IB Home Tutor in Al Safa

Parents searching for an IB home tutor in Al Safa are usually trying to solve a specific problem in a specific subject, and the Diploma makes that hard to see. This page works from the assessment up: which paper carries what weight, which criterion letters the Internal Assessment is marked against, and how six subject grades plus three core points become a score out of 45. Al Safa lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Safa

The Diploma is six subjects and eleven or twelve separate assessments

A parent in Al Safa searching for an IB home tutor normally has one sentence of diagnosis to work from: the school says Chemistry is a concern, or Maths has slipped. The Diploma does not work at that resolution. Each subject is assessed by two or three written papers plus an Internal Assessment, each component carries its own percentage of the final grade, and each is marked by different criteria. A student can be comfortable on Paper 1 and losing a grade on Paper 2, and the report card will say the same thing either way.

So the first job of a useful IB tutor is subtraction. Which component is actually costing marks? Before any teaching happens, that question has a cheap answer: look at the mock breakdown by paper. If the school does not provide one, ask for it. A Diploma mock paper set is three to four separate scripts in most subjects, and the component-level numbers tell you more than the aggregate grade does. Almost every plan we write for an Al Safa family starts there.

The second job is the Internal Assessment, which is where the marks are most predictably available and most commonly neglected. Each IA is marked against lettered criteria with explicit mark allocations: in the sciences the scientific investigation carries 24 marks across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation; in mathematics the exploration carries 20 marks across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Those are published numbers. A student who has read them and written to them does better than a student who wrote a good piece of work and hoped.

Third comes the core, which decides up to three points of the final 45. The Extended Essay is marked against five criteria totalling 34 marks, with a 4,000-word maximum, and Theory of Knowledge contributes an essay and an exhibition. Al Safa families routinely underweight this: three points is the difference between a conditional offer met and missed, and it sits in two pieces of work that are supervised rather than taught, which means nobody is chasing the student weekly.

On how we deliver, say it plainly. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we offer only in India, and the in-home market in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour by other providers if that is the format a family wants. Our Al Safa tuition is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and the mark scheme on a shared screen. On component-level work that is the right tool, because both people need to be looking at the same question.

The pages beside this one in Al Safa take other routes: the maths, physics and chemistry pages go deeper into single subjects, and the IGCSE pages cover the years before this one. This page is the architecture of the Diploma, because that is the part Al Safa parents are most often working without.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Safa households meet the IB at different points, and the three stages need genuinely different help. Naming the stage before booking saves both money and a term of mismatched sessions.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard, graded 1 to 7 for a subject maximum of 42, plus up to 3 points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combined, giving 45. Each subject carries written papers and an Internal Assessment, and the component weightings differ by level. Most of our Al Safa work sits here, and most of it is component-specific rather than subject-wide.

Several Al Safa schools run A Level rather than the Diploma after IGCSE, so a family wanting the DP sometimes moves a child at sixteen. A student arriving in DP1 from a different school and a different curriculum carries two adjustments at once, and the first term is where that shows.

CPAges 16-19

IB Career-related Programme and course candidates

Not every student in an IB school takes the full Diploma. Course candidates take individual subjects and receive certificates rather than the Diploma, and the Career-related Programme combines DP courses with career-related study. The assessment for the individual subjects is identical, so the tutoring is the same work, but the pressure profile is different because there is no 45-point total and no core requirement.

In Al Safa this comes up most where a student has moved from a British school mid-sixth-form, or where a school advises against the full Diploma after a difficult DP1. The subject papers and the IA still need the same component-level preparation, and that is what we work on.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme, the run-up

Five years assessed against four lettered criteria per subject, each marked out of 8, with no percentages and no terminal examinations except through optional eAssessment. The skills it builds are inquiry, documentation and reflection. The skills the Diploma then assumes are recall under time pressure and technical fluency, which is why the transition catches strong MYP students out.

Al Safa has both continuum IB schools and British-curriculum schools, so some students reach DP1 from MYP 5 and others from IGCSE. The two arrive with opposite strengths, and a tutor who does not ask which route a student came by will misdiagnose the first term.

MOEAll year groups in Dubai private schools

Mandatory UAE subjects alongside the Diploma

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and these subjects sit alongside the six Diploma subjects rather than replacing any of them.

