IB MYP Physics Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB MYP physics tutor in Dubai is easy. Knowing by November whether it is working is the hard part, and most families only find out when the next report arrives in February. This page sets out the evidence a parent should be able to see at week four, week eight and week twelve: marked scripts with the error type named, two drafts of the same investigation side by side, and a written note after every lesson. Teaching is one-to-one over live video, timed to the Dubai school week.

  • A marked piece of the student's own work every fortnight
  • Each error named by type, not circled in red without comment
  • Written note after every session, kept so you can compare terms
  • One-to-one over live video, scheduled around the Dubai school run

How to tell, by half term, whether physics tutoring is working

Most families in Dubai judge tutoring by two signals, and both arrive too late to act on. The first is the school report, which lands at the end of a term and reduces an entire semester of physics to a number and a sentence about engagement. The second is the student's own account, which is cheerful in week two and vague by week seven. Neither tells you whether the money is buying anything, and by the time a report says otherwise, a term has gone.

There is a better signal available and it costs nothing to ask for. MYP physics generates marked artefacts continuously: criterion A question sets, criterion B investigation plans, criterion C data processing, end-of-unit tests. A tutor working properly accumulates those artefacts, names the error type on each one, and can show you the same error type disappearing across four pieces of work. That is a record a parent can read in five minutes without knowing any physics, and it is the record this page is built around.

The reason physics lends itself to this is that its failure modes are unusually well defined. A student does not go wrong on physics in general. They go wrong on rearranging an equation with the unknown in the denominator, or on converting centimetres to metres before substituting, or on reading a gradient as a ratio of single values rather than as a change over a change, or on dropping units entirely, or on writing a conclusion that describes a graph instead of answering the hypothesis. Six recurring types cover most of a Dubai MYP physics script. Each can be counted, and counts can fall.

Grade movement needs the same honesty. The MYP does not award percentages. Each of the four criteria is marked from 0 to 8, those four marks sum to a total out of 32, and the school converts the total to a 1 to 7 grade using the boundary table it applies, which the MYP coordinator can give you. So a 5 becoming a 6 is not a few extra per cent; it is specific strand marks moving, usually on criterion C or on the upper bands of criterion A. Tutoring that cannot say which strand it is targeting cannot explain what a grade change would even consist of.

What follows is the operational version of that argument. An evidence pack by week four, eight and twelve. The marked-script loop that produces it. The error inventory with frequencies and fixes. A twelve-week plan counted backwards from a summative. What a session note should contain. How physics is taught without a laboratory on screen, and what honestly stays at school. And the three questions that establish whether a tutor in this market is permitted to work and experienced in this programme.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics appears under three different names across a Dubai student's school career, and the evidence a parent should look for changes with each. Here is what each stage produces that can actually be inspected, and what it predicts about the next one.

MYPAges 11-14 · MYP 1-3

Integrated sciences, physics strand

Forces, energy, light, sound and simple electrical circuits taught inside integrated sciences, usually with the arithmetic kept gentle. The evidence worth collecting at this stage is unit discipline and graph conventions, because a student who leaves MYP 3 writing bare numbers without units carries that habit into every quantitative subject afterwards.

Dubai students arrive in MYP 1 from the PYP and from British and Indian primaries across the city, and their mathematics backgrounds differ more than their science backgrounds do. We check decimal and ratio fluency in the first session, because a physics problem in MYP 2 is usually an arithmetic problem wearing physics clothing.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP physics as a separate subject

Motion and graphs, forces and Newton's laws, energy transfers and efficiency, waves, and electricity including series and parallel circuits. Criterion tasks are now unscaffolded, so an investigation plan has to name and control its own variables, and data processing has to choose its own calculation. The scripts produced here are the most informative evidence in the whole programme.

Most Dubai continuum schools split the sciences at MYP 4, which means a physics teacher, a physics rubric and a physics deadline all appear at once alongside two other sciences doing the same. Families who collect the marked physics work from the first term find the pattern long before the report does.

eAssessmentAge 16 · MYP 5

MYP 5 on-screen assessment

Where a school registers for it, MYP 5 sciences are assessed on screen, with data supplied in the paper and answers typed. Physics suffers more than biology from screen format, because students lose the margin they would normally use for a sketch or a quick rearrangement. Practice has to be timed, typed and on screen to be worth anything.

