IB Private Tutor in Dubai: Permits, Models and What to Ask

Hiring an IB private tutor in Dubai is a regulated transaction, and almost nothing in this market tells you so. Private tuition here runs on a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. This page sets out who may legally tutor, how a parent verifies it, what the six provider models actually charge in dirhams, and the five questions worth asking before any money moves. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • The MoHRE permit explained with its resolution number and validity
  • Six provider models compared with published AED rates and sources
  • Five verification questions a parent can ask in one email
  • No regulator or examination board accreditation claimed anywhere

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A regulated transaction nobody describes as one

Private tutoring in the UAE is not an informal arrangement between consenting adults. It runs on a work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. Of the sixty-odd competitor pages examined for this project, one touched licensing at all, in a single subheading.

The permit itself is unusually unobtrusive. It is granted free of charge for two years. The ministry's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school pupils aged 15 to 18, and university students.

That breadth explains the shape of this market. A university student charging AED 60 an hour and a Diploma specialist charging AED 400 are both operating within the same permit framework, which means the permit tells a parent that the arrangement is lawful and nothing whatsoever about whether the tutor has taught Higher Level Chemistry. Those are two separate checks, and most families make neither.

There is a second licence that gets confused with the first, and the confusion is commercially convenient for some providers. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained after initial approval, with a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. That is a licence for premises. It is not a badge that a tutoring platform can borrow, and the phrase to be most sceptical of in this market is any tutor described as approved by a regulator.

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. It has no premises in the UAE. Teaching for every UAE family is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. The rest of this page is what that means in practice, what the alternatives cost, and how to check any of it. The verification work is genuinely small: two questions in one email, asked of anyone from any source, settle most of what a parent needs to know before money moves. The reason so few families ask them is that nothing in this market suggests there is anything to ask about.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The permit framework applies identically across every programme, but what a parent is buying changes as the stakes rise. Each note below describes what due diligence is proportionate at that stage.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

At primary level the permit question matters more than the specialism question, because the teaching itself is within reach of many competent people and the safeguarding considerations are at their highest. A parent should ask about the permit, about who else is present during a session, and about what records are kept, before asking about pedagogy.

Dubai primary pupils also carry the mandatory UAE subjects, and KHDA requires schools to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects. That requirement sits on schools rather than on private tutors, so a parent engaging support in those subjects should ask directly about the tutor's own qualifications.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The middle years are where families most often engage a tutor through an informal recommendation, and where the fewest questions get asked. The proportionate check is the permit, the subject experience and a written note of what each session covered. Criterion-referenced marking out of 8 is specific enough that a tutor either knows the descriptors or does not.

Dubai schools frequently switch from the Middle Years Programme to IGCSE at Year 10, and a tutor engaged for one may be asked to continue into the other. A parent should confirm explicitly that the tutor has taught the new specification, rather than assuming continuity, because the assessment cultures are genuinely different.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Highest stakes, highest prices, and the stage where verification matters most. A Diploma candidate's coursework carries roughly a fifth of each subject grade and is subject to academic-honesty rules whose consequences fall on the candidate. Any tutor offering to produce part of a submission should be declined and reported to the school, whatever their permit status.

Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session, so demand for specialists peaks between February and April and the market is at its least discriminating in exactly that window. Families who verify in October face a buyer's market; families who verify in March often skip the checks entirely.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A thin market with few experienced providers, which raises the risk of paying specialist rates for general support. The reflective project has published criteria, so a usable verification question is to ask a prospective tutor to describe how the criteria differ from the Extended Essay criteria. A vague answer settles it.

Because few Dubai schools license the programme, a family may find that the only available support is from outside the emirate. That is lawful and normal where teaching is delivered over live video, and it is worth preferring an honest non-local specialist to a local generalist describing themselves as experienced.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Verification is easier when the question is specific. For each subject below there is a question whose answer separates someone who has taught the level from someone who has read about it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Ask where a candidate must show arrows originating from in an organic mechanism, and what a Paper 2 answer loses without state symbols. A tutor who has marked the subject answers in one sentence. The investigation question to ask is how many data points they would consider sufficient to evaluate a trend.

Physics

HL and SL

Ask how they would teach the uncertainty section of the data analysis paper, since that is the part most rarely taught in class and most responsive to coaching. Ask also what distinguishes an explain answer from a describe answer in the mark scheme.

