IB Extended Essay Help in Dubai

IB extended essay help in Dubai, one-to-one over live video, built around the mark scheme rather than around writing tips. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper marked out of 34 across five criteria, and twelve of those marks sit in a single criterion most Dubai candidates never read. Sessions work on the research question, the argument and the reflections the student produces themselves.

  • Marks broken down criterion by criterion, A through E
  • The TOK and EE points matrix explained with the failing condition
  • Supervisor hours and the RPPF covered before the first draft

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The Extended Essay is marked on argument, not on effort

Every full Diploma candidate submits an Extended Essay: an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words on a question of their own choosing, registered in one of the Diploma subjects or as a World Studies essay. It is marked out of 34 by an external examiner, and the grade it earns combines with the Theory of Knowledge grade in a points matrix that can add up to three points to the Diploma total. Those three points decide university offers more often than any single subject grade does.

What catches Dubai candidates out is the distribution of those 34 marks. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries twelve of them, more than a third of the paper, and it rewards analysis, evaluation and reasoned argument rather than coverage. Criteria A and B, focus and method and knowledge and understanding, carry six each. Criterion D, presentation, carries four. Criterion E, engagement, carries six and is marked entirely from the reflections the student submits on a separate form. A candidate who spends four months reading and three weeks writing has optimised for B and starved C.

The other structural feature families rarely know about is how little supervision the school is permitted to give. A supervisor's total contribution is expected to be a handful of hours across the whole project, spread across three mandatory reflection sessions, the last of which is the viva voce after submission. That is not a school being unhelpful. It is the IB protecting the independence the criteria reward. The consequence is that a candidate who does not know what criterion C wants will usually not be told in time.

This is where outside mentoring has a legitimate and narrow role. A tutor can teach a candidate how an argument is evaluated, stress-test a research question before four months are committed to it, explain what a reflection has to contain to earn engagement marks, and read a finished draft against each criterion and report where it sits. All of that is support of the kind the IB expects a student to seek and acknowledge. None of it involves anyone else producing the paper.

That boundary is not negotiable here. The Extended Essay carries an academic honesty declaration from the candidate and a corresponding one from the supervisor, and the viva voce exists partly so a supervisor can confirm the work is the candidate's own. Services that sell finished Extended Essays operate openly in this market. Buying one risks the entire Diploma, and the risk sits with the student. IB Gram declines that work.

Delivery for UAE families is online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared screen. For a research paper that is the natural format: the candidate shares the document, the tutor annotates it live against the criteria, and the annotated file stays with the student. Dubai families also get the tutor who has mentored that subject before rather than the one who can reach Jumeirah by six, which for a subject like Philosophy or Visual Arts is the difference between useful mentoring and none.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay belongs to the Diploma, but the habits it tests are built earlier and the family questions differ by stage. Here is where extended independent writing sits across the IB continuum, with what each stage means in a Dubai school.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay is one of the three core elements alongside Theory of Knowledge and CAS. It is registered in a subject, supervised in school, submitted to an external examiner and graded A to E. The grade pairs with the TOK grade in the points matrix, and the combination of E grades in both is a failing condition for the Diploma rather than simply a low score.

Dubai Diploma cohorts are small, which means a school may have one Economics specialist available to supervise every Economics Extended Essay in the year group. Candidates registering in a subject the school has thin staffing in often get a supervisor from a neighbouring department, and that is the case where outside subject mentoring changes the outcome most.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP Personal Project in the final year is the rehearsal: a self-directed project with a goal, a process journal and a report, assessed against three criteria and externally moderated. Students who took the process journal seriously arrive at the Extended Essay already able to write a reflection that says something.

The Dubai schools running a full continuum put their Personal Project exhibition on in the spring, and it is the single best predictor of how a student will handle an Extended Essay two years later. Families whose children joined at Year 12 from an IGCSE stream should expect the research-question stage to take longer, because nothing in IGCSE asks for one.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

CP candidates do not submit an Extended Essay. The equivalent core element is the reflective project, which examines an ethical dilemma arising from the career-related study and is internally assessed with external moderation. It is shorter and differently structured, and experience of one does not transfer cleanly to the other.

