IB Maths Tutor in Emaar Beachfront

An IB maths tutor in Emaar Beachfront should be able to tell you, within one session, which of five syllabus topics is costing your child marks and whether the loss is content, method or calculator discipline. This page sets out that diagnosis so you can ask for it. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student writing on a shared page the tutor annotates as the working appears.

  • Separate specialists for Analysis and Approaches and Applications
  • Five syllabus topics diagnosed individually, not as one subject

IB & IGCSE in Emaar Beachfront

Five topics, three papers, one exploration: what a maths tutor should be reading

IB mathematics is organised into five syllabus topics in both courses: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. A student sitting at a 4 is almost never weak across all five. They are usually secure in two, workable in two, and carrying one topic that collapses under exam conditions. A tutor's first job is to identify which, because the fix for a calculus gap and the fix for a statistics gap share nothing except the hour they occupy.

The second thing to read is the paper. Analysis and Approaches sits one paper without a calculator, which is a different examination from the one with it: algebraic manipulation has nowhere to hide, and a student who has been getting by on the graphic display calculator finds out in that paper. Applications and Interpretation permits technology throughout, which moves the difficulty from manipulation to model choice and justification. Higher Level in both courses adds a third paper of extended problem solving or extended modelling, and that paper rewards stamina and structure rather than recall.

Then there is the exploration, which carries roughly a fifth of the grade and is the component a student has most control over. It is also where the most predictable marks are thrown away: a well-presented piece built on a question whose mathematics is trivial optimises the smallest criterion and sacrifices the largest. That decision is made in the first two sessions of the project or not at all, which is why exploration coaching has to start at the question stage rather than at the draft stage.

Emaar Beachfront's practical situation shapes when any of this can happen. The peninsula is reached by one road link off King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, there is no school and no tuition centre inside it, and visitor access to tower basements requires a resident. Children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30. Mathematics needs a student who can concentrate, which on a weekday means 17:00 at the earliest. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits exist only in our India service.

What follows is the subject detail a maths tutor should already have: each topic with its characteristic error, the demands of each paper, what the calculator must do and what it conceals, how to choose an exploration question that contains real mathematics, the step up from MYP or IGCSE into DP mathematics, and the AA against AI decision in the context of universities in the UAE and abroad. Confirm current weightings and requirements with your school and with the universities themselves; the IB revises subject guides on a cycle and admissions requirements change annually.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics is the subject where the IB stages differ most sharply, because each one assesses a different thing. A tutor working at the wrong stage prepares the student for an examination they are not sitting.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

No external assessment. The transferable skill is explaining a method aloud, because every later stage marks communication as well as correctness. A child who reaches correct answers by a route they cannot describe will meet that gap in MYP Criterion C and again in a Diploma mark scheme that awards method marks for visible working.

Primary children from the Beachfront towers leave before 07:00 for schools in Al Sufouh or Al Barsha. A focused twenty-five minutes at 17:00 beats an hour attempted earlier, and mathematics in particular degrades fast with fatigue.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

Four criteria marked 0-8, covering knowledge and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Students who can calculate but cannot generalise a pattern or justify a model plateau in the middle bands. That plateau predicts difficulty in DP almost exactly.

Where a school runs MYP to Year 9 and then switches to IGCSE, the criteria stop applying at 14 and the student meets a tiered written examination instead. Confirm the pathway before planning criterion-specific work.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Standard or Higher Level, assessed through written papers plus the exploration. One course is compulsory for the Diploma, which means every DP student is sitting a mathematics examination whether or not mathematics is their strength.

UAE schools sit the May session. Internal exploration deadlines fall well ahead of it, usually in DP1 or early DP2. No IB date in this project was confirmed from the IB itself, so check every one with your coordinator.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme mathematics

Where a CP student takes a DP mathematics course as one of their Diploma subjects, it is marked to full DP standards and the tutoring is identical. Where mathematics appears only through the career-related study, the demands are applied and numerical rather than examined in the DP format.