Biology

HL and SL

Ask which command terms cap an answer and how they would stop a candidate writing a discuss answer to an outline question. On coursework, ask what level of replication they would require before accepting a conclusion as supportable.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Ask how they would diagnose calculator dependence from a pair of Paper 1 and Paper 2 scripts, and how they approach the generalisation step in the Higher Level extended investigation paper. Both questions require having taught the course rather than the maths.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Ask what a candidate must add after calculating a correlation coefficient to earn the final mark, and which conditions they check before accepting a statistical test. Interpretation in context is where this course's marks live.

Economics

HL and SL

Ask how diagram marks are earned and lost, and what the three-commentary portfolio rules require in terms of syllabus coverage and article age. Those rules are specific and a tutor either knows them or has not supervised the component.

Business Management

HL and SL

Ask what they do with the pre-released case study and when they would start on it. A tutor who begins in the spring has not run the subject before; the preparation window is known months ahead and is the whole advantage of the component.

Psychology

HL and SL

Ask what four facts they expect a candidate to hold for each named study, and how they handle the ethical considerations section of the experimental write-up. Both are concrete and both expose a generalist quickly.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Ask what makes an essay comparative rather than two analyses in sequence, and how long a line of inquiry for the Higher Level essay should be before it is workable. These are structural questions with structural answers.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core · all candidates

Ask where their role stops. A tutor who answers with a clear account of what they will not do, and why the consequence falls on the candidate, has read the academic-honesty rules. A tutor who promises to help get it finished has told you something important.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

How you contract matters as much as who you contract with. These three arrangements cover the Dubai market, and they allocate risk differently.

Direct engagement with an independent tutor

You contract with the individual. Rates are often lower because there is no intermediary, and everything else is yours to manage: permit verification, a written agreement, payment records, and finding a replacement if the arrangement ends mid-term. For a family with time and a good recommendation this works well.

  • Lowest intermediary cost and direct relationship with the teacher
  • Permit verification and record-keeping fall to the parent
  • No replacement if the tutor leaves the country mid-term
  • Get the agreement in writing even with a trusted recommendation

Matched one-to-one through a platform

You contract with the platform, which matches a specialist, handles scheduling and replaces a match that is not working. The intermediary is a real cost and buys two real things: a pool wider than your community and someone accountable when the arrangement fails. This is the model IB Gram operates, delivered over live video.

  • Matched on subject and level rather than on travel distance
  • A named contact when a match needs changing
  • Written session records and four-week reviews
  • Free trial lesson before any payment or card details

Tuition centre with premises

A licensed institute operating from a physical location in Dubai, which is a different legal arrangement carrying a KHDA Educational Services Permit rather than an individual's work permit. Group classes are cheaper per hour; one-to-one is usually priced at or above platform rates, and the pupil travels there.

  • Operates under a KHDA permit for premises, not a personal permit
  • Group rates are the cheapest genuine option in the market
  • Travel and fixed timetables are the practical costs
  • Ask which specific teacher will take the sessions, not which centre

01

What an IB private tutor in Dubai is, in law

  • The instrument is Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Free of charge, valid two years, two working days to issue
  • Applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services
  • The permit evidences legality, never subject expertise

A private tutor in the UAE is a person holding a private tuition work permit, issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. The ministry's service page for it, listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, states no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system.

Eligibility is deliberately wide. Teachers registered in government or private schools qualify. So do employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school pupils aged 15 to 18. That last category surprises parents and is explicit in the published eligibility list, which tells you something useful about the intended scope: the resolution regularises an existing informal market rather than restricting tutoring to professionals.

The consequence of operating outside it is stated but not quantified. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, and press reporting on the regime noted explicitly that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties. A figure circulates online; it could not be verified, so it does not appear here, and any provider quoting you one is repeating something unchecked.

What the permit does not do is worth saying plainly. It is not a teaching qualification, not a subject endorsement, and not a statement about Higher Level competence. A permitted tutor may be a Diploma examiner or a first-year undergraduate. Legality and expertise are two separate checks, and a parent who conflates them has done one of the two things that matter.

02

Who may legally tutor privately, category by category

The table below sets out the eligible categories from the published rules, with what a parent can usefully check in each case. It is the only such table in this market, which is remarkable given that one competitor ranks substantially on a single subheading about licensing.

Two conditions cut across the categories. The permit carries a code of conduct, and that code bars serving pupils affiliated with the tutor's own school. Separately, in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to pupils enrolled at their own school. Those rules are press-reported rather than read from the current policy document, so verify them against ADEK directly before relying on the exact wording, but the direction is unambiguous.

