IB IGCSE Tutor for Gems Metropole School Students in Dubai

The commonest reason a family searches for an IB IGCSE tutor for Gems Metropole School students in Dubai is a science decision made at options evening that nobody fully explained. Combined Science, Coordinated Sciences and the three separate sciences are four different routes with four different grade outcomes and four different sixth-form consequences. This page sets out what each one is. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Each science route named by its Cambridge specification code
  • Sixth-form consequences stated subject by subject, not in general terms
  • One-to-one live video delivery; no visits to UAE addresses

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Four science routes, and the one nobody explains

Science is the only part of an IGCSE timetable where the structure of the qualification itself, rather than the grade, decides what a pupil can do next. A pupil with a grade 6 in English has a grade 6 in English. A pupil with a grade 6 in Combined Science and a pupil with grade 6s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are in materially different positions when they apply for a sixth-form science course, and the difference is in the route rather than the attainment.

Cambridge offers four of them. Combined Science, code 0653, is a single award: reduced content from all three sciences reported as one grade. Coordinated Sciences, code 0654, is a double award covering more content and reporting two grades. And the three separate sciences - Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 - are three full qualifications reported as three grades. Pearson Edexcel offers an equivalent set with its own codes. Each route has Core and Extended tiers where tiering applies, which multiplies the options again.

Options evening rarely conveys this clearly, and not through any bad faith. The choice is usually framed as how much science a pupil wants to do, which is true and incomplete. The part that goes unsaid is the consequence: several Dubai sixth forms treat Combined Science as below the entry requirement for A Level Chemistry or Physics, and some degree routes assume separate sciences at 16 without saying so. Those are facts a family can check in Year 9 and discover in Year 12.

The decision is also not purely academic. Separate sciences occupy three slots on a timetable, which means something else comes off it - often a second language, a creative subject or a humanity. On a nine or ten subject timetable that trade is real, and it interacts with other requirements. The UAE Ministry of Education's British-track equivalency rule requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, which makes the shape of a timetable a practical matter as well as an academic one.

This page therefore sets out what each route contains, how the grades work, what each one keeps open, which pupil each suits, and when it is still possible to change. It also says plainly what tutoring can and cannot do about a route decision, which is less than families often hope: an outside provider can produce evidence and close a specific gap, and it cannot change which specification a centre enters its pupils for or persuade a sixth form to accept a qualification it does not accept. Tuition for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and home visits are a service offered only in India.

Four stages, and the science route decision sits at the boundary between the first two. Everything after it is shaped by it.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 science

Taught as general science in most Dubai schools, with the three disciplines separating towards Year 9. This is where the evidence that informs an options recommendation is produced, and where a pupil who is strong in biology and weak in physics starts to look like a Combined Science candidate rather than a separate-sciences one.

Dubai schools set science from Year 9 in many cases, and a set allocation made then frequently informs both the route and the tier recommended for IGCSE. A pupil whose physics is weak for a specific and fixable reason may be routed on that basis, which is worth testing before accepting.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE sciences

Four available routes with different content loads, award structures and grade outputs. All routes examine a practical or alternative-to-practical component worth around a fifth of the grade. Tiering applies in the Cambridge routes, so Core entry caps the grade scale regardless of performance on the day.

UAE candidates sit June and November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used, so the school's zone is worth knowing rather than assuming.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International A Level sciences

Three or four subjects in depth, with published IGCSE entry grades that departments apply. The route taken at 16 matters here as much as the grade: several Dubai sixth forms require a separate science at a stated grade for the corresponding A Level, and Combined Science frequently does not satisfy that requirement.

Dubai sixth forms publish subject-specific thresholds, and science departments often publish a mathematics requirement alongside, because the quantitative work in Year 12 assumes Extended-tier mathematics. Checking both in Year 9 rather than Year 11 is a short job with a long payoff.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme sciences

Each Diploma science is studied at Higher or Standard Level within the group structure, so a pupil takes one or two sciences rather than three. Higher Level sciences assume secure Extended-tier content, and a Combined Science background is a thinner base for that than a separate science is.

