IB MYP Tutor in Emaar Beachfront

An IB MYP tutor in Emaar Beachfront is working with a marking system most parents have never seen explained. Four criteria per subject, each scored out of eight, converted to a 1-7 grade by a boundary table the school publishes. This page sets out those criteria subject group by subject group, and compares MYP honestly against the IGCSE route many neighbouring schools take at 16. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Emaar Beachfront

A different marking system, and the comparison parents here are making

The Middle Years Programme does not mark out of a hundred. Each subject is assessed against four published criteria, each scored from zero to eight, and the school converts the criterion profile into a grade from one to seven using a boundary table it publishes itself. A student can hold a strong criterion A and a weak criterion D and receive a grade that reveals neither. Parents reading a report see the number and not the shape, which is why MYP progress so often feels unreadable compared with a percentage.

This matters because the shape is the actionable part. In mathematics, criterion A rewards knowing and understanding, criterion B rewards investigating patterns, criterion C rewards communication and criterion D rewards applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student who is accurate but never generalises a pattern will sit in the middle bands forever, and no amount of extra practice on calculation will move them, because the marks they are missing are not awarded for calculation. The fix is specific and it is invisible without the criterion breakdown.

The second thing families in Emaar Beachfront are doing is comparing routes. Several schools serving this cluster run the MYP to Year 9 and then switch to IGCSE, while others carry the programme to Year 11 before the Diploma. That means a child in one Beachfront tower can be criterion-marked at fifteen while the child in the next tower sits tiered written papers. Parents compare notes and reasonably conclude one route must be better. The honest position is that they prepare students differently for different things, and this page sets out how.

Emaar Beachfront's practical situation sets the timetable for any of this. The peninsula has one road link, no school and no tuition centre inside it, and visitor access to tower basements needs a resident escort. Children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30. MYP work is frequently project-shaped rather than problem-shaped, which means it needs longer uninterrupted blocks than a Diploma revision session does. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits exist only in our India service.

What follows explains the criteria for each subject group, compares the MYP and IGCSE routes at 16 on the things that actually differ, describes what changes between MYP 1 and MYP 5, sets out how the Personal Project is marked and when coaching helps, names the step into the Diploma and the two gaps MYP students typically carry into it, and explains the honesty boundary on project work. Confirm your school's own criterion boundaries and reporting practice, because conversion tables are set at school level rather than by the IB.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme spans five years and changes character through them. These are the stages, and the point at which this cluster's schools diverge.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Middle Years Programme, Years 7 to 9

Criterion marking begins and the habits that decide later grades form here. Students learn to investigate, to communicate a method and to apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, which are the three things later criteria keep rewarding. A student who is accurate and silent will hold a middle grade through all three years without anybody identifying why.

This is the point at which several schools serving the Beachfront and Harbour towers plan a switch to IGCSE at the end of Year 9. Ask which route your school intends before investing in criterion-specific coaching.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Middle Years Programme, Years 10 and 11

The final two years, where criterion demands rise sharply and the Personal Project runs. Subject work moves towards extended tasks and longer written responses, and the gap between students who can structure an argument and students who can recall content widens considerably.

Some schools enter MYP 5 students for the IB's optional external assessment leading to the MYP certificate; others award school-based grades only. Ask which applies, because it changes what the final year is preparing for.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme after MYP

Six subjects with published component weightings plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. MYP students usually arrive comfortable with investigation and extended writing, and short of procedural speed under timed conditions, which is the one gap worth addressing in the first term of DP1.

UAE schools sit the May session. No IB examination or results date is published on this page because none could be confirmed from the IB for this project; your coordinator holds the real calendar.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE after MYP 3, the alternative route

Tiered written examinations in individual subjects with published syllabus codes, taken by students whose schools switch at the end of Year 9. A different assessment model rather than a lesser one: narrower, more procedural, and with a clearer external reference point at 16.