For employed tutors there is an additional practical question a parent cannot answer and should still ask. A government or private-sector employee applying for a private tuition permit is operating alongside an existing employment relationship, and whether their employer's internal policy permits it is a matter between them. A tutor who has thought about this will say so; one who looks blank has not.

The verification route is simple and almost nobody uses it. Ask the individual whether they hold a current private tuition work permit, when it expires, and under which category they applied. A tutor operating properly answers without hesitation. The answer is not something a platform can supply on an individual's behalf, which is why the question belongs to the parent even when a platform made the introduction.

Six provider models, and what each one actually charges

Every competitor page in this market compares itself against an unnamed set of other platforms, which tells a parent nothing. A useful comparison compares models, with rates attributed to whoever published them and the date noted. The figures below come from published provider pages and a 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey.

What separates the models is not quality but where the risk sits. With an independent tutor, the family carries verification, record-keeping and replacement risk, and pays less for it. With a platform, the intermediary carries those and charges for them. With a tuition centre, the premises and the timetable carry the cost, and group delivery makes the hourly figure lower while making the attention per pupil lower too.

The rate column is wide in every model for the reason given earlier: subject and level drive price more than business model does. A Higher Level Chemistry specialist costs more than an SL Biology tutor in every one of these models. What the model changes is what happens in the three situations that actually arise, which are a tutor leaving mid-term, a match that is not working, and a dispute about what was agreed.

On our own row, two things are stated rather than implied. IB Gram does not offer in-home visiting anywhere in the UAE, so the in-home column reads no for us and that is a model decision rather than a shortfall. And no own-price figure appears, because a single number across every subject, level and frequency would be misleading. The figure is agreed at the consultation after the free trial lesson.

Five questions to ask before any money moves

A parent can do most of the useful due diligence in a single email, and the questions are specific enough that evasive answers are obvious. None of them is about qualifications in the abstract, because a qualification does not tell you whether someone has taught the level your child sits.

The first is the permit question: do you hold a current private tuition work permit, and when does it expire. The second is the level question, asked as a subject-specific question rather than a general one: what does a candidate lose a mark for in this specific component. The third is the record question: what will I receive after each session, and what will the four-week review measure.

The fourth is the boundary question, and it is the one that separates this market most sharply. Ask what the tutor will do if your child asks them to look over a nearly finished internal assessment the night before submission. The right answer involves declining to supply text and explaining the academic-honesty consequence. Any version of getting it finished is a reason to stop the conversation.

The fifth is the commercial question, itemised: is the rate per sixty minutes or per session, is there a minimum block, is coursework support inside the figure, what are the cancellation terms, and does the quoted amount include value added tax. On tax specifically, the treatment of tuition fees is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority rather than for any tutoring website, so the only safe question is whether the specific figure you have been quoted is inclusive.

What a tutoring enquiry may ask about your child

  • UAE data protection sits under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021
  • Expect a stated purpose, a retention period and a deletion route
  • A tutoring enquiry does not need a photograph of your child
  • Ask what happens to a marked script after the diagnosis
  • A privacy link belongs on the same page as the form

Lead forms in this market routinely collect a child's school, year group, grades and sometimes a photograph, with no stated purpose and no visible privacy information. That is a data protection question, and in the UAE it sits under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on the Protection of Personal Data.

The practical standard a parent should expect is modest and almost nobody meets it: a clear statement of what is collected, why it is needed, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted, with a privacy link on the same page as the form. Information about a minor deserves that at minimum, and a provider who cannot say why they need your child's school name probably does not need it.

Our own position is that the minimum set of facts needed to answer a tutoring enquiry honestly is the subject, the level, the target and one piece of marked work. The school name is useful context for coursework deadlines and option blocks, and it is not required. A photograph is never required. A grade history is useful and should be shared only once a family has decided to proceed.

There is a related question about who sees a child's marked work. A script shared for diagnosis is a document about a minor's academic performance, and it should be used for that diagnosis and not retained beyond it without a reason. Asking a provider what happens to the script after the assessment is a reasonable question and the answer is revealing.