Only a small number of Dubai schools offer the CP, so families comparing it with the Diploma should confirm directly with the school which core components apply. If a child is moving between a CP and a DP cohort mid-course, the core requirements change, and that is a question for the coordinator rather than for a tutoring site.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An Extended Essay is registered in a subject, and the subject shapes what a strong essay looks like. These are the registrations Dubai candidates choose most, with the specific trap each one sets.

Economics

SL or HL candidates may register

Popular because candidates feel fluent in the theory. The trap is a question answerable from commentary rather than data: an essay that explains elasticity well and never tests a claim against evidence scores on knowledge and starves critical thinking, which is the twelve-mark criterion.

Business Management

SL or HL candidates may register

Attractive in Dubai because real organisations are accessible. The trap is the research question that depends on internal data no company will release, leaving a candidate four months in with an argument they cannot evidence.

Chemistry

SL or HL candidates may register

A strong choice where laboratory access exists, and a weak one where it does not. Experimental essays need repeat measurement and real uncertainty treatment; a literature-based chemistry essay must find a genuine analytical angle rather than summarising the state of a field.

Biology

SL or HL candidates may register

The commonest failure is scale. A question about an ecosystem or a population needs more data than a candidate can collect, and the honest version narrows to something measurable, which examiners reward rather than penalise.

Physics

SL or HL candidates may register

Essays here divide into experimental and theoretical, and the theoretical route is harder than it looks because it needs mathematics the candidate can actually deploy. Marks concentrate on whether the analysis supports the conclusion, not on the elegance of the apparatus.

English A: Literature

SL or HL candidates may register

The trap is biography and plot. A literature essay earns critical thinking marks through close reading of the text and an argument about it, and loses them to context-heavy writing that could have been produced without reading the work closely.

History

SL or HL candidates may register

Source availability decides the grade. A question about an event with accessible primary and secondary material lets a candidate weigh evidence; a question about something poorly documented forces narrative, and narrative does not score criterion C.

Psychology

SL or HL candidates may register

Candidates often propose original studies with ethical problems they cannot solve at school age. A literature-based essay evaluating competing explanations of a phenomenon is both permissible and better suited to the criteria.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary registration

A global issue examined through two Diploma subjects. It scores well when both subject lenses genuinely do work and badly when one is decorative, which is the single most common fault in this registration.

Mathematics

SL or HL candidates may register

Rare and rewarding for the right candidate. The essay must do mathematics rather than describe it, and the level must suit the course, which makes topic choice far more consequential here than in the essay-based subjects.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay mentoring works in short blocks pinned to the project's real decision points, because a candidate who gets criterion advice with nothing written has nowhere to put it and a candidate who gets it after submission has nowhere to put it either.

Research-question stress test

Two sessions before any reading is committed. The work is pressure-testing a proposed question against criterion A and criterion C: can it be answered in 4,000 words, is the evidence obtainable, and does answering it require an argument or only a summary. Most Extended Essays that end up at grade D or E were decided here and nowhere else.

  • Checks the question can be answered in the word limit
  • Confirms the evidence or data actually exists and is reachable
  • Tests whether the question forces analysis or permits description
  • Ends with the candidate's own written question and sub-questions

Criterion review of the candidate's draft

The candidate submits the draft they wrote. The tutor reads it against each of the five criteria and reports the band it currently sits in, with the specific question an examiner would ask at each one. The candidate revises. No sentences are supplied and no paragraph is rewritten, so the file submitted is the file the candidate typed.

  • A band position and a reason for each of criteria A to E
  • Critical-thinking gaps identified paragraph by paragraph
  • Citation, formatting and word-count compliance checked
  • Revision left entirely with the candidate

Reflections and viva voce preparation

Criterion E is six marks awarded on the reflection form alone, and it is the criterion candidates most often leave to the last evening. A session on it covers what a reflection has to show, how the three mandatory reflection sessions should be used, and what kind of questions a supervisor asks in the viva voce after submission.

