selection driven by the marked script
  • Paper 2 answer structure practised on secure content first
  • Past questions referenced at source, never redistributed
  • Six to ten sessions for two or three topics

Data analysis and uncertainty intensive

Four sessions covering the whole of Paper 1B: gradients and intercepts, absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products and powers, error bars, maximum and minimum gradient lines, and linearising a relationship to test it. A closed technique set with no new physics content attached.

  • Every technique in the component covered in four sessions
  • Worked from real data rather than invented numbers
  • Feeds directly into the investigation's data analysis criterion
  • Suits a student with secure content and a weak Paper 1B

Physics-and-mathematics pairing

A combined block for a student whose physics problem is actually a mathematics problem: vector resolution, simultaneous equations, trigonometric functions in radians, exponentials and logarithms, and rearranging an inverse-square relationship. Taught in physics contexts so the transfer is immediate rather than hoped for.

  • Diagnosed from physics scripts, not from mathematics ones
  • Techniques taught inside physics problems
  • Especially relevant for Applications and Interpretation students
  • Six to eight sessions, usually in DP1

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Motor City

01

IB Physics or A Level Physics?

For a Motor City family this is a real choice rather than an academic one, because GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs the British curriculum through to sixth form while the Diploma schools sit across the corridor. Staying put means A Level; moving means the Diploma. The decision is usually made on school preference and then the subject consequences are discovered afterwards, which is the wrong order.

The assessment models differ in a way that suits different students. IB Physics spreads the grade across a 36% paper of multiple choice and data analysis, a 44% extended-response paper, and a 20% internally assessed investigation marked in school and moderated externally. That 20% is coursework in effect: planned, executed and written over weeks, with a school deadline. A Level Physics concentrates assessment in terminal written papers with a separate practical endorsement that is reported rather than graded into the subject result.

So a student who performs well on sustained work with a deadline and less well in a three-hour hall gains from the IB structure. A student who revises hard, performs under pressure and finds extended coursework a grind gains from A Level. That is a more useful basis for the decision than any general claim about which qualification is more rigorous.

The breadth difference matters too. A Level Physics is one of three or four subjects, so depth per subject is greater and the timetable is narrower. IB Physics is one of six subjects plus the core, which means less time per subject and the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service competing for the same evenings. A student who wants to specialise early is poorly served by six subjects; a student whose university list is unsettled is well served by them.

What physics assumes from your child's mathematics course

This is the comparison nobody makes deliberately and the one that causes the most avoidable difficulty. IB Physics assumes a set of mathematical techniques, and the two Diploma mathematics courses supply them to different depths. Analysis and Approaches builds algebraic manipulation, trigonometric functions and calculus. Applications and Interpretation builds modelling, statistics and interpretation, with less drilled algebra and lighter trigonometric work.

The result is predictable. A student taking Physics Higher Level alongside Applications and Interpretation will meet waves and oscillations questions needing fluent trigonometric manipulation in radians, decay problems needing exponentials and logarithms, field problems needing confident rearrangement of inverse-square relationships, and mechanics needing vector resolution — and their mathematics course will not have drilled several of those. The physics is not the obstacle; the technique underneath it is.

This is entirely fixable and it is cheapest to fix in DP1. Six to eight sessions teaching the specific techniques inside physics problems rather than as abstract mathematics closes most of it, and teaching them in context matters because transfer from a mathematics lesson to a physics question is exactly what does not happen reliably. A student who can solve simultaneous equations in a mathematics class and cannot apply them to a two-loop circuit has a transfer problem, not a knowledge one.

The practical advice for a family choosing subjects is simply to make the pairing deliberately. If physics is the priority and the degree list includes engineering or physics, Analysis and Approaches is the natural partner and several degree routes specify it anyway. If Applications and Interpretation is the right mathematics course for other reasons, take it — and budget for the technique gap in DP1 rather than discovering it in DP2.

Physics against the other sciences, by destination

Subject choice should be read backwards from the degree, and physics is the science where that discipline is most often skipped. Students take Physics Higher Level because it signals seriousness, and then apply to courses that never asked for it while omitting something that did. The table below gives the usual pattern as a starting point for reading each university's own admissions page, which is the only reliable source and a thirty-minute job for a shortlist of six.

The broad shape is this. Engineering of most kinds wants Physics with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, often both at Higher Level, and chemical or materials engineering adds Chemistry. Physics and astrophysics degrees want Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level. Computer science usually wants Mathematics and treats Physics as optional. Architecture varies widely and is worth checking individually. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine want Chemistry, usually at Higher Level, often with Biology, and treat Physics as optional or irrelevant.