CP provision across Dubai is narrow, so this is one of the few decisions in which the family's address genuinely changes the available options rather than just the commute.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the mathematics strands and adjacent subjects we are asked for most from this cluster. Each description names what the strand assesses and the error that characterises it.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, HL and SL

Sequences, series, exponents, logarithms, binomial expansion and, at HL, complex numbers and proof. The characteristic error is index and logarithm manipulation done by half-remembered rule rather than from definition, which fails the moment the expression is unfamiliar.

Functions

AA and AI, HL and SL

Domain and range, transformations, composite and inverse functions, and modelling with standard families. Students lose marks by transforming a graph in the wrong order and by giving a range without checking what the domain permits.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, HL and SL

Triangle and circle work, radians, identities, and at HL vectors and three-dimensional geometry. The usual loss is a diagram drawn carelessly or not at all, after which every subsequent step is correct arithmetic applied to the wrong configuration.

Statistics and probability

AA and AI, HL and SL

Distributions, correlation, hypothesis testing in AI, and conditional probability throughout. Marks go on stating the distribution and its parameters, and on interpreting a result in context rather than reporting a number the calculator produced.

Calculus

AA and AI, HL and SL

Differentiation, integration and their applications, with substantial HL extension in AA. The commonest failure is technique chosen by pattern recognition: a student who identifies integration by substitution by how the question looks cannot handle a disguised one.

Mathematical exploration

AA and AI, HL and SL

An individual piece of mathematical writing carrying about a fifth of the grade, marked on lettered criteria. The largest allocation goes to the mathematics itself, which is why question choice matters more than presentation and has to be settled first.

Higher Level Paper 3

HL only

Extended problem solving in AA and extended modelling in AI, built as a structured investigation rather than a set of separate questions. It rewards reading the whole question before starting and carrying a result forward, both of which are practised rather than known.

Physics

HL and SL

Frequently paired with AA HL and often the subject where a mathematics weakness surfaces first. Algebraic rearrangement under time pressure, logarithmic graphing and uncertainty arithmetic are shared ground, and a session on one subject often helps the other.

Economics

HL and SL

HL policy calculation and elasticity work rest on the same proportional reasoning as the mathematics course. Students strong in AI often outperform their classmates here, and students weak in proportional reasoning struggle in both subjects at once.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Mathematics is among the most productive areas of knowledge for a TOK essay because the questions about proof, certainty and applicability are genuinely open. A mathematics tutor can help a student find examples that work rather than examples that sound impressive.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mathematics tutoring works when the tutor watches the working appear. These three arrangements all do that and they serve different problems.

Weekly topic work with one specialist

A fixed weekly slot with a tutor who teaches that course at that level. The session opens on the topic diagnosed as weakest, the student works problems live on a shared page, and the tutor intervenes at the line where the error happens rather than after the answer. The page is retained, so revision later happens from the student's own corrected working.

  • One course, one level, one specialist
  • Intervention at the line, not after the answer
  • Topic order set by the diagnosis, not by the textbook
  • Corrected working retained for revision

Calculator-free fluency block

Short, frequent sessions aimed only at the Analysis and Approaches paper sat without technology. Index laws, logarithm manipulation, exact trigonometric values, algebraic fractions and differentiation by rule, drilled until they are automatic. Dull, measurable, and the fastest grade movement available to an AA student who has been leaning on the calculator.

  • Only the skills the calculator-free paper exposes
  • Drilled to automatic rather than understood once
  • Progress measured in time per question
  • Runs alongside topic work rather than replacing it

Exploration coaching from the question stage

Sessions mapped to the lettered criteria, beginning before a question exists. The tutor tests whether a candidate question contains enough mathematics to reach the top band, whether data can actually be obtained, and whether the scope fits. Feedback is given on the student's own drafts; the writing is entirely theirs.