For an Al Safa Diploma student this is the reason the week has less slack than the IB subject count suggests. Six subjects plus the core plus mandatory subjects is a full timetable, and tutoring has to fit a smaller evening window than a UK-based plan would assume.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Al Safa families ask for most, named with the component that usually carries the loss. The point of this list is to help you say something more specific than the subject name when you enquire.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At SL the two papers carry the bulk of the grade with the exploration at 20%; at HL a third paper adds extended problem-solving. Marks are lost on algebraic manipulation under time pressure and on the non-calculator paper, where fluency rather than understanding is what is being tested.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology-rich and modelling-led, with statistics carrying real weight. Students who choose it to avoid algebra discover that the interpretation demands are high: a correct calculation with no comment on what it means scores poorly against the mark scheme.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Two written papers plus the scientific investigation at 20%. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium and energetics are the recurring difficulties, and the investigation is where the most predictable marks sit because its four criteria are published with mark allocations attached.

Physics

HL and SL

Mathematical modelling under time pressure is the real demand, not conceptual difficulty. Students who can state a law lose marks deriving from it, and the data-based questions in Paper 1 reward careful graph and uncertainty work that is rarely practised enough.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume plus command-term precision. An answer that describes when the verb asked for an explanation earns nothing, however accurate it is, and HL students routinely underestimate how much of the grade sits in extended response rather than recall.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and evaluation carry the grade. HL adds a quantitative paper that surprises students who chose the subject as an essay option, and the Internal Assessment is a set of commentaries on real published articles rather than a single piece of research.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The guided textual analysis paper rewards close reading of an unseen text under time pressure, and the comparative essay rewards planning. HL carries an additional written essay. Strong readers lose marks by narrating the text instead of analysing how a choice produces an effect.

History

HL and SL

Source evaluation on the prescribed subject paper, essay writing on the world history topics, and at HL a third regional paper. The IA is a historical investigation marked against three criteria totalling 25 marks, with source evaluation carrying a specific allocation of its own.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application and evaluation under case-study conditions. Students memorise frameworks and then apply them generically; the marks sit in applying one tool precisely to the stimulus provided, which is a technique rather than a knowledge gain.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all Diploma students

Together worth up to three points of the 45. The Extended Essay has a 4,000-word maximum and five criteria totalling 34 marks; TOK carries an essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition. Both are supervised rather than taught, which is why they are the most commonly neglected marks in the Diploma.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Diploma support divides cleanly by what is being fixed: a component, an Internal Assessment, the core, or a transition. Each has a different session length and a different rhythm.

Component-targeted weekly sessions

One 60-minute session a week aimed at the specific paper costing marks, worked from past papers and the official mark scheme. The tutor reads the mock script first, so the sessions start on the diagnosed component rather than on a survey of the syllabus.

  • Driven by the mock breakdown by paper, not by the overall grade
  • Past-paper questions and mark schemes from session one
  • Fixed weekday slot, usually from 4.30pm for Al Safa households
  • Recordings available for revision before a class assessment

Internal Assessment coaching

Fortnightly 60-minute sessions across the IA window, worked against the lettered criteria and their mark allocations. The tutor questions the research design, reads the student's own draft, and says which criterion a section currently fails. The student writes every word of it.

  • Criteria and mark allocations read together at the start
  • Research design interrogated before data collection, not after
  • Drafts reviewed against descriptors; nothing written for the student
  • Scheduled to the school's internal deadlines, not a generic timeline

Extended Essay and TOK supervision

The three core points, worked as process. For the Extended Essay that means a researchable question, a method that fits it, and five criteria totalling 34 marks held in view from the first session. For TOK it means knowledge questions and real-world examples the student actually understands.

  • Research question narrowed before any writing begins
  • The 4,000-word limit treated as a constraint on scope, not a target
  • Criterion C, critical thinking, treated as the heaviest allocation
  • Monthly or fortnightly across the window, with longer weekend slots

The DP1 landing block

Six to ten sessions in the first term for a student who has arrived in DP1 from IGCSE or MYP 5 and is finding the step up steeper than expected. The work is almost always algebraic fluency, command terms and timed written response rather than new content.