Ask the MYP coordinator whether your child's cohort is registered for eAssessment or sitting internal examinations, because the two need different preparation. We publish no IB dates on these pages: the IB's own site cannot be verified automatically, so confirm every date with the school or on ibo.org before planning around it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Physics at Standard or Higher Level, with uncertainties handled quantitatively, logarithmic and linearised relationships, and an internal assessment designed by the student from a research question of their own. The MYP criterion C record is the best available predictor of how the internal assessment will go, and better than any mock paper mark.

Dubai students choosing between DP Physics and A Level Physics at the end of MYP 5 often decide on timetable availability. The more useful evidence is the strand record: strong recall with weak independent data processing is the profile that finds DP year one hardest, and it is visible in marked MYP work two years earlier.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The list below is the MYP physics content Dubai families ask about, written with the specific place marks are lost in each. Every line is checkable against your child's own marked scripts, which is the point.

Motion, speed and distance-time graphs

MYP 3-5

Reading a gradient is the skill, and it is the one most often faked. Students take a single pair of coordinates and divide, which gives the right answer only through the origin. Teaching change in y over change in x, with both read off the axes, repairs several criterion C marks at once.

Forces, Newton's laws and free-body diagrams

MYP 4-5

The common loss is a diagram with arrows of equal length for unequal forces, or a resultant stated without direction. Marks here are mostly presentational, which makes them cheap to recover once a student is shown what the mark scheme actually looks for in a labelled diagram.

Energy transfers, work and efficiency

MYP 4-5

Efficiency calculations fail on units and on which energy goes on top. Students who can state the formula still divide the wrong way round under time pressure. A short drill of six calculations with mixed units, repeated weekly, moves this permanently within a month.

Waves, sound and light

MYP 3-5

Wave diagrams needing amplitude and wavelength marked correctly, the wave equation applied with consistent units, and refraction explained as a change of speed rather than as bending. The last of those is a mechanism, so it belongs to the explain command term and is marked accordingly.

Electricity, circuits and resistance

MYP 4-5

Series and parallel behaviour, Ohm's law, and the practical investigation of resistance that nearly every MYP 4 cohort runs. The errors cluster on rearranging the equation when the unknown is in the denominator and on reading an ammeter scale with the wrong interval.

Criterion B physics investigation design

MYP 4-5 · 0-8

A testable hypothesis with a physical mechanism, variables named with the method of control for each, and a replicable procedure. Physics plans usually fail on control: a student varying the length of a wire who says nothing about keeping the thickness and material constant has designed an uncontrolled experiment.

Criterion C data processing in physics

MYP 4-5 · 0-8

Repeat readings averaged, a derived quantity calculated rather than raw values plotted, a line of best fit judged rather than joined, anomalies identified, and a conclusion that names the hypothesis. This is where the largest number of recoverable marks sits in a physics script.

The mathematics underneath physics

MYP 4-5

Rearranging equations, standard form, significant figures, unit conversion and gradient work. A student who is behind in MYP mathematics presents as weak in physics, and the sessions that help most are frequently mathematics sessions aimed at four specific operations.

Measurement, uncertainty and significant figures

MYP 5

Instrument resolution, repeat spread, and answers quoted to a sensible number of figures. This carries few MYP marks directly and predicts DP Physics difficulty strongly, so it is worth teaching in MYP 5 even when the current rubric barely rewards it.

Command terms in physics questions

MYP 1-5

State, describe, explain, calculate, determine and evaluate each demand a different answer shape. Calculate and determine both want working shown; explain wants a mechanism. Students who annotate the command term before writing lose fewer marks to misreading than to any gap in content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of physics support, chosen by what the marked evidence says rather than by budget. All are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with written notes after each session.

Diagnostic block, three sessions

Three sessions whose only job is to establish what is actually wrong. The student works through mixed physics questions and a past criterion task while the tutor counts error types rather than correcting them one by one. It ends with a written inventory and a recommendation, which may be that no weekly slot is needed.

  • Error types counted and tallied, not just marked
  • Ends in a written inventory you keep
  • May conclude that a mathematics intervention is the real answer
  • Can finish there with no ongoing commitment

Twelve-week plan to a summative

A term-length plan counted backwards from the school's physics summative or end-of-year examination, with a marked piece every fortnight and a mid-point review. The evidence pack at weeks four, eight and twelve is the deliverable, alongside the teaching itself.