  • What the reflection form rewards and what it does not
  • Turning process decisions into evidence of engagement
  • Using the three supervisor reflection sessions properly
  • Practising the questions a viva voce actually asks

Subject-knowledge block where the essay has exposed a gap

Sometimes a draft is weak because the candidate does not yet understand the subject material well enough to argue about it. Criterion coaching cannot fix that. In those cases the honest recommendation is a short block of ordinary subject teaching first, and we will say so rather than billing hours against the essay.

  • Diagnoses whether the problem is the essay or the subject
  • Short targeted subject block rather than open-ended tutoring
  • Returns to criterion work once the gap is closed
  • Said plainly, even when it means fewer booked sessions

01

What Extended Essay help means, and what it cannot mean

  • Mentoring against criteria, not proofreading or source-finding
  • External examiner, no chance to explain anything in person
  • School supervision is deliberately limited to a few hours
  • The three moments worth paying for: question, full draft, reflections

The literal answer first. IB extended essay help in Dubai, done properly, is mentoring a candidate through a 4,000-word independent research paper against five published criteria, inside a school-set deadline, while the paper remains entirely the candidate's work. It is not writing support in the sense of proofreading, and it is not research assistance in the sense of finding the sources. It is teaching a candidate to construct and evaluate an argument, and then reading what they produced and saying where it sits.

Three things make the Extended Essay different from every other piece of work a Diploma candidate does. It is longer than anything else they will write. It is marked by an external examiner who has never met them, so nothing can be explained in person except in the viva voce. And the school is permitted only a few hours of supervision across the whole project, so the usual safety net of a teacher noticing a problem early is largely absent by design.

Those three features together tell you where help is worth paying for. Before the question is fixed, because a bad question cannot be rescued later. At the point there is a complete draft, because that is the last moment structural change is cheap. And on the reflection form, because six marks sit there and almost nobody prepares for them. Hours spent anywhere else are usually better spent on the subject itself.

What help cannot mean is anybody else producing any part of the paper. The candidate signs a declaration that the work is their own; the supervisor signs one too; the viva voce exists in part to test that. Services in this market sell completed Extended Essays, and a candidate who submits one is risking the Diploma rather than a grade. We decline that work and say why when asked.

02

The five criteria and where the 34 marks actually sit

Almost no page competing for this query names a single Extended Essay criterion, which is the reason so many Dubai candidates write a well-researched essay that scores a C. The marks are not distributed the way effort naturally distributes. Criterion C alone carries more weight than criteria A and B combined, and criterion E, which most candidates treat as paperwork, carries more than criterion D, which most candidates spend their last week on.

Read the table as a budget. If a candidate has twenty hours left, the question to ask is which criterion those hours can move. Twelve marks of critical thinking can usually be moved, because critical thinking lives in the structure of the argument and in whether claims are evaluated rather than asserted. Four marks of presentation can be secured in an evening. Six marks of engagement can be won by writing reflections that describe real decisions instead of generic enthusiasm.

The second thing the table shows is why reading more does not raise a grade past a point. Knowledge and understanding is capped at six marks. A candidate who has read forty sources and a candidate who has read fifteen and used them well score the same on B, and the second candidate has twenty-five sources' worth of time left to spend on C. That calculation is uncomfortable and it is the single most useful thing a mentor can teach.

Treat the mark allocations here as the structure to plan against and confirm the current figures in the subject-specific Extended Essay guidance your child's supervisor is working from. The IB publishes the authoritative version and revises it on a cycle. Where this page and the official guidance differ, the guidance is right.

DPresentation4Structure, layout and referencing that follow conventionMissing contents page, inconsistent citation style

03

The EE and TOK matrix, and the failing condition nobody mentions

The Extended Essay grade does not stand alone. It is combined with the Theory of Knowledge grade in a matrix that awards between zero and three points towards the Diploma total of 45. Three points is the difference between a conditional offer met and missed at a great many universities, and it is earned by two pieces of work that together take less time than one Diploma subject.

The matrix rewards consistency. Two strong grades produce the maximum; one strong and one weak produces less than families expect; and the combination of the lowest grade in both components is a failing condition for the Diploma, which means the candidate does not receive the Diploma regardless of their subject points. That last fact is the single most important sentence on this page for a candidate who is considering treating either core component as optional.