  • Diagnoses whether the problem is content, fluency or timing
  • Command-term drill against the Diploma's own verb list
  • Non-calculator practice for Mathematics Analysis and Approaches
  • Honest advice on whether a Higher Level choice should change

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Safa

01

What an IB home tutor in Al Safa is really being asked to do

  • IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE; lessons are one-to-one online
  • The in-home market exists in Dubai and is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour by others
  • What actually matters is whether the tutor can work at component and criterion level
  • Accountability comes from written diagnosis, named targets and session recordings

The phrase people search is "IB home tutor in Al Safa", and the intent behind it is almost never about the home. It is about proximity as a proxy for reliability: somebody nearby, who knows the schools here, who can be held accountable. Those are reasonable wants and they are worth answering directly rather than redirecting.

On proximity, the honest position is that IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and Al Safa tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video. The in-home market in Dubai is real and is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel by Bestimate and by independent home tutors; if a family wants somebody physically present, that market exists and this page will not pretend otherwise.

On reliability, the thing that matters is whether the tutor can work at component level. A Diploma student losing marks on Chemistry Paper 2 needs somebody who can read the mark scheme for an extended-response question and explain why a correct-sounding answer earned two of four marks. Geography has nothing to do with whether a tutor can do that, and insisting on physical presence narrows the pool to people willing to drive to Al Safa at 4.30pm on a Tuesday.

On accountability, what replaces proximity is documentation. A written diagnosis after the first session, a named component to be fixed, a halfway review against the same question types, and a session recording the parent can watch. That is more checkable than somebody sitting at a kitchen table, and it is available regardless of where the right subject specialist happens to live.

02

Component weightings: which paper is actually deciding the grade

The single most useful document a Diploma parent can obtain is the component breakdown of their child's mock results. Not the grade, the breakdown. In most subjects a Diploma mock comprises two or three written papers plus an IA mark, and the papers do not carry equal weight. A student who is five marks off a boundary may be losing all of it in one component that carries 44% of the grade, which makes the next eight weeks very easy to plan.

Weightings also differ between Higher and Standard Level in the same subject, which parents consistently find surprising. In mathematics, Standard Level is two papers plus the exploration, while Higher Level adds a third paper and redistributes the percentages. In the sciences, the exploration-equivalent investigation is 20% at both levels, but the written papers divide the remaining 80% differently from, say, History, where the IA share and the paper count both change with level.

There is one caution to attach to any table of weightings, including the one below. The IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle, and the current guide for your child's cohort is the authority. Ask the subject teacher or the Diploma coordinator which guide applies and what the component percentages are for that version, and treat anything published on a third-party page as a prompt to check rather than a fact to act on.

Used properly, the weightings change the plan in a specific way. If the heaviest paper is also the weakest, the whole block goes there. If the weakest component is the IA and the IA window is still open, that is the cheapest grade movement available in the entire Diploma, because the criteria are published and the work is not timed.

IA criterion letters and mark allocations, which nobody else publishes

Internal Assessments are marked against lettered criteria with explicit mark allocations, and those allocations are published in each subject guide. We checked the pages ranking for Dubai IB tutoring searches: not one of them names a single criterion. That is a strange gap, because the allocations tell a student exactly where to spend their effort.

Take the sciences. The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying 6 marks. A student who writes a thorough method and then a two-line conclusion has thrown away a quarter of the available marks for reasons of pacing rather than ability. Knowing the allocation is enough to prevent that, and it takes five minutes to read.

Mathematics works differently. The exploration is marked out of 20 across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, and the last of those carries the largest share. Students pick topics they find interesting but mathematically thin, score well on engagement and poorly on the heaviest criterion. The topic choice conversation, held before any work starts, is worth more than every session afterwards.

The Extended Essay follows the same logic at larger scale: five criteria totalling 34 marks, with critical thinking carrying the heaviest allocation by a wide margin. Students spend their time on knowledge and understanding, which is comfortable, and underinvest in argument, which is where the marks are. Reading the allocation table before choosing a research question changes the question a student picks.

Command terms, and why a correct answer can score nothing

  • Command terms are defined in the subject guides and group by required depth
  • State, list and identify ask for recall; analyse, evaluate and justify ask for argument
  • Writing everything known in response to a low-depth verb wastes time and gains nothing
  • Two sessions of verb drill against official mark schemes usually shifts the pattern

The most common conversation in a first Diploma tutoring session goes like this. The student has written something true and relevant and received one mark out of four. They conclude the marking is harsh. The mark scheme says otherwise: the question asked them to evaluate and they described, or it asked them to justify and they stated.