06

The teacher-of-your-own-child problem

  • The permit's code of conduct bars pupils affiliated with the tutor's school
  • ADEK ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi school staff from tutoring their own pupils
  • Internal marking habits are not an external examiner's habits
  • Verify the current wording with the authority or the school directly
  • The cleanest match has no role in the pupil's school

A recurring suggestion in Dubai parent networks is to engage your child's own subject teacher privately, on the reasoning that nobody knows the pupil or the course better. It is the arrangement to avoid, for rule-based reasons and for a practical one that families find more persuasive.

On the rules: the private tuition permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving pupils affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to pupils enrolled at their own school. Those rules are press-reported, so verify the current wording with the authority or the school rather than relying on a summary, including this one.

On the practice: the person who set your child's assessment is not the person best placed to show them how an external examiner reads an answer. Internal marking develops its own habits, generous in some places and severe in others, and a candidate coached by their own marker can become excellent at satisfying that marker specifically. The session that moves a Diploma grade is usually the one that introduces an unfamiliar, external reading of the same script.

There is also a conflict nobody discusses comfortably. A teacher who is paid by a family holds a position in relation to that family's child inside school as well as outside it, and both parties feel the awkwardness the first time an internal grade disappoints. The cleanest arrangement is a specialist who has no role in the pupil's school at all.

07

Why there is no Dubai address to visit, and what that changes

IB Gram has no premises, office or centre in the UAE, and no page on this site will suggest otherwise. Two competitor pages examined for this project show a UAE footer address on a page about a different emirate, and two route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number as the conversion path. Both are trust failures, and an address a business does not occupy is a misrepresentation.

The operating consequence is that teaching for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and that in-home visiting is available only in India. A parent who wants a person in the room should hire locally, and should do so with the verification questions above in hand rather than on a recommendation alone.

What the model buys is the thing that is actually scarce in Dubai. A Higher Level Chemistry specialist, or a tutor who has supervised an Economics commentary portfolio, is rare within any single community and considerably less rare across a national pool. A family in Dubai South chooses from the same specialists as a family in Al Barsha, and neither pays for a drive.

What it costs is the things presence provides, and they are worth naming rather than dismissing. A tutor in the room reads a pupil's body language more fully than a camera does. For younger children, physical presence helps with attention. For a pupil with specific access requirements, in-person support may be the right answer, and a family in that position should hire locally and pay the premium without apology.

Replacement, cancellation and the three things that actually go wrong

Over a two-year Diploma, three failures account for almost every unhappy tutoring arrangement in this market, and none of them is about teaching quality. Knowing them in advance is how a family writes an agreement that survives them.

The first is departure. Dubai's population moves, and a tutor leaving the country in March of DP2 is a genuine and common event. A family contracting directly with an individual has no remedy and starts the search in the worst month of the year. The protection is not a longer contract; it is knowing in advance who, if anyone, is responsible for finding a replacement.

The second is the quiet mismatch. The sessions happen, everyone is pleasant, and nothing moves. This is why a review instrument agreed in advance matters so much: without one, the arrangement continues on goodwill until the mock arrives. With one, the four-week review either shows a changed pattern of lost marks or it does not, and the conversation is about evidence rather than about anyone's feelings.

The third is the boundary failure, and it usually arrives at 10pm the night before a coursework deadline. A candidate under pressure asks for more than feedback, and a tutor who wants to be helpful supplies a paragraph. The consequence falls on the candidate and can extend to the loss of a Diploma. The protection is to have agreed the boundary in writing at the start, so that the answer in the moment is a reference to something already settled rather than a judgement made at 10pm.

Hiring conditions across Dubai

What a family can realistically verify, and what the local market looks like, differs by community. These notes concern the hiring process rather than the teaching.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High turnover of short-term residents means a large informal tutoring market advertised through building groups, where permit status is rarely mentioned and references are hard to follow up. The convenience is real and so is the verification gap.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Estate

Community recommendation networks are strong here and produce good matches often, but a recommendation substitutes for verification rather than supplying it. Ask the referring parent what they checked, not only whether they were happy.

Al Barsha and Tecom

Dense concentration of tuition centres with premises, which is a different legal arrangement from an individual tutor and carries a KHDA institute permit rather than a personal one. Worth knowing which you are contracting with.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established private tutoring market with experienced independent tutors, many of them long-term residents. This is the cluster where asking about permit status is least likely to be met with surprise.

Mirdif and Al Qusais

A large and competitive market at lower price points, including many university-student tutors who are explicitly eligible for the permit. Verification here is about subject level rather than legality.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Short-let residents and frequent household moves make continuity the main risk. A written agreement covering notice and replacement matters more in this cluster than anywhere else in the emirate.