UAE candidates sit Cambridge in June or November and Pearson in May/June or November. If your school switches, the February/March Cambridge series is India-only and should not appear in any plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP subjects are grouped, and each group has its own four criteria. These are the groups families in this cluster ask for, with the criterion that most often holds a student back.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is where accurate students stall, because generalising a pattern and justifying the generalisation is a different skill from calculating correctly.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion C is the usual weakness: students process data competently and write an evaluation that names no specific limitation of their own method.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students who read well and write fluently often lose marks under organising, because a response with good ideas in no deliberate order cannot reach the upper bands however well written it is.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Criteria cover listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed within a phase rather than a year group. A student can be in different phases in different skills, and support has to be matched to the phase the school has placed them in rather than to their age.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the criterion that separates grades at MYP 4 and 5, and it rewards a judgement supported by evidence rather than a balanced list of points.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Students who build first and document afterwards cannot reconstruct the evidence the criteria require, which is the single most common cause of a disappointing design grade.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and a strong final piece with no documented development will not reach the top bands.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written and reflective criteria are often where marks are available to students who are not the strongest performers.

The Personal Project

Final MYP year

An independent project marked on its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. The process journal is evidence rather than decoration, and students who leave it until the end cannot produce the record the criteria ask for.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed against their own criteria, these units ask students to integrate two subject groups and explain the integration. Students treat them as double work rather than as a distinct task, and lose marks for not making the connection explicit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

MYP support needs formats that match how the work is assessed. These three do, and each targets a different part of the criterion profile.

Criterion-targeted weekly sessions

A weekly slot focused on the specific criterion holding the grade down, rather than on the subject generally. For a mathematics student stuck on investigating patterns, that means pattern tasks and generalisation practice rather than more calculation. The criterion descriptors are read with the student, not applied to them silently.

  • Session targets one named criterion at a time
  • Descriptors read with the student in their own words
  • Work produced in the format the criterion is assessed in
  • Progress measured against band descriptors, not percentages

Extended task and project coaching

Longer sessions through a design task, science investigation, interdisciplinary unit or the Personal Project, scheduled against the school's own deadline. Planning and documentation come first, because the criteria reward process evidence that cannot be reconstructed afterwards. The work is entirely the student's.

  • Planning and journal discipline established first
  • Scheduled from the school's deadline backwards
  • Documentation treated as evidence, not as a write-up
  • Feedback on the student's own work only

Transition block into DP or IGCSE

Six to eight sessions bridging MYP 5 into whichever route comes next. For a Diploma entrant that means procedural speed under timing and command-term literacy. For an IGCSE entrant it means tiered paper technique, mark-scheme reading and the syllabus codes the school will enter them for.

  • Diagnosed from MYP criterion profile, not from the grade
  • Timed procedural work for Diploma entrants
  • Paper technique and mark schemes for IGCSE entrants
  • Runs in the summer or the first term, before habits set

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Emaar Beachfront

01

What an MYP grade actually tells you, and what it hides

A grade of five in MYP mathematics is a conversion, not a score. Behind it sit four criterion marks, each from zero to eight, and the school's own boundary table that turns the profile into a single digit. Two students with the same grade can have opposite profiles: one strong on knowing and understanding and weak on communication, the other the reverse. They need completely different support and the report gives you no way to tell them apart.

This is why the first useful request a parent can make is for the criterion breakdown rather than the grade. Most schools hold it and many will share it when asked directly, often through the online reporting platform rather than the printed report. With the breakdown, a tutor can target the criterion that is costing the grade. Without it, the first two sessions go on reconstructing the profile from the student's work, which is possible but slower and less precise.

The hidden pattern worth looking for is a consistently low criterion across several subjects. A student weak on communication in mathematics, organising in language and literature, and processing and evaluating in sciences does not have three subject problems. They have one skill gap appearing three times, and a single block of work on structuring and justifying written responses will move all three grades. That diagnosis is only visible when the criterion profiles are read side by side, which almost nobody does.