IB command terms are defined in the subject guides and grouped by the depth of thinking they require. Terms like state, list and identify ask for recall and nothing more. Describe, outline and explain ask for progressively more development. Analyse, evaluate, justify, discuss and to what extent ask for argument, weighing and judgement. A student who treats all of them as invitations to write everything they know will underperform in every paper of every subject.

This is coachable quickly, and it is the highest-return early work available. Take ten past-paper questions in the student's own subject, cover the answers, and have them say only what the verb requires before writing anything. Then mark against the official scheme. Most students see the pattern within two sessions, and the improvement shows up across subjects rather than in one.

The reason it goes untaught is that it sits between subjects. The Chemistry teacher teaches chemistry, the History teacher teaches history, and nobody owns the verb list. A tutor working with one student across their whole Diploma profile is well placed to own it, and for an Al Safa student juggling six subjects plus the core that cross-subject view is often the most valuable thing a weekly hour provides.

05

The three core points, and why Al Safa families leave them on the table

Six subjects give a maximum of 42 points. The remaining three come from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together, through a published matrix combining the grades awarded for each. Three points is a large amount in a system where university offers are set in whole numbers, and it is routinely the least prepared part of the Diploma.

The structural reason is supervision. Subjects are taught weekly by a teacher who sets work and chases it. The Extended Essay is supervised, usually with a small number of scheduled meetings across a year, and TOK sits in a thin timetable slot. A student who is managing their own time well does fine. A student who is not has no weekly mechanism catching them, and the first visible sign is a missed internal deadline.

What helps is treating both as projects with milestones rather than as essays with deadlines. For the Extended Essay that means a narrowed research question months before the first draft, a method that genuinely fits the question, and an explicit plan for criterion C, critical thinking, which carries the heaviest allocation of the 34 marks. The 4,000-word maximum is a constraint on scope, and a question too broad to answer in 4,000 words is the commonest root cause of a weak essay.

The honesty boundary here is firm and worth repeating. A tutor may teach research method, interrogate a question, explain what a criterion requires, and read a student's own draft and say where it falls short. A tutor may not write, rewrite to completion or dictate any part of an Extended Essay, TOK essay or Internal Assessment. There is at least one provider in this market selling completed Internal Assessments at a published price; that is an academic-integrity breach, and the risk falls on the student rather than the seller.

06

Online versus in-home IB tuition from an Al Safa address

Lead with the number a family can check. In-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, per Bestimate's 2026 rate table and independent home-tutor listings. Qualified online subject tutors are published at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200. The difference between those bands is roughly AED 100 to 200 an hour, and what it buys is a journey.

For an Al Safa household the journey is short but badly timed. The neighbourhood sits inside its own school catchment, so a tutor living nearby has a quick run; a tutor living anywhere else is crossing Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Wasl Road at pick-up. In practice that limits the realistic in-home pool to a small number of people with the right availability, and availability is not the same as being the right specialist for Chemistry Paper 2.

The pool argument is the real one. Diploma requirements are narrow. A student needs Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or History Paper 3 on a specific regional option, or an Extended Essay supervisor who understands the criteria in a subject their school does not teach. Accepting live video means choosing from everyone who can do that. Requiring physical presence means choosing from everyone who can do that and lives within twenty minutes.

The trade-offs deserve naming. A student who will not work without somebody in the room benefits from a person being there. A household with an unreliable connection should establish that on the free trial rather than in week three. And handwritten mathematics working needs to be visible, so a document camera or a well-placed phone is worth setting up before a paid session. Online is the better tool for most Diploma work, not for all of it.

What IB tuition costs in Dubai, and what the premium actually buys

Begin with what a parent can verify independently rather than with a rate. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for Dubai private schools for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. School fees are flat this year; tutoring rates are not, which makes the tutoring line more visible in a household budget than it has been.

The published bands, each attributed to its source, run as follows. Budget online and university-student tutors advertise AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

What rises as you move up those bands is specificity, not generic quality. The budget band can supervise homework. The qualified band can teach a syllabus accurately. The specialist band can read a mark scheme for an extended-response question and explain the gap between three marks and five. For Diploma work that last skill is the one being bought, and it is why a cheaper tutor who does not have it can be worse value at a third of the price.

One caution on the top band. Examiner status is frequently claimed and rarely evidenced. We do not describe tutors as IB or Cambridge examiners unless current status can be shown, and no examiner claim should be taken to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. If a provider leans on examiner status at AED 650 an hour, ask what evidence exists before paying for it.