  • Planned backwards from the school's own date
  • Marked work at weeks two, four, six, eight, ten and twelve
  • Mid-point review that can change the target strand
  • Written note after every session

Fortnightly maintenance

For students who are already secure and need the habits held rather than built. One session every two weeks reviewing a marked piece, correcting drift, and keeping unit and gradient discipline intact. This is the cheapest useful arrangement and the one we recommend most often after a successful block.

  • One session every two weeks, one marked piece each time
  • Catches the drift that follows a successful intervention
  • Pauses during school examination weeks
  • Scales back up if a marked piece slips

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What evidence of progress in MYP physics looks like at weeks four, eight and twelve

  • Week zero: a baseline script with error types counted
  • Week four: the first error type measurably reduced
  • Week eight: a redraft beside its original on the same task
  • Week twelve: a school-marked piece on the targeted strand

A parent who cannot read physics can still audit physics tutoring, provided the tutor produces the right artefacts. The question to ask is not whether the sessions are going well. It is: show me the last marked piece, tell me which error types you counted, and tell me how that count compares with week one. If those three answers exist, the arrangement is working or visibly not working, and either way you can act. If they do not exist, the only available evidence is the student's mood.

The table sets out what should be in the folder by each checkpoint. Week zero is a baseline, which matters because without it no later improvement can be demonstrated. Week four should show the first error type falling. Week eight should show a redrafted criterion task beside its original, which is the single most persuasive artefact in MYP science tutoring because the change is visible to anyone. Week twelve should show a school-marked piece, not a tutor-marked one, since the school's mark is the one that counts.

That last distinction matters more than it sounds. A tutor marking their own student's work is a useful teaching device and weak evidence. The strong evidence is a school-set, school-marked task scoring better on the strand the tutoring targeted. In MYP physics that usually arrives in the second half of a term, which is why twelve weeks is the right unit for judging an intervention rather than four. Four weeks is enough to tell whether the diagnosis was right; twelve is what it takes to see the school's own marks move.

02

The marked-script loop: how one session uses last fortnight's work

  • Mark by error type, not by circling
  • The student corrects their own script aloud before new teaching begins
  • Teach what the errors revealed, then set the next piece
  • Tally goes into the session note so the record accumulates

The loop is simple enough to describe in four steps and rare enough in practice to be worth describing. The student does a piece of work. The tutor marks it against the school's rubric and names each error by type rather than circling it. The next session opens by making the student correct two of those errors themselves, out loud, explaining why the original was wrong. Then the session teaches whatever the errors revealed, and sets the next piece. Repeat fortnightly.

The step that does the work is the third one. A student who is told they forgot to convert centimetres to metres learns nothing durable, because being told is not the same as noticing. A student who is handed their own script and asked to find the two unit errors in it starts checking units unprompted within a few weeks. The same applies to gradients: a student who recalculates their own wrong gradient, reading the change in y and the change in x off the axes, stops taking single coordinate pairs.

The loop also produces the audit trail almost incidentally. Six marked pieces across a term, each with a typed error tally, is a record of exactly what changed and when. We send the tally in the session note so it accumulates in your inbox rather than in a folder nobody opens. Parents in Dubai are often at work while lessons run, and this is the only honest substitute for sitting in on one. It is also what makes a conversation with the school's physics teacher productive, because you arrive with specifics instead of an impression.

03

The MYP physics error inventory: six types, with frequencies and fixes

Across the marked MYP physics work we see from Dubai schools, six error types account for the large majority of lost marks, and only one of them is a knowledge problem. That proportion is the single most useful thing a parent can know before buying tutoring, because it means a plan built on re-teaching topics is aimed at the smallest part of the problem. The table lists the six with the root cause and the fix, so you can match them against your child's own scripts this evening.

Two deserve particular attention. Unit and conversion errors are the most frequent and the fastest to fix, and they are also the ones most often dismissed as carelessness. They are not carelessness; they are a missing habit, namely writing the unit next to every number as it is written rather than at the end. The habit takes about three weeks to install and then holds for years. Gradient misreading is the second, and it matters disproportionately because it corrupts criterion C on every graph-based investigation the student will do.

The one knowledge-shaped error on the list is the mechanism error: explaining refraction as light bending rather than as a change of speed, or explaining a series circuit by restating the observation. That is genuine physics teaching and takes longer, which is why it is worth knowing how little of a typical script it accounts for. Count the types on your child's last two marked pieces before you buy anything, and the right purchase usually becomes obvious: often a short block on arithmetic habits rather than a year of physics content.