The practical consequence for a Motor City family is a sequencing instruction rather than a recommendation. Build the shortlist of likely degree routes first, even loosely. Read the admissions requirements for each. Then choose the three Higher Level subjects to satisfy the union of those requirements, and only then think about preference. A student with an unsettled list should favour the combination that keeps the most routes open, which is usually Mathematics Analysis and Approaches plus two sciences at Higher Level.

One caution that belongs here. No amount of tutoring is a requirement for admission to anything, and any provider implying that a degree route depends on buying lessons is manufacturing urgency. Equally, tutoring cannot substitute for a subject that was not taken, which is why the subject-choice conversation is worth more than any number of sessions afterwards.

Higher against Standard Level Physics

Higher Level Physics is more content and deeper application within the same components rather than a different style of paper. The additional material raises the volume substantially and the expectation of depth raises it again, which makes the decision a question of available hours rather than of ability. A student capable of a 6 at Standard Level is usually capable of the Higher Level material given the time; the question is whether the time exists alongside five other subjects and the core.

The load that families underestimate is the internally assessed one. Every Group 4 subject carries a scientific investigation worth 20% of its grade, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A student taking three Higher Level sciences carries three of those, and schools tend to set their deadlines in overlapping windows during DP2, with the Extended Essay and the TOK essay in the same period. That is a real timetable problem that does not appear on a timetable.

The decision should therefore be anchored to the degree requirement. Where a target route requires Physics at Higher Level, as most engineering and physics degrees do, the decision is made. Where it does not, Standard Level Physics with a stronger overall point total is frequently the better outcome, and a 7 at Standard Level reads better on an application than a 4 at Higher Level.

If a mismatch has already happened, raise it early. A move from Higher to Standard Level is generally possible in the first term of DP1 and progressively harder afterwards, and the school decides. What helps is marked evidence across the Higher Level-only material, because that is what the school is judging. A few sessions of real Higher Level questions, marked honestly, give the Diploma coordinator something concrete to work from rather than a parental impression.

The investigation, compared with an A Level practical endorsement

  • The IB investigation is 20% of the grade and marked out of 24
  • Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation score six marks each
  • An A Level practical endorsement is reported rather than graded into the subject
  • Evaluation wants methodological limits, not human error or more time
  • A tutor teaches and gives feedback; the student writes every submitted word

This is the clearest single difference between the two routes and the one that most often decides which suits a student. The IB scientific investigation is worth 20% of the physics grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria at six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is planned, executed and written by the student over weeks, submitted to a school deadline, marked in school and moderated externally. It is, in effect, graded coursework.

An A Level practical endorsement works differently: practical competence is assessed and reported, but it does not carry a percentage of the subject grade in the same way. The written papers carry the grade. For a student who finds extended independent work difficult, that difference is worth real points; for a student who works steadily and writes well, the IB structure hands them a fifth of the grade on terms they can control.

Within the IB investigation, the symmetry of the four criteria is what students miss. Excellent data with a thin evaluation discards a quarter of the component, and evaluation is routinely written as a closing paragraph rather than as six marks of assessed work. It credits specific methodological limitations and realistic targeted improvements: an instrument resolution limit propagated into a percentage uncertainty scores, while human error and a shortage of time score nothing.

The honesty line is strict and this market does not always respect it. At least one site ranking for UAE IB searches sells completed Internal Assessments; submitting purchased work is academic misconduct under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student. A tutor may interrogate the research question, check the method's feasibility against the apparatus actually available, teach uncertainty propagation, explain what each criterion credits using the published descriptors, and read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion a passage fails. A tutor may not design the investigation, process the data, write or rewrite any part of the report, or edit prose to a standard the student could not produce.

06

Costing physics and mathematics together

Because physics problems are so often mathematics problems, the sensible unit of cost for a family in this position is the pairing rather than the subject. A student on Physics Higher Level with Applications and Interpretation frequently needs a technique block in DP1 and then physics support in DP2, and planning for both from the start is cheaper than discovering the second halfway through.

The published Dubai bands, read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the entry level; Unitors IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150; Bestimate's 2026 rate table at AED 150-300 for qualified online subject tutors, AED 180-350 for in-home one-to-one and AED 200-450 or above for IB and IGCSE specialists, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500 once travel is included; TutorChase at AED 270; BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end. Monthly estimates for one weekly hour run roughly AED 240-600, AED 600-1,200 and AED 1,000-2,000 or above across the tiers.

The pairing can often be covered by one tutor, which is worth asking about directly. A specialist who teaches both Physics and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches can diagnose a physics script and treat the technique gap in the same session, which is more efficient than two separate relationships and removes the transfer problem entirely. Where one tutor cannot cover both to a high standard, splitting is still the better outcome, but it costs a second slot in an already congested evening.