Dubai keeps adding Diploma places, with three of the seven schools joining the 2026-27 intake offering the International Baccalaureate among 16,846 new places. A pupil moving from Combined Science into a Higher Level science has a real gap to close in the first term.

The science routes first, with their codes and award types, then the subjects whose marks depend on the same skills. Confirm every code and award type on the live syllabus for your child's series.

Combined Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0653)

Core and Extended

A single award covering reduced content from biology, chemistry and physics, reported as one grade. A sensible route for a pupil whose strengths lie elsewhere, and a constraint on A Level science entry at several Dubai sixth forms.

Coordinated Sciences (Cambridge IGCSE 0654)

Core and Extended

A double award with more content than Combined Science and two grades reported. The middle route, and the most commonly overlooked: it keeps considerably more open than 0653 while occupying fewer timetable slots than three separate sciences.

Biology (Cambridge IGCSE 0610)

Core and Extended

A full separate qualification. High content volume, lower conceptual difficulty, and the science where marks go to imprecise terminology and command-term mismatches rather than to misunderstanding.

Chemistry (Cambridge IGCSE 0620)

Core and Extended

A full separate qualification where moles and organic chemistry decide the Extended-tier grade. The content most frequently reduced in the Combined and Coordinated routes is also the content A Level Chemistry assumes first.

Physics (Cambridge IGCSE 0625)

Core and Extended

A full separate qualification, and the science where mathematical fluency matters most. Rearranging equations, unit conversion and sensible precision are examined inside physics questions, which is why a maths gap shows up here first.

Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0580)

Core and Extended

The subject every science route depends on. A pupil on Extended-tier science with Core-tier mathematics is carrying a mismatch that will show up in the quantitative parts of chemistry and physics long before anyone names it.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences

Single tier

Pearson offers separate sciences and a double award with its own codes and no tiering, which removes the ceiling question and raises a different one about accessing the whole paper. A pupil transferring mid-course needs the specifications reconciled.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500 and 0990)

IGCSE

Relevant to science because extended-response marks are writing marks. A pupil who cannot structure a six-mark explanation loses the same marks in physics as in English, and the repair transfers between them.

Computer Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0478)

IGCSE

Frequently chosen in the slot that separate sciences would have occupied. Worth knowing that it does not substitute for a science in any Dubai sixth-form science entry requirement, whatever its own merits.

Arabic as an Additional Language

IGCSE and school-stream

Mandatory provision in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, under KHDA's requirements. Relevant to timetable planning because Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the MoE's five-subject equivalency count.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, matched to where in the science decision a family actually is. The first is the one that matters most and takes the least time.

A route diagnostic, two sessions

The pupil sits Extended-tier questions from a separate science paper under timing, and the script is marked against the real mark scheme. The output is a judgement about whether they can access separate-science content, plus a list of the sixth-form thresholds that depend on the answer. That is the evidence an options conversation needs.

  • Extended-tier separate-science questions attempted under timing
  • Marks broken down by content, method, command term and timing
  • Sixth-form science entry grades looked up for the schools you would consider
  • A written note a head of science can read in five minutes

Weekly one-to-one in the weakest science

Where a route decision hinges on one discipline being weak - usually physics, usually for mathematical reasons - an hour a week aimed at that specific weakness can change what is realistically available. This has to happen in Year 9 or early Year 10 to be useful, not after an entry is made.

  • Session content built from the school's own scheme of work
  • One piece of the pupil's own written work marked each week
  • Mathematical fluency addressed where physics is the blocker
  • A stated target and a point at which the work ends

A practical component block, all routes

Every science route examines a practical or alternative-to-practical component worth around a fifth of the grade, and it tests written method rather than laboratory skill. Six to eight sessions on it raises marks across every science a pupil is taking at once, whichever route they are on.