What a grade change in MYP physics actually consists of

  • Four criteria at 0-8 each, totalling 32, converted by the school's boundary table
  • Ask the MYP coordinator for the boundary table your school applies
  • Criterion C usually holds the most mechanically recoverable marks in physics
  • No tutor can promise a grade; a tutor can name the strand and show the evidence

Parents often ask how many marks a tutor will add, and the question cannot be answered honestly in that form, partly because nobody can promise a grade and partly because the MYP does not work in marks the way the question assumes. Physics is assessed against four criteria, each marked from 0 to 8. The four scores sum to a total out of 32, and the school converts that total into a 1 to 7 grade using the boundary table it applies. Ask the MYP coordinator for that table; it is the only accurate way to see how far your child is from the next grade.

What follows from this is useful. Because each criterion is scored separately, a student can be two marks from a grade change on one strand and nowhere near it on another, and the cheapest route up is almost always the strand with the most mechanical losses. In physics that is nearly always criterion C. A student scoring 5 on criterion C because their conclusions describe graphs and their data is unprocessed can realistically address both inside a term, and those are strand marks rather than a vague improvement.

It also follows that some targets are not worth buying. Moving criterion A from 7 to 8 is expensive, slow and depends on handling genuinely unfamiliar applications under time pressure. Moving criterion D from 4 to 6 may be a referencing exercise. No tutor can promise any of it, and anyone who does is selling something other than teaching. What a tutor can do is name the strand, show the marks that are mechanically recoverable, and produce the fortnightly evidence that lets you judge whether the recovery is happening.

05

A twelve-week physics plan, counted backwards from the summative

Plans fail when they are counted forwards from the day you hire someone. Count backwards from the date the school assesses, and the sequence organises itself: revision of marked work in the final fortnight, no new content in the last three weeks, the redraft at week eight while there is still time for it to matter, and the diagnosis done early enough to be wrong without costing the term. The table is the version we use, and it assumes a single weekly session with a marked piece every fortnight.

Two features are deliberate. The mid-point review at week six exists because first diagnoses are sometimes wrong, and a plan with no scheduled opportunity to change direction will simply continue in the wrong one. And the last three weeks teach nothing new, because new content introduced late competes with consolidation and generally loses. Students arrive at a physics summative better prepared by rehearsing six familiar calculation types than by meeting a seventh.

The plan also survives the Dubai calendar, which is the practical test. School examination weeks are pause weeks, not extra weeks. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar or a late weekend morning and shorten to forty-five minutes. Half term is used for the redraft, since no new school content is arriving to compete with it. Families who plan those three interruptions at the start of the term almost always complete the twelve weeks; families who do not usually finish eight of them and then wonder why the evidence pack is thin.

What a session note should say, and what to do when it says nothing

  • Four elements: strand worked, what went wrong, work set, next check
  • Named by error type or strand, never by topic alone
  • Two vague notes in a row is a reason to ask for the tally
  • Take the accumulated notes to the school parent meeting

A session note is a short written record sent after each lesson, and it is the mechanism that makes everything above auditable. A useful one has four elements: what was worked on, named by strand or error type rather than by topic; what the student did with it, including what they got wrong during the session; what has been set; and what the next marked piece should show. Four lines is enough. It takes a tutor three minutes and it is the difference between a record and an impression.

A note that says we covered forces and motion and he is improving contains no information. Nothing in it can be checked, compared with last fortnight or taken to a physics teacher. If that is what arrives twice in a row, ask directly for the error tally and the strand name. A tutor working from marked evidence will produce them immediately, because they already exist in their marking. A tutor working from a textbook sequence will not, and that answer is itself the information you needed.

For Dubai households this matters more than it might elsewhere, because the parent is frequently not in the room. Sessions run at six or seven in the evening while one or both parents are still at work in Business Bay or DIFC, and the student's report of the lesson is not a reliable instrument. The accumulated notes also make the parent-teacher conversation at school far more productive: arriving with three specific error types and the dates they were last seen gets a far better conversation with a physics teacher than asking how he is doing in physics.