IB Gram publishes no fixed hourly rate on this page, because level, component and urgency move it, and a quote follows the free diagnostic lesson rather than preceding it. For context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within an AED 2.5 billion total. School fees are flat; the tutoring decision is the variable one.

Scheduling physics from Motor City

  • Diploma Physics students from Motor City are available from about 18:00
  • Technique sessions suit 45 minutes; marked papers want a full hour
  • A visiting tutor's two-hour minimum forces those two into one appointment
  • A shared whiteboard matters for diagrams, circuits and uncertainty work
  • No UAE office, centre or branch, and no home visits anywhere in the UAE

Diploma Physics students from Motor City commute out of the community, because GEMS Metropole School runs the British curriculum through IGCSE and into sixth form while the IB schools sit across the Dubailand corridor. Students are generally home between 16:30 and 17:30, which makes about 18:00 the earliest realistic session start and puts the busiest physics bookings at 18:00 and 19:00.

That matters for physics specifically because of the two session shapes the subject needs. A technique or data-analysis session works well at 45 minutes and benefits from frequency. A past-paper session with extended-response marking wants a full hour. Online, those two can sit on different evenings in the same week; with a visiting tutor they have to be combined into one long appointment, because forty to sixty minutes of travel each way requires a two-hour minimum booking and caps the latest workable start at roughly 18:30.

There is also a format advantage particular to physics, which is the shared whiteboard. Uncertainty propagation, free-body diagrams, circuit redrawing and graph work all have to be seen to be corrected, and a surface both parties can write on produces a record of the working that the student keeps. Every session is recorded, which matters most for the technique sessions a student will want to watch again during revision.

Home visits are nonetheless the right purchase for some students, and the honest cases are a younger student who needs an adult present or one whose written method needs correcting as it is produced. IB Gram does not offer them anywhere in the UAE — that is an India-only service — and we have no UAE office, centre or branch. The comparison here is informational rather than persuasive.

08

Starting, and the footnotes that belong on every page here

  • Level, the paired mathematics course, a marked paper and the investigation dates
  • The diagnosis separates the physics problem from the mathematics one
  • One to three working days to match; a combined physics and maths tutor is narrower
  • No IB dates published here; Cambridge and Pearson dates come from the boards
  • No regulator or awarding-body approval, no examiner status asserted

Send the level, the mathematics course the student is taking alongside, a marked physics paper and the school's investigation dates. A specialist runs a free diagnostic lesson and sends a written note within a working day separating the physics problem from the mathematics problem, with a session estimate against each. Nothing is charged before you read it, and where the honest answer is that the Higher Level target is not reachable in the time left, the note says so and proposes what is.

Availability for IB Physics is good at both levels for UAE evening slots, with a match normally inside one to three working days. A tutor who covers both Physics and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches to a high standard is a narrower pool but routinely available, and worth asking for where the diagnosis points at the technique gap. Where no UAE-resident specialist is free, the match comes from our India-based IB faculty teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and we say so before the booking.

On dates, briefly. UAE candidates sit the May session. This page publishes no IB examination or results date, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself; a family reorganises a term around an examination date, so your Diploma coordinator is the right source. For students on the British route first, Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series with the February/March series offered to India only, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November — the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

The claim this page refuses first is the one a physics parent hears most often. We do not describe any tutor as a current IB examiner, because that status cannot be evidenced from Motor City or anywhere else, and a page comparing Diploma physics with A Level physics would be the obvious place to smuggle it in. The remaining refusals follow from the same rule: IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from the IB, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, is not an examination centre, and has no UAE office. On the tutor's own side there is a licence that does exist and can be shown to you: the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

GEMS Metropole School runs the British curriculum through IGCSE and into sixth form, so A Level Physics is the default here and Diploma students commute out of the community entirely.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches runs the Diploma, so this is the community where IB Physics against A Level Physics is most often an active choice rather than a default.

Dubai Hills Estate

GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail and Kings' School Dubai draw heavily from here with large British-curriculum intakes, so the A Level route dominates and physics enquiries reflect that.

The Sustainable City

Fairgreen International School runs the full IB continuum, so students arrive into Diploma Physics from MYP rather than IGCSE and carry a different gap: design strength, quantitative weakness.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School and Bradenton Preparatory Academy sit inside the development and are primary-weighted, so physics enquiries from here are IGCSE 0625 rather than Diploma.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School and Durham School Dubai sit in this corridor, offering both routes within reach, which makes it a useful reference point for families comparing them.