  • Methods written by the pupil and marked live against the scheme
  • Variables, precision, tabulation, graphs and improvements covered
  • Valuable on Combined, Coordinated and separate routes equally
  • Fully workable on a shared screen with past-paper questions

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The four routes, and what the choice actually is

The question at options evening is usually posed as how much science a pupil wants to take. The question that will matter in two years is what the award structure is, because that is what a sixth-form admissions page refers to. Combined Science 0653 produces one grade from reduced content across the three disciplines. Coordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award with more content and two grades. The separate sciences produce three grades from three full qualifications.

That structural difference has three consequences. First, timetable space: separate sciences take three option slots, Coordinated Sciences typically takes two, and Combined Science takes one. Second, the certificate: a pupil with three separate science grades has three subjects on their certificate where a Combined Science pupil has one. Third, admissions: a requirement expressed as 'grade 7 in Chemistry' is satisfied by 0620 and is a different question entirely for a 0653 candidate.

Tiering layers on top of all of it. The Cambridge science routes offer Core and Extended tiers, and Core entry caps the grade scale regardless of how well the papers are answered. So a pupil can be on the right route at the wrong tier, or the right tier on a route that does not open the door they want. Those are two separate conversations and they are routinely merged into one vague worry about science being difficult.

The practical instruction is to establish, in writing, exactly what your child is entered for: the code, the award type and the tier. Then look up the sixth-form science entry requirements for the schools you would plausibly consider. Those two pieces of information answer most of the anxiety in this area, and both are available for the cost of an email. Always confirm the current structure on the live Cambridge or Pearson documentation, because specifications are revised.

What Combined Science covers, and what it leaves out

Combined Science is not a watered-down version of each separate science; it is a selection from each. The syllabus takes core material from biology, chemistry and physics and omits the parts that are most demanding and, not coincidentally, the parts that A Level courses assume first. The specific omissions vary by series and must be read from the live syllabus, but the pattern is consistent: the quantitative and the abstract go first.

In chemistry that typically means reduced treatment of the mole and of organic chemistry, which are the two topics A Level Chemistry builds on in its opening weeks. In physics it means reduced treatment of the more mathematical areas, which are the same areas A Level Physics assumes. In biology the reduction is more in breadth than in depth, which is part of why a Combined Science pupil moving to A Level Biology usually has a smaller gap than one moving to A Level Chemistry.

That asymmetry is worth knowing because it changes the advice. A pupil on Combined Science who later wants A Level Biology is in a recoverable position with a summer of work. The same pupil wanting A Level Chemistry or Physics faces a larger gap in content that is also conceptually harder, and a sixth form may reasonably decline the application rather than set them up to struggle. This is not gatekeeping for its own sake.

None of this makes Combined Science a poor choice. For a pupil whose strengths and intentions lie in languages, humanities, creative subjects or business, it is a sensible way to hold a science qualification without surrendering three option slots to it. The error is choosing it while intending a science route later, and that error is made at options evening by families who were never told the two were connected.

03

The grade arithmetic: one, two or three grades

A certificate is a list, and the length of the list matters in ways families do not anticipate. A pupil taking nine subjects with three separate sciences has nine entries of which three are sciences. A pupil taking nine subjects with Combined Science has nine entries of which one is a science, and two of the freed slots went elsewhere. Both are nine-subject pupils; their certificates look quite different to anyone reading them.

The UAE adds a specific reason to think about this. The Ministry of Education's British-track equivalency rule requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. For most pupils with a full timetable this is comfortably met either way. For a pupil on a thinner timetable it is arithmetic worth checking, and how a double award is counted for that purpose is a question for the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority rather than for a tutoring page.

There is also a risk-spreading argument that cuts both ways. Three separate science grades mean a bad day in one paper affects one grade. One Combined Science grade means the whole science outcome rests on a smaller number of papers, which is lower exposure in some respects and higher concentration in others. Neither is obviously safer, and families who think about it usually conclude that the sixth-form consequence outweighs the risk profile.