  • Question tested for mathematical depth before any writing
  • Data collection method checked for defensibility
  • Criteria named by letter with their allocations
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a rewrite

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Emaar Beachfront

01

Diagnosing a maths grade topic by topic

Ask a maths tutor what is wrong and a weak answer is "algebra" or "confidence". A useful answer names a topic and an error type. The five syllabus areas fail in characteristic ways, and the failures are recognisable from a marked script in minutes. Number and algebra fails through index and logarithm rules applied by half-memory. Functions fails through transformation order. Geometry fails through a careless or absent diagram. Statistics fails through reporting a calculator output without naming the distribution. Calculus fails through technique chosen by how the question looks rather than by what it is.

Each of those takes a different amount of time to fix. A transformation-order problem is two sessions because it is a procedure. A pattern-recognition approach to integration is a term, because the student has to rebuild how they decide, and rebuilding a decision habit is slower than learning a rule. Any tutor who quotes a session count before reading a script is quoting a package. Any tutor who reads a script and cannot name the topic and the error type is not diagnosing, and the sessions that follow will be general revision at a specialist price.

The practical request to make is simple. Send the most recent marked paper and ask for the lost marks sorted by topic and by error type, with an estimate for each. You will get a short table, and the table tells you where the next ten weeks should go. It also tells you which marks are not worth chasing: a student eight weeks from a paper with one unsecured HL topic and widespread method problems should fix the method and leave the topic, because method pays across every question and the topic pays on two.

02

What each paper actually demands

The papers are not three samples of the same examination. In Analysis and Approaches the paper sat without a calculator tests whether algebraic manipulation is automatic, and it is unforgiving: a student who can do the manipulation slowly runs out of time rather than out of knowledge. The paper with technology permitted shifts the demand to problem setup, because the computation is no longer the obstacle. In Applications and Interpretation both papers permit technology, so the demand sits almost entirely in choosing and justifying a model.

Higher Level adds a third paper in both courses, and it behaves differently from the others. It is a structured extended investigation rather than a sequence of independent questions, which means a result established in part (b) is needed in part (f), and a student who abandons a part breaks the chain. Reading the entire paper before writing anything is the single most valuable habit for it. So is writing down intermediate results clearly enough to use them twenty minutes later, which sounds trivial and is where a great deal of this paper is lost.

Preparation therefore has to be paper-specific rather than topic-general. A student who is weak on the calculator-free paper needs fluency drills, not more topic teaching. A student weak on Paper 3 needs whole extended investigations under timing, not problem sets. A student weak on the technology-permitted paper usually needs work on reading a question and deciding what kind of problem it is. Those are three different blocks of work, and lumping them together as "maths tutoring" is how a term disappears without a grade moving.

03

The graphic display calculator: what it must do and what it hides

  • Operation speed converts into marks by freeing time for harder questions
  • A calculator hides weak algebra until the paper that forbids it
  • AA students need a separate calculator-free fluency block with a time target
  • AI students still need to interpret output rather than report it

A student who cannot drive their calculator fluently loses marks they have earned. Solving an equation graphically, finding an intersection, running a regression, evaluating a definite integral and reading a distribution all have to be fast and reliable, because the time saved is time available for the questions that need thinking. Families underestimate how much of a mark difference pure operation makes, particularly in Applications and Interpretation where the technology is assumed in every paper.

The opposite problem is more dangerous. A calculator conceals weak algebra completely until the moment a paper takes it away. An Analysis and Approaches student can pass internal assessments all through DP1 by graphing their way to answers, and then meet the calculator-free paper with no fluency at all. This is the commonest cause of a sharp drop between school reports and mock results in AA, and it is entirely predictable: the school's tests permitted technology and the mock did not.

The remedy is to separate the two skills and train both. Calculator operation is drilled until it is automatic, with a short list of procedures the student can execute without hunting through menus. Calculator-free fluency is drilled separately, with a time target per question, because the standard is speed rather than eventual success. Running them in the same session confuses the diagnosis; running them in alternate sessions across a term fixes both. For AI students the second block is lighter, but reading output critically still has to be taught.