Ask for the breakdown in writing rather than in a corridor conversation at a parents' evening, and ask for it termly. A single profile tells you where the student is; three profiles tell you whether the targeted criterion is actually moving, which is the only question that matters once support has started.

MYP to Year 11, or IGCSE from Year 10: the real comparison

Schools serving this cluster do both, which makes this a live question rather than an academic one. Carrying the MYP to Year 11 keeps a student inside criterion assessment for two more years, with extended tasks, the Personal Project and interdisciplinary work. Switching to IGCSE at the end of Year 9 moves them into tiered written examinations with published syllabus codes, external marking and a clear reference point at 16.

Each prepares a student well for something. MYP to Year 11 builds investigation, extended writing and reflection, which are exactly the skills the Diploma core demands, so MYP students often handle the Extended Essay and internal assessments better than their IGCSE-educated classmates. IGCSE builds procedural speed, mark-scheme literacy and examination stamina, which are exactly the skills Diploma written papers demand. Neither route is a disadvantage; each leaves a predictable gap.

The decision usually is not the family's to make, because it follows the school. Where it is a choice, the useful questions are about the student rather than the programme: does this child produce better work over three weeks or in ninety minutes, and do they need an external reference point at 16 for any reason, such as a possible move between school systems? An IGCSE grade travels more legibly between countries and systems than an MYP criterion profile does, which matters for families who may relocate.

One further point, often decisive in this cluster. Families who may relocate within the next few years should weigh portability heavily, because an admissions officer in another country reads a subject grade immediately and reads a criterion profile only if someone explains it to them. That is not an argument about educational quality; it is an argument about how a transcript is received by a stranger under time pressure.

03

What changes between MYP 1 and MYP 5

The criteria keep their names across the five years and the descriptors behind them do not stay still. In MYP 1 a student meets a criterion asking them to communicate a method and satisfies it with a clear explanation. By MYP 5 the same criterion expects appropriate mathematical language, consistent notation, and a form of presentation chosen for the audience. Parents reading the criterion name across a report series assume nothing changed, and then cannot explain why a student who scored six in Year 7 is scoring five in Year 10.

The second change is task length. Early MYP assessment tends to be contained: a task set, completed, marked. By MYP 4 and 5 students are producing extended work over weeks, with documentation requirements, and the skills that decide the grade shift from knowing the content to managing a process. A student who is organised scores above a student who is knowledgeable, which is uncomfortable and is what the criteria are designed to reward.

The third change is the Personal Project, which arrives in the final MYP year and is marked on its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. It is the first genuinely independent piece of work most students have produced, and the process journal is assessed evidence rather than a diary. Students who leave the journal until the project is finished cannot produce the record the criteria ask for, and no amount of quality in the final product compensates for it.

HOW MYP DEMANDS RISE ACROSS THE FIVE YEARS

MYP 1-2Short, contained tasksClear explanation and accurate contentRarely: most students cope

04

The Personal Project, coached from planning rather than writing

  • The grade rests heavily on documented process, not the finished product
  • Coaching pays in the first two sessions and very little at the end
  • The journal is assessed evidence and cannot be reconstructed afterwards
  • A tutor questions and gives feedback; the student does all the work

The Personal Project is marked on criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, and the grade is determined substantially by evidence the student generates while working rather than by the finished product. That inverts how students naturally approach it. They choose something ambitious, build it, and then write about it, discovering at the end that the criteria wanted a documented record of decisions, setbacks and adjustments that no longer exists in any retrievable form.

Coaching helps most at the start and barely at all at the end. In the first two sessions a tutor can test whether the goal is achievable in the time available, whether the student has access to whatever the project needs, and whether a credible success criterion can be stated. They can also establish the journal habit: short, dated entries recording decisions and reasons, kept throughout rather than assembled afterwards. That habit is worth more to the final grade than any amount of polish on the report.