The useful discipline here is to write the actual certificate out. List the nine or ten subjects your child will have, with the science route named by its code and award type, and then read that list as an admissions officer or an attestation clerk would. Anything that looks thin on paper is worth reconsidering while the choice is still open, which is a Year 9 conversation and not a Year 11 one.

04

Sixth-form consequences, subject by subject

Dubai sixth forms publish science entry grades and they apply them, which makes this the part of the decision with the hardest edges. A requirement stated as a grade in Chemistry is straightforwardly satisfied by Chemistry 0620 and is a matter of departmental discretion for a Combined Science candidate. Some departments accept a strong Coordinated Sciences double award; some do not; several publish their position explicitly.

Science departments also frequently publish a mathematics requirement alongside the science one, and that catches families out more often than the science rule does. A pupil with a strong Chemistry grade and a weak Extended-tier mathematics grade is a weaker A Level Chemistry candidate than the grades suggest, because the quantitative work in Year 12 assumes the mathematics. Some departments say so; others simply decline the application.

For the IB Diploma the position is different in form and similar in substance. A pupil takes one or two sciences at Higher or Standard Level within the group structure, and Higher Level sciences assume secure Extended-tier content. A Combined Science background is a thinner base for Higher Level Chemistry than a separate Chemistry qualification is, and the first term of the course will reveal that rather than forgive it.

The only reliable action is to look the requirements up while the options decision is still open. Pick two or three sixth forms you would plausibly consider, find their published science entry grades for the courses your child might want, and note any mathematics requirement attached. That exercise takes an afternoon in Year 9 and removes almost all the uncertainty that otherwise arrives in Year 12.

05

Coordinated Sciences as the middle route

Coordinated Sciences 0654 is the route fewest families consider and the one that resolves the most dilemmas. It is a double award: more content than Combined Science, two grades reported rather than one, and typically two timetable slots rather than three. For a pupil who wants to keep a science route open without giving three option slots to science, it is the obvious candidate and it is frequently not mentioned at all.

Its strength is coverage. The content is substantially closer to the separate sciences than Combined Science is, which means a pupil arriving at a Higher Level or A Level science from this route has a smaller gap to close. Its weakness is recognition: because it is less common than either alternative, individual sixth-form departments vary in how they treat it, and a family cannot assume it will be accepted for a specific A Level course without asking.

That makes the action straightforward. If Coordinated Sciences is on the table at your child's school, ask the two or three sixth forms you would consider whether a double award at a stated grade satisfies their A Level science entry requirement. The answers will be specific and they will differ. With those answers in hand the route becomes either an excellent compromise or a route to avoid, and either way the decision is informed.

One caveat worth stating. Not every Dubai school offers all four routes, and a school with a growing secondary phase may offer two. If the route that suits your child is not available at their school, that is a fact to weigh in a school decision rather than a problem tutoring can solve. No amount of outside support changes which specification a centre enters its pupils for.

06

Which pupil suits which route

The right route is a function of three things and none of them is how hard the pupil finds science. The first is intention: what post-16 and degree routes are plausibly in view. The second is the pupil's actual profile across the three disciplines, which is frequently uneven in ways reports do not show. The third is timetable pressure, meaning what would have to be given up to accommodate three sciences.

Where a pupil is strong across all three disciplines and intends a science route, separate sciences is the answer and the conversation is short. Where a pupil has no science intentions at all and strong interests elsewhere, Combined Science is the answer and that conversation is short too. The difficult cases sit in the middle: a pupil strong in biology and chemistry and weak in physics, or a pupil with no settled intentions at fourteen, which describes most fourteen-year-olds.