Dubai South and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Few resident tutors within practical reach, so families here are usually choosing between online delivery and a long commute priced into the rate. The verification questions matter equally in both cases.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

A substantial university-student tutoring population, which at primary and middle-years level is good value and entirely lawful with a permit. At Higher Level it is where mismatches between price and expertise occur most often.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Ask the permit question first

Of any individual tutor, from any source, including one a platform introduced: do you hold a current private tuition work permit, under which category, and when does it expire. It is free to obtain and takes two working days, so there is no legitimate reason for the answer to be complicated.

  2. 02

    Ask one subject-specific question

Not what are your qualifications, which anyone can answer, but a question only someone who has taught the level can answer in a sentence. The subject entries above give one for each. A general answer about exam technique is itself the answer.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

A full session with the proposed specialist, at no cost and with no card required. Use it to test the two things that matter: whether they can diagnose from a marked script, and whether they are clear about where their role stops on assessed work.

  4. 04

Get the quote itemised in writing

Session length, minimum block, whether coursework support is inside the figure, written records, cancellation terms, replacement obligation and the tax position. Six lines. A provider unwilling to put them in writing has told you how a dispute would go.

Agree the review instrument and the boundary

Which piece of school-marked work the four-week review will measure, and exactly what will and will not be provided on coursework. Both settled before the first session, so that neither is being decided under pressure later.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The permit framework set out properly

Resolution number, fee, validity, eligibility categories and the verification question a parent should ask. One competitor page in this market mentions licensing at all, in a single subheading, and ranks partly on that. The information is public and useful, so it is here in full.

Models compared, not straw men

Six provider models with published rates attributed to their sources, including the cheapest and including a row for ourselves with no price on it. Every competitor compares itself to an unnamed set of other platforms, which is a comparison with nothing in it.

No accreditation claimed, because none is held

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no premises in the UAE. A KHDA institute permit is a licence for premises and cannot be borrowed by a platform.

The honesty boundary agreed in writing

What will and will not be provided on assessed work, settled before the first session rather than at 10pm before a deadline. The consequence of crossing that line falls on the candidate, which is exactly why it should not be decided under pressure.

A named contact when a match fails

Tutors leave Dubai mid-course and matches sometimes do not work. Someone being responsible for a replacement is a large part of what an intermediary is for, and a family contracting directly with an individual should know that risk is theirs.

Minimal data about a minor

Subject, level, target and one marked script answers a tutoring enquiry honestly. No photograph, no grade history before a family has decided to proceed, and a clear answer about what happens to a script after the diagnosis.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is it legal for a Dubai family to hire a private IB tutor?+

Yes, provided the tutor holds the right permit. Private tuition in the UAE runs on a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Individuals offering private tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. The obligation sits on the tutor rather than the family, but a parent engaging an unpermitted tutor is building a two-year arrangement on an unlawful footing, which is a poor foundation whatever the teaching is like.

How long does a UAE private tuition work permit last and what does it cost?+

It is granted free of charge for two years. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, with no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system. Because it costs nothing and takes two days, a tutor without one has either not looked into it or has decided not to, and both answers are informative. Ask for the expiry date rather than simply whether they hold one.

Who is eligible to apply for the private tutor permit in the UAE?+

The published eligibility list is wide: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school pupils aged 15 to 18. That breadth tells you the resolution was written to regularise an existing informal market rather than to restrict tutoring to professionals. It also means the permit says nothing about expertise. A permitted tutor may be a Diploma examiner or a first-year undergraduate, and establishing which is a separate question entirely.

Can the same permit be used for online lessons as for in-person ones?+

The permit regularises private tuition as an activity rather than a venue, so the sensible assumption is that it covers the work however it is delivered, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation is the authority to confirm that with directly. What a parent can rely on is simpler: ask the individual whether their current permit covers the arrangement you are proposing, and take the answer in writing. Any provider telling you the question does not apply to online teaching is guessing on your behalf about something they could check.

Can a tutoring centre be opened on a private tutor permit in Dubai?+

No. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal and requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained after initial approval, with a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. The personal permit covers an individual providing private tuition. The two are routinely conflated in marketing, and a platform describing itself as holding a KHDA permit when it has no premises is describing something it cannot hold.