07

Teaching physics without a laboratory, and what honestly stays at school

  • Practical work stays at school, supervised, with school apparatus
  • Design is rehearsed before the lesson and data processed after it
  • Spreadsheets and simulators run live on a shared screen
  • A tutor who offers to run the practicals has misread the programme

Physics is the science where the online question gets asked most, because it is the one with apparatus in the room. The honest answer is in two parts. Practical work belongs at school, supervised, with the school's equipment, and no tutor of any kind replaces that. Nothing on this page suggests otherwise, and a tutor who offers to run your child's MYP practicals is offering something the programme does not want.

What a tutor does is the design before and the processing after, and both are better on a shared screen than at a table. Before: the plan is read, the hypothesis is pushed for a mechanism, the variable list is challenged for controls, and the method is tested by having the student read it aloud while the tutor follows it literally and asks what happens next. After: the data goes into a spreadsheet the student keeps, repeats are averaged, a derived quantity is calculated, and a line of best fit is drawn and argued about.

Simulations cover the rest usefully. A circuit simulator lets a student change one resistor while predicting the ammeter reading, which demonstrates control far better than a demonstration with real wires and a flat battery. A motion simulation can be run twice with one variable altered while the student narrates what is being held constant. None of this is a substitute for a school laboratory and none of it needs to be. It is the part of physics where the marks are, and it happens to be the part that a shared screen does well.

08

Checking a physics tutor in Dubai: the permit and three other questions

  • MoHRE permit: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, free, valid two years
  • Ask which criterion strands the tutor has marked, and at which year group
  • Insist on working from the school's own task sheet and rubric
  • Decline an arrangement with your child's own classroom teacher

Start with the legal position, because it is checkable and most families never ask. Private tuition in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any circulating figure with scepticism. Since the permit costs nothing, ask to see it.

Then three questions about the teaching. First: which MYP physics criterion strands have you marked, and at which year? A tutor who has marked criterion C work will answer with specifics about data processing; one who has not will talk about topics. Second: will you work from our school's task sheet and rubric? Schools write their own MYP tasks, so the answer has to be yes. Third: what written record arrives after each session? If the answer is nothing, there is no way to audit the arrangement.

One further caution worth knowing in this country. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That rule has been press-reported rather than read here from ADEK's current document, so verify it with ADEK before relying on it. The practical conclusion holds regardless: an arrangement where your child's own physics teacher tutors them privately for a fee is one to decline, however convenient it looks.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and what they change about the physics evidence loop

Teaching is online, so your address does not determine who teaches your child. It does affect when marked work can realistically be reviewed, which is the one part of this loop that depends on the student being alert rather than merely present.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Close to several continuum campuses, so a marked script can be reviewed the same day it is returned, while the student still remembers what they were thinking. The quickest evidence loop in the city runs here.

Dubai Marina, JBR and JLT

Apartment study space and late bus arrivals push sessions past 6pm. Calculation drills and marked-script review work well at that hour; new investigation design does not, so we schedule it at weekends.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Long cross-city commutes to IB campuses, so by early evening the student is tired. We put graph and gradient work in the weekday slot and keep criterion B planning for a Saturday morning.

Arabian Ranches, The Springs and The Meadows

The communities where in-home physics tuition is priced highest in Dubai because of the drive. Online removes the travel premium and lets the household choose a physics specialist instead of a general science tutor.

Dubai Hills Estate and Meydan

Reliable connections and a study room, so screen-shared spreadsheets, circuit simulators and graphing tools run without friction. Most of our twelve-week plans with full evidence packs come from households like these.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Siblings often sit on different curricula within one house, so a session may cover MYP 4 physics one evening and Cambridge IGCSE 0625 the next. The error inventory is similar; the mark schemes are not.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Parents working late who read the session note rather than attending the session. We write it the same evening, naming the error types counted and what the next marked piece should show.

School ecosystem

Dubai campuses where MYP physics splits out early

Where the sciences separate at the start of MYP 4, students meet an unscaffolded physics investigation within the first half term, and the first marked criterion B plan is the most useful document a parent will see all year. Collect it, because it shows the control-variable problem before any grade does.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send two marked physics scripts

Two is better than one, because the error types that appear in both are the real ones. Photographs are fine. Include the rubric or strand marks if the school publishes them. We read them before the first session and arrive with a counted inventory rather than a general plan, which is also how you judge whether we read them at all.

  2. 02

Take the free trial lesson, with the condition stated

One forty-five-minute online session at no charge, no card details taken, nothing to cancel afterwards. The tutor works on the scripts you sent and finishes by naming the error types, their counts and what a twelve-week plan would target. You keep that written inventory whether or not you book anything further.