For the uneven pupil, the question is whether the weak discipline is weak for a fixable reason. Physics is the usual culprit and the usual cause is mathematical rather than physical: a pupil who cannot rearrange an equation fluently will find physics hard in a way that looks like a lack of aptitude. That is testable in a single session and fixable in a term if caught in Year 9, which can change what route is realistic.

For the pupil with no settled intentions, the general principle is to keep doors open where the cost of doing so is bearable. Coordinated Sciences, or two separate sciences with one dropped, keeps more open than Combined Science at a smaller timetable cost than three. That is a defensible default, and it is better than choosing the narrowest route at fourteen on the basis that nothing has been decided.

07

Moving between routes, and when that stops being possible

  • The options deadline fixes teaching; the entry deadline fixes what is sat
  • A route change in the first term of Year 10 is usually feasible with support
  • A tier change within the same route is easier and possible later
  • Evidence that persuades a department is a timed, marked board paper

There are two deadlines and they are different. The options deadline, internal to the school, fixes what a pupil is taught from the start of Year 10. The examination entry deadline, set by the board and administered through the centre, fixes what they sit. In between there is a window where a change is sometimes possible and always awkward, because a pupil moving from Combined Science to separate sciences part-way through has missed content the class has already covered.

The practical reality is that a change in the first term of Year 10 is usually feasible with support. A change in the second year is rarely sensible even where it is administratively possible, because the content gap is substantial and the time is not. A change of tier within the same route is a different and easier matter, and it can often be made as late as the autumn of Year 11 if the department is persuaded.

What persuades a department is evidence in the form it uses. A timed Extended-tier paper from the relevant separate science, marked against the published mark scheme, showing the pupil reaching the content, is a document a head of science can read in five minutes. Parental conviction, however well founded, cannot be acted on the same way. Ask the department directly what evidence it would want and when its internal deadline falls.

Where a change is genuinely not possible, the honest plan is to work with what exists. A Combined Science pupil intending A Level Biology can prepare properly over the summer and present a case. One intending A Level Chemistry needs to have a frank conversation about whether that course is the right one, and about alternatives that lead to similar destinations. Pretending the gap is smaller than it is serves nobody and costs a term of Year 12.

08

What a tutor can and cannot do about a science route

Tutoring can do three useful things here and it cannot do the fourth. It can produce the evidence that informs or challenges a route recommendation, by having the pupil sit separate-science questions under timing and marking them properly. It can close the specific gap - usually mathematical - that made one discipline look weaker than it is. And it can prepare a pupil on a reduced route for the content a post-16 course will assume.

What it cannot do is change what a centre enters a pupil for, or make a sixth-form department accept a qualification it does not accept. Those are institutional decisions and no outside provider influences them. A page that implies otherwise is overselling, and a provider who takes money to prepare a pupil for an entry requirement they cannot meet has sold something other than teaching.

The honesty line applies here as everywhere. A tutor teaches, questions, models on a different example and marks the pupil's own work. A tutor does not write, co-write or edit any submitted piece, including a school practical write-up contributing to an internally assessed mark. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright, which is a malpractice trigger whose exposure falls on the candidate.

Nor should board material be handed over as files. Cambridge, Pearson and the IB own their syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides, and the correct behaviour is to link the official page so a family reads the current version. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership and makes no such claim. There is no UAE office or centre.

09

Coverage, permits and getting started

All four Cambridge science routes and the Pearson equivalents are covered in this set at both tiers, and a match is usually quick for the common combinations. Thinner briefs exist: Coordinated Sciences 0654 specifically, rather than the separate sciences, and mid-course reconciliation between a Cambridge route and a Pearson one. In a given week the honest answer may be that nobody suitable is free, and that is better stated than filled with a generalist.