The boundary is firm and worth stating. A tutor may question the goal, help the student articulate their own success criteria, ask what the journal is missing, read a draft report and give feedback on its structure and clarity. A tutor may not choose the project, do any part of the work, write or rewrite the report, or produce the journal entries. The project is explicitly the student's own, the school supervises it, and our tutors decline the other request directly rather than negotiating around it.

05

The step from MYP 5 into the Diploma

MYP students usually arrive in DP1 with two clear strengths and one clear gap. The strengths are investigation and extended writing: they have designed their own inquiries, documented process, written at length and reflected on their own work, so the Extended Essay, the internal assessments and Theory of Knowledge feel like familiar territory rather than a new genre. That advantage is real and it tends to show up in DP2 rather than in the first term.

The gap is procedural speed under timed conditions. Criterion assessment rewards a justified approach developed over time; Diploma written papers reward a correct answer produced quickly, with method visible and nothing extraneous. A student who has spent five years being assessed on reasoning and reflection meets a paper that wants neither, and the first mock exposes it. The repair is a term of timed procedural work, and it is cheap in September and expensive in March.

The second, smaller gap is command-term discipline. The Diploma uses a published command-term vocabulary where state, describe, explain, analyse and evaluate each set a ceiling, and MYP criterion language does not map onto it directly. A student who writes a thorough, reflective answer to a question that said state is spending time for nothing, and one who writes descriptively in response to evaluate cannot reach the top band. Two or three sessions on this early in DP1 changes every answer afterwards.

The practical version of all this is one conversation in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1. Twenty minutes spent identifying which of the two gaps applies, followed by six to eight sessions in the autumn, is worth more than a term of general subject tutoring in the spring of DP1 after a mock has already set the student's view of themselves.

06

Why MYP tutors are harder to find than Diploma tutors

  • Criterion judgement comes from having marked against descriptors
  • Good content teaching with no criterion work leaves the grade static
  • Ask a prospective tutor to name the four criteria for the subject group
  • A wider pool is the practical benefit of removing travel

There are fewer people who can tutor the MYP well than there are who can tutor the Diploma, and the reason is not difficulty. Diploma content is public, specific and examined externally, so a strong subject graduate can teach it credibly after reading the subject guide. MYP assessment depends on criterion descriptors applied with judgement, and judgement comes from having marked against them. A tutor who has never read a band descriptor can teach the content beautifully and leave the grade exactly where it was.

This produces a recognisable pattern in families around the Marina. A subject tutor is engaged, the sessions are good, the student enjoys them, the content knowledge improves, and the grade holds at five. The missing marks were in communicating, or in investigating patterns, or in thinking critically, and nothing in the sessions addressed those because nobody looked at which criterion was short. Parents conclude the child has reached their level, which is usually wrong.

The question to ask any prospective MYP tutor is direct: which criteria does this subject group use, and which one do you think is costing my child marks? A tutor who can name the four criteria and ask to see the breakdown is working in the right system. A tutor who answers in terms of topics has not noticed that the topics are not what is being marked. Removing travel from the equation widens the pool of people who can pass that test, which is the main practical argument for online delivery in this part of the programme.

07

What a first month of MYP support should produce

  • Session one ends with a criterion profile and a target criterion
  • Month one produces two pieces of work shaped like the real task
  • The checkpoint is the school's next assessed piece in that subject
  • If the criterion mark does not move, the plan changes rather than extends

Session one should end with a criterion profile, assembled from the school's breakdown if available and from the student's work if not, plus a judgement about which criterion is costing the most across subjects. That document is the plan. If a tutor finishes the first session talking about topics rather than criteria, the sessions that follow will improve content knowledge and not the grade, which is a genuinely common outcome and the reason this page spends so long on the point.