The practical reading for a Dubai family is that the core should be planned as one thing, not two. A candidate who is strong in TOK has a clear incentive to lift the Extended Essay from a C to a B, because the matrix pays for that move. A candidate struggling in both needs to know that the risk is not two low grades but a failing condition, and that it is a risk the school's TOK and EE coordinators can help manage if told early.

Confirm the exact point values in the current Diploma documentation, because the matrix has been revised historically and the authoritative version is the IB's own. The structure below is the shape of the thing: consistent strength pays, inconsistency costs, and the bottom-left corner is where a Diploma is lost.

HOW THE EE AND TOK GRADES COMBINE - STRUCTURE OF THE CORE POINTS MATRIX

04

Supervisor hours, the three reflection sessions and the viva voce

  • Supervision is a few hours total, not a weekly arrangement
  • Three mandatory reflection sessions, the last after submission
  • Session one fixes the question; session two catches the fatal problem
  • Criterion E is marked from the reflection form, written as you go
  • The viva voce confirms the work is the candidate's own

Families often assume the school will carry the Extended Essay and are surprised to learn how little supervision the IB intends. A supervisor's total input across the project is measured in a small number of hours, and it is structured around three mandatory reflection sessions: one at the start when the question is being formed, one at the middle when the research is underway, and one after submission, the viva voce.

Each of those sessions has a purpose and candidates waste them routinely. The first should produce a viable question and a method, and a candidate who arrives without having read anything will leave with a question nobody has tested. The second should catch the problem that makes an essay unscoreable, usually that the evidence does not exist or the question has quietly changed. The viva voce is after the fact and cannot change the paper, but it matters: it is where the supervisor forms the view that goes into their report and confirms the work is the candidate's own.

Between those sessions the candidate is on their own by design, because criterion E rewards exactly that independence. The IB is not trying to leave students unsupported; it is trying to make the grade mean something about the student rather than about the school. The practical consequence for a Dubai family is that the gaps between reflection sessions are the gaps a mentor can legitimately occupy, teaching method and questioning argument without producing anything.

One practical note on documentation. The reflections the candidate writes on the official form are what criterion E is marked from, and they are written across the project rather than at the end. A candidate who writes all three reflections the night before submission will produce six marks' worth of generalities. Writing each one within a day of the relevant supervisor session is the cheapest mark-earning habit in the whole Diploma core.

05

Choosing a question that can actually score

  • Write three sub-questions and locate the evidence for each
  • If summary answers the question, criterion C is capped
  • Economics: data, not commentary. Business: obtainable evidence only
  • Sciences: check the laboratory can run the trials you need
  • World Studies: both subjects must do real analytical work

The research question is the most consequential decision in the project and it is usually made in a week. A question that is too broad forces description, which caps criterion C. A question that is too narrow runs out of material at 2,000 words. A question that depends on data nobody will release strands the candidate in February with nothing to argue from. All three faults are visible to anyone who has mentored an Extended Essay before, and invisible to a candidate choosing in good faith.

The test that works is simple. Write the question, then write the three sub-questions you would have to answer to answer it, then ask what evidence each sub-question needs and where it is. If any sub-question's evidence cannot be named and located, the question is not yet viable. If the three sub-questions could all be answered by summarising what is already known, the question will not reach criterion C's upper bands no matter how well it is written.

Subject choice interacts with this. In Dubai the popular registrations are Economics, Business Management and the sciences, and each has a characteristic failure. Economics tempts candidates into commentary without data. Business Management tempts them into questions requiring internal company information. The sciences tempt them into experiments the school laboratory cannot actually run across the required number of trials. Knowing the characteristic failure of the registration is most of the defence against it.

World Studies deserves its own note because Dubai candidates choose it often and it is harder than it looks. It requires a global issue examined through two Diploma subjects, with both subjects doing genuine analytical work. An essay where the second subject appears in one paragraph as context is a single-subject essay registered in the wrong category, and examiners mark it as what it is.