So a Metropole science enquiry ends in one of three ways, and a family is entitled to be told which one. Either the route brief is covered, and a trial lesson goes into the diary within days. Or it is covered by a specialist teaching into Gulf Standard Time from outside the UAE, which is said out loud rather than concealed behind a local-looking telephone number. Or nobody currently holds that brief, in which case it is named as uncovered instead of handed to a generalist who last opened a Coordinated Sciences specification years ago. The third answer is the one worth trusting a provider for, because it is the one that costs them the booking. Where a tutor happens to sit makes no difference to the rate.

There is one credential a parent can genuinely verify, so verify that rather than a badge on a homepage. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through MoHRE free of charge for two years. Its eligibility list is wide enough to explain the range of people offering science help around a school of this size: teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school pupils aged fifteen to eighteen. A sixth-former who did well in the separate sciences can hold that permit entirely legitimately. Whether that person should be advising on a route decision with sixth-form consequences attached is a different question, and the permit does not answer it. Tutoring with no permit at all attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no schedule of amounts has been published, treat any figure quoted to you as invented.

Starting is small. A free trial lesson is one session, with no card details required, and the useful things to bring are the specification code and award type from the examinations officer, your child's last marked science script, and the published science entry grades from two sixth forms you would consider. With those three, the route question can usually be answered within the hour rather than carried for two years.

Where we tutor

The Motor City and Dubailand communities this page serves

A school in the Motor City corridor draws from a ring of villa and apartment communities along the Dubailand arterials. The practical local fact for a science plan is when a pupil can concentrate on a written method rather than when the bell rings.

Motor City and Green Community

Immediately around the school, so pupils are often home within twenty minutes. An early slot works, which suits practical-paper technique work where the pupil has to write methods rather than follow along.

Sports City and Victory Heights

Short, predictable runs and plenty of tuition centres, so group science classes at roughly AED 100-150 per pupil are easy to find here. Group work covers content and cannot mark one pupil's own written method.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

Villa communities with long days including sport and activities. Weekend morning sessions frequently work better here than any weekday slot, particularly for full timed science papers.

Damac Hills and Akoya

A slow approach on the Umm Suqeim Road at four in the afternoon, which makes an in-home arrangement a ninety-minute commitment to deliver sixty. Removing the car removes most of the published AED 180-500 premium.

Mudon and Remraam

Off the main arterials, where journey estimates and real journeys diverge. Pupils are generally home by about half past four, which makes an early-evening session realistic and productive.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle

Dense apartment communities and the largest source of enquiries in this corridor. Typically a tighter education budget, which is where the AED 45-150 online band finds its market; at Extended tier the gap shows in explanation marks.

Town Square and Serena

Newer and further out, with families often choosing between a science route and a creative subject on a crowded timetable. The decision is the same wherever you live; the commute only decides when the session happens.

School ecosystem

The Motor City, Sports City and Dubailand belt

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the code and the award type

Ask the examinations officer in writing which science specification your child is entered for and what kind of award it is: 0653 single, 0654 double, or the separate 0610, 0620 and 0625. A prospectus saying 'IGCSE Science' has not answered the question, and the answer determines everything else on this page.

  2. 02

Look up two sixth forms' science entry rules

Find the published science entry grades for the A Level or Diploma courses your child might plausibly want, at two or three schools you would consider, and note any mathematics requirement attached. This afternoon of work in Year 9 removes almost all the uncertainty that otherwise arrives in Year 12.

  3. 03

Test whether a weak discipline is fixable

Physics is usually the discipline that pushes a pupil towards a reduced route, and the cause is usually mathematical rather than physical. A single session of equation rearranging and unit work establishes which it is. If it is mathematical, it is fixable in a term and the route calculation changes.

  4. 04

Ask about the school's own options deadline

The internal deadline that fixes what a pupil is taught is earlier and less visible than the board's entry deadline. A route change in the first term of Year 10 is often feasible; the same change a year later rarely is. Knowing the date is what makes the difference between a decision and a regret.