Are there fines for using a tutor without a permit, and how much?+

The published position is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published. Press reporting on the regime stated explicitly that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, and a figure circulating online could not be verified. For that reason no amount appears on this page, and any provider quoting you a specific number is repeating something unchecked. The absence of a published figure is not an absence of consequence.

Can a 15-year-old be paid to tutor in the UAE?+

School pupils aged 15 to 18 are explicitly listed among those eligible to apply for the private tuition work permit, which surprises most parents reading the rules for the first time. Whether that is a suitable arrangement for your child is a separate judgement from whether it is lawful. For primary numeracy or middle-years content practice, a capable older pupil can be genuinely effective and inexpensive. For a Higher Level Diploma subject, buying a tutor one or two years ahead of the candidate purchases reassurance rather than marks.

How can I check whether an IB tutor is permitted to teach in the UAE?+

Ask the individual directly: do you hold a current private tuition work permit, under which eligibility category, and what is the expiry date. A tutor operating properly answers in one line. A platform cannot hold the permit on an individual's behalf, so a reply along the lines of all our tutors are fully licensed is not an answer to the question you asked. Ask the same question regardless of how the introduction was made, including through a recommendation from another parent in your community.

Why should I avoid hiring my child's own subject teacher privately?+

Two reasons. The permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving pupils affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of pupils enrolled at their own school. Those rules are press-reported, so verify the current wording with the authority or the school. The practical reason is stronger: the person who set the assessment is not the person best placed to show a candidate how an unfamiliar external examiner reads the same answer.

Who employs the tutor, and who is accountable if the arrangement fails?+

It depends entirely on the model, and this is the question families most often skip. Contracting directly with an independent tutor means there is no third party, which keeps the rate lower and leaves verification, record-keeping and replacement with you. Contracting through a platform means a named contact is responsible for changing a match that is not working. A tuition centre is accountable for the service but will usually offer a different class rather than a different teacher. Establish which arrangement you are in before the first payment.

What should a Dubai tutoring agreement actually say?+

Six things, in writing, before the first session. Whether the rate is per sixty minutes or per session. Whether a minimum block applies. Whether coursework support is inside the figure or billed separately. What the cancellation terms are, including for a prepared session. Who is responsible for finding a replacement if the tutor becomes unavailable. And exactly what will and will not be provided on assessed work. Everything that later becomes a dispute in this market is one of those six left unstated.

What happens if the first private tutor turns out to be the wrong match?+

With a platform arrangement, a named contact changes the match and the four-week review exists precisely to surface the problem early rather than at the mock. Contracting directly, the family starts the search again, which in February or March of the Diploma second year is a genuinely difficult position. Either way the protection is the same: agree in advance which piece of school-marked work the review will measure, so that a mismatch shows up as evidence rather than as a slowly growing suspicion that nobody wants to raise.

What personal information should a tutoring enquiry form ask about a child?+

As little as answers the question. Subject, level, target grade and one piece of marked work is enough to give an honest response. UAE data protection sits under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, and the standard a parent should expect is a clear statement of what is collected, why, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted, with a privacy link on the same page as the form. A tutoring enquiry does not need a photograph of your child, and it is reasonable to ask what happens to a marked script after the diagnosis.

Does a private tutor cost more than a tuition centre in Dubai?+

Per hour, one-to-one is more expensive than a group class in a centre, and that is the clearest genuine saving available in this market. Published one-to-one rates run from AED 45 at the budget online end to AED 650 for a named premium provider, with qualified subject teachers at AED 150 to AED 300 and specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or above. A centre group class undercuts all of those. What it cannot offer is a diagnosis of one candidate's specific fault, which is what a Diploma family is usually paying for.

Why does IB Gram not have a Dubai office or centre to visit?+

Because it has none, and saying otherwise would be a misrepresentation. Two competitor pages examined for this project display a UAE address on a page about a different emirate, and two route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number. IB Gram operates no premises in the UAE, holds no KHDA institute permit, and delivers teaching one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. In-home visiting is a service offered only in India. A family who wants someone physically present should hire locally, using the verification questions on this page.

Two questions, one email, before anything is paid

If you are hiring an IB private tutor in Dubai, two questions do most of the work and cost nothing to ask: whether the individual holds a current private tuition work permit with its expiry date, and one subject-specific question only someone who has taught that level can answer in a sentence. Ask them of anyone, from any source, including us. The trial lesson that follows here is a full diagnostic session over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no card required and nothing to cancel, and it is the right place to test whether the proposed specialist can read a marked script and is clear about where their role stops.