Agree a plan counted backwards from the school's date

Ask the school when the next physics summative or end-of-year examination falls, and count back from it. The plan sets the baseline early, puts the redraft at week eight, reviews at week six, and teaches nothing new in the final three weeks. Pause weeks for school examinations and Ramadan go in at this stage, not later.

  4. 04

Mark a piece every fortnight and keep the tally

Every second session uses a piece of the student's own work, marked by error type against the school rubric, with the tally sent in the session note. Six marked pieces a term is the audit trail. It is also what makes a parent-teacher meeting at school a conversation about specifics rather than about impressions.

  5. 05

Review at week six and at week twelve, honestly

At week six the target strand can change, because first diagnoses are sometimes wrong. At week twelve we look at a school-marked piece and decide whether to continue weekly, drop to fortnightly maintenance or stop. Stopping is a normal outcome, and a tutor who never recommends it is not reading their own evidence.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Progress you can inspect without knowing physics

Marked scripts with error types counted, a redraft beside its original, and a school-marked piece at week twelve. Those three artefacts let a parent judge an arrangement in five minutes. The alternative, which is most of this market, is waiting for a report that arrives after the term it describes has ended.

Diagnosis before purchase

A three-session diagnostic block exists because the right answer is sometimes not physics at all. Where the inventory shows rearrangement and unit errors dominating, the useful intervention is a short arithmetic-habit block, not a year of physics content. We will say so, including when it means selling fewer hours.

A written note after every single session

Four lines: strand worked, what the student got wrong in the session, work set, what the next marked piece should show. Dubai parents are often at work when sessions run, and the student's own account of the lesson is not an instrument you can plan with.

No promises about grades, by policy

The MYP scores four criteria out of 8 each and the school converts the total using its own boundary table. Anyone promising a grade is describing something they cannot control. What we promise is a named strand, fortnightly marked evidence and an honest review at week six and week twelve.

Clear about what stays at school

Practical work belongs in the school laboratory with school apparatus and supervision. Design and data processing are where criterion marks live and where a shared screen genuinely helps. We also hold no accreditation from KHDA, the IB or any examination board, and we state that rather than implying otherwise.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How will I know by half term whether physics tutoring is working?+

Ask for three things at week four: the baseline script from week one, the second script, and the error tally for both. If the most frequent error type has fallen, the diagnosis was right and the plan should continue. If it has not, the target strand is probably wrong and should change at the week-six review rather than at the end of term. Week eight should add a redraft beside its original, and week twelve a school-marked piece. None of that requires you to read physics, only to compare two counts.

What are the most common mistakes in MYP physics scripts?+

Six types cover most lost marks, and only one is a knowledge gap. Unit and conversion errors come first, usually centimetres substituted where metres are expected. Then rearrangement, particularly when the unknown sits in the denominator. Then gradient misreading, where a single coordinate pair is divided instead of change over change. Then unprocessed data plotted raw. Then a conclusion that describes the graph without naming the hypothesis. The sixth is the genuine content error, such as explaining refraction as bending rather than as a change of speed.

Can a tutor tell me how many marks my child will gain in physics?+

No, and anyone who does is describing something outside their control. What a tutor can do is name the strand where marks are mechanically recoverable and show the evidence of recovery fortnightly. In MYP physics that strand is usually criterion C, because unprocessed data and conclusions that describe rather than conclude are structural losses rather than knowledge ones. Ask the MYP coordinator for the boundary table the school uses to convert the total out of 32 into a 1 to 7 grade, and you can see how far the next grade actually is.

Why does my child get physics right in class and wrong on tests?+

Usually because classwork is scaffolded and tests are not, and the scaffold hides the arithmetic. In class the equation is already rearranged on the board and the units are consistent. Under test conditions the student must rearrange before substituting and convert first, and those two operations are where the errors live. The test for this is cheap: give them six mixed-unit calculations with the unknown in the denominator, untimed. If accuracy collapses, the problem is habits rather than physics, and that is a four to six session fix.

Is it worth tutoring MYP physics if my child is already getting a 6?+

Often fortnightly maintenance rather than weekly sessions. A student at 6 usually has secure content and one or two strand-level habits still leaking marks, most often unit discipline under time pressure or an evaluation that names nothing fixable. One session every two weeks reviewing a marked piece holds the habits and catches drift, which is the usual pattern after a successful intervention. It is also considerably cheaper. Buying a weekly slot for a student at 6 generally pays for revision they would have done anyway.