  5. 05

Buy the practical component block regardless of route

Every science route examines a practical or alternative-to-practical component worth around a fifth of the grade, and it tests written method rather than laboratory skill. Six to eight sessions on it raises marks across every science the pupil takes at once, which makes it the best-value science purchase on any route.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Routes named by code and award type

Work starts from 0653, 0654, 0610, 0620 or 0625 and the tier on the entry, because those are the terms a sixth-form admissions page and an attestation authority use. A conversation about science being hard cannot answer a question about award structures.

Sixth-form consequences stated, not implied

Each post-16 science course is listed with what it normally requires at 16, where Combined Science usually sits, and the mathematics requirement families most often miss. Those are checkable facts rather than general encouragement to do more science.

The middle route brought into the conversation

Coordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award that keeps considerably more open than Combined Science at a smaller timetable cost than three separate sciences, and it is the route fewest families are told about. Whether local sixth forms accept it is a specific question with a specific answer.

The physics question tested rather than assumed

A pupil pushed towards a reduced route by weak physics is usually weak for mathematical reasons, which is testable in one session and fixable in a term when caught in Year 9. That single test sometimes changes which route is realistic.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are an India-only service. Where a brief such as Coordinated Sciences 0654 has no specialist free, that is named rather than filled with a generalist.

Honest about what tutoring cannot change

No provider influences which specification a centre enters its pupils for, or whether a sixth form accepts a qualification. Tutoring produces evidence, closes gaps and prepares for what a course assumes. Anything beyond that is overselling, and so is any claim of regulator or board approval.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the real difference between Combined Science and separate sciences at GEMS Metropole School?+

The award structure, which is what sixth forms actually read. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 is a single award: reduced content from biology, chemistry and physics reported as one grade, taking one option slot. The separate sciences - Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 - are three full qualifications reported as three grades across three slots. A requirement expressed as a grade in Chemistry is satisfied directly by 0620 and becomes a matter of departmental discretion for a Combined Science candidate, which is the difference that matters.

What is Coordinated Sciences 0654 and why has nobody mentioned it?+

It is a double award sitting between the two usual options: more content than Combined Science, two grades reported, and typically two timetable slots rather than three. It is less common than either alternative, which is probably why it gets less attention at options evening, and its content is substantially closer to the separate sciences. The catch is recognition: individual sixth-form departments vary in whether they accept it for A Level sciences, so the useful action is to ask two or three directly before choosing it.

Does Combined Science close off A Level Chemistry?+

At several Dubai sixth forms, effectively yes, and the position is usually published rather than hidden. Combined Science typically reduces the quantitative chemistry, including the mole, and the organic depth - which are precisely the areas A Level Chemistry builds on in its opening weeks. A department declining the application is not gatekeeping for its own sake; it is avoiding setting a pupil up to struggle. A Level Biology is more often negotiable with a strong Combined grade and a prepared summer, because the reduction there is more in breadth than depth.

Which sciences are most reduced on the Combined route?+

Chemistry and physics, in the areas that are most quantitative and most abstract. In chemistry that generally means the mole and organic depth; in physics, the more mathematical treatment throughout. Biology is reduced more in breadth than in depth, which is why a Combined Science pupil moving to A Level Biology usually has a smaller gap than one moving to Chemistry or Physics. The exact omissions vary by series, so read them from the live Cambridge syllabus for your child's entry rather than from any summary.

Can my child switch from Combined Science to separate sciences part-way through?+

In the first term of Year 10, usually yes with support. In the second year, rarely sensibly, even where it is administratively possible, because the content gap is substantial and the remaining time is not. A tier change within the same route is a different and easier matter and can often be made as late as the autumn of Year 11. Ask the school about its internal options deadline, which is earlier and less visible than the board's entry deadline, and ask what evidence the department would want.

Is my child's weak physics a reason to take Combined Science?+

Only after you have tested why it is weak, because the usual cause is mathematical rather than physical. A pupil who cannot rearrange an equation fluently, convert units confidently or give a sensible precision will find physics hard in a way that looks exactly like a lack of aptitude. That is testable in a single session: three Extended-tier calculations and watching what happens in the first thirty seconds. If the cause is mathematical, it is fixable in a term when caught in Year 9, and the route calculation changes substantially.