04

Choosing an exploration question that contains real mathematics

  • The largest criterion allocation goes to the mathematics, not the presentation
  • A question needing one standard method cannot reach the upper bands
  • Check the data can be obtained before fixing the question
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only; invented data is a malpractice risk

The exploration is marked on lettered criteria and the largest allocation goes to the mathematics used. That single fact decides the project. A beautifully written, carefully formatted exploration about something personally interesting, whose mathematics amounts to plotting a line of best fit, has optimised presentation and sacrificed the component that mattered most. Students arrive at this outcome honestly, because the instruction they hear is to pick something they care about, and nobody tells them the mathematics has to be hard enough to be worth marking.

The test to apply at the question stage is whether the question requires mathematics the student has not already fully mastered, and whether it requires more than one technique. A question answered by a single application of a standard method cannot reach the upper bands however well it is written. A question requiring the student to select between approaches, justify the selection, and then reflect on what the result does and does not show, can. Finding such a question takes two sessions of discussion and saves a month of writing in the wrong direction.

Data is the second trap, particularly in Applications and Interpretation. A question requiring data the student cannot actually obtain produces either invented numbers, which is an academic-honesty problem, or a change of direction three weeks in. Checking the data source before the question is fixed is unglamorous and prevents most exploration disasters. Throughout, the tutor's role is to question and to give feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor who supplies text, structures the piece as prose, or selects and writes up the data has crossed a line the IB treats as malpractice.

05

The step from MYP or IGCSE into DP mathematics

Two groups of students arrive in DP1 mathematics and they arrive with different gaps. Students coming from the Middle Years Programme have usually met investigation, pattern generalisation and real-life modelling, and are comfortable writing about mathematics. What they often lack is procedural speed: criterion-based marking rewarded a justified approach, and the Diploma papers reward a correct answer produced quickly. Students coming from IGCSE have usually drilled procedure heavily and are fast and accurate, and what they lack is the habit of justifying a choice or interpreting a result in context.

Both gaps are predictable and both are cheap to close in the first term of DP1, which is exactly when nobody addresses them because the reports still look fine. The MYP student needs timed procedural work. The IGCSE student needs to practise writing the sentence that says what the answer means. By the time a mock exposes either gap, a year of habit has reinforced it, and the student concludes they are bad at the course rather than missing one skill.

There is a third group in this cluster: students arriving mid-course from another country and another system, which is common in Emaar Beachfront and Dubai Harbour given how recently both filled. For them the diagnosis has to be done properly rather than assumed, because the gaps depend on what their previous system emphasised. The useful first step is a single diagnostic session on a mixed problem set spanning all five topics, which produces a clearer picture than any school transcript will.

AA or AI, and what universities in the UAE and abroad expect

The route decision is made before DP1 and is difficult to reverse once teaching groups are set. The academic test is how a student thinks: Analysis and Approaches suits a student who enjoys manipulation, abstraction and proof, while Applications and Interpretation suits a student who reasons well about data and context and finds abstract manipulation punishing. Picking AA because it sounds more rigorous, against a student's actual aptitude, produces a lower grade in a course the university did not require.

The admissions test is separate and it has to be researched rather than assumed. Some engineering, physical sciences, mathematics and quantitative economics programmes specify Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or treat it as strongly preferred. Many others accept either course. Institutions in the UAE publish their own entry requirements, and so do universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia where families in this cluster commonly apply. Those requirements change annually and are programme-specific, not institution-wide.

The only reliable method is therefore to read the current requirement on the university's own admissions page, for the exact programme, before the subject choice is locked. Do it in Year 11, write down what each target programme says, and make the choice against that list rather than against general advice. A tutor can help interpret what a requirement means in practice and can tell you whether a student is realistically placed to take AA at Higher Level, which is a different and more useful question than whether AA is better.

What a maths session should look like from week one

  • The student writes; the tutor intervenes at the line, not after the answer
  • Six targeted problems beat thirty general ones
  • Fortnightly timed work, self-marked, tutor-audited
  • Narrow, then whole papers, then narrow again on what the paper exposed

A good mathematics session is mostly the student working. The tutor sets a problem, watches the working appear line by line on a shared page, and intervenes at the point where the error occurs rather than at the end. That timing is the whole technique: a correction delivered after a wrong answer teaches the correct answer, while a correction delivered at the line where the reasoning slipped teaches the student to notice it themselves next time. A session in which the tutor talks for forty minutes and the student watches is a lecture, and lectures are available free.