How does an online tutor handle the physics practical work?+

It does not, and should not. MYP practical work is done at school, supervised, with the school's apparatus. What a tutor does is the design before it and the processing after it, which is where criteria B and C are actually marked. Before the lesson, the plan is pushed for a mechanism in the hypothesis and a method of control for each variable. Afterwards, the data goes into a spreadsheet live, repeats are averaged, a derived quantity is calculated and a line of best fit is argued over. Simulators cover variable-control demonstrations.

What should a tutor's written note after a physics session contain?+

Four things, in four lines. The strand or error type worked on, named rather than described as a topic. What the student got wrong during the session, because that is the live diagnostic. What has been set before next time. And what the next marked piece should show if the work is landing. A note saying we covered forces and he is improving cannot be checked against anything. If two notes in a row read like that, ask directly for the error tally, and the answer tells you what you need to know.

Does an MYP physics tutor in Dubai need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. Private tuition in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no schedule of fines is published, any specific figure you read should be treated with caution. Since it costs nothing, ask to see it.

My child is strong at physics but weak at the maths inside it. What should we buy?+

Probably mathematics, aimed at four operations rather than at a syllabus: rearranging equations with the unknown in the denominator, standard form, unit conversion and gradient as a rate of change. That is a six to eight session block, not a year. A diagnostic that counts error types will show this clearly, because the tally will be dominated by rearrangement and conversion with very few mechanism errors. Buying physics content teaching for that profile means paying for explanations the student already understands while the actual obstacle goes untouched.

How long before a school-set physics mark actually moves?+

Usually a full term, which is why twelve weeks is the right unit for judging an intervention. Four weeks is long enough to see whether the diagnosis was right, measured in the tutor's own error tally. Eight weeks is long enough to see corrections appear in the student's own redraft. But the school's marks depend on the school's assessment calendar, and the next summative on the targeted strand may not arrive until week ten or later. Agree in advance which school-set piece will be the test, so neither side moves the goalposts.

Can one tutor cover both MYP physics and MYP mathematics?+

Frequently yes, and for this particular pairing it is often the better purchase. The arithmetic that damages MYP physics scripts is the same arithmetic assessed in MYP mathematics: rearrangement, standard form, ratio, gradient. A tutor working across both can fix the operation once and then apply it in the physics context immediately, which is faster than two separate tutors approaching it from opposite sides. Ask for the error tally to be kept across both subjects so you can see the same error type falling in two places.

What changes for physics when the MYP 5 assessment is taken on screen?+

Where a school registers for eAssessment, the format costs physics students more than it costs biology students, because physics thinking usually involves sketching and rearranging in the margin and the screen removes that space. Preparation has to be timed, typed and on screen, with data read from supplied tables rather than from tables the student drew. We also drill planning a long answer in two lines before typing. Confirm with the MYP coordinator whether the cohort sits eAssessment or internal examinations, because the preparation differs.

Should we pause physics tutoring during school examination weeks?+

Yes, almost always. A student revising for six or seven subjects does not benefit from a seventh commitment in the same week, and a session squeezed into that week tends to be low value for both sides. Pause rather than cancel, so the slot is still there afterwards. The same applies during Ramadan, where sessions work better moved to post-Iftar or a late weekend morning and shortened to forty-five minutes. Plan both interruptions at the start of the term and the twelve-week plan usually survives intact.

What if the evidence at week twelve shows no improvement at all?+

Then something in the arrangement is wrong, and the useful response is to identify which thing rather than to add hours. Three candidates: the diagnosis was wrong and the target strand was never the problem, the slot was unworkable and sessions kept moving, or the student is not engaging and no amount of teaching fixes that from outside. The error tally and the session notes usually distinguish them. We would rather stop and say so than roll a plan into a second term that the first term's evidence does not support.

Send two marked scripts and ask for the tally

The useful question about physics tutoring is not whether a tutor is good. It is what you will be able to see at week four, week eight and week twelve, and whether anyone has written it down. Send two marked physics scripts and the rubric, take the free trial lesson, and read the error inventory that follows it. If the inventory names the error types and their counts, you have the baseline every later comparison depends on. If it does not, you have learned something useful at no cost. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled around the Dubai school week, with in-home visits offered only in India.