KHDA, ADEK and the regulator map Al Safa parents can use

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects schools annually. For an Al Safa family the practical use is simple: the current published inspection band on KHDA's own listing is the figure worth reading, not a rating quoted on a third-party page that may be two cycles old.

The rest of the country is regulated differently, which matters if a family relocates within the UAE. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same there; both approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so the emirate regulator controls more than inspection. The Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

On mandatory subjects, the federal baseline is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes strictly prohibited.

Dubai's market context is worth holding too, because it affects availability. Dubai had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25, and the enrolment split by curriculum was UK 37%, Indian 26%, US 14% and International Baccalaureate 7%. The 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened in 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. More IB provision is arriving, which over time widens Higher Level subject choice in this part of the city.

09

Permits, honesty and what IB Gram is not

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount a parent sees online should be treated as unverified. Separately, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school.

A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal entity from an individual tutor. It needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram does not hold that permit and does not operate premises in the UAE, and no page of ours should ever imply a regulator or an examination board has approved, accredited or licensed us, because none has.

What we are is an online matching platform. We do not perform or expedite Ministry of Education equivalency or attestation, which is a process the Ministry and the emirate authorities run and which parents should pursue through the official channel. And tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression; any page implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process.

Where we tutor

Al Safa and the streets that share its schools

Diploma students have less free time than any other group in a household, so slot timing decides whether a plan survives. These are the communities around Al Safa, with what each one's school run actually permits.

Al Safa 1

Villa streets off Al Wasl Road with several British secondaries within walking distance. Diploma students here are frequently DP1 entrants who crossed from IGCSE in the same group, and their first-term need is bridging rather than revision.

Al Safa 2

The quieter half bordering Al Quoz 1 across Sheikh Zayed Road. Households here often split children across a British primary and an IB secondary, which produces a mix of MYP and DP requests in the same family.

Al Wasl

Inland along Al Wasl Road, sharing the Al Safa catchment almost entirely. A session time that works for an Al Wasl Diploma student works unchanged here, which is useful when two households want to coordinate slots.

Jumeirah 2

Coastal and school-dense. Diploma students travelling from here meet Beach Road congestion at pick-up, so the first reliable slot is 5pm rather than 4.30pm in the cooler months.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim, feeding the Jumeirah secondaries. Higher Level science combinations are the recurring request from this stretch, often because a school runs one HL group with very few students in it.

Umm Suqeim

Along the coast towards Burj Al Arab, with mixed British and IB provision. Extended Essay supervision requests cluster here, usually where a student has chosen a subject their school does not teach at Higher Level.

Al Manara

Inland of Umm Suqeim and a short run from Al Safa. Smaller villa community with children spread across school groups, so sibling bookings here often span two curricula at once.

Al Quoz 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, nearer than the map suggests off-peak and considerably further at 3pm. Several schools on its edge take Al Safa children, including IB provision.

City Walk

Apartment living with a younger demographic, so proportionally more MYP than Diploma. Where a DP student does live here, the practical issue is a quiet space for a 90-minute Paper 2 practice rather than connectivity.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Safa

Diploma and dual-route schools serving Al Safa

Students we support attend these schools. For Diploma planning the detail that matters is which Higher Level subjects a school actually runs: a thin HL group in one school is a full class two kilometres away, and that difference changes what tutoring has to do.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Safa Community School, Al Quoz 1
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy, Al Barsha

British-curriculum schools in the same catchment

Named as market context for Al Safa families weighing A Level against the Diploma after IGCSE. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes a band on a six-point scale; read the current band on KHDA's own listing rather than a figure quoted elsewhere.

  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School, Al Safa
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh

Named schools are listed as context for the Al Safa education market only; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, the level and the mock breakdown

The component-level mock marks are what make a plan possible. Subject and level alone leave a tutor guessing between Paper 1 technique, Paper 2 extended response and an IA that has not been started. If the school has not provided the breakdown, ask for it before you book.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on a real past-paper question

The trial runs on an actual question from the component in question, not as an introductory chat. You see how the tutor explains the gap between the student's answer and the mark scheme. No payment, no card, and if the fit is wrong we will try another tutor.

  3. 03

A written diagnosis naming the component

After the first paid session you get a short note: which component is costing marks, whether the cause is content, technique or timing, and what the first four sessions will do about it. That note is what the block is judged against later.