06

Where Dubai Extended Essay candidates lose the most marks

  • Criterion C: reporting the literature instead of adjudicating it
  • Criterion A: a question that no longer matches the essay written
  • Criterion E: reflections about feelings rather than decisions
  • Criterion D: citation, contents page and word-count carelessness
  • Fix D first if time is short; it is the most reliable conversion

The pattern across drafts from Dubai schools is consistent and it is not about ability. The largest single loss is in criterion C, and it takes the form of an essay that reports the literature accurately and never adjudicates between parts of it. A candidate writes what three economists say about a policy and then concludes that it is complex. The missing move is evaluation: which account explains the evidence better, and why, and what the weaker account gets right anyway.

The second loss is criterion A, where a candidate's question drifted during research and the essay now answers something adjacent to the question on the title page. This is almost always fixable, because the fix is to rewrite the question to match the essay rather than the essay to match the question, and candidates rarely realise that is allowed while the project is still open.

The third is criterion E, where the reflection form carries six marks and is completed as an afterthought. Reflections that earn marks describe decisions: a method abandoned and why, a source that changed the direction, a point where the candidate realised the question was wrong. Reflections that earn nothing describe feelings about the topic. The difference is entirely a matter of what the candidate chose to write down, and it costs nothing to get right.

A fourth, smaller loss is presentation, and it is pure carelessness: an inconsistent citation style, a missing contents page, appendices referenced but absent, or a word count that includes material the guidance excludes. Four marks is more than a tenth of the paper, and this is an evening's work. Candidates who are short of time should secure criterion D first, because it is the only criterion where effort converts to marks at a fixed rate.

07

The Extended Essay calendar, counted backwards from submission

Extended Essay deadlines are set by the school, not by the IB, and they fall earlier than families plan for because the school needs time for the viva voce, the supervisor's report and the upload. For a candidate sitting the May session, the practical shape of the project is that it starts in the first year and finishes in the first term of the second year, with the whole of the second half of the second year reserved for examination preparation.

Counting backwards is the only way to see the real pressure points. The summer break between the two Diploma years sits in the middle of the project, and it is where most of the reading has to happen, because term time in the second year belongs to six subjects and the other core components. A candidate who arrives in September of the second year without a substantial draft is behind in a way that is hard to recover from while also sitting mock examinations.

The table below uses relative milestones rather than dates, deliberately. Every Dubai school sets its own internal calendar, and IB session dates should be read from the IB's own published information or confirmed with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from any tutoring page. Ask for the school's EE deadline list in the first term of DP1 and plan the summer around it.

Two Dubai-specific points belong on that plan. Travel over the long summer is near-universal in this city, which means the reading phase has to survive a change of country and often of time zone, so sources need to be accessible rather than only in the school library. And in years when Ramadan falls across the spring term, the working rhythm of the household changes for a month, which is a month that should not be assumed productive for extended writing.

What Extended Essay mentoring costs in Dubai, and why we deliver it online

Most pages competing for this query publish no price, and the two that do quote in US dollars. Here are the Dubai market figures in dirhams, attributed to whoever published them, read in October 2026. These describe the market rather than an IB Gram price list, and an Extended Essay block is a project cost rather than a monthly subscription, which changes how it should be budgeted.

Think in blocks. A full mentoring arrangement for an Extended Essay is typically six to ten sessions across a year: two on the question, two or three during the research phase, one or two criterion reviews of the candidate's own draft, and one on reflections and viva voce preparation. At the market's mid-range hourly figures that is a few thousand dirhams spread across twelve months, which is a different proposition from the AED 1,000-2,000 a month Bestimate attributes to specialist exam-year weekly tutoring.

Published hourly rates in this market start around AED 45-65 at the budget online end where EdFlik advertises, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate puts specialist IB and IGCSE support at AED 200-450 and above, in-home visits at AED 180-350, and independent home tutors up to AED 500 once travel is priced in. BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium examiner-branded work. For Extended Essay mentoring the relevant band is the specialist one, because the skill being bought is subject-specific research supervision.

IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service we run only in India. For Extended Essay work that is not a limitation. The entire project lives in a document, and a shared screen with live annotation is a better working surface than two people and one laptop. It also means the candidate gets a mentor who has supervised essays in their registered subject rather than one who lives within driving distance of their community, which for Philosophy, Visual Arts or a second language is frequently the difference between real mentoring and none at all.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Extended Essay mentoring is booked from across Dubai, and the pattern of subjects differs by community because the school mix does. These are the areas we hear from most, with what the local pattern looks like.

Al Barsha South and Al Sufouh

Full-continuum IB schools concentrated within a few kilometres. Candidates here usually arrive with a Personal Project behind them and a workable reflection habit, so mentoring concentrates on research questions and criterion C.

Emirates Hills and The Springs

Established Diploma provision alongside British schools. A recurring case is a candidate who entered DP1 from an IGCSE stream and has never written a research question, which lengthens the first stage considerably.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Large continuum schools with strong Economics and Business Management registrations. Supervisor availability in those two departments is the practical constraint families mention most.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Long-standing continuum schools with families who stay from primary. Candidates here register across a wider spread of subjects, including languages, which is where school supervision is thinnest.

Sobha Hartland and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Newer schools with young Diploma cohorts. First or second EE cycles mean fewer internal exemplars for candidates to look at, which makes external criterion coaching more valuable than it would be in an older school.

Dubai Festival City and Al Jaddaf

Diploma provision on the Creek side. Session slots after seven in the evening fill first here, because the homeward commute compresses the usable study window.

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah

A coastal mix of British and IB provision. Dual-track households are common, with one child writing an Extended Essay while a sibling works through IGCSE coursework.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Estate

Villa communities feeding established Diploma schools. Weekend morning sessions are heavily requested here, which suits extended-writing work better than a tired weekday hour does.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Al Sheif

The densest IB cluster in the emirate, with several schools running the full continuum. Extended Essay registrations from this cluster skew towards the sciences and Economics, and candidates generally arrive fluent in criterion language from the MYP.

  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Bloom World Academy
  • GEMS Wellington International School

Nad Al Sheba, Mirdif, Festival City and Al Jaddaf

Continuum and Diploma schools serving the eastern and southern communities. Supervisor load is the recurring theme from this cluster, particularly in Economics and Business Management where registrations cluster.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Uptown International School
  • Deira International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Emirates Hills, Arabian Ranches and Sobha Hartland

Established and new Diploma provision side by side, which produces two different kinds of enquiry: transition cases from British streams, and candidates in young cohorts with no internal exemplars to study.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • JESS Arabian Ranches
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School

School names appear here only to describe the Dubai IB landscape these candidates come from; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is claimed or implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the question and the deadline

Which Diploma subject the essay is registered in, the current wording of the research question, and the school's internal deadline. If a supervisor has already given written comments or the candidate has a partial draft, send those. Those three things tell us whether this is a question problem, an argument problem or a reflections problem.

  2. 02

We match a mentor who has supervised that registration

Not a generalist in the subject area. An Economics Extended Essay needs someone who has seen candidates fail criterion C by writing commentary; a Chemistry essay needs someone who knows what a school laboratory can realistically deliver. Where no specialist is free at your preferred hour we tell you rather than substituting someone close enough.

  3. 03

A free trial session on the real question

The first session uses the candidate's own question and reading, not a sample. It ends with an honest view of whether the question is viable, what criterion C will demand of it, and how much of the project is already secure. If that hour tells you nothing new, there is no reason to book a second.

  4. 04

A defined block across the project, not a weekly standing order

Six to ten sessions clustered at the decision points usually covers an Extended Essay end to end. We will say when the block is finished. Where the real problem turns out to be subject knowledge rather than essay craft, we will recommend a short subject block instead and explain why.

  5. 05

Written criterion notes the candidate acts on alone

After a draft review the candidate receives notes organised by criterion letter, each with the question an examiner would ask. The revision is entirely theirs. No sentence is supplied and no paragraph is rewritten, so the essay submitted to school, and the honesty declaration signed with it, are both true.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We teach the mark scheme, not essay-writing generally

The Extended Essay is 34 marks across five named criteria with twelve of them in critical thinking. Sessions are organised around those letters, because that is what the examiner uses. Generic advice about structure and clarity is what candidates already have and is not what moves a grade from C to B.