DAMAC Hills

No post-16 science provision inside the community, so every student commutes and the 18:30 and 19:00 slots dominate physics bookings from this postcode.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which mathematics course goes with it

Physics Higher Level with Applications and Interpretation is a different proposition from Physics Higher Level with Analysis and Approaches, and the diagnosis depends on knowing which. It is the single most useful piece of information in a first message about physics and the one most often omitted.

  2. 02

Read the degree list before the subject list

Build even a loose shortlist of likely degree routes and read each university's own admissions requirements. Most engineering and physics routes want Physics with Analysis and Approaches, often both at Higher Level; medicine generally wants Chemistry instead. Thirty minutes of reading settles a two-year commitment.

  3. 03

    Free diagnostic lesson

A full session at no charge spent on the student's own marked physics work, specifically to separate the physics problem from the mathematics underneath it. A student who can state Newton's second law and cannot resolve a vector has a technique gap, and that is a different purchase.

  4. 04

Put the technique block in DP1

Six to eight sessions teaching the specific mathematical techniques inside physics problems — vector resolution, simultaneous equations, radians, exponentials, inverse-square rearrangement. Taught in context, because transfer from a mathematics lesson to a physics question is exactly what does not happen reliably.

  5. 05

Review on the school's own marks

Progress is judged on the next internal assessment or mock, read against the original diagnosis. If the physics score has not moved but the technique work has landed, the next block is content; if neither has moved, the between-session work is the thing to examine first.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The mathematics pairing diagnosed first

Physics problems are frequently technique problems: vector resolution, radians, exponentials, inverse-square rearrangement. We read the physics script to find out which, because teaching more physics to a student with a technique gap is the commonest waste in this subject.

Both routes compared honestly

IB Physics spreads the grade across two papers and a graded 20% investigation; A Level concentrates it in terminal papers with a reported practical endorsement. We set out which student each suits rather than claiming one qualification is more rigorous.

Degree requirements described, then verified

Engineering and physics routes generally want Physics with Analysis and Approaches; medicine generally wants Chemistry. We give the usual pattern and then tell you to read each university's own admissions page, because requirements differ and change.

Higher Level framed as a time budget

Higher Level is more content and deeper application, not harder questions on the same content. The real constraint is three internally assessed investigations with overlapping deadlines plus the Extended Essay and the TOK essay in the same period.

The investigation treated as 20%

Twenty-four marks across four criteria at six each, with evaluation carrying as much as data analysis. We check the method's feasibility against the apparatus actually available before data is collected, which is the one hour that cannot be bought back later.

One tutor for both subjects where possible

A specialist who teaches Physics and Analysis and Approaches can diagnose a physics script and treat the technique gap in the same session, which removes the transfer problem and saves a slot in an already congested Motor City evening.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Motor City: your questions answered

Should my child take IB Physics or A Level Physics?+

It depends on how they perform rather than on which qualification is harder. IB Physics spreads the grade across a 36% paper of multiple choice and data analysis, a 44% extended-response paper and a 20% internally assessed investigation planned and written over weeks to a school deadline. A Level concentrates the grade in terminal written papers with a separate practical endorsement reported rather than graded in. A student who works steadily to deadlines gains from the IB structure; a student who revises hard and performs under pressure gains from A Level.

Can my child take Physics HL with Applications and Interpretation?+

Yes, and it is worth doing with open eyes. Physics assumes a set of mathematical techniques that Analysis and Approaches drills more heavily: trigonometric functions in radians for waves and oscillations, exponentials and logarithms for decay, vector resolution for mechanics and fields, and confident rearrangement of inverse-square relationships. Applications and Interpretation covers less of that ground at the same depth, while being stronger on statistical treatment of data, which helps the investigation. Budget six to eight technique sessions in DP1 rather than discovering the gap in DP2.

Why is my child good at maths but losing marks in physics?+

Usually a transfer problem rather than a knowledge problem. A student who can solve simultaneous equations in a mathematics lesson and cannot apply them to a two-loop circuit has both pieces and no bridge between them. The same pattern shows up with trigonometry in flux questions and with exponentials in decay problems. The fix is to teach the technique inside physics contexts rather than abstractly, which is why the technique block is diagnosed from physics scripts and not from mathematics ones.

Does an engineering degree need Physics at Higher Level?+

Most engineering routes want Physics, commonly at Higher Level, with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches alongside and often also at Higher Level. Chemical and materials engineering add Chemistry. Physics and astrophysics degrees want Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level. But requirements differ by country and institution and they change, so the only reliable step is reading each university's own admissions page for the year of entry. For a shortlist of six that is about thirty minutes of work and it settles a two-year commitment.