  4. 04

Criteria read before any IA or Extended Essay work

For Internal Assessment and core work, the first session reads the criterion letters and their mark allocations with the student. Most students have never seen the allocation table, and seeing it changes what they choose to write about.

  5. 05

Fixed slots on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked on GST around the Al Safa school run, usually from 4.30pm on weekdays with weekend mornings available for longer Extended Essay work. Ramadan slots shift later, including post-Iftar timings, agreed in advance rather than week by week.

  6. 06

A halfway review against the same question types

Midway through a block we re-test the diagnosed component with comparable questions and compare the marks. If nothing has moved, the plan or the tutor changes. Continuing unchanged because sessions are booked is how families pay for comfort instead of progress.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We match on component, not on subject name

Chemistry Paper 2 extended response and the scientific investigation are different pieces of work needing different teaching. Asking which component is costing marks before matching a tutor is the single biggest determinant of whether a block works.

Criterion letters and allocations named explicitly

Not one of the pages ranking for Dubai IB tutoring names an IA criterion. We publish the letters and the mark totals because they tell a student where the available marks actually sit, and because a parent can verify them in the subject guide.

The honesty line is on the page, not implied

Tutors teach, question and give feedback on the student's own work. Nobody writes an IA, Extended Essay or TOK essay. We say so plainly, because at least one provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price.

Every AED figure carries its source

Market rates here are attributed to the provider or table that published them, so they can be checked. Three of the strongest pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in USD, which UAE families do not transact in.

Coverage limits stated before payment

Narrow Higher Level combinations and specific History regional options are not always available in a given window. We will say so rather than filling the slot with a generalist, and we will tell you where the specialist is based.

No regulator or board badges we do not hold

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, MoHRE, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership, operates no UAE premises, and says so. Competitor pages in this market attach regulator badges to their tutors, and that is the most dangerous claim available here.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Safa: your questions answered

What should I ask the school for before hiring an IB tutor in Al Safa?+

The component breakdown of the most recent mock, not the grade. A Diploma mock is two or three written papers plus an Internal Assessment mark in most subjects, and the papers carry different weights. A student five marks off a boundary is often losing nearly all of it in one component, which makes the next block easy to plan and cheap to buy. Ask also which subject guide the cohort follows, because the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle and component percentages differ between versions.

How is the IB score of 45 actually made up?+

Six subjects, each graded from 1 to 7, give a maximum of 42 points. The remaining three come from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together, awarded through a published matrix that combines the grades for each. Students normally take three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard. The practical consequence is that the core is worth more than most families treat it as: three points is a large margin in a system where university offers are stated in whole numbers, and the core is the least supervised part of the programme.

What are the IB Internal Assessment criteria and how many marks does each carry?+

They differ by subject and are published in each subject guide. The sciences scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria of 6 marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The mathematics exploration is marked out of 20 across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. The History historical investigation totals 25 across identification and evaluation of sources, investigation and reflection. Read the allocation table for your child's subject before any work starts; it changes what topic a sensible student chooses.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our home in Al Safa?+

No. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Al Safa lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and mark scheme on a shared screen and a recording available afterwards. We target the home-tutor phrase because that is what parents search for, then answer it honestly. The in-home market in Dubai exists and is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel if you want somebody physically present.

Why does my child write a correct answer and still lose marks?+

Usually because the command term was not answered. IB command terms are defined in the subject guides and grouped by required depth: state, list and identify ask only for recall, describe and explain ask for development, and analyse, evaluate, justify and discuss ask for argument and judgement. A student who writes everything they know in response to a low-depth verb wastes time, and one who states facts in response to evaluate earns very little. Two sessions of verb drill against official mark schemes usually shifts the pattern across every subject at once.

How much does an IB tutor in Al Safa cost per hour?+

Market bands in Dubai, each attributed to its publisher: budget online and student tutors AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified online subject tutors AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650, BartyED publishing AED 650. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel. None of these is an IB Gram price; we quote against a plan after the free trial.

Can a tutor help with my child's Extended Essay without writing it?+

Yes, and that is the only version worth buying. A tutor can interrogate the research question, explain why a question too broad for 4,000 words cannot be answered well, teach research method, explain what each of the five criteria totalling 34 marks requires, and read the student's own draft and say which criterion a section fails. A tutor cannot write, rewrite to completion or dictate any part of it. Any provider offering a completed essay is offering an academic-integrity breach whose consequences fall on your child, not on them.