The session should end with something specific to do, and it should be small. Six well-chosen problems that attack the diagnosed weakness beat thirty that revisit what the student can already do. The next session opens by checking them, which is how the diagnosis stays honest: a student who could not do the six has a deeper gap than the one that was diagnosed, and that is useful information rather than a failure.

Across a term the pattern is diagnose, narrow, broaden. Narrow work on the weakest topic and the dominant error type, then whole papers under timing, then a return to narrow work on whatever the paper exposed. Every fortnight the student should sit something timed and mark it strictly themselves, with the tutor auditing the marking. When the gap between predicted and actual marks closes, the examiner's logic has been internalised, and that is the point at which broad revision starts paying.

Booking an IB maths specialist from Emaar Beachfront

  • Send the course, the level, a marked paper and the free hours
  • Say if the exploration or the calculator-free paper is the real issue
  • Free trial producing a topic-and-error breakdown with session estimates
  • HL maths at popular hours is scarce; we name the gap rather than substitute

Send the course and level, the most recent marked paper, and the hours that genuinely exist after the school run. We match a tutor who teaches that course at that level and propose a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, and the trial produces a topic-and-error breakdown with a session estimate rather than a sales conversation. You keep that breakdown whether or not you continue with us.

If the exploration is the live issue, say so at the start, because the work and the timing are different. Exploration coaching should begin before a question is chosen and should be scheduled against the school's internal deadline rather than weekly in perpetuity. If the calculator-free paper is the live issue, that is a fluency block with a time target, and it runs alongside topic work rather than instead of it. Naming the problem gets you the right block in week one.

The limits. We cannot promise a grade, and nobody who has marked a mathematics paper would. Higher Level mathematics specialists at the most popular evening hours are the scarcest category we match, and when nobody is free we will say so and offer a different slot or a short block rather than substituting a tutor who teaches the other course. And an hour a week can direct the student's other six hours; it cannot replace them. Mathematics is the subject where that is least negotiable.

Where we tutor

Where this cluster's maths students live and study

Mathematics sessions are the most sensitive to timing of any subject, because tired students make arithmetic errors that look like misunderstanding. This is what each nearby community does to the clock.

Emaar Beachfront

Towers on a reclaimed peninsula with one road link and no school inside it. A bus departure before 07:00 and a return after 15:30 make 17:00 the practical floor for a session that involves calculus.

Dubai Harbour

Adjacent, built around the cruise terminal and marina berths, sharing the same access corridor. Cruise-call days add afternoon unpredictability, which is why families here favour a slot that can move rather than one that cannot.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served, with more travelling tutors available. Higher Level mathematics specialists remain scarce there, which is the local evidence that proximity does not determine who can teach Paper 3.

JBR

Long settled, with the cluster's most mature independent tutoring market. Families still report difficulty finding someone who will work through a calculator-free paper line by line rather than explain the topic again.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most of this cluster's Diploma teaching happens. Mock windows along this corridor fall in the same fortnight, which concentrates demand for diagnostic mathematics work into a few weeks of the year.

The Meadows and The Springs

Villa communities inland of the Marina with established school provision. The commute is longer and more predictable, which makes an earlier weekday slot workable in a way it is not from the peninsula.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course and the level

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. These are four different examinations and we match tutors to one of them rather than to mathematics in general. If the school has not finalised the route, that conversation is itself worth a session in Year 11.

  2. 02

    Send a marked paper

The most recent marked assessment, ideally with the mark scheme the school used. It converts the first session from a discussion into a diagnosis: lost marks sorted by topic and by error type, with an honest estimate of how long each takes to repair and which are worth chasing before the next paper.

  3. 03

Pick a slot the student can think in

17:00 or later on a weekday from this peninsula, and weekend mornings for exploration work, which needs ninety uninterrupted minutes. Mathematics degrades faster with fatigue than any other subject, and a session scheduled at the wrong hour produces errors that look like misunderstanding.