Is Physics worth taking for a medical application?+

Usually not as a priority. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine generally require Chemistry, often at Higher Level, frequently with Biology, and treat Physics as optional or irrelevant. A student who takes Physics Higher Level and Biology Standard Level for a medical application has often got the levels the wrong way round. Check each institution's own requirements, because this is the pattern rather than a rule, and a small number of programmes do name a second science without specifying which.

How much more work is Physics HL than SL?+

Substantially more content and a deeper expectation of application within the same three components, rather than harder papers on the same material. The load families underestimate is the internally assessed one: every Group 4 subject carries an investigation worth 20% of its grade, so three Higher Level sciences means three of them, usually with overlapping school deadlines during DP2 and the Extended Essay and TOK essay in the same period. That is a timetable problem that does not appear on a timetable.

Can my child move from Physics HL to SL partway through?+

Often in the first term of DP1, and progressively harder after that, with the school deciding rather than the family. What helps the conversation is marked evidence on the Higher Level-only material specifically, because that is what the school is judging. A few sessions of real Higher Level questions, marked honestly, give the Diploma coordinator something concrete. Where the move is not possible, a revised target grade with the hours redirected to another subject is usually a better plan than more hours at the same level.

What is the difference between the IB investigation and an A Level practical?+

The IB scientific investigation is worth 20% of the physics grade and is marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. It is planned, executed and written by the student over weeks, submitted to a school deadline, marked in school and moderated externally — graded coursework in effect. An A Level practical endorsement assesses and reports practical competence without carrying a percentage of the subject grade in the same way; the written papers carry the grade.

Where do the investigation marks actually go missing in physics?+

Evaluation most often, because students write it as a closing paragraph rather than as six marks of assessed work. It credits specific methodological limitations and realistic targeted improvements, so an instrument resolution limit propagated into a percentage uncertainty scores while human error and a shortage of time score nothing. Research design is the second: a question whose variables cannot be controlled to the precision the analysis needs, or whose apparatus the school does not have, produces data that cannot support a conclusion however well written.

Is the Paper 1B data analysis section worth a separate block?+

For a student with secure content and a weak Paper 1B, it is the highest-yield short block in the subject. The whole component is a closed technique set: gradients and intercepts, absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products and powers, error bars, maximum and minimum gradient lines, and linearising a relationship to test it. Four focused sessions normally covers all of it, and the same work feeds directly into the investigation's data analysis criterion, so it pays twice.

Can one tutor cover both Physics and IB Mathematics?+

Many can cover Physics with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches to a high standard, and where that is the case it is worth asking for. A single tutor can diagnose a physics script, identify the technique gap underneath it and treat both in the same session, which removes the transfer problem entirely and saves a slot in an already congested Motor City evening. Where one tutor cannot cover both properly, splitting is still better than compromising on either, but it costs a second appointment.

What time can a physics session start from Motor City?+

About 18:00 for Diploma students, because GEMS Metropole School inside the community runs the British curriculum through IGCSE and into sixth form, so IB students commute out across the Dubailand corridor and are generally home between 16:30 and 17:30. Online sessions run to 21:00 on Gulf Standard Time, which allows a 45-minute technique session and a full-hour paper session on different evenings in the same week. A visiting tutor's two-hour minimum and roughly 18:30 latest start forces those into one long appointment.

Does a physics tutor visit homes in Motor City?+

Independent tutors and agencies in Dubai do, at AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 rate table and up to about AED 500 for independent home tutors with travel included. IB Gram does not, anywhere in the UAE. For physics there is also a format point worth making: free-body diagrams, circuit redrawing, graph work and uncertainty propagation all have to be seen to be corrected, and a shared whiteboard both parties write on produces a record of the working that the student keeps and can rewatch.

Which Dubai schools near Motor City teach IB Physics?+

None inside the community. GEMS Metropole School runs a British curriculum, so Diploma Physics students from Motor City travel to JESS Arabian Ranches, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City, Greenfield International School, North London Collegiate School Dubai or Emirates International School Meadows. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them IB-curriculum, creating 16,846 places. We name schools as market context and hold no affiliation with any of them.

Decide the pairing, then buy the physics

Physics rarely fails on physics. It fails on a mathematics course that did not drill vector resolution or radians, on a Higher Level choice made without counting the internally assessed load, or on a subject combination assembled before anyone read a university's admissions page. So settle those first: which mathematics course sits underneath, whether the degree list actually asks for Physics at Higher Level, and whether three Higher Level sciences leave room for three investigations plus the core. Send the level, the paired mathematics course and a marked paper, and take the free diagnostic lesson.