By the end of the first month, the student should be able to say in their own words what the targeted criterion rewards, and should have produced at least two pieces of work in the format that criterion is assessed in. Not practice questions, but work shaped like the real task: an investigation with a generalisation, a response with a deliberate structure, an evaluation naming specific limitations of their own method. Those pieces are the evidence that the work is landing.

Then the measure becomes the school's own marking. The honest checkpoint is the next piece of assessed work in that subject, read against the criterion that was targeted. If the criterion mark moves, continue. If it does not, the diagnosis was wrong or the practice was not in the right format, and that is a conversation to have immediately rather than at the end of the term. We would rather change a tutor or a plan in week four than defend either in week twelve.

Booking MYP support from Emaar Beachfront

  • Send year group, subject groups, criterion breakdown and the intended route
  • Project work belongs in a weekend ninety-minute block
  • Free trial producing a criterion profile and a target criterion
  • MYP matches take longer; we name the gap rather than substitute a content tutor

Send the year group, the subject groups you are concerned about, the criterion breakdown if your school publishes it, whether the school intends to continue the MYP to Year 11 or switch to IGCSE, and the hours that genuinely exist after a bus that leaves before 07:00 and returns after 15:30. The route question matters as much as the subject, because criterion coaching for a student switching to IGCSE in nine months is a different investment from criterion coaching for a student who has two more MYP years.

We match a tutor who works criterion by criterion in that subject group and propose a slot in Gulf Standard Time. Project work goes to weekend mornings because it needs ninety uninterrupted minutes. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, producing a criterion profile and a target rather than a sales conversation. If the match is wrong after the trial or in week four, we change the tutor.

The limits. MYP specialists are scarcer than Diploma specialists in every subject group, so matching can take longer, and for the smaller subject groups there are weeks when nobody suitable is free. We will say so and offer alternatives rather than putting a content tutor into a criterion problem. We cannot promise a grade, and for the Personal Project in particular the student has to do the work, which is not a policy position but what the criteria require.

One last note on expectations. MYP support rarely produces a dramatic result in a single term, because criterion marks move on assessed pieces and assessed pieces arrive on the school's schedule rather than ours. What it does produce, within a month, is a student who can say what the criterion rewards and work in that shape. That is the leading indicator, and it is the one to watch.

Where we tutor

Where this cluster's MYP students live and study

MYP work is often project-shaped, which needs longer uninterrupted blocks than revision does. This is what each nearby community does to the available time.

Emaar Beachfront

Towers on a reclaimed peninsula with one road link, no school inside it and escorted visitor parking. Project work needs ninety minutes, which on a weekday from here means 17:30 at the earliest or a weekend morning.

Dubai Harbour

Adjacent, around the cruise terminal and marina berths, on the same access corridor. Cruise-call days disrupt afternoons, which matters more for a long project session than for a short revision slot.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served, with more travelling tutors available. MYP-specific tutors are scarcer than Diploma ones everywhere, because fewer tutors have actually marked against criterion descriptors.

JBR

Long settled, with the cluster's most established independent market. Families here often engage a subject tutor who teaches topics well and has never read an MYP criterion, which produces confident content and a static grade.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most of this cluster's MYP teaching happens, including several full IB continuum schools. Personal Project deadlines along this corridor tend to cluster, which concentrates demand for planning-stage coaching.

The Meadows and Jumeirah Park

Villa communities with both IB continuum and British provision, which is why families here compare the MYP and IGCSE routes more actively than most. The commute is longer and steadier, allowing an earlier weekday block.

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the criterion breakdown

The four criterion marks behind the grade, which many schools hold on their reporting platform even when the printed report shows only the digit. With the breakdown a tutor targets the criterion costing the grade. Without it, the first two sessions reconstruct the profile from the student's work.

  2. 02

Read the profiles across subjects together

A low criterion appearing in three subject groups is one skill gap, not three subject problems. Communication in mathematics, organising in language and literature and processing in sciences failing together points at a single block of work that moves all three grades at once.