  4. 04

Free trial with a written breakdown

One trial lesson per student, no card required. It ends with the topic-and-error table and a session estimate per item. That document is yours regardless of what you decide next, and it is useful to any mathematics tutor you hire, including one you find elsewhere.

  5. 05

    Audit every fortnight

A timed component sat, self-marked strictly against the scheme, then audited by the tutor. The measure is the gap between predicted and actual marks. While it stays open the work remains narrow and targeted; once it closes, broad revision starts to pay and the session pattern changes accordingly.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One course, one level, one specialist

AA HL and AI SL reward different habits and a tutor who teaches both tends to coach the one they prefer. We match to a single course and level, which is why the first session can diagnose rather than explore.

Diagnosis by topic and error type

The trial lesson produces a table of lost marks sorted across the five syllabus topics and by error type, with repair estimates. That is the document that determines the plan, and families keep it whether or not they continue.

Calculator-free fluency treated as its own skill

The AA paper without technology exposes algebra a calculator has been concealing all year. We train that separately, with a time target per question, because the standard is speed rather than eventual success.

Exploration coached from the question, not the draft

The largest criterion allocation goes to the mathematics used, so the question is the decision. We test depth and data availability before anything is written, and we give feedback on the student's own drafts only.

Route advice that points at the university's own page

Whether a programme requires AA at Higher Level is set by the receiving institution and changes annually. We help interpret the requirement and we tell you to read the current one on the university's own admissions page.

No grade promises and no invented statistics

We publish no success rates, no average score claims and no guarantees, because none of them could be evidenced with n, date and method. What we will give you is an honest session estimate and a fortnightly measure of whether it is working.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Emaar Beachfront: your questions answered

How do I know whether my child needs AA or AI support in Emaar Beachfront?+

Start from which course they are actually in, which the school decides and usually finalises in Year 11. If the route is still open, the academic question is how the student thinks: Analysis and Approaches rewards manipulation, abstraction and proof, while Applications and Interpretation rewards data reasoning and interpretation in context. The admissions question is separate and specific, so read the current requirement on each target university's own admissions page for the named programme before the choice is locked rather than after.

Which of the five maths topics causes most trouble for Diploma students here?+

Calculus, but not for the reason families expect. The problem is rarely the rules of differentiation or integration; it is technique selection. A student who decides how to integrate by how the question looks can handle every example they have seen and fails on a disguised one, because they are pattern matching rather than reading structure. That is a decision habit rather than a knowledge gap, so it takes a term to rebuild rather than three sessions, and it is worth starting early in DP1.

My child does well in school tests and badly in mocks. Why?+

In Analysis and Approaches this is usually the calculator. School assessments often permit technology and the paper that matters most does not, so a student can graph their way to correct answers all through DP1 with no algebraic fluency underneath. The mock removes the calculator and the gap appears in one sitting. The fix is a separate fluency block with a time target per question, run alongside topic work, and it produces visible movement within a few weeks because the skill is mechanical.

How much of the maths grade does the exploration carry?+

Roughly a fifth, and it is the component the student controls most. The lettered criteria put the largest allocation on the mathematics used, which means a carefully presented exploration built on a trivial question has optimised the smallest criterion. The decision that matters is the question, settled in the first two sessions before anything is written. Confirm the current weighting and criteria with your child's teacher, since the IB revises subject guides on a cycle and a tutoring page is not the source of truth for a percentage.

What should a Higher Level student do about Paper 3 specifically?+

Practise whole investigations under timing rather than problem sets. The third paper is a structured extended investigation, so a result established early is needed later, and a student who abandons one part breaks the chain for several that follow. Two habits carry most of the available marks: reading the entire paper before writing anything, and recording intermediate results clearly enough to use them twenty minutes later. Both sound trivial and both are where a great deal of this paper is lost.