The core is planned as one thing

The EE and TOK grades combine in a points matrix worth up to three Diploma points, and the lowest grade in both is a failing condition. We talk about both components together, because a family planning them separately is leaving the most leverage in the Diploma unused.

The honesty boundary is written down

What a mentor may and may not do is set out on this page so you can hold us to it. Completed Extended Essays are sold openly in this market; we decline that work, and we explain to any family that asks exactly what the candidate would be declaring if they submitted one.

AED figures with a source and a date

Every rate quoted here is attributed to the provider that published it and dated to when it was read. None of them is our price. A page a parent can check beats a page that sounds confident.

Subject mentors, not the nearest available tutor

Because delivery is online, the mentor is chosen for having supervised essays in that registration. In a city where the in-home market prices travel into every hour, that is the clearest advantage the format has for a project this specialised.

Honest about timing

Three weeks before a deadline the realistic gains are presentation, reflections and citation discipline, not a restructured argument. We will say what is recoverable and what is not, including when the answer is that the question should have changed six months ago.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does the Extended Essay have to reach 4,000 words to score well?+

No. Four thousand words is an upper limit, not a target, and examiners are instructed to stop reading at the limit, which means anything beyond it is simply lost rather than penalised separately. A tightly argued 3,600-word essay routinely outscores a padded 4,000-word one because criterion C rewards evaluation density rather than length. What matters is that every one of the five criteria is addressed within the limit. Candidates who find themselves at 4,600 words should cut description and summary first, since that material is contributing least to the mark.

How many Diploma points can the Extended Essay add to my child's total?+

The Extended Essay does not carry points on its own. Its grade combines with the Theory of Knowledge grade in a core points matrix that awards up to three points towards the Diploma total of 45. Consistency pays: two strong grades reach the maximum, while one strong and one weak grade produce noticeably less than families expect. Three points is often the gap between meeting and missing a conditional university offer, which makes the core the best-value work in the Diploma per hour invested. Confirm the current matrix values with your child's Diploma coordinator.

Can a candidate fail the whole Diploma because of the Extended Essay?+

Yes, in one specific circumstance. The lowest grade in both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together constitutes a failing condition for the Diploma, meaning the certificate is not awarded regardless of how strong the six subject grades are. That is the single most important reason to treat neither core component as optional. It also means a candidate who is struggling with both should tell their coordinator early, while there is still time for the school to intervene, rather than hoping subject points will compensate.

How many hours of supervision is my child's school allowed to give?+

A small number across the entire project, structured around three mandatory reflection sessions rather than ongoing weekly meetings. The first forms the question and method, the second checks progress and catches fatal problems, and the third is the viva voce after submission. This is deliberate: criterion E awards six marks for intellectual initiative, so the IB limits supervision to keep the grade meaningful. Families who expect school-led project management are usually disappointed, and the gap between reflection sessions is where external mentoring can legitimately help.

What is the reflection form and does it carry marks of its own?+

It is the official document on which the candidate records their reflections at each stage of the project, and criterion E, worth six of the 34 marks, is assessed substantially from it. Reflections that earn marks describe decisions: a method abandoned, a source that redirected the argument, a moment the question was found to be wrong. Reflections that earn nothing describe how interesting the topic was. The form should be written across the project within a day or so of each supervisor session, never in one sitting at the end.

What is the viva voce and should my child prepare for it?+

It is the third and final reflection session, held with the supervisor after the essay has been submitted. It cannot change the paper, but it matters in two ways: it informs the supervisor's report, and it is one of the mechanisms by which the school satisfies itself that the work is genuinely the candidate's own. Preparation is light but worth doing. A candidate should be able to explain why they chose the question, what they would do differently, what the hardest decision was, and what the essay's weakest point is.

Which subject should my child register their Extended Essay in?+

The one where they can find a question that forces analysis and has reachable evidence, which is not always their strongest subject. A candidate with a strong Economics grade may still struggle with an Economics essay if the only questions they can think of are answerable by commentary. Check two things before registering: whether the school has a supervisor with real knowledge of that subject, and whether the specific question has evidence the candidate can actually obtain. Those two practical constraints matter more than enthusiasm for the discipline.