Which Extended Essay criterion should my child worry about most?+

Critical thinking, which carries the heaviest allocation of the 34 marks by a wide margin. Students spend their time on knowledge and understanding because reading is comfortable, and underinvest in argument, which is where the marks sit. The practical implication arrives early: a research question that invites description cannot score well on critical thinking however much work goes into it. Narrowing the question so that it demands weighing and judgement is the single highest-value decision in the whole process, and it is made months before any writing.

My child has arrived in DP1 from IGCSE and is struggling. What is going on?+

Almost always fluency rather than content. IGCSE rewards accuracy on shorter structured questions; the Diploma assumes algebraic manipulation is automatic and asks for sustained argument under time pressure. In Mathematics Analysis and Approaches the non-calculator paper exposes this immediately. A six to ten session landing block in the first term, aimed at algebra, command terms and timed written response rather than new content, resolves most of it. Separating content gaps from fluency gaps from timing problems is the first session's job, and it is usually possible in one.

Can one tutor cover more than one Diploma subject for the same student?+

For a cross-subject problem, yes, and often better than two specialists. Command terms, essay structure under timed conditions and IA criterion reading are the same skills in every subject, and one tutor holding the whole Diploma profile can fix them once. For deep content work in a specific Higher Level subject, a specialist in that subject is the right choice. Start from the diagnosis: if the pattern of lost marks is the same shape in three subjects, buy the cross-subject work first.

What time can a Diploma session start for an Al Safa household?+

Al Safa sits inside its own school catchment, so arrival home is earlier than in most Dubai communities and a 4.30pm start is usually workable. From Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3 the realistic first slot is 5pm because of Beach Road congestion at pick-up. Diploma students carry the heaviest homework load in a household, so a 60-minute focused session beats a longer one that eats the evening. Slots are booked on Gulf Standard Time and move later during Ramadan, including post-Iftar timings, arranged in advance.

Is online IB tutoring as effective as having someone in the room?+

For component-level Diploma work it is usually better, because the work is document work. The past paper, the mark scheme, the student's script and the criterion table can all be on a shared screen at once, with the tutor's cursor on the exact phrase that lost the mark. The pool argument is stronger still: narrow requirements such as a specific History regional option or Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level need the right specialist, not the nearest one. The exception is a student who genuinely will not work without physical supervision.

Does my child's Higher Level choice matter for UAE university admission?+

It can, and it is worth checking directly with the universities on your child's list rather than relying on general advice. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are treated differently by some engineering and economics programmes, and Higher Level science requirements vary by faculty. Ask the admissions office for the stated requirement in writing. Separately, Ministry of Education equivalency is a distinct process from admission, run by the Ministry and the emirate attestation authorities, and no IB points threshold for it should be trusted unless you have read it on moe.gov.ae.

Which Al Safa schools run the Diploma, and does it matter which one?+

Al Safa and its immediate neighbours contain both IB continuum schools and British-curriculum schools that run A Level after IGCSE, which is why some families move a child at sixteen to get the route they want. Where it matters most for tutoring is Higher Level provision: a school running one HL Physics group with very few students in it offers a different experience from one running a full class. KHDA publishes an annual inspection band for each school, and the current band on KHDA's own listing is the figure to read.

How do the mandatory UAE subjects affect a Diploma timetable?+

They sit alongside it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Six Diploma subjects plus the core plus mandatory subjects is a genuinely full week, which is why one protected weekly hour on a diagnosed component outperforms an ambitious multi-session plan a household cannot sustain.

What happens if no specialist is available for my child's Higher Level subject?+

We tell you, rather than putting a generalist in the slot and hoping. Narrow Diploma combinations genuinely run out: specific History regional options, some Group 2 languages at Higher Level, and particular Extended Essay subjects. Where the right specialist for a component is based outside the UAE, the lesson is still one-to-one over live video and we say upfront where the tutor is. No competitor page we examined in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, and several route UAE parents to non-UAE phone numbers without mentioning it.

Get the component breakdown, then book a trial

One request to your child's school changes everything that follows: ask for the mock results broken down by component rather than as a grade. With that in hand you will usually be able to name the paper or the Internal Assessment that is costing the marks, and a block of tutoring becomes a narrow, finishable piece of work instead of a vague commitment. Then book a free trial lesson on a past-paper question from that component and watch whether the tutor can explain the gap between your child's answer and the mark scheme. Lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, around the Al Safa school run.