Can a tutor help with the exploration without crossing the IB's honesty rules?+

Yes, and the boundary is clear. A tutor may test whether a question contains enough mathematics, check that the data can actually be obtained, explain what each lettered criterion requires, question the reasoning, and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not supply text, structure the piece as prose for submission, or select and write up the data. Invented data is a malpractice problem in itself. Our tutors work on the first list and decline the second directly.

Is it worth starting maths support in DP1 rather than waiting?+

Yes, and the first term of DP1 is the cheapest point in the whole course. Students arriving from the Middle Years Programme are usually missing procedural speed; students arriving from IGCSE are usually missing the habit of justifying a method and interpreting a result. Both gaps are small in September and both are entrenched by the first mock, because the reports in between look acceptable. Closing one of them early costs a handful of sessions rather than a term of rescue work.

How good does calculator operation need to be?+

Automatic. Solving graphically, finding intersections, running a regression, evaluating a definite integral and reading a distribution should all happen without hunting through menus, because the time saved goes to the questions that need thinking. In Applications and Interpretation this matters in every paper. Families consistently underestimate how many marks pure operation speed is worth, and it is one of the few things in mathematics that can be drilled to a reliable standard inside a fortnight.

We arrived mid-course from another country. Where do we start?+

With one diagnostic session across all five syllabus topics rather than with assumptions. Both Emaar Beachfront and Dubai Harbour filled recently, so mid-course arrivals are common here, and what a student is missing depends entirely on what their previous system emphasised. A transcript will not tell you; a mixed problem set will. From that session you get a topic-and-error table, and the plan starts from the two items on it that cost the most marks per hour of work.

What does a maths session actually look like over video?+

Mostly the student working. The tutor sets a problem, watches the working appear line by line on a shared page, and intervenes at the point where the reasoning slips rather than after the wrong answer arrives. That timing is the technique: a correction at the line teaches the student to notice it themselves, while a correction at the end teaches only the right answer. The page is retained, so later revision happens from the student's own corrected working rather than a textbook.

How many sessions will it take to move a grade?+

It depends entirely on the error type, which is why we ask for a marked paper before answering. A transformation-order problem is two sessions because it is a procedure. A calculator-free fluency gap is a few weeks of short, frequent drilling. A pattern-matching approach to integration is a term, because a decision habit has to be rebuilt. Any tutor who quotes a number before reading a script is quoting a package rather than an estimate, and the number will be the one that suits them.

Does Physics Higher Level depend on the maths course chosen?+

Not formally, but in practice the overlap is substantial. Algebraic rearrangement under time pressure, logarithmic graphing and uncertainty arithmetic are shared ground, so a student struggling with Physics calculations often has a mathematics problem rather than a physics problem. Analysis and Approaches students generally find the Physics algebra less punishing. If both subjects are weak, diagnose the mathematics first: fixing it usually moves both grades, while fixing physics content moves one.

Should we book one person for both Maths AA HL and Physics HL?+

Sometimes, and only where that person genuinely teaches both at the required level. The overlap is real, so a tutor who teaches Maths AA HL and Physics HL to a Diploma standard is a legitimate single appointment. What does not work is a mathematics tutor taking physics because the family asked, or the reverse. Ask directly which components of each subject the tutor has taught at that level, and expect two names if the answer is vague.

What time should a maths session run from a Beachfront tower?+

17:00 at the earliest on a weekday, 17:30 if the bus from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh runs late. Mathematics degrades faster with fatigue than any other subject: a tired student produces arithmetic slips that look like conceptual misunderstanding and get diagnosed as such. Weekend mornings are where we schedule exploration work, because a criterion-mapped session needs ninety uninterrupted minutes. Choosing the hour honestly is worth more than choosing the tutor carelessly and hoping the hour works.

Send a marked paper and we will name the topic

An IB mathematics problem has a location: one of five syllabus topics, one error type, one paper. Send the course and level, the most recent marked assessment, and the hours that genuinely exist after the school run from the peninsula. We will match a tutor who teaches that course at that level, propose a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, and open with a written table of lost marks by topic and error type with an honest estimate against each. One free trial lesson per student, no card required.