  3. 03

    Confirm the route at 16

Whether the school carries the MYP to Year 11 or switches to IGCSE after Year 9 changes what the next two years are preparing for. Criterion coaching for a student leaving the programme in nine months is a different investment from coaching one with two MYP years remaining.

  4. 04

Free trial producing a target criterion

One trial lesson per student, no card required, ending with a criterion profile and a named target. You keep that document whether or not you continue, and it is useful to any MYP tutor you engage, including one you find elsewhere.

  5. 05

Check against the school's next assessed piece

The measure is the criterion mark on the next real task, not a practice score. If the targeted criterion moves, continue. If it does not, the diagnosis or the practice format was wrong, and we change the plan in week four rather than defending it in week twelve.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-led, not topic-led

MYP work is marked against four published criteria per subject group. We target the criterion costing the grade, because content teaching with no criterion work is the most common reason good sessions leave a grade exactly where it was.

The profile read across subjects

A criterion failing in three subject groups is one skill gap appearing three times. Reading the profiles side by side is how that becomes visible, and it turns three separate tutoring decisions into one block of work.

Personal Project coached at the planning stage

The grade rests heavily on documented process. We work on goal feasibility, success criteria and the journal habit in the first sessions, because none of that can be reconstructed once the project is finished.

An honest view of the route at 16

MYP to Year 11 and IGCSE from Year 10 prepare students well for different things and leave different gaps. We set that out rather than recommending whichever route happens to generate more tutoring.

Transition work scheduled before habits set

MYP students entering the Diploma usually need timed procedural work and command-term discipline. Both are cheap in September and expensive in March, which is why we propose them before the first mock rather than after it.

No guarantees and no invented statistics

We publish no success rates, no average criterion gains and no grade promises, because none could be evidenced with n, date and method. What you get is a target criterion and a checkpoint on the school's own next assessed piece.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Emaar Beachfront: your questions answered

What does an MYP grade of 5 actually mean for my child in Emaar Beachfront?+

It means the four criterion marks behind it, converted by your school's own boundary table. Each criterion is scored from zero to eight, so two students with the same grade can have opposite profiles: strong content and weak communication, or the reverse. The grade is a conversion rather than a score, which is why it feels unreadable next to a percentage. Ask the school for the criterion breakdown, which is usually available on the reporting platform even when the printed report shows only the digit.

Why has my child's grade dropped when the criterion name is the same?+

Because the descriptor behind the name rises each year while the name stays still. A criterion asking a Year 7 student to communicate a method is satisfied by a clear explanation. The same criterion in Year 10 expects appropriate subject language, consistent notation and a presentation form chosen for the audience. A student who has not noticed the escalation keeps producing Year 7 work and receives a falling grade, which looks like decline and is actually a standard moving.

Which MYP criterion holds most mathematics students back?+

Investigating patterns. Students who calculate accurately satisfy knowing and understanding without difficulty and then stall, because generalising a pattern and justifying the generalisation is a different skill that no amount of additional calculation practice develops. A student stuck at a five in mathematics with strong arithmetic almost always has a low criterion B, and the work that moves it is pattern tasks with explicit generalisation rather than more exercises.

Should our school have switched to IGCSE after Year 9?+

Both routes prepare students well for different things. Continuing the MYP builds investigation, extended writing and reflection, which makes the Diploma core feel familiar. Switching to IGCSE builds procedural speed, mark-scheme literacy and exam stamina, which makes Diploma written papers feel familiar. Neither is a disadvantage and each leaves a predictable gap. Where it matters most is portability: an IGCSE grade in a named subject travels between school systems more legibly than a criterion profile does.

How is the Personal Project marked?+

On its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a substantial share of the grade resting on evidence the student generates while working rather than on the finished product. The process journal is assessed material, not a diary. Students who build something impressive and then write about it discover that the criteria wanted a documented record of decisions and setbacks which no longer exists. The journal habit is worth more than polish on the final report.