How many option slots do the different science routes take?+

Three separate sciences take three slots, Coordinated Sciences typically takes two, and Combined Science takes one. That is a real trade on a nine or ten subject timetable: what comes off is often a second language, a creative subject or a humanity. The decision is therefore not only about science, and it is worth writing out the whole prospective certificate before choosing. A list that looks thin on paper is worth reconsidering while the choice is still open, which is a Year 9 conversation.

Does the science route affect the UAE equivalency subject count?+

Potentially, through the shape of the timetable. The Ministry of Education's British-track rule requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. For a pupil with a full timetable this is comfortably met on any science route. For a thinner timetable it is arithmetic worth checking, and how a double award is counted for that purpose is a question for moe.gov.ae or the emirate attestation authority rather than for a tutoring page.

Do sixth forms also set a mathematics requirement for science courses?+

Frequently, and this catches families out more often than the science rule does. The quantitative work in Year 12 chemistry and physics assumes Extended-tier mathematics, so a pupil with a strong science grade and a weak maths grade is a weaker candidate than their grades suggest. Some Dubai departments publish a mathematics requirement explicitly alongside the science one; others simply decline the application without explaining. Ask the department directly in Year 10, because the mathematics gap is usually the cheaper of the two to close.

Is the practical paper worth preparing for on every route?+

Yes, and it is the best-value science purchase available whichever route a pupil is on. Every science route examines a practical or alternative-to-practical component worth around a fifth of the grade, and it tests written precision rather than laboratory skill: describing a method with quantities and instruments stated, identifying variables, reading scales, tabulating, plotting, interpreting and suggesting a specific improvement. Six to eight sessions on it raises marks across every science a pupil takes at once, which no amount of single-subject content work can do.

What if our school does not offer the route that suits our child?+

Then it is a fact to weigh in a school decision rather than a problem tutoring can solve, and that is worth saying plainly. A centre enters its pupils for the specifications it has chosen to teach, and no outside provider changes that. A school with a growing secondary phase may offer two of the four routes rather than all of them. Dubai's market is deep enough that the question is answerable at the point of choosing a school: KHDA counted 227 private schools in the emirate, with seven more joining the 2026-27 intake.

Can a tutor help with a school science practical write-up on any of these routes?+

A tutor can teach the skills the write-up needs and give feedback on the pupil's own draft, naming what the mark scheme wants that is missing. A tutor cannot write it, supply paragraphs for it, or edit it to completion, and no price makes that acceptable - particularly where the write-up contributes to an internally assessed mark that must represent the pupil's own work. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright, which is a malpractice risk rather than a service.

Do you send science tutors to Motor City or Arabian Ranches addresses?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service offered only in India. Tutoring for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For science that works well, because the highest-value work - practical paper methods and extended-response rewriting - is the pupil writing while the tutor marks live on a shared screen. It also means the tutor is chosen for the specification and award type rather than for living within a drivable radius.

What should we bring to a first conversation about the science route?+

Three things. The specification code and award type from the examinations officer, in writing. Your child's last marked science script, not the report grade. And the published science entry grades from two or three sixth forms you would plausibly consider, including any mathematics requirement. With those, the route question can usually be resolved within the hour rather than carried as a worry for two years. The first session is free, is one session, and requires no card details.

Settle the code, the award and two entry requirements

Email the examinations officer and ask which science specification your child is entered for, what kind of award it is, and at which tier. Then look up the published science entry grades at two sixth forms you would consider, including any mathematics requirement attached. Those two pieces of information answer most of what families worry about in this area, and both are free. If the weak discipline is physics, test whether the cause is mathematical before accepting a reduced route. A free trial lesson is one session with no card details required. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