Is a World Studies Extended Essay a harder route to a good grade?+

It is not inherently harder, but it fails in a particular way that single-subject essays do not. World Studies requires a global issue examined through two Diploma subjects, with both subjects doing genuine analytical work. The common fault is an essay that is really a single-subject piece with a second discipline appearing once as context, and examiners mark it as the single-subject essay it is. Candidates who can honestly describe what each subject lens contributes to the argument do well; candidates who chose it to seem ambitious usually do not.

Can a private tutor act as my child's Extended Essay supervisor?+

No. The supervisor must be a teacher at the school where the candidate is registered, because the role involves formal reflection sessions, the viva voce and a supervisor declaration and report that go to the IB. A tutor works alongside that arrangement, not instead of it. What a tutor can legitimately do is teach method, stress-test the research question, explain what each criterion rewards, and read a draft and report where it sits. The school supervisor relationship remains the official one throughout.

What does criterion C actually reward, in practical terms?+

Twelve of the 34 marks go to critical thinking, which means analysis, evaluation and the construction of a tested argument. In practice an essay earns criterion C by adjudicating: showing that one account explains the evidence better than another and saying why, acknowledging what the weaker account still gets right, and recognising the limits of the essay's own conclusion. An essay that accurately reports what several authorities say and then concludes the matter is complex has described rather than evaluated, and that single habit accounts for more lost Extended Essay marks than any other.

When should an Extended Essay realistically be finished?+

Before the second Diploma year's examination preparation begins in earnest, which in practice means a complete draft by the start of that year and a finished essay in its first term. Schools set their own internal deadlines and they sit earlier than families expect, because the school needs time for the viva voce, the supervisor report and the upload. The summer between the two years is where most of the reading has to happen. A candidate arriving in September with no substantial draft is behind in a way that is painful to recover while sitting mocks.

Can my child change the research question partway through?+

Yes, and more candidates should. Questions drift during research, and an essay that answers something slightly different from its title page loses marks on criterion A for no good reason. While the project is open, the cheaper fix is almost always to rewrite the question so it matches the essay the evidence actually supports, rather than to force the essay back towards a question that turned out to be unanswerable. Discuss it at the second reflection session; that is partly what the session exists for.

What does Extended Essay mentoring cost for a Dubai family?+

Published market rates in Dubai, read in October 2026, run from about AED 45-65 at the budget online end to AED 650 for premium examiner-branded providers, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200, TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate putting specialist IB and IGCSE support at AED 200-450 and above. Those are the market's figures, not ours. For an Extended Essay the realistic shape is six to ten sessions spread across a year rather than weekly hours, so budget it as a project rather than a monthly commitment.

Does an Extended Essay need original primary research?+

Not in most subjects. A literature-based essay that evaluates competing explanations can score at the top of every criterion, and in some registrations it is the safer route. Where primary research is appropriate, it has to be feasible: a science experiment the school laboratory can run for the required number of trials, a survey with a defensible sample, or interviews the candidate can actually obtain. Original data collected badly scores worse than secondary evidence used well, because criterion C marks the quality of the reasoning rather than the novelty of the source.

My child's draft came back from the supervisor with very few comments. What now?+

That is common and not necessarily a bad sign, because supervision is deliberately limited and a supervisor who writes little may simply be working within the permitted scope. The useful response is for the candidate to mark their own draft once per criterion, in the criterion's own words, and list what the next band asks for at each letter. That exercise usually produces a shorter and more accurate job list than a set of comments would, and it is the point where an external criterion review adds the most.

Start by testing the question

If your child's Extended Essay is still at the question stage, that is the hour worth spending, because every later problem traces back to it. If there is already a full draft, the useful next step is a criterion review that reports where each of the five letters currently sits and what the next band asks for. Either way the trial session uses your child's own work rather than a sample, runs on Gulf Standard Time over live video, and ends with a straight answer about what is realistically recoverable in the time left. If the honest answer is that the essay is in better shape than the household thinks, we will say that too.