How early should Personal Project coaching begin in MYP 5?+

Most usefully at the very beginning. A tutor can test whether the goal is achievable in the time available, whether the student can access what the project needs, and whether credible success criteria can be stated, and can establish the journal habit of short dated entries recording decisions and reasons. A tutor may not choose the project, do any of the work, write the report or produce journal entries. The project is explicitly the student's own and the school supervises it.

Why did a good subject tutor not move my child's MYP grade?+

Because the missing marks were probably in a criterion the sessions never addressed. Diploma content is public and examined externally, so a strong graduate can teach it credibly from the subject guide. MYP assessment depends on criterion descriptors applied with judgement, and that comes from having marked against them. A tutor who teaches topics well and has never read a band descriptor improves content knowledge and leaves the criterion profile untouched, which is exactly what you observed.

What should I ask a prospective MYP tutor?+

Two questions. Which four criteria does this subject group use, and which one do you think is costing my child marks? A tutor working in the right system can name the criteria and will ask to see the breakdown before answering the second question. A tutor who answers in terms of topics and chapters has not registered that the topics are not what is being marked. The answers to those two questions tell you more than any amount of qualification listing.

My child is moving into DP1 from MYP 5. What should we do first?+

Timed procedural work, starting in September rather than after the first mock. MYP students generally arrive strong on investigation and extended writing, which makes the Diploma core feel familiar, and short on producing correct answers quickly under exam conditions, because criterion assessment rewarded a justified approach developed over time. Add two or three sessions on Diploma command terms, which do not map onto MYP criterion language and quietly cap answers until someone explains them.

Is a low criterion in several subjects three problems or one?+

Almost always one. A student weak on communicating in mathematics, organising in language and literature, and processing and evaluating in sciences has a single gap in structuring and justifying written work, appearing three times. Treating it as three subject problems means three tutors and three times the cost for the same repair. Reading the criterion profiles side by side is what makes this visible, and it is the reason we ask for all of them rather than one.

How long should an MYP project session be from this peninsula?+

Ninety minutes, which on a weekday from Emaar Beachfront means a 17:30 start at the earliest and in practice usually a weekend morning. Project work needs continuity: a student who has to stop fifteen minutes after loading their materials achieves very little. Subject criterion work runs well in sixty minutes on a weekday slot. Splitting the two across the week rather than alternating within one session is what makes both productive.

Does the MYP have external examinations in Year 11?+

Optionally, and it depends on your school. Some schools enter MYP 5 students for the IB's optional external assessment leading to the MYP certificate, and others award school-based grades only. Ask which applies, because it changes what the final year is preparing for and whether examination technique needs any attention at all. A student with no external assessment ahead of them should be spending that time on criterion work and the Personal Project instead.

Are language acquisition phases the same as year groups?+

No, and conflating them is a common source of mismatched support. Students are placed in a phase based on prior exposure to the language, so a Year 9 student may sit in a lower or higher phase than their classmates, and may even be at different phases across the four skill criteria of listening, reading, speaking and writing. Support must be matched to the phase the school has placed them in, which is a question for the language teacher rather than a guess from the year group.

What should the first month of MYP support produce?+

A criterion profile and a named target criterion from session one, then two pieces of work shaped like the real task rather than practice questions: an investigation with a genuine generalisation, a response with a deliberate structure, an evaluation naming specific limitations of the student's own method. The checkpoint is the school's next assessed piece in that subject, read against the targeted criterion. If the criterion mark does not move, the plan changes rather than continuing.

Send the criterion breakdown, not just the grade

The MYP grade on a report is a conversion of four criterion marks, and the criterion marks are the part you can act on. Send the year group, the subject groups you are concerned about, the criterion breakdown if your school publishes it, whether the school continues the programme to Year 11 or switches to IGCSE, and the hours that genuinely exist after the run back to the peninsula. We will match a tutor who works criterion by criterion and open with a profile and a named target. One free trial lesson per student, no card required.
